Despite the rich diversity of medicinal plants that offer effective treatment options with fewer side effects, studies that provide scientific verification are lacking. Maerua subcordata (Gilg) DeWolf is among the plants claimed to have wide traditional medicine, use, including as a remedy against gastrointestinal problems. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the gut-modulatory effects of a crude leaf extract of M. subcordata (MSL.Cr), as well as its possible mechanism of action.Methods: A castor oil (10 mL/kg)–induced diarrheal mouse model was used to evaluate the antidiarrheal effect of MSL.Cr, and the spasmodic/antispasmodic effect of the extract was assessed using isolated rabbit jejunum with and without addition of standard cholinergic agonists/antagonists to predict the possible mechanism of action.Results: MSL.Cr exhibited 40% and 80% protection against castor oil–induced diarrhea in mice at doses of 500 and 1,000 mg/kg, respectively. In isolated rabbit jejunum, the extract increased spontaneous contractions at low doses (0.01– 0.1 mg/mL), and was sensitive to atropine, whereas it showed complete inhibition at higher doses (0.3– 1 mg/mL). Abstract

The effect of enzyme inhibition, anticancer, antifungal, antioxidants activities of the extracts of Teucrium muscatense obtained with different organic solvents was investigated. Chloroform fraction exhibited promising inhibition (64%) with IC50 value (390 ± 2.0 μg/mL) against urease, while other fractions displayed moderate activity. In case of α-glucosidase and acetyl cholinesterase enzyme inhibition assays, all fractions were found inactive at a concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. The n-hexane fraction of Teucrium muscatense exhibited highest anticancer activity against breast cancer cell (MDAMB231) line at high (100 µg/mL) concentration and also inhibited the growth of F. oxysporum up to 64.3% in case of antifungal activity. EtOAc fraction showed highiest DPPH (70.6%) and ABTS (76.7%) radical scavenging activity at highest concentration (1000 μg/mL). Bioassay guided isolation of EtOAc fraction afforded two flavonoids (1 and 2). Both compounds showed highiest ABTS activity and could be a significant markers in the EtOAc fraction. Anti-lipid peroxidation assay was also performed in which aqueous fraction showed highest percentage of 73.2% at higher concentration (1000 μg/mL) followed by n-BuOH (64.1%) and EtOAc (51.4%) fractions. GC/MS analysis of the essential oil of T. mascatense showed higher percentage of linalool (34.18%), limonene (13.45%), linalyl acetate (10.04%), and β-eudesmol (9.21%). Proximate composition of Teucrium muscatense showed that it contained high amount of ash (19.6%), protein (10.3%), and fiber (17.5%).

Abstract

Date (Phoenix dactylifera L.) seeds (pits) account for ca. 10% of the date fruit and it is the date pits that present a major problem to the date palm industry in the USA as a waste product. Currently date pits are employed as a food source for animals and poultry, as a soil fertilizer and also as a road base gravel In order to understand the varietal effects of Omani date seeds on the nutritional properties of dates and to explore the use of this waste product from the food industry, twenty two native date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera L.) including the varieties; Qushbu Narenjahn, Fardh, Naghal, Manhi, Qush Balquan, Helali Oman, Khasab, Seedi, Qush Jabrin, Khalas, Qush Basrah, Qushbu Maan, Handal, Khunaizi, Qush Mamoor, Barshi, Barni, Azad, Zabad, Qush Tabak, Qush LuLu, and Halali Alhasa were collected from six regions of the Sultanate of Oman and were examined for their nutritional value, antioxidant and urease properties. Energy values, dry matter, and carbohydrate level were the predominant components examined in the date seeds , followed by fiber, moisture, along with small amounts of ash, protein, and fat. The results of the 22 varieties of date seeds showed a significant energy value of between 283.0 to 407.9 kcal/100g, dry matter of between 93.3%-96.3%, carbohydrate content of between 43.8%-80.6%, moisture in the range of 4.3%-6.6%), fat in the range of 5.0%-10.9%, ash content of between 0.73%-1.08%, protein content of 0.2%-6.9% and fiber content of between 5.0%-32.5%. Furthermore the antioxidant potential ranged between 7.4 - 88.3% depending upon the type of date seeds and location of samples. In this regard the Handal date seeds collected from Al-Hamra showed the highest antioxidant potential with 88.3% inhibition. Similarly urease inhibition ranged from 0.94-70.3% and Qush Tabak date seeds collected from Al-Hamra demonstrated the highest urease potential with 70.3% inhibition. Abstract

Enzyme inhibition is one of the most important areas of pharmaceutical research which resulted in the discoveries of several useful drugs. The prime aim of this study is to identify effective natural inhibitors against pharmacologically important enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase enzyme and urease enzyme. In present study, we evaluated the essential oils extracted from medicinally important plants including Boswellia sacra Flückiger (frankincense) and Teucrium mascatense Boiss. Two major constituents of frankincense essential oil including (+)-α-pinene and (R)-+-limonene were also investigated against these enzymes. The essential oils were extracted from Boswellia sacra and Teucrium mascatense which are native plants to the southern and northern areas of Oman, respectively. In this study, the essential oil of frankincense exhibited significant inhibition with IC50 value of 0.043±0.02 mg/mL, against acetylcholinesterase enzyme while against urease enzyme it has shown good inhibition with IC50 value of 0.17 ± 0.05 mg/mL. The essential oil obtained from the Teucrium mascatense was found to be in active against both the enzymes. On acetylcholinesterase enzyme inhibition assay, the (+)-α- pinene exhibited significant inhibition (IC50 = 0.094±0.01 mg/mL) while (R)-+- limonene was found to be inactive on this assay. Against urease enzyme (+)-α- pinene and (R)-+- limonene showed moderate activity 40.06±1.03 % and 19.5±1.00 %, respectively. Interestingly, the mixture of equal concentration of (+)-α- pinene and (R)-+- limonene exhibited 70% inhibition with IC50 value of (0.195 ± 0.10 mg/mL) which shows the synergistic relationship between them. Promising inhibitory potential of frankincense essential oil and (+)-α-pinene, against acetylcholinesterase enzyme and urease enzyme indicated their potential therapeutic role to manage Alzheimer’s disease and stomach ulcers, respectively.

Abstract

The use of frankincense for the medicinal and religious purposes dates back to the early Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Chinese and today, it is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-tumor, sedative and diuretic agent. To prove the scientific basis of the anti-inflammatory properties and the in vitro lipid peroxidation of the Omani Frakincense on pharmacological grounds, the present study was conducted. The crude extract, the essential oils and various sub-fractions of the crude methanolic extract (300 mg/kg of the body weight of the animals) obtained from the resin of Boswellia sacra Flueck. were evaluated for their in vivo anti-inflammatory activities using carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats and in vitro lipid peroxidation by using the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) assay. The tremendous folk use of frankincense as an anti-inflammatory agent was rationalized by our present study of the in vitro TBARS assay and the in vivo anti-inflammatory activities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the anti-inflammatory activity studies which has been conducted thoroughly on the essential oils, the crude extract and the various sub-fractions obtained by using various polarity organic solvents on the resin of the plant Boswellia sacra Flueck.
