Cr is one of the most polluting heavy metals that can be found in wastewater from various indus­tries, mainly tanneries; Being Cr (VI) the most toxic known for its carcinogenic character, represents a threat to health and the environment. The objective of this work is to evaluate the contamination by Cr in the Chili River and PIRS in the city of Arequipa, in order to corroborate that the values obtained are within the Maximum Permissible Limits (LMP) and Environmental Quality Standards (ECA) Established by law. A monitoring was carried out fixing four sampling points in the Chili River (Charcani, Puente Tiabaya and Uchumayo) and PIRS, specifically in the affluent of the oxidation lagoon; And the concentrations of Cr were determined by spectrophotometry and voltammetry. The values found for the samples of the Chili River, reveal that the concentrations of Cr do not surpass the ECA. However, for the PIRS affluent the average values of Cr obtained were 4.34; 7.44 and 7.67 mg / L surpassing the LMP of 2.5 mg / L established for surface water effluents from the cement, beer, paper and tannery activities, which represent a permanent environmental contamination., El Cr es uno de los metales pesados más contaminantes que se puede encontrar en aguas residua­les procedentes de diversas industrias, principalmente de las curtiembres; siendo el Cr (VI) el más tóxico conocido por su carácter carcinogénico, representa una amenaza para la salud y el medio ambiente. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo evaluar la contaminación por Cr en el río Chili y PIRS en la ciudad de Arequipa, con la finalidad de corroborar que los valores obtenidos se en­cuentren dentro de los Límites Máximos Permisibles (LMP) y Estándares de Calidad Ambiental (ECA) establecidos por la legislación. Se realizó un monitoreo fijando cuatro puntos de muestreo en el río Chili (Charcani, Puente Tiabaya y Uchumayo) y PIRS, específicamente en el afluente de la laguna de oxidación; y se determinaron las concentraciones de Cr por espectrofotometría y vol­tamperometría. Los valores encontrados para las muestras del río chili, revelan que las concentra­ciones de Cr no sobrepasan los ECA. Sin embargo, para el afluente del PIRS los valores promedio de Cr obtenidos fueron de 4.34; 7.44 y 7.67 mg/L sobrepasando el LMP de 2.5 mg/L establecido para efluentes de aguas superficiales de las actividades de cemento, cerveza, papel y curtiembre, los cuales representan una permanente contaminación ambiental
