Introduction: The International Labor Organization (ILO) considers OSH awareness an essential component of OSH training and education. In addition, virtual reality possesses a unique set of characteristics and components and envisaged that by minimizing the risk of accidents during health and safety training. The aim of the research is to further understand the practicality, user experience and efficacy of virtual reality technology in safety education and training. Method: This paper describes and discusses the VR on occupational safety and health. This paper used the Systematic Literature Review to identified 16 articles that are related to VR on occupational safety and health. Articles are written in English and reviews of scientific journals published in the following internet databases; Scopus, SpringerLink, Web of Science, and Wiley Interscience from 2017 to 2023. Results: The incorporation of Virtual reality (VR) into numerous settings has been demonstrated by research conducted on literature reviews. This review found that VR applications can be used to investigate human behavior in dangerous situations in many settings, VR can also be used to create an innovative learning environment in the high-risk sectors, simulate a realistic physical environment and provide experience to enhance knowledge of workplace safety. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that VR has positive impact on learning about increasing OSH awareness. Conclusion: Several studies have shown that virtual reality is one of the most effective training methods at present. It is believed that the application of VR technology could be used to investigate human behavior in dangerous settings; Additionally, VR can be used to improve HSE employers' understanding of unsafe behavior. The VR improves learning about OSH awareness, risk assessment, and recognizing health concerns.

Background: The number of occupational injuries in manufacturing industries continues to rise despite safety regulations. Occupational injuries range from the spine, hands, head, lungs, eyes, skeleton and skin. Negligence, improper use of Personal Protective Equipment, lack of experience and age are some of the factors leading to occupational injuries. Even though there are measures to prevent these occupational injuries, the number of injuries amongst manufacturing industries keeps rising and the causes need to be identified. Objective(s): The purpose of the study was to develop a training programme for manufacturing industries in the Polokwane municipality. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was used for the study. Five categories of manufacturing industries were visited where 22 participants were interviewed using a voice recorder until data saturation was reached. There were 4 managers, 6 supervisors and 12 general workers. Member checking was done to verify and clarify transcribed information. Field notes were also taken for non-verbal responses. Data were analysed using Tesch’s and Clarke and Braun open coding method following the eight steps. Results: The findings of the study indicated that hazards in the physical work environment of manufacturing industries in the Polokwane municipality contributed to most occupational accidents. It was also found that negligence, incorrect provision of PPE by management, improper use of PPE by workers, and lack of safety training were also contributors to workplace accidents. Commitment to health and safety by industries management was also found to be lacking and played a role in some occupational accidents in the manufacturing industries. Conclusions: The study concludes that lack of health and safety training, negligence, and commitment by those in management compromised the health and safety of workers

Different from mechanical, thermal, or electric stimulation, chemical-induced pain is more close to burning sensations and long-lasting. Douleur consists of a microfluidic platform that precisely emits capsaicin onto the skin and a microneedling component to help the stimulant penetrate the epidermis layer to activate the trigeminal nerve efficiently. Moreover, it embeds a Peltier module to apply the heating or cooling stimulus to the affected area to adjust the level of pain on the skin. To better understand how people would react to the chemical stimulant, we conducted a first study to quantify the enhancement of the sensation by changing the capsaicin concentration, skin temperature, and time and to determine suitable capsaicin concentration levels. In the second study, we demonstrated that Douleur could render a variety of pain sensations in corresponding virtual reality applications. In sum, Douleur is the first wearable prototype that leverages a combination of capsaicin and Peltier to induce rich pain sensations and opens up a wide range of applications for safety education and more. © 2021 ACM.

Being a spectacular atmospheric phenomenon, lightning could induce significant interest in the human mind since the beginning of history. Most often the public perceptions of many communities about lightning were marked by divinity, power, fear and punishment. The belief systems extend up to the present time, despite the development of modern science and technology. In the last two centuries, the scientific understanding of the thunderstorm and lightning phenomena gradually improved and at present we have a significant awareness of the nature of lightning, injury mechanisms and lightning-related medicine. The modern safety guidelines and safety modules for communities in lightning-dense geographical areas are based on proven scientific facts. In several developed countries, a marked decrease in the number of lightning casualties could be observed during the past century, due to the continuous safety awareness programs. [EN] The dramatic growth of the chemical industry in the last century showed its great impact on the development of society but also its danger to humans and the environment, especially by the severe accidents at Seveso or Bhopal. As a result, public concern and perception of the impact and effect of these large installations on the safety of people and their environment led to changes in the chemical industry but also in Chemical Engineering as a discipline and profession. In the last 40 years, safety training has been introduced into the university curriculum of these professionals, especially promoted by accreditation agencies. This paper analyzes the curricular and methodological approach of the introduction of this discipline in the curriculum of Chemical Engineers and illustrates the current situation with the analysis of the curricula in the Spanish universities. Finally, it describes the implementation of this subject with the use of active methodologies in the case of the teaching of ¿Industrial safety¿ for Chemical Engineering degree students at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). Results from assessment performed show benefits of the activities and methodologies developed to improve the level of learning and acquisition of professional competences of the safety-attending students.

Firearm safety education is crucial to the well-being of Utah's children. L.E.T.S. Stay Safe is Utah's firearm safety and violence prevention program that promotes gun safety through education. Formed in partnership with the Utah State Board of Education and the Utah State Legislature, the Utah Attorney General's Office developed this program to help teachers and parents teach firearm safety by providing teaching materials and safety guidelines for students and children across the state. 本研究の目的は,安全教育に繋がる知見を得るため,教育現###場の工作機械を用いた切削加工実習等の場面において,加工時に被削材に発生する熱による温度変化の可視化を試みることである。本研究で使用した工作機械等は,汎用旋盤,高速切断機,直立ボール盤,アセチレン-ガス溶接機(溶断)である。被削材としてSS400 材:一般構造用圧延鋼材,STKM13A 材:機械構造用炭素鋼鋼管を準備した。熱の発生状況の可視化にはサーモグラフィカメラ(FLIR Systems Inc.製)を使用し,ビデオカメラとともに加工時の画###像及び映像を記録した。その結果,本研究の条件下において,旋盤での切削加工時に被削材及び切屑が500℃近くまで上昇することや,溶断作業では1200℃程度で切断された金属材料が,約700℃を下回った段階で目視では常温の状態と同様である等の現象を確認することができた。これらのことから,切削加工時等に発生する火傷の災害対策への有用な知見を得ることができた。The purpose of this study is to visualize temperature change in the###cutting operations. We conducted an experiment with cutting operations###by using an infrared thermo-camera (FLIR Systems Inc.). We used machine tools for the experiment, including a lathe, cutting saws, a drilling machine and a gas welding and cutting machine. We also used “rolled steels for general structure (SS400)" and “carbon steel tubes for machine structural purposes (STKM13A)" as work materials. As the result of this, we found that the surface of work materials rose to 500 degrees Celsius at the time of cutting. On the other hand, we found that the heated materials look the same as materials at normal temperature at 700 degrees under the temperature in the experiment of gas welding and cutting. Therefore, we could obtain useful findings for safety education and training.

Objectives: To identify the most common errors and adverse events and their contributing factors among the older patients admitted to hospital and examine recommendations from an expert review panel for prevention and reduction of the adverse events. Background: Older patients are at an increased risk of errors and adverse events while hospitalized. The increasing evidence suggests that understanding the risks factors that contribute to these errors and adverse events facilitates the education of health professionals and the reduction and preventions of the harm. Method: A retrospective audit of the Incident Information Management System and Root Cause Analysis databases from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2006, was undertaken in 1 large tertiary metropolitan hospital in New South Wales, Australia. Results: Of the 643 incidents identified, falls (n = 309), medication errors (n = 136), and clinical management (n = 104) were the most common errors among older patients, and the failure of clinicians to follow policies and procedures and poor communication between clinicians contributed to these incidents. Conclusions: Although systems are in place for incident reporting and analysis of the contributing factors, improvement depends upon clinicians taking responsibility for anticipating and moderating risk using previous data to identify system weaknesses and monitoring improvements especially in hospitalized older patients.

Πτυχιακή εργασία--Σχολή Επαγγελμάτων Υγείας και Πρόνοιας--Τμήμα Νοσηλευτικής, 2009, αα 1303, Στόχοι της συγκεκριμένης εργασίας είναι να εντοπιστούν οι κίνδυνοι τους οποίους συναντούν τα παιδιά στο πλαίσιο των παιδικών ατυχημάτων, καταγράφοντας τις εκφάνσεις τους, τους παράγοντες έξαρσης του φαινομένου, την επιδημιολογία με καταγραφή στατιστικών στοιχείων, τους τρόπους πρόληψής τους και να καταγραφεί ο ρόλος των γονέων στα παιδικά ατυχήματα. Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο αποδόθηκε καλύτερα το θέμα του ρόλου της οικογένειας σε σχέση με τα παιδικά ατυχήματα, ήταν μέσω της βιβλιογραφικής ανασκόπησης βιβλίων, άρθρων, κειμένων, αποσπασμάτων και ερευνών επιστημονικών εφημερίδων και περιοδικών, καθώς επίσης και βιβλίων γνωστικού αντικειμένου σχετικά με την παιδοψυχολογία, την ιατρική και τη νοσηλευτική. Μελετήθηκαν 60+1 επιστημονικά άρθρα, επιστημονικών περιοδικών μέσω του Διαδικτύου, όπου αναρτώνται οι περιλήψεις τους και τα αποτελέσματά τους. Τα θέματα που θίγονται είναι οι παράγοντες της σχέσης οικογένεια – παιδί – παιδικά ατυχήματα, ο ρόλος του νοσηλευτικού κλάδου, ο ρόλος του γονέα, αλλά και η σχέση γονέα-νοσηλευτικού κλάδου για την επίτευξη της πρόληψης ή νοσηλείας των παιδιών που έχουν βιώσει παιδικό ατύχημα. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν πως το 80% των άρθρων βρίσκουν κοινό παρονομαστή στην εξίσωση των παραγόντων γονέας-νοσηλευτής, δείχνοντας τη ζυγαριά να γέρνει προς το ρόλο του πρώτου που είναι πρωταρχικής και μείζονος σημασίας στην αποκατάσταση του παιδιού από παιδικό ατύχημα, εστιάζοντας έντεχνα και στο ρόλο του δεύτερου, ο οποίος δεν αποτελεί απλά διεκπεραιωτής της επούλωσης των τραυμάτων που προκύπτουν, αλλά είναι ο άνθρωπος κλειδί που θα μπορέσει να διαχειριστεί την κατάσταση και να επιμεληθεί άρτιο κλίμα στην οικογένεια. Problem-based learning is an instructional strategy that emphasises active and experiential learning through problem-solving activity. Using gaming technologies to embed this approach in a three-dimensional (3D) simulation environment provides users with a dynamic, responsive, visually engaging, and cost effective learning experience. Representing real world problems in 3D simulation environments develops knowledge and skills that are applicable to their resolution. The Simulation, User, and Problem-based Learning (SUPL) Design Framework was developed to inform the design of learning environments which develop problem-solving knowledge for real world application. This framework identifies design factors relative to the user, the problem-solving task, and the 3D simulation environment which facilitate the transfer, development, and application of problem-solving knowledge. To assess the validity of the SUPL Design Framework, the Fires in Underground Mines Evacuation Simulator (FUMES) was developed to train mining personnel in emergency evacuation procedures at the Challenger gold mine in South Australia. Two groups of participants representing experienced and novice personnel were utilised to ascertain the effectiveness of FUMES as a training platform in this regard. Findings demonstrated that FUMES accurately represented emergency evacuation scenarios in the Challenger mine. Participants were able to utilise existing real world knowledge in FUMES to resolve emergency evacuation problem-solving tasks and develop new knowledge. The effectiveness of the SUPL Design Framework was also demonstrated, as was the need to design learning environments to meet the learning needs of users rather than merely as static simulations of real world problems. A series of generalisable design guidelines were also established from these findings which could be applied to design problem-based learning simulations in other training contexts.

Recently the frequency of occurrence of natural disaster caused by global warming and ozone layer destruction has increased. South Korea is not an excluded area from natural disasters anymore and small and big sizes of disasters have broken out. However, government and public agencies have only focused on controlling the situation and restoring damages conditions and the disaster mitigation education to minimize damages is significantly insufficient. This study aims to identify the current status and problems of disaster mitigation education and to find out the alternative plans for it. The literature research was employed as the study method based on previous studies related to disaster mitigation education. Currently disaster mitigation education in South Korea has been implemented for citizens, children and youth through school system, civil defense drills, safety learning centers and fire authorities. It was found that the problems of current disaster mitigation education have been caused by the implementation of superficial and theory-focused education and the lacks of contents, time and personnel for education. To solve those problems, alternative plans such as the education focusing on experience, the development of educational contents according to the subjects, and the expansion of specialized personnel and staff to carry out education need to be explored.

This paper presents the results of a systematic review of literature on the topic of parents’ views about child sexual abuse prevention education. It describes: i) what parents know about child sexual abuse prevention education; ii) what child sexual abuse prevention messages parents provide to their children and what topics they discuss; iii) what parents’ attitudes are towards child sexual abuse prevention education in schools; and iv) their preferences for content. Electronic database searches were conducted to identify relevant literature published in English relating to child sexual abuse prevention programs and parent’s views. A total of 429 papers were evaluated with 13 studies identified as meeting the study’s inclusion criteria. Worldwide, empirical research on parents’ views about child sexual abuse prevention programs is limited and more research is needed in Australia. Implications for future research and practice are outlined.

This thesis explores working and learning practices in the context of safety within the Civil Construction Industry (CC Industry) of Western Australia (WA) and specifically focuses on the relations between organisational safety values and current working practices, primarily focusing on the instrumental power of managers in organisations to produce safety. The thesis examines the values in action that permeate the workplace culture and mediate the daily practices of people working in this industry, and ultimately how they impact upon the minds and bodies of employees. The study provides insight into the working practices and discourses within this industry by exploring the space between rhetoric and reality. specifically in terms of managing actions. Patterns in the data illuminate particular relations between values and practices that can mediate improved regimes of occupational, safety and health (OS&H) practices within organisations in the CC Industry. This study was supported by the Civil Contractors Federation WA (CCF) enabling high-level access and reciprocal practical outcomes for the CC Industry.

The Mining and Resource Contractors Safety Training Association (MARCSTA) developed a generic occupational health and safety (OHS) induction program that was first used by the metalliferous mining industry in Western Australia (WA) in 1996. Subsequently the mining industry in Tasmania has adopted the course and it has been on offer in that state since 2000. More than 150 000 trainees have attended the MARCSTA course to date (Gilroy, 2006). An empirical research study analysing data collected from a randomly selected group of 1 600 trainees who attended the course was conducted over a twelve month period. Furthermore historical OHS accident and injury data were analysed for the period prior to and after the introduction of the MARCSTA program.

This study evolved from concerns about the number of young people drowning in New Zealand (544 deaths between 1980-1994), the author’s long experience with surf life saving and the suspicion that participation statistics on aquatic recreation do not adequately explain why so many young people drown. It was postulated that the risk of drowning associated with aquatic recreation also was the consequence of many underlying water safety influences that operate at intrapersonal, interpersonal and community levels. Thus the purpose of the study was to obtain comprehensive data on what young people know, think and do about their safety during aquatic recreation. A 25-item questionnaire was designed to survey a randomised sample of New Zealand youth (2202, year 11, 15 – 19 year olds) to assess their participation in, knowledge about and behaviour during aquatic recreation. To develop the questionnaire, a conceptual framework was devised that constructed the risk of drowning as a complex phenomenon dependent on how often young people participate in various forms of water-based activities, but largely influenced by their water safety knowledge, attitudes and behaviour, all of which are shaped by social, cultural and demographic variables. Almost all New Zealand youth had taken part in some swimming (98%) or other aquatic activity (94%) in the previous year. Risk of drowning was exacerbated among many students because they had poor water safety skills and knowledge, held unsound water safety attitudes, and often practiced at-risk behaviours. For example, many students estimated that they could not swim more than 100 m (54%), thought that swimming was acceptable at a surf beach after patrol hours (61%), and had swum outside patrol flags (61%) or never worn lifejacket (19%) during aquatic recreation. Taken separately, any one of these dispositions is capable of heightening drowning risk; taken collectively they offer strong explanation as to why youth are at greater risk of drow

Access to conventional workshop PD is restricted by obstacles such as time, cost and lack of resources. A flexibly delivered PD program would allow teachers to study when, where and how they prefer. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of a flexibly delivered PD program for teachers in road safety education. The target population was teachers from Western Australian primary schools. A self-completed questionnaire was administered by mail. The instrument addressed factors such as perceived importance of road safety, education needs of students, previous participation in PD and use of road safety education resources. The time, location and what method of delivery preferred by teachers for a flexible learning PD program were also identified. The resources and information that teachers wanted included in a flexibly delivered PD program on road safety education were also determined. Knowledge of how to access an Internet site, location of access to the Internet and the likelihood of teachers in government and non-government schools participating in a flexibly delivered PD program on road safety education were also established. The goal of this research was to determine a model safety and health baccalaureate curriculum. A secondary target was to ascertain if safety and health practitioners and safety and health educators would concur on course offerings. To simplify this study effort, a search of literature was conducted on the Occupational Safety and Health field. There were no in-depth studies of this type for such a general population; therefore no instrument was available for this study. The perusal of literature indicated that most such studies had been conducted using a more specific target group of subjects. That is, faculties or former students of a particular university, one was completed on only certified safety professionals (CSP), or members of the National Safety Managers Society (NSMS) and the like. This study included most geographical areas of the United States of America and thus faculties and former students from many universities. First, it was necessary to determine the competency required for a successful career in Occupational Safety and Health. Second, devise a survey instrument to collect the competency information to function well in his area and essential to the development of a curricula questionnaire. Directories used to select expert subjects to serve as judges for this research included the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), National Safety Council, Business and Industry Division (NSC/B&I), and the World Safety Organisation (WSO). Since the Delphi technique was being used, a pilot study was employed to collect information from a selected group of practitioners and educators. This information served as the basis for creating a survey instrument that was mailed to 489 health and safety practitioners and educators. A total of 355 or 72 per cent of the surveys were returned. The National Transportation Safety Conference held in Washington, D.C., on March 2-3, 1999, had at least two significant outcomes. The first was the beginning of a transportation safety action plan based on the participants' suggestions about specific strategies to save lives and reduce injuries. The second was a memorandum of understanding in which Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Stacher, and the chiefs of industry, trade, labor, and law enforcement organizations pledged to work as partners to provide safe work environments, advocate safety in their organizations, provide safety education to employees, make safety a priority in organizational activities, and be partners in the National Transportation Safety Action Plan. In addition, the Department of Transportation agreed to assist in the development of educational programs and materials on transportation safety. Key initiatives that will be part of the comprehensive effort to improve safety in all modes of transportation include initiatives on child safety, aviation safety, maritime safety, truck safety, safety among underserved communities, improved information for public safety policy, and safety for aging adults.

Child sexual abuse has increasingly been recognised as a multi-faceted social problem. So far efforts to deal with this problem have mainly focussed on helping children recognise sexual abuse and teaching them skills to avert or stop sexual misbehaviour. Child sexual abuse prevention programmes are most frequently presented through schools because this approach provides easy access to children over an extended period of time. The Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme (KOS) is a prevention programme that has been specifically designed for use with New Zealand children. Empirical studies have shown that the degree to which children are able to benefit from participation in prevention programmes such as KOS, is influenced by the manner in which prevention concepts are presented and by children's cognitive and affective levels of development. So far it is not clear how children of different ages integrate prevention concepts. The aim of the present study was to explore children's perceptions and interpretations of the safety concepts presented to them through the KOS programme by combining both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Ninety-six children completed the Child Knowledge of Abuse Questionnaire - Revised II (CKAQ-RII). In addition twelve of them were recruited to take part in an in depth follow-up interview. Results support previous findings indicating that children's knowledge of factors surrounding sexual abuse increase with age. Furthermore, children have more difficulty incorporating an understanding of concepts surrounding sexual abuse than developing preventive skills. Formulations that posed problems included the ability to recognise inappropriate behaviour in adults, the concept of 'strangers' and the notion that a person known to the child might try to abuse them. The majority of students were able to use preventive strategies such as 'saying no' and 'telling a person you trust' appropriately in 'what if' problem solving exercises. Results suggest tha
