Background Patients seek information from numerous sources before choosing a primary care provider; two of the most popular sources are providers’ own online biographies and patient rating websites. However, prior research has generally only examined how these sources influence patients’ decisions in isolation. Objective This study aimed to determine how primary care providers’ online biographies and online patient ratings interact to affect patients’ decision making, especially in the face of negative reviews. Methods An 8-condition online experiment (n=866) was conducted, manipulating patient ratings and the timing of viewing a provider’s online biographical video (pre- or postrating viewing). Results When participants were shown a short video introduction of a provider after reading predominantly negative reviews a positive expectancy violation occurred, which was also related to more positive perceptions of the provider. When exposed to all negative reviews, 43% of participants indicated they would still choose to make an appointment with the provider, with many indicating that the video provided the evidence needed to help make up their own minds. Conclusions These findings are especially relevant to health care organizations seeking to combat a recent rise in fake patient reviews. Providing patients with realistic expectations of the care that clinicians can offer via their own online biographical videos can help counteract negative patient comments online.

This collection of papers was compiled by a number of friends of Barbro Johansson, a well-known Swedish missionary of her generation, who wanted to honour her. Barbro Johansson trained as a teacher in Sweden, and went to Tanzania in 1946. She re-opened and rebuilt the Girls' School at Kashasha, Bukoba, and played an active role in church, community and political affairs. In 1959 sha was elected Member of parliament for Mwanza, and served in that capacity for a number of years. In 1962 she became a Tanzanian citizen. Later, on President Nyerere's request, she became principal of the Girls' Secondary School, Tabora. For three years she was Adviser to the Tanzanian Ambasador to Sweden. She was active in Adult Education and community programmes in Tanzania and served on the Board of the University of Dar es Salaam. A novel trial for estimating popularity of artists in music streaming services (MSS) is presented in this paper. The main contribution of this paper is to improve extensibility for using multi-modal features to accurately analyze latent relationships between artists. In the proposed method, a novel framework to construct a network is derived by collaboratively using social metadata and multi-modal features via canonical correlation analysis. Different from conventional methods that do not use multi-modal features, the proposed method can construct a network that can capture social metadata and multi-modal features, i.e., a context-aware network. For effectively analyzing the context-aware network, a novel framework to realize popularity estimation of artists is developed based on network analysis. The proposed method enables effective utilization of the network structure by extracting node features via a node embedding algorithm. By constructing an estimator that can distinguish differences between the node features, the proposed method can archive accurate popularity estimation of artists. Experimental results using multiple real-world datasets that contain artists in various genres in Spotify, one of the largest MSS, are presented. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations show that our method is effective for both classifying and regressing the popularity.

This paper proposes a model for a dynamic and constructivist perspective on generations. To study synchronous, contemporary interrelations between technology, media and generations, many different methodologies are available. Yet many historical, diachronic studies are marred by flaws and ambiguities in their use of ‘generation’ as a concept. To counter those problems, this paper argues for a process-oriented approach of generations – one which is modelled after Bolter and Grusin’s remediation. By distinguishing three mechanisms – immediate generation, immediate regeneration and hypermediate regeneration – the model of regeneration is linked to three theoretical concerns: the long-standing dilemmas in the sociological study of generations, the controversy around technological determinism in technology studies and contemporary challenges in research of ageing and youth cultures. The feasibility of the regeneration approach is elucidated by applying it to toys, especially educational toys. This paper also provides a methodology for the historical study of generations interacting with media and technology by recommending the combined use of three types of biographies as source materials.

Alfred Rosenblatt (1880-1947) was a Polish mathematician born into a Jewish family in Krakow (Kraków, Poland). He studied in Vienna, Krakow, Göttingen, and worked at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (1910-1936) and at the University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru (1936-1947). During the Second World War, Rosenblatt accepted Peruvian citizenship. His work was important for the development of mathematics in Peru, including the foundation of the National Academy of Exact Sciences, Physics and Natural Sciences in Lima. He is mentioned among the four mathematicians of the twentieth century most important for Peru (F. Villarreal, G. Garcia Diaz, A. Rosenblatt and J. Tola Pasquel). He spent the first half of 1947 on a scholarship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and had several lectures at other universities in the USA. Rosenblatt published almost three hundred scientific papers in various fields of pure and applied mathematics, including ordinary and partial differential equations, algebraic geometry, theory of analytic functions, probability, mathematical physics, three-body problem, hydrodynamics and other applications of mathematics. About 180 papers were published in the years of his work in Poland and about 120 in the years he worked in Peru. His publications are in Polish, German, French, Italian, Spanish and English. Rosenblatt participated actively in four International Congresses of Mathematicians: Cambridge (1912), Strasbourg (1920), Bologna (1928), Zurich (1932). He presented three talks in Bologna and one in Zurich. We describe Alfred Rosenblatt's life and important parts of his work in detail. We have made an effort to see all his papers, so as not to miss any of his achievements in mathematics and applications, including papers and information written in Spanish; e.g., [Ro11], [Ro13]-[Ro16] and [Ro20]. We have already written three articles, two in Polish [Ro8], [Ro9] and one in Russian [Ro12], to introduce him to Polish and Russian mathematicians. openaire: EC/H2020/101004825/EU//InTaVia This paper presents a method for extracting and reassembling a genealogical network automatically from a biographical register of historical people. The method is applied to a dataset of short textual biographies about all 28 000 Finnish and Swedish academic people educated in 1640–1899 in Finland. The aim is to connect and disambiguate the relatives mentioned in the biographies in order to build a continuous, genealogical network, which can be used in Digital Humanities for data and network analysis of historical academic people and their lives. An artificial neural network approach is presented for solving a supervised learning task to disambiguate relatives mentioned in the register descriptions using basic biographical information enhanced with an ontology of vocations and additional occasionally sparse genealogical information. Evaluation results of the record linkage are promising and provide novel insights into the problem of historical people register reconciliation. The outcome of the work has been used in practise as part of the in-use AcademySampo portal and linked open data service, a new member in the Sampo series of cultural heritage applications for Digital Humanities.

In this paper I illustrate how auto/biography, drawing on feminist research methodology, enabled me to chronicle and theorise the lived experience of class relations in the academy. I explain how auto-diegetic auto/biographical doctoral research has provided me with ‘both a mode of representation and a mode of reasoning’ (Richardson, 1997, p. 28) which was therapeutic, reflexive, as well as agentic to help me understand the sense of displacement in the academy and how I used my doctorate to redress that.

Even three-quarters of a century after the end of World War II, the memories left by the war still linger on for most nations that participated in the war. China and Japan suffered greatly throughout the Anti-Japanese War of Resistance (1931 to 1945) and the Pacific War (1941 to 1945). Military casualties were estimated at as high as two million Japanese and three million Chinese. Chinese and Japanese pilot were publicly commemorated as national heroes who sacrificed themselves gloriously for their respective nations’ pride. The two governments built monuments and memorial sites for their pilots, the Chinese Zhanying (Battling Eagles) and Japanese Kamikaze, enabling public memory to focus on the martyrs’ honorable sacrifice for their nations. However, until recent years the personal memories of these pilots and their dear ones have been mostly buried and overshadowed by public memories. In this thesis, I discuss the historiography of Chinese and Japanese personal war memories. Instead of seeing the pilots as mindless, emotionless “war machines,” as public memory has often portrayed them, I attempt to reveal their personal war memories containing the human emotions behind their sacrifices. Relying primarily on memoirs, family letters, and biographies written by the pilots' families, I uncover their struggles between nationalist state propaganda and humanistic reactions to the costly wars. This paper analyzes the personal narratives of five pilots and their loved ones in both China and Japan to reveal the much more emotionally conflicted personal war memories that they shared. Torn between love for their families and their national loyalties, both Japanese and Chinese pilots hoped for the best while preparing themselves for the worst. This exploration reveals that, although China and Japan were enemies, and their governments have worked hard to vilify one other in the public realm of memory, the psychological impacts and the struggles between survival and national loyalties were eerily similar. Overall, this thesis uncovers the personal war memories of Chinese and Japanese pilots who participated in the Anti-Japanese War of Resistance and the Pacific War, aiming to provide a more authentic and comprehensive image of the war and these pilots.

This paper analyses the ideological discourse of the local print and television news media of the eighties in the city of Monterrey, Mexico according to the biographical narratives of four leading journalists. The purpose is to pay attention to the role of ideology in the media as emphasized by cultural studies in its beginnings. The main question posed was: What was the role of the media in the eighties in the reproduction of the ideology of the economic and industrial elite of Monterrey and its relationship with the value system and civic identity of the audience members? According to the journalists interviewed, members of the industrial elite had a direct and explicit influence in the policies and contents of the main local newspapers and television stations, except for a daily newspaper that lost its predominance when rejecting that influence. The paper discusses the close relationship between media, audiences and the structures of ideological reproduction of the local industrial group, and the ways in which all these elements continously interact.

Intercultural education, understood as a progressive approach to transform education and to respond to discriminatory policies and practices in education, is by definition contrary to the concept of education in the nacional-catolicismo (1940s to 1960s in Spain), where the main educational goal was to underline the superiority of everything “Spanish”: Spanish people, Spanish food, Spanish language and Spanish religion, of course. Everything "Spanish" was idealized and regarded as superior. This monocultural perspective was taught both directly -by conveying it to to the children and making them repeat and assume- or indirectly. In this paper some examples of the first method taken from the children’s book El hermano de Paloma (Paloma’s Brother) will be analyzed. The second perspective is more complex and it often implies the negation of the multicultural fact and, from this perspective, the cultural differences were hidden and blurred, and, consequently, they were not allowed to be seen. This paper focuses on one of the collections of children’s books published by the Editorial Cervantes: Cuando los grandes santos, reyes, reinas, hombres, mujeres...eran niños (When the great saints, kings, queens, men, women… were children). This collection of 25 volumes, each one between 120 and 150 pages in length, was published and printed in Barcelona, from 1953 to 1962 and it was quite popular; actually, some of the titles were edited several times. Vicente Clavel’s work in Editorial Cervantes needs to be recognized, too. This publisher, writer and translator, is well known for his initiative to establish a Book Day in Spain starting in 1922. Each volume included from eight to ten characters that were used to describe childhood. This kind of books is the perfect frame to present different cultures over time and in different spaces. For example, the volume about the Great female teachers goes from Catherina of Alexandria to Gabriela Mistral, from Egypt to Chile and from the year 287 to 1889. Since one of the sub-themes of this conference deals with the use of myths and stories about people conveying a message about what is valued in each culture, some titles of this collection will be analyzed from this perspective. Do they show different cultures? How are these cultures explained? Which values are promoted? Our main hypothesis is that the cultural differences over time and the different spaces are blurred and that all the characters are described and explained from the same perspective without taking into account the obvious cultural differences. Furthermore, as each title was targeted either to boys or to girls, who were about nine or ten years old, we also study the different values transmitted to boys and girls. IGEB Biographies, Volume 3 – The present book is the third volume in the IGEB Biographies series. It consists of the written contributions of twelve papers presented during the IGEB conference in Wadgassen/Germany in 2018. They deal with personalities and their work in connection with wind music. IGEB-Biographien, Band 3 – Das vorliegende Buch ist der dritte Band der Reihe IGEB-Biographien. International audience; After a long eclipse in the European academic world that favored other forms of narrative and other sources, biographies have resurfaced in historical research over the last three decades. Renewed interest in biographies for research inthe humanities in general has, in turn, launched a reevaluation among historians, sociologists, and demographists of biography and the biographical method. Benefiting from this reflection that mainly focuses on the European biographicaltradition, this paper analyzes biographical enterprise within the Chinese tradition by relying on a broad collection of official biographies of people who were locally renowned for their skills in medicine during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Byusing an approach that combines a quantitative and qualitative analysis of a series of 422 biographies briefly described in this paper, it first sheds light on the features and function of these narratives. Then, it demonstrates how, in spite of their limitations,biases, and heterogeneity, these biographies of medical experts can provide crucial material for reconstructing the medical landscape at a specific time and place without limiting it to the handful of men whose writings have survived.

The lifetime of a wireless sensor network (WSN) is limited by the lifetime of the individual sensor nodes. A promising technique to extend the lifetime of the nodes is wireless energy transfer. The WSN lifetime can also be extended by exploiting the redundancy in the nodes' deployment, which allows the implementation of duty-cycling mechanisms. In this paper, the joint problem of optimal sensor node deployment and WET scheduling is investigated. Such a problem is formulated as an integer optimization whose solution is challenging due to the binary decision variables and non-linear constraints. To solve the problem, an approach based on two steps is proposed. First, the necessary condition for which the WSN is immortal is established. Based on this result, an algorithm to solve the node deployment problem is developed. Then, the optimal WET scheduling is given by a scheduling algorithm. The WSN is shown to be immortal from a networking point of view, given the optimal deployment and WET scheduling. Theoretical results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the optimal node deployment in terms of the number of deployed nodes. In the simulation, it is shown that the proposed algorithm reduces significantly the number of nodes to deploy compared to a random-based approach. The results also suggest that, under such deployment, the optimal scheduling and WET can make WSNs immortal. QC 20170823

For millennia the turtles and tortoises have been part of the mythical universe of several human cultures. In consequence, the empirical knowledge of oral transmission, the contextualized use, and the symbolic meaning of these animals exceed in antiquity and extension to the academic knowledge on them, which has not impeded, however, that chelonians are currently the most threatened vertebrates on the Earth. This paper deals with the work of explorers and naturalists who laid the foundations of the South American herpetology, in general, and the cheloniology, in particular, with emphasis in Argentina. The work of Marcos Freiberg is recognized as pivotal to the development of the scientific study of the chelonians in this country. Lastly, the progress of cheloniology in recent decades is summarized.

Dieser Aufsatz behandelt das Phänomen des ‚kolonialen Archäologen als Helden‘ aus historischer und postkolonialer Perspektive. Im Zentrum stehen (auto-)biographische Erzählungen über die akademischen Laubahnen der niederländischen Prähistoriker Van Stein Callenfels, Van Heekeren und Van der Hoop. Wir erörtern die Rolle der drei kolonialen Archäologen, die nach herkömmlicher Geschichtsschreibung in den 1920er und 1930er Jahren die prähistorische Vergangenheit Indonesiens ‚entdeckten‘. Unser Ziel ist ein besseres Verständnis der kolonialen Dimension der Vorgeschichtsforschung in Niederländisch- Ostindien und deren Auswirkungen auf die Archäologie Indonesiens in postkolonialer Zeit. Wir fokussieren auf die kulturellen und sich dynamisch verändernden Kontexte und Praktiken, in welchen die archäologische Forschung stattfand und zeigen, dass bei der Herstellung archäologischen Wissens verschiedene Formen indigener Beteiligung wichtig waren. Taking as its starting point a collection of (auto)biographical narratives on the academic careers of Dutch prehistorians Van Stein Callenfels, Van Heekeren and Van der Hoop, this paper discusses the phenomenon of the ‘colonial archaeologist as hero’ from both a historical and a theoretical (post-colonial) perspective. We thus reconsider those colonial archaeologists who, according to traditional histories of archaeology, ‘discovered’ the prehistoric past of Indonesia during the 1920s and 1930s. We do this in order to gain a better understanding of the colonial dimension of research into the prehistory of the Dutch East Indies and the way it continues to affect the archaeology of post-colonial Indonesia. We focus on the dynamic social and cultural contexts within which the archaeological research was developed and conclude that the creation of knowledge of the prehistoric past included various forms of indigenous involvement.

Sexualidade, gravidez e parentalidade jovem são assuntos complexos e de grande debate na modernidade tardia globalizada, jogando questões de liberdade e direitos, a par de regulação e controle social público, constituindo-se, assim em campo de relevância educacional. Este texto revela conhecimento baseado em narrativas de uma jovem portuguesa e outra romena, de 17 e 19 anos, residentes em instituições de protecção social, devido a gravidez e maternidade jovem. Interpretam-se os seus discursos e subjectividades referentes a vivências antes e durante o período de custódia, mas projectando-se além deles. A discussão é enquadrada por relações entre cidadania sexual e íntima e educação, em cada percurso, sem esquecer as regularidades sociais que atravessam as suas vidas e das suas crianças. Discutem-se manifestações e regularidades que relacionam tanto género como poder: desconexão escolar prévia à gravidez, sexualidades desprevenidas e dificuldades em negociar sexo seguro.Nowadays, sexuality, youth pregnancy and parenthood are subjects of great complexity and are relevant for education, in the global modernity debate, concerning rights, regulation and public social control issues. This paper focuses girls' biographical narratives, with seventeen to nineteen years old, living in social protection institutions due to youth pregnancy and maternity. Therefore, their perspectives produced inside the institutions reveal their subjectivities and paths lived before and during the custody experience. The argument establishes the relations between (sexual) citizenship and education, based on each singular path and its social relationships. There are obvious manifestations that relate gender and power, such as: the disconnection prior school, unprepared sexualities, the difficulty in negotiating safe sex.

This licentiate thesis studies Finnish police chiefs' career biographies. Through career biographies it explores various issues concerning work and the police organization, such as professional identity, turning points of career, leadership, supervisor position, and hierarchy in the organization. How does one tell one's career, and how do different experiences construct and shape the professional identity of the Finnish police chiefs? The study approaches the police organization through decades' experience: police chiefs who were interviewed had all worked within the organization for many years, even decades. Thus it enables reader to get into a world that might not be reached otherwise. Police chiefs' career biographies offer an interesting viewpoint to the Finnish police organization. The study reveals, among other things, competitive nature and contradictory expectations concerning one's career moves. It also contributes to studies among civil servants' careers, well-being and motivation at work. In addition, it strengthens understanding about biographies as a relevant way of reflecting one's career. The study implies that police chiefs' work and professional identity are strongly shaped by ambivalent publicity - hierarchy and competition within the police organization, and professional narrative that praises vertical mobility and career moves. The study leans on the theories of narrative identity. The empirical data included 15 biographical interviews, and the analysis of the data was conducted using the expectancy analysis. Analysis is presented in two separate chapters and was motivated by two research questions. Firstly, which issues and experiences strongest construct and shape the professional identity of the Finnish police chiefs? Themes that are studied here are: career choice, supervisor position, different types of publicity, and social relations among those involved with the profession. Secondly, how do the police chiefs tell their careers: how are their work biographies told and emplotted? This section concentrates on the biographers' attitudes towards their (work) history. Four types of career biographies are presented: a battle-oriented romance, a progressive development narrative, a hope-lost career tragedy, and a more lightly oriented comedy narrative. Police chiefs work biographies can be seen as bureaucratic interpretive models. Turning points in the career concerned moves in a structural path of the organization, and different positions were hierarchically connected to each other. Beginnings of the police chiefs' careers were often told with enthusiasm and satisfaction. Career moves took place regularly, one after another. These experiences form a striking point of comparison to the current situation, which instead could be characterized as a time of very few career moves. Niiden avulla tarkastelen erilaisia työhön ja organisaatioon liittyviä teemoja: ammatti-identiteettiä, työuran käänteitä ja muutosta sekä johtajuutta, hierarkiaa ja esimies-alaissuhteita. Miten oma työura kerrotaan ja millaisia ovat ammatti-identiteettiä vahvimmin tuottavat ja muokkaavat kokemukset? Työ kertoo poliisiorganisaatiosta organisaatiossa vuosikymmeniä työskennelleiden henkilöiden kokemusten kautta. Siten se avaa lukijalleen maailman, johon muutoin voisi olla vaikeaa päästä. Tarkastelemalla poliisissa johtajina työskentelevien virkamiesten työelämäkertoja on mahdollista tehdä tulkintoja poliisiorganisaatiosta yleisemminkin. Tutkimuksessa tulevat esiin muun muassa eteneminen poliisiorganisaatiossa, sisäinen kilpailu ja ristiriitaiset odotukset eri tahoilta. Tutkimuksen voi myös nähdä tarjoavan laajemminkin uusia näkökulmia hallinnon muutoksiin, virkamiesten työuriin, työn mielekkyyteen ja työmotivaatioon. Samalla se lisää ymmärrystä elämäkerroista työuran hahmottamisen muotona. Tutkimus nojautuu narratiivisen identiteetin teorioihin. Tutkimuksessa haastateltiin 15 poliisipäällikköä ja aineistoa analysoitiin ensisijaisesti odotusanalyysin avulla. Analyysiosio jakautuu kahteen osaan. Kysyn tutkimuksessani ensinnäkin, mitkä ovat poliisipäällikkyyden 'ydinkokemukset' - mitkä asiat tai aihealueet muodostavat päälliköiden kertomuksissa kaikkein tiheimmät ja merkityksellisimmät kohdat. Tarkastelen erikseen ammatinvalintaa, 'poliisin kanssa ja sen esimiehenä toimimista', ammatin suhdetta erilaisiin julkisuuksiin sekä ammattikunnan keskinäistä tiivistä piiriä. Toisena keskeisenä tarkastelukohteena ovat työelämäkertojen tyypit: millaisia urakertomuksia poliisipäälliköt kertovat, mikä on kertojan asenne (työ)elämäänsä ja millaisena uran juoni esitetään. Tässä osiossa keskityn kokonaisiin työelämäkertatyyppeihin ja pyrin hahmottamaan juonellisen rakenteen ja elämäkerran ensisijaisen asenteen tai muodon. Esittelen neljä uraelämäkerran tyyppiä: kamppailuun keskittyvän romanssin, progressiivisen kehityskertomuksen, urakehityksen toivosta luopuneen tragedian sekä uraan kevyemmin suhtautuvan komediallisen kertomuksen. Tutkimukseni valossa poliisipäällikkyyden ydinkokemusten taustalla vaikuttavat voimakkaasti poliisipäälliköiden ammattikuntaan kohdistuvan julkisuuden ambivalentti luonne ja mallikansalaisuuden paineet, organisaation tiukka hierarkia erilaisine ilmenemineen, uralla etenemistä ja paikasta toiseen siirtymistä korostava mallitarina sekä keskinäinen kilpailu suppeassa ja tutussa joukossa. Poliisipäälliköiden urakertomukset edustavat tutkimukseni perusteella uran byrokraattista tulkintakehystä. Muutokset poliisipäälliköiden työuralla olivat nimenomaan rakenteellisella polulla etenemisiä ja hierarkkisesti yhteydessä toisiinsa. Työuran alut kerrottiin innostuneesti ja nopeaa etenemistä myönteisesti kuvaillen. Ripeän etenemisen luomat odotukset ja tottuminen vertikaaliseen sosiaaliseen liikkuvuuteen taustoittavat 2000-luvun puolenvälin pysähtynyttä tilannetta ja sitä kohtaan tunnettua tympäännystä. Nykytilanne on useiden päälliköiden kohdalla räikeässä kontrastissa muutaman vuosikymmenen takaisen uran alkutaipaleen kanssa.
