La pintura es uno de los medios más fáciles y eficaces de crear la arquitectura en clave poética. Tal aserto se comprueba fácilmente en la producción pictórica italiana del Trecento y el Quattrocento. Estudiando las obras de la mayoría de los pintores italianos de esos dos siglos podemos descubrir al menos cinco formas de “ideación” poética del espacio urbano-arquitectónico: la “lógica” de la incongruencia; transparencias de la opacidad; fragmentos totalizadores; la ciudad como casa, la casa como ciudad; la ciudad como escenografía. Mediante el análisis de veintitrés cuadros de Duccio, Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti, Taddeo Gaddi, Lippo Vanni, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Uccello, Fra Filippo Lippi, Piero della Francesca, Benozzo Gozzoli, Botticelli y Perugino, pretendemos en este trabajo poner en luz esas cinco modalidades de invención simbólica de la arquitectura. [ABSTRACT] Painting is one of the easiest and most effective means of creating a poetic architecture. Such an assertion is easily verified in the Trecento and Quattrocento Italian painting. Studying the works of most of the Italian painters of these two centuries we can find at least five forms of poetic “idealization” of urban and architectural space: the “logic” of the incongruity; transparencies of the opacity; the fragment as a whole; the town as a house, the house as a town; the town as a scenic setting. Solidarische Stadtbewegungen greifen globale Problemlagen und damit einhergehende Fluchtbewegungen auf und explorieren Visionen für ein inklusives Zusammenleben. Dieser Beitrag gibt Einblick in Idee und Praxis von solidarischen Stadtbewegungen und reflektiert mögliche Beziehungen dieser Bewegungen und der Sozialen Arbeit im Rahmen von Popular Social Work.

As one of the most heavily bomb-damaged cities in Germany, with around 90% of its historic city centre destroyed, Nuremberg (Nürnberg) provides an excellent example to investigate the urban transformation of a post-war city. In this article, we bring together heterogeneous and under-researched data sets and archival material from the post-war period and convert urban features depicted in historic maps and scanned documents into digital geospatial data that is analyzed with a geographical information system. We combine morphological variables of townscape analysis to present three different transformations over time. First, using a damage map of Nuremberg from the Second World War, we examine the varying extent of bomb damage across the city at the detailed district level. Secondly, we focus on land-use units, comparing the pre-war spatial land-use distribution from 1940 with historical maps of land use/cover from 1956 and more recent land uses in 1969. Finally, using selected characteristics of urban form, we categorize pre-war and present-day urban block typologies to examine urban morphological change. In doing so, we contribute methodologically and substantively towards a new framework for the analysis of post-war cities. We demonstrate how geographical information systems can be utilized for historical research and the study of change in urban environments, presenting a map-based interpretation of the planning strategies to have guided post-war urban development in Nuremberg. Providing an alternative appraisal of post-war city transformation, our diachronic research offers insight into Nuremberg’s under-researched past, which is also of interest to planners and policymakers seeking to improve future cities.

Despite one of the fastest rates of economic growth among the European Union countries in 2010-2019, Poland did not experience any significant improvement in meeting the housing needs of less affluent households. The stock of municipal housing is characterised by low availability and a high degree of asset depreciation as well as growing rent arrears. In the face of the upcoming economic downturn caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, the implementation of municipal tasks in the field of housing will be further hindered. To prevent this, the authors present a number of recommendations for regulatory changes for local government units and central institutions that will improve the implementation of the state's housing policies in the field of municipal housing.

Democracy is the government of the people; given that, people is the holder of sovereignty, which can be exercised directly or through their elected representatives. According to the role of prominence and performance of people in the political decision-making process, either because they act by themselves, in that case is possible to talk about direct or participatory democracy; or by representatives that they elect, that is the meaning of indirect or representative democracy. Between these types of democracy, there is another one which is located in the middle, because it takes important elements of direct and even indirect, its name is plebiscitary democracy and that one which uses electronic devices to manage politics with digital technology is called e-democracy. In this sense, this article seeks to bring the reader closer to the different types of democracy that have occurred in history: participatory, representative, plebiscitary and electronic democracies, describing its advantages and its risks., A democracia é o governo do povo, pois este é o detentor da soberania, que pode ser exercida diretamente ou por meio de seus representantes. Dependendo do maior ou menor protagonismo e atuação do povo no processo de decisão política, seja porque atua por si só, falamos de democracia direta ou participativa, ou por meio de representantes que ele escolhe, falamos de democracia indireta ou representativa. E entre essas duas, há uma intermediária, pois leva elementos do direto e do indireto, que se chama democracia plebiscitária e aquela que utiliza dispositivos informatizados para gerir a política com instrumentos de tecnologia digital, chama-se democracia eletrônica. Nesse sentido, o artigo busca aproximar o leitor dos diferentes tipos de democracia que ocorreram na história: participativa, representativa, plebiscitária e eletrônica, descrevendo suas vantagens e os perigos que ela representa., La democracia es el gobierno del pueblo, por cuanto éste es el titular de la soberanía, que puede ser ejercida directamente o por medio de sus representantes. Según el mayor o menor protagonismo y actuación del pueblo en el proceso de decisión política, sea porque actúa por sí mismo, se habla de democracia directa o participativa, o por medio de representantes que él elige, se habla de democracia indirecta o representativa. Y entre éstas dos, se ubica una intermedia, ya que toma elementos de la directa y la indirecta, que se denomina democracia plebiscitaria y aquella que utiliza dispositivos informáticos para gestionar la política con instrumentos propios de la tecnología digital, se denomina democracia electrónica. En este sentido, el artículo buscar aproximar al lector sobre los diferentes tipos de democracia que se han dado en la historia: la participativa, la representativa, la plebiscitaria y la electrónica, describiendo sus ventajas y los peligros que representa.

The evanescent landscapes are marked by spatial imprints where metaphors serve to imagine the heterogeneous and ritualized narratives that make them understandable.This process requires opening the game between the homogeneous and the fragmentation. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to make visible and analyze how the current reality - multifactorial, technological and fluid - has caused a negative entropy of places, reflected in a culturally and socially “de-spatialized” society, with a tendency to emancipate the individual from his relationship with space; a condition that leads to the lack of care, deterrence, and disagreement of some actors with their places of origin, reducing them to non-contemporary places. After a review of geo-socio-anthropological literature, a model of identity and relational integration of the non-place was designed based on interviews that allow explaining what makes a place familiar and for whom that place is familiar, its connection or disconnection with the space and its identity., Los paisajes evanescentes están marcados por improntas espaciales, donde las metáforas sirven para imaginar lo heterogéneo, y las narraciones ritualizadas, para concretarlas, y requieren apertura del juego entre lo homogéneo y la fragmentación. El propósito es visibilizar y analizar cómo la realidad actual, multifactorial, tecnológica y fluida, ha provocado una entropía negativa de lugares, reflejada en una sociedad cultural y socialmente “desespacializada”, con tendencia a enajenar al individuo respecto a su relación con el espacio; una condición que lleva a la desprolijidad, la disuasión y el desencuentro de algunos actores con sus lugares de origen, que así se reducen a no-lugares contemporáneos. Después de una revisión de literatura social y geográfica, se diseñó un modelo de integración identitaria y relacional del no-lugar a partir de herramientas metodológicas y se aplicaron entrevistas para explicar qué hace familiar a un lugar y para quién es familiar ese lugar, su vinculación o su desvinculación con el espacio y su identidad.

Um das angestrebte Ziel der Klimaneutralität für die Landeshauptstadt Dresden zu erreichen, ist eine aktualisierte Betrachtung aller Potenziale von erneuerbaren Energien im Rahmen der Fortschreibung des Energie- und Klimaschutzkonzeptes auf dem Stadtgebiet notwendig. Bauwerksintegrierte Photovoltaik (BIPV) leistet einen hohen Beitrag an der erforderlichen Energiewende, für die eine Quantifizierung des technischen Potenzials nötig ist. Für das gesamte Stadtgebiet Dresdens wurde auf Grundlage eines virtuellen 3D-Stadtmodells die solare Einstrahlung auf allen Dach- und Fassadenflächen berechnet. Diese Modellierung ermöglicht, unter Anwendung flächenspezifischer Abschläge, eine qualifizierte Abschätzung des Photovoltaikpotenzials. Die Kombination der gebäudescharfen Solarpotenziale mit thematischen GIS-Datensätzen der Stadt Dresden und semantischen Attributen des 3D-Stadtmodells ermöglicht darüber hinaus eine detaillierte Auswertung nach verschiedenen Bauwerkskategorien und Nutzungstypen. Die Identifikation von Bauwerkskategorien mit großem Flächenpotenzial sowie die Berücksichtigung von Eigentumsstrukturen und Denkmalschutzaspekten bietet eine gezielte Unterstützung zur Aktualisierung der PV-Gebäudepotenziale in Dresden und zur Ableitung von konkreten Maßnahmen.

The kasbah has been considered the main place of power in Tunis since the Middle Ages. Its urban structure was stabilised during the Ottoman era. Since then, the governmental functions of the kasbah have always been confirmed: many ministerial functions are carried out in the buildings around its central square, located at the top of the old city of Tunis. This space is perceived as morphologically separate from the medina and functionally dedicated to issues related to the central sphere. This contrasts with the space of the medina, which was historically regulated by the local civic sphere. In spite of this apparent opposition of functions, the purpose of this study is to reflect on the nature of the kasbah as a public place, as a monumental and architectural expression of a negotiated form of power and centrality, and finally, yet importantly, as an urban district participating in ordering the medina. It is where local urban functions such as markets and mosques were located. It structured the civic dimension embodied by the Beldis, a group of urban notables entrusted with most responsibilities in local institutions as professions (guilds, markets, trade), confessional communities, neighbourhoods, and the city as a whole. In contrast with interpretations based on a dichotomic vision of urban morphologies and functions, the aim here is to highlight the intertwining of spaces and the importance of connections between political and commercial centralities in everyday practices, an angle of interpretation that invites nuance into discussions on the nature of centrality.

Stadtwerke spielen für die Energiewende eine zentrale Rolle. Zum einen stellen sie in Deutschland weit über die Hälfte der Versorgung an Strom, Gas und Wärme sicher, zum anderen haben Stadtwerke aufgrund ihrer kommunalen Verankerung eine besondere Position im Spannungsgefüge von Politik, Wirtschaft und Privathaushalten. Wenn es aber um die Frage geht, was den Erfolg von neugegründeten Stadtwerken ausmacht, besteht in der Literatur in gewissem Maße eine Forschungslücke. Die vorliegende Studie, die vom Wuppertal Institut und der BLUBERRIES GmbH gemeinsam erstellt wurde, behandelt ausgewählte Handlungsfelder, bei denen ein Einfluss auf den Unternehmenserfolg von neugegründeten Stadtwerken zu vermuten ist. Dabei werden als Rahmen die Ziele der Rekommunalisierung herangezogen und konkret vier Handlungsfelder in den Vordergrund gerückt. Der Fokus der Studie liegt auf Fragestellungen nach dem wirtschaftlichen Erfolg neugegründeter Stadtwerke sowie deren Zielerreichung. Dabei wird auf den klassischen Ansatz der Erfolgsfaktorenforschung zurückgegriffen. Ziel dieser Studie ist die Formulierung erster Aussagen darüber, wie einerseits die unterstellten Handlungsfelder in ihrer Ausgestaltung, andererseits die Erfolgsmaße durch neugegründete Stadtwerke beurteilt werden. Aufgrund der im Rahmen dieser Untersuchung vorgenommenen Online-Befragung lassen sich für die in den Focus genommenen vier Handlungsfelder (Kooperationen, Digitalisierung, Resilienz und Soziale Verantwortung) die wichtigsten Ergebnisse wie folgt zusammenfassen: Kooperationen und verschiedene Formen der Zusammenarbeit in der Gründungsphase spielen für den Erfolg neu gegründeter Stadtwerke eine sehr große Rolle. Neu gegründete Stadtwerke legen meist großen Wert auf nachhaltige Geschäftsbeziehungen zu örtlichen Unternehmen, was einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum Public Value darstellt. Insbesondere gut ausgearbeitete Geschäftsstrategien in den Bereichen Erneuerbare Energien, Verteilnetzbetrieb, Vertrieb und Diversifikati

Der Beitrag nimmt die "Corona-Pandemie" zum Anlass, um sich mit der Paradoxie von Solidarität mit "den einen" und Entsolidarisierung mit "den anderen" zu befassen. Während Appelle der Parteienpolitik an die Solidarität der Bürger:innen in einzelnen Nationalstaaten zu fluiden Solidaritätsbekundungen vor Ort führen, schottet die Europäische Union (EU) ihre Außengrenzen mehr und mehr ab und setzt geflüchtete Menschen prekären Lebenslagen an Europas Rändern aus.

Die Bekämpfung der Ursachen des anthropogenen Klimawandels ist eine globale Aufgabe. Konkretes Handeln im Klimaschutz muss allerdings vor Ort geschehen, getragen von engagierten Menschen und Institutionen, unterstützt und koordiniert von einer wesentlichen lokalen Schnittstelle zwischen Politik und Gesellschaft - der Kommune. Um für die lokalen Klimaschutzaktivitäten einen strategischen Rahmen und eine perspektivische Handlungsgrundlage zu schaffen, sind bereits zahlreiche integrierte Klimaschutzkonzepte in deutschen Kommunen erstellt worden, welche über die "Richtlinie zur Förderung von Klimaschutzprojekten in sozialen, kulturellen und öffentlichen Einrichtungen" (sog. Kommunalrichtlinie) der Nationalen Klimaschutzinitiative des Bundesministeriums für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit gefördert werden. Doch auch ohne explizite Erstellung eines Klimaschutzkonzeptes werden in vielen Kommunen Konzepte erarbeitet und Maßnahmen durchgeführt, welche gleichwohl dem Klimaschutz dienen - wenngleich diese Begrifflichkeit nicht immer strategischer bzw. normativer Leitsatz ist: So setzen sich die unteren Naturschutzbehörden beispielsweise im Rahmen des Bundesnaturschutzgesetzes für die Stadtklimatologie ein, Hochbauämter sorgen sich um die Energieeffizienz in kommunalen Liegenschaften und lokale Stadtwerke nehmen den Ausbau der Kraft-Wärme-Kopplung der eigenen Heizkraftwerke in Angriff. In Anbetracht der mannigfaltigen Aktivitäten im kommunalen Klimaschutz wird in vorliegender Arbeit untersucht, ob und inwieweit integrierte Klimaschutzkonzepte zur Erreichung der lokalen Klimaschutzziele einen zusätzlichen Beitrag leisten - einen Beitrag für den Klimaschutz, welcher ohne die Erstellung eines lokalspezifischen, exklusiven Klimaschutzkonzeptes nicht generiert worden wäre. Die rechtsradikalen Ausschreitungen 2018 in Chemnitz werfen grundlegende demokratietheoretische Fragen auf: Welche Gefahren drohen von Rechts? Wie wird eine ganze Stadt zum politischen Risikogebiet? Und was bedeutet die Präsenz riskanter Politisierung und Entpolitisierung für unsere Demokratie? Die Autor*innen illustrieren entlang ethnografischer Streifzüge, wie eine apolitische Mitte der radikalen Rechten immer wieder den öffentlichen Raum überlässt. Die Rechtsextremen breiten sich in diesem Vakuum aus und reklamieren demokratische Grundrechte für sich, um sie gleichzeitig abzuschaffen. Als Kulturhauptstadt 2025 muss sich Chemnitz im Umgang mit diesem demokratischen Risiko bewähren.

Können die Schauplätze des Repair- und Do-it-yourself-Urbanismus wesentliche Beiträge zu einer nachhaltigen Stadtentwicklung leisten, die die hegemonialen Praktiken heutiger Wegwerfgesellschaften überwinden? Anhand einer praxeologischen Forschung in zwei Wiener Bezirken analysieren die Autor*innen die Schauplätze des Tauschens und Teilens, des Reparierens, des Upcyclings und des Kreativ-Seins, in denen sich Menschen im öffentlichen Raum für den Erhalt von Dingen engagieren. Mit dem Begriff des Schauplatzes rücken sie die öffentlichkeitswirksamen Praktiken eines nachhaltigen Umgangs mit den Dingen in den Vordergrund und verbinden diese mit aktuellen Diskussionen über notwendige Entwicklungen urbaner Infrastrukturen der Sorge und der Suffizienz.

The increasing platformization of urban life needs critical perspectives to examine changing everyday practices and power shifts brought about by the expansion of digital platforms mediating care-services, housing, and mobility. This book addresses new modes of producing urban spaces and societies. It brings both platform researchers and activists from various fields related to critical urban studies and labour activism into dialogue. The contributors engage with the socio-spatial and normative implications of platform-mediated urban everyday life and urban futures, going beyond a rigid techno-dystopian stance in order to include an understanding of platforms as sites of social creativity and exchange.

The aim of this paper is to reflect on how annual fairs challenged the urban spatialities of trade in medieval and old-regime towns. It is also to pose the question of centrality under the point of view of both the centrality of commercial towns in regional and international networks and the urban centrality of spaces dedicated to trade activities. The study is based on the example of three towns of Greater Poland in the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period. Focusing on trade facilities and on the management of the city space during annual fairs (extraordinary times in the life of cities, when the guild monopoly was suspended and many foreign merchants and ordinary people were gathering in the city), the aim here is to analyse the way in which urban authorities handled the organisation of such big endeavours and how the city space was managed, valorised, and utilized.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the ambitious reorganization of the urban fabric sponsored and supervised by princes or ruling elites, usually aimed at establishing the power and prestige of the central authority, transformed most Italian cities. However, the separation within the city center between a political and ceremonial space, usually centered around the palace of the prince, and a marketplace, that came to characterize most urban contexts, did not occur in Milan. In order to preserve peace and stability in a period of intense warfare, the monarchy sacrificed an invasive oversight of the city and abdicated a higher degree of local power, choosing instead to delegate it to the urban patriciate, the merchant elites, and the Ambrosian church. Free of any restriction, and in order to preserve their financial interests and emphasize their political prominence, the families of the urban elites maintained the economic function of the area around the cathedral square at the expense of the royal-ducal palace and articulated an alternative power network anchored to their palaces in the residential neighborhoods outside the city center.

Die Anzahl der Menschen mit Demenz in Deutschland nimmt stetig zu. Daraus folgen neue Anforderungen an Betreuungs- und Pflegekontexte, die gesamtgesellschaftliche Relevanz entfalten. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes befassen sich am Beispiel Hessens mit der Frage, wie es um die Demenz-Versorgung in unterschiedlichen Quartieren steht, wie stark ehrenamtliches Engagement ist, welche Unterstützungen und welche Versorgungslücken es gibt. Neben der sozialraumorientierten Betrachtung von dörflichen, kleinstädtischen und großstädtischen Kontexten thematisieren sie auch die Folgen der Corona-Pandemie und geben u.a. aus konvivialistischer Perspektive Einblicke in Problemlagen und Lösungsansätze.

Ciudad Juarez, the birthplace of the maquiladora industry in the mid-1960s, won the international newspapers’ headlines since the 1990s as a spot of endemic violence in the northern Mexican border region. The territorial stigmatization of Juarez became even stronger after the unprecedented upsurge of criminality from 2008 to 2010, when it was considered twice the world’s most violent city. This violent context is often considered the result of cartels disputes and hence of the narcos (drug traffickers), responsible for degrading the city. The neoliberal politics of representation of the "undesirables", i.e. drug dealers, sex workers, and other vulnerable groups who could be easily identified as illegitimate dwellers of a "renewed" zone, is the symbolic mainstay both of the zero-tolerance policing (ZTP) and the attempts of gentrification that have taken place in Juarez since 2011. These two urban policies are claimed by the official discourse as the main reasons for the recovering from the seemly unending cycle of violence that Juarez faced until 2010. Nevertheless, the narrative of "rescuing" the city image from the domain of narco-violence, vocalized by decision-makers and hegemonic journalism, contradictorily mobilizes different levels of violence (structural, political, symbolic, and everyday violence) in its formulation. This paper analyses how the interactions between four expressions of violence in the zero-tolerance policing and gentrification policies have violently produced a new space in Ciudad Juarez since 2011.

"Die Daten der Längsschnittstudie 'Kriminalität in der modernen Stadt' (Projektleitung: Prof.Dr. Klaus Boers, Prof.Dr. Jost Reinecke) basieren auf in den Städten Münster und Duisburg durchgeführten Schülerbefragungen. Die methodische Konzeption der Untersuchung zeichnet sich insbesondere durch ein kombiniertes Panel- und Kohortendesign aus, das es ermöglicht, individuelle Delinquenzverläufe nachzuvollziehen und diese zudem zwischen verschiedenen Städten sowie Alterskohorten zu vergleichen. Im Vortrag soll zunächst die Studie genauer vorgestellt werden. Im Anschluss wird die Häufigkeit des Auftretens verschiedener Gewaltdelikte dargestellt und deren jeweilige Entwicklungen im Zeitverlauf nachgezeichnet. Abschließend werden Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt, wie Gewalthandeln mittels selbst berichteter Angaben erhoben werden kann. Hierzu wurden in der vorgestellten Untersuchung sowohl Gewaltintentionen anhand von vorgegebenen Reaktionsmöglichkeiten auf eine fiktive Konfliktsituation (Vignettenanalyse), als auch tatsächlich ausgeübtes Gewalthandeln abgefragt. Die Validität beider Optionen wurde im Längsschnitt sowie im Kohortenvergleich untersucht und konnte bestätigt werden." (Autorenreferat)

Was tun die Bewohner_innen und Besucher_innen in der digitalen Stadt? Die Befunde sprechen für die orientierende Ordnung anhand der Erfahrungen mit der realen Stadt: sie re-konstruieren das Prinzip der Stadt in einem weiteren Medium, dem Cyberspace.

The use of games as a method for planning and designing cities is often associated with visualisation, from simplistic to immersive environments. They can also include complex and sophisticated models which provide an evidence base. The use of such technology as artefacts, aids, or mechanics curates the player experience in different and very often subtle ways, influencing how we engage with (simulated) urban phenomena, and, therefore, how the games can be used. In this article, we aim to explore how different aspects of technology use in city games influence the player experience and game outcomes. The article describes two games built upon the same city gaming framework, played with professionals in Rome and Haifa, respectively. Using a mixed-method, action research approach, the article examines how the high-tech, free form single-player games elicit the mental models of players (traffic controllers and planners in both cases). Questionnaires and the players’ reflections on the gameplay, models used, and outcomes have been transcribed and analysed. Observations and results point to several dimensions that are critical to the outcomes of digital city games. Agency, exploration, openness, complexity, and learning are aspects that are strongly influenced by technology and models, and in turn, determine the outcomes of the game. City games that balance these aspects unlock player expertise to better understand the game dynamics and enable their imagination to better negotiate and resolve conflicts in design and planning.

Der vorliegende Artikel unternimmt eine dekolonisierende Spurensuche im post(real)sozialistischen Raum Cottbus. Inspiriert durch post- und dekoloniale Städteinitiativen lokalisieren wir verschiedene Erinnerungsorte in der Stadt. Wir zeigen, wie der post(real)sozialistische urbane Raum, der aus der DDR hervorgegangen ist, auf ambivalente Weise in eine koloniale Matrix eingebunden ist. Wir rekonstruieren, wie diese spezifische Kolonialität/Modernität zur sozialen Hierarchisierung von sozialen, ökonomischen und epistemischen Beziehungen führte. Die ambivalente Positionierung der DDR, die einerseits koloniale Machtverhältnisse fortsetzte, diesen gleichzeitig entgegentrat sowie selbst von Prozessen der Abwertung betroffen war, konzeptualisieren wir als urbane imperiale Differenz. Inspired by the demands of postcolonial and decolonial urban initiatives, we localise different sites of remembrance in the urban context. We show how the post(real)socialist urban space that emerged from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) ambivalently incorporated a colonial matrix. We conceptualise the ambivalent positioning of the GDR, which simultaneously continued and opposed colonial power relations, and was itself affected by processes of devaluation via urban imperial difference. We argue that it is important to reconstruct the processes of racialisation in the post(real)socialist urban space in order to better understand and oppose contemporary right wing and racist movements.

Urban areas are major consumers of environmental resources and thus often place unsustainable demands on natural resources. As half of the world’s population (55%) lives in urban areas, the environmental degradation produced by cities threatens the health and quality of life of a fair share of the world’s population. For these reasons, progress towards sustainable urban development must be monitored and measured through suitable indicators. With reference to the assessment of air quality as a specific dimension of environmental quality in urban areas, existing studies have introduced various methodologies that mostly focus on objective measures (typically, exposure to outdoor air pollutants) while neglecting measures based on individual perceptions. Our goal is to contribute to filling this gap. To this end, we explore the relationship between objective and subjective measures of urban air quality in European countries. While the objective indicator is based on concentrations of PM2.5, our subjective indicator is reconstructed from individual perceptions collected through the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) sample survey. Finally, through a cluster analysis, we classify the countries into homogeneous groups based on the values of these indicators. Our analysis reveals several differences in the country rankings according to the two indicators. For one group of countries, both approaches converge, thus leading to more definitive conclusions. For other countries, the mismatch between the two indicators suggests that either approach alone is not able to capture the full picture on air quality in urban environments.

This article analyzes possibilities for connecting individual city games for building a network of games working together. City gaming works along with the understanding that cities are self-organizing systems, influenced by multiple bottom-up and top-down actors with varying interests and powers. Affordable housing, climate adaptation, or area development are examples of urgent urban challenges city games typically focus on. The assumption is that if these specialized games could be linked, then a large game infrastructure built as a modular system, can offer various game combinations responding to urban challenges in an integral and holistic way. To test a working game network, city games, models, and digital apps have been linked through their shared datasets as well as game interfaces. Two city experiments have been conducted in two Dutch cities msterdam and Breda - which enabled the testing to function as "constructive design research". In Amsterdam (Klimaatspel) two separate city games were connected through their datasets, while in Breda (Play the Koepel) datasets and interfaces merged to create a new game. Used data models are the Energy Transition Model developed by Quintel and the urban plan cost simulator software of Urban Reality. Used game interfaces (digital and analog) include the Typeform, the Network of Games app, the Urban Reality simulator, and the Play the City table-top game format. The testing considered two different approaches for a potential game network. The first option assumes an all-encompassing digital app, reformatting and involving various games and models in a single interface. The second option is an open approach that looks to link custom-made games with existing interfaces. The second option allows both simultaneous and sequential linking. Die Studie im Rahmen des Collegium Pontes 2004 wendet sich dem Alltagsleben ausgewählter Städterinnen und Städter in Görlitz und Zgorzelec zu und erfragt die alltagsweltlichen Praktiken, die zu einer sozialen Integration der beiden Teile der Stadt über eine deutliche politische und kulturelle Grenze hinweg führen können. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass in den Alltagswelten ein gemeinsames urbanes Leben beginnt. Von den Praktiken der Aktiven kann das Konzept der local governance zur Integration profitieren. Die anhaltende Orientierung der Akteure an den jeweils nationalen Politiken wird durch die Integration des Stadtlebens nicht aufgehoben, so dass die local governance von transnationalen und europäischen Institutionen gerahmt werden muss.

Modelling a 3D city poses an interesting challenge. To create a virtual city, a road pattern has to be designed and a large number of buildings need to be generated. Every urban place has a road network, often a superimposed pattern plan that serves a population density and buildings which follow statutory rules. This patterned behaviour of the city is why it is possible to develop rules or "computational instructions", to generate city models. In this article, we are going to discuss how to use procedural modelling and CityEngine, a rule-based application commonly used in the movie industry and gaming to produce vast realistic cityscapes, for regional and urban planning via an urban analytics approach. Unlike cinema's imaginary worlds, cities have real-life population dependencies that need to be modelled for the development of planning scenarios. The goal is then to use the generative properties of the procedural modelling approach, along with population prediction models, to create informed 3D city scenarios. Instead of designing solutions, the user can use interactive parameters to affect the 3D model globally, thus enabling virtual cities to become active simulators for planning. Using urban analytics and generative environments, procedural cities may be able to create a "teaser" of different versions of how the city would look like in the future.

Since the establishment of the partnership principle within EU regional policy in 1988, the role of cities in the European multi-level governance system has been progressively strengthened. Today, the cities of Europe are central actors with key functions in the implementation of EU regional policy. In parallel to the associated cross-border cooperation, the explicit recognition of local and regional self-government in the European basic treaties (Treaty of Lisbon, Pact of Amsterdam) politically strengthened the role of cities in the European multi-level governance system. This made it officially possible for European municipalities to cooperate with the European Commission and representatives of member states to draw up strategic position papers for future legislative initiatives. At the same time the establishment of macro-regions introduced a framework for the sectoral and geographical adaptation of policies to suit the regions in question. A key role in cross-border cooperation was thus assigned to the cities in the macro-regions. If European cities actively pursue these opportunities they have a chance to establish themselves as the fourth level in the European multi-level governance system and to strengthen their position within the national states and the European institutional framework. The adaptation of intra-state structures is seen as the most important precondition for the municipalities to be able to better express their interests as actors in the political multi-level governance system and thus to gain more influence in the EU. The City of Munich provides an example of how urban policy is, however, often slow to grasp the opportunities offered by the Urban Agenda and macro-regional strategies for European cities.

This article considers the impact that increasing pragmatism and pluralism are having on South-South cooperation (SSC). Focusing on the growing sway of multilateral platforms for cooperation between cities and the reinvigoration of regionalism, it identifies experimentalist design principles for fostering autonomy-enhancing initiatives between developing countries that have the capacity to learn from and scale up locally-informed, adaptive problem solving. The first part of the article frames SSC in light of experimentalist governance theory. The second part provides a case study of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Smart Cities Network, an initiative that captures the promise and challenges of enhancing SSC through regional experimentalist governance of city-to-city partnerships.

Es gibt kaum einen Faktor, der den Alltag und die Entwicklung von Kindern mehr beeinflusst, als die räumliche Gestaltung des Wohnumfeldes und die damit verbundenen Möglichkeiten zum „freien Spiel“ und zur eigenständigen Mobilität von Kindern. Dies ist das zentrale Ergebnis von Studien, die von der Forschungsgruppe „Raum für Kinderspiel!“ in verschiedenen Städten durchgeführt wurden. Der Beitrag zeigt auf, welche zentrale Bedeutung die Gestaltung des urbanen Raums für Kinder hat. Kommunalstatistik und Stadtforschung können mit ihren Indikatoren und Berichtssystemen einen wichtigen Beitrag für eine kinderfreundliche Stadtentwicklung leisten.

Urban sustainability is a wicked issue unsuited to management through traditional decision-making structures. Co-productive arrangements, spaces and processes are inscribed in new organisational forms to bridge between diverse forms of knowledge and expertise. This article suggests that local interaction platforms (LIPs) are innovative responses to these challenges, developed in two African and two European cities between 2010 and 2014. Through elaborating the design and practice of the LIPs, the article concludes that the value of this approach lies in its context-sensitivity and iterative flexibility to articulate between internationally shared challenges and distinctive local practices. Six necessary conditions for the evolution of LIPs are presented: anchorage, co-constitution, context-sensitivity, alignment, connection and shared functions. In the context of increased uncertainty, complexity and the demand for transdisciplinary knowledge production, the platform concept has wider relevance in surfacing the challenges and possibilities for more adaptive urban governance.

What is the heritage of our cities? Which are the monuments, places, and spaces in which it accumulates, and by which practices is it formed, handed down, appropriated? The author takes the readers to twelve cities on three continents and analyses the diverse and contradictory heritage formations that have had a lasting impact on urban life. The vitality of urban heritage, as these vivid and in-depth case studies show, lies in the dynamic and often conflictual processes of social appropriation and interpretation. Covering a diverse range of themes, the book familiarizes the reader with important questions and theories in urban research and heritage studies.

This thematic issue puts "urban commoning" centre stage. Urban commoning constitutes the practice of sharing urban resources (space, streets, energy, and more) through principles of inclusion and cooperation. Whilst generally defined as an autonomous, bottom‐up, and most of all cooperative practice, the sphere of the commons necessarily stands in interaction with two other spheres: the state/city ("provision") and the market ("competition"). Yet, the various interlinkages between the commons, the state/city, and the market are underexplored. Hence the rationale for this thematic issue: How does the relation between commons, states/cities, and markets play out in the urban realm? What are the possibilities and pitfalls of linking commons with states/cities and markets? In the first section of this editorial, we provide a substantiated introduction to the concept of the commons, its history, and its urban applications. In the second part, we give an overview of the issue's contributions. Scholars, activists, and practitioners from the disciplines of urban studies, cultural studies, planning, sustainability, sociology, architecture, and philosophy delve into the uncharted territory between commons, states/cities, and markets, through case studies from the Global North and South. The first three articles delve into the politics of urban commoning while the last three articles illuminate the practice's aesthetic dimension.

Auch wenn Regionen auf den ersten Blick als etwas Faktisches erscheinen, zeigt sich beim zweiten Hinsehen, wie sich das Regionale einer konkreten Begriffsbestimmung entzieht - was auch als Stärke verstanden werden kann. Die Beiträge des Bandes erkunden "die Region", indem sie von Begriffskombinationen ausgehend - etwa "die arme Region", "die flexible Region", "die Genussregion" oder "die Untersuchungsregion" - eine Reise durch verschiedene Dimensionen des Regionalen unternehmen und neue Verständnisse von Regionen, Regionalisierungen und Regionalität anregen.

Like any political, economic, or social happening, the building of architecture can be understood as an historical event. But unlike those other, particularly discrete, types of events, an architectural “event” takes on a concrete form that not only preserves the moment of its beginning but also registers, to a palpable extent, further developments within its context - a process that can be understood as the development of scars upon the architectural surface. It is no coincidence, then, that Reinhart Koselleck used an architectural metaphor to describe the layering of "geschichtliche Zeiten" (historical times) that emerge between "Vergangenheit" and "Zukunft" (past and future), "Erfahrung" and "Erwartung" (experience and expectation): "Wer sich im Alltag von geschichtlicher Zeit eine Anschauung zu machen sucht, der mag auf die Runzeln eines alten Menschen achten oder auf Narben, in denen ein vergangenes Lebensschicksal gegenwärtig ist. Oder er wird sich das Nebeneinander von Trümmern und Neubauten in Erinnerung rufen, und er wird auf den augenfälligen Stilwandel blicken, der einer räumlichen Häuserflucht ihre zeitliche Tiefendimension verleiht, oder er wird auf das Neben-, Unter- und Übereinander unterschiedlicher modernisierter Verkehrsmittel schauen [...]."

Dieser Aufsatz widmet sich urbanen "Gegenorten" im südafrikanischen Durban, die als spezifisch gewaltsame Räume problematisiert und reguliert wurden bzw. werden: Shebeens (populäre, nicht-lizensierte Bars) im frühen 20. Jahrhundert und Bad Buildings (besetzte, "gekidnappte" Häuser) im beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert. Anhand von eigenen Interviews mit Sicherheitsmanagern, Kriminalitätsanalysten und Planern sowie durch polizeiliche, lokalpolitische und journalistische Berichte wird ein sich wandelndes Verständnis von Gewalt und ihrer Räumlichkeit herausgearbeitet. Die projektierten Räume der Gewalt haben dabei ein zeitliches Pendant, in welchem die jeweilige Gegenwart als Ausnahmezustand pathologisiert wird. Das (selektive) Sichtbar- und Unsichtbarmachen von Gewaltphänomenen durch Expertendiskurse ist der Schlüssel zum Verständnis der unterschiedlichen Stränge einer räumlichen und zeitlichen Verkapselung von Gewalt., This paper investigates violent urban spaces in the South African city of Durban which are conceived as problem areas and categorised as 'other': Shebeens (popular illegal bars) in the early twentieth century, and bad buildings ('highjacked', 'criminal' apartment blocks) of today. On the basis of interviews with, and reports written by, local experts such as police, planners, and journalists in pre- and post-apartheid urban South Africa, this article portrays a changing understanding of violence, in which violent spaces - rather than violent individuals in these spaces - become the object of concern and action for local experts. The 'othering' of violent spaces is paralleled by the 'othering' of violent times: The present is described as a 'state of emergency' in each case. The key to understanding the different spatial and temporal strategies of 'othering' violence lies in the mechanisms by which expert discourses render violence visible or invisible in specific spaces and times.

This study investigated aspects of urban quality of life in European cities. To this end, the Flash Eurobarometer 366: Quality of life in European cities was used. The survey provides opinions of 41 thousands inhabitants from 79 European cities, which enables analysis of interrelation between citizen characteristics, neighbourhood and city contexts and satisfaction with life in a city. The study analysed the following dimensions potentially related to satisfaction with life in a city: (1) availability of services, environment and social aspects in cities and neighbourhood; (2) socio-demographic factors; and (3) city characteristics such as economic development, labour market pressures, size, location, quality of institutions and safety. Findings indicated that satisfaction with life in a city varied considerably both inside cities and across Europe. Dissatisfaction with public transport, cultural facilities, availability of retail outlets, green space, air quality, trustworthiness of people, public administration and administrational efficiency, contributed significantly to dissatisfaction with life in a city. However, when citizens felt secure and satisfied with their place of living, they were also more likely to be satisfied with life in a city. Finally, cities with high percentage of people satisfied with safety in a city tended to be those in which citizens were also more satisfied with life in a city.

Introduction: The objective is to estimate the determinants of the level of visitor satisfaction based on their attributes in Todos Santos and Loreto, Baja California Sur (BCS) and El Rosario and Cosalá, Sinaloa, magic towns located in the northwest region of Mexico. Method: The methodology used consisted in the adaptation of the Tourist Satisfaction Model (MST) of the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico (SECTUR) and is supported by the estimation of a bivariate Probit model such as the suitable econometric approach to jointly model general tourist satisfaction and the tourist satisfaction derived from the culmination of the travel experience. Applied a survey and a statistical sample of 384 surveys was randomly obtained with reagents associated with nominal, ordinal and interval variables to maximize data robustness Results: The results reveal that there was a significant correlation between both satisfactions, for which evidence is shown that they are complementary. Variables independent that make up the blocks of the tourist profile, the reasons for the trip, experience of services, perception of services, and stay and spending were predictors significant for both types of satisfaction. Discussion or Conclusion: The bivariate Probit model applied to the study areas clearly reveals that the two forms of satisfaction are interrelated (satisfaction in general and satisfaction when retiring). On the other hand, within the determinants of satisfaction that refer to the tourist profile, such as age, they have shown that the older the age has a negative impact on the level of satisfaction, while in natural areas such as parks the influence of this variable is positive. The PMs, because they are tourist sites where visitors come because they are places of tranquility, older people tend to spend time with the purpose of recreation and knowledge of the places because they are natural and tourist attractions. Los paisajes evanescentes están marcados por improntas espaciales, donde las metáforas sirven para imaginar lo heterogéneo, y las narraciones ritualizadas, para concretarlas, y requieren apertura del juego entre lo homogéneo y la fragmentación. El propósito es visibilizar y analizar cómo la realidad actual, multifactorial, tecnológica y fluida, ha provocado una entropía negativa de lugares, reflejada en una sociedad cultural y socialmente “desespacializada”, con tendencia a enajenar al individuo respecto a su relación con el espacio; una condición que lleva a la desprolijidad, la disuasión y el desencuentro de algunos actores con sus lugares de origen, que así se reducen a no-lugares contemporáneos. Después de una revisión de literatura social y geográfica, se diseñó un modelo de integración identitaria y relacional del no-lugar a partir de herramientas metodológicas y se aplicaron entrevistas para explicar qué hace familiar a un lugar y para quién es familiar ese lugar, su vinculación o su desvinculación con el espacio y su identidad., The evanescent landscapes are marked by spatial imprints where metaphors serve to imagine the heterogeneous and ritualized narratives that make them understandable. This process requires opening the game between the homogeneous and the fragmentation. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to make visible and analyze how the current reality - multifactorial, technological and fluid - has caused a negative entropy of places, reflected in a culturally and socially “de-spatialized” society, with a tendency to emancipate the individual from his relationship with space; a condition that leads to the lack of care, deterrence, and disagreement of some actors with their places of origin, reducing them to non-contemporary places. After a review of geo-socio-anthropological literature, a model of identity and relational integration of the non-place was designed based on interviews that allow explaining what makes a place familiar and for whom that place is familiar, its connection or disconnection with the space and its identity.

Este proyecto busca identificarlas cualidades arquitectónicas para la generación de patrimonios individuales y apropiación para la construcción de una sociedad participativa en la conservación, cuidado y desarrollo de su territorio, esto viendo la arquitectura como una estrategia para la generación de memoria en forma de elementos y la conformación de paisajes con una relación fenomenológica e íntima, propicios para expresión y desarrollo de experiencias, conformación y exaltación de comunidades o grupos sociales, entre otros.

Los paisajes evanescentes están marcados por improntas espaciales, donde las metáforas sirven para imaginar lo heterogéneo, y las narraciones ritualizadas, para concretarlas, y requieren apertura del juego entre lo homogéneo y la fragmentación. El propósito es visibilizar y analizar cómo la realidad actual, multifactorial, tecnológica y fluida, ha provocado una entropía negativa de lugares, reflejada en una sociedad cultural y socialmente “desespacializada”, con tendencia a enajenar al individuo respecto a su relación con el espacio; una condición que lleva a la desprolijidad, la disuasión y el desencuentro de algunos actores con sus lugares de origen, que así se reducen a no-lugares contemporáneos. Después de una revisión de literatura social y geográfica, se diseñó un modelo de integración identitaria y relacional del no-lugar a partir de herramientas metodológicas y se aplicaron entrevistas para explicar qué hace familiar a un lugar y para quién es familiar ese lugar, su vinculación o su desvinculación con el espacio y su identidad., The evanescent landscapes are marked by spatial imprints where metaphors serve to imagine the heterogeneous and ritualized narratives that make them understandable. [ES] A partir de la descripción del área metropolitana configurada alrededor de la autopista CV-35, esta investigación analiza la periferia de Valencia y los nuevos paisajes que se han generado con un modelo urbano basado en el automóvil. Se analizan los nuevos paisajes “creados” por la autovía y el paisaje que podemos mirar desde ella —la proliferación de áreas comerciales o industriales, urbanizaciones, viarios, estacionamientos o la omnipresencia de espacios residuales— para contribuir a artealizar estas nuevas periferias. Para ello se analizan las aportaciones teóricas de Alain Roger, Remo Koolhaas, Paula de Santiago, Gilles Clément, Solà Morales, Joan y Enric Nogué, Francesc Muñoz o Pere Sala entre otros, como las exposiciones Periferias (colectiva), Castillos en el aire de Hans Haacke o las obras de autores como Montserrat Soto. El objetivo es proyectar un dispositivo artístico para reflexionar sobre esta realidad y contribuir a crear una nueva mirada hacia estos paisajes. In diesem Forschungsprojekt wird untersucht, welche Vorstellungen die Menschen, die in Freiburg wohnen oder sich dauerhaft aufhalten, zu den Charakteristika der Freiburg*innen haben und für wie relevant sie diese Zuschreibungen für Ihr Lebensgefühl und ihr Leben vor Ort einschätzen. Die Forschungsfragen werden durch Überlegungen und Recherchen zu möglichen relevanten theoretischen und empirisch gewonnenen Aspekten erschlossen und durch inhaltsanalytische Auswertungen leitfadengestützer Interviews mit ausgewählten Teilen der Bevölkerung bearbeitet.

Against the backdrop of increasingly fragmented and poly-centric urban climate governance, this article examines the establishment of city climate ‘commissions’ as an experimental means of addressing the challenge of climate change at the city-scale. In doing so it addresses the question: What constitutes diversity in voices and perspectives when trying to represent the city as a place for climate action? To answer this question, the article presents an analysis of the Edinburgh Climate Commission’s establishment, drawing on participatory ethnographic research carried out by a researcher embedded within the project team. The account of how this new mode of urban governance was both conceptualised and then put into practice offers a new institutional angle to the literature on urban ‘experimentation.’ Through our reflective analysis we argue that aspirations to ensure pre-defined ‘key’ industries (high carbon emitters) are accounted for in commissioner recruitment, and an over-emphasis on capturing discernible ‘impacts’ in the short term (by involving organisations already pro-active in sustainable development) hindered an opportunity to embrace new perspectives on urban futures and harness the innovative potential of cities to engage with the multifaceted nature of the climate challenge. Furthermore, new insight into the relationship between local authorities and other ‘place-based’ agents of change opens up important questions regarding how to balance the attainment of legitimacy within the political status quo, and the prospect of a new radical politics for urban transformation.

Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojekts wurde eine mobile Webanwendung entwickelt, die als Informations- und Entscheidungstool für das Aufsuchen städtischer Grünflächen dient. Die Basis bilden eine neuartige Infrastruktur von Diensten sowie verschiedene Datenquellen, wie Open Government Data, Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) und Social-Media-Daten. Zudem ist Wissen von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern aus verschiedenen Befragungen in die App-Entwicklung eingeflossen. Die "meinGrün"-Web-App kann in den Pilotstädten Dresden und Heidelberg genutzt werden.
