The Radio Neutrino Observatory – Greenland (RNO-G) seeks discovery of ultra-high energy neutrinos from the cosmos through their interactions in ice. The science program extends beyond particle astrophysics to include radioglaciology and, as we show herein, solar observations, as well. Currently seven of 35 planned radio-receiver stations (24 antennas/station) are operational. These stations are sensitive to impulsive radio signals with frequencies between 80 and 700 MHz and feature a neutrino trigger threshold for recording data close to the thermal floor. RNO-G can also trigger on elevated signals from the Sun, resulting in nanosecond resolution time-domain flare data; such temporal resolution is significantly shorter than from most dedicated solar observatories. In addition to possible RNO-G solar flare polarization measurements, the Sun also represents an extremely useful above-surface calibration source. Using RNO-G data recorded during the summers of 2022 and 2023, we find signal excesses during solar flares reported by the solar-observing Callisto network and also in coincidence with ∼2/3 of the brightest excesses recorded by the SWAVES satellite. These observed flares are characterized by significant time-domain impulsivity. Using the known position of the Sun, the flare sample is used to calibrate the RNO-G absolute pointing on the radio signal arrival direction to sub-degree resolution. We thus establish the Sun as a regularly observed astronomical calibration source to provide the accurate absolute pointing required for neutrino astronomy.

Background Device-related thrombus (DRT) after left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is potentially linked to adverse events. Although clinical reports suggest an effect of the device type and position on the DRT risk, in-depth studies of its mechanistic basis are needed. This in silico study aimed to assess the impact of the position of non-pacifier (Watchman) and pacifier (Amulet) LAAO devices on surrogate markers of DRT risk. Methods The LAAO devices were modeled with precise geometry and virtually implanted in different positions into a patient-specific left atrium. Using computational fluid dynamics, the following values were quantified: residual blood, wall shear stress (WSS) and endothelial cell activation potential (ECAP). Results In comparison to an ostium-fitted device position, deep implantation led to more residual blood, lower average WSS and higher ECAP surrounding the device, especially on the device’s atrial surface and the surrounding tissue, suggesting increased risk for potential thrombus. For the non-pacifier device, an off-axis device orientation resulted in even more residual blood, higher ECAP and similar average WSS as compared to an ostium-fitted device position. Overall, the pacifier device showed less residual blood, higher average WSS and lower ECAP, compared to the non-pacifier device. Conclusions In this in silico study, both LAAO device type and implant position showed an impact on potential markers of DRT in terms of blood stasis, platelet adhesion and endothelial dysfunction. The ARIANNA experiment is an Askaryan radio detector designed to measure high-energy neutrino induced cascades within the Antarctic ice. Ultra-high-energy neutrinos above 1016 eV have an extremely low flux, so experimental data captured at trigger level need to be classified correctly to retain as much neutrino signal as possible. We first describe two new physics-based neutrino selection methods, or "cuts", (the updown and dipole cut) that extend the previously published analysis to a specialized ARIANNA station with 8 antenna channels, which is double the number used in the prior analysis. For a standard trigger with a threshold signal to noise ratio at 4.4, the new cuts produce a neutrino efficiency of > 95% per station-year of operation, while rejecting 99.93% of the background (corresponding to 53 remaining experimental background events). When the new cuts are combined with a pre-viously developed cut using neutrino waveform templates, all background is removed at no change of efficiency. In addition, the neutrino efficiency is extrapolated to 1,000 station-years of operation, obtaining 91%. This work then introduces a new selection method (the deep learning cut) to augment the identification of neutrino events by using deep learning meth-ods and compares the efficiency to the physics-based analysis. The deep learning cut gives 99% signal efficiency per station-year of operation while rejecting 99.997% of the background (corresponding to 2 remaining experimental background events), which are subsequently re-moved by the waveform template cut at no significant change in efficiency. The results of the deep learning cut were verified using measured cosmic rays which shows that the simulations do not introduce artifacts with respect to experimental data. The paper demonstrates that the background rejection and signal efficiency of near surface antennas meets the require-ments of a large scale future array, as considered in baseline design of the radio component

Das Nationale Antikorruptionsbüro der Ukraine (NABU) ist Ende letzten Jahres verstärkt unter Druck geraten. Generalstaatsanwaltschaft und Inlandsgeheimdienst versuchten, alle verdeckten Ermittlungen des NABU zu unterbinden. Die Fraktionschefs der beiden Regierungsparteien brachten einen Gesetzentwurf ins ukrainische Parlament ein, der das NABU faktisch unter die Kontrolle des Parlaments stellen würde. Die vorliegende Analyse verortet diese Entwicklungen in politischen Machtkämpfen und den Konflikten mit Zivilgesellschaft und internationalen Geldgeber. Dabei wird auch auf die Diskussion um die Schaffung eines separaten, unabhängigen Antikorruptionsgerichtes eingegangen.

Präsident Selenskyj und seine neue Regierung haben ein historisches Mandat erhalten, dringend notwendige Reformen umzusetzen. Die Pläne der Regierung sind ebenso ambitioniert wie umfassend. Energische politische Führung und eine Personalpolitik, die alleine auf neue Gesichter setzt, reichen aber nicht aus, um die zahlreichen Reformen zu entwerfen und deren Umsetzung in der Fläche zu gewährleisten.

This study examines the prevalence of marital contracts across marriage cohorts (1990–2019) in Germany. We further investigate the characteristics of spouses who signed a marital contract. Using cross-sectional data from the German Family Panel (pairfam, 2018/19), we employ complementary log–log and multinomial logistic regression models to predict the prevalence and the type of marital contracts. The results show that 5% of all married couples opt out of the default matrimonial property regime by signing a contract in Germany. Differentiating between contract types, most couples either specify a separation of property (40%) or modify the default community of accrued gains (31%). We find an increase in the prevalence of marital contracts across marriage cohorts. The decision to opt out of the default is strongly positively associated with self-employment that often requires the customisation of asset ownership structures within marriage. Married individuals with prior divorce experiences are more likely to opt for the separation of property, indicating that the awareness of the economic consequences of divorce promotes the individualisation of marriage. Our results are in line with the cross-national trend towards customised marriages, although the trend in Germany is less pronounced than in other countries.

In the hopes of observing the highest-energy neutrinos (E> 1 EeV) populating the Universe, both past (RICE, AURA, ANITA) and current (RNO-G, ARIANNA, ARA and TAROGE-M) polar-sited experiments exploit the impulsive radio emission produced by neutrino interactions. In such experiments, rare single event candidates must be unambiguously identified above backgrounds. Background rejection strategies to date primarily target thermal noise fluctuations and also impulsive radio-frequency signals of anthropogenic origin. In this paper, we consider the possibility that 'fake' neutrino signals may also be generated naturally via the `triboelectric effect' This broadly describes any process in which force applied at a boundary layer results in displacement of surface charge, leading to the production of an electrostatic potential difference AV. Wind blowing over granular surfaces such as snow can induce such a potential difference, with subsequent coronal discharge. Discharges over timescales as short as nanoseconds can then lead to radio-frequency emissions at characteristic MHz-GHz frequencies. Using data from various past (RICE, AURA, SATRA, ANITA) and current (RNO G, ARIANNA and ARA) neutrino experiments, we find evidence for such backgrounds, which are generally characterized by: (a) a threshold wind velocity which likely depends on the experimental trigger criteria and layout; for the experiments considered herein, this value is typically O(10 m/s), (b) frequency spectra generally shifted to the low-end of the frequency regime to which current radio experiments are typically sensitive (100-200 MHz), (c) for the strongest background signals, an apparent preference for discharges from above-surface structures, although the presence of more isotropic, lower amplitude triboelectric discharges cannot be excluded.

There is a clear consensus amongst both academic commentators and the professional community that current arrangements for strategic planning in England are inadequate. The withdrawal of central government from leadership of the proposed ‘Oxford-Cambridge Arc’ in early 2022 marks a particular nadir, not least given the ambitions for the planning of the area set out only a year earlier. This article offers a conjunctural reading of the failure of the proposed Arc spatial framework, emphasising that not only was the process of planning the Arc itself problematical, but it also faced wider governmental and political headwinds which fuelled public opposition to the scheme, reduced central government commitment and redirected political priorities elsewhere. In this context the prospects for the future of strategic planning in England appear rather bleak.

Experiments seeking to detect radio emission stemming from neutrino interactions will soon reach sensitivities that bring a detection within reach. Since experiments like RNO-G or the future IceCube-Gen2 target more than an order of magnitude more effective volume than existing experiments, the renewed and detailed study of rare backgrounds is needed. In this paper, we study the potential background from energy losses of highly energetic atmospheric muons. Due to both limited experimental measurements and limited modeling in hadronic interaction models, the expected event rate is subject to large uncertainties. Here, we estimate rate predictions and their uncertainties for different models and instrumental parameters. Vor dem Hintergrund des Krieges in der Ukraine und der Gasmangellage nimmt auch die Aufmerksamkeit für Biogas zu. Sowohl gegenwärtige als auch zukünftige Potenziale können allerdings nur sehr begrenzt zur Unabhängigkeit von russischem Erdgas beitragen. Aus Biogas gewonnenes Biomethan, das Erdgas in allen Anwendungen ersetzen kann, hat derzeit einen Anteil am Gasmarkt von etwa 1 %. Dieser Anteil kann bis 2030 auf etwa 3 % ausgeweitet werden. Darüber hinaus kann Biogas Erdgas in begrenztem Maße durch die Bereitstellung von Wärme und flexibel erzeugtem Strom ersetzen. Um diese Beiträge zur Energieversorgungssicherheit zu sichern und auszubauen, sollte vor allem die Substratbasis von Energiepflanzen stärker auf biogene Reststoffe und Abfälle umgestellt werden. Darüber hinaus können zusätzliche Anreize für eine weitergehende Flexibilisierung der Stromerzeugung aus Biogas sinnvoll sein.Against the background of the war in Ukraine and the gas shortage situation, attention for biogas is increasing. However, both current and future potentials can only contribute to independence from Russian natural gas to a very limited extent. Biomethane produced from biogas, which can replace natural gas in all uses, currently has a share of about 1 % in the gas market. This share can be expanded to about 3 % by 2030. In addition, biogas can replace natural gas to a limited extent by providing heat and flexibly generated electricity. To secure and expand these contributions to energy supply security, the substrate base should be shifted from energy crops to biogenic residues and waste. Furthermore, additional incentives for further flexibilization of electricity generation from biogas may be useful.

Background Device-related thrombus (DRT) after left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is associated with adverse outcomes, i.e. ischemic stroke or systemic embolism (SE). Data on predictors of stroke/SE in the context of DRT are limited. Aims This study aimed to identify predisposing factors for stroke/SE in DRT patients. In addition, the temporal connection of stroke/SE to DRT diagnosis was analyzed. Methods The EUROC-DRT registry included 176 patients, in whom DRT after LAAC were diagnosed. Patients with symptomatic DRT, defined as stroke/SE in the context of DRT diagnosis, were compared against patients with non-symptomatic DRT. Baseline characteristics, anti-thrombotic regimens, device position, and timing of stroke/SE were compared. Results Stroke/SE occurred in 25/176 (14.2%) patients diagnosed with DRT (symptomatic DRT). Stroke/SE occurred after a median of 198 days (IQR 37–558) after LAAC. In 45.8% stroke/SE occurred within one month before/after DRT diagnosis (DRT-related stroke). Patients with symptomatic DRT had lower left ventricular ejection fractions (50.0 ± 9.1% vs. 54.2 ± 11.0%, p = 0.03) and higher rates of non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (84.0% vs. 64.9%, p = 0.06). Other baseline parameters and device positions were not different. Most ischemic events occurred among patients with single antiplatelet therapy (50%), however, stroke/SE was also observed under dual antiplatelet therapy (25%) or oral anticoagulation (20%). Conclusion Stroke/SE are documented in 14.2% and occur both in close temporal relation to the DRT finding and chronologically independently therefrom. Identification of risk factors remains cumbersome, putting all DRT patients at substantial risk for stroke/SE. Community businesses contribute to the economic and social well-being of the communities in which they operate. As a subset of hybrid organizations, community businesses have unique challenges and opportunities related to their community embeddedness. Our study adopts an institutional logic perspective to understand the evolutionary boundaries of community business, which we argue, are shaped by the interplay of tensions between the social, market, and community logics. While existing literature discusses institutional logics from a dichotomous angle, focusing mainly on the social and market logics, we argue that the introduction of a third logic (i.e., community logics) has ramifications for the evolution of hybrid organizations. The different trajectories may have implications for the social, community, and economic impact that organizations can have. We draw on 39 qualitative interviews to provide useful insights for policy and practice on supporting community businesses.

IceCube-Gen2 is a planned next-generation neutrino observatory at the South Pole that builds upon the successful design of IceCube. Integrating two complementary detection technologies for neutrinos, optical and radio Cherenkov emission, in combination with a surface array for cosmic ray air shower detection, IceCube-Gen2 will cover a broad neutrino energy range from MeV to EeV. This index of contributions to the 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Nagoya, Japan (July 26 - August 3, 2023) describes research and development efforts for IceCube-Gen2. Included are summaries of the design, status, and sensitivity of the IceCube-Gen2 optical, surface, and radio components; performance studies of next-generation optical sensors detecting optical Cherenkov radiation from cosmic ray and neutrino events; reconstruction techniques of radio and optical events in terms of energy, direction, and neutrino flavor; and sensitivity studies of astrophysical neutrino flavors, diffuse neutrino fluxes, and cosmic ray anisotropies. The IceCube-Gen2 facility will extend the energy range of IceCube to ultra-high energies. The key component to detect neutrinos with energies above 10 PeV is a large array of in-ice radio detectors. In previous work, direction reconstruction algorithms using the forward-folding technique have been developed for both shallow ($\lesssim 20$ m) and deep in-ice detectors, and have also been successfully used to reconstruct cosmic rays with ARIANNA. Here, we focus on the reconstruction algorithm for the deep in-ice detector, which was recently introduced in the context of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G). We discuss the performance-critical aspects of the algorithm, as well as recent and future improvements, and apply it to study the performance of a station of the IceCube-Gen2 in-ice radio array. Measuring the radio emission from cosmic ray particle cascades has proven to be a very efficient method to determine their properties such as the mass composition. Efficient modeling of the radio emission from air showers is crucial in order to extract the cosmic ray physics parameters from the measured radio emission. MGMR3D is a fast semi-analytic code that calculates the complete radio footprint, i.e.\ intensity, polarization, and pulse shapes, for a parametrized shower-current density and can be used in a chi-square optimization to fit a given radio data. It is many orders of magnitude faster than its Monte Carlo counterparts. We provide a detailed comparative study of MGMR3D to Monte Carlo simulations, where, with improved parametrizations, the shower maximum $\Xmax$ is found to have very strong agreement with a small dependency on the incoming zenith angle of the shower. Another interesting feature we observe with MGMR3D is sensitivity to the shape of the longitudinal profile in addition to $\Xmax$. This is achieved by probing the distinguishable radio footprint produced by a shower having a different longitudinal profile than usual. Furthermore, for the first time, we show the results of reconstructing shower parameters for LOFAR data using MGMR3D, and obtaining a $\Xmax$ resolution of 22 g/cm$^2$ and energy resolution of 19\%.

The current generation of air shower radio arrays has demonstrated that the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum Xmax can be reconstructed with high accuracy. These experiments are now contributing to mass composition studies in the energy range where a transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic-ray sources is expected. However, we are still far away from an unambiguous interpretation of the data. Here we propose to use radio measurements to derive a new type of constraint on the mass composition, by reconstructing the shower length L. The low-frequency part of the Square Kilometer Array will have an extremely high antenna density of roughly 60.000 antennas within one square kilometer, and is the perfect site for high-resolution studies of air showers. Analysis of radio signals from cosmic-ray induced air showers has been shown to be a reliable method to extract shower parameters such as primary energy and depth of shower maximum. The required detailed air shower simulations take 1 to 3 days of CPU time per shower for a few hundred antennas. With nearly $60,000$ antennas envisioned to be used for air shower studies at the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), simulating all of these would come at unreasonable costs. We present an interpolation algorithm to reconstruct the full pulse time series at any position in the radio footprint, from a set of antennas simulated on a polar grid. Relying on Fourier series representations and cubic splines, it significantly improves on existing linear methods. We show that simulating about 200 antennas is sufficient for high-precision analysis in the SKA era, including e.g. interferometry which relies on accurate pulse shapes and timings. We therefore propose the interpolation algorithm and its implementation as a useful extension of radio simulation codes, to limit computational effort while retaining accuracy., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures. Glacial ice is used as a target material for the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos, by measuring the radio signals that are emitted when those neutrinos interact in the ice. Thanks to the large attenuation length at radio frequencies, these signals can be detected over distances of several kilometers. One experiment taking advantage of this is the Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland (RNO-G), currently under construction at Summit Station, near the apex of the Greenland ice sheet. These experiments require a thorough understanding of the dielectric properties of ice at radio frequencies. Towards this goal, calibration campaigns have been undertaken at Summit, during which we recorded radio reflections off internal layers in the ice sheet. Using data from the nearby GISP2 and GRIP ice cores, we show that these reflectors can be associated with features in the ice conductivity profiles; we use this connection to determine the index of refraction of the bulk ice as n=1.778 +/- 0.006.

We explore the possibilities of measuring the longitudinal profile of individual air showers beyond $X_{\rm max}$ when using very dense radio arrays such as SKA. The low-frequency part of the Square Kilometre Array, to be built in Australia, features an enormous antenna density of about $50,000$ antennas in the inner core region of radius 500 m, with a frequency band from 50 to 350 MHz. From CoREAS simulations, a SKA-Low antenna model plus noise contributions, and adapted LOFAR analysis scripts, we obtain a resolution in the shower maximum $X_{\rm max}$ and energy that is considerably better than at LOFAR. Already from this setup, we show that at least one additional parameter of the longitudinal profile can be measured. This would improve mass composition analysis by measuring an additional composition-dependent quantity. Moreover, it would offer an opportunity to discriminate between the different predictions of hadronic interaction models, hence contributing to hadronic physics at energy levels beyond man-made accelerators., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. In-ice radio detectors are a promising tool for the discovery of EeV neutrinos. For astrophysics, the implications of such a discovery will rely on the reconstruction of the neutrino arrival direction. This paper describes a first complete neutrino arrival direction reconstruction for detectors employing deep antennas such as RNO-G or planning to employ them like IceCube-Gen2. We will didactically introduce the challenges of neutrino direction reconstruction using radio emission in ice, elaborate on the detail of the algorithm used, and describe the obtainable performance based on a simulation study and discuss its implication for astrophysics., Comment: Minor updates for clarity; version accepted for publication

Background Germany is highly dependent on natural gas, the availability of which has become uncertain due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Biogas provision in Germany is realized by more than 9500 mainly farm-side biogas plants that have the potential to increase the security of gas supply. Main text To assess the potential contribution of biogas to a secure gas supply in Germany, we combine a literature-based analysis of the current status and potentials of the biogas supply chain with calculations of the marginal costs for producing biogas under the current market conditions. Biogas provided 50 TWh of final energy in Germany in 2021, primarily in the form of power and heat. The production of biomethane, which can in principle replace natural gas when fed into the gas grid, amounted to 10 TWh in terms of the lower heating value, which corresponds to a share of about 1% of the German gas market in 2021. However, at the end of 2021, biogas significantly contributed to the provided power (13 TWh or 22% of power supply from natural gas) combined with co-generated heat (13 TWh or 2% of heat supply from natural gas). Increasing flexible power provision from biogas is promising under the current power market conditions. In contrast, the current biogas substrate mix will lead to crucial limitations: 75% of the input into German biogas are energy crops, which are limited in availability under rising agricultural prices. Conclusions and recommendations In conclusion, biogas can only make up a small share of the current natural gas consumption. An immediate programme to mobilize the use of biogenic by-products, waste, and cultivated biomass without requiring additional land is recommended. We also propose measures to increase the flexibility of power production and heat use and more greenhouse gas-related incentives of biogas supply for the medium term. Finally, we see the need for additional efforts for non-food feedstock mobiliza

Innovation can be a key mechanism to address some of society's greatest challenges, or it can contribute to them. There is extensive conceptual academic literature focused on how policy can be used to create more positive societal and environmental impacts through innovation, however, little empirical evidence exists to understand to what extent innovation policy in particular embeds the principles of social and environmental sustainability into its discourse. We begin to address this lack of evidence by using a critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics approach to explore how UK Innovation Policy embeds the concepts of societal and environmental impact, and how it balances these at times conflicting paradigms into policy documents. We find that although there is some inclusion of key environmental and societal words these are predominately secondary to economic themes, signalling a ‘business as usual’ approach to innovation policy.

Unter dem geografischen Südpol liegt das IceCube Neutrino Observatorium. Es nutzt einen Kubikkilometer Gletschereis, um Sekundärteilchen aus Neutrinointerkationen zu detektieren. Der Detektor besteht aus insgesamt 5160 optischen Sensoren, die das Cherenkov Licht der relativistischen, geladenen Teilchen messen. Um die Sensitivität und das Detektionsvermögen zu erhöhen sind Vergrößerungen des Detektors mit neuentwickelten optischen Sensoren geplant. Mindestens einer dieser neuen Sensoren soll den Messbereich aus dem optischen Bereich in den UV Bereich erweitern, wobei eine neu entwickelte wellenlängenschiebende Technologie verwendet wird. Um die Verbesserungen dieser neuen Module zu verstehen, wurde ein Kalibrierungsgerät gebaut, getestet und zweimal bei einer in-situ Messung am geografischen Südpol verwendet. Die Messung wurde in dem offenen SPICEcore borehole durchgeführt. In dem Kalibrierungsgerät waren sowohl Lichtquelle, als auch Detektor verbaut. Um die Eiseigenschaften zu vermessen, wurde Licht in möglichst kurzen Pulsen in das Eis gestrahlt. Der Detektor hat nun die Zeitverteilung gemessen, mit der die Photonen wieder zu dem Detektor zurückgestreut werden. Zur Detektion nutzt das Kalibrierungsgerät die gleiche wellenlängenschiebende Technologie, wie die neuentwickelten optischen Module. Die Messung wurde für Wellenlängen zwischen 245 nm und 400 nm an mehreren Tiefen in einem Bereich, in dem auch IceCube liegt durchgeführt. Diese in-situ Messungen sind der erste erfolgreiche Einsatz der neuen wellenlängenschiebenden Technologie. Mit einem likelihood fit wurde die Messung mit einer Simulation verglichen, welche die Absorption und Streuung der Photonen im Eis als Parameter variiert. Mit dieser Analyse konnte für jede Wellenlänge und Tiefe am besten passende Parameter mit Unsicherheiten, bestehend aus statistischen und systematischen Fehlern gefunden werden. It instruments one cubic kilometer of glacial ice to detect secondary particles originating from neutrino interactions. The detector consists of 5160 optical sensors, which measure the Cherenkov light of these relativistic, charged particles. In order to increase the sensitivity and detection range, new extensions with newly developed optical sensors are planned. At least one of these new sensors is supposed to expand the detection range from the optical into the UV range, using a new wavelength shifting technology. To understand the improvements of these new modules, the UV calibration device was built, tested, and deployed twice in in-situ measurements at the geographic South Pole. The measurement was carried out in the open SPICEcore borehole. A light source and a detector were included in the design of the UV calibration device. To measure the ice properties, the light was pulsed in the ice as short as possible. The detector measured the timing distribution of the light getting scattered back. For the detection, the wavelength shifting technology developed for the new optical sensors is used. The measurement was carried out with four wavelengths between 245 nm and 400 nm at several depths, some within the IceCube range. These in-situ measurements successfully applied the new wavelength shifting technology for the first time. Using a likelihood fit, the measurements were compared to a simulation, which varied the absorption and scattering coefficients of the photons in the ice as parameters. With this analysis, a best-fitting set of parameters could be found for each wavelength and depth. The uncertainties are very conservative, consisting of statistical and systematic errors. The most significant influence on the uncertainties is caused by the insufficient time resolution of the detection system. In der klassischen Komplexitätstheorie werden worst-case Laufzeiten von Algorithmen typischerweise einzig abhängig von der Eingabegröße angegeben. In dem Kontext der parametrisierten Komplexitätstheorie versucht man die Analyse der Laufzeit dahingehend zu verfeinern, dass man zusätzlich zu der Eingabengröße noch einen Parameter berücksichtigt, welcher angibt, wie strukturiert die Eingabe bezüglich einer gewissen Eigenschaft ist. Ein parametrisierter Algorithmus nutzt dann diese beschriebene Struktur aus und erreicht so eine Laufzeit, welche schneller ist als die eines besten unparametrisierten Algorithmus, falls der Parameter klein ist. Der erste Hauptteil dieser Arbeit führt die Forschung in diese Richtung weiter aus und untersucht den Einfluss von verschieden Parametern auf die Laufzeit von bekannten effizient lösbaren Problemen. Einige vorgestellte Algorithmen sind dabei adaptive Algorithmen, was bedeutet, dass die Laufzeit von diesen Algorithmen mit der Laufzeit des besten unparametrisierten Algorithm für den größtmöglichen Parameterwert übereinstimmt und damit theoretisch niemals schlechter als die besten unparametrisierten Algorithmen und übertreffen diese bereits für leicht nichttriviale Parameterwerte. Motiviert durch den allgemeinen Erfolg und der Vielzahl solcher parametrisierten Algorithmen, welche eine vielzahl verschiedener Strukturen ausnutzen, untersuchen wir im zweiten Hauptteil dieser Arbeit, wie man solche unterschiedliche homogene Strukturen zu mehr heterogenen Strukturen vereinen kann. Ausgehend von algebraischen Ausdrücken, welche benutzt werden können, um von Parametern beschriebene Strukturen zu definieren, charakterisieren wir klar und robust heterogene Strukturen und zeigen exemplarisch, wie sich die Parameter tree-depth und modular-width heterogen verbinden lassen. Wir beschreiben dazu effiziente Algorithmen auf heterogenen Strukturen mit Laufzeiten, welche im Spezialfall mit den homogenen Algorithmen übereinstimmen., In classical complexity theory, the worst-case running times of algorithms depend solely on the size of the input. In parameterized complexity the goal is to refine the analysis of the running time of an algorithm by additionally considering a parameter that measures some kind of structure in the input. A parameterized algorithm then utilizes the structure described by the parameter and achieves a running time that is faster than the best general (unparameterized) algorithm for instances of low parameter value. In the first part of this thesis, we carry forward in this direction and investigate the influence of several parameters on the running times of well-known tractable problems. Several presented algorithms are adaptive algorithms, meaning that they match the running time of a best unparameterized algorithm for worst-case parameter values. Thus, an adaptive parameterized algorithm is asymptotically never worse than the best unparameterized algorithm, while it outperforms the best general algorithm already for slightly non-trivial parameter values. As illustrated in the first part of this thesis, for many problems there exist efficient parameterized algorithms regarding multiple parameters, each describing a different kind of structure. In the second part of this thesis, we explore how to combine such homogeneous structures to more general and heterogeneous structures. Using algebraic expressions, we define new combined graph classes of heterogeneous structure in a clean and robust way, and we showcase this for the heterogeneous merge of the parameters tree-depth and modular-width, by presenting parameterized algorithms on such heterogeneous graph classes and getting running times that match the homogeneous cases throughout.

BACKGROUND Device-related thrombus (DRT) after left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is associated with adverse outcomes, i.e. ischemic stroke or systemic embolism (SE). Data on predictors of stroke/SE in the context of DRT are limited. AIMS This study aimed to identify predisposing factors for stroke/SE in DRT patients. In addition, the temporal connection of stroke/SE to DRT diagnosis was analyzed. METHODS The EUROC-DRT registry included 176 patients, in whom DRT after LAAC were diagnosed. Patients with symptomatic DRT, defined as stroke/SE in the context of DRT diagnosis, were compared against patients with non-symptomatic DRT. Baseline characteristics, anti-thrombotic regimens, device position, and timing of stroke/SE were compared. RESULTS Stroke/SE occurred in 25/176 (14.2%) patients diagnosed with DRT (symptomatic DRT). Stroke/SE occurred after a median of 198 days (IQR 37-558) after LAAC. In 45.8% stroke/SE occurred within one month before/after DRT diagnosis (DRT-related stroke). Patients with symptomatic DRT had lower left ventricular ejection fractions (50.0 ± 9.1% vs. 54.2 ± 11.0%, p = 0.03) and higher rates of non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (84.0% vs. 64.9%, p = 0.06). Other baseline parameters and device positions were not different. Most ischemic events occurred among patients with single antiplatelet therapy (50%), however, stroke/SE was also observed under dual antiplatelet therapy (25%) or oral anticoagulation (20%). CONCLUSION Stroke/SE are documented in 14.2% and occur both in close temporal relation to the DRT finding and chronologically independently therefrom. Identification of risk factors remains cumbersome, putting all DRT patients at substantial risk for stroke/SE. Further studies are necessary to minimize the risk of DRT and ischemic events.

Presented here are the ray tracer's implementation, and a first simulation and reconstruction using this new module. This shows that changing the ice model from an exponential profile to a double-exponential profile (firn model) has non-trivial effects on the timing. As this is important for distance and direction reconstruction of neutrino events, we hope to investigate this influence further once other effects like in-ice reflections or birefringence are implemented in this ray tracer as well.

The experiment will be composed of 35 autonomous stations deployed over a 5 x 6 km grid near NSF Summit Station in Greenland. The electronics chain of each station is optimized for sensitivity and low power, incorporating 150 - 600 MHz RF antennas at both the surface and in ice boreholes, low-noise amplifiers, custom RF-over-fiber systems, and an FPGA-based phased array trigger. Each station will consume 25 W of power, allowing for a live time of 70% from a solar power system. The communications system is composed of a high-bandwidth LTE network and an ultra-low power LoRaWAN network. I will also present on the calibration and DAQ systems, as well as status of the first deployment of 10 stations in Summer 2021.

The detection of the radio emission following a neutrino interaction in ice is a promising technique to obtain significant sensitivities to neutrinos with energies above 10 PeV. The detectable radio emission stems from particle showers in the ice. So far, detector simulations have considered only the radio emission from the primary interaction of the neutrino. We present how the simulation code NuRadioMC was extended to cover secondary interactions from muons and taus. Muons and taus, created by an interaction of the corresponding neutrino, can create several additional detectable showers during their propagation through the ice, which adds up to 25% to the effective volume of neutrino detectors. It provides a signature for the neutrino flavor and improves event reconstruction if multiple of these showers are detected. We simulated the signatures of secondary interactions for the RNO-G detector in Greenland and the proposed radio detector of IceCube-Gen2. We also find that the background of atmospheric muons from cosmic rays is non-negligible for in-ice arrays and that an air shower veto should be considered helpful for radio detectors.
