Pulp and paper industries are very important for developing the Brazilian economy. During production processes, many effluents are generated with high polluting potential. The objective of this study is to conduct an extensive literature review on the characteristics of effluents and treatment forms adopted by Brazilian mills in this industrial sector. Most consulted studies address raw (without treatment) and secondary (after biological treatment) effluents, considering their main characteristics like pH, chemical and biochemical oxygen demands (COD and BOD, respectively), color, solids, organochlorines, toxicity, estrogenic activity, and phenols. Raw effluents differ considerably in composition, depending on the type of paper produced, the pulping process employed, and other steps, like pulp bleaching. Raw effluent characteristics indicate that this effluent cannot be directly disposed of into water bodies, because it does not comply with federal and state disposal standards. Secondary effluents normally comply with Brazilian legislations, although some studies have reported COD and total phenol concentrations higher than disposal standards, suggesting that additional treatments are necessary. Treated effluent reuse was verified in some Brazilian mills, while its disposal in eucalyptus plantations has been considered a promising alternative for irrigation purposes.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) and food allergy (FA) are common conditions, especially during the first 12 months of life. When GOR leads to troublesome symptoms, that affect the daily functioning of the infant and family, it is referred to as GOR disease (GORD). The role of food allergens as a cause of GORD remains controversial. This European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) position paper aims to review the evidence for FA-associated GORD in young children and translate this into clinical practice that guides healthcare professionals through the diagnosis of suspected FA-associated GORD and medical and dietary management. The task force (TF) on non-IgE mediated allergy consists of EAACI experts in paediatric gastroenterology, allergy, dietetics and psychology from Europe, United Kingdom, United States, Turkey and Brazil. Six clinical questions were formulated, amended and approved by the TF to guide this publication. A systematic literature search using PubMed, Cochrane and EMBASE databases (until June 2021) using predefined inclusion criteria based on the 6 questions was used. The TF also gained access to the database from the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology working group, who published guidelines on GORD and ensured that all publications used within that position paper were included. For each of the 6 questions, practice points were formulated, followed by a modified Delphi method consisting of anonymous web-based voting that was repeated with modified practice points where required, until at least 80% consensus for each practice point was achieved. This TF position paper shares the process, the discussion and consensus on all practice points on FA-associated GORD.

The purpose of this review was to identify and analyze the main characteristics of the 100 most-cited papers in the field of endodontic therapy in primary teeth. A search for the most-cited articles was conducted in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science ‘Core-Collection’ (WoS-CC) database up to December 2020. Papers were ranked in descending order, by number of citations, and each paper was matched with the citation count on Scopus and Google Scholar. Two independent reviewers selected the most-cited papers and analyzed it according to the number and density of citations, year and journal of publication, authors, countries and contributing institutions, study design, topic of the paper, and keywords. Spearman’s correlation and Poisson regression were used to determine associations between the number of citations and study characteristics. The citation count varied from 15 to 135 (WoS-CC), 8 to 141 (Scopus), and 14 to 317 (Google Scholar). Of the 306 contributing authors, most paper contributions were from Sakai VT, Oliveira TM, and Machado MAAM (5 each). Most of the papers originated from the USA (n=21) and Brazil (n=18). Randomized trials were the most common study design (n=32), and “pulpotomy” was the most frequently used keyword (n=35). Poisson regression showed that the number of citations decreased by 1.5% each year, and increased by 9.7% for each unit of impact factor. This bibliometric analysis highlighted papers, authors, and institutions that have contributed to endodontic therapy in primary teeth. Common terms of interest in this research area was also identified, representing the first bibliometric analysis on this subject.

Over the course of less than a quarter of a century, two Brazilian Heads of State – Fernando Collor in 1992 and Dilma Rousseff in 2016 – have been removed from office by impeachment. There has been much controversy surrounding both proceedings, particularly the latter. The article seeks to discuss briefly the history of the proceeding of impeachment in Brazil and its significance for the country’s political life after 1988. Through an analysis of the impeachment cases of President Fernando Collor and President Dilma Rousseff, and overview of the literature on impeachment in Latin America, the paper will address the similarities and differences present in both cases in which a Brazilian Head of State was removed from office. The last part of the article will further discuss the disputes among Brazilian jurists triggered by differing evaluations of this legal measure and, in particular, the more recent case of its implementation in Brazil.

Antiresorptive therapy is the main form of prevention of osteoporotic or fragility fractures. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a relatively rare but severe adverse reaction to antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs. Physicians and dentists caring for patients taking these drugs and requiring invasive procedures face a difficult decision because of the potential risk of MRONJ. The aim of this study was to discuss the risk factors for the development of MRONJ and prevention of this complication in patients with osteoporosis taking antiresorptive drugs and requiring invasive dental treatment. For this goal, a task force with representatives from three professional associations was appointed to review the pertinent literature and discuss systemic and local risk factors, prevention of MRONJ in patients with osteoporosis, and management of established MRONJ. Although scarce evidence links the use of antiresorptive agents in the context of osteoporosis to the development of MRONJ, these agents are considered a risk factor for this complication. Despite the rare reports of MRONJ in patients with osteoporosis, the severity of symptoms and impact of MRONJ in the patients' quality of life make it imperative for health care professionals to consider this complication when planning invasive dental procedures.

This position statement of the Department of Hypertension of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN) addresses the controversy surrounding the use or suspension/replacement of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockers (particularly inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme or angiotensin II AT1 receptor blockers) prophylactically in individuals using these drugs, due to the possibility of allegedly worsening the prognosis of hypertensive patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. The SBN Hypertension Department recommends individualizing treatment and maintaining these medications until better scientific evidence is available.

Vascular accesses for hemodialysis are considered the patient’s lifeline and their maintenance is essential for treatment continuity. Following the example of institutions in other countries affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Brazilian Society of Nephrology developed these guidelines for healthcare services, elaborating on the importance of carrying out procedures for the preparation and preservation of vascular accesses. Creating definitive accesses for hemodialysis, grafts and arteriovenous fistulas are non-elective procedures, as well as the transition from the use of non-tunneled catheters to tunneled catheters, which cause less morbidity. In the case of patients with suspected or confirmed coronavirus infection, one may postpone the procedures for the quarantine period, to avoid spreading the disease.

The scientific publication landscape is changing quickly, with an enormous increase in options and models. Articles can be published in a complex variety of journals that differ in their presentation format (online-only or in-print), editorial organizations that maintain them (commercial and/or society-based), editorial handling (academic or professional editors), editorial board composition (academic or professional), payment options to cover editorial costs (open access or pay-to-read), indexation, visibility, branding, and other aspects. Additionally, online submissions of non-revised versions of manuscripts prior to seeking publication in a peer-reviewed journal (a practice known as pre-printing) are a growing trend in biological sciences. In this changing landscape, researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology must re-think their priorities in terms of scientific output dissemination. The evaluation processes and institutional funding for scientific publications should also be revised accordingly. This article presents the results of discussions within the Department of Biochemistry, University of Sao Paulo, on this subject.

It aims to contribute to the debate regarding the mechanisms which turn a physical asset, with low liquidity and high transaction cost, on an asset with high liquidity and free of barriers to its circulation, with emphasis on types of contracts and securitised debts subordinating indicators of housing production, combined with expectations of financial market gain and different real estate markets integration through standardization and compilation of real estate debts into a single securitization term. This applies to the geographical scale of the country and is focused on a particular financial instrument, the Real Estate Receivables Certificates (CRI), regulating the range of transformations that have come to integrate, structure and coordinate Brazilian real estate investments. The total amount of CRI issued between 2011 and 2016 is taken into account, pointing out not only the importance of Caixa Economica Federal bank of Brazil but also the role of house financing agent. Thus, the location in gated housing areas are also detailed, further exploring the dimensions of product homogenization, spatial dissemination and territorial selectiveness which they gradually produce, sell and move these paper houses around. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a high-production-volume chemical with endocrine disrupting properties commonly used as color developer in thermal paper. Concerns about the potential hazards of human BPA exposure have led to the increasing utilization of alternatives such as bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF). This study was designed to assess: (i) BPA, BPS, and BPF concentrations in 112 thermal paper receipts from Brazil, France, and Spain by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS); and (ii) hormone-like activities of these receipts using two receptor-specific bioassays, the E-Screen for (anti-)estrogenicity and PALM luciferase assay for (anti-)androgenicity. BPA was present in 95.3% of receipts from Spain, 90.9% of those from Brazil, and 51.1% of those from France at concentrations up to 20.27 mg/g of paper. Only two samples from Brazil, two from Spain, and ten from France had a BPS concentration ranging from 6.46 to 13.29 mg/g; no BPA or BPS was detected in 27.7% of French samples. No BPF was detected in any receipt. Estrogenic activity was observed in all samples from Brazil and Spain and in 74.5% of those from France. Anti-androgenic activity was observed in > 90% of samples from Brazil and Spain and in 53.2% of those from France. Only 25.5% of French samples were negative for both estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity. Estrogenic and anti-androgenic activities per gram of paper were up to 1.411 µM estradiol (E2) equivalent units (E2eq) and up to 359.5 mM procymidone equivalent units (Proceq), respectively. BPA but not BPS concentrations were positively correlated with both estrogenic and anti-androgenic activities. BPA still dominates the thermal paper market in Brazil and Spain, and BPS appears to be one of the main alternatives in France. There is an urgent need to evaluate the safety of alternatives proposed to replace BPA as developer in thermal printing. The large proportion of samples with hormonal activity calls for the adoption of preventive measures.

OBJECTIVE: To contrast how Brazil’s and Canada’s different jurisdictional and judicial realities have led to different types of telemedicine and how further scale and improvement can be achieved. COMPOSITION OF THE COMMITTEE: A subgroup of the Besrour Centre of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and Canadian telemedicine experts developed connections with colleagues in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and collaborated to undertake a between-country comparison of their respective telemedicine programs. METHODS: Following a literature review, the authors collectively reflected on their experiences in an attempt to explore the past and current state of telemedicine in Canada and Brazil. REPORT: Both Brazil and Canada share expansive geographies, creating substantial barriers to health for rural patients. Telemedicine is an important part of a universal health system. Both countries have achieved telemedicine programs that have scaled up across large regions and are showing important effects on health care costs and outcomes. However, each system is unique in design and implementation and faces unique challenges for further scale and improvement. Addressing regional differences, the normalization of telemedicine, and potential alignment of telemedicine and artificial intelligence technologies for health care are seen as promising approaches to scaling up and improving telemedicine in both countries.

COMPOSITION OF THE COMMITTEE: A subgroup of the Besrour Centre of the College of Family Physicians of Canada developed connections with colleagues in Brazil and collaborated to undertake a between-country comparison, comparing and contrasting various elements of both countries’ efforts to strengthen primary care over the past few decades. METHODS: Following a literature review, the authors collectively reflected on their experiences in an attempt to explore the past and current state of family medicine in Canada and Brazil. REPORT: The Brazilian and Canadian primary care systems are faced with similar challenges, including geography, demographic changes, population health inequities, and gaps in universal access to comprehensive primary care services. Although the approaches to addressing these challenges are different in both settings, they highlight the central importance of family physicians in both systems. Both countries continue to face considerable challenges in the context of mental health services in primary care. It remains important for Canada to draw lessons from the primary care systems and reforms of other countries, such as Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an ethical framework for collaboration in international academic partnerships in family medicine. COMPOSITION OF THE COMMITTEE: A subgroup of the Besrour Centre of the College of Family Physicians of Canada including family medicine and bioethics experts began to collaborate in 2014 to undertake the development of an ethical framework and tools for the establishment of ethically sound international academic partnerships. METHODS: Following 2 consultative workshops and a wider consultation process with the Besrour Centre global community, the authors developed an ethical framework and tools for approval by the Besrour Centre leadership in November 2017. REPORT: Partnerships are essential to family practice and to the field of international development. The flawed nature of many North-South research partnerships underlines the importance of and need for delineating core principles for ethically sound partnerships, of which 10 have been identified in this process: accountability, cost and efficiencies, excellence, equity, humility, justice, leadership, reciprocity, respect for self-determination, and transparency. Based on these principles, a decision-making framework was created to translate these values into actions and to promote a cohesive and transparent structure for discussions. Fostering fairness, transparency, and consistency in decision making reduces the potential for inequity in a partnership, leading to lasting relationships that endure beyond the scope of a partnership agreement.

BACKGROUND The lack of information regarding the burden of acute bacterial meningitis in Latin America leads to a reduction in the estimated incidence rates of the disease, and impairs public health decisions on the use and follow-up of preventive interventions, particularly, the evaluation of existing vaccination policies. The use of the real-time PCR in diagnostic routine procedures has resulted in a substantial increase in confirmed bacterial meningitis cases. However, in resource-poor countries, these assays are only available in reference laboratories. Sample transportation to these laboratories is a critical constraint, as it requires specialized, high cost courier services. To overcome this barrier we evaluated the use of FTATM Elute filter paper cards for the conservation and processing of samples under normal environmental conditions, as they would be when transported from remote and under-equipped healthcare facilities to the reference centers. A total of 401 samples received in 2015 as part of Sao Paulo's national surveillance for routine diagnosis were selected for this study. METHODS The sensitivity and specificity of real-time PCR were evaluated using fresh serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples processed using our laboratory's standard DNA extraction, and processing the same samples after being dried and stored on FTATM card, and DNA extracted following the manufacturer's instructions. RESULTS The sensitivities for detection of Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae from CSF dried and stored on FTATM cards were 98%, 92%, and 100%, respectively, and with serum samples were 73%, 88%, and 100%, respectively. When compared to our laboratory's standard methodology, results showed high concordance, with Kappa index ranges of 0.9877-1.00 for CSF, and 0.8004-1.00 for serum samples. CONCLUSION The use of FTATM cards for CSF and serum conservation and transport represents a rapid, reliable, and cost-effective alternative that will allow obtaining valuable epidemiological information that would otherwise be lost.

Introduction: Malnutrition in hospitalized patients is not evaluated frequently. However, it is a critical issue given that it has been related to a high rate of infectious complications and increased mortality rates. There is a high prevalence of patients with nutritional impairment in the home environment, which favors their clinical worsening, the increase of re-hospitalizations and, consequently, the increase in public health expenditures. Objective: Nutrition experts have thoroughly discussed and written this positioning paper on hospital and homecare malnutrition to describe the prevalence of malnutrition in Brazil. Best practice recommendations for nutrition therapy of patients in hospital and homecare, in particular the use of oral nutritional supplements (ONS), to those who are at risk of malnutrition or malnourished were evaluated, and the impact on clinical and economic data were assessed. In addition, they emphasize that investments in oral nutritional supplementation are also important in the homecare environment (home or nursing homes). Materials and methods: Selected scientific articles on disease-related malnutrition, especially those carried out in Brazil, were assessed. Data on prevalence, clinical outcomes, and economic burdens were reviewed. Results and conclusion: Several studies have shown the importance of in-hospital nutritional assessment for early detection of malnutrition and early intervention with nutrition therapy, in particular with oral nutritional therapy. Unfortunately, hospital malnutrition remains high in Brazil, with severe consequences for patients. The implementation of universal nutritional screening and diagnosis as well as the therapeutic approach of malnutrition, particularly with the use, when possible, of oral nutrition supplements as the first step to address this condition is still low, and demands the investment in educational resources to change practices. Routine use of nutritional therapy in hospital and homecare settings improves clinical outcomes, is cost effective, and would be expected to help reduce healthcare costs.

To compare primary care in Canada and Brazil and how both countries have embraced the Starfield principles in the design of their health care systems.A subgroup of the Besrour Centre of the College of Family Physicians of Canada developed connections with colleagues in Brazil and collaborated to undertake a between-country comparison, comparing and contrasting various elements of both countries' efforts to strengthen primary care over the past few decades.Following a literature review, the authors collectively reflected on their experiences in an attempt to explore the past and current state of family medicine in Canada and Brazil.The Brazilian and Canadian primary care systems have both adopted and advanced the Starfield principles in various ways, with both countries showing an increasing trend toward adopting interprofessional team-based care. Access to primary care remains a challenge in rural areas in both countries, and longitudinal relationships between providers and patients appear to be more common in Canada. With the advent of technology, increasing patient engagement and expectations, the decline of paternalistic medicine, and the sheer mass of readily available information (and misinformation), to be successful, primary care systems must also be constructed to engender trust at both the local and the system levels. Both countries face challenges to maintaining trust in the context of the increasing prevalence of team-based care, and a lack of trust at the system level can be seen in patients' perceptions about the difficulty of finding a family doctor and in high rates of emergency department and urgent care centre use in both countries. Primary care reform must be implemented with the public's trust in mind.Trust is a crucial ingredient to the success of primary care and must be protected at both local and system levels. If designed with trust in mind, primary care in Canada and Brazil has the potential to meet the challenges set out by the Starfield principles.

The use of mind maps as a method of building knowledge, planning, organizing activities and ideas can be seen in the literature related to ergonomics. The results of such use are relevant and its use in academic area found. However, regarding to its use in industrial environments, studies can't not be found. With this scenario, and based on the perception of the ergonomist about the importance of using methods such as mind maps in support of human cognition, it seems pertinent to its use in industry sectors whose cognitive demand requires. Given these assumptions, this study aimed to apply the method of Mind Maps in Productive Maintenance sector of a Brazilian paper. The Productive Maintenance sector in the Paper Industry has an important contribution to operational performance. With practical Predictive Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance and Corrective Maintenance, the industry advocates to make the machines to produce paper is not to stop producing when they are programmed to do so. Among the practices cited, the Preventive Maintenance is one that leads to pre-determined intervals in order to reduce the possibility of placing the equipment in a condition below the required level of acceptance. Therefore, this article aims to propose using the tool "mental maps" in order to collaborate in planning and implementation of preventive maintenance activities in the sector of mechanical maintenance of a pulp and paper industry in southern Brazil. The study investigated the maintenance sector through its employees, who went through training about the tool and then use it and ergonomists company.

Background: A better understanding of how multicomponent school-based interventions work and their effects on health and education outcomes are needed. This paper described the methods of the Movimente Program, a school-based intervention that aims to increase physical activity (PA) and decrease sedentary behavior (SB) among Brazilian students. Methods: This is a cluster randomized controlled trial with adolescents from 7th to 9th grade in public schools from Florianopolis, Southern Brazil. After agreement, 6 schools were randomly selected to intervention or control groups (3 schools each), and all eligible students were invited to the study. The Movimente intervention program was performed during a school year and included 3 main components: Teacher training (including face-to-face meeting, social media platform, and handbook with lesson plans); improvements in the PA environment in school; and educational strategies. Control schools continued with their traditional schedule. Baseline (March/April 2017), postintervention (November/December 2017), and maintenance (June/July 2018) evaluations included PA and SB as primary outcomes (assessed by self-report and accelerometry). Secondary outcomes included psychosocial factors related to PA and SB (e.g., social support and self-efficacy), as well as health (e.g., quality of life and nutritional status) and education (e.g., academic achievement) outcomes. A program evaluation was performed based on the RE-AIM framework. Participants, intervention staffs, and evaluators were not blinded to group assignment, but a standardized evaluation protocol was applied independently of the trial allocation. Results: Statistical analyses will include a multilevel approach for repeated measurements and mediation analysis. Any side effects of the intervention will be recorded. The sample size close to that expected (n = 1090) was reached (n = 999). The results of this trial will involve valuable information about the effect and the evaluation of a multicomponent intervention carried out in a middle-income country. Conclusion: By creating opportunities for adolescents to be active at school using multicomponent strategies, the Movimente program has the potential to enhance students health and academic performance which may encourage the school community (e.g., teachers, principals) to adopt the program. Also, this trial will provide evidence for practitioners, policy makers, and researchers on how multicomponent program may be implemented in a school setting. Trial registration: The trial is registered at the Clinical Trial Registry (Trial ID: NCT02944318; date of registration: 18 October 2016).

Objective: To verify the opinion of Nursing Technical Training students on the stages of construction of the End-of-Course Paper. Method: A cross-sectional study with a qualitative and quantitative approach. A total of 94 students participated from a Nursing Technical course of an institution in the State of São Paulo. A questionnaire was used with assertions, followed by a "Likert Scale" and open field for additional comments. Results: The students gave a positive evaluation of the stages involved in completing the paper, but negative responses regarding the time available and obligatory nature (38%). Nevertheless, they understood the essence of the task, in order to foster personal and professional growth; with perspectives to advance in other modalities of the course. Conclusion: It is important that course administrators and professors are prepared to support their students, aiming at an effective transformation for the way of thinking and practice in health care. RESUMEN Objetivo: Verificar la opinión de los estudiantes de la Enseñanza Técnica de Enfermería sobre las etapas de construcción del trabajo de conclusión de curso. Método: Estudio transversal, con abordaje cualitativa y cuantitativa. Participaron 94 estudiantes del curso Técnico de Enfermería de una institución del Estado de São Paulo. Fue utilizado un cuestionario con asertivas, seguidas por una "Escala Likert" y campo abierto para comentarios adicionales. Resultados: Los estudiantes evaluaron positivamente la realización de las etapas de trabajo de conclusión de curso, excepto el tiempo disponible y su obligatoriedad. Ellos asimilaron la esencia de la construcción de ese trabajo, en el sentido de propiciar crecimiento personal y profesional, con perspectivas para avanzar en otras modalidades de curso, aunque 38% no concuerde con la obligatoriedad de esa construcción. Conclusión: Es importante que gestores y docentes estén preparados para apoyar a los estudiantes, visando la efectiva transformación en la manera de pensar y reaccionar en salud. INTRODUCTION: Human serofrequency of antibodies against Taenia solium antigens was determined and risk factors for cysticercosis transmission were identified. METHODS: Individuals (n=878) from periurban and rural locations of Lages, SC, were interviewed to gather demographic, sanitary and health information. Interviews and blood sample collections by finger prick on Whatman filter paper were performed from August 2004 to May 2005. Observation determined that 850 samples were suitable for analysis and were tested by ELISA using vesicular fluid of Taenia crassiceps heterologous antigen. To ensure the reliability of the results, 77 samples of the dried blood were matched with sera. The reactive samples were submitted to a serum confirmatory immunoblot (IB) test using purified Taenia crassiceps glycoproteins. RESULTS: The ELISA results for the dried blood and serum samples were statistically consistent. ELISA was positive in 186 (21.9%) out of 850 individuals. A group of 213 individuals were asked to collect vein blood for IB (186 with positive result in ELISA and 27 with inappropriate whole blood samples) and 130 attended the request. The IB was positive in 29 (3.4%) out of 850 individuals. A significant correlation (p = 0.0364) was determined among individuals who tested positive in the IB assay who practiced both pig rearing and kitchen gardening. CONCLUSIONS: ELISA with dried blood eluted from filter paper was suitable for cysticercosis population surveys. In Lages, human infection was associated with pig rearing and kitchen gardening. The prevalence index was compatible with other Latin American endemic areas. INTRODUÇÃO: O primeiro levantamento sobre cisticercose humana e identificação dos fatores de risco associados à transmissão, foram realizados em Lages, SC. MÉTODOS: Oitocentos e setenta e sete voluntários de regiões periurbana e rural foram entrevistados e forneceram informações demográficas e condições sanitárias e de saúde. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas por meio de punção digital em papel filtro entre agosto 2004 e maio 2005. Verificou-se que 850 amostras estavam adequadas para análise. No ELISA, utilizou-se o antígeno heterólogo liquido vesicular de Taenia crassiceps. Para assegurar a confiabilidade dos resultados de ELISA, foram pareadas 77 amostras de soro e sangue eluido do papel filtro. A confirmação do diagnóstico sorológico foi feita por immunoblot (IB) com glicoproteínas purificadas de Taenia crassiceps. RESULTADOS: A reatividade de IgG eluída de sangue em papel filtro mostrou-se compatível com a dos soros correspondentes. A triagem por ELISA de 850 indivíduos revelou 186 (21,9%) positivos. De 213 pessoas convidadas a colher soro para IB (186 ELISA positivo e 27 com amostras de sangue total inadequadas), compareceram 130. O IB foi positivo em 29 (3,4%) de 850 amostras. Houve correlação significativa entre IB positivo e a prática de criação de suínos e de horta caseira (p = 0,0364). CONCLUSÕES: ELISA com sangue total em papel filtro mostrou-se adequado para inquéritos populacionais para cisticercose. A transmissão da cisticercose humana na área estudada mostrou correlação com criação suína domestica e horta caseira. A prevalência obtida foi semelhante à relatada em áreas endêmicas da América Latina.

Dengue infection is the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral disease in subtropical and tropical regions, whose primary vector is Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The mechanisms of dengue virus (DENV) pathogenesis are little understood because we have no good disease models. Only humans develop symptoms (dengue fever, DF, or dengue hemorrhagic fever, DHF) and research has been limited to studies involving patients. Samples from serum, brain, cerebellum, heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys from a 13-year-old male patient that died with hemorrhagic manifestations were sent for differential diagnosis at Adolfo Lutz, using both classical virological methods (RT-qPCR, virus isolation, ELISA, and hemagglutination inhibition test) and immunohistochemistry (IHQ). A DENV serotype 4 was detected by a DENV multiplex RT-qPCR, and the C6/36 cell supernatant was used for NGS using Minion. Lesions were described in the heart, liver, lung, and kidney with positive IHQ in endothelial cells of the brain, cerebellum, heart, and kidney, and also in hepatocytes and Kuppfer cells. A whole genome was obtained, revealing a DENV-4 genotype II, with no evidence of secondary dengue infection. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior A presente dissertação se propôs analisar a educação pensada para as mulheres que viveram nas últimas décadas do século XIX no Brasil. Para tanto, utilizei como principal fonte a revista A Estação; que foi um periódico carioca de moda, publicado entre janeiro de 1879 a fevereiro de 1904, destinado às mulheres, que trazia em segundo plano um caderno de literatura. Dediquei especial atenção à seção de crônicas, “Croniquetas”, publicadas por Arthur Azevedo sob o pseudônimo de Eloy, o Herói. Para tal estudo, foi necessário compreender também o entorno da revista levando em consideração sua seção de modas e a parte dedicada a literatura. Aqui, analisei as “Croniquetas” publicadas entre dezembro de 1885 a dezembro de 1889. Este recorte temporal foi feito por ser um marco na educação feminina: na década de 1880 instituições educacionais que até então só aceitavam o ingresso de meninos, passaram a admitir matrículas de meninas, fazendo com que a formação das mulheres ganhasse atenção e virasse pauta nas conversas dos mais renomados intelectuais da época. Na composição desta pesquisa, também foi importante perceber como assuntos de cunho político e abolicionista, que estavam em discussão no momento e apareciam nas tais “Croniquetas”, ganharam algumas especificidades, de acordo com os ideais de Azevedo e do perfil daquele periódico. The present dissertation proposed to analyze the education designed for the women who lived in the last decades of the 19th century in Brazil. For that, I used as main source the magazine “A Estação”; which was a fashionable Rio’s newspaper published between January 1879 and February 1904 for women, with a literature notebook in the background. I paid special attention to the chronicles section, "Chroniquetas", published by Arthur Azevedo under the pseudonym of Eloy, the Hero. For this study, it was also necessary to understand the surroundings of the magazine taking into account its section of fashions and the part dedicated to literature. Here I analyzed the "Chroniquetas" published between December 1885 and December 1889. This temporal cut was made for being a landmark in female education: in the 1880s educational institutions that until then only accepted the entrance of boys, started to admit enrollments of girls, making the formation of women gain attention and became the agenda in the conversations of the most renowned intellectuals of the time. In the composition of this research, it was also important to understand how issues of a political and abolitionist nature, which were under discussion at the time and appeared in such "Chroniquetas", gained some specificities, according to Azevedo's ideals and the profile of that periodical. There are several viral diseases in captive birds. Aves polyomavirus 1 (APyV) and beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) are among the most important in Psittaciformes. The occurrence of these agents has been widely described in various parts of the world; however, little is known about these viruses in South America. APyV and BFDV can cause high morbidity with feather alterations and even mortality. Other variable symptoms could appear depending on the host’s age and taxonomic group. The aim of this study was to detect APyV and BFDV in samples of captive exotic and native Psittaciformes in Brazil. Samples from 120 birds with clinical signs compatible with APyV and/or BFDV were examined. In total, 57 (47.5%) positive birds were found, of which 21 (17.5%) had APyV and 41 (34.17%) had BFDV. Five animals (4.17%) presented concurrent infection. Phylogenetic analysis showed a divergent APyV strain and a diversity of Brazilian BFDV strains. Our study shows that these viruses are present at a significant frequency in captive exotic and native Psittaciformes in Brazil. This study also highlights the need for constant epidemiologic surveillance to preserve bird biodiversity with a focus on endangered Psittaciformes species. Seneca Valley virus (SVV) is the only representative member of the Senecavirus genus of the Picornaviridae family. Since 2014, SVV has been identified as a causative agent of vesicular disease outbreaks in pigs of different ages from Brazil, the USA, Canada, China, Thailand, Colombia, Vietnam, and India. From May 2020, several pig herds, from the Brazilian states Parana and Santa Catarina reported vesicular disease in different pig categories. This study aimed to report the third wave of SVV outbreaks in pig herds in southern Brazil. A total of 263 biological samples from 150 pigs in 18 pig herds were evaluated. The samples were obtained from pigs with clinical signs of vesicular disease (n = 242) and asymptomatic animals (n = 21). Seneca Valley virus RNA was detected in 96 (36.5%) of the biological samples evaluated, with 89 samples from symptomatic and 7 from asymptomatic pigs. The data show that asymptomatic pigs, but in viremia, are possible sources of infection and can act as carriers and possibly spreaders of SVV to the herd. In this study, we report the third wave of vesicular disease outbreaks caused by SVV in different categories of pigs from herds located in southern Brazil.

Stool samples were collected from calves from nine family-based small dairy farms in the state of Rio de Janeiro, for detection and characterization of rotavirus (RV) species A, B, and C (RVA, RVB, and RVC, respectively) by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Twenty-six samples (27.7%) were positive for at least one of the species: 22 (23.4%) samples were positive only for RVA, 3 (3.2%) were positive for RVC, and one sample (1.1%) had co-infection of RVA and RVC. RVB was not detected. Seven (21.9%; n = 32) animals with diarrhea and 19 (30.1% n = 62) asymptomatic animals were positive, with no significant difference in positivity (p = 0.3677). RV was detected in all properties studied, at rates between 14.3 and 80%, demonstrating the widespread circulation of RV in four of the seven geographic regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Infection was more prevalent among animals ≤ 6 months of age. Sequence analysis of a portion of the RVA VP6-encoding gene identified the I2 genotype. RVC was also detected; to our knowledge, this is the first description of this agent in cattle in Brazil. The data presented here should add knowledge regarding the importance and prevalence of RV in our national territory, and may facilitate the planning and implementation of control and prevention measures for bovine rotavirus infections in Brazil.

The prevalence and risk factors for gut carriage of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli among individuals living in the community in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of colonization with antimicrobial-resistant E. coli, including isolates producing ESBL and harboring plasmid-mediated quinolone resistant (PMQR) genes in this community. We performed a cross-sectional study and analyzed fecal specimens of individuals attending outpatient clinics in the city from January 2015 to July 2019. We investigated susceptibility to antimicrobial agents by disc diffusion tests and used PCR to determine ESBL types, PMQR, and the virulence genes that characterize an isolate as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). Among the 623 subjects, 212 (34%) carried an isolate resistant to at least one of the tested antimicrobial agents, with the highest frequencies of resistance to ampicillin (26%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (19%), cefazolin (14%), and ciprofloxacin (CIP, 9%). In addition, 13% (81) of subjects carried a multidrug-resistant-E. coli (MDR-E), including 47 (8% of all isolates) ESBL-producing E. coli (ESBL-E), mainly of CTX-M-8 (15, 32%) and CTX-M-15 (9, 20%) types. PMQR genes were present in 7% (42) of all isolates, including 60% (32) of the 53 resistant to CIP. Previous use of antimicrobial agents, particularly fluoroquinolones, was a risk factor for colonization with MDR-E (25%, 20/81 vs 13%, 70/542, p = 0.01), ESBL-E (28%, 13/47, vs 13%, 77/576, p = 0.01), and resistance to CIP (26%, 14/53, vs 12%, 70/570, p = 0.01). The most pathogenic phylogroups B2, C, and D were 37% of the MDR-E, 30% of the ESBL-E, 38% of the CIP-resistant, and 31% of PMQR gene carrying E. coli isolates. We show that carriage of MDR-E (mostly ESBL-E) reached high levels in the community in Rio de Janeiro, increased by the selection of antimicrobial agents. Much of the resistant E. coli isolates are potential pathogenic strains. The widespread use of antimicrobial agents during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil may have worsened this picture.

To do that, demographers require high data quality or being able to detect and correct errors. Unfortunately, in most countries data are deficient and is it necessary to be critical about the reliability of the available information. Therefore, this dissertation deals with data quality issues that are related, directly or indirectly, with survival analysis. We divided this study into three articles. The first one focuses on cohort mortality analysis in the absence of complete cohort mortality data, using the Truncated Cross-sectional Average Length of Life (TCAL). The second study examines data quality issues among the oldest-old population, focusing on the estimation of centenarians. The third article evaluates education reporting among adults in order to offer evidences of education misstatement. All the articles provide alternative ways to minimize the lack of complete cohort mortality data or the existence of inaccurate data. Para os demógrafos, é de grande relevância a produção de estimativas confiáveis. No entanto, para alcançar tal objetivo, é necessário dispor de dados de boa qualidade ou detectar e corrigir erros nos dados. Infelizmente, na maioria dos países, os dados contêm erros, logo, é necessário ser crítico quanto à confiabilidade das informações disponíveis. Por isso, esta tese aborda problemas na qualidade dos dados que estão relacionados, direta ou indiretamente, à análise de sobrevivência. Nós dividimos este estudo em três artigos. O primeiro centra-se na análise da mortalidade por coorte, mesmo quando não se dispõe de informações completas de mortalidade por coorte utilizando The Truncated Cross-sectional Average Length of Life (TCAL). O segundo estudo examina questões relacionadas à qualidade de dados no segmento populacional mais envelhecido, estimando, de maneira indireta, a população centenária. O terceiro artigo avalia a qualidade da educação reportada nos censos, com o objetivo de identificar erros nesta informação. Todos os três artigos que compõem esta tese contribuem com a discussão sobre a qualidade dos dados, apontando alternativas para contornar essas limitações.

To explore the development of family medicine postgraduate training in countries with varying levels of resources at different stages of development of the discipline.Since 2012, the College of Family Physicians of Canada has hosted the Besrour Conferences to reflect on its role in advancing the discipline of family medicine globally. The Besrour Narrative Working Group was conceived in 2012 at the first Besrour Conference. Their mandate was to use narrative and appreciative inquiry to gather stories of family medicine worldwide. The working group comprised members of various academic departments of family medicine in Canada and abroad who attended the conferences.A consultation process with our partners from lower-middle-income countries was undertaken from 2012 to 2014. Stories were sought from each global partner institute with ties to Canadian family medicine departments. An appreciative inquiry approach was chosen to elicit narratives. Thematic analysis was used to search for common threads and important elements of success that could serve to inform other initiatives in other nations and, in turn, offer hope for greater effect.Sixteen narrative stories have been collected so far. These stories highlight insightful solutions, foresight, perseverance, and ultimately a steadfast belief that family medicine will improve the health system and the care provided to the citizens of each nation. Seventeen themes were elucidated by 3 independent Canadian readers. At a subsequent workshop, these themes were validated by Besrour Centre members from Canada and elsewhere. The linkage between the thematic analysis and the experiences of various schools helps to illustrate both the robustness and the usefulness of the narratives in exploring generalizable observations and the features supporting success in each institute.If we are to understand, and contribute to, the development of family medicine throughout the world (a key objective of the Besrour Centre), we must begin to hear each others' stories and search for ways in which our collective story can advance the discipline.

The Brazilian economy entered a deep recession in 2015–2016 and since then has shown a sluggish recovery. In this paper, we offer an interpretation for the slow growth based on Minsky’s financial instability hypothesis and recent literature on financialization and growth. We analyze the balance sheet of large non-financial companies over the period 2012–2019, a period that comprises the positive investment cycle—initiated during the commodities boom which lasted from the second half of the 2000s until 2014—the 2015–2016 recession, and the period preceding the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on Minsky’s taxonomy of financial profiles, we map a proxy for financial instability at the firm level based on Davis et al. (2019). We also propose an aggregate financial stability index. We conclude that after the 2015–2016 recession, companies have been restructuring their debt profile and adopting a defensive behavior, increasing their liquidity preference. Our analysis supports the interpretation that, even with the sharp fall in domestic real interest rates, the degree of confidence on expectations to recover investment in productive assets is low. This corroborates with the thesis that agents’ decisions do not respond only to supply stimulus, but are guided by expectations of future returns, which fundamentally depend on the performance of aggregate demand. Since 2015, Brazilian economic policy has been driven by fiscal consolidation, which has proven ineffective in increasing economic growth.

The usefulness of filter paper for preservation of bacterial cells was shown by mixed-linker DNA fingerprint analysis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from 77 Brazilian patients. DNA fingerprints of samples spotted onto filter paper and conventional culture material were identical. Thus, filter paper specimens analyzed by an amplification-based typing method provide a new resource for epidemiological studies of infectious diseases.

Arterial blood pressure (BP) is a very useful variable in clinical practice. Its measurement is simple, inexpensive and easy; it is worth noting that BP should be accurately obtained, following the recommendations of the VI Brazilian Guidelines on Hypertension (DBH VI)1. Office BP measurement is the central parameter for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), being directly, continuously and independently related to the risk of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular (CV) events1-3. Thus, the consideration of BP values closer to the upper limits of normality, the so-called prehypertension (PH)2, and intervention on those values have been emphasized over the last decade, because PH represents an important opportunity to prevent established SAH, contributing to reduce the associated CV risk. Repeated BP measurement at the office allows the diagnosis of hypertension and normotension. To better assess BP behavior, there are methods that analyze BP by using a higher number of measurements, minimizing interferences of the environment, situation and observer. Those alternatives are as follows: 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM); and dwelling BP measurement [home BP monitoring (HBPM) and BP self-measurement (BPSM)]. Based on those methods, two other BP classifications were adopted: white coat hypertension (WCH) and masked hypertension (MH)1,3-5 (Figure 1). Epidemiological and clinical studies on those conditions are still limited; however, they deserve attention because of their higher CV risk as compared with normotension6,7. This document represents the position of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology Arterial Hypertension Department (DHA/SBC) on the diagnosis and non-drug and drug therapy for PH, WCH and MH, aiming at contributing to a better clinical practice.

The global emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a serious threat to human and animal health. Recent studies have shown that synanthropic animals can act as reservoirs and disseminators of pathogens and resistant bacteria. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency, distribution, and antimicrobial susceptibility of staphylococcal species and Clostridioides difficile isolated from the feces of free-living rodents and marsupials from two urban parks in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. During a 12-month period, fecal samples from 159 free-living animals, including 136 rodents and 23 marsupials, were collected from two urban parks in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Staphylococcus spp. were more likely to be isolated from rodents than marsupials (p = 0.0164). Eight different staphylococcal species were isolated from 36 (26.5%) rodents and one marsupial (4.3%). S. saprophyticus (48.6%) was the most frequently isolated species, and almost a quarter of the isolates (24.3%) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent, four (10.8%) of which were multi-drug resistant (MDR). Two (5.4%) strains were resistant to cefoxitin and were then classified as methicillin-resistant staphylococci, and one also tested positive for the mecA gene. C. difficile was isolated from two rodents (1.5%), and one strain was toxigenic and classified as ribotype 064. One isolate was resistant to rifampicin, but both strains were susceptible to all other antimicrobials tested, including metronidazole and vancomycin. All C. difficile isolates and all staphylococcal strains resistant to antimicrobials were recovered from the same park. The present study suggests that free-living rodents in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) are mainly colonized by S. saprophyticus and may act as reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant Staphylococcus spp. and C. difficile strains. This is the first study to evaluate the presence of staphylococci and C. difficile from free-living opossums and suggest a low fecal shedding of these organisms by these mammals. Bovine vaccinia (BV) is an infectious disease caused by Vaccinia virus (VACV) characterized by vesicular and exanthematic lesions, mainly in cattle. Although BV has been described in some Brazilian regions in the last decades, official information regarding the current prevalence in bovine herds of Midwestern Brazil is lacking. Thus, the current study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with BV in cattle in the Distrito Federal (DF), Brazil. Sera of 312 cows of 64 herds were tested by virus-neutralizing test for VACV antibodies. Herd and animal seroprevalence were estimated to be 33.3% (CI 95%: 18.2–48.3%) and 10.6% (CI 95%: 1.0–20.2%), respectively. Seropositive cows were detected in dairy, beef, and mixed-purpose farms. The results of an epidemiological questionnaire showed that no risk factor analyzed was positively associated with seropositivity to VACV. There was no significant association between type of milking (manual/mechanic) and seropositivity to VACV; however, most seropositive cows were present in farms with high daily milk production and high number of lactating and adult cows. Our results indicate that VACV circulates in many regions of DF with considerable prevalence in dairy cows. Control measures to restrict VACV circulation and consequences of the infection may be advisable.

Cisgender female sex workers (CFSW) continue to face structural barriers to HIV prevention. We analyzed the acceptability of the oral HIV self-test (HIV-ST) among CFSW as part of a pragmatic trial on HIV prevention in Brazil. Data from in-depth interviews conducted with 12 women from diverse sex worker contexts and participant observation were analyzed using thematic analysis. CFSW valued autonomy in their workplaces and saw the HIV-ST as a possibility for self-care. Some feared clients’ reactions, manager reprimands, and a positive result. HIV and sex work stigma largely drove self-care practices and perceived acceptability of the self-test. We argue that the autonomy offered by the self-test presents a paradox: increasing autonomy on the one hand while risking sidestepping structural dimensions of HIV vulnerability on the other. These nuances must be considered in interventions promoting the HIV-ST by considering the specificities of sex worker contexts, addressing stigma, and effectively involving CFSW and their organizations in intervention development.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the most cited articles in general surgery published by Brazilian authors. INTRODUCTION: There are several ways for the international community to recognize the quality of a scientific article. Although controversial, the most widely used and reliable methodology to identify the importance of an article is citation analysis. METHODS: A search using the Institute for Scientific Information citation database (Science Citation Index Expanded) was performed to identify highly cited Brazilian papers published in twenty-six highly cited general surgery journals, selected based on their elevated impact factors, from 1970 to 2009. Further analysis was done on the 65 most-cited papers. RESULTS: We identified 1,713 Brazilian articles, from which nine papers emerged as classics (more than 100 citations received). For the Brazilian contributions, a total increase of about 21-fold was evident between 1970 and 2009. Although several topics were covered, articles covering trauma, oncology and organ transplantation were the most cited. The majority of classic studies were done with international cooperation. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified the most influential Brazilian articles published in internationally renowned general surgery journals.

A sustained wave of innovation has been the main driver of the Brazilian pulp and paper industry, and key component in its present success. All too often, casual observers describe availability of raw materials and low labor costs as drivers of industries in emerging economies. The Brazilian pulp and paper industry presents powerful example of the importance of long-run efforts to build knowledge based competitive advantages. Right balance of coordination and competition fostered demand-led innovation system, allowed Brazilian firms to integrate efficiently in global learning networks, and nurtured entrepreneurial culture that eventually leveraged industrial change. The subsequent expansion and success of Brazilian pulp and paper industry can to a great extent be credited to the sectoral innovation system and its dual strategy, which has established a clear division of labor between fundamental innovation and knowledge transfer. Both private firms and the public sectoral innovation system have focused Brazilian cutting edge research, development, and innovation efforts on the improvement of eucalyptus, the primary source of superior competitive advantage for the Brazilian pulp and paper industry, and in other science and technology areas created efficient mechanisms to transfer the best available scientific and technological solutions from abroad to Brazil.

Emerging and re-emerging diseases are responsible for recurrently affecting the health of human populations. Although people are aware of these diseases, they do not seem to adopt prophylactic methods to prevent them. Here, we propose to investigate the influence of religiosity/spirituality (R/S) on the frequency of the adoption of prophylactic behaviors and the perception of risk of vulnerability to the disease. We used dengue, which is a seasonal arboviral disease in Brazil, as a model. To measure the dimensions of religiosity/spirituality, we used the Portuguese version of the Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiosity/Spirituality questionnaire. All data were obtained through a structured questionnaire that was answered online by 204 volunteers living throughout Brazil. In 2017, an adult male South American sea lion (Otaria byronia), presenting emaciation and a cervical abscess, stranded alive in Florianópolis, southern Brazil. The animal was directed to a rehabilitation center, dying a few days later. On necropsy, the main gross findings were necrotizing lymphadenitis of the right prescapular lymph node and nodular bronchopneumonia. A novel alphaherpesvirus, tentatively named Otariid alphaherpesvirus 1, was amplified in several tissue samples. No histopathologic findings associated with viral infection were observed. Additionally, pulmonary tuberculosis by Mycobacterium pinnipedii was diagnosed by histopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular techniques. Several bacteria were cultured from antemortem and postmortem samples, including Proteus mirabilis from the cervical abscess and cardiac blood, and Escherichia coli from the cervical abscess and pericardial effusion. Flavivirus, morbillivirus, and Apicomplexa were not detected by molecular techniques. Herein, we report a novel alphaherpesvirus in a pinniped species of the family Otariidae. Although previously described in Southern Hemisphere pinniped species, including South American sea lions, there is limited information regarding M. pinnipedii impact over this group. Further research is required to determine the associated pathogenesis of this novel herpesvirus, and prevalence of Otariid alphaherpesvirus 1 and M. pinnipedii in the reproductive colonies. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the pandemic that started in late 2019 and still affects people’s lives all over the world. Lack of protective immunity after primary infection has been involved with reported reinfection cases by SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we described two cases of reinfection caused by non-VOC (Variants of Concern) strains in southern Brazil, being one patient a healthcare worker. The four samples previously positive for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) were sequenced by a high-performance platform and the genomic analysis confirmed that lineages responsible for infections were B.1.91 and B.1.1.33 (patient 1), and B.1.1.33 and B.1.1.28 (patient 2). The interval between the two positive RT-qPCR for patients 1 and 2 was 45 and 61 days, respectively. This data shows that patients may be reinfected even by very closely related SARS-CoV-2 lineages. Enzyme activities (EAs) and the FERTBIO sample concept have been increasingly adopted as a novel approach to estimate the soil quality in Brazil. However, the performance of this strategy in sandy soils of the Cerrado biome remains unclear. During 2 years, in a Cerrado's sandy soil, the short-term efects of ten diferent cropping systems (conventional tillage or no-tillage associated with monoculture, rotations, and/or successions) on the activities of B-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, and arylsulfatase were studied. Issues related to annual variability and the feasibility of using the FERTBIO sample concept for soil enzymes activities were also evaluated. Soil samples were collected at three diferent depths (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-40 cm) in March 2017 and February 2018. Five years since the beginning of the experiment, the presence of cover crops and no-till promoted improvements in EAs evidencing the importance of regenerative management practices for the sustainability of agroecosystems in sandy soils. Regardless of the cropping systems and depths evaluated, soil organic carbon and EAs showed low temporal variation during the 2 years of monitoring. In this article, by showing that the burden of retrenchment in social spending in Brazil has been overwhelmingly borne by women, we assert that austerity is not gender neutral. Our research investigates the specificities of the gendered impacts of austerity in the country that have rendered Brazilian women structurally more vulnerable to the Covid-19 crisis. We base our argument on a comprehensive literature review summarizing the links between austerity and gender. In the Brazilian case, we explain women's vulnerability in two main aspects: (1) the direct and indirect gendered impacts of austerity in Brazil since 2015, examining the underfunding of policies prior to the pandemic; (2) the gendered effects of the pandemic on already vulnerable groups, amplified by the underfunded policies and the lack of appropriate measures. We show points of proximity between the existing literature on austerity and gender in the Global North and the urgent, structural Brazilian problems.

The Burkholderia genus has high ecological and nutritional versatility, having species capable of causing diseases in animals, humans, and plants. During chronic infections in humans, biofilm formation is a characteristic often associated with strains from different species of this genus. However, there is still no information on the formation of biofilms by plant pathogenic strains of B. cenocepacia (Bce) lineages IIIA and IIIB and B. gladioli pv. alliicola (Bga), which are associated with onion bacterial scale rot in the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil. In this study, we performed an in vitro characterization of biofilm formation ability in different culture media by the phytopathogenic strains of Bce and Bga and investigated its relationship with swarming motility. Our results indicated the existence of an intraspecific variation in biofilm formation capacity in vitro by these bacteria and the existence of a negative correlation between swarming motility and biofilm formation for strains of Bce lineage IIIB. In addition, histopathological analyses performed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of biofilm in vivo by Bce strains in onion tissues.
