Purpose: Surveillance is becoming ever more present within the workplace prominently surfacing within the performance appraisal process, urging to investigate manifestations of Workplace Dignity within this process. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative case study approach was applied while the semi-structured interviews were analysed within a post-positivist paradigm, utilizing deductive coding. Findings: The investigations into the performance appraisal practices of a professional services company reveal the complexities and multifaceted relationship between particular aspects of performance management practices and Workplace Dignity. Aspects of digital monitoring and detailed performance measurement entailing characteristics of surveillance, can violate and threaten Workplace Dignity by disregarding contextual factors like holidays or sickness, which can lead to perceptions of manipulation and discrimination. However, the majority of practices connected to performance management protect and promote dignity, such as regular check-ins and development talks. These communicative interactions between managers and employees entail empathy and support towards the individual’s needs, professional ambitions and recognition of their contributions which promote Workplace Dignity Originality/value: This research provides actionable insight for affirmative practices within the performance management practices protecting and promoting Workplace Dignity., Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 2024
