National audience; Des chercheurs de l’Observatoire Hommes-Milieux Vallée du Rhône (CNRS-INEE) ont travaillé en 2017-2018 sur la bancarisation et la visualisation de ressources biophysiques historiques sur le fleuve Rhône. Ce projet interdisciplinaire, associant des géographes et des écologues, a consisté à prospecter des services d’archives encore peu explorés afin d’améliorer la connaissance du fonctionnement biophysique du fleuve, notamment avant les grandes transformations liées à l’aménagement hydraulique du Rhône (pré-1850).Une base de données contenant 350 cartes, plans et relevés topographiques issus de 14 services d’archives institutionnels, départementaux et nationaux a été compilée sur l’ensemble du Rhône français (530 km de long), du 17e au milieu du 20e siècle. Cette base de données augmente substantiellement le nombre de cartes déjà collectées dans les précédents programmes de recherche, elle couvre une plus longue période et devrait permettre des analyses spatio-temporelles plus détaillées. Elle offre ainsi la possibilité d’affiner la connaissance de la trajectoire socio-environnementale du Rhône grâce à l’étude de l’évolution des différents compartiments de la plaine alluviale, par exemple la morphologie des chenaux en eau, la végétation riveraine ou encore les éléments anthropiques (bâti, routes, rail, ouvrages hydrauliques).Afin de valoriser la base de données et la rendre accessible au plus grand nombre, l’idée d’un data paper a émergé à la fin du projet. Cette communication propose de revenir sur les différentes étapes de son élaboration : choix de la revue, choix de l’entrepôt de données, gestion des différentes politiques de réutilisation des données d’archives, préparation des données, rédaction, réflexion sur la section Data use and application du manuscrit, soumission, révision publique. L’article publié dans Earth System Science Data en 2021 est le premier data paper en SHS de l’OHM Vallée du Rhône.

Plus, some of the fungi present in paper documents, surfaces and air from archives, libraries and museums are also a threat to human health. This work aims to review the literature on the most important and frequent microfungal populations found in paper-based collections all over the world, and correlate these data with human health risks. A total of 71 studies, dating between 1997 and 2018 were reviewed and organized. From 27 different countries, 207 fungal genera and 580 species were reported. Chaetomium sp. and Fusarium sp. were found to be special contaminants in the air of archives and have been associated with paper biodeterioration. The most common fungi reported (e.g. Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Alternaria species) have an impact on paper conservation but can also cause adverse human health effects. The most frequent fungal species retrieved from discoloured paper materials are discussed in greater detail. Considerations on methods of identification and quantification of fungal contamination are also presented. Finally, the authors acknowledge an urgent need for standardizing research in this area and further studies are proposed. publishersversion published

This presentation centers on the distinctive role the digitized archives of Romare Bearden play into the development of the forthcoming digital catalogue raisonné of the artist. Traditionally archives and catalogue raisonné research are two very distinct fields, but at the Wildenstein Plattner Institute they work in unison as they offer fresh insights into the artist’s production & influences, ultimately establishing meaningful connections between archival collections and art objects.

Context: The retraction of research papers, for whatever reason, is a growing phenomenon. However, although retracted paper information is publicly available via publishers, it is somewhat distributed and inconsistent. Objective: The aim is to assess: (i) the extent and nature of retracted research in Computer Science (CS) (ii) the post-retraction citation behaviour of retracted works and (iii) the potential impact on systematic reviews and mapping studies. Method: We analyse the Retraction Watch database and take citation information from the Web of Science and Google scholar. Results: We find that of the 33,955 entries in the Retraction watch database (16 May 2022), 2,816 are classified as CS, i.e., approximately 8.3%. For CS, 56% of retracted papers, provide little or no information as to the reasons. This contrasts with 26% for other disciplines. There is also a remarkable disparity between different publishers, a tendency for multiple versions of a retracted paper over and above the Version of Record (VoR), and for new citations long after a paper is officially retracted. Conclusions: Unfortunately retraction seems to be a sufficiently common outcome for a scientific paper that we as a research community need to take it more seriously, e.g., standardising procedures and taxonomies across publishers and the provision of appropriate research tools. Finally, we recommend particular caution when undertaking secondary analyses and meta-analyses which are at risk of becoming contaminated by these problem primary studies., Comment: This is a preprint of the paper submitted to PLOS ONE

Objective Stool repositories are a valuable resource for retrospective analyses including quantitative PCR assays to distinguish between asymptomatic shedding and clinical disease. The suitability of archival specimens for this purpose is unclear and requires assessment. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate pathogen detection by TaqMan Array Card (TAC) in travelers’ diarrhea (TD) stool specimens stored for 1–13 years, as well as the impact of transporting specimens on Whatman FTA Elute cards (FTA Cards) on detection. Results The positive percent agreement (PPA) for TAC on stool vs. microbiologic testing was lower than our a priori PPA estimate of 80% for most pathogens: Shigella spp. (100% [95%CI 69–100%]), enterotoxigenic E coli (ETEC) (63% [95%CI 49–75%]), Campylobacter spp. (66% [95%CI 43–85%]) and Norovirus (37% [95%CI 16–61%]). Use of the FTA card resulted in a further reduction of PPA. Our findings suggest that archival specimens may lead to insensitive detection on quantitative PCR assays due to degradation of nucleic acid with prolonged storage, although our limited sample size precluded us from evaluating the impact of storage duration on nucleic acid yield. Additional studies are needed to understand the impact of storage duration on quantitative PCR data.

This white paper has been written as part of the Towards IIIF-Compliance Knowledge in Switzerland (TICKS) project, conducted at the Haute école de gestion de Genève (HEG-GE) between March 2018 and February 2019, which originated on the acknowledgements that the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) ecosystem was not enough known and deployed in the cultural heritage field in Switzerland. The white paper starts with the main principles of IIIF, notably indicating the different technical specifications, or application programming interfaces (APIs), produced by the IIIF community as well as the platforms of Swiss projects or institutions that have deployed IIIF. Going from general to specific, a generic IIIF step-by-step graph and six more precise use cases reflecting different needs of the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) sector giving implementation measures have been produced. Finally, the document contains recommendations for further action as well as some information on the possible reuse of this document for other regions of the world or for other scientific fields. The forerunner of CPB and its arms, NPR and PBS, the NAEB developed and distributed educational radio programs and accompanying print materials to schools and communities across the United States. What���s more, the NAEB lobbied extensively to unlock the airwaves���to access precious frequency space���in order to bring the voices of poet Robert Frost, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and conservationist ���Ranger Mac,��� among many other individuals, into American homes and classrooms. The NAEB���s history is the dramatic story of idealists who believed in the utopian possibilities of technology for education and social uplift and who faced considerable challenges in pursuit of those goals, including economic depression, world war, and the scarcity of the electromagnetic spectrum. It���s a story that has much to tell us about 20th century American culture, as well as the 21st century���s environment of online educational technology and podcasting that we live in today. Despite its historic importance and contemporary relevance, most of the NAEB members��� programs were never heard again after their initial brief moments on the air. The archives for the radio programs and their related paper documentation have been split for over 25 years between two institutions: the University of Maryland and the Wisconsin Historical Society. Unlocking the Airwaves reunites the split collections, ���nally realizing the potential of the collections of the NAEB for exploration and and the broader public.

Early industrialization and the development of cheap production processes for paper have led to an exponential accumulation of paper-based documents during the last two centuries. Archives and libraries harbor vast amounts of ancient and modern documents and have to undertake extensive endeavors to protect them from abiotic and biotic deterioration. While services for mechanical preservation such as ex post de-acidification of historic documents are already commercially available, the possibilities for long-term protection of paper-based documents against fungal attack (apart from temperature and humidity control) are very limited. Novel processes for mechanical enhancement of damaged cellulosic documents use Ionic Liquids (IL) as essential process components. With some of these ILs having azole-functionalities similar to well-known fungicides such as Clotrimazole, the possibility of antifungal activities of these ILs was proposed but has not yet been experimentally confirmed.We evaluated the potency of four ILs with potential application in paper restoration for suppression of fungal growth on five relevant paper-infesting molds. The results revealed a general antifungal activity of all ILs, which increased with the size of the non-polar group. Physiological experiments and ultimate elemental analysis allowed to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration of each IL as well as the residual IL concentration in process-treated paper. These results provide valuable guidelines for IL-applications in paper restoration processes with antifungal activity as an added benefit. With azoles remaining in the paper after the process, simultaneous repair and biotic protection in treated documents could be facilitated.

Among the outstanding figures in the history of the University of Oxford is to be counted the Anglican clergyman Archibald Henry Sayce (1845 - 1933), comparative philologist, religious scholar, Assyriologist, Hittitologist, and Egyptologist. This article offers an overv iew of the Sayce Papers kept at The Queen's College and almost all unpublished. They throw light on aspects not previously known of Sayce life and of his religious and professional activities. They are also relevant for a better understanding of the worldwide intellectual milieus and networks he frequented.

Mold deterioration of historical documents in archives and libraries is a frequent and complex phenomenon that may have important economic and cultural consequences. In addition, exposure to toxic fungal metabolites might produce health problems. In this work, samples of broths of fungal species isolated from the documentary material and from indoor environmental samples of the Archive of Bogotá have been analyzed to investigate the presence of mycotoxins. High resolution mass spectrometry made possible to search for a large number of mycotoxins, even without reference standards available at the laboratory. For this purpose, a screening strategy based on ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC–QTOF MS) under MSE mode was applied. A customized home-made database containing elemental composition for around 600 mycotoxins was compiled. The presence of the (de)protonated molecule measured at its accurate mass was evaluated in the samples. When a peak was detected, collision induced dissociation fragments and characteristic isotopic ions were also evaluated and used for tentative identification, based on structure compatibility and comparison with literature data (if existing). Up to 44 mycotoxins were tentatively identified by UHPLC–QTOF MS. 34 of these tentative compounds were confirmed by subsequent analysis using a targeted LC–MS/MS method, supporting the strong potential of QTOF MS for identification/elucidation purposes. The presence of mycotoxins in these samples might help to reinforce safety measures for researchers and staff who work on reception, restoration and conservation of archival material, not only at the Archive of Bogotá but worldwide. The tutorial provides a practical introduction to Transkribus, a comprehensive platform for the digitisation, AI-powered text recognition, transcription and searching of historical documents. The participants will learn how to run the layout analysis (also for tables and complex layouts) and train and apply Handwritten Text Recognition AI-models to automatically generate machine-readable transcriptions of images of text. In the end, they will have a general understanding of the potential of Handwritten Text Recognition to open new research questions and how Transkribus can be used to collaborate, involve volunteers and teach in DH and History classes.

In Digital Humanities "Distant Listening" scholarship with sound, the expectation is that the data set will be clean and audible and that its metadata will be descriptive and informative.[1] In contrast to this notion, this talk demonstrates the importance of distortions in approximately seventy-five brief "tracks" or recorded songs, stories, and explanations from a folklore recording trip Zora Neale Hurston took in 1935 to Florida and Georgia with Alan Lomax and Mary Elizabeth Barnicle for the Library of Congress. Close listening to her 1935 recordings reveals that social and technical distortions are in line with how Hurston expresses the complexities of authority, authenticity, and subjectivity in her writings, which amplifying black epistemologies of self-making and creating resonant possibilities for imagining new transgressive formulations of cultural identity. This talk will consider how distortions play an important in large-scale digital projects with sound in the humanities.

This presentation reports on a case study investigating how NaturalLanguage Processing, a field that applies computational methodssuch as Machine Learning to human-written texts, can supportthe measurement and evaluation of gender biased languagein archival catalogs. Working with English descriptions from thecatalog metadata of the University of Edinburgh’s Archives, wecreated an annotated dataset and classification models that identifygender biases in the descriptions. Conducted with archival data,the case study holds relevance across Galleries, Libraries, Archives,and Museums (GLAM), particularly for institutions withcatalog descriptions in English. In addition to bringing NaturalLanguage Processing (NLP) methods to Archives, we identifiedopportunities to bring Archival Science methods, such as CulturalHumility (Tai, 2021) and Feminist Standpoint Appraisal (Caswell,2022), to NLP. Through this two-way disciplinary exchange,we demonstrate how Humanistic approaches to bias and uncertaintycan upend legacies of gender-based oppression that mostcomputational approaches to date uphold when working with dataat scale.

Inaugurated in 2022, the CANEVAS consortium brings together researchers from various humanities disciplines whose common interest is to handle video corpora in their research. This poster present specific issues raised by these corpora as well as a selection of tools and methods identified by the Canevas research community.

This workshop will help participants make audio, video, and its interpretations more discoverable and usable through the use of the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) standard for audio and video to produce, publish, and sustain W3C Web Annotations for individual and collaborative audiovisual editions, exhibits, and playlists. The workshop format will include introductions to IIIF, AudiAnnotate, Audacity, and GitHub using model, collaborative AudiAnnotate projects called the "SpokenWeb Anthology," made from recordings from the SpokenWeb Consortium and "Radio Venceremos, the Rebel's Radio Station," which features recordings from Radio Venceremos ("Radio We Will Overcome"), a popular, clandestine radio station that the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) created to broadcast news and analysis from the mountains of Morazán, El Salvador during the eleven year Salvadoran Civil War (1981-1992).

Historical collections kept in archives and libraries represent a cultural and artistic heritage of innumerable value. Recently in Oman, more than seventy thousand documents were collected from different countries and displayed as archives showed evident sign of mold contamination. The objectives of the present study were to screen these archives for mold invasion and a test for the effective control measure. For this, 102 samples were collected from documents of different sources and incubated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at ambient temperature (25 ○C±2). The isolated fungi were identified microscopically and confirmed with DNA extraction, PCR and DNA sequencing. Twenty-two fungal species belonging to 11 genera were recovered. The genus Penicillium (46.8%) was the most prevalent, followed by Aspergillus (30.7%), Cladosporium (7%), Rhizopus (4%), and Chaetomium (3.5%) whereas the remaining 6 genera represent only 8%. Eleven species were previously reported from similar substrates, whereas 11 species and one genus are new records for the mycoflora of archives. Sodium hypochlorite at 0.3-5.2% completely inhibited the fungal growth of the 10 tested fungal isolates with minimum inhibition concentration at 0.7%. Fumigation of books with 0.7-5.2% sodium hypochlorite completely inhibited all fungi without evident damage of the documents or ink discoloration. Therefore, sodium hypochlorite can be recommended as effective and eco-friendly disinfectant for archives comparable to other hazardous chemicals.

For many early modern Europeans, among the novelties of their age was a copia of information, experienced as both abundance and variety. The profusion of books that accompanied the advent of the printing press is widely known, but the period also saw many other unprecedented information flows. With the widespread adoption of paper instruments for recording the day-to-day functioning of government and statecraft, scholarship and science, and commerce and finance, records accumulated in great numbers, individuals and institutions were forced to adopt techniques to manage the information flows. Early modern Europeans of many stripes were forced to become information managers. “Paperwork” thus became a staple of early modern life, and has been with us ever since.

Celle-ci apporte des informations exceptionnelles sur l’auteur de ce récit et son destinataire. Nous en évaluerons l’intérêt au regard de sa vraisemblance, en contextualisant autant que possible son écriture, mais également la manière dont ses enjeux politiques se réactualisent d’une décennie à l’autre. Ce texte longtemps resté ignoré fut finalement diffusé dans les cercles érudits au cours des années 1630. Mais la notoriété acquise n’ira pas sans manipulation. Contrary to what historiography usually reports, the famous account of the "Relation de la mort de MM. les duc et cardinal de Guise..." was never written by Marc Miron, the 1st physician of Henry 3rd. Our investigation aims at tracing the history of this text through its printed and then manuscript sources, in order to identify the origin of the error that was later peddled. Comparing the various copies preserved highlights the oldest of all, produced at the turn of the 17th century. It provides exceptional information on the author of this story and its recipient. We will evaluate its interest in terms of its likelihood, contextualising as much as possible its writing, but also the way in which its political issues had been updated from one decade to the next. This long-ignored text was finally disseminated in scholarly circles during the 1630s, but the fame it acquired was not without manipulation.

This poster presents a digital humanities study abroad program that brings undergraduate students to the UK to explore the intersections of technology, humanities, and the arts. Over four weeks, the students meet with curators, DH practitioners, and creatives. In addition to connecting students with professionals in the cultural heritage sector, the program challenges students to create small-scale digital humanities projects.

In the case of the historical Fonds of Ioannis Kapodistrias period (mid 19th c), in the General State Archives of Greece, information inherent in the paper material was retrieved, organized and interpreted along with the evidence provided by the written content and archival context of the documents examined. This synthesis aimed to promote understanding of the archival material in terms of its preservation and explore the premises of the history of paper in Greece of the time.

Working outside traditional bureaucratic structures, animal activists have a long history of creating, managing and using records in radical ways to bring the suffering of animals to society’s attention. Today’s online platforms enable animal activism on a networked scale, with unprecedented reach and immediacy of impact, but also with risks and challenges. This article presents findings from a critical case study of the radical recordkeeping of Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), a US-based animal liberation group. The case study explores the performative role recordkeeping plays in the group’s animal activism and advocacy, and the challenge of ensuring the longevity of an archival record of its activities and their impact. It is framed by Records Continuum Theory and illustrates the benefits of applying a Records Continuum lens to researching radical recordkeeping contexts. The paper reports on the research findings of the case study, including the vital role recordkeeping plays as a form of “strategic witnessing” for the activities of DxE, as well as in developing the DxE community and communicating its mission to the public. It discusses the challenges faced by DxE in preserving their archives into the future through integrating archiving into their current radical recordkeeping processes, Continuum-style, and addressing the risks associated with using online collaborative platforms for recordkeeping and archiving. Overcoming these challenges will ensure that current recordkeeping plays its part in DxE’s animal activism, and that in the future records of continuing value take their place among the multiple narratives of society in the archival multiverse.

Zbornik radova s Konferencije i škole o zapisima, arhivima i pamćenju održane na Sveučilištu u Zadru od 6. do 10. svibnja 2013. Zbornik je podijeljen u pet cjelina koje se bave idejama u području arhivistike i knjižničarstva, konceptualnim modelima i njihovim implementacijama, dokumentima i njihovom analizom, očuvanjem zapisa, identitetom i pamćenjem, te metodama istraživanja u arhivistici. U zborniku je objavljeno 16 radova opremljenih sažecima na engleskom i na hrvatskom jeziku i ključnim riječima. Radovi u zborniku odlikuju se interdisciplinarnošću zbog čega će ona biti zanimljiva širokom krugu znanstvenika i praktičara. Osim toga, u zborniku okupljeni radovi suvremenim istraživačkim metodama obrađuju teme iz arhivistike, te komparativne teme iz knjižničarstva i arhivistike.

The article wants to show the connection between the enriched personal papers of Emil von Behring (1854-1917) in the Behring archives in Marburg (established in 1927) and the history of the first biography of the scientist, which was published by Heinz Zeiss and Richard Bieling during Nazi era in 1940. One focus is placed on Behring's widow Else von Behring (1876-1936), who was active in arranging Behring's papers in proper order and in searching a biographer of her husband's life. The paper also presents new discoveries from the Behring Works archives in Marburg which show Behring--founder of the serum therapy and first winner of the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1901--as an entrepreneur who was fighting for control and influence in the field of science and of business: maybe another narration of Behring's life.

The papers of Cicely Williams were given to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre in 1993, and subsequently catalogued. They cover most aspects of her work in the field of maternal and child health, as practitioner, teacher and consultant, 1929-1989, especially in the developing world. The collection includes correspondence, reports, lectures, publications, photographs and sound recordings, and is of relevance to a wide range of issues related to maternal and child health and the development of appropriate local health care systems. In particular, it is of interest in relation to Williams' pioneering work on the identification of the childhood malnutrition disease kwashiorkor. The Cicely Williams papers complement many other collections held by the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre. This article focuses on two pre-war reports of her work in the Gold Coast and Singapore, which show the early development of ideas which are echoed throughout the rest of her papers.

Research has tremendously contributed to the developments in both practical and fundamental aspects of limb prosthetics. These advancements are reflected in scientific articles, particularly in the most cited papers. This article aimed to identify the 100 top-cited articles in the field of limb prosthetics and to investigate their main characteristics. Articles related to the field of limb prosthetics and published in the Web of Knowledge database of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) from the period of 1980 to 2012. The 100 most cited articles in limb prosthetics were selected based on the citation index report. All types of articles except for proceedings and letters were included in the study. The study design and level of evidence were determined using Sackett’s initial rules of evidence. The level of evidence was categorized either as a systematic review or meta-analysis, randomized controlled trial, cohort study, case–control study, case series, expert opinion, or design and development. The top cited articles in prosthetics were published from 1980 to 2012 with a citation range of 11 to 90 times since publication. The mean citation rate was 24.43 (SD 16.7) times. Eighty-four percent of the articles were original publications and were most commonly prospective (76%) and case series studies (67%) that used human subjects (96%) providing level 4 evidence. Among the various fields, rehabilitation (47%), orthopedics (29%), and sport sciences (28%) were the most common fields of study. The study established that studies conducted in North America and were written in English had the highest citations. Top cited articles primarily dealt with lower limb prosthetics, specifically, on transtibial and transradial prosthetic limbs. Majority of the articles were experimental studies.

The chapter draws on extensive archival work on the papers of English poet Elizabeth Jennings and discusses them in relation to her poetry. It also describes and reflects on the process of selecting from them for a digital site that would reach a broad audience.

Aquest text, que té el seu origen en la ponència que vam presentar al simposi internacional Fonts gràfiques i documentals per a l’estudi històric dels hospitals (abril 2013), pretén oferir un petit mostrari de la informació que es pot extreure i les conclusions que se’n deriven, de la consulta directa de les fonts documentals de l’antic hospital de la Santa Creu de Barcelona. El punt de partida de la nostra recerca s’emmarca en els mateixos orígens històrics d’aquesta centenària institució, és a dir, l’albada del segle xv. En aquest sentit, bàsicament hem fet servir els llibres d’entrades de malalts i d’expòsits, un minutari comptable i uns manuals notarials del quatre-cents i d’èpoques posteriors, conservats a la Biblioteca de Catalunya i a l’Arxiu Històric de la Fundació de l’Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. El nostre propòsit no és fer-ne un estat de la qüestió, ni esbossar una història de la pobresa barcelonina, ni tampoc plantejar una visió comparativa de les institucions hospitalàries, senzillament, després de reflexionar sobre el tema, mirarem de dialogar amb les fonts i que siguin elles les que parlin. Procurarem, en el possible, sentir la veu dels pobres del passat, però sense oblidar que la pobresa no és propietat exclusiva dels temps medievals., This essay is based on the paper presented at the International Symposium Documentary and visual sources for the historical study of hospitals (April 2013), and it aims to offer a small sample of the information that can be extracted from the direct consultation of the documentary sources of the old Hospital de la Santa Creu in Barcelona, and the conclusions that can be derived from it. Our research begins with the birth of this centuries-old institution, that is, at the dawn of the fifteenth century. In this sense, we have basically used the books of admission of patients and foundlings, a minute book and several notarial manuals from fifteenth-century and later, preserved in the Library of Catalonia and the Historical Archive of the Foundation of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. Our purpose is not to overview the history of poverty in Barcelona or to establish a comparison between its hospitals, but rather to reflect upon the sources, enter into a dialogue with them and let them speak for themselves. When possible, we will try to listen to the voices of the poor of the past, without forgetting that poverty is not exclusive to the medieval period.

This paper and presentation describes an attempt to index British historical archive the Prize Papers using a Handwriting Recognition Technology (HRT) known as MONK which was developed at the University of Groningen. As part of these efforts we organised a 'labelathon' event which brought together 14 expert volunteers for five hours of labelling. The presentation details how we prepared the archive to ensure that labelling activities had an indexation focus,before describing the outcome of this event.&nbsp

Open-access literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. Self-archiving or deposit of scholarly outputs in institutional repositories (open-access green route) is increasingly present in the activities of the scientific community. Besides the benefits of open access for visibility and dissemination of science, it is increasingly more often required by funding agencies to deposit papers and any other type of documents in repositories. In the biomedical environment this is even more relevant by the impact scientific literature can have on public health. However, to make self-archiving feasible, authors should be aware of its meaning and the terms in which they are allowed to archive their works. In that sense, there are some tools like Sherpa/RoMEO or DULCINEA (both directories of copyright licences of scientific journals at different levels) to find out what rights are retained by authors when they publish a paper and if they allow to implement self-archiving. PubMed Central and its British and Canadian counterparts are the main thematic repositories for biomedical fields. In our country there is none of similar nature, but most of the universities and CSIC, have already created their own institutional repositories.The increase in visibility of research results and their impact on a greater and earlier citation is one of the most frequently advance of open access, but removal of economic barriers to access to information is also a benefit to break borders between groups.

Des dinosaures sur papier : des notes « sur le terrain » comme on en trouve dans le Badlands de Robert Kroetsch passe en revue cette œuvre postmoderne de 1975 portant sur une expédition paléontologique fictive près de la rivière Red Deer, en Alberta, conformément à la récente tendance à exiger la vérification systématique des données à la base des récits métafictifs historiographiques dans la littérature canadienne-anglaise. Inspirée de l’exploration canonique qu’a effectuée John Livingston-Lowes des plus grands poèmes de Samuel Taylor Coleridge par le biais de la mine d’or du Gutch Memorandum Book dans The Road to Xanadu, cette thèse entreprend un nouveau type de recherche qui se démarque des archives conventionnelles et de la tradition documentaire. S’appuyant sur des documents holographes non publiés provenant de dépôts d’archives situés au Québec, en Ontario et en Alberta et écrits par des collecteurs, des géologues et des paléontologues de la Commission géologique du Canada, ainsi que sur des notes « sur le terrain », des notes de recherche et des journaux personnels écrits par Robert Kroetsch pendant la rédaction de son roman Badlands, cet examen critique révèle les strates sous-jacentes inédites d’une œuvre de fiction particulière. Dans pratiquement toute fouille paléontologique, le retrait de ce qui enveloppe un spécimen révèle souvent des données supplémentaires qui peuvent, si elles sont soigneusement interprétées, offrir des indices essentiels sur les environnements paléontologiques. Ainsi, un squelette de dinosaure est rarement retiré d’une carrière stérile dans son intégralité. Il en va de même pour toute recherche sur un processus littéraire. Aucun texte ne s’autosuffit. Comme Kroetsch s’est efforcé de produire son récit sous forme d’interrogation sur la création et la transmission des données historiques, particulièrement grâce à des notes « sur le terrain », une vaste étude de ce « terrain » comprenant des intertextes de l’Antiquité, des sciences, de l’Histoire, de l’histoire populaire, de récits de voyages et de la littérature canadienne et internationale est ici menée. On y fait librement référence à des périodes et à des auteurs très diversifiés, allant de Thomas Jefferson et des tombelles à Bruce Chatwin et sa peau de « brontosaure ». Évidemment, aucune entreprise interdisciplinaire du genre ne peut être exhaustive. Ce projet se veut plutôt une vitrine littéraire réunissant des curiosités autour d’une œuvre principale, soit le Badlands de Robert Kroetsch. Réduites à leur plus simple expression, les notes « sur le terrain » constituent des messages destinés à la postérité. En explorant trois thèmes principaux, cette thèse explique comment ces messages pourraient être transmis. « Saxa Loquuntur ! », ainsi intitulé en référence à l’analogie de Freud avec l’archéologie, traite des métaphores associées aux témoignages de la pierre ; « Good Jones » porte sur les façons dont la taxinomie peut combler le désir d’un chercheur d’os de ne pas tomber dans l’oubli ; « Box 16 » suit une piste documentaire en parcourant les écrits de Kroetsch pour reconstituer tant l’élaboration d’un roman que les notions de temps, d’espace et d’origine d’une œuvre littéraire., Paper Dinosaurs: Field Notes as Finds in Robert Kroetsch's Badlands revisits the 1975 postmodern novel about a fictionalized palaeontological expedition down Alberta's Red Deer River in light of recent calls for systematic investigation into the source materials of historiographic meta-fictions in anglophone Canadian literature. Inspired by John Livingston-Lowes' canonical dissection of the major poems of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, via the treasure trove of the Gutch Memorandum Book in The Road to Xanadu, this study undertakes a new process focused inquiry into the archive and into the documentary tradition. By excavating unpublished holograph materials from Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta repositories written by Geological Survey of Canada collectors, geologists, and palaeontologists, in addition to field-notes, research notes and diaries produced by Robert Kroetsch during the writing of Badlands, this critical examination reveals hitherto unseen strata underlying a particular work of fiction. In most any palaeontological dig the removal of overburden from a target specimen often exposes surprising ancillary data, which through careful interpretation may give vital clues to palaeo-enviromments. A dinosaur skeleton is rarely pried whole from a sterile quarry. Neither is any inquiry into literary process. No text exists unto itself. Because Kroetsch so self-consciously crafted his narrative as an interrogation of history generation and transmission – specifically via the written word in the vehicle of field-notes – this study surveys a broad field encompassing inter-texts from antiquity, science, history, popular history, travel writing, Canadian and World literatures. Recourse is freely made to widely divergent authors and periods from Thomas Jefferson and the barrow mounds to Bruce Chatwin and his "brontosaurus" skin. Of course no such inter-disciplinary enterprise can be exhaustive. Rather this project assembles a kind of literary cabinet of curiosities grouped around the principal specimen of Robert Kroetsch's Badlands. In their most reductive configuration, field notes are messages to posterity. Through three main themes this study explores how these messages may be conveyed: "Saxa Loquuntur!", so titled after Freud's archaeological analogy, investigates metaphors of stone speaking; "Good Jones" interrogates how taxonomy can be made to serve a bone collector's desire to be remembered; and finally "Box 16" follows a documentary trail into Kroetsch's papers to trace not only the construction of a novel but also notions of time and place, and authorship., [À l'origine dans / Was originally part of : Thèses et mémoires - FAS - Département d'études anglaises]

This publication brings together a number of the ‘thinkpieces’ prepared for a workshop convened by the Nordic Africa Institute in Pretoria, South Africa, on 26–27 November, 2009. Shortly before the Second World War time, Nishina reported on a series of prominent nuclear physical and radiochemical studies in collaboration with Kimura. They artificially produced (231)Th, a member of the natural actinium series of nuclides, by bombarding thorium with fast neutrons. This resulted in the discovery of (237)U, a new isotope of uranium, by bombarding uranium with fast neutrons, and confirmed that (237)U disintegrates into element 93 with a mass number of 237. They also identified the isotopes of several middle-weighted elements produced by the symmetric fission of uranium. In this review article, the highlights of their work are briefly summarized along with some explanatory commentaries.

This article is partly concerned with defining the history of history exhibitions in Australia as a field of enquiry. Its specific departure point is the notion that the use of archival documents within exhibitions repays historical examination. I discuss how documents have been selected for and used in exhibitions at the Australian War Memorial between 1922 and 1954. The Memorial’s collections began with the acquisition of archival records, and from the beginning, archives were fundamental to of the development of the institution and the exhibitions in it. I argue that documents were used to legitimise the historical interpretation the Memorial offered in its exhibitions. I also contend that words on paper had a power of their own to evoke visitors’ imaginings and memories.

The Lewis S. Feuer papers at Brandeis University include correspondence, manuscripts, Feuer’s collection of radical literature, and other personal and professional materials. The process by which these materials came to Brandeis and were organized into an archival collection reveals connections and lacunae inherent in the material record and illuminates the principles involved in “archiving a life.”

Reflexions, des d’una perspectiva arxivística, sobre la part de la documentació que va ser confiscada als anomenats “enemigos y desafectos al Movimiento Nacional” a partir de l’ocupació militar de Catalunya (1938–1939) i que està dipositada a l’Archivo General de la Guerra Civil, amb seu a Salamanca. Des de l’època coneguda com a transició política del franquisme a la democràcia, n’han reclamat el retorn persones i institucions diferents —principalment la Generalitat de Catalunya— i pràcticament tots els grups polítics han fet intervencions parlamentàries en aquest sentit. S’avalua l’opinió pública formada a partir d’uns dos-cents documents (articles, entrevistes i altres tipus de col•laboracions) publicats a la premsa escrita editada a Espanya entre el juny i l’octubre de 2002, complementant-les amb les opinions expressades en fòrums de discussió tècnica com Arxiforum o Bibcat.

Las donaciones de archivos personales de miembros de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo son frecuentes en el Centro de Documentación Histórica, y se convierten en valioso testimonio de la vida universitaria. Profesores, alumnos, personal de apoyo académico, personas que a lo largo de su existencia se entrelazaron con la universidad y que aportaron de una u otra forma a la institución de la cual formamos parte, quieren dejar una prueba de su paso. Por ello, su manejo y conservación son fundamentales en el tratamiento de los fondos personales legados al CDH. El siguiente trabajo mostrará cómo se realiza la tarea de conservación en nuestro archivo., The donations of personal archives from members of University National of Cuyo are frequent in Historical Documentation Centre, and they become valuable testimony of university life. Teachers, students, academic support staff, people who throughout their existence were intertwined with the university and who contributed in one way or another to the institution of which we are a part, want to leave proof of their passing. For this reason, their management and conservation are fundamental in the treatment of personal funds bequeathed to the CDH.
