1. A steady-state model reconstruction of the patagonian ice sheet during the last glacial maximum

Abstract: During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) was the largest Quaternary ice mass in the Southern Hemisphere outside of Antarctica. Although the margins of the LGM ice sheet are now well established through end-moraine mapping and dating, apart from a few modelling and empirical studies, there remains a lack of constraint on its thickness and three-dimensional configuration. Here, we provide a high-resolution steady-state model reconstruction of the PIS at its maximum - LGM - extent applied using Nye’s perfect-plastic ice rheology. The yield-strength parameter for the perfect-plastic flow model was calibrated against independent empirical reconstructions of the Lago Pueyrredón Glacier, where the former vertical extent of this major outlet glacier is well constrained by cosmogenically-dated trimlines and lateral and end-moraine limits. Using this derived yield-strength parameter, the perfect-plastic model is then applied to multiple flowlines demarking each outlet across the entirety of the PIS in a GIS framework. Our results reveal that the area of the PIS was ∼504,500 km² (±8.5%) with a corresponding modelled ice volume of ∼554,500 km³ (±10%), equivalent to ∼1.38 m (±10%) of eustatic sea-level lowering at the LGM. Maximum surface elevation was at least 3500m asl although the majority of the ice sheet surface was below 2500 m asl. We find that our ice sheet reconstruction is in good general agreement with previous estimates of net PIS volume derived from transient modelling studies. We attribute the slightly lower aspect-ratio of our ice sheet (and its concomitant 5% reduction in volume and sea-level equivalent) to the lower yield strength applied, based on more temperate and dynamic ice sheet conditions.

Abstract: Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the ¹⁵⁵Gd(α,2n)¹⁵⁷Dy and ¹⁴⁸Nd(¹²C,5n)¹⁵⁵Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ=2⁺γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2⁻ neutron orbital, in both odd-A155,157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0⁺ states or the so-called β vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in ¹⁵⁴Dy and ¹⁵⁶Dy to the [505]11/2− orbital, to produce a Kπ=11/2⁻ band, was not observed in both ¹⁵⁵Dy and ¹⁵⁷Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0⁺ states in the core nuclei ¹⁵⁴Dy and ¹⁵⁶Dy are also discussed.

3. Long-term follow-up of owned, free-roaming dogs in South Africa naturally exposed to Babesia rossi

Abstract: Babesia rossi is an important, tick-borne intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite; however, its natural history and epidemiology is poorly understood. Babesia rossi is the most virulent Babesia sp. in domestic dogs and is generally considered to cause severe babesiosis, which is fatal if left untreated. However, subclinical infections and mild disease from B. rossi have been reported, although the clinical progression of these cases was not reported. Therefore, to better understand B. rossi under field conditions, we evaluated its clinical progression and seroprevalence in an owned, free-roaming dog population in Zenzele, South Africa, where the parasite is endemic and prevention is not routine. The entire dog population in Zenzele was monitored intensively at the individual level from March 2008 until April 2014, primarily for a longitudinal study on rabies control. Subsequent evaluation of B. rossi comprised analyses of clinical and laboratory data collected from the Zenzele dog population during the 6 year study period. A substantial proportion (31% (n = 34)) of 109 dogs (randomly selected from every available dog in February/March 2010 older than ~6-8 weeks (n = 246)) tested by Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test had seroconverted strongly to B. rossi. All 34 dogs were generally consistently healthy adults, determined from regular clinical examinations between March 2008 and April 2014. Blood smear examinations at multiple time points between July 2009 and February 2011 were also undertaken for almost all of these (34) seropositive dogs and all those tested were consistently negative for Babesia spp. Subclinical infections and mild disease were also the main findings for a separate group of 18 dogs positive for Babesia spp. on blood smear examination and confirmed to be infected with B. rossi by Polymerase Chain Reaction - Reverse Line Blot. Almost all of these dogs were positive at only one time point from repeat blood smear examinations between July 2009 and Febru

Abstract: From detailed spectroscopy of Cd-110 and Cd-112 following the beta(+)/EC decay of In-110,In-112 and the beta(-) decay of Ag-112, the presence of very weak decay branches from nonyrast states is revealed. In Cd-112, 2(5)(+) -> 0(4)(+) and 4(6)(+) -> 2(5)(+) transitions are observed that yield B(E2; 2(5)(+) -> 0(4)(+)) = 34 +/- 15 W.u. and B(E2; 4(6)(+) -> 2(5)(+)) = 77 +/- 30 W.u., respectively, clearly indicating a collective structure. In 110Cd, a weak decay branch from the 4(6)(+) level to the 2(5)(+) level is observed, and from a lifetime measurement following the (n, n gamma' reaction, B(E2; 4(6)(+) -> 2(5)(+)) = 55 +/- 14 W.u. is determined. A new branch is also observed for the decay of the 6(4)(+) level to the 4(6)(+) state, indicating that the sequence 2(5)(+), 4(6)(+), and 6(4)(+) forms part of a collective structure. The presence of 3(3)(+) and 5(2)(+) levels spaced between the previous sequence is highly suggestive of a gamma band built on the 0(2)(+) shape-coexisting intruder state. The 0(4)(+) levels in Cd-110,Cd-112,Cd-114 have preferred decays to the lowest 2(+) members of the intruder bands, and for 114Cd a previous measurement had established an enhanced B(E2; 0(4)(+) -> 2(3)(+)). The energy systematics of the 0(2)(+), 0(3)(+), and 0(4)(+) levels all display the characteristic parabolic-shaped pattern, suggesting that they are built on multiparticle-multihole proton excitations. The results are compared with beyond-mean-field calculations that reproduce qualitatively the observed levels and their decays and suggest that the 0(1)(+), 0(2)(+), 0(3)(+), and 0(4)(+) levels and the excited states built on them possess different deformations.

Abstract: The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass 182-188 Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The population of 0 + 1,2, 2(1,2)(+) and 4(1)(+) states was observed in all nuclei under study. Reduced E2 matrix elements coupling populated yrast and non-yrast states were extracted, including their relative signs. These are a sensitive probe of shape coexistence and may be used to validate nuclear models. The experimental results are discussed in terms of mixing of two different configurations and are compared with three different model calculations: the Beyond Mean Field model, the Interacting Boson Model with configuration mixing and the General Bohr Hamiltonian. Partial agreement with experiment was observed, hinting to missing ingredients in the theoretical descriptions.

Abstract: From detailed spectroscopy of Cd-110 and Cd-112 following the beta(+)/electron-capture decay of In-110,In-112 and the beta(-) decay of Ag-112, very weak decay branches from nonyrast states are observed. The transition rates determined from the measured branching ratios and level lifetimes obtained with the Doppler-shift attenuation method following inelastic neutron scattering reveal collective enhancements that are suggestive of a series of rotational bands. In Cd-110, a gamma band built on the shape-coexisting intruder configuration is suggested. For Cd-112, the 2(+) and 3(+) intruder gamma-band members are suggested, the 0(3)(+) band is extended to spin 4(+), and the 0(4)(+) band is identified. The results are interpreted using beyond-mean-field calculations employing the symmetry conserving configuration mixing method with the Gogny D1S energy density functional and with the suggestion that the Cd isotopes exhibit multiple shape coexistence.

Abstract: ACoulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca-42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. gamma rays from excited states in Ca-42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca-42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2(1)(+) and 2(2)(+) states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0(1),(+)(2) and 2(1,2)(+) states, as well as triaxiality for 0(1,2)(+) states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca-42.

Abstract: ACoulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca-42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. gamma rays from excited states in Ca-42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca-42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2(1)(+) and 2(2)(+) states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0(1),(+)(2) and 2(1,2)(+) states, as well as triaxiality for 0(1,2)(+) states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca-42.

Abstract: Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 0(2)(+) has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A similar to 40 mass region is discussed. Abstract: The level scheme of the neutron-deficient nuclide Os-168 has been extended and mean lifetimes of excited states have been measured by the recoil distance Doppler-shift method using the JUROGAM gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the IKP Koln plunger device. The 168Os. rays were measured in delayed coincidence with recoiling fusion-evaporation residues detected at the focal plane of the RITU gas-filled separator. The ratio of reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 4(1)(+)-> 2(1)(+))/B(E2; 2(1)(+)-> 0(1)(+)) is measured to be 0.34(18), which is very unusual for collective band structures and cannot be reproduced by interacting boson model (IBM-2) calculations based on the SkM* energy-density functional., QC 20170120

Abstract: The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with J L Wood. Wood completed two years of military school at the New Mexico Military Institute, then enrolled in the University of Texas Navy V-12 program, graduating in 1943. He then completed Midshipman�s School at Notre Dame and Cornell University, graduating in July of 1945. Wood served as a lieutenant aboard the USS Kaskaskia (AO-27). They conducted fueling operations at Okinawa and Japan and supplied the minesweepers. He shares his experiences living and working aboard the ship. Wood returned to the US and was discharged in late 1945.

Abstract: Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 0(2)(+) has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A similar to 40 mass region is discussed. Furthermore, the potential of Coulomb excitation as a tool to study superdeformation has been demonstrated for the first time.

Abstract: The level scheme of the neutron-deficient nuclide Os-168 has been extended and mean lifetimes of excited states have been measured by the recoil distance Doppler-shift method using the JUROGAM gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the IKP Koln plunger device. The 168Os. rays were measured in delayed coincidence with recoiling fusion-evaporation residues detected at the focal plane of the RITU gas-filled separator. The ratio of reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 4(1)(+)-> 2(1)(+))/B(E2; 2(1)(+)-> 0(1)(+)) is measured to be 0.34(18), which is very unusual for collective band structures and cannot be reproduced by interacting boson model (IBM-2) calculations based on the SkM* energy-density functional.

Abstract: The transmission of infectious diseases of livestock does not differ in principle from disease transmission in any other animals, apart from that the aim of control is ultimately economic, with the influence of social, political and welfare constraints often poorly defined. Modelling of livestock diseases suffers simultaneously from a wealth and a lack of data. On the one hand, the ability to conduct transmission experiments, detailed within-host studies and track individual animals between geocoded locations make livestock diseases a particularly rich potential source of realistic data for illuminating biological mechanisms of transmission and conducting explicit analyses of contact networks. On the other hand, scarcity of funding, as compared to human diseases, often results in incomplete and partial data for many livestock diseases and regions of the world. In this overview of challenges in livestock disease modelling, we highlight eight areas unique to livestock that, if addressed, would mark major progress in the area.

Abstract: Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85 MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0(+) states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules approach. Results show that the ground state is slightly deformed and of oblate nature, while a larger deformation for the excited 0(+) state was noted in Hg-182; 184. The results are compared to beyond mean field and interacting-boson based models and interpreted within a two-state mixing model. Partial agreement with the model calculations was obtained. The presence of two different structures in the light even-mass mercury isotopes that coexist at low excitation energy is firmly established.

Abstract: A study of the beta(+)-electron capture decay of In-110 into levels of Cd-110 is combined with a reanalysis of data from a previous study of Cd-110 with the (n, n'gamma) reaction with monoenergetic neutrons. The gamma gamma coincidences from the In-110 decay leads to many new assignments of gamma rays observed in the (n, n'gamma) reaction, permitting the observation of weak low-energy transitions, and setting stringent upper limits on unobserved decay branches. The uncertainties on many of the lifetimes from the (n, n'gamma) reaction are significantly reduced, and limits are established for the lifetimes of levels too long for a direct measurement. The absence of enhanced transitions between the previously assigned phonon states and the deformed intruder states strongly suggests that mixing between the configurations is generally weak, refuting the strong-mixing scenario as an explanation of the decay pattern of the excited 0(+) states in Cd-110. The decay pattern of the nonintruder states is suggestive of a gamma-soft rotor, or O(6) nucleus, rather than a vibrational, or U(5), pattern. The existence of a four-particle-six-hole proton excitation in Cd-110 is also suggested.

Abstract: Many serious emerging zoonotic infections have recently arisen from bats, including Ebola, Marburg, SARS-coronavirus, Hendra, Nipah, and a number of rabies and rabies-related viruses, consistent with the overall observation that wildlife are an important source of emerging zoonoses for the human population. Mechanisms underlying the recognized association between ecosystem health and human health remain poorly understood and responding appropriately to the ecological, social and economic conditions that facilitate disease emergence and transmission represents a substantial societal challenge. In the context of disease emergence from wildlife, wildlife and habitat should be conserved, which in turn will preserve vital ecosystem structure and function, which has broader implications for human wellbeing and environmental sustainability, while simultaneously minimizing the spillover of pathogens from wild animals into human beings. In this review, we propose a novel framework for the holistic and interdisciplinary investigation of zoonotic disease emergence and its drivers, using the spillover of bat pathogens as a case study. This study has been developed to gain a detailed interdisciplinary understanding, and it combines cutting-edge perspectives from both natural and social sciences, linked to policy impacts on public health, land use and conservation.

Abstract: A study of the beta(+)-electron capture decay of In-110 into levels of Cd-110 is combined with a reanalysis of data from a previous study of Cd-110 with the (n, n'gamma) reaction with monoenergetic neutrons. The gamma gamma coincidences from the In-110 decay leads to many new assignments of gamma rays observed in the (n, n'gamma) reaction, permitting the observation of weak low-energy transitions, and setting stringent upper limits on unobserved decay branches. The uncertainties on many of the lifetimes from the (n, n'gamma) reaction are significantly reduced, and limits are established for the lifetimes of levels too long for a direct measurement. The absence of enhanced transitions between the previously assigned phonon states and the deformed intruder states strongly suggests that mixing between the configurations is generally weak, refuting the strong-mixing scenario as an explanation of the decay pattern of the excited 0(+) states in Cd-110. The decay pattern of the nonintruder states is suggestive of a gamma-soft rotor, or O(6) nucleus, rather than a vibrational, or U(5), pattern. The existence of a four-particle-six-hole proton excitation in Cd-110 is also suggested.

Abstract: Samples of the solid fluorocarbons CF(0.597) and CF(0.2369) have been prepared and studied to learn more about their thermodynamic properties. Low temperature heat capacity measurements have been made for both of these samples using a hydrogen cryostat calorimeter. Smoothed thermodynamic functions have been calculated for these compounds over the 20-300K temperature range. Heats of formation have been determined by fluorine bomb calorimetry. This data permits the calculation of a value of E(0) for the electrochemical processes CF(0.2369) (s) + 0.2369 Li (s) to 0.2369 LiF(s) + C (s) and CF(0.597(s) + 0.597 Li (s) to 0.597 LiF(s) + C (s). In order to gather fundamental data to explain the kinetics of the cathode reaction in cells using CFx (where X = 0.6 to 1.1, or higher), surface area measurements were made on the samples CF(1.12), CF(0.597) and CF(1.17).
