Samenvatting Achtergrond: Het doel van dit onderzoek was om de mate van gedragsproblemen bij kinderen en adolescenten met cerebrale parese (CP) in kaart te brengen, in het algemeen en naar gelang leeftijd, sekse, ernst van CP en schooltype. Daarnaast is de relatie tussen gedragsproblemen en sociaal functioneren onderzocht. Dit is tot op heden weinig onderzocht en onderzoeksresultaten zijn tegenstrijdig. Methode: 158 participanten zijn geïncludeerd (100 jongens, 58 meisjes; M = 8.50 jaar, SD = 2.68). Externaliserende- en internaliserende gedragsproblemen zijn gemeten met de Child Behavior Checklist en sociaal functioneren met de Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory. De mate van gedragsproblemen naar gelang verschillende factoren is geanalyseerd met een onafhankelijke T-Test of analyse of variance en de relatie tussen gedragsproblemen en sociaal functioneren met een lineaire regressie analyse. Resultaten: 15.2% van de participanten vertoonde externaliserende- en 18.4% internaliserende gedragsproblemen. De mate van externaliserende gedragsproblemen verschilde significant naar gelang leeftijd (p = .016), sekse (p = .04) en schooltype (p < .001). This study explores the key advantages and problems of heterogeneous PBL groups from the students' and teachers' opinions. Focus groups were conducted with a stratified sample of second year medical students and their PBL teachers. We found that students working in heterogeneous groupings interact with students with whom they don't normally interact with, learn a lot more from each other because of their differences in language and academic preparedness and become better prepared for their future professions in multicultural societies. On the other hand we found students segregating in the tutorials along racial lines and that status factors disempowered students and subsequently their productivity. Among the challenges was also that academic and language diversity hindered student learning. In light of these the recommendations were that teachers need special diversity training to deal with heterogeneous groups and the tensions that arise. Attention should be given to create 'the right mix' for group learning in diverse student populations. The findings demonstrate that collaborative heterogeneous learning has two sides that need to be balanced. On the positive end we have the 'ideology' behind mixing diverse students and on the negative the 'practice' behind mixing students. More research is needed to explore these variations and their efficacy in more detail.

The Waikato North Head operation in New Zealand employs a bucket wheel excavator/shiftable conveyor mining system to excavate titanomagnetite-bearing sand and clay. Titanomagnetite concentrate is used for ironmaking by direct reduction. The design and specifications of the mining equipment are described, which includes two bucket wheel excavators and two beltwagons with two shiftable bench conveyors and two trunk conveyors to deliver material to the processing plant. The original system was commissioned in 1984 as a high-capacity, low-cost excavation method. A second beltwagon was installed in 1996, increasing the flexibility of the mining system. The concentration plant has minimal surge stockpile capacity. Feed from the mining system is delivered via the trunk conveyors to a stacker onto a 10 000 t live capacity conical stockpile. The sand is withdrawn from the stockpile through three buried feeders which deliver material onto a reclaim conveyor. The system supplies the processing plant at rates of 600-2 000 t/h depending on feed grade. The raw feed is mixed with water and passed through one of two trommels and the undersize delivered to a slurry bin for pumping into the process plant. The first concentration stage is magnetic recovery using double-drum magnetic separators. The magnetic concentrate is processed through a scrubber to liberate clay slimes and then dewatered by cyclones before being passed over vibratory screens. The undersize is then transferred to a gravity separation stage consisting of cone concentrators and spirals. Tailings from the cones are passed over the spirals in a scavenger stage. Concentrate from the cones and spirals passes through the final magnetic separation stage. Tailings rejected from the magnetic and gravity circuits and the oversize from the vibratory screens are pumped as a high-density slurry to the tailings areas where they are stacked to a profile suitable for rehabilitation. The Waikato North Head mine in New Zealand is situated at the mouth of the Waikato River and supplies about 1 200 000 tpa of titanomagnetite concentrate to the Glenbrook steel mill. The mine draws fresh water supply from the Waikato River, abstracting about 38 000 m3 per day. During the concentration of the iron sand, slimes are liberated into the plant wastewater. The plant wastewater, storm water and groundwater from the mining operation is treated and passed through settling ponds. Around 118 400 m3 per day of water are drawn from the recycle settling ponds for use in the concentration plant. A daily average of up to 15 100 m3 of the treated water is typically discharged back to the Waikato River. Since the early 1990s significant improvements have been made to the water treatment and the mine discharge water quality is regularly similar or better than background river water quality. Around 1995 improvements were made to the recycle ponds. Reeds that were gradually expanding on the pond margins were removed. The decant between the B and C ponds was replaced with a concrete weir so that only clean surface water was flowing into the C Pond. This also increased the residence time in the ponds. In late 1996 a Magnafloc 368 polymer dosing system was installed to replace the slag addition and in 1998 more regular Magnafloc 368 dosing was initiated, particularly when mining occurred in areas of high clay levels or peat which was difficult to settle out in the recycle ponds. From mid-2000 the Magnafloc 368 dosing system was automated for continuous operation during the production week. In March 2001, major modifications were made to the concentration plant drains to ensure all excess process water was directed to the recycle ponds. The mine water circuit is monitored daily during the production week to ensure that discharge water quality is maintained and to adjust the water treatment chemical dosing if required. In the study reported here, two methods, one new and one a modified version of a previously used method, were employed for the evaluation of platelet compatibility. Platelet compatibility tests were performed on fresh, liquid-stored and washed previously frozen platelets. The immunofluorescent techniques of platelet antibody identification used in this study have been described previously. The Coulter fluorescence activated cell sorter was used to measure allonatibodies and platelet specific antibodies (anti-PLA). The Coulter Counter H4 channelyzer was used to measure mean platelet volume (MPV). Treatment of normal donor platelets with patient sera containing alloantibodies produced an increase in MPV, unlike treatment of the same donor platelets with autologous serum. An increase in MPV also was seen after treatment of blood group A platelets with serum from blood group O donors, but none was seen after treatment with other mismatched ABO groups.
