Cognitions of child rearing parents about single fathers were investigated. A questionnaire was administered to parent participants of dual parent families with infants to junior high school age children (n=407). The responses were factor analyzed and characteristics of participants' cognition were examined. The results indicated the following. (1) Single fathers were highly evaluated as having responsibility for life and childcare, and for developing as a parent. (2) Social orientation of the children was promoted through living with their fathers. (3) Participants had a positive attitude towards single father families, did not value the family environment with gender-based roles and had no negative impressions about families with only the father. Participants understood the problems of single fathers, such as simultaneously having to work, do housework and child care. Those surveyed showed positive understanding, support and interest in single fathers. Survey results prove the possibility of creating local, day-to-day support networks for single fathers and partnerships between single fathers and their neighbors. It is important to offer information about the social needs of single fathersand promote a positive approach towards them. It is expected that such information would promote the cooperation between single fathers and people around them.
