Hotspots that form above upwelling plumes of hot material from the deep mantle typically leave narrow trails of volcanic seamounts as a tectonic plate moves over their location. These seamount trails are excellent recorders of Earth’s deep processes and allow us to untangle ancient mantle plume motions. During ascent it is likely that mantle plumes are pushed away from their vertical upwelling trajectories by mantle convection forces. It has been proposed that a large-scale lateral displacement, termed the mantle wind, existed in the Pacific between about 80 and 50 million years ago, and shifted the Hawaiian mantle plume southwards by about 15° of latitude. Here we use 40Ar/39Ar age dating and palaeomagnetic inclination data from four seamounts associated with the Louisville hotspot in the South Pacific Ocean to show that this hotspot has been relatively stable in terms of its location. Specifically, the Louisville hotspot—the southern hemisphere counterpart of Hawai’i—has remained within 3–5° of its present-day latitude of about 51° S between 70 and 50 million years ago. Although we cannot exclude a more significant southward motion before that time, we suggest that the Louisville and Hawaiian hotspots are moving independently, and not as part of a large-scale mantle wind in the Pacific.

Is it possible that the Hawaiian and Louisville hotspots moved in concert and thus constitute a moving reference frame for modeling plate motion in the Pacific? Alternatively, could they have moved independently, as predicted by mantle flow models that reproduce the observed latitudinal motion for Hawaii but that predict a largely longitudinal shift for the Louisville hotspot? These two end-member geodynamic models were tested during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 330 to the Louisville Seamount Trail. In addition, existing data from dredged lavas suggest that the mantle plume source of the Louisville hotspot has been remarkably homogeneous for as long as 80 m.y. These lavas are predominantly alkali basalts and likely represent a mostly alkalic shield-building stage, which is in sharp contrast to the massive tholeiitic shield-building stage of Hawaiian volcanoes. Geochemical and isotopic data for the recovered lavas during Expedition 330 will provide insights into the magmatic evolution and melting processes of individual Louisville volcanoes, their progression from shield-building to postshield and (maybe) posterosional stages, the temperature and depth of partial melting of their mantle plume source, and the enigmatic long-li

Within the Australian-Antarctic Discordance (AAD), a boundary exists between isotopically defined “Pacific-type” and “Indian-type” mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) erupted along the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR). This boundary has migrated westward beneath the easternmost AAD spreading segment at a minimum rate of 25 mm/yr since 4 Ma; however, its long-term history remains a matter of speculation. To determine if Pacific-type upper mantle has migrated westward beneath the eastern Indian Ocean basin as Australia and Antarctica drifted apart during the last 70 m.y., we present new Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data, combined with trace element and 40Ar-39Ar radiometric age determinations, for samples from Legs 28 and 29 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). Basaltic basement at these DSDP sites provides a record of their upper mantle source composition and shows regional variations consistent with upper mantle flow in this region. East of the South Tasman Rise, all DSDP basalts have 87Sr/86Sr (0.7025–0.7029) and 206Pb/204Pb (18.80–19.48) ratios typical of Pacific-type MORB indicating that Pacific-type upper mantle existed east of the Australian-Antarctic continental margin and beneath the Tasman Sea during the early stages of seafloor spreading in this region. Basalts from DSDP sites west of the AAD have high 87Sr/86Sr (0.7030–0.7035), low 206Pb/204Pb (17.99–18.10) and trace element characteristics typical of present day Indian-type SEIR MORB. Between these two regions, DSDP basalts recovered along the western margin of the South Tasman Rise have isotopic characteristics that are, in one case consistent with an Indian-type MORB source (Site 280A) and, in the second case, transitional between Pacific-type and Indian-type mantle sources. The occurrence of seafloor basalts with transitional or Indian-type isotopic characteristics well to the east of the present Indian-Pacific MORB isotopic boundary within the AAD strongly implies that Pacific-type upper mantle has migrated westward i

The primary objective of this project was to investigate the spectral irradiance and luminosity versus time for the first thermal pulse at Shot Small Boy. This was accomplished by use of spectral filters with narrow band passes, phototubes, and magnetic tape recorders with high time resolution at two locations. The measured elapsed time to the first thermal maximum was from 50 to 110 micro-seconds, depending on wavelength. A graph of radiant thermal power versus time was obtained for the thermal pulse. The delineation of the first thermal pulse, especially the rise portion, is considered to be more definite than has been obtained previously. The resolution time of the instrumentation was approximately 50 micro-seconds. Secondary objectives were to measure the total luminosity versus time and also to measure the atmospheric attenuation. These objectives were accomplished by making measurements at two distances, 2.5 and 3.5 miles, from ground zero. In the case of the total luminosity measurements, a system of filters with a spectral transmittance approximating the sensitivity response of the average human eye was used. The results are tabulated in the report.

THe objectives of Project 8.7 were to determine the thermal radiant exposure (cal/sq cm) versus distance from ground zero for a fractional-kiloton nuclear device and the total luminous flux (lumens/sq ft) as a function of both time and distance from ground zero. Theobjectives of Project 2.12d at shot Hamilton were to determine the thermal radiant exposure versus distance for a fractional-kiloton detonation, and to compare the experimentally obtained radiant-exposure values with those calculated from existing scaling laws. The tests of the Type 1 and Type 2 Chemical Corps self-recording calorimeters on Shot Cherokee resulted in the conclusion that the Type 1 instruments were unsatisfactory and that the Type 2 instruments successfully integrated radiant exposures of long duration. Instrumentation with the self-recording calorimeters and the Kidde pulse recorder for a short-duration pulse, planned for Shot Blackfoot, was not feasible because of the station contamination resulting from a prior shot; therefore, instrument functioning for short-duration pulses was not determined, and the Kidde pulse recorder, which was designed only for short-duration pulses, has not received a valid test. The actual air zero for Shot Cherokee deviated considerably from the planned air zero, resulting in a significant angle of incidence of the thermal energy on the instruments. The data presented in this report represent the thermal radiant energy actually recorded by the thermal-radiation detection instruments at the various stations. (Author)
