Producing cross-laminated timber (CLT) has opened a new market for the lumber industry in North America, while few hardwood species have been studied in the U.S. for CLT production. Combining hardwood species in mixed hardwood CLT or in hybrid CLT can be a solution to boost the market of the undervalued hardwoods. However, the knowledge gap on bonding hardwoods needs to be filled to provide evidence of feasibility. This study focused on the face bonding properties of the cross laminations made of seven hardwood species and two softwood species from the Great Lakes region using two commercial structural adhesives, the phenol resorcinol adhesive (the Resorcinol) and the melamine urea formaldehyde adhesive (the Melamine). A total of 45 combinations of the selected species were studied for the bonding strength (shear under compression) and the percentage of wood failure. For single species samples, the bond strength was positively related to the specific gravity of wood and the bond strength of hardwoods was 33% and 82% stronger than that of softwoods bonded with the Resorcinol and the Melamine respectively. The mixed hardwoods showed higher bonding strength (the Melamine: 5.45 MPa, the Resorcinol: 5.28 MPa) than mixed softwoods (the Melamine: 2.8 MPa and the Resorcinol: 2.7 MPa). Among the Resorcinol bonded mixed combinations, 54% had a percentage of wood failure less than 80%, while the Melamine bonded had only 4 out of 22 which had a percentage of wood failure less than 80%. The overall bonding strength of the hybrid combinations was 5% weaker than that of the mixed hardwoods. All hybrid combinations bonded with the Melamine met the 80% wood failure criterium, but some bonded with the Resorcinol had a percentage of wood failure less than 80%. Anatomical features, especially pore distribution, played a key role in the bonding performance. However, the Melamine adhesive consistently achieved over 80% wood failure across all pore distribution types.

The relationship between alcohol consumption and conflicts is explored in several contexts. Little research has been conducted on the subject in Wa. This research explores the relationship between alcohol consumption and conflicts where alcohol consumption is on the increase. This exploratory research is focused on the post-positivist posture. A quantitative research design is used to collect data from both primary and secondary sources for analysis using sphinx IQ software. Some self-administered questionnaires are used for data collection.  Results show that alcohol consumption is strongly associated to household conflicts. In addition, the results also show that alcohol consumption is associated to street conflicts. It is found that alcohol consumption is associated to religious conflicts. The findings imply that there should be a rigorous segmentation and hyperpersonalisation of the alcohol beverage market in order to meet the local consumers’core needs and real expectations.  To the best of authors knowledge, this is an exploratory research in the Ghanaian Upper West context that shows the relationship between excessive alcohol consumption and conflicts with some particular psychosocial and cultural factors. Violent crime such as robbery, assault, murder, sexual and domestic violence, undermine the economic and social rights of the people and distorts society’s attempts to achieve a decent and dignified life for all. To reverse the situation, in Ghana, the police have been charged with the primary responsibility of maintaining domestic security. The emerging development in the country, however, has been the blame game between the police and the public in respect of the perceived failure in security governance for the citizenry. This study examined this blame game using Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of Savannah Region as a case study. To be able to achieve the intended objective, 102 respondents were selected through both probability and non-probability sampling techniques in a convergent sequential mixed method design. Expert administered questionnaire and interviews were employed as the main methods of data collection. The study found that non-prosecution of criminals, bribery and corruption, police-criminal relationship, inadequate logistics and police personnel and stakeholders’ interference in security management, cumulatively were responsible for the low level of security administration in the study area. The study concluded that both the police and the public are responsible for the defective security architecture in the study community. Since crime impacts multiple facets of society in ways that the police and government may not be aware of until those interests are taken into consideration during project development and implementation, the study recommends a multi-sector collaboration involving the government, the police and the public to improve security governance in the area. Background: Abnormal birthweights are critical public health challenges accountable for most non-communicable diseases and perinatal mortalities. Regardless of the myriad of mixed evidence on maternal factors responsible for abnormal birthweight globally, most of these findings are attained from urban and rural settings. This study serves as one of the key pieces of evidence in view of the increasing prevalence of abnormal birthweight particularly in some parts of semi-rural Ghana. The study, therefore, aims to estimate the prevalence of abnormal birthweight and identify some possible maternal risk factors for abnormal birthweight in Northern Ghana. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Savelugu municipality from February–March 2022. A total of 356 mothers aged 16–46 years, having a neonate and attending postnatal care service, were recruited as study participants. Data were collected from maternal and child health record books and through structured interviews. To identify the maternal risk factors for abnormal birthweight, chi-square/Fischer’s exact test and multinomial logistic regression were employed as bivariate and multivariate analyses, respectively, at 95% confidence level. Results: Prevalence rates of low birthweight and macrosomia were 22.2% and 8.7%, respectively. Maternal anaemia in first trimester (AOR 3.226; 95% CI 1.372–7.784) and third trimester (AOR 23.94; 95% CI 7.442–70.01) of gestation was strong predictors for low birthweight. Mothers belonging to minority ethnic groups (AOR 0.104; 95% CI 0.011–0.995); mothers who had ≥ 8 antenatal care visits (AOR 0.249; 95% CI 0.103–0.602); and mothers having neonates whose birth length > 47.5 cm (AOR 0.271; 95% CI 0.113–0.651) had reduced odds for low birthweight. Purpose: This paper will talk about how the village's money is handled and how to help other people. During this investigation, topics like accountability and leadership in managing village finances, as well as internal control, will be broken down and looked at in depth. An investigation was done in the Indonesian villages out in the countryside. Theoretical framework: the paper discusses hypotheses related to prosocial behavior which has an impact on accountability in village government in Indonesia with a moderating effect on internal control and leadership. Design/methodology/approach: Random selection was used to select Indonesian village officials who took part in this study. There are a total of 689 village officials who participated as respondents to this study. Findings: The results of this study show that prosocial behavior and accountability can be controlled by leadership traits and internal control mechanisms. According to what the researchers found, these factors need to be used to change the other types of responsibility variables. Internal control has a strong and negative effect on both helping others and being accountable for how village money is spent. On the other hand, leadership has a strong and positive effect on both of these criteria. Internal control also has a big and important effect on who is responsible for how village money is spent. Strong leadership can make a big difference in both of these areas. Research, Practical & Social implications: The implication is, by looking at the prosocial behavior that occurs within village officials, the government is expected to compile implementing regulations and policies as technical guidelines as a reference for improving internal control and also leadership so as to further increase accountability. Sub-Saharan Africa is facing an expected doubling of human population and tripling of food demand over the next quarter century, posing a range of severe environmental, political, and socio-economic challenges. In some cases, key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are in direct conflict, raising difficult policy and funding decisions, particularly in relation to trade-offs between food production, social inequality, and ecosystem health. In this study, we used a horizon-scanning approach to identify 100 practical or research-focused questions that, if answered, would have the greatest positive impact on addressing these trade-offs and ensuring future productivity and resilience of food-production systems across sub-Saharan Africa. Through direct canvassing of opinions, we obtained 1339 questions from 331 experts based in 55 countries. We then used online voting and participatory workshops to produce a final list of 100 questions divided into 12 thematic sections spanning topics from gender inequality to technological adoption and climate change. Using data on the background of respondents, we show that perspectives and priorities can vary, but they are largely consistent across different professional and geographical contexts. We hope these questions provide a template for establishing new research directions and prioritising funding decisions in sub-Saharan Africa.

As the world grapples with unprecedented health challenges, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and now monkeypox, the focus on traditional concerns, like maternal and child health, and relatively newer pandemics, e.g., diabetes and obesity tend to get diluted. This is especially concerning in countries which face a dual challenge of both communicable and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). In this article, we list the factors that are common to both communicable disease and NCDs, and suggest measures to integrate procedures for their screening, management and prevention.

The paradoxical hesitancy to covid-19 vaccination amidst spread of the pandemic, especially the deadly Delta Variant, has remained a source of worry to the global community. Despite assurances of the security and adequacy of the immunizations and the jabs being publicly administered on top Nigerian political hierarchy, covid-19 vaccination has remained controversial in Nigeria. It appears that citizens’ apprehensions about the side effects of the vaccines are yet to be overcome. This study investigated the grounds of Nigerian citizens’ hesitancy to covid-19 vaccination. Among others, the ponder inquired the taking after question: What are factors that underlie Nigerian citizens’ hesitancy to covid-19 vaccination? The quantitative study combined Social Cognitive and Diffusion of Innovations theories as theoretical cornerstone. Survey research design was adopted to study a population of 84, 004, 084 from which a test estimate of 384 respondents was drawn. Research results show that the reported side effects of covid-19 vaccines and citizens’ distrust of Nigerian government and health system were leading factors to covid-19 vaccination hesitancy in Nigeria. NAFDAC’s warning of fake covid-19 vaccines being circulated in Nigeria was also found as a factor that underlies hesitancy to vaccination. The study recommends, among other things, that national and international health authorities should address apprehensions generated by the reported side effects of covid-19 vaccines. It was also recommended that Nigerian political leaders should rise to bridge citizens’ distrust in the government.

Traditionally, in the northern Ghana, married women are customarily required to give helping hands to their husbands in farms and other economic activities. The proceeds however belong to the men who have control over the farm income. This study sought to identify the major challenges faced by women in pito brewing in small and medium scale enterprising. Eight communities in the Upper West Region representing 362 pito brewing women were purposively sampled. The study identified nine determinants facing the pito brewers as accessing finance being the dependent variable, while establishing contact, pricing of products suitable premises, getting Employees, business registration, family support, suitable Market, packaging and storage were considered as the independent variable. The data shows that the brewers have difficulties in getting access to finance, packaging and storage. The F-ratio in the ANOVA table indicated that the overall regression model is statistically significantly and predict the dependent variable as showed with the F (1, 360) = 42.685, p (.000) < .05. Purpose: E-Procurement is more than just a system for making purchases online. Some companies implement e-procurement and succeed while others fail. This study was carried out to assess the impact and the strategic challenges of e-procurement implementation in some selected health facilities in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The main objective of the study is to assess the impact of electronic procurement implementation and its challenges in some selected health facilities in the Ashanti region of Ghana.Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive approach in trying to establish the factors that influence the success of e-procurement implementation projects. The population sample for the study was four public hospitals, PPA, and medical suppliers in the Ashanti region with the used of census survey and the data collection methods used in the study were secondary and primary data. The data was collected from the respondents through questionnaires.Findings: It was revealed that Ghana health service institutions have not yet adopted the e-procurement management system. The critical success factors for e-procurement implementation identified were: organisational and environmental issues, technical issues, and management commitment to successful e-procurement adoption. It was also revealed that for the e-procurement implementation to be successful there is the need for education and training of stakeholders, resources investment to the provision of IT and ICT network infrastructure and reliable power supply, establishment of legal and regulatory framework to serve as legal backing and employing the requisite technical personnel to man the e-procurement system effectively. This article provides a stocktake of the adaptation literature between 2013 and 2019 to better understand how adaptation responses affect risk under the particularly challenging conditions of compound climate events. Across 39 countries, 45 response types to compound hazards display anticipatory (9%), reactive (33%), and maladaptive (41%) characteristics, as well as hard (18%) and soft (68%) limits to adaptation. Low income, food insecurity, and access to institutional resources and finance are the most prominent of 23 vulnerabilities observed to negatively affect responses. Risk for food security, health, livelihoods, and economic outputs are commonly associated risks driving responses. Narrow geographical and sectoral foci of the literature highlight important conceptual, sectoral, and geographic areas for future research to better understand the way responses shape risk. When responses are integrated within climate risk assessment and management, there is greater potential to advance the urgency of response and safeguards for the most vulnerable.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to investigate the association between urbanicity (rural-urban residency), the use of solid biomass cooking fuels and the risk of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) among children under the age of 5 in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the most recent surveys of the Demographic and Health Survey Program conducted in 31 sub-Saharan African countries were pooled for the analysis. The outcome variables, cough and rapid short breath were derived from questions that asked mothers if their children under the age of 5 suffered from cough and short rapid breath in the past two weeks preceding the survey. To examine the associations, multivariable negative log-log regression models were fitted for each outcome variable. RESULTS: Higher odds ratios of cough occurred among children in urban households that use unclean cooking fuel (aOR = 1.05 95% CI = 1.01, 1.08). However, lower odds ratios were observed for rural children in homes that use clean cooking fuel (aOR = 0.93 95% CI = 0.87, 0.99) relative to children in urban homes using clean cooking fuel. We also found higher odds ratios of short rapid breaths among children in rural households that use unclean cooking fuel compared with urban residents using clean cooking fuel (aOR = 1.12 95% CI = 1.08, 1.17). CONCLUSION: Urbanicity and the use of solid biomass fuel for cooking were associated with an increased risk of symptoms of ARIs among children under five years in SSA. Thus, policymakers and stakeholders need to design and implement strategies that minimize children's exposure to pollutants from solid biomass cooking fuel. Such interventions could reduce the burden of respiratory illnesses in SSA and contribute to the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 3.9, which aims at reducing the number of diseases and deaths attributable to hazardous chemicals and pollution of air, water and soil.

The study assesses the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and organizational performance of the companies listed on Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE). It further investigates the mediating effects of employee satisfaction on the relationship between CSR and OP. The survey data was collected from 246 responses, comprising junior and senior staff, senior level managers who are in charge of the day-to-day running of the companies and they are in the position to provide adequate and sufficient information with regards to the companies. A SmartPLS (version 3.2.3) was used to analyse the data. The findings of the study show that CSR activities significantly and positively influence organizational performance. This influence is found to be pronounced especially when CSR activities are deliberately exercised toward internal stakeholders. A positive relationship was found between CSR and ESAT, while ESAT also influence OP positively.

Policy tools can shape the type and extent of adaptation, and therefore, function either as barriers or enablers for reducing risk and vulnerability. Using data from a systematic review of academic literature on global adaptation responses to climate change (n = 1549 peer-reviewed articles), we categorize the types of policy tools used to shape climate adaptation. We apply qualitative and quantitative analyses to assess the contexts where particular tools are used, along with equity implications for groups targeted by the tools, and the tools’ relationships with transformational adaptation indicators such as the depth, scope, and speed of adaptation. We find diverse types of tools documented across sectors and geographic regions. We also identify a mismatch between the tools that consider equity and those that yield more transformational adaptations. Direct regulations, plans, and capacity building are associated with higher depth and scope of adaptation (thus transformational adaptation), while economic instruments, information provisioning, and networks are not; the latter tools, however, are more likely to target marginalized groups in their design and implementation. We identify multiple research gaps, including a need to assess instrument mixes rather than single tools and to assess adaptations that result from policy implementation. Key policy insights Information-based approaches, networks, and economic instruments are the most frequently documented adaptation policy tools worldwide. This research investigated the conflicting views amongst supervisors during the teaching practicum supervision on the field experience (Off -Campus) at the University of Cape Coast. The researchers employed the pragmatist philosophy towards research which employed the sequential explanatory mixed method design. Multi-stage and the proportionate stratified sampling technique were used to select respondents for the study. Questionnaire were the main instrument for gathering quantitative responses. However, focus group discussion guide, interview and content analysis were used to gather both qualitative data for the study. The quantitative results were presented through descriptive and inferential statistics, using tables, percentages, frequencies as well means and standard deviations. The qualitative analysis was in the form of narratives and thematic analysis. The study revealed that the remarks given by supervisors have tremendous impacts on the teaching of student-teachers. The study further established that, the student-teachers careless about the remarks made by supervisors thereby rejecting especially the negative remarks of the supervisors and others also challenged the comments of supervisors when they felt what they have done was right. The result of the hypothesis revealed that there is no statistically significant difference in the reactions of student-teachers towards the remarks of supervisors in terms of gender. Food-energy-water (FEW) systems are increasingly vulnerable to natural hazards and climate change risks, yet humans depend on these systems for their daily needs, wellbeing, and survival. We investigated how adaptations related to FEW vulnerabilities are occurring and what the global community can learn about the interactions across these adaptations. We conducted a global analysis of a data set derived from scientific literature to present the first large scale assessment (n = 1,204) of evidence-based FEW-related climate adaptations. We found that the most frequently reported adaptations to FEW vulnerabilities by continent occurred in Africa (n = 495) and Asia (n = 492). Adaptations targeting food security were more robustly documented than those relevant to water and energy security, suggesting a greater global demand to address food security. Determining statistically significant associations, we found a network of connections between variables characterizing FEW-related adaptations and showed interconnectedness between a variety of natural hazards, exposures, sectors, actors, cross-cutting topics and geographic locations. Connectivity was found between the vulnerabilities food security, water, community sustainability, and response to sea level rise across cities, settlements, and key infrastructure sectors. Additionally, generalized linear regression models revealed potential synergies and tradeoffs among FEW adaptations, such as a necessity to synergistically adapt systems to protect food and water security and tradeoffs when simultaneously addressing exposures of consumption and production vs. poverty. Results from qualitative thematic coding showcased that adaptations documented as targeting multiple exposures are still limited in considering interconnectivity of systems and applying a nexus approach in their responses. As the world grapples with unprecedented health challenges, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and now monkeypox, the focus on traditional concerns, like maternal and child health, and relatively newer pandemics, e.g., diabetes and obesity tend to get diluted. This is especially concerning in countries which face a dual challenge of both communicable and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). In this article, we list the factors that are common to both communicable disease and NCDs, and suggest measures to integrate procedures for their screening, management and prevention.

In the tropics, warm temperatures and high rainfall contribute to acidic soil formation because of the significant leaching of base cations (K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+), followed by the replacement of the base cations with Al3+, Fe2+, and H+ ions at the soil adsorption sites. The pH buffering capacity of highly weathered acid soils is generally low because of their low pH which negatively impacts soil and crop productivity. Thus, there is a need to amend these soils with the right amount of inorganic liming materials which have relatively high neutralizing values and reactivity to overcome the aforementioned problems. Soil leaching and the pH buffering capacity studies were conducted to determine whether the co-application or co-amendment of a calcium carbonate product (Calciprill) and sodium silicate can improve soil nutrient retention and pH buffering capacity of the Bekenu series (Typic Paleudults). A 30 day soil leaching experiment was carried out using a completely randomized design with 16 treatments and 3 replications after which the leached soil samples were used for a pH buffering capacity study. The Calciprill and sodium silicate treatments significantly improved soil pH, exchangeable NH4+, available P, exchangeable base cations, Effective Cation Exchange Capacity (ECEC), and pH buffering capacity in comparison with the untreated soil. The improvements were attributed to the alkalinity of Calciprill and sodium silicate due to their high inherent K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+ contents. The neutralizing effects of the amendments impeded the hydrolysis of Al3+ (96.5%), Fe2+ (70.4%), and Mn2+ (25.3%) ions resulting in fewer H+ ions being produced. The co-application of Calciprill and sodium silicate reduced the leaching of Ca2+ (58.7%) and NO3− (74.8%) from the amended soils. This research investigated the conflicting views amongst supervisors during the teaching practicum supervision on the field experience (Off -Campus) at the University of Cape Coast. The researchers employed the pragmatist philosophy towards research which employed the sequential explanatory mixed method design. Multi-stage and the proportionate stratified sampling technique were used to select respondents for the study. Questionnaire were the main instrument for gathering quantitative responses. However, focus group discussion guide, interview and content analysis were used to gather both qualitative data for the study. The quantitative results were presented through descriptive and inferential statistics, using tables, percentages, frequencies as well means and standard deviations. The qualitative analysis was in the form of narratives and thematic analysis. The study revealed that the remarks given by supervisors have tremendous impacts on the teaching of student-teachers. The study further established that, the student-teachers careless about the remarks made by supervisors thereby rejecting especially the negative remarks of the supervisors and others also challenged the comments of supervisors when they felt what they have done was right. The result of the hypothesis revealed that there is no statistically significant difference in the reactions of student-teachers towards the remarks of supervisors in terms of gender. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the balance of freedom and security in Ghana’s democracy during the Covid-19 pandemic via the precautionary measures announced by the government. Ghana is considered as one of the most stable democracies in Africa. Considering the Covid-19 health crisis, via the periodic briefings of the President, this research seeks to find out if and how the President tried to strike a balance between keeping Ghanaians safe and maintaining basic freedoms. Content analysis is used to analyze the 20 speeches given by the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo, from March 2020 to March 2021 to assess the President’s choice of words regarding freedom and security. The findings indicate that, in times of the heightened security threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the President’s speeches included plentiful words of securitization. However, with the help of a detailed analysis and contextualization of the words used, the paper concludes that the President’s initiatives and directives were geared towards striking a balance between keeping Ghanaians safe and maintaining basic freedoms.

The relationships between alcohol consumption and conflicts has been explored in several contexts. Little research has been conducted on the subject in Burkina Faso. The purpose of this research is to deeply investigate the relationship between social class and alcohol consumption on one hand, and alcohol consumption and household conflicts on the other in Burkina Faso where alcohol consumption is on the increase. This exploratory research is focused on the constructivist epistemological posture. A qualitative method research design is used to collect data from both primary and secondary sources for analysis. Semi-structured interview guide was used for data collection. The results show that social class moderates the relationship between alcohol consumption and conflicts, and a high relationship between alcohol consumption and household conflicts. The findings imply that there should be a rigorous segmentation and religious hyper-personalisation of the alcohol beverage market in order to meet the local Christian consumers’ core needs and real expectations. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is an exploratory research in the West African Christianity context that shows the relationship between different social classes and alcohol consumption and conflicts. One aspect of organic farming that could significantly enhance and sustain soil health, soil quality, and crop productivity is the use of high-quality soil conditioners or organic amendments produced from agro-wastes. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize the chemical and biological properties of selected agrowastes with potential for use as organic amendments in sustaining soil health. Standard procedures were used to produce and characterize the soil conditioners, namely fermented plant juice (FPJ), fermented fruit juice (FFJ), palm kernel shell (PKS) biochar, and kitchen waste (KW) compost. The fermented juices (FPJ and FFJ), PKS biochar, and KW compost exhibited chemical and biological properties with good potential as soil conditioners or organic amendments to sustain soil health. The fermented juices contained important microbes that can solubilize P and K in soil for crop use. The high pH and C content of the biochar and compost and the high cation exchange capacity of the biochar are good indicators of the potential of these materials to sustain soil health in terms of the liming effect of acid soils, nutrient and water retention, nutrient reserves, and a suitable habitat for microbial life. Assessing global progress on human adaptation to climate change is an urgent priority. Although the literature on adaptation to climate change is rapidly expanding, little is known about the actual extent of implementation. We systematically screened >48,000 articles using machine learning methods and a global network of 126 researchers. Our synthesis of the resulting 1,682 articles presents a systematic and comprehensive global stocktake of implemented human adaptation to climate change. Documented adaptations were largely fragmented, local and incremental, with limited evidence of transformational adaptation and negligible evidence of risk reduction outcomes. We identify eight priorities for global adaptation research: assess the effectiveness of adaptation responses, enhance the understanding of limits to adaptation, enable individuals and civil society to adapt, include missing places, scholars and scholarship, understand private sector responses, improve methods for synthesizing different forms of evidence, assess the adaptation at different temperature thresholds, and improve the inclusion of timescale and the dynamics of 536 responses.

Although the literature on adaptation to climate change is rapidly expanding, little is known about the actual extent of implementation. We systematically screened >48,000 articles using machine learning methods and a global network of 126 researchers. Our synthesis of the resulting 1,682 articles presents a systematic and comprehensive global stocktake of implemented human adaptation to climate change. Documented adaptations were largely fragmented, local and incremental, with limited evidence of transformational adaptation and negligible evidence of risk reduction outcomes. We identify eight priorities for global adaptation research: assess the effectiveness of adaptation responses, enhance the understanding of limits to adaptation, enable individuals and civil society to adapt, include missing places, scholars and scholarship, understand private sector responses, improve methods for synthesizing different forms of evidence, assess the adaptation at different temperature thresholds, and improve the inclusion of timescale and the dynamics of responses.

Constraints and limits to adaptation are critical to understanding the extent to which human and natural systems can successfully adapt to climate change. We conduct a systematic review of 1,682 academic studies on human adaptation responses to identify patterns in constraints and limits to adaptation for different regions, sectors, hazards, adaptation response types, and actors. Using definitions of constraints and limits provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we find that most literature identifies constraints to adaptation but that there is limited literature focused on limits to adaptation. Central and South America and Small Islands generally report greater constraints and both hard and soft limits to adaptation. Technological, infrastructural, and ecosystem-based adaptation suggest more evidence of constraints and hard limits than other types of responses. Individuals and households face economic and socio-cultural constraints which also inhibit behavioral adaptation responses and may lead to limits. Finance, governance, institutional, and policy constraints are most prevalent globally. These findings provide early signposts for boundaries of human adaptation and are of high relevance for guiding proactive adaptation financing and governance from local to global scales.

Climate change adaptation responses are being developed and delivered in many parts of the world in the absence of detailed knowledge of their effects on public health. Here we present the results of a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature reporting the effects on health of climate change adaptation responses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The review used the 'Global Adaptation Mapping Initiative' database (comprising 1682 publications related to climate change adaptation responses) that was constructed through systematic literature searches in Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar (2013-2020). For this study, further screening was performed to identify studies from LMICs reporting the effects on human health of climate change adaptation responses. Studies were categorised by study design and data were extracted on geographic region, population under investigation, type of adaptation response and reported health effects. The review identified 99 studies (1117 reported outcomes), reporting evidence from 66 LMICs. Only two studies were ex ante formal evaluations of climate change adaptation responses. Papers reported adaptation responses related to flooding, rainfall, drought and extreme heat, predominantly through behaviour change, and infrastructural and technological improvements. Reported (direct and intermediate) health outcomes included reduction in infectious disease incidence, improved access to water/sanitation and improved food security. All-cause mortality was rarely reported, and no papers were identified reporting on maternal and child health. Reported maladaptations were predominantly related to widening of inequalities and unforeseen co-harms. Reporting and publication-bias seems likely with only 3.5% of all 1117 health outcomes reported to be negative. Governments, businesses, and civil society organizations have diverse policy tools to incentivize adaptation. Policy tools can shape the type and extent of adaptation, and therefore, function either as barriers or enablers for reducing risk and vulnerability. Using data from a systematic review of academic literature on global adaptation responses to climate change (n = 1549 peer-reviewed articles), we categorize the types of policy tools used to shape climate adaptation. We apply qualitative and quantitative analyses to assess the contexts where particular tools are used, along with equity implications for groups targeted by the tools, and the tools’ relationships with transformational adaptation indicators such as the depth, scope, and speed of adaptation. We find diverse types of tools documented across sectors and geographic regions. We also identify a mismatch between the tools that consider equity and those that yield more transformational adaptations. Direct regulations, plans, and capacity building are associated with higher depth and scope of adaptation (thus transformational adaptation), while economic instruments, information provisioning, and networks are not; the latter tools, however, are more likely to target marginalized groups in their design and implementation. We identify multiple research gaps, including a need to assess instrument mixes rather than single tools and to assess adaptations that result from policy implementation. Key policy insights Information-based approaches, networks, and economic instruments are the most frequently documented adaptation policy tools worldwide. Direct regulations, plans, and capacity building are associated with higher depth and scope of adaptation, and thus more transformational adaptation. Farming systems on peat soils are novel, considering the complexities of these organic soil. Since peat soils effectively capture greenhouse gases in their natural state, cultivating peat soils with annual or perennial crops such as pineapples necessitates the monitoring of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, especially from cultivated peat lands, due to a lack of data on N2O emissions. An on-farm experiment was carried out to determine the movement of N2O in pineapple production on peat soil. Additionally, the experiment was carried out to determine if the peat soil temperature and the N2O emissions were related. The chamber method was used to capture the N2O fluxes daily (for dry and wet seasons) after which gas chromatography was used to determine N2O followed by expressing the emission of this gas in t ha−1 yr−1. The movement of N2O horizontally (832 t N2O ha−1 yr−1 ) during the dry period was higher than in the wet period (599 t N2O ha−1 yr−1 ) because of C and N substrate in the peat soil, in addition to the fertilizer used in fertilizing the pineapple plants. The vertical movement of N2O (44 t N2O ha−1 yr−1) was higher in the dry season relative to N2O emission (38 t N2O ha−1 yr−1) during the wet season because of nitrification and denitrification of N fertilizer. The peat soil temperature did not affect the direction (horizontal and vertical) of the N2O emission, suggesting that these factors are not related. Therefore, it can be concluded that N2O movement in peat soils under pineapple cultivation on peat lands occurs horizontally and vertically, regardless of season, and there is a need to ensure minimum tilling of the cultivated peat soils to prevent them from being an N2O source instead of an N2O sink.
