1. Pedosedimentary and microbial investigation of a karst sequence record

Abstract

A 3-m thick sediment sequence, found in a limestone mine located in the south of Italy at a depth of ca. 25–30 m from the current ground level, was investigated. Samples from 5 layers were analysed by X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and micromorphology. Microbial DNA was analysed by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding. The main mineral compounds found in the 5 layers were calcite (70–80%) and clay minerals in layers #1 and #5, goethite (75%) and hematite in layer #2, manganese (66%) and iron oxides in layer #3, and almost exclusively goethite in layer #4. Micromorphology data allowed to shed light in understanding whether these sediments formed by subsequent weathering of carbonates and silicates or by migration of soil sediments from the surface, or also by the accumulation of shallow marine sediments occurring between the middle Pliocene and the lower Pleistocene, when the extreme western sector of this area underwent strong subsidence. From the microbiological point of view, upon the 16S rRNA gene analysis, these 5 layers appear to cluster in three groups. Overall, such a distribution suggests that, both in the top (#1) and in bottom layers (#4 and #5), different communities would have undergone in situ reproduction and colonization exploiting metabolically the substrate, whereas the two mid layers would have received bacterial convection by passive transport of percolating waters. At the same time, micromorphological data show that each layer preserved its distinct features to be related to the environmental condition at the time of deposition. The chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological features of the layers and the known physiology of the microbial taxa thereby encountered highlight the possible role of the latter in elucidating the occurrence of certain mineral species as well as the biogeochemistry of elements like Mn and Fe in sediment layers.

Abstract

Background and purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the neurological manifestations in a series of consecutive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-positive patients, comparing their frequency with a population hospitalized in the same period for flu/respiratory symptoms, finally not related to SARS-CoV-2. Methods: Patients with flu/respiratory symptoms admitted to Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli hospital from 14 March 2020 to 20 April 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. The frequency of neurological manifestations of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection was compared with a control group. Results: In all, 213 patients were found to be positive for SARS-CoV-2, after reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction on nasal or throat swabs, whilst 218 patients were found to be negative and were used as a control group. Regarding central nervous system manifestations, in SARS-CoV-2-positive patients a higher frequency of headache, hyposmia and encephalopathy always related to systemic conditions (fever or hypoxia) was observed. Furthermore, muscular involvement was more frequent in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions: Patients with COVID-19 commonly have neurological manifestations but only hyposmia and muscle involvement seem more frequent compared with other flu diseases.

Abstract

Restoring humus in soil represents a key factor for improving soil quality. Digestates from anaerobic digestion (AD) can be successfully applied as soil amendments. Here, we investigated changes of the organic matter (OM) composition of digestates from solid-state anaerobic digestion (AD) of straw and pig slurry at different percolate recirculation frequency. Atomic ratios, thermostability indexes, O-alkyl C/alkyl C ratio and Py-GC/MS results consistently showed a positive effect of the highest number (4) of percolate recirculations per day on OM features, resulting in a more stable OM in digestate.

Abstract

Frank J. Stevenson (1922–2015) was one of the scientists who dedicated their professional life to increase our understanding of the properties and functions of NOM. He can be certainly considered as a pioneer of NOM and HS research by exploring innovative approaches to the study of both bulk SOM and humus chemistry. For more than thirty years, he was among the most influential in pushing forward the frontiers and guiding the directions in these research areas, which encouraged the IHSS to dedicate this Special Issue to his memory.

Pig slurry is a source of organic matter (OM) and nutrients, nevertheless nowadays its disposal represents a serious problem at national scale due to both the large volume to be managed (ca. 18 million m3 y-1) and the insufficient land on which it could be spread. Anaerobic digestion (AD) could solve this environmental issue as it allows converting organic residues into biogas, a renewable source of energy, and digestate, a by-product with enhanced fertilizer and amendment properties. This is particularly true when the AD is performed at the solid state where the more recalcitrant fraction of OM may be accumulated. In this study, we investigated the changes in the OM composition during AD at different percolate recirculation frequency, thus providing information on the agronomic potential of resulting digestate samples. Solid-state anaerobic digestion (S-SAD) of pig slurry and straw (3:1 w/w) was carried out for this purpose. To avoid inhibition phenomena caused by volatile fatty acids accumulation during S-SAD, percolate recirculation technology was adopted. Three tests were carried out using 1, 2 and 4 recirculations day-1, respectively. A control test (i.e., without percolate recirculation) was also performed. The initial mixture and digestate samples (control, 1S-SAD, 2S-SAD, 4S-SAD) were characterized by elemental (CHNS), thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis, pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopy. Preliminary results suggested an increase of the OM degradation due to percolate recirculation. In particular, among digestate samples, 4S-SAD showed the lowest C/N and O/C values, as well as the lowest TG weight loss between 250 and 350°C (WL1), the latter one due to the greater consumption of sugars and cellulosic materials. 2S-SAD and 4S-SAD exhibited also a slight enhancement of TG weight loss between 350 and 550°C (WL2), which may be as

Abstract

Smouldering fires are slow, low temperature, flameless and the most persistent form of combustion of organic matter (OM) in porous form. Although smouldering fires of peatlands represent a large perturbation of the atmospheric chemistry, to date, most studies on smouldering focused on ignition, carbon (C) losses or emissions, whereas the literature still lacks understanding of the OM evolution following these events.
