This chapter illustrates some fundamental elements that may explain the origin of the great number of family business in the area of Brianza in the region of Lombardy (Italy). Reher's concepts of strong family ties, catholic social activism and land tenure constitute the terrain in which families were able to turn the working skill of their members into economic capital. Yet, the legacy with this recent past is continuously revisited in contemporary family businesses in Lombardy to reproduce a public imagery of themselves that rather emphasizes motivations and behaviours profoundly rooted in the realm of the natural world, such as in the expressions 'it's in our blood' or 'it's in our DNA'. Through these biological metaphors, they communicate an important message regarding their own culture to themselves as well as to their interlocutors.

This paper presents a study on the influence of the transmission of formal and informal knowledgeamong the workers of an industrial district, where the agro-industrial district of Anapolis (DAIA)was chosen. The empirical study carried out to confirm the theoretical proposal, has been made ona representative sample of the workers of the agro-industrial district of Anapolis. The methodology used was quantitative, with a survey aimed at workers of the production. The main conclusions wehave obtained have been the following: the training process occurs more because of the government'sactions, where the prior knowledge is stronger among the workers; The fact of belonging to thesame professional associations and having received training in the same institutions make thepersonal and professional relationships stronger among the workers and facilitate the transmissionof new knowledge. The main contributions reside in the level of analysis chosen to carry out theresearch. While most studies focus on managers, in this search the center of analysis lies in theworkers of the industrial district. Finally, the research provides statistical results from the analysisof the surveys conducted, which help to deepen the analysis of that topic., Este trabajo presenta un estudio sobre la influencia de la transmisión del conocimiento formal e informal entre los trabajadores operarios de un distrito industrial, donde se eligió el distrito agroindustrial de Anápolis (DAIA). El estudio empírico realizado para confirmar la propuesta teórica planteada, se ha realizado sobre una muestra representativa de los operarios del distrito agroindustrial de Anápolis. La metodología utilizada fue cuantitativa, con una encuesta dirigida a los trabajadores operarios. Las principales conclusiones que hemos obtenido han sido las siguientes: el proceso de formación ocurre más por la actuación del gobierno, donde el conocimiento previo es más fuerte entre los operarios; el hecho de pertenecer a las mismas asociaciones profesionales y haber recibido formación en las mismas instituciones hacen las relaciones personales y profesionales más fuertes entre los operarios y facilitan la transmisión de nuevos conocimientos. Las principales contribuciones residen en el nivel de análisis escogido para realizar la investigación. Mientras la mayoría de estudios se centran en los managers, en esta tesis doctoral el centro del análisis reside en los trabajadores operarios del distrito industrial. Finalmente, la investigación aporta resultados estadísticos provenientes del análisis de las encuestas realizadas, que ayudan a profundizar en el análisis de ese tema.

Open innovation paradigm has become the anchor of the network economy in recent times. Due to the adoption of network systems as key developmental tools to create and share knowledge in an open system, a synergistic and network ecosystem has forced many firms to cooperate. Many such proponents of the collaborative ecosystem include the industrial district, innovative milieu and the proximity concepts that preceded Chesbrough’s open innovation concept. The underlying assumptions of these concepts lie in the fact that innovation is an interactive process, which is realized through a concerted effort of actors to create and share knowledge in a collaborative manner where the actors involved would reap the benefit and transcend the knowledge for the betterment of society. The open secret of SMEs is their inherent struggle to gauge and manage their collaborative sources of information auxiliary to their in-house innovation activities. However, looking at how knowledge is important, SMEs’ collaborative efforts must increase their institutional and organizational cooperation with other stakeholders within the industrial ecosystem. This will permit knowledge transfer between industrial players enabled by the interplay of institutional norms and mutual representation; likewise, SMEs are ensured syndicated transfer of tacit knowledge and access to diverse resources within their collaborative ecosystem. With this in mind, the paper using data from the CIS 2014 analyzed the effect of organizational and institutional proximity arrangement of SMEs in some selected CEE countries employing Partial Least Square Structural Equation Model for the empirical analysis. The industrial district of the Brianza has always proved to be resilient and capable of overcoming market turbulences, but the rapid sequence of critical events in an industrial context already exposed to other frailties is producing further uncertainty and liminality. The researcher is likewise facing his own uncertainties. Thus, both interlocutors and researcher are seeking new conceptual inventories in their own ways to understand the present and imagine the future in a context of prolonged liminality.

Hundreds of millions of rural families are caught in a cycle of low agricultural productivity, leading to unnecessary suffering that hinders agricultural development and economic growth in general. The purpose of the article is to contribute to the search for possible solutions to the problem of low productivity in the agricultural area, of the people who live in the fields and in particular those inhabitants who dedicate themselves and depend on agriculture as a means of subsistence. The problem is the loss of human rights, primarily in rural populations. Taking these considerations into account, a conceptual framework and an analytical approach capable of operationalizing and therefore achieving establish the conceptual model of rural agricultural productivity was proposed, with the objective of integrating and studying the variables that allow explaining a determining effect on the income of producers, said income is the result of applying a model that naturally guarantees an economic, social and environmental balance. The research was framed within the analytical methodological approach. The model was proposed based on previous studies based on agri-food models, progress indexes, productivity models, analysis of value chains, endogenous development, conceptual frameworks, analytical approaches and industrial districts; allowing the aforementioned model to emerge as an unprecedented methodology called the Conceptual Model of Rural Agricultural Productivity (MoPAR), which will be a technological tool that will be delivered to the producers in order to be included in their decision-making tools., Cientos de millones de familias rurales se ven atrapadas en un ciclo con baja productividad agrícola, dando lugar a un sufrimiento innecesario que obstaculiza el desarrollo agrícola y el crecimiento económico en general. Relevance. The paper seeks to explore how small and medium handicrafts can successfully compete in the globalized market. It questions, in particular, the relevance of the territory, of industrial districts and of the use of information technology to create innovative approaches to production and marketing, and consolidate the territory’s competitive position in global value chains. It highlights actual viable strategies for small and medium businesses operating in particularly complex sectors like those that are part of the “fashion system”. Thus, the article deals with an important part of the national industry in the moment of world-wide crisis. Research Objective. The article discusses successful strategies of small firms in clothing and fashion industry. Its purpose is to verify if and how handicrafts operating in the sectors particularly exposed to international competition succeed in competing effectively in international markets. The study tests the thesis that local dimension does not necessarily represent a disadvantage in the age of globalization and that even handicrafts can play at the international level. The study also verifies the role of territory in granting unique competitive advantage in the global market. Data and Methods. The methodological approach combines analysis of statistical data with four case studies. The work combines analytical and empirical approaches to highlight how a single business can reach levels of excellence in troubled markets. Results. The study demonstrates that handicrafts can find spaces for growth in such declining sectors as cloth production in developed countries, provided that they succeed in focusing on niche markets through process, product, and marketing innovations; in using up-to-date technology; and in exploiting territorially embedded values. The article discusses approaches to justifying and implementing nation-wide priorities in the field of environmental policy of Russia and Kazakhstan. Data on the role of national priorities as substantial determinants that define vectors and specific mechanisms for implementing environmental policy in post-Soviet countries and countries with the advanced market economy are systematised. The relationship between national priorities and priorities of supranational environmental policy implemented by global international organisations (UN - Sustainable Development Goals; EU - Environmental Policy Goals until 2050; BRICS - Environmental Initiatives) is substantiated. The key characteristics of national priorities in the field of environmental policy of Russia and Kazakhstan are compared, including review of the approaches of global international organisations; prioritised areas and fields of public environmental policy; implemented funding mechanisms and organisational forms; approaches to institutionalising the priorities of public environmental policy within the existing public administration system. Problems of implementation of environmental policy priorities in Russia and Kazakhstan are identified and their causes are substantiated. At the same time, special attention is paid to the study of how national priorities of environmental policy are translated into regional management decisions; identification of gaps between the formulated national priorities and their implementation procedures in specific industrial regions of Russia and Kazakhstan. The best practices for implementing environmental policy priorities at the national and regional levels are compared. In the nineteenth century, the production of small arms underwent significant technological change. Faced with new needs, both qualitative and quantitative, governments began to pursue the modernization of production processes through mechanization and vertical integration. These technological advances, chief of which was the American System of Manufacturing developed in US arsenals, had a significant impact on the long-established European gun-making districts, where craft producers had to deal with disturbances and crises. The study focuses on the Italian district and the key factors in its resilience, with a contextual, comparative analysis within a broader framework comprising the UK and Spain. The research demonstrates that public authorities and factories can play a crucial role in determining change and resilience in industrial districts.

El descenso del sector industrial en la economía de la Comunitat Valenciana durante las dos últimas décadas ha sido muy acusado, ya que pasó del 25% del VAB en 1995 a menos del 17% en 2013. Este declive se explica por los cambios estructurales que tuvo que afrontar con la llegada del nuevo milenio para adaptarse a los nuevos patrones de producción y consumo propios de la globalización, que se vieron agravados por la crisis financiera de 2007. A partir de un enfoque por sectores y, a la vez, por territorios, se lleva a cabo un análisis de la evolución reciente de la industria valenciana. Se aprecia que, después de lustros de caída, desde 2012 hacia aquí el sistema fabril valenciano ha mostrado una fuerte resiliencia que permite pensar en un futuro escenario industrial más positivo., The decline of the weight of industry in the economy of the region of Valencia during the last two decades has been severe, falling from 25% of the gross value added in 1995 to less than 17% in 2013. This decline is explained by the structural changes that Valencian industry has faced over the last two decades in adapting to new globalised patterns of production and consumption. This process was aggravated by the financial crisis of 2007. Based on a sectorial and territorial approach, we have carried out an analysis of the recent evolution of Valencian industry. It is observed how the predominant model of Valencian industry is still the endogenous industrial district, although multinational companies are increasingly present, especially in cities. After decades of decline, from 2012 onwards the Valencian manufacturing sector has shown a strong resilience that enables optimism about a positive industrial future for this region.

Purpose – This paper aims to know the dimension and scope that research on the district effect has had in the literature about industrial districts, as well as to shed some light on the connection between industrial districts and business results; or expressed differently, on how being located in an industrial district or not affects or might influence the performance of the firms located therein. Design/methodology/approach – The purpose of this paper has been achieved through an exhaustive review of the empirical literature dedicated to the so-called district effect. The papers selected in the analysis were selected on the basis of the following criteria: (1) publications in scientific journals; (2) studies carried out in Spain and Italy; and (3) works published between 1994 and 2017. Findings – The outcome of the literature review suggests, on the one hand, that the debate on the extent to which the territory influences the competitiveness of firms located in industrial districts still remains a topic of great interest. It can additionally be observed that most of the works dedicated to measuring the district effect have done so using three dimensions: (1) productivity/efficiency; (2) international competitiveness; and (3) innovation. Practical implications – From a theoretical perspective, the findings of this paper make it possible to carry out an integrating proposal for the measurement of the district effect which revolves around three dimensions (productivity/efficiency; international competitiveness; and innovation). Originality/value – This paper makes a twofold contribution to the literature: (i) it brings together the most important empirical contributions that measure the competitive advantages obtained by firms located in industrial districts through the district effect; and (ii) it theoretically and empirically establishes the essential dimensions of that effect.

El presente trabajo es el resultado de la primera parte de una investigación en curso sobre los rasgos característicos del distrito manufacturero ecuatoriano, usando como marco analítico de referencia el esquema teórico de matriz marshalliana-becattiniana. En este artículo se analiza el sector del cuero de Cotacachi (provincia de Imbabura, Ecuador), con el fin de conocer su contribución al desarrollo socioeconómico del territorio y determinar si puede ser considerado un distrito industrial en el sentido marshalliano-becattiniano. A través de métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos se propone un ejercicio de lectura del caso de Cotacachi en base al esquema teórico del distrito industrial italiano, sistematizado sobre la experiencia de Prato (Italia). La principal conclusión es que el sector del cuero de Cotacachi se encuentra aún en un estado de desarrollo embrionario del modelo de distrito industrial de Marshall-Becattini, donde no existe una “atmósfera industrial” que permita una “eficiencia colectiva” atada a procesos de innovación. La presencia de microrredes a su interior, que en potencia pueden generar un “efecto distrito” como en el caso de Prato, choca con un panorama casi ausente de iniciativas de subcontratación, donde no existen articulación entre actores productivos ni relaciones entre empresas (sino sólo en las microrredes) y falta un apoyo institucional adecuado; elementos, éstos, que limitan su potencial de desarrollo., The present work is the first part of an ongoing investigation into the characteristic features of an Ecuadorian manufacturing district, using the Marshallian-Becattinian theoretical scheme as a reference framework. This article analyses the leather sector of Cotacachi (Province of Imbabura, Ecuador) to establish its contribution to the socioeconomic development of the territory, and determine if it can be considered an industrial district in Marshallian-Becattinian terms. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, an examination of its socioeconomic characteristics is offered with respect to the theoretical scheme of an Italian industrial district, based on the experience of Prato (Italy). The main conclusion is that the leather sector of Cotacachi is still in a state of embryonic development as an industrial district in the theoretical scheme of Marshall-Becattini. This is because there is no ‘industrial atmosphere’ that enables a ‘collective efficiency’ connected to innovative processes. The presence of micro-networks in its interior, which can potentially generate a ‘district effect’ as in the case of Prato, clashes with an almost complete absence of subcontracting initiatives, with no articulation between productive actors, nor relationships between companies (except for micro-networks), and a lack of adequate institutional support. The absence of these elements limits the development potential of the district.

In the city of Alcoi, the anarchist union took control over more than 100 textile family firms, going through a rationalization process which unified the production of all textile firms overcoming a previous production crisis and attending the war demand. Does the Alcoi case during the Civil War prove the possibility of a successful anarchist business organization? This article tries to understand the development of business without a capitalist organization and the role of business networks in such a development. The organizational design and the administration of the collectivization process is an example of how socialization of the property and democratization of the decision-making process in the company were not opposed with rationality and efficiency, at least during a war context., Durante la Guerra Civil Española, en el lado republicano, estalló una revolución social, liderada por los trabajadores y sus sindicatos que terminó en muchos lugares en un proceso de colectivización empresarial. The aim of this study is to reconstruct and reinterpret the roots and evolution of the Italian gun-making district. Focusing on the phases that preceded the postwar development, the intention is to analyze the multiple key social and economic factors that crucially influenced the evolutionary process of the local production system. The case study is considered in a long-term perspective and its characterizing evolutionary factors are analyzed in the light of contributions by economic historians on the origins and developments of industrial districts.

Italy’s industrial districts of the Northeast are often cited as beings models of success due to their economic organisation, thus they have almost become an archetypal myth. One of the reasons for the Northeastern firms’ success is proximity (both geographical and relational), particularly with regard to the creation and development of the districts and their innovative and competitive capacity on a global scale. Our research compares the structures of proximity in Montebelluna, an industrial district in Northeast Italy, with Timisoara (in Romania), which has been one of the more favoured areas of delocalisation for Veneto firms. This comparison made it possible to focus on the non-economic categories (such as trust, face-to-face relations, cooperative attitudes, local context…) that have contributed to a large part of their success, although, in reality, they are often overvalued. Above all, the analysis reveals how these Italian industrial districts have concealed an unequal distribution of power, not only inside the firms and between the firms, but also between the firms and their delocalised territories. Today the “Northeast” model is questioned and debated; however a rethinking of regional dynamics is only possible if these hidden dimensions of district development are taken into consideration., Los distritos industriales del noreste italiano son considerados frecuentemente como modelos de éxito por su organización económica y por eso se han vuelto casi un mito arquetípico. Una de las razones de este éxito es la proximidad (sea geográfica que relacional), particularmente en lo que respecta a la creación y desarrollo de los distritos y a sus capacidades de innovación y competitividad global. Esta investigación compara Montebelluna, un distrito en el noreste italiano, con Timisoara (Romania) que ha sido una de las áreas de deslocalización preferidas de las firmas vénetas. Esta comparación ha permitido centrar la atención en las categorías no económicas (como la confianza, las relaciones cara a cara, las actitudes cooperativas y el contexto local...) que han contribuido a su éxito, pero que en realidad son a menudo sobrevalorados. This research applies Nelson’s (1993) primary typology of enterprises to understand why the propensity for innovation varies across ceramics district innovation systems in Europe. We use innovation systems and industrial district theories to explore the innovation capacity of the two most important ceramic tile industrial districts in Europe—Emilia Romagna in Italy and Castellon in Spain. Our analysis shows that, in both districts, innovation plays a decisive role in allowing companies to maintain competitiveness in a globalizing market. However, by comparing the composition of their district innovation systems, our analysis shows that: (i) although levels of competition in both districts are similar, cooperation is stronger in Italy; (ii) scarce technology and advanced service providers in Spain make it predominantly a follower in the adoption of innovation; (iii) higher innovation intensity in Italy is due to diffusion of technology from firms in neighbouring districts specialized in other industry sectors. Our analysis shows that, in both districts, innovation plays a decisive role in allowing companies to maintain competitiveness in a globalizing market. However, by comparing the composition of their district innovation systems, our analysis shows that: (i) although levels of competition in both districts are similar, cooperation is stronger in Italy; (ii) scarce technology and advanced service providers in Spain make it predominantly a follower in the adoption of innovation; (iii) higher innovation intensity in Italy is due to diffusion of technology from firms in neighbouring districts specialized in other industry sectors. We provide strong evidence indicating that differences in the industry mix shape both national and district innovation systems., Esta investigación aplica la tipología de empresas de Nelson (1993) para entender por qué la propensión a la innovación varía entre los sistemas de innovación de distritos cerámicos en Europa. Usamos las teorías de sistemas de innovación y distritos industriales para explicar la capacidad de innovar de dos de los distritos industriales de producción de baldosas cerámicas en Europa: Emilia Romagna en Italia y Castellón en España. Nuestro análisis mostró que en ambos distritos la innovación juega un papel determinante para permitir a las empresas mantener la competitividad en un mercado cada vez más globalizado. Sin embargo, al comparar la estructura de sus sistemas de innovación, nuestra investigación comprobó que: (i) aunque los niveles de competencia en ambos distritos son similares, la cooperación es más fuerte en Italia; (ii) la escasez de tecnología y proveedores de servicios avanzados en España hacen que este país sea predominantemente un seguidor en la adopción de innovaciones; y (iii) la mayor intensidad de innovación en Italia se debe a la difusión de tecnología desde firmas en distritos vecinos especializadas en otros sectores industriales. Finalmente, proporcionamos evidencia sólida que indica que las diferencias en la composición de la industria dan forma a los sistemas de innovación, tanto nacionales como distritales.

In this work, we apply a systemic approach to the analysis of a particular geographic territory, the industrial district. We are particularly interested in analysing the interaction between the productive-technological environment and the scientific environment by an examination of research contracts and patents. Our analysis shows that R&D activity in the Spanish ceramic tile District Innovation System was mainly conducted by suppliers. Final producers’ innovation efforts were related to non-technological aspects and differentiation.

The industrial fabric of the province of Alicante has long been made up of various types of agglomerations of companies, including local productive systems, industrial districts and clusters. These enterprise systems are currently facing challenges to their competitiveness brought about by global markets and transformations in technology and production. In this paper we analyze the transformation processes introduced by businesses in the footwear components industry and the importance of the Regional Innovation System in the recent economic context. We demonstrate how companies in the footwear sector have sought various alternatives, especially innovation strategies, internationalization, diversification towards different productive sectors, and specialization in different market segments. We also analyze the role of the Regional Innovation System of the Valencian Community (Spain) (e.g. the Chamber of Commerce, technological institutes, universities and innovation policies) in these transformation processes., El tejido industrial de la provincia de Alicante ha sido y es un escenario de aglomeraciones de empresas denominadas de diferentes formas como sistemas productivos locales, distritos industriales, clústeres, etc. Estos sistemas empresariales se enfrentan a transformaciones tecnológicas, productivas y a mercados globalizados que plantean retos a su competitividad. En nuestro estudio analizamos los procesos de transformación que han protagonizado las empresas del sector de componentes del calzado y la importancia del Sistema Regional de Innovación ante el reciente contexto económico. Mostramos como las empresas del sector han seguido distintas alternativas destacando las estrategias de innovación, internacionalización, diversificación hacia distintos sectores productivos, y especialización en segmentos del mercado. After some brief notes on the need and the intended scope from a multidisciplinary approach (Regional Science, Economic Geography, Sociology and Business Management), we argue why the knowledge of the context is increasingly relevant for competing successfully in the global marketplace, since context-firm’s strategy is a two-way relationship. Cooperative efforts in the forms of clusters, industrial districts or agglomerations can spontaneously arise from a dense population of firms belonging to multiple industries or to the same and related industries along with public actors, or they can be a deliberative, planned and managed effort, which will require the intervention of a governance mode. Whatever the choice is, the result is not always the same. Accordingly, and in light of the pervading differences found across literature and papers presented in this Special Issue, it seems plausible that clustering can be idiosyncratic to the location. Further efforts should be devoted to find contingent recipes for fostering competitiveness in light of the context and the firms collaborating. At the end, we introduce the nine papers of this Special Issue, while encourage scholars to continue this academic conversation., Este artículo abre el Número Especial sobre "Clusters, Distritos Industriales y Estrategia", y está basado en el debate y comentarios recogidos durante la celebración del Congreso Clustering-2016. In recent decades, industrial districts (ID) have experienced intense delocalisation to low-cost countries, with implications for IDs’ internal structure. Recent studies, however, highlight the advantages of relocalising manufacturing in home countries. This paper investigates ID firms’ production-location strategies and backshoring decisions. The results from a survey of 259 firms in eight Italian IDs show that firms that delocalise production do not change their strategies over time and make limited recourse to backshoring. ID production is still important to guarantee product quality and access to specialised know-how.

Starting from the literature on inter-firm networks and embracing the industrial district perspective for what concerns innovation and knowledge spillovers, the paper investigates the determinants of inter-firm networks by exploring the geographical and industrial specialization profiles of network members and the role of innovation. The empirical analysis is based on two strategies: firstly, is analysed the impact over the firm’s performance of being a member of a network. This part is based on a panel data of 4,033 Italian firms for the period 2011-2015. Secondly, with a cross-section analysis for the year 2013, are measured the different effects of network determinants for interfirm network’s performance. From the estimates, we find that belonging to an inter-firm network have a positive impact on firms’ profitability, and having a district firms in the network and being internationally oriented (rather than innovation) are two key features of these new agreements.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discuss the changes of the Italian textile district of Prato, considered an exemplary case of the industrial district (ID) model, using a business network perspective. The "Black Swan" metaphor is used to address the changes in the Prato textile district in order to understand whether such changes have been an unexpected and unpredictable phenomenon, or they can be explain with a different theoretical tool-box, namely, that developed by the industrial network approach. Design/methodology/approach - The paper utilizes already published studies on the changes of the textile/fashion companies located to the Prato area. Both studies that have been carried out within an ID approach and those carried out with an Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) point of departure are considered in the research. Both types of studies were utilized to identify empirical observed changes of the producer, respectively user setting that the Prato located companies was related to, including identification of changes affecting both the local setting and the larger network it was related to. Findings - The utilization of the IMP model proposes a learning ground that exceed the local context and open ups of investigations of opportunities and threats stemming from interactions across spatial borders. Analysed from an interactive point of view, in the specific context of Prato, the exploitation of the opportunities given by establishing relationship between natives and migrants actors goes through the creation of interactions among actors representing specific resource combinations and activity structures - within and outside the local community. Originality/value - The paper concerns how the same research object - the changes of the Prato district - appears from another perspective different from the ID theory, namely, the industrial network approach developed by scholars of the IMP Group.

Beyond focusing on foundational works in the past, this approach shifts the focus away from the practice of analysing co-citations and seminal contributions to one of looking at current and emerging trends in the literature. Using the ISI Web of Knowledge (Web of Science) as a database, an examination of two samples of 3955 and 2419 articles is made. Results reveal the existence of sub-fields of inquiry that follow their own particular research agendas, which remain distinct yet interconnected to one another.

[EN] Literature on clusters has evolved over time, together with different approaches where they have been used. However, there was not a quantitative analysis of the current state of that evolution. In this research project, a methodology based on bibliometric analysis has been used; this methodology is called "bibliographic coupling", and is based on the identification and quantification of common references mentioned in the documents under study. This has allowed us to identify and explain the most relevant approaches in which the concepts of cluster and industrial district were used in 2013. One of the most common demands shown in this literature, or in the approaches analyzed, such as Evolutionary Economic Geography, is the need for more cases of evolutionary (or dynamic) analysis of the study of clusters or industrial districts. Since present literature lacks an evolutionary analysis of Spanish cluster through its patents, in this research project the cluster toy-plastic of "Foia de Castalla" is analysed. This analysis is based on knowledge of the cluster environment, the development of those companies which it is made of and the evolution of skills and capabilities for the analysis of its patents; their patterns and processes of innovation will be better known, providing, thus, literature with a new analysis on the evolution of clusters. Therefore, this doctoral thesis contributes to the literature on clusters evolution with two elements; firstly a case of evolutionary analysis based on patents and secondly a quantitative procedure, "bibliographic coupling", applied to this literature; the main approaches or lines of research in this area being, thus, identified., [ES] La literatura sobre los clusters ha ido evolucionando a lo largo del tiempo y de distintos enfoques que los han ido utilizando, sin embargo no existía un análisis cuantitativo de la situación actual de dicha evolución. En el presente trabajo de investigación se ha utilizado una metodología mediante el análisis bibliométrico denominado "apareo bibliográfico", basada en la identificación y cuantificación de las referencias bibliográficas comunes citadas por los documentos objeto de estudio, que nos ha permitido señalar y explicar los enfoques más relevantes que utilizan los conceptos de cluster y distrito industrial en el año 2013. Una de las demandas más extendida, dentro de esta literatura o por ejemplo de los enfoques detectados como es el caso de la Geografía Económica Evolutiva, es la necesidad de más casos de análisis evolutivos (o dinámicos) para el estudio de los clusters o distritos industriales. Dado que no existen en la literatura actual ningún caso de cluster español analizado evolutivamente a través de sus patentes, en el presente trabajo de investigación se ha analizado desde dicha perspectiva el cluster del juguete-plástico de la Foia de Castalla, dicho análisis está basado en el conocimiento del entorno del cluster, el desarrollo de las empresas que lo forman y la evolución de sus habilidades y capacidades por el análisis de sus patentes, para conocer mejor sus patrones y procesos de innovación. Aportando así un nuevo caso de análisis a la literatura sobre la evolución de los clusters. [ES] En las últimas décadas muchos autores han centrado su interés en el concepto de distrito industrial, configuración alternativa al modelo de gran empresa que soporta actualmente una gran presión competitiva debido a los fenómenos de globalización. La presente investigación estudia la evolución de la configuración interna de los distritos industriales, en particular lo referido a la dispersión del tamaño de las empresas localizadas dentro y fuera de estas aglomeraciones territoriales. Mediante un estudio exploratorio basado en el uso de fuentes secundarias de información y a partir de una medida de dispersión dimensional de las empresas como indicador del grado de homogeneidad interna, se analiza una muestra de 120 distritos industriales españoles con un total de 12.293 empresas para el período 1997-2009. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren una variabilidad interna cada vez mayor en las características estructurales de las empresas de los distritos, en donde las pequeñas y medianas empresas tienden a ser cada vez más pequeñas, mientras que las grandes están aumentando su tamaño para ajustarse al nuevo entorno competitivo. Del mismo modo, los niveles de homogeneidad permanecen más estables en empresas de fuera del distrito. Estos resultados pueden cuestionar algunas de las premisas de la literatura tradicional sobre distritos industriales., [EN] In recent decades many authors have paid particular attention to the concept of industrial district, an alternative configuration of the model of large company that is currently supporting a huge competitive pressure due to the phenomenon of globalization. This research studies the evolution of the internal configuration of the industrial districts, particularly in what refers to the size dispersion of the companies located inside and outside of these territorial agglomerations. Through an explorative study based on secondary information sources and by means of the use of a measure of firms’ dimensional dispersion as an indicator of the degree of internal homogeneity, a sample of 120 Spanish industrial districts with a total of 12.293 companies for the period 1997-2009 has been analyzed. Findings suggest a growing internal variability in the structural characteristics of companies in industrial districts in which small and medium sized companies are tending to be smaller while large companies are increasing their size to fit the new competitive environment. Also, levels of homogeneity are remaining more stable in non-district companies. These results can question some of the premises of the traditional literature on industrial districts.

The studies of Giacomo Becattini concerning the notion of the «Marshallian industrial district» have led a revolution in the field of economic development around the world. The paper offers an interpretation of the methodology adopted by Becattini. The roots are clearly Marshallian. Becattini proposes a return to the economy as a complex social science that operates in historical time. We adopt a Schumpeterian approach to the method in economic analysis in order to highlight the similarities between the Marshall and Becattini’s approach. Finally the paper uses the distinction between logical time, real time and historical time which enable us to study the «localized» economic process in a Becattinian way., Los estudios de Giacomo Becattini relativas a la noción de «distrito industrial marshalliano» han provocado una revolución en el campo del desarrollo económico en todo el mundo. En el documento se ofrece una interpretación de la metodología adoptada por Becattini. Las raíces son claramente marshallianas. Becattini propone un retorno a la economía como una ciencia social compleja que opera en el tiempo histórico. Adoptamos un enfoque schumpeteriano al método de análisis económico con el fin de poner de relieve las similitudes entre el enfoque de Marshall el de Becattini. Por último, el trabajo utiliza la distinción entre tiempo lógico, tiempo real y tiempo histórico que nos permite estudiar el proceso econó- mico «localizado» de una manera Becattiniana.

El tópico discutido en este artículo es cuál debería ser el marco conceptual adecuado para analizar los fenómenos productivos. La causa para reflexionar sobre este tópico deriva de la propuesta hecha por algunos investigadores del Banco de Italia (Alampi et al., 2013) de recurrir al concepto de «geo-sectorialidad productiva», i.e. una clasificación mixta, geográfica y sectorial, de los procesos productivos. El autor propone un cambio de enfoque, sosteniendo que el punto de partida para el análisis debería ser el supuesto de que cada lugar —definido por sus condiciones naturales y el devenir de su historia— tiene su propio grado de «coralidad productiva» en cada momento dado. La coralidad productiva no se basa meramente en la proximidad técnica, espacial y cultural de las empresas, sino también y más importante se basa en la homogeneidad y congruencia cultural de todos los habitantes de este lugar, que contribuyen, positiva o negativamente, a la producción local., This article discusses the question of what should be the proper conceptual framework for analysing productive phenomena. The cause for reflection on this topic stems from a proposal made by researchers from the Bank of Italy (Alampi et al., 2013) to analyse productive phenomena through the lens of an integrated geographical and sectorial perspective. The author proposes a reversal of the approach, arguing that the starting point for analysis should be the assumption that every place — as defined by a combination of natural conditions and the outcome of history — has at any given time a specific «productive chorality». This productive chorality is not merely derived from the technical, spatial, and cultural proximity of businesses, but also, and more importantly, from the cultural homogeneity and congruity of all the inhabitants of that place, who contribute, positively or negatively, to local production.

The aim of this paper is to critically consider how the concept of «industrial district» was born and evolved in the field of regional science. Despite the claim by Isard that the emergence of a spatial dimension in economics was being hampered by Marshall’s alleged prioritising of time over space (Isard, 1956), the concept of «localization economies» introduced into regional science by Ohlin, Hoover and Isard clearly is itself a legacy from Marshall. This contradiction in the work of Isard and others followed to a large extent from the way in which Marshallian concepts were historically situated in economic thought before Giacomo Becattini’s re-reading of Marshall and his ideas. Sin embargo, conceptos como los de economías de localización, también introducidos en la Ciencia Regional por Ohlin, Hoover e Isard, son, evidentemente —aunque no se especifique—, un legado marshalliano. Marble quarries in Macael have been exploited since ancient times but its complex industrial district had to wait till the fifties to emerge. This industrial district includes extraction, processing and marketing activities. In the 1980s some development programmes were designed in order to modernize and boost the marble sector. Since then, it has become an international reference for ornamental stones. The sector has undergone a great transformation: from being a mining agglomeration to become an industrial district. This shift has provided the district with a great dynamism and resilience. Moreover, its competition position has considerably changed. It used to be based on comparative advantages but nowadays it is based on competitive advantages. In its heart a nodal enterprise Cosentino has emerged, which has become an international leader on a global scale., Las canteras de mármol de Macael han sido explotadas desde la antigüedad, pero no es hasta mediados del siglo pasado cuando comienza a formarse un complejo industrial que engloba a la extracción, la transformación y la comercialización. The first paper (Becattini, 1979) conceptualizes the industrial district as a «unit of investigation», while the second (Becattini, 1989) conceptualizes the industrial district as a «model of production». Between the two papers there is a mutual dependence. The industrial district as a «model of production» deprived of the industrial district as a «unit of investigation» loses its originality as a way of interpreting economic change and becomes merely «one type of a cluster». La coralidad productiva no se basa meramente en la proximidad técnica, espacial y cultural de las empresas, sino también y más importante se basa en la homogeneidad y congruencia cultural de todos los habitantes de este lugar, que contribuyen, positiva o negativamente, a la producción local., This article discusses the question of what should be the proper conceptual framework for analysing productive phenomena. The cause for reflection on this topic stems from a proposal made by researchers from the Bank of Italy (Alampi et al., 2013) to analyse productive phenomena through the lens of an integrated geographical and sectorial perspective. The author proposes a reversal of the approach, arguing that the starting point for analysis should be the assumption that every place — as defined by a combination of natural conditions and the outcome of history — has at any given time a specific «productive chorality». This productive chorality is not merely derived from the technical, spatial, and cultural proximity of businesses, but also, and more importantly, from the cultural homogeneity and congruity of all the inhabitants of that place, who contribute, positively or negatively, to local production.

The aim of this paper is to critically consider how the concept of «industrial district» was born and evolved in the field of regional science. Despite the claim by Isard that the emergence of a spatial dimension in economics was being hampered by Marshall’s alleged prioritising of time over space (Isard, 1956), the concept of «localization economies» introduced into regional science by Ohlin, Hoover and Isard clearly is itself a legacy from Marshall.
