Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) is a major angiogenic factor that plays an important role in the formation of blood vessels during embryonic development. VEGFA has been implicated in the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia (PE), since pre-eclamptic women present with reduced levels of free circulating VEGFA. The 3' untranslated region (3'-UTR) of the VEGFA gene consists of elements that regulate the transcription and hence expression of the VEGFA protein in circulation. Hence it is suggested that variations thereof could underlie the reduced VEGFA levels observed in pre-eclamptic women. The purpose of this study was to investigate presence of the + 936C/T polymorphism, a common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 3'-UTR of the VEGFA gene, and determine its association with PE among pregnant women in Uganda. Results: There was no significant difference observed in the allele and genotype frequencies of the + 936C/T 3' UTR-VEGFA polymorphism between pre-eclamptic and normotensive pregnant women (P > 0.05). Additionally, there was no significant difference in the median plasma levels of free VEGFA among women with the wild type, CT and TT genotypes of the + 936C/T VEGFA polymorphism (median = 0.84 pg/mL (IQR = 0.39-1.41) Vs 1.05 (0.61-1.18) Vs 1.05 (1.05-1.05) respectively, p-value = 0.7161). Conclusions: These study findings indicate that the + 936C/T 3' UTR-VEGFA polymorphism had no significant association with increased susceptibility to PE among women in Uganda. Further studies with a larger sample size are recommended.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), compromising gonorrhea treatment, is a global public health concern. Improved, quality-assured NG AMR monitoring at the global level is essential. This mini-review examined NG AMR susceptibility surveillance and AMR data from the African continent from 2001 to 2020. Eligible peer-reviewed publications (n = 30) containing NG AMR data for antimicrobials currently recommended for gonorrhea treatment were included. Overall, very limited NG surveillance and AMR data was available. Furthermore, the NG AMR surveillance studies varied greatly regarding surveillance protocols (e.g., populations and samples tested, sample size, antimicrobials examined), methodologies (e.g., antimicrobial susceptibility testing method [agar dilution, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) gradient strip test, disc diffusion test] and interpretative criteria), and quality assurance (internal quality controls, external quality assessments [EQA], and verification of AMR detected). Moreover, most studies examined a suboptimal number of NG isolates, i.e., less than the WHO Global Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (GASP) and WHO Enhanced GASP (EGASP) recommendations of ≥100 isolates per setting and year. The notable inter-study variability and frequently small sample sizes make appropriate inter-study and inter-country comparisons of AMR data difficult. In conclusion, it is imperative to establish an enhanced, standardized and quality-assured NG AMR surveillance, ideally including patient metadata and genome sequencing as in WHO EGASP, in Africa, the region with the highest gonorrhea incidence globally. This will enable the monitoring of AMR trends, detection of emerging AMR, and timely refinements of national and international gonorrhea treatment guidelines. To achieve this aim, national and international leadership, political and financial commitments are imperative.

However, in LMICs, research capacity is often limited, and acquisition of funding and access to state-of-the-art technologies is challenging. The Alliance for Global Health and Science (the Alliance) was founded as a partnership between the University of California, Berkeley (USA) and Makerere University (Uganda), with the goal of strengthening Makerere University's capacity for bioscience research. The flagship program of the Alliance partnership is the MU/UCB Biosciences Training Program, an in-country, hands-on workshop model that trains a large number of students from Makerere University in infectious disease and molecular biology research. This approach nucleates training of larger and more diverse groups of students, development of mentoring and bi-directional research partnerships, and support of the local economy. Here, we describe the project, its conception, implementation, challenges, and outcomes of bioscience research workshops. We aim to provide a blueprint for workshop implementation, and create a valuable resource for bioscience research capacity strengthening in LMICs.

To shed new light on the epidemiology of brucellosis in Uganda the present study used phenotypic and molecular approaches to delineate the Brucella species, biovars, and genotypes shed in cattle milk. Brucella abortus without a biovar designation was isolated from eleven out of 207 milk samples from cattle in Uganda. These isolates had a genomic monomorphism at 16 variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) loci and showed in turn high levels of genetic variation when compared with other African strains or other B. abortus biovars from other parts of the world. This study further highlights the usefulness of MLVA as an epidemiological tool for investigation of Brucella infections.
