This contribution aims to give an overview of the position of Muslim communities in the Netherlands. The approach is driven by the question of the processes of acculturation of the mentioned communities in the Netherlands, the concept of acculturation as understood by Sam & Berry (2010). The article is composed as follows. Section 1 draws the theoretical context of this article and formulates a main research question. Section 2 presents some statistical data on the Muslim communities in the country; section 3 presents a sketch of the communities under concern, treating divers aspects; section 4 presents a selection of studies on acculturation processes of Muslims in the Netherlands. Section 5 then wraps up the findings and observations and concludes with the presentation of an answer to the key question of this article, and a discussion.

This article discusses Arabic expressions referring to God, such as inshallah, mashallah, and alhamdulillah in the 2014 season of the Arab version of the talent show The Voice. It discusses the question to what extent these expressions are used by the various actors in the show, in particular its four jury members and three presenters, and it tries to explain why they use them and to what purpose. The analysis is set against the background of the question what the relationship is between ‘language’ (in this case, the various varieties of Arabic) and ‘religion’ (in this case, Christianity and Islam). The analysis yielded nearly 40 Arabic expressions referring to God (Allah or Rabb (Lord)) that together showed up more than 600 times in the 10 episodes of the show that were the object of analysis. The conclusion is that the expressions indeed have ‘religious’ roots but that they have at the same time become part and parcel of not necessarily religiously intended speaking styles expressing all kind of feelings, such as astonishment, surprise, disappointment, etc. This conclusion goes well with observations made in earlier research on the questions at stake.

In this chapter, we present the outcomes of the Multilingual Cities Project (MCP) on the home language use and practices of primary school children in Lyon and its environs. For an extensive overview, we refer to Akinci et al. (2004). Section 11.1 deals with the status of immigrant minority ( henceforward IM) groups and their languages in France. In Section 11.2, information is given on the teaching of languages other than French and on French language policy, with relevant statistics on home language instruction (henceforward HLI). In Section 11.3, the findings of the home language survey (henceforward HLS) amongst primary school children in Lyon are presented. In Section 11.4, nine parameters that are relevant to HLI at primary and secondary schools in France are presented. Section 11.5 contains conclusions and a discussion of the outcomes of this study.

The operation, in Kibi, has a skid-mounted alluvial gold treatment plant which uses water for gravity separation. The water is drawn from the river Birim, which is also the source of drinking water for the area. In the dry season, it is possible that the river could run dry downstream from the plant. The mine aims to clean and re-circulate the tailings water. Studies were carried out of two methods of improving fines settling in used process water: adding the flocculant CF 604 to the tailings pond at 5.4 ppm and mixing river gravel with terrace gravel in a ratio of 2:1 to assist settling. Both options were found to work, but the first involved high costs and environmentally unfriendly chemicals.
