Search

The current financial education framework has an increasing need to introduce tools that facilitate the application of theoretical models to real-world data and contexts. However, only a limited number of free tools are available for this purpose. Given this lack of tools, the present study provides two approaches to facilitate the implementation of an event study. The first approach consists of a set of MS Excel files based on the Fama-French five-factor model, which allows the application of the event study methodology in a semi-automatic manner. The second approach is an open-source R-programmed tool through which results can be obtained in the context of an event study without the need for programming knowledge. This tool widens the calculus possibilities provided by the first approach and offers the option to apply not only the Fama-French five-factor model but also other models that are common in the financial literature. It is a user-friendly tool that enables reproducibility of the analysis and ensures that the calculations are free of manipulation errors. Both approaches are freely available and ready-to-use.

In the past few decades, online learning has been emerging as an alternative to face-to-face learning in a traditional classroom setting. However, it is now the standard mode of delivering classes due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In relation to online education, there are predictors that might affect academic performance. A descriptive correlational quantitative approach was utilized to investigate the amount of sleep, screen time, and physical activity as predictors for the academic performance of regular 3rd year Medical Technology students of the University of Santo Tomas in board subjects during their first semester of AY 2020-2021. Participants were selected through voluntary sampling technique and online questionnaires were distributed through Google Forms to 287 volunteers that met the inclusion criteria. The questionnaire consists of 4 sections making use of Likert scales and questions mainly concerns participant’s semestral average, the amount of time spent sleeping and on doing certain activities on a screen, and how physically active they were. The descriptive statistics showed that the majority of 3rd Year Medical Technology students met the recommended physical activity and sleeping time on weekends, while failing to meet recommended screen time and sleeping time on weekdays. No significant correlation was found between any of the independent variables and academic performance. Future researchers could search for possible confounding factors influencing both the independent and dependent variables. Conducting the study on the same sample once face-to-face classes resume may allow for further discussion to be made.

The Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument is a common instrument for measuring organizational culture in English-speaking countries based on four factors: Clan, ad hoc, Market and Hierarchy. However, to date, there is no proper translation of the scale into Spanish. In this study, we describe the translation and adaptation of the instrument through Exploratory Factor Analysis with a Spanish sample (n1 = 246; 69.9% men and 30.1% women) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis with a Peruvian sample (n2 = 510; 70.4% men and 29.6% women). The result reduces the four-factor internal structure to a three-factor structure that retains the Clan, Market and Hierarchy factors, but completely excludes the ad hoc factor. Confirmatory Factor Analysis shows acceptable indicators, reliabilities are good and indication of validity is also confirmed. In conclusion, this study has given rise to the instrument in Spanish, called OCAI-12, which is suitable for evaluating organizational culture.

Polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) is a polymeric ester widely used as emulsifier in the food industry. In this work, PGPR biocatalytic synthesis was carried out in a onestep solvent-free enzymatic process using lipase CALB immobilized in Lewatit® Monoplus MP 64 by adsorption. The optimal immobilization conditions were determined: initial enzyme concentration of 13 mg of Lowry protein per mL phosphate buffer pH 7, and ricinoleic acid as a support activator. An immobilized derivative with 35.93 ± 4.90 mg of Lowry protein per g of dry support was obtained. It was used as a catalyst for PGPR production in open air and vacuum batch reactors, and the results obtained showed that only when the reaction equilibrium was shifted towards ester production by means of water removal, the PGPR produced fulfilled the European legislation (acid value ≤ 6 mg of KOH per g of product).
