The purpose of the study was to evaluate the pedagogical strategies and the perception of athletes in Bucaramanga. A non-experimental cross-sectional design was used with a questionnaire applied to a sample of 60 athletes (28 women and 32 men) to evaluate the relevance of the pedagogical strategies employed by the sports coaches. The results indicate that athletes positively valued the active, reflective and competency-based learning strategies, suggesting that they perceive that it allows them to actively participate in their learning process, areas for improvement were also identified, such as the empowerment of athletes in the planning of their own training program, allowing them to question assumptions, develop specific skills and promote intrinsic motivation. It is concluded that further research should continue on strategies for the development and performance of athletes, the integration of technology in training, the role of mentoring, psychological support in the motivation and adherence of the athlete. &nbsp, El estudio tiene como finalidad evaluar las estrategias pedagógicas y la percepción de los atletas en Bucaramanga. Se empleo un diseño no experimental transversal con un cuestionario aplicado a una muestra de 60 atletas (28 mujeres y 32 hombres) para evaluar la pertinencia de las estrategias pedagógicas empleadas por los entrenadores deportivos. Los resultados indican que los atletas valoraron positivamente las estrategias de aprendizaje activo, reflexivo y basado en competencias, sugiriendo que perciben que les permite participar activamente en su proceso de aprendizaje, también se identificaron áreas de mejora, como el empoderamiento de los atletas en la planificación de su propio programa de entrenamiento, permitiendo cuestionar supuestos, desarrollar habilidades específicas y promover la motivación intrínseca. Se concluye que se debe continuar investigando en estrategias para el desarrollo y rendimiento de los atletas, la integración de la tecnología en el entrenamiento, el papel de la tutoría, el apoyo psicológico en la motivación y adherencia del atleta.

Background: The Higher Education in Nursing requires providing students with skills such as critical and reflective thinking about the actions to be carried out so that they are capable of providing humanised and quality care in an increasingly complex and technified society. Participatory teaching methodologies promote the development of these skills. Objectives: to explore the potential of photovoice, storytelling and poetry as instruments capable of encouraging reflection. To identify through images (photovoice) and poetic narratives (storytelling and poetry) the perception that students of the nursing degree express about nursing care. Design: qualitative study in the framework of the socio-critical paradigm, using photovoice, storytelling and poetry in the field of care. Participants: first-year undergraduate nursing students at two Spanish universities in the academic year 2021-2022. Methodology: 48 images were shown and students were asked to select one, write a narrative and generate a short poem connected to the image. Subsequently, a content analysis was conducted of those poems evoked by the five photographs most chosen by the students. The analysis was supported by qualitative data analysis software. A total of 67 contributions from 67 students were analysed. Results: the concepts addressed in the poems and the compositions generated reveal how critical humanist thinking and reflection on the subject of care developed. The topics identified were care, accompaniment throughout the life cycle, working on the basis of values and caring for small details as subcategories of nursing care. Conclusion: The combination of different tools in university education has encouraged reflection and enabled students to identify for themselves the importance of humanised care. Working on the theoretical foundation in an active way can reduce the gap between theory and practice and foster the empowerment of the nursing identity.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate how professionals who are continuing their education rate a higher education quality management course with an emphasis on reflective learning and real problem-solving. The audited course consists of module-based teaching, while students work on an improvement project at their workplace between course sessions. This study has a twofold aim: to contribute to the design of quality improvement courses based on doing as we learn and to offer insight into the use of a final grading method that consist of a folder with reports from the intermediate work steps and a final report. Design/methodology/approach After completing the course, students received a survey with questions and statements about the course content, delivery and final grading methods. They answered these questions on a seven-point Likert scale and also answered open-ended questions. Findings It is clear that professional students value the interweaving of theory with real-life training, and they value module-based teaching in which theory is reviewed and applied to practical problems. Reflective learning was achieved through feedback from both teachers and fellow students on various interim reports. Students’ employers benefit from the course, as students gain experience with quality improvement. The grading of a final report on the improvement project based on three sub-assignments was highly appreciated. Practical implications Developers in courses in quality improvement benefit from learning how this course is structured, assessed and how participants perceived its components.Originality/valueThe course design with modules and intermediate work steps, where the students apply theory in quality improvement to a real project at their workplace, is an original concept. The modules correspond to the plan, do, check and act (PDCA) methodology.

This paper recommends educators to integrate meaningful and consistent reflective activities into their history-related lessons to further develop student’s historical empathy.

We review the literature on how organizations learn from information system (IS) incidents. We identify three modes of learning depending on the practices that constitute the learning process, the specific actors who play roles in learning, the temporal orientation of the learning practices, and the specific contextual focus of the learning. The literature focuses primarily on learning from past experience to draw lessons for future incidents (reflective learning mode). Yet, a growing stream of literature stresses the importance of learning through engagement with present incidents (embedded learning mode), and a few studies suggest that organizations can learn prospectively to prepare for future incidents (prospective learning mode). We argue that although these three learning modes are effective, they do not adequately explain how organizations learn from IS incidents when used in isolation. Since IS incidents unfold increasingly as sets of interacting events across information systems and organizational settings, organizational learning needs to be theorized as an iterative process among these learning modes. We synthesize these three learning modes into an integrative framework and theorize about their supportive and inhibiting relations. We suggest some opportunities for future research, which would advance our understanding of how organizations learn from IS incidents.

The tremendous progress of NMT in the last few years has not only shaken the translation professions, it has also changed the world for lay users. Freely available NMT systems such as DeepL and Google Translate have found their way into many of our daily routines. They offer a wide range of new possibilities for communication, but they also hide some potential for miscommunication and other risks (Nurminen, 2019). While the implications for translators and translation students are being investigated and recommendations have been made in the literature, the use of NMT by other communication professionals has not yet become the centre of attention. This paper presents an action research project made possible by the integration of an NMT literacy class within a larger course on applied linguistics for future journalists, communication experts, and language teachers. All students attended a one-off lecture and seminar on machine translation, focussing on its potential and risks for language professionals (O’Brien & Ehrensberger-Dow, 2020). Before and after the classes, they were asked to complete a short questionnaire about their awareness of NMT-related risks and problems. In addition, focus group discussions afterwards with representatives from the three specialisations provided insights into the students' perceptions of MT with respect to potential bias, trust, influence on creativity and awareness of other cross-linguistic issues. By addressing students, we would like to illustrate the potential of instituting future changes in practices of language professionals and at the same time explore the influence of MT literacy (Bowker & Buitrago Ciro, 2019) on metalinguistic awareness.

This study was conducted in one of the refugee camps in Rwanda to investigate the effectiveness of the blog as a teaching and learning tool.  The case study used two parallel classes of 20 students each, one using blog as a revision and reflective tool while the other relied solely on traditional learning and revision methods. On completion of the course, both classes received equal time to prepare for a common test. The results of students from two classes showed that the blog improves student revision and critical reflective skills outside the classroom. The student feedback survey showed that blog encouraged students to do more revision as they enjoyed using computer tools in their learning and that most of them have wish to see blogs being used more widely.

This article is based on an international comparative social policy module held annually at MalmöUniversity (Sweden) with partner universities from several countries. Our study examines the results ofintra- and interpersonal dynamics among participants and lecturers, which we call "productive tension", inrelation to overarching questions about knowledge acquisition and the importance of reflexivity andreflectivity in the learning process. Students and faculty create a "community of practice" (CoP) (Lave &Wenger 1991) that benefits from a continuous interactive environment and direct engagement. Our studyuses a mixed method approach. The analysis considers qualitative data from interviews with theparticipating students and quantitative data from questionnaires. In this article, we focus on theproductive tension inherent in the reflective and reflexive processes. Reflective and reflexive processes areidentified that influence the students' experience of cross-border cooperation and their professionalidentity. Our study also demonstrates how the knowledge about "Social Work" as a profession can bebroadened through international comparative teaching and learning. This study aims to examine the use of reflective pedagogies in sustainability leadership education by investigating two specific pedagogical tools-the Portfolio and Pod-employed by the Master's in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability (MSLS) program at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden. The study analyzed data gathered from student surveys, teacher interviews, and staff reflections to determine the benefits and challenges faced by students and staff in implementing and engaging with these pedagogical tools. Benefits include the provision of distinct structures to guide student reflection towards individual skill development and the use of collective reflection to encourage generative dialogue between students and staff. This holds benefits for collaboration, self-awareness, understanding of multiple perspectives, and creating self-directed graduates. Staff and students also, however, suggest a number of challenges. These include the 'constrictive' nature of guided reflection and the emotional and mental load faced by staff in hosting and holding students through often challenging personal reflective processes. For the potential of reflective pedagogies to be truly realized for Education for Sustainable Development in higher education institutions need to develop an understanding of the impacts that reflective pedagogies have on students and teachers and create institutional structures to support them. © 2020 by the authors., open access

The earlier mentioned tool is an adaptation of Ritchhart’s scale (2015) for the assessment of cultural forces from the model of the Culture of Thinking. The selected sample of preservice teachers encompasses 700 university students of education from 7 faculties of education in Spain. Research results reveal that the use of the scale displayed high reliability and suitability. Similarly, significant statistical differences were observed in the eight scales of cultural forces assessment, where the prime-valued by the students were interactions, expectations, environment, language and time. Apropos of statistics, research results manifest as relevant. This study investigated contemplative pedagogy and practice within New Zealand universities, in the form of both mindfulness interventions targeting wellness and connection, and classroom pedagogy fostering attentional, critical, and creative thinking. Little previous research had been undertaken on the topic in this country. The integrated research design developed for the project - Critical Realist Mixed Methods Sequential Explanatory Design (CRMMSED) - included two phases, an extensive exploratory survey phase (n = 258), and an intensive, in-depth interview phase (n = 22). Critical Realist abductive and dialectical analyses took place alongside statistical and thematic analyses. The findings show that educators incorporate contemplative methods to address pressing issues ranging from student stress to climate change. Most contemplative teaching takes place within extant disciplinary framings. Key entry points into academia are through reflective practice in the contexts of professional education, critical social justice teaching, and creative projects. The study suggests that contemplative education arises in response to complex social factors involving several disconnects - with nature, people, the self, and the capacity for self-transcendence. This emergence is an outworking of historical forces and a response to research showing the potential of contemplative education for ameliorating difficult problems.

This study aims to unpack the reflective learning processes involved in developing a Masters’ research project proposal as part of a multidisciplinary Research Design course. Using inductive analysis, we explored students’ reflective blogs written over a period of a semester and defined the reflections according to an adaptation of Hatton and Smith’s (1995) framework. Our findings are that the nature of each individual blog topic affected the quality and level of reflection, which in turn is affected by the ‘learning ecology’ (Harvey, Coulson, & McMaugh, 2016 p. 12). More highly scaffolded blogs showed greater evidence of reflective practice. Likewise the nature of the practice (starting research) influenced reflection, since many processes are internal rather than requiring explicit practice to reflect on. In addition, as nascent practitioner researchers, the students are also involved in reflexivity rather than reflection and therefore some topics encouraged this form of reflection more than others did. This study is significant in that it explores reflection in research and practitioner contexts, focuses on early career researchers/practitioners and brings a multidisciplinary perspective.

Experiential learning theory states that reflection is just as important to learning as action. However, business educators often overlook reflection in their experiential learning activities, especially when it’s understood as a dialogue process. Drawing on reflective learning theory, we explored the case of an undergraduate business programme that has been combining experiential learning with three different reflective learning mechanisms for the past ten years. Results show that: (1) reflective dialogue is central for ensuring that impressions from experience translate into better-defined learning outcomes, (2) this dialogue process greatly benefits from a closely guided process, and (3) different reflection mechanisms contribute differently to the learning process. Considering how fast experiential learning has popularised in business schools, this study alerts educators to the importance of combining their experiential learning activities with a guided process of reflection. Otherwise, educators risk students extracting meagre, wrong or misleading impressions from their experience.

This study aims to unpack the reflective learning processes involved in developing a Masters’ research project proposal as part of a multidisciplinary Research Design course. Using inductive analysis, we explored students’ reflective blogs written over a period of a semester and defined the reflections according to an adaptation of Hatton and Smith’s (1995) framework. Our findings are that the nature of each individual blog topic affected the quality and level of reflection, which in turn is affected by the ‘learning ecology’ (Harvey, Coulson, & McMaugh, 2016 p. 12). More highly scaffolded blogs showed greater evidence of reflective practice. Likewise the nature of the practice (starting research) influenced reflection, since many processes are internal rather than requiring explicit practice to reflect on. In addition, as nascent practitioner researchers, the students are also involved in reflexivity rather than reflection and therefore some topics encouraged this form of reflection more than others did. This study is significant in that it explores reflection in research and practitioner contexts, focuses on early career researchers/practitioners and brings a multidisciplinary perspective.

In the linguistics class, they studied a chapter related to how adults learn a language, and the phases they go through. Due to the relevance of this topic, the instructor asked pre-service English teachers to reflect and examine on their learning critically from two different perspectives - my reflection as a language learner and my reflection on learning. This essay used a series of open and reflective questions as the primary source of data and asked 20 pre-service English teachers to write a two-page reflection paper about their experience learning English. For the purpose of this essay, data analysis was conducted using the grounded theory approach that involved comparing a piece of data with others. Eight essays were selected using random sampling. The results exposed the different challenges and strategies that pre-service English teachers have gone through so as to learn the language and how these have changed along the years. To deal with the complex variability between individual lifestyles and settings, collaborating with end-users to develop interventions tailored to their unique circumstances has been suggested as a potential way to improve effectiveness and adherence. Co-creation of public health interventions using participatory methodologies has shown promise but lacks a framework to make this process systematic. The aim of this paper was to identify and set key principles and recommendations for systematically applying participatory methodologies to co-create and evaluate public health interventions. Methods: These principles and recommendations were derived using an iterative reflection process, combining key learning from published literature in addition to critical reflection on three case studies conducted by research groups in three European institutions, all of whom have expertise in co-creating public health interventions using different participatory methodologies. Results: Key principles and recommendations for using participatory methodologies in public health intervention co-creation are presented for the stages of: Planning (framing the aim of the study and identifying the appropriate sampling strategy); Conducting (defining the procedure, in addition to manifesting ownership); Evaluating (the process and the effectiveness) and Reporting (providing guidelines to report the findings). Three scaling models are proposed to demonstrate how to scale locally developed interventions to a population level. Conclusions: These recommendations aim to facilitate public health intervention co-creation and evaluation utilising participatory methodologies by ensuring the process is systematic and reproducible.

The purpose of this quasi-experimental, longitudinal study was to measure the effects of reflective practice coaching on 35 participants, as compared to participants who did not receive coaching. Data was collected over a period of eight weeks. A secondary purpose was to examine the effects of a standardized case conceptualization training lecture on 84 participants. A third purpose was to examine the relationships between counselor trainee demographic variables, their attitudes towards evidence-based practice, disposition towards reflective reasoning, and competence in writing case conceptualizations. This was the first study to contribute to the reflection in counseling literature. A convenience sample of N = 84 participants participated in two standardized case conceptualization training lectures. An intervention group (N = 35) received an additional three one-on-one reflection coaching sessions. The comparison group (N = 49) received the training lectures and no coaching. Participants from both groups attended two 3-hour training lectures, which taught the integrative case conceptualization model developed by Sperry (2010). Intervention group participants took part in three additional one-on-one reflection coaching sessions. Pre- and post-training lecture case conceptualization skills were assessed using the Case Conceptualization Evaluation Form (CCEF) 2.0. Levels of reflective thinking were measured with pre-, post-, and post-post-administrations of The Reflection in Learning Scale (Sobral, 2005). Variance in case conceptualization competence was analyzed using a MANOVA. Intervention group participants’ mean CCEF 2.0 scores were significantly higher than those of the comparison group (M = 72.64 and M = 46.81, respectively). Reflective thinking was determined not to be a mediating or moderating variable. Dada la importancia de este tema, el instructor pidió a los profesores de inglés en pre- servicio que reflexionaran y examinaran críticamente su propio aprendizaje desde dos puntos de vista diferentes: mi reflexión como aprendiz de un idioma y mi reflexión sobre el aprendizaje. Este ensayo utilizó una serie de preguntas de reflexión abiertas como fuente principal de recopilación de datos y pidió a 20 profesores de inglés en pre- servicio que escribieran un ensayo de reflexión de dos páginas sobre su experiencia personal al aprender inglés. Para el propósito de este ensayo, el análisis de datos se realizó utilizando un enfoque de teoría fundamentada que involucraba la comparación de una parte de datos con otros. Ocho ensayos fueron seleccionados a través de muestreo aleatorio simple. Los resultados muestran los diferentes desafíos y estrategias que los profesores de inglés en pre- servicio han atravesado para aprender el idioma y cómo estas han cambiado a lo largo de los años. El ensayo presenta algunos antecedentes teóricos y desafíos.

Encouraging hospitality students in reflective and transformative learning toward a global mindset becomes an imperative for developing their cross-culturally professional competency in preparation of the future career path development. Oversea exchange programs are among the initiatives to raise personal, professional and cultural awareness for the hospitality students in a pathway to encourage cross-cultural learning among students in similar fields. However, to what extent the development of a global mindset gained from the cross-cultural experiences could help undergraduate hospitality students gain their professional competency in terms of cultural skills in the hospitality and tourism context is the main issue to be described by this study. Content analysis has been conducted on in-depth interview data given by hospitality oversea exchange students who are both current students and graduated ones. The most popular modes of international student exchanges such as team project, assignment, presentations, and travel exchanges are taken into consideration to highlight deeper insights into a mutual interest between the cross-cultural experiences and the professional competency related cultural skills. The study reveals that cultural understanding needs to be experienced in the real setting context. Furthermore, we also discovered that cultural exchange outcomes are normally obtained in the daily informal practices instead of formal studies. However, the current study is constrained within few selected countries where students have been experienced and the current partnership between the home and host Institutions. This paper provides actionable guidelines and approach for integrating the critical component of cultural exchange program in the traditional curriculum program of hospitality.

Entering a new environment is challenging for everyone, including engineers. Despite national efforts to improve graduates' competencies, managers and other critical industry stakeholders consistently describe new hires as underprepared for practice. Nonetheless, as engineers move into their new organizations, they learn to participate in and contribute to their communities of practice. This period is the school-to-work transition, and the goal of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of the salient learning events that characterize individuals' trajectories from engineering student to engineering practitioner. Using a multi-case approach, this study leverages weekly journals and semi-structured interviews to explore the experiences of recent engineering graduates as they enter the workplace and learn to engage in professional practice. Journal entries probed newcomers' perceptions of challenges, accomplishments, and significant learning events during the first 12 weeks of their jobs. Interviews expanded on journal findings and elaborated on participants' experiences. Analysis entailed the development and application of two complementary workplace learning frameworks from Jacobs and Park (2009) and Chao et al. (1994) that describe both the setting and content of salient learning experiences. Cross-case analysis enabled exploration across participants to examine trends and patterns within participants' experiential trajectories. Findings point to several contributions and implications. First, the codebooks developed in this study were contextualized and operationalized for engineering workplaces, and have been refined to enhance descriptive precision and clarity. Second, journals provided thick, rich descriptions of events in ways that hold promise for future exploratory studies as well as formative assessment. This article analyses the sustainability school (SS) program of the National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE), Uganda. The focus is on how the social network, enabled by the SS program, fosters social and transformative learning. The significance of this approach to community-based education for social change, including in the context of resource conflict and displacement, is considered. Findings focus on the local-level impacts of the program, including the ways in which collective and community organizing, and educational methodology shape both social and transformative learning. Discussion considers the importance of not only the “social” element of transformative learning but the need—within conflict and dangerous contexts—to link the social explicitly to building organization and a social movement that provides a structural container for people to engage in critical thinking and social action.

The concept of reflective learning focuses on the idea of analysing the practitioners’ experiences and the way they can learn from them. Considering the higher education, the author decided to describe students’ and academic teacher’s experiences related to learning and communicating through closed groups on Facebook. The three words: FB, they, me are deliberately put together in the title of this article. The experiences were collected to analyse the authors’ own teaching methods and to determine the best learning outcomes by academic teachers and students. The methods of collecting data were mainly based on individual, Internet interviews. As a theoretical concept, the author referred to reflective learning models introduced by (among others) D. A. Schön, T. Borton, D. A. Kolb and G. Gibbs as well as to the theory of transformative learning and Connectivism.

The overall aim with the study was to describe the knowledge building that was developed in a group of students who were trained nurses enrolled in a Swedish higher education programme. With a point of departure in an interactive research approach, the authors applied the dialogue seminar as method and pedagogical model. When the students in close to practice talks, shared their thoughts about how gender and gender equality could be experienced and understood, the dialogue seminar became useable. At the analysis of the stories which the students shared at the dialogue seminars, it became clear that most of the students had an ambivalent approach to gender equality. When they reflected on gender relations, they brought out the hierarchical and separate gender relations which they experienced as existing within healthcare. Furthermore, their professional lives seemed to be embedded in gender-related practices. An important conclusion is that the students’ reflections oscillated between critical reflection on conditions and critical reflection on processes within their own practice in healthcare. Another finding was that the students’ reflections in dialogue form became important in a learning process, not least in the light of that gender relations and gender equality only to a limited degree had been included in their nurse’s education at the basic level.
