Introduction: Primary care placement for nursing and medical students is vital for developing the competence to accommodate the increasing number of patients with multimorbid and complex conditions. Prior studies have suggested that interaction quality in primary care placement empowers learning. However, research mapping interaction quality in primary care placements in municipal emergency care units is lacking. This study aimed to systematically map interaction quality for nursing and medical students in primary care placement in two municipal emergency care units. Materials and methods: This study adopted a systematic descriptive observational design. Systematic observations (n = 201 cycles) of eight nursing students (n = 103 cycles) and six medical students (n = 98 cycles) were used to map interaction quality across six learning situations between March and May 2019. Observations were coded using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System-Secondary (CLASS-S). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlations. Results: Interaction quality is described in three domains: (I) emotional support, (II) framework for learning, and (III) instructional support, and the overall measure, student engagement. The results indicated middle-quality interactions in the emotional and instructional support domains and high quality in the framework for learning domain and student engagement. Correlations exhibited similar patterns and ranged from non-significant to strong correlations. Conclusion: The interaction qualities indicated a generally positive and supportive learning environment contributing to nursing and medical students’ learning and active participation in work tasks related to their professional roles. Thus, this new form for primary care placement for nursing and medical students in the municipal emergency care units was found to be a positive learning arena. These results may enhance nursing and medical education programs in countries with simil

The purpose of the study is to contribute to knowledge about physical education teachers' understanding of health and how the view of health can be related to theories about health. The theories used in the study are the salutogenic and pathogenic perspective and KASAM. Four physical education teachers participated in a qualitative interview study. The result showed that the physical education teachers have similar views on health in the current society. However, the view on health has changed since the teachers' upbringing until today. The result showed that students today are more sedentary than before, and spontaneous sports have almost disappeared. The physical education teachers hung out with friends while doing physical activity during their upbringing, and therefore did not consider that physical activity has a positive effect on health. The physical education teachers spoke of a salutogenic perspective on health when describing their upbringing and used a more pathogenic language about their health today and about young people today. The physical education teachers want to teach about and in health to prevent health-related diseases. The results showed that health in physical education is often defined as theoretical, and that the purpose of the physical part of physical education is to improve fitness and reduce the students' sedentary behavior., Syftet med studien är att bidra med kunskap om idrottslärares förståelse av hälsa och hur hälsosynen kan relateras till teorier om hälsa.

- Abstract
In Indonesia the unmet need for family planning in 2017 reached 10.6%, Riau 25.6% (2021) while the national target (5%). The public's low level of knowledge or understanding about family planning and the reluctance of PUS to visit health services are the main problems. In order to simplify the family planning counseling process, in 2022 the government created the "KlikKB" application as a family planning communication medium for people throughout Indonesia, but utilization is not evenly distributed. The aims to increase public knowledge and understanding about family planning through outreach and introduction of the Contraception Counseling Movement using the KlikKB application. The activity was carried out at RT 02/RW 08, West Sidomulyo, Pekanbaru. The counseling method is health education, questions and answers and filling out questionnaires about family planning knowledge. Participants are given pre and post tests while practicing the KlikKB application through observation with a checklist sheet. The number of participants was 35 people. The average pre-test value for family planning knowledge is 45%. The post test score increased with an average of 72.3%. The majority of the KlikKB application practice assessments were in the "unable to" category (46.2%), the "with help" category (38%) and the "proficient" category was only 15.8%. Providing education about family planning can increase mothers' knowledge. Meanwhile, to socialize the contraceptive counseling movement with the KlikKB Application, continuous assistance and collaboration with the local community health center is needed, Di Indonesia angka unmet need KB pada tahun 2017 mencapai 10,6%, Riau 25,6% (2021) sedangkan target nasional adalah 5%.

- Abstract
Introduction. The urinary incontinence is a symptom resulting from a dysfunction in the elimination pattern, defined as the involuntary loss of urine. In Spain its prevalence is estimated at 16%, affecting mostly women. The main objective is to investigate how urinary incontinence is addressed in Primary Care Nursing consultations within the Araba Health Service. Secondary objectives include determining the level of assessment in the elimination domain, analyzing prevention and early intervention practices for urinary incontinence, examining the compliance with record-keeping in the elimination domain, assessing the level of training among primary care nursing professionals, and identifying the challenges faced in addressing this issue. Methodology. To address these objectives, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in urban healthcare centers within the Araba Health Service. Results. The analysis involved 4,728 individuals, with 13% of them presenting urinary incontinence, of which 73% were women. Complete assessments of the elimination domain were conducted in only 17% of the cases, appropriate interventions were observed in just 4.7% of cases, and adequate record-keeping was found in 15% of the total. Discussion. The study revealed that urinary incontinence is the most common urinary symptom in the studied population; however, the assessment, intervention, and record-keeping related to the elimination domain are limited, with a gender gap disadvantaging women. More than half of the nursing professionals perceive their training in this area as "scarce," and one-third find it challenging to address urinary incontinence. The lack of training and time constraints during consultations were identified as the primary difficulties encountered in addressing this issue., Introducción.

- Abstract
Background: Ethnic minority students pursuing advanced practice nursing degrees often face unique challenges that hinder their academic success and persistence, such as limited mentorship opportunities that address their cultural considerations. A lack of culturally informed mentorship (CIM) may contribute to feelings of isolation, lower self-efficacy, and reduced retention rates among ethnic minority advanced practice registered nursing (APRN) students. Through cultural competency, CIM programs are emerging as a promising approach to address these challenges and support the needs of historically underrepresented ethnic minority (HUEM) students. The underrepresentation of HUEM APRN students in graduate nursing education and advanced nursing practice is a persistent issue that must be addressed using targeted, evidence-based interventions. This project sought to elucidate this gap by implementing a semi-structured mentorship program tailored to support and empower HUEM APRN students. Objectives: This project demonstrated the implementation of a ten-week culturally informed mentorship program to improve the satisfaction and academic resiliency of HUEM APRN students. A semi-structured mentorship program was based on a culturally informed framework, using evidence from current literature, considering the unique needs, challenges, and experiences of HUEM APRN students. The CIM program’s principal objective was to provide student mentees with mentorship, guidance, support, and advice for academic resources tailored to their unique cultural backgrounds and needs to enhance mentee students’ satisfaction with their educational experience and bolster academic resiliency. Methods: This study utilized a single-group pre-test, post-test, and quasi-experimental project design. A convenience sample of six first-year APRN students, self-identifying as ethnic minorities, was recruited as study participants and paired with individual mentors of their choice. Mentees and mentors compl

- Abstract
Background: Weight stigma is pervasive in healthcare, and it discourages patients from seeking medical care, exacerbating health conditions among patients with obesity. Primary care physicians (PCPs) assess, discuss, and refer patients with obesity to weight management programs (WMP) when these are discussed during office visits. The challenge is initiating the discussion on weight interventions without patients feeling stigmatized. As the first point of contact in screening patients, this project utilizes the primary care staff (PCS: nurses and medical assistants) to provide opportunities for patients to discuss WMPs with their PCPs. Objectives: This quasi-experimental project aimed to educate PCSs about obesity stigma, mitigate it, and integrate weight assessments and WMP referrals during office visits with the patients’ PCPs. Implementation: The project compared two primary care clinics within a health maintenance organization (HMO). In the intervention clinic, 40 PCS received a 50-minute Obesity Sensitivity Training (OST) and pre-and 12 weeks post-Fat Attitude Assessment Toolkit (FAAT) with subscales on empathy, critical health, and complexity. The comparison clinic did not receive OST or FAAT. Data on WMP referrals were collected from both intervention and comparison clinics. Analysis: A one-sided paired t-test was used to analyze the means of pre- and post-intervention FAAT scores. For the second outcome, patient referrals from physicians from both clinics were collected, and ratios and chi-square analysis were calculated. Outcomes: The PCS in the intervention clinic had statistical significance in the empathy and critical health subscales (p-value .038 and .046, respectively) but not in the general complexity subscale (p-value =0.15). Referral to PCP ratio from the intervention clinic was 17.85 versus the comparison clinic 10.2; the chi-square statistic is 3.9467 with a p-value of 0.046964, significant at p<0.05. Conclusion: Primary care clinic visits are

- Abstract
OBJECTIVES: Long-term benzodiazepine use is common despite known risks. In the original Eliminating Medications Through Patient Ownership of End Results (EMPOWER) Study set in Canada, patient education led to increased rates of benzodiazepine cessation. We aimed to determine the effectiveness of implementing an adapted EMPOWER quality improvement (QI) initiative in a US-based healthcare system. DESIGN: We used a pre-post design with a non-randomised control group. SETTING: A network of primary care clinics. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with ≥60 days supply of benzodiazepines in 6 months and ≥1 risk factor (≥65 years of age, a concurrent high-risk medication prescribed or a diazepam equivalent daily dose ≥10) were eligible. INTERVENTION: In March 2022, we engaged 22 primary care physicians (PCPs), and 308 of their patients were mailed an educational brochure, physician letter and flyer detailing benzodiazepine risks; the control group included 4 PCPs and 291 of their patients. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY MEASURES: The primary measure was benzodiazepine cessation by 9 months. We used logistic regression and a generalised estimating equations approach to control for clustering by PCP, adjusting for demographics, frailty, number of risk factors, and diagnoses of arthritis, depression, diabetes, falls, and pain. RESULTS: Patients in the intervention and control groups were comparable across most covariates; however, a greater proportion of intervention patients had pain-related diagnoses and depression. By 9 months, 26% of intervention patients (81 of 308) had discontinued benzodiazepines, compared with 17% (49 of 291) of control patients. Intervention patients had 1.73 greater odds of benzodiazepine discontinuation compared with controls (95% CI: 1.09, 2.75, p=0.02). The unadjusted number needed to treat was 10.5 (95% CI: 6.30, 34.92) and the absolute risk reduction was 0.095 (95% CI: 0.03 to 0.16). CONCLUSIONS: Results from this non-randomised QI initiative indicate that patient e

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Reducing malnutrition is a key priority for governments in low- and middle-income countries given its lasting effects on child development, health, income, and economic growth. Strategies to improve recommended infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, especially during the first two years of life, are considered among the most effective. METHODS: In this paper, we evaluate the long-run impacts of an innovative education strategy based on interactive play and performing arts implemented in El Alto, Bolivia on caregivers IYCF knowledge and practices. Two thousand and fifteen households were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Two rounds of data were collected approximately 30 and 42 months after baseline. We estimate short-term (30 month) and longer-term (42 month) intent-to-treat effects using multivariate linear regression analysis, with and without controlling for covariates. RESULTS: The program significantly increased caregiver IYCF knowledge by 0.13 SDs in the short run, and this effect grew over time. The program also improved adherence to recommended IYCF practices by 0.23 standard deviations (SDs) in the short term, but the effect on practices dissipated over time, and no longer-term impacts were detected. Caregivers with above median baseline knowledge, number of children, and age appear to have benefited most from the program. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that entertainment-education interventions are a promising model for improving and maintaining IYCF knowledge. However, their ability to sustain more permanent changes in IYCF practices is less certain. Further evidence is needed to identify other avenues for producing long-term, sustainable behavior change, especially among indigenous populations in Latin America, where literature on education and behavior-change interventions related to IYCF practices is limited.

- Abstract
Background: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) represent a significant global health burden, affecting millions of individuals annually and leading to substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs worldwide. These injuries, caused by sudden trauma to the brain, are associated with disparities in prevalence based on factors such as gender, race/ethnicity, military service, intimate partner violence, and poverty. Despite their increasing prevalence and devastating consequences, including long-term physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments, research progress and funding for TBIs have been limited, prompting calls to address this "silent epidemic" through concerted efforts in prevention, clinical care, and research. Despite the growing research on TBIs, notable gaps within the literature include the lack of studies on adults aged 18–64, gender disparities in clinical trial recruitment and outcomes, limited literature on the mechanisms of injury and TBI severity levels, and insufficient focus on moderate TBIs, which are often combined with mild or severe categories despite their significant consequences. These gaps demonstrate the need for more comprehensive and targeted research in these areas. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis uses data from the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) and includes data from 747 trauma designated hospitals nationwide. For the first aim, we used multinomial logistic regression to examine associations between mechanism of injury (MOI) and TBI severity. In the second aim, we focused on individuals with moderate TBI, using multinomial logistic regression to understand associations between MOI and discharge disposition and survival modeling to understand associations between MOI and hospital length of stay. To determine the influence of each independent variable more precisely, both studies accounted for relevant sociodemographic factors and health-related covariates. Results: Aim 1 analysis finds that transportation-related TBIs are

- Abstract
As the global population ages rapidly, there's a growing need for tailored digital solutions to ensure that this population receives the healthcare, social connections, and daily assistance it deserves. Menopause is an unspoken chapter of a woman's life, inadequately addressed by researchers. Despite a growing population of women working past the age of menopause, research on support tools available remains inadequate. This gap calls for evaluation and redesigning of the digital support tools available to empower women to navigate through this phase of life with ease. This study investigates the design and impact of digital women's wellness programs, with a particular focus on programs targeting menopausal women. Using a snowball technique, a 26-question survey was distributed across the University of California, Davis staff and students. The survey findings identified lower awareness of menopause-specific wellness programs compared to general wellness programs. Stigma and time constraints emerged as significant barriers, particularly for working women, while digital literacy posed no obstacle. Despite limited engagement with wellness program designers, this research provides valuable insights into user preferences and the current program landscape. The findings highlight the need for increased awareness and accessibility of menopause-specific digital wellness programs. The current program landscape revealed that interactive online content, telehealth consultations, and non-interactive online content were the most popular delivery methods used. While awareness of digital wellness programs is growing, participants expressed a desire for programs that combine interactive online content with in-person interactions with support group members. A comprehensive approach to content was emphasized, including general wellness education, menopause-specific information, symptom management tools, and information on alternative therapies. The preference for collaboration with hea

- Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the content and usability of a new direct observation tool for assessing competency in delivering person-centred care based on the Gothenburg Centre for Person-Centred Care (gPCC) framework. Design: This is a qualitative study using think-aloud techniques and retrospective probing interviews and analyzed using deductive content analysis. Setting: Sessions were conducted remotely via Zoom with participants in their homes or offices. Participants: 11 participants with lengthy experience of receiving, delivering and/or implementing gPCC were recruited using purposeful sampling and selected to represent a broad variety of stakeholders and potential end-users. Results: Participants generally considered the content of the four main domains of the tool, that is, person-centred care activities, clinician manner, clinician skills and person-centred care goals, to be comprehensive and relevant for assessing person-centred care in general and gPCC in particular. Some participants pointed to the need to expand person-centred care activities to better reflect the emphasis on eliciting patient resources/capabilities and psychosocial needs in the gPCC framework. Think-aloud analyses revealed some usability issues primarily regarding difficulties or uncertainties in understanding several words and in using the rating scale. Probing interviews indicated that these problems could be mitigated by improving written instructions regarding response options and by replacing some words. Participants generally were satisfied with the layout and structure of the tool, but some suggested enlarging font size and text spacing to improve readability. Conclusion: The tool appears to satisfactorily cover major person-centred care activities outlined in the gPCC framework. The inclusion of content concerning clinician manner and skills was seen as a relevant embellishment of the framework and as contributing to a more comprehensive assessment of clinician performance in the d

- Abstract
‘Mooditj' known as ‘good' or ‘solid knowledge’ in Noongar language based in Western Australian, is an impact evaluated sexuality education program developed in 2002 by Sexual Health Quarters after an extensive consultation process with WA First Nations populations. The program uses interactive activities designed to educate 11–14–year–old First Nations youth about sexual health, life and relationship skills. In conjunction with local and Indigenous leaders within hilltribe communities, Borderless Friendship Foundation (BFF) and Borderless Friendship WA (BFWA) adapted the Mooditj training program to a hilltribe youth audience. Hilltribe people are the Indigenous culture of Thailand, typically living in remote villages that often have little to no electricity, access to safe water, health services or education. Hilltribe youth are at risk of entering the sex trade due to multiple vulnerabilities as a population and education is recommended to reduce risky sexual behaviours. This paper explores the acceptability of Mooditj program content and delivery to suit the cultural contexts and need of hilltribe communities.

- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to identify the dominant discourses of health and wellbeing that are offered in health education in Swedish schools. Issues of health and wellbeing are covered mainly in four school subjects in Sweden: physical education and health, home and consumer studies, biology, and social studies, and therefore, we interviewed teachers from those subjects to generate data. Six interrelated health discourses were identified from the data. All discourses were, however, also embedded within a health discourse with a comprehensive description of health as physical, psychological and social wellbeing. Results suggest that schools offer a Western and White discourse of health and that some content is overemphasised, and some is missing in relation to other non-dominant discourses of health and wellbeing.

- Abstract
Background: Sleep problems are common among infants and can have a serious impact on the health and wellbeing of both child and parents. To sustainably promote infant sleep on a population level, it is necessary to develop evidence-based programs that can be implemented on a large scale. The Youth Health Care setting, with its focus on prevention, child health promotion and services widely available for parents, can be a suitable setting to do so. Currently however, sleep health promotion in this setting seems to be suboptimal. To promote healthy infant sleep on a population level, programs need to be accessible and comprehensible for all parents, including parents with limited (health) literacy. Therefore, this study aims to develop, implement and evaluate a program called ‘Sleep on number 1’, that is tailored to Dutch Youth Health Care, to sustainably promote healthy sleep in 0-2-year-old infants. Methods: The program was developed based on co-creation with parents and Youth Health Care professionals, evidence-based behaviour change theories and sleep health promotion methods. Program effectiveness is investigated with a quasi-experimental study design comparing the program group with the care as usual control group. Participants consist of parents of 0-2-year-old children. Primary outcome is infant sleep quality at the age of 10 weeks and 6, 9, 14 and 24 months, measured with a sleep diary. The primary data analysis focuses on night awakenings at 9 months. Secondary outcomes focus on parental behaviour regarding infant sleep, related behavioural determinants and parental satisfaction with Youth Health Care sleep advice. Program effectiveness is analysed using a linear mixed-model in case of data clustering, and an independent samples T-test or linear regression in case no substantial clustering effects are found. A mixed methods process evaluation is performed with parents and Youth Health Care professionals, assessing program reach, adoption, implementation, mai

- Abstract
Purpose: The paper aims to explore how values and knowledge are expressed in student’s discussions about food and health. Design/methodology/approach: Food practices present a complex phenomenon extending beyond biomedical descriptions, including social dynamics of food in families and communities. Contextual conditions of social groups and settings have significant impacts on food choices and practices. Although values constitute a central part of educational goals, deliberate values education remains an often-neglected area, with a tendency in both curricula and educational practice to focus on knowledge and overlook how values intersect with knowledge. The paper utilises group interviews supported by participant observations to study the food and health practices as expressed in students' discussions. Findings: The paper’s findings show how values are expressed together with knowledge as value-knowledges around food and health within the social contexts of family, cultural identities and peer relationships. While moving through their lives, students draw on and utilise biomedical, social-cultural and sensory value-knowledges, simultaneously considering the nutrition and taste of foods, the value of connecting with family and peers in cultural settings as well as getting enough food to feel satiated. Originality/value: The paper presents an original approach around the necessity to consider and integrate cultural identities in discussions and education about food and health to empower students and their communities in a way that is socially just and equitable. This involves shifting discussions of health education away from students as (ir)rational obstacles but rather as partners in co-creating knowledge for sustainable food and health equity. © 2024, Emma Oljans, Tecklah Usai, Doroth Chinofunga and Martin Mickelsson.

- Abstract
BVC-sju, Background Children who are overweight are at greater risk of developing obesity in adulthood. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obesity as "abnormal or excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses a risk to health". The district nurse is responsible for both health promotion and disease prevention measures within primary care and child health care, the goal is to promote good health and thus increase the child's quality of life. Aim The aim was to shed light on child health care nurses' experiences of health talks with parents of overweight children. Methods A qualitative literature review with a systematic approach was used, based on 14 scientific articles. Original scientific articles were retrieved from the Cinahl Complete, Pubmed and PsycINFO databases. Data were analyzed in accordance with Thomas & Harden's (2008) thematic synthesis, which is based on articles using a qualitative analysis method. Results The analysis of the material resulted in three theme areas and eight subthemes. Theme areas that are presented are: the BVC nurse's challenges during health consultations, the BVC nurse's view of her professional role and Lack of resources during health consultations. The sub-themes that are presented are: Overweight and obesity, a sensitive topic to talk about, Lack of knowledge on the part of the BVC nurse, Lack of knowledge on the part of parents, Responsibility when detecting overweight children, Lack of resources for health talks, Lack of time, Lack of continuity and Lack of knowledge. Conclusions The health care nurse's work was limited, among other things, due to lack of time, training and continuity. In order for the health care nurse to carry out a caring conversation, the health care nurse needs to respond to the parents in an individualized way and strengthen empowerment for lifestyle changes in the families. Therefore, health care nurses need continuous training and more allocated time, in order to achieve a positive conversati

- Abstract
The period can be challenging and brings associated physical and psychosocial changes that mark the end of the reproductive life. When meeting climacteric women, the nurse has an important teaching function characterized by person-centered approach. Health literacy can affect women's ability to receive health education, but also the conditions for healthcare personnel to pass on the knowledge. There is a need to look more closely about the role of health education in climacteric women. Aim The aim was to shed light on the health care system's health education for women during climacteric. Method A non-systematic literature review was conducted based on 14 articles. Articles include qualitative, quantitative, and mixed approaches. Searches were conducted in databases PubMed and CINAHL. Integrated data analysis was used as an analysis model when compiling results. Results Through the data analysis, three major categories were identified: The women's prior knowledge, Facilitating factors for health education and Inhibiting factors for health education. The main findings showed that women had difficulty recognizing menopausal symptoms and had a low perception of menopausal health consequences. The lack of information and education among women and healthcare providers, as well as low health literacy, hindered health education. Poor prior knowledge affected quality of life and led to negative beliefs during menopause. The results from the literature review were discussed based on Meleis' transition theory with a focus on both women's and healthcare providers' perspectives. Conclusions There is a need for increased education and dissemination of information about the symptoms and health consequences of climacteric to improve health promotion. Nurses can play an important role in this by identifying knowledge gaps, providing women with the necessar

- Abstract
The mental health of pupils is a challenge in everyday school life, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a sharp increase in acute admissions of children and young people. It is therefore important to promote mental health preventively. Based on this problem, Prof Katrin Sevecke and her team have launched a training course on mental health for schoolchildren. GetFit4MentalHealth is a large project that aims to anchor preventative measures in everyday teaching. On the one hand, knowledge about the clinical pictures and on the other hand, methods for prevention are imparted to the teachers. The aim of this master's thesis is to analyse the experiences, motivation and perceptions of competence of teachers in relation to the promotion of mental health in children and young people before they start this particular training course. In addition, the strategies that they already use in the classroom for prevention are to be presented. The guided interview is the method chosen to collect the data. In combination with participant observation, the aims of the master's thesis are to be achieved. The data collected was processed and analysed using a qualitative content analysis. The results show that the teachers assess their own competence both positively and negatively. The negative assessment is primarily characterised by the challenges associated with the implementation of mental health prevention in everyday school life. It is hoped that the further training will enable these challenges to be dealt with more effectively. An ongoing survey will provide results on this change. Furthermore, the results show that teachers are already using methods to reduce stress and promote resilience in the classroom. They also work with the helper system that is offered at the schools. However, they would need additional training and a more intensive exchange with experts to implement them. Whether a change could be achieved through further training in this area will also becom, Schlux Laura Magdalena, BEd, in englischer Sprache, Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 2024

35. Beyond the plate : Food and health, aesthetics and meaning-making in Home and consumer studies

- Abstract
The overall aim of this thesis is to cultivate understandings of how meanings regarding food and health are made within the school subject home and consumer studies (HCS). The thesis builds on empirical data generated through a comprehensive case study, where 12 students from one school class and their two teachers were followed in HCS over the course of a school year. The methods used were observations, interviews, focus groups, and document collection. This work comprises four papers, where Paper I covers students’ meaning-making during cooking with a focus on aesthetic judgments. The results of Paper I illustrate different ways in which the students used aesthetic judgments, and how aesthetics became integral to meaning-making. Paper II investigates food for health as educational content, using qualification, socialization, and subjectification as an analytical framework. The results exemplify how these three educational functions can be operationalized empirically, and how a given educational content opens up for meaning-making that goes beyond learning facts and skills. In Paper III, thematic analysis is used to gain an overview of which aesthetic values were constituted in the studied practices, and how. Thus, the central roles of aesthetics in HCS food education were further illustrated. Lastly, Paper IV investigates use of the plate model as a food educational tool, using three planes of analysis as a framework. The results demonstrate how the plate model can be useful in food and health education, but also that it needs to be used with caution, for example to avoid conveying a rigid message of “right” and “wrong” dishes. Taken together, the results of the four papers show how food was a central transactant in the studied practices, i.e., how the food itself became an important co-actor in the meaning-making processes. Second, the discrepancy between the students’ focus on immediate food experiences and the teachers’ instrumental orientation is highlighted.

- Abstract
Structural and contextual factors such as limited work and housing opportunities negatively affect the health and well-being of newly settled refugee migrants in receiving high-income countries. Health promotion initiatives aiming at strengthening health and integration have been tried out within the Swedish Introduction program for refugee migrants. However, longitudinal evaluations of these interventions are rare. The aim of the current study was to compare the effectiveness of a regular and an extended civic orientation course with added health communication and examine whether the latter would improve self-rated health and psychological well-being, health literacy and social capital among newly settled refugee migrants in Sweden. Pre- and post-assessment questionnaires were collected from the intervention group receiving the extended course (n = 143) and a control group receiving the regular course (n = 173). Linear mixed models and chi-square analyses showed a significant increase with a small effect size (0.21) in health literacy in the intervention group. However, there were no significant changes in emotional and practical support, general self-rated health or psychological well-being. The findings indicate that added health communication provided embedded in the civic orientation course can increase health literacy. However, further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the sustainability of the observed effect and examine whether these short-term improvements in health literacy translate to long-term advances in health and integration.

- Abstract
The present study assessed older adults (≥ 45 years old) diabetes health literacy, diabetes numeracy, cognitive function, and its association with their Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) self-management outcomes. These factors are of concern as diabetes is a lifelong condition affecting the body’s conversion of food into energy and may lead to complications and comorbidities if this condition is not properly self-managed. Diabetes health literacy refers to having the necessary capabilities in finding and analyzing diabetes-related information to make informed decisions regarding their health. Numeracy in diabetes has to do with being able to compute diabetes-related math such as insulin and nutritional calculations. Diabetes self-management outcomes include insulin pump or continuous glucose monitor (CGM) use, medication adherence, physical activity, diet, and cooperation with one’s healthcare team. In this study, 88 participants completed an online questionnaire measuring their diabetes health literacy, diabetes numeracy, and cognitive function levels with the expectation there were positive correlations to T2DM self-management outcomes. The results confirmed the first and third hypotheses, there were statistically significant positive correlations between diabetes health literacy, cognitive function, and T2DM self-management outcomes respectively. The second hypothesis of diabetes numeracy being positively associated with T2DM self-management outcomes was not supported; however, the relationship was marginally significant at p = 0.055. For hypotheses 4 and 5, the overall models were found to be significant, however when the interaction is added the models do not significantly improve. The results of the present study exhibit diabetes health literacy, numeracy, and cognitive function are positively associated with T2DM self-management outcomes demonstrating the importance of these factors; this aligns with existing literature purporting 95% of diabetes care is throug

- Abstract
Lärare kan alltså utifrån samma kursplan planera, genomföra och reflektera olika i fråga om undervisning när hälsa berörs i ämnet idrott och hälsa., Health education and its place in physical education have been scrutinized since it was given a clearer place in the Swedish curriculum. Students in Swedish schools need to be given opportunities to discuss different aspects of health, reflect on how those aspects influence each other and learn how to take responsibility for their own health and lifestyle from a holistic health perspective. This should be done with both theoretical and practical elements. The purpose of this study is to understand how teachers in physical education teach about health in relation to their interpretation of the curriculum. This is done through semi-structured interviews with six different teachers. The focus of this study is on the teacher´s interpretations of the curriculum, what health perspective or aspects of health are given more space in their teaching, and how they create their health education. The method provides good conditions for a deeper understanding, where the collected data consists of the informants’ words, even though it is interpreted by the researcher. All of the informants have shown awareness of the importance of health education and that different aspects of health are given space in their teaching. The extent and conditions for addressing different parts based on, for example, students’ maturity, vary among the informants. The content and methods also differ among the informants. The teaching is not only adapted to the content of the curriculum but also to individuals and classes based on collegial conversations and their own reflections. Teachers can therefore, based on the same curriculum, plan, implement, and reflect differently regarding teaching when health is addressed in the subject Physical Education.

- Abstract
This article aims to report the experience of medical students to promote an educational moment for father figures about their participation in the vaccination of their children. This is an experience report, which exposes the perception of medical students when planning and executing an educational-extensionist event. This event was based on the distribution of pamphlets and presentation of banners, which contained information about the need for paternal participation in childhood immunization, as well as about the reappearance of eradicated diseases. After the educational activities, it was noticed that the action was successful, that the target audience accepted and was involved in this health communication proposal and that the information was passed efficiently.

- Abstract
Sex education can be described as an important part of health education in school and one way of strengthening health education could be a collaboration between different professionals in the school team. The aim of this study was to describe teachers' and school nurses' experiences and perspectives with regard to sex education among students aged 11-12 years and to explore potential influencing factors. We employed a qualitative design, and the teachers and school nurses were interviewed individually. A thematic analysis was conducted on the interviews and the results showed that the classroom was considered to be the teacher's arena. Tradition and attitudes between professionals could be obstacles that affect collaboration between teachers and nurses and the study showed that there remains much to be done before collaboration at the same level between the groups can be established.
