To date, there is no empirical evidence suggesting greater jump heights or cushioned landings when using figure skating (FS) blades of different mass and design. This study examined the effect of lightweight (Gold Seal Revolution from John Wilson) and traditional (Apex Supreme from Jackson Ultima and Volant from Riedell) blades, a new prototype blade with an integrated damping system (damping blade) in two different damping configurations, and running shoes (Runfalcon from Adidas) on kinetics and kinematics during simulated on-ice landings from 0.6 m and maximal countermovement jumps on synthetic ice, and measured dampening properties of the damping blade. Seventeen participants executed trials in the six footwear conditions blinded to the different blades and acted as their own control for statistical comparison. There were no differences between the lightweight and traditional blades on the maximal vertical ground reaction force during the landing. Image analysis showed a damping effect in the damping blade that significantly decreased the landing load for all participants (mean 4.38 ± 0.68 bodyweight) (p ≤ 0.006), on average between 10.1 and 14.3% compared to lightweight and traditional blades (4.87 ± 1.01 to 5.11 ± 0.88 bodyweight). Background: Incidental gallbladder cancer is a rare event, and its prognosis is largely affected by the tumour stage and treatment. The aim of this study was to analyse the management, treatment and survival of patients with incidental gallbladder cancer in a national cohort over a decade. Methods: Patients were identified through the Swedish Registry of Gallstone Surgery (GallRiks). Data were cross-linked to the national registry for liver surgery (SweLiv) and the Cancer Registry. Medical records were collected if registry data were missing. Survival was measured as disease-specific survival. The study was divided into two intervals (2007–2011 and 2012–2016) to evaluate changes over time. Results: In total, 249 patients were identified with incidental gallbladder cancer, of whom 92 (36·9 per cent) underwent re-resection with curative intent. For patients with pT2 and pT3 disease, median disease-specific survival improved after re-resection (12·4 versus 44·1 months for pT2, and 9·7 versus 23·0 months for pT3). Residual disease was present in 53 per cent of patients with pT2 tumours who underwent re-resection; these patients had a median disease-specific survival of 32·2 months, whereas the median was not reached in patients without residual disease. Median survival increased by 11 months for all patients between the early and late periods (P = 0·030). Conclusion: Re-resection of pT2 and pT3 incidental gallbladder cancer was associated with improved survival, but survival was impaired when residual disease was present. A higher re-resection rate and more R0 resections in the later time period may have been associated with improved survival.

Rhodopsins are broadly distributed. In this work we analyzed 23 metagenomes corresponding to marine sediment samples from four regions which share cold climate conditions (Norway; Sweden; Argentina and Antarctica). In order to investigate the genes evolution of viral-rodopsins, an initial set of 6224 bacterial rhodopsins sequences according COG5524 were retrieved from the 23 metagenomes. After selection by the presence of transmembrane domains and alignment 123 viral (51) and non-viral (72) sequences (>50 aminoacids) were finally included in further analysis. Viral rhodopsin genes were homologues of Phaeocystis globosa virus and Organic lake Phycodnavirus Non-viral microbial rhodopsin genes were ascribed to Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus as well as Cryptophyta and Fungi. A re-screening using Blastp, using as queries the viral sequences previously described, retrieved 30 sequences (>100 aminoacids). Phylogeographic analysis revealed a geographycal clustering of the sequences affiliated to the viral group. This clustering was not observed for the microbial non-viral sequences. The phylogenetic reconstruction allowed us to propose the existence of a putative ancestor of viral rhodopsins (PAVR) genes related to Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi This is the first report about the existence of a phylogeographic association of the viral rhodopsins sequences from marine sediments.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The increase in liver surgery and the proportion of resections done on the margin to postoperative liver failure make preoperative calculations regarding liver volume important. Earlier studies have shown good correlation between calculations done with ImageJ and specimen weight as well as volume calculations done with more robust systems. The correlation to actual volumes of resected liver tissue has not been investigated, and this was the aim of this study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients undergoing well-defined liver resections were included in this study. Volumes calculated with ImageJ were compared to volume measurements done after the retrieval of resected liver tissue. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: A strong correlation between calculated and measured liver volume was found with sample concordance correlation coefficient (ρc) = 0.9950. The knowledge on the nature of liver resections sets liver surgeons in a unique position to be able to accurately predict the volumes to be resected and, therefore, also the volume that will remain after surgery. This becomes increasingly important with the evolvement of methods to extend the boundaries of liver surgery. ImageJ is a reliable tool to preoperatively assess liver volume.

Obemannade farkoster används allt oftare, och i allt fler roller, i dagens kon- flikter. Denna rapport ger en bred överblick över området militära obemannade farkoster, samt rekommendationer för inriktningen av framtida FoU-satsningar inom området. Överblicken över området har fokus på både system, förmågor och verksam- heter som är relevanta för Försvarsmakten. Genom att låta de insatsförmågor som definieras i FMUP (Försvarsmaktens utvecklingsplan) gå som en röd tråd genom rapporten, både när specifika system diskuteras och när möjliga scena- rier där obemannade farkoster kan vara till nytta beskrivs, har vi försökt hålla både bredd och relevans i dokumentet. Rekommendationerna vilar på en genomgång av de inriktningsdokument som producerats i Försvarsmakten, t.ex. Perspektivplanneringen och FMUP, besök vid de enheter som dagligen använder obemannade farkoster, UAV-enheten i Karlsborg och Swedec i Eksjö, samt den områdesöverblick som nämns ovan. Slutsatserna är att den effektivaste kompetensuppbyggnaden och kunskapsöver- föringen fås om man skapar breda tvärvetenskapliga projekt inom respektive systemkategori (UAV, UGV, etc) med nära kontakter till materielförsörjnings- processen och perspektivplaneringen. Dessa kan samla kompetensen inom FHS och FOI, övervaka forskningsfronten genom att bevaka tävlingar, konferenser samt delta i internationella samarbeten, samt överföra det samlade resultaten till Försvarsmakten genom demonstrationer av verkliga eller simulerade delsy- stem och interaktiva simuleringar av hela system. Just systemsimuleringar kan göras särskilt realistiska, eftersom interaktionen med de riktiga obemannade systemen till stor del sker igenom kontrollstationernas datorer. På så sätt ska- pas en känsla för både hot och möjligheter med de nya systemen, vilket gagnar både taktikutveckling och materielprocesser., Unmanned vehicles are being used in many conflicts around the world today. This report gives a broad overview of the field of unmanned vehicles, and includes suggestions of how a future research activity within the field might look like. The overview is focussed on both systems and capabilities, as well as activities that are relevant for the Swedish Armed forces. By applying the capability areas defined in the armed forced development plan (FMUP) to both commercial systems and possible scenarios, we strive to limit the scope of the report to the most relevant topics. The recommendations are based upon a review of the development documents of the Swedish Armed Forces, as well as visits to units operating unmanned systems today, and the overview described above. The suggestions are as fol- lows. Broad, cross-disciplinary projects focussing on system types, e.g. UAV, UGV etc, should be formed. These should be interacting with the procure- ment process, and different level of planning activities. They should also bring together competencies across FHS and FOI, survey current research state-of- the-art, through competitions, conferences and collaborations, and transfer the results to the armed forces through demonstrations and simulations of sys- tems and subsystems. Simulations in particular are well suited to illustrate the benefits and drawbacks of a particular unmanned systems, as the interaction with such systems is mostly carried out through the computers of the control stations, even for the real systems. In this way, participants from the armed forces can get a feeling for both threats and possibilities associated with the different future and contemporary systems, which will be of use to both tactic development and procurement activities.

A careful study of the nonlinear susceptibility of multilayered two-dimensional Cu(14 at% Mn) spin glass layers separated by thick interlayers of Cu is reported. The experiments were performed in SQUID magnetometers using an ac susceptibility technique in the field range 0-0.5 kG and dc magnetization measurements in the field range 0-10 kG. The ac susceptibility of the reentrant Ising spin glass Fe0.62Mn0.38TiO3 has been investigated in a superconducting-quantum-interference-device magnetometer. The data show a transition from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at T(N) = 32.8 K. At lower temperatures, the in-phase component of the susceptibility, chi’(omega), becomes frequency dependent and, simultaneously, a finite out-of-phase component of the susceptibility, chi”(omega)), appears. This behavior is interpreted to arise from a transition to a mixed spin-glass and antiferromagnetic state at T(g) = 25. 8 K. A dynamic scaling analysis of chi”(omega) yields critical exponents quite different from those found for the pure Ising spin glass Fe0.5Mn0.5TiO3. However, some apparent deviations from optimal scaling behavior are observed. Magnetic relaxation experiments on this reentrant spin glass reveal the existence of an aging phenomenon similar to that observed in ordinary spin glasses. It is also found that the behavior of the magnetic relaxation can be interpreted within the context of spin-glass domain theories.

Utilizing zero-field cooled magnetization measurements the nonequilibrium dynamics in a 2D spin glass film is investigated. Thin films of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) were deposited on single crystalline LaAlO3 substrates using d.c. magnetron sputtering. The quality of the films has been assessed by X-ray diffraction; YBa2Cu3O7 grows epitaxially with the c-axis parallel to the substrate normal. For some choices of the deposition parameters in the sputtering process, it was found that secondary phases were precipitated in the films. By a deliberate choice of deposition parameters, semi-coherently grown Y2O3 (yttria) inclusions could be obtained. They had square platelet or cubical shapes with sizes from 5 - 20 nm and thickness approximately 10 nm. The superconducting properties of the YBa2Cu3O7 films were investigated using SQUID magnetometry. The longitudinal component of the magnetization of a single crystal of Bi2.2Sr1.7CaCu2O8 has been investigated by SQUID-magnetometry when the magnetic field is applied at different angles 0-degrees-90-degrees with respect to the crystallographic c-axis. The time dependence of the low field susceptibility of a Bi2.2Sr1.7CaCu2O8 single crystal has been investigated in the field range 0.1-300 gauss and at temperatures 0.25 less-than-or-equal-to T/T(c) less-than-or-equal-to 0.9. The field, time and temperature dependence of the longitudinal component of the magnetization of a single crystal of BiSrCaCuO has been investigated by SQUID-magnetometry as a function of the tilt angle between the crystallographic c-axis and the applied magnetic field. The nonlinear ac susceptibility chi’-nl of the short-range Ising spin glass Fe0.5Mn0.5TiO3 has been measured using a superconducting-quantum-interference-device magnetometer. The spin-glass temperature, T(g), and the critical exponent gamma were estimated from the temperature dependence of the quadratic field term of chi’nl, yielding T(g) = 20.70 and gamma = 4.0. Static-scaling analyses, using different scaling equations, gave similar results. Using gamma and results from previous dynamic-scaling analyses, a number of critical exponents have been obtained through different scaling relations, e.g., delta = 8.4 and nu = 1.7. The results support the existence of a finite-temperature phase transition in a three-dimensional Ising spin glass.

The time dependence of the zero-field-cooled and thermoremanent magnetization of the isotropic extreme type-II superconductor PbMo6S8 has been measured at temperatures 0.7 less-than-or-equal-to T/T(c) less-than-or-equal-to 0.95 and for fields 1 less-than-or-equal-to H less-than-or-equal-to 300 G. The results show that the time dependence of the decay can be divided into three different field regimes: (1) A low-field regime with a closely logarithmic decay and a well-established critical state. The relaxation rate [partial M/partial ln(t)] increases as H-5 for the zero-field-cooled magnetization and as H-2.4 for the thermoremanent magnetization. The reduction in magnetization over 5 decades in time (0.3-3 X 10(4) s) is, at most, a few percent. (2) A crossover-field regime with a change from a logarithmic to a nonlogarithmic decay. (3) A high-field regime where the time dependence of the decay is well described by the expression delta-M approximately [ln(t/tau-0)]-alpha. The reduction in magnetization in the crossover- and high-field regimes is as large as 25-30% in the measured time interval. The results in the high-field regime are interpreted within the theory of collective flux creep. Comparisons are made with the magnetic relaxation found in anisotropic high-T(c) superconductors.

Time-dependent susceptibility measurements have been performed on multilayered two-dimensional (2D) 40-angstrom-wide Cu0.865Mn0.135 spin-glass films, separated by Cu interlayers of width 10 < w(il) < 1200 angstrom. It is found that samples with w(il) < 30 angstrom display 3D dynamic behavior. For 30 < w(il) < 600 angstrom a gradual decoupling of the spin-glass layers occurs, and for w(il) greater-than-or-equal-to 600 angstrom typical 2D behavior is observed. The effect of a finite interlayer coupling on the dynamic susceptibility is a distinct crossover from 2D dynamic behavior at short observation times to 3D dynamic behavior at long times. A clear influence on the spin-glass dynamics is still observable for interlayer thicknesses of order 500 angstrom; i.e., multilayered spin-glass films are extremely sensitive probes of the effective range of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction mediated via metallic interlayers. The results also yield information on the relation between time scale and length scale in relaxation experiments, a fundamental concept of domain theories of the spin-glass phase.

High precision magnetic relaxation measurements have been performed on BiSrCaCuO single crystals with the field H applied parallel to the c-axis. At temperatures T/T(c) > 0.5, the data exhibit two different field regimes. One for H < H* (H* corresponds to the field where full flux penetration of the sample is achieved) where the ZFC and RM magnetization relaxes logarithmically with time in agreement with the conventional flux creep model; a second one for H > H* where the relaxation follows a [ln(t/t0)]-alpha dependence. This relaxation law is predicted in the collective flux creep theory for J << J(c) as well as in the vortex-glass model. In the temperature range 0.25 < T/T(c) < 0.4, there is a change in character of the measured decay of the magnetization. This change in character is interpreted to arise from thermal fluctuations of the flux-line lattice giving rise to a considerable reduction in the pinning strength above the depinning temperature.

The zero-field dynamics of a Cu(10 at% Mn) spin glass system has been investigated by means of zero-field-cooled magnetization measurements. By subjecting the sample to specific temperature variations just before the field application, new information about the nature of the spin glass phase is obtained. The results are in accord with some predictions from domain theories on the behaviour of the magnetic relaxation in spin glasses. Specifically, the experimental results support the prediction that the spin glass dynamics is governed by an interplay between a growing domain size and the overlap length.
