Via x-ray linear dichroism spectroscopy, we demonstrate that crystal symmetry imposes distinctive 2DEG orbital hierarchies on (001)-and (110)-oriented quantum wells, allowing selective occupancy of states of different symmetry. Pfattner for collaboration in some transport measurements., Interfaces between (110) and (111)SrTiO_3 (STO) single crystalline substrates and amorphous oxide layers, LaAlO_3 (a-LAO), Y:ZrO_2 (a-YSZ), and SrTiO_3 (a-STO) become conducting above a critical thickness tc. Here we show that t_c for a-LAO is not depending on the substrate orientation, i.e. t_c (a-LAO/(110)STO) ≈ t_c(a-LAO/(111)STO) interfaces, whereas it strongly depends on the composition of the amorphous oxide: t_c(a-LAO/(110)STO) < t_c(a-YSZ/(110)STO) < t_c(a-STO/(110)STO). It is concluded that the formation of oxygen vacancies in amorphous-type interfaces is mainly determined by the oxygen affinity of the deposited metal ions, rather than orientational-dependent enthalpy vacancy formation and diffusion. Scanning transmission microscopy characterization of amorphous and crystalline LAO/STO(110) interfaces shows much higher amount of oxygen vacancies in the former, providing experimental evidence of the distinct mechanism of conduction in these interfaces., Unión Europea. Such properties can be tuned or enhanced by incorporating functional materials in the crystals, including magnetic, ferroelectric or piezoelectric compounds, which add versatility to the control of light at the nanoscale. To probe the interplay between the optical properties and external magnetic and electric fields, we used grating couplers as the basic device structure for this analysis, with emphasis on the combined effects of diffraction and plasmonic resonances in the enhancement of magneto-optic responses. We started our work with magnetoplasmonic crystals grown on commercial digital disks (DVD, CD, Blu-ray), showing the potential of these platforms for the development of magnetoplasmonic devices. We generalized the results found in these systems to magnetoplasmonic crystals with engineered optical responses, where the interplay between diffraction, plasmonics and magnetism paves the way to a versatile way to engineer the properties of photonic crystals that goes beyond the particular case of grating couplers. In particular, we have explored how, under some circumstances, light at off-normal incidence can excite unidirectional plasmonic propagating modes with particularly large magneto-optic responses. Finally, we close the Thesis with the study of ferroelectric magnetoplasmonic crystals, where the interplay between magnetization and ferroelectric polarization enables a way to modulate electrically the optical properties of grating couplers. Bibliografia., En aquesta tesi s'han investigat les propietats físiques de diferents sistemes basats en òxids funcionals de metalls de transició. Aquests materials presenten una gran varietat de propietats -magnetisme, ferroelectricitat, superconductivitat- que els fan interessants per a ser explotats com a nous dispositius més enllà de les tecnologies electròniques i fotòniques d'avui dia. La força motriu del nostre estudi ha estat la comprensió dels processos físics fonamentals que expliquen una sèrie de fenòmens observats. En alguns casos, el nostre interès ha estat entendre perquè un determinat material mostra una gran activitat magneto-òptica (MO) atípica, i en altres casos, entendre com es mouen els dominis ferroelástics sota camps elèctrics. Finalment, hem concentrat la nostra atenció en les ones acústiques superficials (SAW) i la seva interacció amb els materials magnètics. Tot i la diversitat de materials i propietats estudiades, hi ha un tret en comú: la metodologia més important per investigar aquests sistemes ha estat l'ús de la llum i, més específicament, l'explotació de l'espectroscòpia MO i la microscopía òptica. Alhora, els esforços s'han dirigit a la construcció, sempre que ha estat possible, dels models teòrics adequats que descriuen les dades experimentals. A continuació, enumerem breument dels resultats més rellevants de la investigació descrita en aquesta tesi: (i) La contribució intrínseca de polarons en manganites a l'activitat MO. En resum, el nostre estudi revela una resposta magneto-òptica gegant i inesperada de polarons auto-atrapats en el visible, que és gairebé dos ordres de magnitud major que la resposta de fons del material i comparable a millores de tipus plasmònic o fotòniques a l'activitat MO. A més, proporcionant un marc teòric, hem identificat les transicions electròniques fotoinduïdes responsables de l'activitat MO intrínseca dels polarons. Aquesta troballa obre noves perspectives per explorar altres vies per obtenir grans efectes magnetoelèctr, In this Thesis we have investigated the physical properties of different systems based on functional transition metal oxides. These materials show a large variety of properties -magnetism, ferroelectricity, superconductivity- that makes them interesting to explore novel devices beyond today's electronic and photonic technologies. The driving force of our study has been the understanding of the fundamental physical processes that explain a series of observed phenomena. In some cases, our interest has been to understand why a particular material shows an atypically large magneto-optical activity; in other cases, why and how ferroelastic domains move under electric fields; finally, we have turned our attention to surface acoustic waves and their interaction with magnetic materials. In spite of the disparity of materials and properties there is a common thread: our most important methodology to research these systems has been the use of light and, more specifically, the exploitation of magneto-optical spectroscopy and optical imaging. At the same time, efforts have been aimed at building, wherever possible, appropriate theoretical models that describe the experimental data. In the following, a concise and brief account is given of the most relevant outcomes of the research described in this Thesis: (i) We have determined the intrinsic contribution to the magneto-optical activity of polarons in manganites. Our study has revealed a large magneto-optical response in the visible, almost two orders of magnitude larger than the background response of the material and comparable to photonic- or plasmonic-mediated magneto-optical enhancement. Additionally, we have identified the photoinduced electronic transitions responsible for the intrinsic magneto-optical activity of self-trapped polarons. La tesis aborda la integración monolítica de óxidos funcionales sobre silicio y la exploración de intercaras entre SrTiO3(110), SrTiO3(111) y otros óxidos En primer lugar la tesis detalla la integración monolítica del BaTiO3 en silicio, la plataforma actual en microelectrónica. Para ello se ha usado la heteroestructura LaNiO3/CeO2/YSZ como capa de barrera química y acomodación estructural. Se han investigado las propiedades estructurales y funcionales. Las capas son epitaxiales y orientadas con el eje c perpendicular al substrato, y presentan rugosidad superficial muy baja y alta polarización ferroeléctrica en remanencia. El óxido ferrimagnético CoFe2O4 fue integrado seguidamente en la estructura. La estructura multifuncional obtenida presenta alta calidad estructural, con excelentes propiedades ferromagnéticas y ferroeléctricas a temperatura ambiente. Asimismo presentamos la integración de BaTiO3 epitaxial sobre Si usando SrTiO3 como capa de barrera. También en este caso los ciclos de polarización ferroeléctrica medidos señalan las buenas propiedades funcionales de la estructura. Se presenta una comparación de las propiedades estructurales y funcionales de BaTiO3 crecido sobre SrTiO3/Si(001) y sobre CeO2/YSZ/Si(001). La segunda parte de la tesis se centra en las propiedades estructurales y de transporte de intercaras de LaAlO3/SrTiO3, con un especial énfasis en el estudio de la formación de un gas bidimensional de electrones en la intercara LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110). El análisis de la estructura y química de la intercara, de su jerarquía orbital electrónica, y de sus propiedades superconductoras amplían el conocimiento existente de los gases bidimensionales de electrones en intercaras de óxidos. Se han estudiado también las intercaras conductoras entre SrTiO3(110) y óxidos amorfos. El estudio ha permitido determinar la importancia relativa de la afinidad con el oxígeno de los metales depositados y la dependencia con la orientación de la energía de formación y difusión de, In this thesis the focus was aimed to the monolithic integration of functional oxides on silicon and to the exploration of interfaces between different oxides and the SrTiO3(110) and SrTiO3 (111) surfaces. Herein we report the monolithic integration of ferroelectric BaTiO3 on silicon, the current platform for microelectronics. This was done using the LNO/CeO2/YSZ buffer layer. The structural and functional properties are investigated. The films are epitaxial an c-oriented. Very low surface roughness and high ferroelectric remanent polarization are reported. High crystal quality ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4 was subsequently integrated in the structure. Thus obtained multifunctional structure shows high structural quality, robust ferromagnetism and superior ferroelectric properties, all at room temperature. Moreover, we report the integration of epitaxial BaTiO3 on Si using SrTiO3 buffer layer. Also in this case the recorded ferroelectric loops point to the good functional properties of this structure. A structural and functional comparison is given between BTO grown on the thin SrTiO3 and CeO2/YSZ buffer layers on silicon. We also report on the structural and transport properties of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, with special emphasis on the LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface featuring two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Further analysis of the interface structure and chemistry, electronic orbital hierarchy and superconductivity enriched our knowledge of the 2DEG electronic properties. Special focus also was given to the conductive interfaces comprising SrTiO3(110) and amorphous oxides. This study enables us to disentangle the relative importance of the oxygen affinity of the deposited metals and the orientation-dependent energy of vacancy formation and diffusion on the creation of oxygen vacancies. In addition we report the layer by layer growth of Y:ZrO2 on SrTiO3(110), leading to the epitaxial relationship [110]YSZ(001) //[001]SrTiO3(110). This novel idea of an interface featuring

Further analysis of the interface structure and chemistry, electronic orbital hierarchy and superconductivity enriched our knowledge of the 2DEG electronic properties. Special focus also was given to the conductive interfaces comprising SrTiO3(110) and amorphous oxides. This study enables us to disentangle the relative importance of the oxygen affinity of the deposited metals and the orientation-dependent energy of vacancy formation and diffusion on the creation of oxygen vacancies. In addition we report the layer by layer growth of Y:ZrO2 on SrTiO3(110), leading to the epitaxial relationship [110]YSZ(001) //[001]SrTiO3(110). This novel idea of an interface featuring

Step bunching develops in the epitaxy of SrRuO3 on vicinal SrTiO3(001) substrates. We have investigated the formation mechanisms and we show here that step bunching forms by lateral coalescence of wedgelike three-dimensional islands that are nucleated at substrate steps. After coalescence, wedgelike islands become wider and straighter with growth, forming a self-organized network of parallel step bunches with altitudes exceeding 30 unit cells, separated by atomically flat terraces. The formation mechanism of step bunching in SrRuO3, from nucleated islands, radically differs from one-dimensional models used to describe bunching in semiconducting materials. These results illustrate that growth phenomena of complex oxides can be dramatically different to those in semiconducting or metallic systems.
