2. The Representation of Diverse Jewish Constituencies within the Australian Jewish Community

- Abstract
The problem of political and cultural under-representation of Australia’s vibrant and diverse Jewish constituencies by its governing Jewish organisations is a long-standing and vexing one. There appears to be a chasm between perceptions of how the established Jewish organisations represent their internal diversity and how minority Jewish communities wish to be represented. Formal under-representation of minorities and marginalised groups – of not having their interests statistically represented and included in these bodies regardless of the formal composition of the established bodies – is a critical issue. This thesis aims to establish how Jewish peak and roof bodies, media, and arts organisations currently represent their constituencies’ political and cultural diversity in Sydney and Melbourne. It seeks to explore how minority Jewish constituencies might be better represented within and by their community. The thesis has two research aims. The first is to understand whether diverse minority and marginalised Jewish communities are fairly represented on boards of governing Jewish institutions, and by arts and media organisations. The second aim is to establish how these diverse groups prefer to be represented and to suggest ways to achieve this.

- Abstract
This profile focuses on Weber and Davis counties, a multi-county area within the Greater Salt Lake region. While the Greater Salt Lake region accounts for 90.3% of Utah's economy, these two counties account for 13.9% of Utah's economy. While the Greater Salt Lake Region and Utah's other five economic regions are organized by local commuting patterns and other measures of economic connection, analyzing Weber and Davis counties together along county boundaries simply helps decision-makers with stakeholder interests in these two counties to better understand the area's economic and demographic profile. While there is a degree of economic connection between Weber and Davis counties, that is not the motivating force behind their grouping for this profile.

- Abstract
During the turbulent period following the First World War, Dutch photographer Frank Scholten (1881-1942) travelled to Palestine with the aim of producing an ‘illustrated Bible'. He arrived in Palestine in 1921, ultimately staying for two years, documenting Palestine as the British Mandate was formally being established. Contrarily to many other European photographers portraying Orientalist inspirations, Franck Scholten photographed daily life through the various confessional and ethnic communities, social classes, cities and landscapes of Palestine. This book revisits the recently released Scholten photographic collection on Palestine by presenting different Christian communities, their diversity, and the changes they faced, along with Muslim and Jewish populations, in early 1920s Palestine.

- Abstract
Libraries have been accredited as knowledge and power centers, spanning social, economic, and educational divides. In the context of Indian society, libraries are assumed to be helpful in uplifting the weaker sections of the society, particularly Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Minority Communities (Kalyani, 2021). This is because these marginalized groups are bound to encounter systematic problems, such as deficiencies in quality education, information, and opportunities (Rao, 2020). They are centers for learning and development, literature, and thought that are open to the public with welcome and comradery for all. This source provides a way of accessing works, electronically based information, and training that is suitable for these populations (Nayar, 2019). For instance, the Digital Library program for the Marginalized has indeed helped reach out to tribals and others in far-flung areas. It has increased the availability of educational material in regional languages (Kumar, 2018). Likewise, the specialized library programs in the urban slum and rural areas involving SC and minority communities included skill enhancement, awareness, career, and vocational training (SET) workshops, employment workshops, women’s development, empowerment, and more. This has enhanced literacy levels, employment, and socioeconomic status for the people. Thus, by equalizing access to knowledge and information, libraries significantly transform the social setting by serving the ‘weaker’ sections of society and facilitating the development of the country and society in general (Bhatt, 2022). This abstract intends to focus on Libraries and their role in uplifting such sections of society in India, particularly concerning literacy, online access, and social justice. The full paper will provide more details on these themes as it will describe some of the ongoing practices in detail, examine current efforts, and provide strategic suggestions to enhance libraries impacting

9. Connecticut School Desegregation Collection.
- Abstract
The Connecticut School Desegregation Collection consisits of materials related to the legal issues surrounding school desegregation in Hartford and Bridgeport, Connecticut. The collection provides an overview of the regional and national concerns in the area of desegregation, and two court cases that fought to bring an end to school segregation and discrimination., The issue of desegregation of Connecticut's schools became a legal one in 1975 and continues today. The collection provides an overview of regional and national concerns in the area of desegregation. In 1989 Milo Sheff, a ten year old fourth grader from Hartford, CT, joined with seventeen other school children to file a lawsuit against the state of Connecticut, and Governor William O'Neill. Alledging that their constitutional rights to a public education and their rights to equal protection under the law were being violated, they called for the state to change its existing policy on educational equality. The case was originally argued in Hartford Superior Court, and was ruled in favor of the state and the governor. The judge ruled that school officials were not obligated to correct educational inequalities, no matter how they may have come to transpire. Following the finding by the Superior Court, the case was appealed to the Connecticut Supreme Court. In 1996 the superior court overruled the lower court's ruling, stating that the state did in fact have an obligation to provide Connecticut's school children with equal educational opportunities. It also ruled that children had a constitutional right to a public education, one that could not be altered based on ethnic or racial background. The debate surrounding Bridgeport's public school desegregation began in the 1970s and continued throughout the 1980s. In November 1975 the NAACP, the Spanish American Coalition (SAC), a group of community organizations, and individual black and hispanic parents filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the Bridgeport Board of Education, and the Connecticut State Board of Education. In 1978 the Mayor, Comptroller, and Board of Appointment and Taxation were added as defendants. The lawsuit was filed because the plaintiffs believed the Board of Education had created a dual school system, discriminating against black and hispanic students., The collection contains legal files, documents, reports, studies, correspondence, publications, conference proceedings, papers and similar materials pertaining to two lawsuits concerning the desegregation of Connecticut's public schools. Series I contains materials related to Connecticut's Sheff volume O'Neill case, 1965-1994, and contains documents issued by state agencies, educational associations and the city of Hartford, as well as reports from academic institutions. Also included is a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of the documents compiled by David R. Gilmore. The exhibits have been arranged chronologically and assigned a file number, which is cross-referenced in the bibliography. Series II is comprised of the Bridgeport School Desegregation Files (undated, 1972-1983). The series contains publications, papers and conference proceedings collected in connection with the desegregation of the Bridgeport public schools. Also included in the series are reference materials related to school desegregation cases in other American cities. The type of materials in the series are similar in nature to those in Series I and therefore have also been arranged chronologically by publication date., Series I: Sheff volume O'Neill (1965-1994) contains documents issued by state agencies, educational associations and the city of Hartford, as well as reports from academic institutions. The exhibits have been arranged chronologically and assigned a file number, which is cross-referenced in the bibliography. 10. Connecticut Commission on Civil Rights Collection.
- Abstract
Collection consist of pamphlets collected by the Connecticut Commission on Civil Rights, previously known as the Connecticut Inter-Racial Commission. Pamphlets were arranged and distributed to state offices as reference material regarding the Commission's approach, advancement and related issues toward Civil Rights. Material also includes bulletins and pamphlets issued by the Commission as statements on legislation and federal agendas relating to Civil Rights., Pamphlets originally organized in a resource binder as reference materials and deposted at the University of Connecticut's Government Records Department. Current arrangement is based on pre-existing arrangement established by the Records Department., In 1943, under recommendation of the Governor of Connecticut and by mandate of the General Assembly, the state appointed the Inter-racial Commission to establish a program for overcoming discrimination and prejudice in the state. The Commission was composed of ten Governor-appointed citizens to serve five year terms. By statute of the General Assembly in 1951, the agency was renamed the Commission on Civil Rights. This renamed entity established the following as the guiding obligations and principles: (1) to aid in overcoming prejudice through education; (2) to assist public and private organizations in their attempts to develop harmonious integroup relations; (3) to compile facts concerning discrimination in employment, violation of civil liberties and other related matters and to report the results of its investigations to the governor; (4) to investigate instances of discrimination which may come to its attention; (5) in certain specified areas such as employment, public accomodations and public housing, to correct such discriminatory acts through conciliation or legal sanctions and (6) to submit to the Governor its recommendations for the removal of such injustices as it may find to exist. - Abstract
This final report documents the activities conducted during this grant. The original intent of the grant was to organize and hold a student leadership summit associated with the Missouri Valley District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. In the event, the COVID pandemic restrictions put in place by many universities from 2020 to 2022 required a change in how these plans were implemented. As students at many universities remained unable to travel to official functions due to social distancing restrictions held in place by many universities across the country, it was decided to instead send transportation students from the University of Kansas to transportation-oriented conferences to expand their knowledge of current technical topics.

- Abstract
Background: Environmental noise has detrimental effects on various health outcomes. Although disparities in some environmental exposures (e.g., air pollution) are well-documented, there is still a limited and uncertain understanding of the extent to which specific populations are disproportionately burdened by noise. Aim: To assess whether environmental noise levels are associated with demographic and socioeconomic neighborhood compositions. Methods: We cross-sectionally examined long-term noise levels for 9,372 neighborhoods in the Netherlands. We linked these noise levels with administrative data on neighborhood characteristics for the year 2021. Linear and non-linear spatial regression models were fitted to explore the associations between noise, demographic, and socioeconomic neighborhood characteristics. Results: Our results showed that 46 % of the neighborhoods exhibited noise levels surpassing the recommended threshold of 53 dB to prevent adverse health effects. The regressions uncovered positive and partially non-linear neighborhood-level associations between noise and non-Western migrants, employment rates, low-incomers, and address density. Conversely, we found negative associations with higher-educated neighborhoods and those with a greater proportion of younger residents. Neighborhoods with older populations displayed a U-shaped association. Conclusions: This national study showed an inequality in the noise burden, adversely affecting vulnerable, marginalized, and less privileged neighborhoods. Addressing the uneven distribution of noise and its root causes is an urgent policy imperative for sustainable Dutch cities.

- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to advance psychological theory and research on attitudes and behavior towards low status minority groups by discussing group-level indispensability as an important yet largely unexplored factor in intergroup dynamics. Drawing on theory and international research from psychology and the social sciences, the distinction between functional indispensability and identity indispensability is first discussed. Subsequently various positive intergroup implications of perceived indispensability are considered, and for giving a balanced account possible negative outcomes are also discussed. Then, the minority perspective is considered and the question of when positive or negative intergroup implications of perceived indispensability are less or more likely. The paper concludes with future directions for theoretical and empirical development of the notion of group-level indispensability and its intergroup consequences in a range of settings and contexts.

This research study analyzes the representation of minorities, diversity and gender in Spanish cinema of the 21st century based on a content analysis carried out on 129 films and more than 3,000 characters. The data prove that characters belonging to minority groups are underrepresented and that there is a higher percentage of male than female characters. Minority characters, however, tend to have a slightly higher narrative weight. These observations differ according to the gender of the person who has directed the film and the release date, with women directors and more recent works tending to give more weight to non-majority characters., En este trabajo de investigación se analiza la representación de las minorías, la diversidad y el género en el cine español del siglo xxi a partir de un análisis de contenido realizado sobre 129 películas y más de 3.000 personajes. - Abstract
Anatolia at the end of the Ottoman Empire constituted a veritable melting pot of violently uprooted peoples from Eurasia, the Balkans, Levant, and the larger Middle East. Due to wars since the early decades of the 19th century, Anatolia became the destination point for millions of refugees, at times steered to the relatively safe confines of the Empire’s geographic core. Importantly, this relocation of refugees took place while these same state institutions busily expelled Armenian, Pontic Greek, and Kurdish others. The resulting mélange of humanity crossing different paths invariably informed several state-building programs during the late Ottoman and then post-Ottoman periods. The struggle to build a new society out of the rubble of the Ottoman Empire has received attention from the Turkish academy. Heralding the process as a success story equivalent to nation-building campaigns in Europe and North America, Turkish scholars and many Euro-American apologists of the Kemalism to which the process was first linked regularly pointed to Turkey’s resulting modernization. Rarely was this process considered in rural Anatolia, however, details Dr. Sezer offers in her short book. Sadly, it is difficult to dissociate Sezer’s work from the laudatory narratives customized by Turkish state-funded universities since the 1930s. As Sezer accesses rarely studied archival material on the heavy investment in settlement and economic development of Anatolia’s vast rural areas, she ends up offering a disappointing listing the delivery of “development” without a corresponding linking to a violence unlikely to formally register in official documents. This is perhaps because Sezer fails to engage a scholarship that foregrounds the violence accompanying modern state building in general and the unique conditions that required Turkey’s vulnerable state to specifically use force to realize a political elite’s goals. In Sezer’s hands, Ankara’s political masters’ building, through nationalism

- Abstract
No studies have been published on the Swedish Armed Forces´ (SAF) diversity regarding minorities with a foreign national background. The purpose of this pilot study is therefore to start the field by looking at how the SAF, or similar organisations, can work with diversity management effectively. This is done through seven interviews with the organisation´s employees, as well as interviewing ten persons in Sweden which are part of minority-groups with a foreign national background. Avery & McKay´s (2006) theory about attracting diversity was used as basis for the interview questions, especially regarding which recruitment tactics to use when attracting minorities. The results indicate that SAF are employing the correct tactics but that the lack of clear, definable, and measurable goals for the organisation impedes the effort. As well, SAF´s focus on diversity has so far mainly included gender equality which has led to a diminishing effort towards other diversity-dimensions. However, there is a great will in the organisation to improve the work towards the other dimensions. Also, even though the SAF is employing the correct tactics, the interviews with the respondents show that some tactics might be more necessary than others. Going forth, top priority should be targeted information through personal meetings in certain areas and locations which contain a higher concentration of minorities.

Aquest text ressegueix la seva biografia personal i intel·lectual per indicar els principals trets de com va interpretar i plantejar la història del país des d’una posició personal molt singular: el valor de les minories socials com a element director de la història col·lectiva., The role of historian of Ramon d’Abadal i de Vinyals, which begins in the second decade of the 20th century and extends for close to sixty years, is greatly conditioned by his political-ideological position, a great technical, erudite and intellectual capacity, and a very marked sense of national and social belonging. This text retraces his personal and intellectual biography to explain the main traits of how he interpreted and posed the history of the country from a very singular personal position: the value of social minorities as a leading element of the collective history.

- Abstract
Some theorists have traditionally argued that judicial review of legislation is legitimate because it protects the rights of minorities and marginalized groups against the faulty or malicious decisions of majorities. In this article, I argue that the ability of judges to protect minorities can only justify judicial review when specific normative and factual assumptions are met. Those assumptions include the existence of factors that increase the commitment of judges to minority rights, the malfunction of the majority decision-making process, and the little or no impact of judicial review on the capacity of the legislature to protect rights.

- Abstract
Language planners are increasingly aware of the importance of new speakers (individuals acquiring a language outside the home, typically later-on in life) for the revitalisation of minority languages. Yet, little is known about new speakers’ activation (the process by which they become active and habitual minority language users). This article presents a questionnaire-based investigation of new speakers’ (n = 264) use of West Frisian in Fryslân, Netherlands—and the role traditional speakers play in new speakers’ activation. Qualitative and quantitative data show that participants use West Frisian only rarely; and when they do use it, it is mainly in the classroom. Minority language interactions outside the classroom, with traditional speakers, consist mostly of a few tokenistic words or phrases. The findings show to what extent different behaviours by traditional speakers discourage and/or encourage new speakers’ minority language use, highlighting how the complex dynamics between the speaker groups are hindering revitalisation efforts. The article discusses the implications of these findings for language planning to promote the activation of new speakers, and thereby the revitalisation of West Frisian.

25. Minority Demographics and the Swedish Armed Forces : Pushing the Agenda Forward

For more than three decades, after the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Minorities, approved by consensus in 1992, by the Member States, a new melting pot of debates and decisions has undoubtedly been taking shape, which cannot be ignored overlooked around the defense of minority rights, particularly with regard to gender stereotypes. - Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze the community social structure of two councils of the region of Avila at the end of the 15th century. The study of taxpayer’s registers from Bonilla de la ierra and Olmedos ́s will allow us to verify that the differentiation process does not occur in a homogeneous way, even in two councils of the same region. Furthermore, we verify the phenomenon of differentiation is not exclusive to the rural world. Finally, we identify some of the characteristics of the village ́s upper strata.

Islam is a complete code of life that teaches equality and provides guidance in every aspect of life. In the religion of Islam, every person has basic rights and every person's basic rights are taken care of. However, no preference has been given to Arabs over foreigners, blacks over whites, whites over blacks, and no one has been given priority because of colour, race, language, caste, or profession, because Islam is a guide for all human beings. And it is a source of guidance. Where Islam has protected the rights of Muslims, it has also provided rights to other people living in Islamic societies who are followers of other religions or ideologies than Islam, since the number of these non-Muslims is less than that of Muslims. That is why they are also called minorities, but the term dhimmi is used for non-Muslims who live permanently in Islamic society, on the contrary, non-Muslims who temporarily came to Islamic society are called Mustamen. This research also focuses on this study will not only examine the rights of minorities in Islam especially in the light of the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) but also describe the relation of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) towards Non-Muslims. What kind of behavior did he adopt with the people of Madinah and what laws and terms did he implement regarding the minorities while establishing the state of Madinah?

- Abstract
Although the population of Finland has always been culturally and linguistically diverse, history education in Finland has nonetheless long excluded the history of its minorities and its colonial past. Instead, history education has portrayed Finland as a historically homogeneous nation-state. This article examines the representation of minorities in Finland and the portrayal of colonialism in 18 history textbooks used in Finnish basic education, written in both Finnish and Swedish. It uses discourse analysis to investigate how the selected history textbooks discuss minorities and colonialism within their texts. The study finds that there are significant differences between textbooks written in Finnish and Swedish, the latter including more information of, and critical perspectives on, minorities and colonialism. Nonetheless, many minority groups remain invisible in all the analysed textbooks. Finally, the textbooks, for their part, mainly associate colonialism with overseas activities and do not delve into Nordic colonialism in Sápmi.

- Abstract
Anti-Fascism and Ethnic Minorities explores how, and to what extent, fascist ultranationalism elicited an anti-fascist response among ethnic minority communities in Eastern and Central Europe. The edited volume analyses how identities related to class, ethnicity, gender and political ideologies were negotiated within and between minorities through confrontations with domestic and international fascism. By developing and expanding the study of Jewish anti-fascism and resistance to other minority responses, the book opens the field of anti-fascism studies for a broader comparative approach. The volume is thematically located in Central and Eastern Europe, cutting right across the continent from Finland in the North to Albania in the Southeast. The case studies in the 14 research chapters are divided into five thematic sections, dealing with the issues of (1) minorities in borderlands and cross-border anti-fascism, (2) minorities navigating the ideological squeeze between communism and fascism, (3) the role of intellectuals in the defence of minority rights, (4) the anti-fascist resistance against fascist and Nazi occupation during World War II, and (5) the conflictual role ascribed to ethnicity in post-war memory politics and com-memorations. The editors describe their intersectional approach to the analysis ofethnicity as a crucial category of analysis with regard to anti-fascist histories andmemories. The book offers scholars and students valuable historical and comparative per-spectives on minority studies, Jewish studies, borderland studies, and memory studies. It will appeal to those with an interest in the history of race and racism, fascism and anti-fascism, and Central and Eastern Europe.

- Abstract
The Republic of Turkey was born on 29 October 1923 as the final outcome of a very troubled historical process. The Muslims of Anatolia and Eastern Thrace had faced the risk of disintegration and submission. The father and leader of the “new Turkey”, Mustafa Kemal, felt the plurality that had characterized the Ottoman world as a source of weakness and danger. In these nearly 100 years Republican Turkey has scored many admirable accomplishments, but her genesis left a permanent imprint in the political and social development of the country. Thus, the Turkish State has perpetuated a suspicious and repressive attitude towards the particular identities. This book, stemmed from a conference held in November 2021, presents two introductive papers and six specific contributions where the issues of education and public discourse are among the main topics.

Federally recognized tribes are acknowledged by the U.S. government as sovereign entities by the U.S. constitution, treaties, legislation, executive orders and supreme court decisions. This sovereign status allows tribes to engage with federal and state partners on a government-to-government basis. Utah acknowledges this unique relationship with the 8 tribal nations located within its borders in both statute and executive order. Together the state and tribes seek to improve the health status of the American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) population in Utah.

- Abstract
in english In this master thesis we explore the lived experiences of nine female and gender minoritized DJs in the Copenhagen DJ-scene. By conducting semi-structured interviews exploring a wide variety of conditions and aspects of their work and passions, and focusing on their unique situated perspectives and knowledges, we investigate how the working conditions and structures of the DJ-industry affect female and gender minoritized DJs, and the ways in which their social categories, i.e. their gender, ethnicity and racial appearance, affect the ways they are met and perceived within the industry. We discuss their experiences by applying several theoretical concepts from race- and gender studies, i.a. intersectionality, minority taxation and othering-mechanisms. Our study shows that the female and gender minoritized DJs experience manifold complex ways of being othered, embodied, positioned and made visible by the industry and its agents because of their gender and social categories, which i.a. is a result of a general underrepresentation of female and gender minoritized DJs within the industry. These aspects limit the female and gender minoritized DJs in their activities by holding them back in their careers in multiple ways. Combined with the fact that DJs often work nights in party cultures where people often are intoxicated, these conditions create an unsafe work environment, which results in the DJs making detailed security measures for themselves. We identify several potentials for change within the industry. A deeper awareness of the limiting and biased structures combined with a more communicative praxis when presenting and welcoming DJs, i.e. informing staff and guests about the particularities of the DJs’ artistic style, pronouns and other aspects, could potentially prevent discrimination and misunderstandings and make being in the field a better and less discriminating experience for the DJs. Overall, the thesis shows that there is an overarch
