The Synchronous Reluctance machines have been increasingly popular during the past decades as they share advantages like simple and robust rotor structure, high efficiency, good torque capability and low cost. They are identified as the alternate to the induction machines. However, the power factor of Synchronous Reluctance machines appear lower than the induction machines. To solve the issue, this thesis is dedicated with the final aim of proposing a new solution to improve the SynRel motor performance including power factor, average torque and efficiency. To achieve the goal, the thesis is divided into three main steps. Firstly, a profound investigation on rib effects in Synchronous Reluctance machines is carried out to find a potential direction for enhanced motor performance. Then two traditional industrial design and optimization cases for higher efficiency are accomplished by adopting minimum rib thickness based on the previous rib investigation. Finally in the last step, a novel ribless rotor topology is proposed and it is proven that Synchronous Reluctance machine with such novel rotor is provided with advanced performance including higher average torque, power factor and efficiency compared to the conventional one and the results are validated experimentally.
