All enrolled KPREE patients were followed up for at least 1 month to observe their clinical characteristics, unfavorable prognosis, and risk factors, and were compared with intraocular surgery-related postoperative endophthalmitis (ISRPE).Results: Finally, a total of 15 eyes (3 both eyes) from 12 patients were enrolled in KPREE group, and 11 eyes (none both eyes) from 11 patients were enrolled in ISRPE group. Compared to the ISRPE group, the KPREE group had a higher percentage of fever (100% vs 9.09%, P = 0.000), liver abscess (91.67% vs 0%, P = 0.000), lung involvement (50.00% vs 0%, P = 0.024), and lower plasma albumin levels (24.1 [17.8, 31.7] vs 44.0 [37.7, 48.4], P = 0.001). Furthermore, Pearson’s partial correlation analysis showed that fever (adjusted r = 0.592, adjusted P = 0.026) and plasma albumin (adjusted r = − 0.658, adjusted P = 0.011) were independent factors associated with KPREE. While it is crucial to monitor the spatio-temporal dynamics of forests at the subpixel scale, most available nonlinear methods are used to predict forest cover fraction maps only at the acquisition time of the training samples and are, thus, unable to estimate time-series forest cover fraction beyond the acquisition time. Based on MODIS NDVI, VCF and Landsat tree canopy height data, we developed a spatio-temporal regression (STR) method to estimate annual forest cover fraction maps during 2000–2020 on China's Han River Basin. Results obtained by the proposed STR method achieved significantly higher accuracy (R 2 = 0.897, RMSE = 0.1364, MAE = 0.077) than that obtained by a traditional nonlinear regression method. Moreover, the STR exhibits increased accuracy when using training samples from both 2000 and 2020 compared to those using training samples solely from either 2000 or 2020. We also introduced Landsat tree cover maps in 2005, 2010, and 2015 as reference data to verify the effectiveness of the STR method. The STR method was employed to produce annual forest cover fraction maps from 2000 to 2020. The outcomes revealed a distinct overall recovery trend of forest cover at both the pixel and subpixel scales in China's Han River Basin during 2000–2020, notably around the vicinity of the Danjiangkou reservoir area. In general, the STR method proposed in this research is superior in accurately tracking time-series high-intensity and low-intensity forest cover fraction changes in a complex forest ecosystem, which is composed of various forest types in a subtropical monsoon climate.

Background Infertility is a growing global health concern affecting millions of couples worldwide. Among several factors, an extreme body weight adversely affects reproductive functions. Leptin is a well-known adipokine that serves as an endocrine signal between adiposity and fertility. However, the exact mechanisms underlying the effects of high leptin level on female reproduction remain unclear. Methods Transgenic pigs overexpressing leptin (♀) were produced by backcrossing and screened for leptin overexpression. The growth curve, fat deposition, reproductive performance, apoptosis, serum hormones and cholesterol production, RNA sequencing, and single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) of the leptin-overexpressing pigs and wild-type group were evaluated. Results Transgenic pigs overexpressing leptin (♀) were obtained, which exhibited significantly reduced body weight, body size, and back fat thickness. These pigs manifested a late onset of puberty (330 ±54.3 vs. 155 ±14.7 days), irregular estrous behavior characterized by increased inter-estrous interval (29.2 ±0 vs. 21.3 ±0.7 days), and more number of matings until pregnancy (at least 3 times).This reproductive impairment in leptin pigs was related to hormonal imbalances characterized by increased levels of FSH, LH, prolactin, E2, P4, and TSH, altered steroidogenesis such as increased levels of serum cholesterol esters along with steroidogenic markers (StAR, CYP19A), and ovarian dysfunctions manifested by neutrophilic infiltration and low expression of caspase-3 positive cells in the ovaries. Moreover, bulk RNA sequencing of the ovaries also revealed neutrophilic infiltration followed by upregulation of inflammation-related genes. Furthermore, snRNA-seq reflected that leptin overexpression triggered immune response, suppressed follicle development and luteinization, resulting in metabolic dysfunction and hormone imbalance in the ovary. Digital PCR (dPCR) holds immense potential for precisely detecting nucleic acid markers essential for personalized medicine. However, its broader application is hindered by high consumable costs, complex procedures, and restricted multiplexing capabilities. To address these challenges, an all-in-one dPCR system is introduced that eliminates the need for microfabricated chips, offering fully automated operations and enhanced multiplexing capabilities. Using this innovative oscillation-induced droplet generation technique, OsciDrop, this system supports a comprehensive dPCR workflow, including precise liquid handling, pipette-based droplet printing, in situ thermocycling, multicolor fluorescence imaging, and machine learning-driven analysis. The system's reliability is demonstrated by quantifying reference materials and evaluating HER2 copy number variation in breast cancer. Its multiplexing capability is showcased with a quadruplex dPCR assay that detects key EGFR mutations, including 19Del, L858R, and T790M in lung cancer. Moreover, the digital stepwise melting analysis (dSMA) technique is introduced, enabling high-multiplex profiling of seven major EGFR variants spanning 35 subtypes. This innovative dPCR system presents a cost-effective and versatile alternative, overcoming existing limitations and paving the way for transformative advances in precision diagnostics.

Timely and large-area monitoring of terrestrial water bodies using remote sensing data is essential to protect water resource security for humans and ecosystems. Although efforts have been made to monitor inter-monthly water bodies at the regional, continental and global scales, surface open water bodies may experience rapid changes within a short duration. At the same time, the data gaps caused by the long revisit frequencies of satellite sensor imaging systems and the extremely cloudy and rainy weather in certain areas mean that a suitable operational method for recording such rapid changes over large areas does not yet exist. The recently launched operational geostationary satellite sensor GOES-16 ABI can provide multi-scale optical images every 10 min in the Americas, and it has great potential to provide a new solution for timely open surface water monitoring. In this research, a framework based on a multi-scale non-linear mixture model (NLMM) was proposed for the automatic estimation of 500 m daily open water body fraction maps across the full extent of the American continent from GOES-16 ABI imagery. Specifically, an exterior spectral library was created firstly from many pairs of training GOES-16 ABI images and 500 m water body fraction maps derived from Landsat images, and an inherited interior pure spectral library was then derived from a pair of the testing GOES-16 ABI image and the corresponding pure water and non-water (i.e., vegetation and soil/rock substrate) fractions extracted from the monthly water recurrence dataset. Furthermore, a synthetic interior mixed spectral library was built finally based on the linear and non-linear mixtures of randomly selected pure endmembers of water and non-water (i.e., vegetation and soil/rock substrate) in the testing image. Aims Previous studies have shown that silicon (Si) can affect plant growth and yield by regulating the availability of other nutrients. However, the mechanisms by which Si affects plant biomass accumulation in coastal wetlands are not well explored. Methods We conducted a sampling campaign across the whole growing season of Phragmites australis under waterlogging and drought conditions in coastal wetland, and quantified the effects of Si availability on biomass accumulation. Results Compared with drought condition, the waterlogged condition improved the utilization efficiency of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) of P. australis regulated by higher Si contents. Meanwhile, the increased Si contents promoted the utilization of N and P in leaf, suggesting that the increase in Si contents optimizes the photosynthetic process. Lignin contents in P. australis decreased with the increasing Si contents, which confirmed that Si can replace structural carbon components. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) showed aboveground biomass accumulation of P. australis was synchronized with Si accumulation, indicating that Si was a beneficial element to promote biomass accumulation. Conclusions Our study implies that increasing Si availability is conducive to biomass accumulation of P. australis in waterlogged wetlands, which will provide important scientific references for the management of coastal wetland ecosystem and the increase of global 'blue carbon' sequestration.

Gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductor wires have emerged as potent candidates for nonlinear optical devices, necessitating bandgap engineering for an expanded operational wavelength range. We report the successful growth of strain-mediated GaAs microwires (MWs) with an average diameter of 1.1 mu m. The axial tensile strain in these wires, as measured by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering, ranges from 1.61 % to 1.95 % and from 1.44 % to 2.03 %, respectively. This strain condition significantly reduces the bandgap of GaAs MWs compared to bulk GaAs, enabling a response wavelength extension up to 1.1 mu m. Open aperture Z-scan measurements reveal a nonlinear absorption coefficient of -15.9 cm/MW and a third-order magnetic susceptibility of -2.8 x 10(-8) esu at 800 nm for these MWs. I-scan measurements further show that the GaAs saturable absorber has a modulation depth of 7.9 % and a nonsaturation loss of 3.3 % at 1050 nm. In laser applications, GaAs MWs have been effectively used as saturable absorbers for achieving Q-switched and dual-wavelength synchronous mode-locking operations in Yb-bulk lasers. These results not only offer new insights into the use of large diameter semiconductor wires but also expand the potential for applications requiring bandgap tuning.

The CIRCLES project aims to reduce instabilities in traffic flow, which are naturally occurring phenomena due to human driving behavior. These "phantom jams" or "stop-and-go waves,"are a significant source of wasted energy. Toward this goal, the CIRCLES project designed a control system referred to as the MegaController by the CIRCLES team, that could be deployed in real traffic. Our field experiment leveraged a heterogeneous fleet of 100 longitudinally-controlled vehicles as Lagrangian traffic actuators, each of which ran a controller with the architecture described in this paper. The MegaController is a hierarchical control architecture, which consists of two main layers. The upper layer is called Speed Planner, and is a centralized optimal control algorithm. It assigns speed targets to the vehicles, conveyed through the LTE cellular network. The lower layer is a control layer, running on each vehicle. It performs local actuation by overriding the stock adaptive cruise controller, using the stock on-board sensors. The Speed Planner ingests live data feeds provided by third parties, as well as data from our own control vehicles, and uses both to perform the speed assignment. The architecture of the speed planner allows for modular use of standard control techniques, such as optimal control, model predictive control, kernel methods and others, including Deep RL, model predictive control and explicit controllers. Depending on the vehicle architecture, all onboard sensing data can be accessed by the local controllers, or only some. Control inputs vary across different automakers, with inputs ranging from torque or acceleration requests for some cars, and electronic selection of ACC set points in others. The proposed architecture allows for the combination of all possible settings proposed above. Most configurations were tested throughout the ramp up to the MegaVandertest.

Vision-based localization is a cost-effective and thus attractive solution for many intelligent mobile platforms. However, its accuracy and especially robustness still suffer from low illumination conditions, illumination changes, and aggressive motion. Event-based cameras are bio-inspired visual sensors that perform well in HDR conditions and have high temporal resolution, and thus provide an interesting alternative in such challenging scenarios. While purely event-based solutions currently do not yet produce satisfying mapping results, the present work demonstrates the feasibility of purely event-based tracking if an alternative sensor is permitted for mapping. The method relies on geometric 3D-2D registration of semi-dense maps and events, and achieves highly reliable and accurate cross-modal tracking results. Practically relevant scenarios are given by depth camera-supported tracking or map-based localization with a semi-dense map prior created by a regular image-based visual SLAM or structure-from-motion system. Conventional edge-based 3D-2D alignment is extended by a novel polarity-aware registration that makes use of signed time-surface maps (STSM) obtained from event streams. We furthermore introduce a novel culling strategy for occluded points. Both modifications increase the speed of the tracker and its robustness against occlusions or large view-point variations. This work describes the use of on-board vehicle data from cars with advanced driver assistance features as a trip summary, with the goal of helping drivers contextualize their driving habits in terms of sustainability. The approach is similar to recent advancements in fitness tracking apps, which leverage smartwatches and other wearable devices to characterize activities during a workout or as part of daily fitness monitoring. Instead of adding new vehicle sensors, the data used for this work is from on-board driving data, namely, signals decoded from the vehicle's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. With the deepening research of automatic driving technologies, Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) have gradually entered the consumer field, and more users are benefiting from the convenience and safety assistance provided by driving assistance and autonomous driving. However, various technical obstacles persist due to the complex environment, the non-communication of technologies, and users' trust. We propose indicators for evaluating the key characteristics of each drive, to facilitate drivers' familiarity with advanced driver assistance systems and to allow them to consider how different driving styles affect sustainability metrics. Understanding the relationship between agroforest age and soil water dynamics is crucial for effective land and water resources management. However, the complexities of these dynamics, such as soil water recharge and depletion, hamper in-depth understanding, particularly in water-scarce regions. In this study, we examined soil water recharge and depletion in relation to the stand age of apple trees, a widely planted and representative deep-rooted agroforest, over four years in a semi-arid region on China’s Loess Plateau (CLP). We collected soil cores to >20 m depth from four apple orchards (referred to as ‘agroforests’) with variable stand ages (established in 2008, 2005, 1998, and 1994). For comparison, we selected adjacent cropland as land use prior to agroforestry practices (‘control’). We measured soil water content and tritium distributions to model soil water dynamics and estimate water ages across different soil profiles. Our results show that recharge amounts (and depths) in shallow soils were 298.4 mm (7 m), 303.4 mm (6.6 m), 300.6 mm (5.4 m), and 483.1 mm (7.6 m), whereas deep soils had net depletions of 111.1 mm, 391.9 mm, 192.8 mm, and 108.9 mm for AP2008, AP2005, AP1998, and AP1994, respectively. The tritium peak depths, which indicate the 1963 bomb peak depth, significantly differed between agroforested and non-agroforested plots. In particular, agroforestation reduced the seepage velocity of soil water over 20 years. Furthermore, our tritium tracer water age model suggests that the age of transpired deep soil water exceeded 200 years in the oldest orchard. These findings highlight a complex interaction between newly infiltrated water and existing water, possibly due to variations in soil pore size distributions. The results of this study offer valuable insights into the ecohydrological impacts of agroforestation on the CLP and in similar climatic regions.

Troxerutin offers protection against radiation; however, its underlying mechanism remains largely undetermined.Methods: We established a model of RILI in mice pretreated with troxerutin. The lung tissue was extracted for RNA sequencing, and an RNA library was constructed. Next, we estimated the target miRNAs of differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs, and the target mRNAs of DE miRNAs. Then, functional annotations of these target mRNAs were performed using GO and KEGG.Results: Compared to the control group, 150 lncRNA, 43 miRNA, and 184 mRNA were significantly up-regulated, whereas, 189 lncRNA, 15 miRNA, and 146 mRNA were markedly down-regulated following troxerutin pretreatment. Our results revealed that the Wnt, cAMP, and tumor-related signaling pathways played an essential role in RILI prevention via troxerutin using lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network.Conclusion: These evidences revealed that the abnormal regulation of RNA potentially leads to pulmonary fibrosis. Patients diagnosed with CKD stage 3 or 4 (International Classification of Diseases diagnosis code or estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] < 60 mL/min) between January 2011 and March 2018 were included and followed until progression to the next CKD stage, death, or dropout. The primary objective of this study was to assess the relationship between blood eosinophil counts (bEOS) and CKD progression, adjusting for clinical and demographic features as well as known risk factors for CKD stages 3– 4. Background Efferocytosis is a process that removes apoptotic cells and cellular debris. Clearance of these cells alleviates neuroinflammation, prevents the release of inflammatory molecules, and promotes the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines to help maintain tissue homeostasis. The underlying mechanisms by which this occurs in the brain after injury remain ill-defined. Methods We used GFP bone marrow chimeric knockout (KO) mice to demonstrate that the axon guidance molecule EphA4 receptor tyrosine kinase is involved in suppressing MERTK in the brain to restrict efferocytosis of resident microglia and peripheral-derived monocyte/macrophages. Results Single-cell RNAseq identified MERTK expression, the primary receptor involved in efferocytosis, on monocytes, microglia, and a subset of astrocytes in the damaged cortex following brain injury. Loss of EphA4 on infiltrating GFP-expressing immune cells improved functional outcome concomitant with enhanced efferocytosis and overall protein expression of p-MERTK, p-ERK, and p-Stat6. The percentage of GFP+ monocyte/macrophages and resident microglia engulfing NeuN+ or TUNEL+ cells was significantly higher in KO chimeric mice. Importantly, mRNA expression of Mertk and its cognate ligand Gas6 was significantly elevated in these mice compared to the wild-type. Analysis of cell-specific expression showed that p-ERK and p-Stat6 co-localized with MERTK-expressing GFP + cells in the peri-lesional area of the cortex following brain injury. The satisfaction of nurses in the ward, hand-over items and warehouse inventory time, ICU rescue efficiency, and the incidence of nursing adverse events before and after the implementation of the mode were compared.Results: Implementation of the visual and “ 6S” management mode led to significantly higher satisfaction of nurses in the ward compared to pre-implementation. Further, a significant decrease was observed in hand-over items and warehouse inventory time, ICU rescue efficiency, and the incidence of adverse nursing events (P< 0.05).Conclusion: The visual and “ 6S” management mode in the ward could significantly improve the quality of clinical nursing management and the satisfaction of medical staffs. This study is a single-centre prospective study, so some selection bias is inevitable. Titanium (Ti) ion can stimulate osteoblast apoptosis and therefore have a high potential to play a negative role in the aseptic loosening of implants. Mitochondrial abnormalities are closely related to osteoblast dysfunction. However, the mitochondrial molecular mechanism of Ti ion induced osteoblastic cell apoptosis is still unclear. This study investigated in vitro mitochondrial oxidative stress (mtROS) mediated mitochondrial dysfunction involved in Ti ion-induced apoptosis of murine MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells. In addition to reducing mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and decreasing adenosine triglyceride production, exposure to Ti ions increased mitochondrial oxidative stress. Moreover, mitochondrial abnormalities significantly contributed to Ti ion induction of osteoblastic cellular apoptosis. A mitochondria-specific antioxidant, mitoquinone (MitoQ), alleviated Ti ion-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis in osteoblastic cells, indicating that Ti ion mainly induces mitochondrial oxidative stress to produce a cytotoxic effect on osteoblasts. Here we show that the primary regulator of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), cyclophilin D (CypD), is involved in mitochondrial dysfunction and osteoblast cell apoptosis induced by Ti ion. Overexpression of CypD exacerbates osteoblast apoptosis and impairs osteogenic function. Moreover, detrimental effects of CypD were rescued by cyclosporin A (CsA), an inhibitor of CypD, which shows its protective effect on mitochondrial and osteogenic osteoblast functions. Based on new insights into the mitochondrial mechanisms underlying Ti ion-induced apoptosis of osteoblastic cells, the findings of this study lay the foundation for the clinical use of CypD inhibitors to prevent or treat implant failure.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) emphasizes that using real building energy use data (RBEUD) to reflect the actual condition of buildings and inform policy-making is the most effective way to reduce buildings’ carbon emissions. However, based on IEA’s evaluation, regional and national building stock data are limited and lacking. Especially for China, the lack of RBEUD in buildings has limited our ability to address the energy performance gap (EPG). In this research, EPG refers to the difference between regulated energy consumption by design standards and actual energy usage. EPG makes it difficult to develop buildings that are energy-efficient. Therefore, this study aims to gather and analyze RBEUD in order to understand the role of occupants’ behavior in explaining the EPG of energy-efficient residential buildings in China. The results suggest that the actual consumption of residential buildings is less than 1/5–1/3 of the theoretical limits. The heat pump and air conditioner’s actual schedules and setpoint settings are the significant drivers that explain the EPG. In addition, the presentation of a database of 1128 households provides actual usage behavior parameters for policy-makers to improve the accuracy of building energy forecasting models., Design & Construction Management

Photothermal phenomenon is one of the natural responses in light-matter interactions in which the energy of the incident light is converted into heat, resulting in a temperature increase in the illuminated material. This effect has a direct influence on the refractive index of the material such that its change of spectral dependency with temperature can be exploited for different applications. However, it is also important to separate/identify the thermal effect from the optical/electronic resonance effect to expand potential applications of light-matter interactions. In this work, we demonstrate the use of a white-light interferometry approach combined with a windowed Fourier transform method and a consistency-checking peak-fitting method to obtain the refractive index of an Rh6G-ethanol dye solution with a sensitivity of about ∼10-6 (RIU) for the visible range. Moreover, we also perform both static and dynamic measurements to study the photothermal effect of the Rh6G solution under external excitation. Importantly, we separate the optical and thermal effects due to the external excitation and obtain very good agreement with the experimental results by modeling the relative refractive index of the Rh6G solution with an expression consisting of spectrally a Fano-like resonance term and a linear dependent thermal term. We find that the response due to the optical effect is about ∼0.2 × 10-3 of that due to the thermal effect in the low-light regime. Our approach to separating the optical and thermal effects could shed light on other fields for potential applications through precision measurements of the transmission phase or refractive index. © 2023 Optica Publishing Group.

Various nanophotonic devices based on semiconductor wires with a diameter of several ten nanometers have been studied. Nevertheless, studying the optoelectronics properties and performance of such devices based on large-diameter wires is interesting and meaningful. Here, we successfully grew the micronsized indium antimonide (InSb) wires, and examined their nonlinear optical properties by Z-scan and I-scan (power-dependent) methods within the wavelength range of 0.8-2.8 mu m. Furthermore, we demonstrated InSb microwires (MWs) working as an effective and robust optical switch within 1-2.8 mu m wavelength. The findings can open possibilities for research on more large-diameter MWs made from other semiconductor materials for photonic and electronic devices.

Aims The natural abundances of stable carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotopes (delta C-13 and delta N-15) are extensively used to indicate the C and N biogeochemical cycles at large spatial scales. However, the spatial patterns of delta C-13 and delta N-15 in plant-soil systems of grasslands in northern China and their main driving factors across regional climatic gradient are still not well understood. Methods We measured plant and soil delta C-13 and delta N-15 compositions as well as their associated environmental factors across 2000 km climatic gradient (-0.2 to 9 degrees C; 152 to 502 mm) in grasslands of northern China. Results The soil delta C-13 and delta N-15 values in surface were lower than those in bottom for temperate typical steppe but had no significant differences for temperate meadow steppe and temperate desert steppe. Soil delta C-13 values declined with increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) but increased as mean annual temperature (MAT). These changes were attributed to the microbial decomposition rate. The delta N-15 values in soil and plant were negatively correlated with MAT and mean annual precipitation (MAP), which were mainly related to the low soil organic matter mineralization rate and the shift of dominant species from C-4 to C-3. Conclusions Our results indicate the spatial patterns and different influencing factors on delta C-13 and delta N-15 values along the climatic gradient in grasslands of northern China. The findings will provide scientific references for future research on the C and N biogeochemical cycles of temperate grasslands.

Many decision-making scenarios in modern life benefit from the decision support of artificial intelligence algorithms, which focus on a data-driven philosophy and automated programs or systems. However, crucial decision issues related to security, fairness, and privacy should consider more human knowledge and principles to supervise such AI algorithms to reach more proper solutions and to benefit society more effectively. In this work, we extract knowledge-based logic that defines risky driving formats learned from public transportation accident datasets, which haven't been analyzed in detail to the best of our knowledge. More importantly, this knowledge is critical for recognizing traffic hazards and could supervise and improve AI models in safety-critical systems. Then we use automated verification methods to verify the robustness of such logic. More specifically, we gather 72 accident datasets from Data.gov and organize them by state. Further, we train Decision Tree and XGBoost models on each state's dataset, deriving accident judgment logic. Finally, we deploy robustness verification on these tree-based models under multiple parameter combinations.

BACKGROUND: Studies of sex differences in the use and outcomes of endovascular treatment (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke report inconsistent results. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed and Embase databases for studies examining sex-specific utilization of EVT for acute ischemic stroke published before 31 December 2021. Estimates were compared by study type: randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs (hospital-based, registry-based or administrative data). Random effects odds ratios (ORs) were generated to quantify sex differences in EVT use. To estimate sex differences in functional outcome on the modified Rankin scale after EVT, the female:male ratio of ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained from ordinal or binary analysis. RESULTS: 6,396 studies were identified through database searching, of which 594 qualified for a full review. A total of 51 studies (36 non-RCT and 15 RCTs) reporting on sex-specific utilization of EVT were included, and of those 10 estimated the sex differences of EVT on functional outcomes. EVT use was similar in women and men both in non-RCTs (OR: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.96-1.11) and RCTs (1.02, 95% CI: 0.89-1.16), with consistent results across years of publication and regions of study, except that in Europe EVT treatment was higher in women than men (1.15, 95% CI: 1.13-1.16). No sex differences were found in the functional outcome by either ordinal and binary analyses (ORs 0.95, 95% CI: 0.68-1.32] and 0.90, 95% CI: 0.65-1.25, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: No sex differences in EVT utilization or on functional outcomes were evident after acute ischemic stroke from large-vessel occlusion. Further research may be required to examine sex differences in long-term outcomes, social domains, and quality of life. Circulating monocytes have emerged as key regulators of the neuroinflammatory milieu in a number of neuropathological disorders. Ephrin type A receptor 4 (Epha4) receptor tyrosine kinase, a prominent axon guidance molecule, has recently been implicated in the regulation of neuroinflammation. Using a mouse model of brain injury and a GFP BM chimeric approach, we found neuroprotection and a lack of significant motor deficits marked by reduced monocyte/macrophage cortical infiltration and an increased number of arginase-1(+) cells in the absence of BM-derived Epha4. This was accompanied by a shift in monocyte gene profile from pro- to antiinflammatory that included increased Tek (Tie2 receptor) expression. Inhibition of Tie2 attenuated enhanced expression of M2-like genes in cultured Epha4-null monocytes/macrophages. In Epha4-BM-deficient mice, cortical-isolated GFP(+) monocytes/macrophages displayed a phenotypic shift from a classical to an intermediate subtype, which displayed reduced Ly6c(hi) concomitant with increased Ly6c(lo)- and Tie2-expressing populations. Furthermore, clodronate liposome-mediated monocyte depletion mimicked these effects in WT mice but resulted in attenuation of phenotype in Epha4-BM-deficient mice. This demonstrates that monocyte polarization not overall recruitment dictates neural tissue damage. Thus, coordination of monocyte proinflammatory phenotypic state by Epha4 is a key regulatory step mediating brain injury.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs), as promising alternatives to Pt-based catalysts, suffer from the limited choice of center metals and low single-atom loading. Here, we report a pentacoordinated Zr-based SAC with nontrivial axial O ligands (denoted O−Zr−N−C) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The O ligand downshifts the d-band center of Zr and confers Zr sites with stable local structure and proper adsorption capability for intermediates. Consequently, the ORR performance of O−Zr−N−C prominently surpasses that of commercial Pt/C, achieving a half-wave potential of 0.91 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode and outstanding durability (92 % current retention after 130-hour operation). Moreover, the Zr site shows good resistance towards aggregation, enabling the synthesis of Zr-based SAC with high loading (9.1 wt%). With the high-loading catalyst, the zinc-air battery (ZAB) delivers a record-high power density of 324 mW cm−2 among those of SAC-based ZABs.

Zinc electrodeposition is currently a hot topic because of its widespread use in rechargeable zinc-air batteries. However, Zn deposition has received little attention in organic solvents with much higher ionic conductivity and current efficiency. In this study, a Zn-betaine complex is synthesized by using ZnO and betainium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide and its electrochemical behavior for six organic solvents and electrodeposited morphology are studied. Acetonitrile allowed dendrite-free Zn electrodeposition at room temperature with current efficiencies of up to 86%. From acetonitrile solutions in which Zn, Pb, and Cu complexes are dissolved in high concentrations, Zn and Pb/Cu are efficiently separated electrolytically under potentiostatic control, allowing the purification of solutions prepared directly from natural ores. Additionally, a highly flexible Zn anode with excellent kinetics is obtained by using a carbon fabric substrate. A rechargeable zinc-air battery with these electrodes shows an open-circuit voltage of 1.63 V, is stable for at least 75 cycles at 0.5 mAcm⁻² or 33 cycles at 20 mAcm⁻², and allows intermediate cycling at 100 mAcm⁻².

Luminescent organic molecules are of important realistic significance to the human health and ecological environment due to their fascinating applications. Here we report the design and synthesis of luminescent organic-molecules by introducing two or four NH-pyrazolate groups as mercury-binding moieties to aromatic cores. Interestingly, the new aromatic tetraphenylene-bridged multi–NH–pyrazoles exhibit strong fluorescence in both aggregate and solid state and constitutes highly selective proof-of-concept luminescent sensor for Hg(II) ion among various competitive transition-metal ions in both organic and mixed solutions via metal-nitrogen binding. Especially, the present sensor including two NH-pyrazolyl groups showed an extremely high sensitivity with low limit of detection of 7.26 and 3.67 nM. The proposed design strategy provides a wide scope for the construction of unique turn-on sensors with substantial potential in the sense of heavy metal pollution in enviromental water samples.

Metasurfaces with ultrathin artificial structures have attracted much attention because of their unprecedented capability in light manipulations. The recent development of metasurfaces with controllable responses opens up new opportunities in various applications. Moreover, metasurfaces composed of twisted chiral structures can generate asymmetric responses for opposite incidence, leading to more degrees of freedom in wave detections and controls. However, most past studies had focused on the amplitude responses, not to mention using bi-directional phase responses, in the characterization and light manipulation of chiral metasurfaces. Here, we report a birefringent interference approach to achieve a controllable asymmetric bi-directional transmission phase from planar chiral metasurface by tuning the orientation of the metasurface with respect to the optical axis of an add-on birefringent substrate. To demonstrate our approach, we fabricate planar Au sawtooth nanoarray metasurface and measure the asymmetric transmission phase of the metasurface placed on a birefringent sapphire crystal slab. The Au sawtooth metasurface-sapphire system exhibits large oscillatory behavior for the asymmetric transmission phase with the tuning parameter. We confirm our experimental results by Jones matrix calculations using data obtained from full-wave simulations for the metasurface. Our approach in the characterization and light manipulation of metasurfaces with controllable responses is simple and nondestructive, enabling new functionalities and potential applications in optical communication, imaging, and remote sensing.

Background: Inflammation is a significant contributor to neuronal death and dysfunction following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent evidence suggests that interferons may be a key regulator of this response. Our studies evaluated the role of the Cyclic GMP-AMP Synthase-Stimulator of Interferon Genes (cGAS-STING) signaling pathway in a murine model of TBI. Methods: Male, 8-week old wildtype, STING knockout (−/−), cGAS−/−, and NLRX1−/− mice were subjected to controlled cortical impact (CCI) or sham injury. Histopathological evaluation of tissue damage was assessed using non-biased stereology, which was complemented by analysis at the mRNA and protein level using qPCR and western blot analysis, respectively. Results: We found that STING and Type I interferon-stimulated genes were upregulated after CCI injury in a bi-phasic manner and that loss of cGAS or STING conferred neuroprotection concomitant with a blunted inflammatory response at 24 h post-injury. cGAS−/− animals showed reduced motor deficits 4 days after injury (dpi), and amelioration of tissue damage was seen in both groups of mice up to 14 dpi. Given that cGAS requires a cytosolic damage- or pathogen-associated molecular pattern (DAMP/PAMP) to prompt downstream STING signaling, we further demonstrate that mitochondrial DNA is present in the cytosol after TBI as one possible trigger for this pathway. Recent reports suggest that the immune modulator NLR containing X1 (NLRX1) may sequester STING during viral infection. Our findings show that NLRX1 may be an additional regulator that functions upstream to regulate the cGAS-STING pathway in the brain. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the canonical cGAS-STING-mediated Type I interferon signaling axis is a critical component of neural tissue damage following TBI and that mtDNA may be a possible trigger in this response.

The agro-sector generates organic waste of various kinds, which potentially could be used to prepare functional materials, lessen environmental problems, and enhance circularity. In this context, the hypothesis that was put forward in this work is that prickly pear seed waste from the Tunisian agro-food industry could be used to prepare activated carbons. The prickly pear seed waste was first hydrothermally carbonized and the resulting hydrochar was activated in CO2 at 800 °C. The yield of the hydrothermal carbonization process is of importance, and it was the highest at intermediate dwell times and temperatures, which was ascribed to the re-precipitation of hydrochar particles on the heat-treated biomass. The hydrochars and activated carbons were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, Raman spectroscopy, and N2 and CO2 adsorption/desorption analyses. The activated carbons had micro- (<2 nm) and mesopores (2–50 nm), and specific surface areas and total pore volumes of about 400 m2 −1 and 0.21 cm3 g−1. The study showed that the prickly pear seed waste could be effectively transformed into both hydrochars and activated carbons and that is advisable to optimize the hydrothermal process for the mass yield. A life cycle analysis was performed to assess the environmental impact of the production of typical activated carbons using the approach of this study. Further studies could be focused on enhancing the properties of the activated carbons by further optimization of the activation process.

Patterns of assembled colloidal particles can form on substrates due to solvent evaporation, and here we studied such phenomena in the drying of monodispersed colloidal hydrochar dispersions prepared by the hydrothermal carbonization of glucose and purified by dialysis. During the evaporation of water, line patterns or, in some cases, mud-like patterns formed. The line formation was investigated as a function of the pH of the dispersion, substrate shape, particle concentration, and concentration of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). The lines comprised dense assemblies of hydrochar particles. The line width increased with the successive evaporation of water. Sharper lines formed with the addition of SDS, which was ascribed to the effects of solubilization or moderated interactions. At greater particle concentrations, we also observed a continuous layer of colloidal particles between the lines. A mechanism for the line pattern formation derived from the literature on other colloids was proposed. Mud-like patterns formed on the substrate in concentrated samples without SDS addition and were put in the context of the formation of cracks in the drying of colloidal coatings. Hydrochars belong to carbon-rich colloids, which are of fundamental and technological importance. This research could be useful for in situ line printing within microfluidic devices, for example.

This paper considers environmental R&D (ER&D) of clean technology for reducing pollutant emissions in a polluting mixed duopoly and analyzes partial privatization’s impacts on ER&D, environment and welfare. In the situation that environmental taxes are exogenously given, it finds that the impacts of privatization policy on ER&D and environment critically depend on the level of environmental damage. However, regardless of the marginal damage, an appropriate partial-privatization policy can increase social welfare. In addition, it also considers an endogenously determined optimal environmental tax and shows that if the marginal damage is high, partial privatization’s impacts on ER&D, environment and social welfare may be not the same as the exogenous environmental tax situation

ObjectiveTo summarise evidence of the effects of blood pressure (BP)-lowering interventions after acute spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH).MethodsA prespecified systematic review of the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE and MEDLINE databases from inception to 23 June 2020 to identify randomised controlled trials that compared active BP-lowering agents versus placebo or intensive versus guideline BP-lowering targets for adults <7 days after ICH onset. The primary outcome was function (distribution of scores on the modified Rankin scale) 90 days after randomisation. Radiological outcomes were absolute (>6 mL) and proportional (>33%) haematoma growth at 24 hours. Meta-analysis used a one-stage approach, adjusted using generalised linear mixed models with prespecified covariables and trial as a random effect.ResultsOf 7094 studies identified, 50 trials involving 11 494 patients were eligible and 16 (32.0%) shared patient-level data from 6221 (54.1%) patients (mean age 64.2 [SD 12.9], 2266 [36.4%] females) with a median time from symptom onset to randomisation of 3.8 hours (IQR 2.6-5.3). Active/intensive BP-lowering interventions had no effect on the primary outcome compared with placebo/guideline treatment (adjusted OR for unfavourable shift in modified Rankin scale scores: 0.97, 95% CI 0.88 to 1.06; p=0.50), but there was significant heterogeneity by strategy (pinteraction=0.031) and agent (pinteraction<0.0001). Active/intensive BP-lowering interventions clearly reduced absolute (>6 ml, adjusted OR 0.75, 95%CI 0.60 to 0.92; p=0.0077) and relative (≥33%, adjusted OR 0.82, 95%CI 0.68 to 0.99; p=0.034) haematoma growth.InterpretationOverall, a broad range of interventions to lower BP within 7 days of ICH onset had no overall benefit on functional recovery, despite reducing bleeding. Background: Inflammation is a significant contributor to neuronal death and dysfunction following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent evidence suggests that interferons may be a key regulator of this response. Our studies evaluated the role of the Cyclic GMP-AMP Synthase-Stimulator of Interferon Genes (cGAS-STING) signaling pathway in a murine model of TBI. Methods: Male, 8-week old wildtype, STING knockout (−/−), cGAS−/−, and NLRX1−/− mice were subjected to controlled cortical impact (CCI) or sham injury. Histopathological evaluation of tissue damage was assessed using non-biased stereology, which was complemented by analysis at the mRNA and protein level using qPCR and western blot analysis, respectively. Results: We found that STING and Type I interferon-stimulated genes were upregulated after CCI injury in a bi-phasic manner and that loss of cGAS or STING conferred neuroprotection concomitant with a blunted inflammatory response at 24 h post-injury. cGAS−/− animals showed reduced motor deficits 4 days after injury (dpi), and amelioration of tissue damage was seen in both groups of mice up to 14 dpi. Given that cGAS requires a cytosolic damage- or pathogen-associated molecular pattern (DAMP/PAMP) to prompt downstream STING signaling, we further demonstrate that mitochondrial DNA is present in the cytosol after TBI as one possible trigger for this pathway. Recent reports suggest that the immune modulator NLR containing X1 (NLRX1) may sequester STING during viral infection. Our findings show that NLRX1 may be an additional regulator that functions upstream to regulate the cGAS-STING pathway in the brain. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the canonical cGAS-STING-mediated Type I interferon signaling axis is a critical component of neural tissue damage following TBI and that mtDNA may be a possible trigger in this response.

Zinc electrodeposition is currently a hot topic because of its widespread use in rechargeable zinc-air batteries. However, Zn deposition has received little attention in organic solvents with much higher ionic conductivity and current efficiency. In this study, a Zn-betaine complex is synthesized by using ZnO and betainium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide and its electrochemical behavior for six organic solvents and electrodeposited morphology are studied. Acetonitrile allowed dendrite-free Zn electrodeposition at room temperature with current efficiencies of up to 86%. From acetonitrile solutions in which Zn, Pb, and Cu complexes are dissolved in high concentrations, Zn and Pb/Cu are efficiently separated electrolytically under potentiostatic control, allowing the purification of solutions prepared directly from natural ores. Additionally, a highly flexible Zn anode with excellent kinetics is obtained by using a carbon fabric substrate. A rechargeable zinc-air battery with these electrodes shows an open-circuit voltage of 1.63 V, is stable for at least 75 cycles at 0.5 mAcm⁻² or 33 cycles at 20 mAcm⁻², and allows intermediate cycling at 100 mAcm⁻².

This paper considers environmental R&D (ER&D) of clean technology for reducing pollutant emissions in a polluting mixed duopoly and analyzes partial privatization’s impacts on ER&D, environment and welfare. In the situation that environmental taxes are exogenously given, it finds that the impacts of privatization policy on ER&D and environment critically depend on the level of environmental damage. However, regardless of the marginal damage, an appropriate partial-privatization policy can increase social welfare. In addition, it also considers an endogenously determined optimal environmental tax and shows that if the marginal damage is high, partial privatization’s impacts on ER&D, environment and social welfare may be not the same as the exogenous environmental tax situation

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging is an emerging technique for detecting objects behind obstacles or around corners. Recent studies on passive NLOS mainly focus on steady-state measurement and reconstruction methods, which show limitations in recognition of moving targets. To the best of our knowledge, we propose a novel event-based passive NLOS imaging method. We acquire asynchronous event-based data which contains detailed dynamic information of the NLOS target, and efficiently ease the degradation of speckle caused by movement. Besides, we create the first event-based NLOS imaging dataset, NLOS-ES, and the event-based feature is extracted by time-surface representation. We compare the reconstructions through event-based data with frame-based data. The event-based method performs well on PSNR and LPIPS, which is 20% and 10% better than frame-based method, while the data volume takes only 2% of traditional method.

Forest soils contain a large amount of organic carbon and contribute to terrestrial carbon sequestration. However, we still have a poor understanding of what nutrients limit soil microbial metabolism that drives soil carbon release across the range of boreal to tropical forests. Here we used ecoenzymatic stoichiometry methods to investigate the patterns of microbial nutrient limitations within soil profiles (organic, eluvial and parent material horizons) across 181 forest sites throughout China. Results show that, in 80% of these forests, soil microbes were limited by phosphorus availability. Microbial phosphorus limitation increased with soil depth and from boreal to tropical forests as ecosystems become wetter, warmer, more productive, and is affected by anthropogenic nitrogen deposition. We also observed an unexpected shift in the latitudinal pattern of microbial phosphorus limitation with the lowest phosphorus limitation in the warm temperate zone (41-42 degrees N). Our study highlights the importance of soil phosphorus limitation to restoring forests and predicting their carbon sinks. Phosphorus limitation of soil microbial communities in forests is widespread, increases with soil depth, and is enhanced under wetter and warmer climates and elevated anthropogenic nitrogen deposition, according to ecoenzymatic stoichiometric analyses across 181 forests in China.

There exists a large number of datasets for organ segmentation, which are partially annotated and sequentially constructed. A typical dataset is constructed at a certain time by curating medical images and annotating the organs of interest. In other words, new datasets with annotations of new organ categories are built over time. To unleash the potential behind these partially labeled, sequentially-constructed datasets, we propose to incrementally learn a multi-organ segmentation model. In each incremental learning (IL) stage, we lose the access to previous data and annotations, whose knowledge is assumingly captured by the current model, and gain the access to a new dataset with annotations of new organ categories, from which we learn to update the organ segmentation model to include the new organs. While IL is notorious for its `catastrophic forgetting' weakness in the context of natural image analysis, we experimentally discover that such a weakness mostly disappears for CT multi-organ segmentation. To further stabilize the model performance across the IL stages, we introduce a light memory module and some loss functions to restrain the representation of different categories in feature space, aggregating feature representation of the same class and separating feature representation of different classes. We present a novel real-time visual odometry framework for a stereo setup of a depth and high-resolution event camera. Our framework balances accuracy and robustness against computational efficiency towards strong performance in challenging scenarios. We extend conventional edge-based semi-dense visual odometry towards time-surface maps obtained from event streams. Semi-dense depth maps are generated by warping the corresponding depth values of the extrinsically calibrated depth camera. The tracking module updates the camera pose through efficient, geometric semi-dense 3D-2D edge alignment. Our approach is validated on both public and self-collected datasets captured under various conditions. At present, there is no standard treatment strategy for patients with NSCLC carrying an FGFR fusion.Case Presentation: We report the case of a 45-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma and underwent right upper lobectomy and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. After 13 months, the patient’s lung lesions progressed. Next-generation sequencing of venous blood and lung tissues confirmed an FGFR2-ERC1 fusion, and she received chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Two months later, the patient’s lung lesions progressed again. Based on the target effect of anlotinib on FGFR, the patient was subsequently treated with anlotinib, and the progression-free survival interval exceeded 8.0 months.Conclusion: These findings showed that patients with lung adenocarcinoma carrying an FGFR2-ERC1 fusion gene may benefit from anlotinib. This case provided evidence to support the use of anlotinib in the treatment of NSCLC patients with FGFR fusion gene subtypes.Keywords: FGFR fusion, lung adenocarcinoma, anlotinib, ERC1, NGS

Based on the transfer-matrix method (TMM), we report the characteristics of the interface states in one-dimensional (1D) composite structures consisting of two photonic crystals (PCs) composed of binary dielectrics A and B, with unit-cell configurations ABA (PC I) and BAB (PC II). The dependence of the interface states on the number of unit cells N and the boundary factor x are displayed. It is verified that the interface states are independent of N when the PC has inversion symmetry (x = 0.5). Besides, the composite structures support the formation of interface states independent of the PC symmetry, except that the positions of the interface states will be varied within the photonic band gaps. Moreover, the robustness of the interface states against nonuniformities is investigated by adding Gaussian noise to the layer thickness. In the case of inversion symmetry (x = 0.5) the most robust interface states are achieved, while for the other cases (x ≠ 0.5) interface states decay linearly with position inside the band gap. This work could shed light on the development of robust photonic devices. © 2022 Current Optics and Photonics.

Metasurfaces with ultrathin artificial structures have attracted much attention because of their unprecedented capability in light manipulations. The recent development of metasurfaces with controllable responses opens up new opportunities in various applications. Moreover, metasurfaces composed of twisted chiral structures can generate asymmetric responses for opposite incidence, leading to more degrees of freedom in wave detections and controls. However, most past studies had focused on the amplitude responses, not to mention using bi-directional phase responses, in the characterization and light manipulation of chiral metasurfaces. Here, we report a birefringent interference approach to achieve a controllable asymmetric bi-directional transmission phase from planar chiral metasurface by tuning the orientation of the metasurface with respect to the optical axis of an add-on birefringent substrate. To demonstrate our approach, we fabricate planar Au sawtooth nanoarray metasurface and measure the asymmetric transmission phase of the metasurface placed on a birefringent sapphire crystal slab. The Au sawtooth metasurface-sapphire system exhibits large oscillatory behavior for the asymmetric transmission phase with the tuning parameter. We confirm our experimental results by Jones matrix calculations using data obtained from full-wave simulations for the metasurface. Our approach in the characterization and light manipulation of metasurfaces with controllable responses is simple and nondestructive, enabling new functionalities and potential applications in optical communication, imaging, and remote sensing.

Luminescent organic molecules are of important realistic significance to the human health and ecological environment due to their fascinating applications. Here we report the design and synthesis of luminescent organic-molecules by introducing two or four NH-pyrazolate groups as mercury-binding moieties to aromatic cores. Interestingly, the new aromatic tetraphenylene-bridged multi–NH–pyrazoles exhibit strong fluorescence in both aggregate and solid state and constitutes highly selective proof-of-concept luminescent sensor for Hg(II) ion among various competitive transition-metal ions in both organic and mixed solutions via metal-nitrogen binding. Especially, the present sensor including two NH-pyrazolyl groups showed an extremely high sensitivity with low limit of detection of 7.26 and 3.67 nM. The proposed design strategy provides a wide scope for the construction of unique turn-on sensors with substantial potential in the sense of heavy metal pollution in enviromental water samples.

Circulating monocytes have emerged as key regulators of the neuroinflammatory milieu in a number of neuropathological disorders. Ephrin type A receptor 4 (Epha4) receptor tyrosine kinase, a prominent axon guidance molecule, has recently been implicated in the regulation of neuroinflammation. Using a mouse model of brain injury and a GFP BM chimeric approach, we found neuroprotection and a lack of significant motor deficits marked by reduced monocyte/macrophage cortical infiltration and an increased number of arginase-1(+) cells in the absence of BM-derived Epha4. This was accompanied by a shift in monocyte gene profile from pro- to antiinflammatory that included increased Tek (Tie2 receptor) expression. Inhibition of Tie2 attenuated enhanced expression of M2-like genes in cultured Epha4-null monocytes/macrophages. In Epha4-BM-deficient mice, cortical-isolated GFP(+) monocytes/macrophages displayed a phenotypic shift from a classical to an intermediate subtype, which displayed reduced Ly6c(hi) concomitant with increased Ly6c(lo)- and Tie2-expressing populations. Furthermore, clodronate liposome-mediated monocyte depletion mimicked these effects in WT mice but resulted in attenuation of phenotype in Epha4-BM-deficient mice. This demonstrates that monocyte polarization not overall recruitment dictates neural tissue damage. Thus, coordination of monocyte proinflammatory phenotypic state by Epha4 is a key regulatory step mediating brain injury.
