Bu tez Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil'in Aşk-ı Memnu (1900) romanı ile Kate Chopin'in The Awakening (1899) romanındaki aldatma konusunu ayrıntılı bir şekilde karşılaştırmayı ve incelemeyi amaçlar. Farklı iki kültüre ait kadın başkahramanların evlenmeden önce ve evlendikten sonra yaşadıkları olayları ve deneyimlerini ayrıntılı olarak inceledikten sonra kadın kahramanların asıl aldatma nedenleri psikanalitik feminist bakış açısıyla ortaya konulmuştur. Kadın kahramanların çocukluğunda yaşadıkları ebeveyn eksikliğinden ve evlenmek için verdikleri kararda âşık olmayı ön planda tutmamalarından kaynaklanan trajik olaylar ele alınmıştır. Sevgi eksikliği ve evliliklerindeki yanlış kararlardan dolayı kadın kahramanların kocalarını aldattıkları sonucuna varılmış ve bu aldatmanın yıkıcı sonuçları ortaya konulmuştur. Dönemlerinin ahlaki kuralları gereği yazarları tarafından aldatan kadın kahramanların sonu ölümle sonuçlandırılmıştır. After elaborating on the events and experiences of women protagonist who belong to two different cultures, the main reasons for infidelity of heroines have been put forward by the psychoanalytic feminist perspective. The tragic events which result from a lack of parental love in their childhood and not giving importance to be loved when getting married have been discussed. Because of their lack of love and making the wrong decisions in marriage, heroines cheat on their husband and the devastating consequences of their adultery have been presented. Because of the moral principles of that period, the heroines who commit adultery have been killed by the authors at the end of the novel. Bu çalışma söylevde uyumun sürdürülmesinin önemini ele almaktadır. Önvarsayım dil teorisinde önemli bir yere sahip olmasına rağmen sistematik olarak ele alınmamıştır. Önvarsayım 20 yüzyılın ikinci yarısında ciddi bir şekilde ele alınmaya başlanmıştır. Önvarsayım ciddi olarak ele alınmaya başlandıktan sonra konteks duyarlılığının çok önemli bir unsuru olmuştur. Önvarsayım zamanı ve enerjiyi etkin kullanmada çok etkin bir araçtır. Bu çalışmada iletişim açısından önvarsayımların etkinliği cümle çözümlemeleriyle ele alınmıştır. Önvarsayım türleri verilmiştir. Metin organizasyonunda çok önemli olan önvarsayımların potansiyel gücü ortaya konulmuştur. Cümle organizasyonunda uyum önvarsayımlar ışığında incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma İngilizce metinlerde kelime bağlamındaki önvarsayımların çok önemli olduğuna işaret etmiştir. Though central to the theory of language, the phenomenon of presupposition did not become the subject of systematic study till the second half of the twentieth century. When it did, it quickly became one of the wedges that helped to prise open the hitherto intractable mysteries of context-sensitivity in language. Moreover, it is one of powerful devices for the saving (economizing) of time and energy. In this study, we'll investigate how presuppositional potential of sentences plays essential role in developmental aspect of communication. Types of presuppositions with their varying functions in text organization are among the major goal of the research. The textual communication helps to build ground depending on the assumption that all ideas are hanged together (coherence). Result indicates that English texts rely heavily on existential and lexical presuppositions as well as lexical and personal reference cohesion which contribute effectively in economoizing the text as well as estiblishing its continuity. YÖK TEZ NO: 10355312 Posthumanism is a theory that has been put forward as a reaction to the failing aspects of humanism. It is basically a response to the alleged shortcomings of the humanist thought. Critical posthumanism focuses on the critical discourses rather than technological aspects of posthumanism. The theory is anti-anthropocentric, and is against speciesism. It criticizes the humanist ideology by rejecting the notion of the human as the focal point in Western thought and practices. It rejects the humanist idea that language and reason are human-specific characteristics, and it asserts that these two characteristics are utilized in order for the human to dominate the nonhuman. In this context, this thesis analyzes Gulliver’s Travels from the perspective of the posthumanist theory, and aims to exhibit how the work presages posthumanism as early as in the eighteenth-century by deconstructing and defamilarizing human bodies and reason.

YÖK TEZ NO: 10541061 Drawing upon gender and queer studies, the aim of this thesis is to explore how human and nonhuman relations unravel a liminal space in which new subjectivity might be born. In examining these relations, the study might create an expanded understanding of homosexuality to illustrate the overstepping of certain borders or the blending and overlapping a series of classifications, as well as portraying a self-identification process. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) and Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872) respectively depict how attraction to and fear of the nonhuman are juxtaposed in terms of desires, be it monstrous or sexual. In this sense, Shelley’s and Le Fanu’s monsters will be analyzed as they constantly lure their human partners, as well as being stalkers who chase their victims until one of the parties’ death. The human and nonhuman partners, being the same sexes in both works, will be interpreted as queer with certain situational examples and quotations from the texts. Women’s sexual desires will be also read as a pushing power to queerness. In Frankenstein, the chastity and passiveness of women will be underlined and the indifference towards women by Victor will be seen as a factor which makes him turn to other studies of interest so that he creates his own desire of science which results in the birth of the monster. In Carmilla, on the other hand, the unleashing of Carmilla’s sexual power will be seen as the driving force for the two young ladies to pursue a queer romantic path. In the introduction, the theme of queerness in gothic literature will be explored from the perspective of lesbian feminism and queer theory. Queerness will be read as a recurring theme in gothic literature as an eerie motif that is considered as something to be avoided and escaped from. In the first chapter, Shelley’s Frankenstein will be reinterpreted with the analysis of the women characters and the relationship between Victor Frankenstein and his creature. What this study will demonstrate is that Dr Frankenstein’s uneasy attraction to the monstrous creature might be considered as “queer” and the motif of women’s desire as the driving force. In other words, female characters’ suppressed desires will be demonstrated as the driving force to queerness. These characters will be such as but not limited to Elizabeth and Mrs. Frankenstein. In the second chapter, Le Fanu’s Carmilla will be examined with regard to lesbian feminism and queer theory. The characters will be analyzed in accordance to their sexual desires, and the romantic relationship between Laura and Carmilla will be evaluated and again will be found as queer. Female characters’ sexual tendencies will be scrutinized and identified as overpowered and unleashed in Carmilla’s case though being propulsive force to lesbianism. After the analyses of the works, there will be a comparison of the homosexual attractions in Frankenstein and Carmilla and how these works portray the attraction of a monster will be shown. It will be concluded that the sexual orientation of the characters, their interest to the nonhuman and certain parallel motifs in the novels point out the queerness of the works. The empowerment of women’s desires will be also found repressed in the first work, whereas this is unleashed in the latter although giving the same result that is queerness.

YÖK TEZ NO: 10545886 This thesis examines the ecofeminist elements present in Doris Lessing’s debut novel The Grass is Singing and its film adaptation, The Killing Heat, directed by Michael Raeburn, with a special focus on the themes of patriarchy, racism, capitalism, and colonialism. It interlocks these themes with environmental and feminist issues, particularly in the context of the Rhodesian landscape depicted in both mediums. Rhodesia is a land-locked country where environmental changes have been observed as a direct consequence of colonial exploitation and domination. The effects of environmental degradation such as drought, food shortage and water scarcity have impacted not only human but also non-human entities as propounded by the ecofeminist theory. The thesis aims to shed light on the multiple perspectives and approaches employed by the author and the director in addressing the complex interplay between gender, race, class, and the environment. Both the novel and the film present simultaneous domination and exploitation of women and nature at the hands of patriarchal, colonial and capitalist injustices. They represent, if not critique, the violent and unjustified domination of African landscape by colonial pursuits under the guise of a well-celebrated mission of civilizing the savage and taming the wild. The first chapter traces the historical evolution of ecofeminism and its relevance to the analysis of The Grass is Singing and The Killing Heat. The second chapter looks at the novel, with a focus on the ecofeminist elements that are present in it. The final chapter examines The Killing Heat, by exploring how ecofeminist elements in the novel are translated onto the screen. The study discovers that ecofeminism is a relevant theoretical framework for the analysis of both works. Ultimately, the present thesis contributes to the scarce research on ecofeminism and provides new insight into the ecofeminist analysis of literature and film.

In the dystopian tradition, control over the lives and bodies of individuals is realized through several techniques. In Naomi Alderman’s The Power (2016) and Sophie Mackintosh’s The Water Cure (2018), such relationship between the physical body and the influence upon other people within the limitations of the body are the central issues discussed. Female characters in both texts begin to change their perspective about power over other male characters soon after they realize the changes within their body. In The Power, this becomes possible through the skein, the electrical power discovered within only women’s bodies, which becomes deadly for men. This type of physical power is gradually transformed into an imbalanced political and social power. So, the skein becomes an embodied power, which can be interpreted as a form of agency from the perspective of new materialism. In The Water Cure, the unexpected absence of patriarchal figures leads the female protagonists to quit routine practices such as water rituals that are assumed to keep them away from the deadly toxins of the world outside. The real existence of electrical power and the hypothetical existence of toxins in these texts indicate that such nonhuman matters contribute to determining the whole political and social systems. Regarding these issues, studies mainly about new materialism, power and gender relations are included in this study to demonstrate that power and gender relations can be closely related to individuals’ relation to nonhuman matter and the material world. In light of these, this thesis aims to indicate that the double meanings of “toxicity” and “power” are deeply interconnected to each other in that the literal meaning of power and toxicity has repercussions in the understanding of their figurative meanings, which results in dystopian worlds endowed with toxic people and manipulative powerful individuals.

YÖK Tez No: 10487438 The subject of this thesis is to examine ecofeminist and ecofascist viewpoints in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and its TV adaptation by Bruce Miller. As a sub-concept of ecocriticism, ecofeminism proclaims that the oppression of women and victimization of non-human nature stems from patriarchal mindset. Men need to keep women and non-human nature under control, because they see themselves as superior. As another sub-concept of ecocriticism, ecofascism is based on the far-right ideologies and it asserts that the individuals need to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the environment. Therefore, the destruction of environment and infertility causes the emergence of ecofeminist and ecofascist glimpses in The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and its TV adaptation. While both the novel and the TV adaptation focus on the problems of women and non-human nature, they also highlight the inequality in authoritarian patriarchal power. The aim of this thesis is to understand and interpret the predicted dystopian future alternative with ecofeminism and ecofascism, which are theories and methods proper for examining the most vital problems of the world, through a speculative fictional work and its adaptation. For this, first of all, the history and perspective of ecofeminist and ecofascist theory are examined. Then, Margaret Atwood's work and its TV adaptation are discussed with the help of these theories. Erkekler kendilerini kadınların ve insan harici canlıların hamisi kabul eder ve onlar üzerinde tahakküm kurma ihtiyacı duyarlar. James Graham Ballard was a contemporary British novelist who published a wide variety of works ranging from climate fiction to transgressive fiction. “The Ultimate City” (1976) is one of Ballard’s short stories that portrays a dystopian vision where a utopian urban experiment transforms into a catastrophe. The story tells the attempt of the protagonist, Halloway and his company to reanimate a city that was abandoned years ago due to oil depletion. Halloway aims to bring the city back to life through the limited amount of oil left in the city, only to confront chaos and disorder. Using the concepts of Ecotopia and petroculture, this article aims to explore the ways in which oil shapes and destroys modern societies and possible alternatives to this predicament in Ballard’s work. To this end, after a theoretical discussion of these concepts, the article examines the ecotopian features in the ecological community in the text and compares it to the consumerist culture of the metropolis; and later addresses the problem of oil that is an essential component of modern urban life. This part of the article reveals the degree of dependence on oil and the transformative power associated with it through examples from the story. The article argues that “The Ultimate City” is a premonition to the reader concerning the current energy politics that may culminate in a total disaster unless necessary steps are taken., James Graham Ballard, iklim kurgudan sınır aşımına kadar geniş bir yelpazede kurgusal eserler kaleme alan çağdaş bir İngiliz romancıdır. Halloway şehirde kalan kısıtlı miktarda petrol ile kenti yeniden yaşama döndürmeyi amaçlamaktadır ki bu amaç beraberinde sadece kaos ve karmaşa getirecektir. Makale, Ekotopya ve petrokültür kavramlarından yola çıkarak Ballard’ın eserinde petrolün modern toplumları nasıl şekillendirdiğini ve yok ettiğini inceleyecektir. Bu bağlamda, söz konusu kavramların teorik tartışmasının akabininde makale, öyküde bahsedilen ekolojik toplumun ekotopik özelliklerini irdelemekte ve bunları metropolisin tüketim kültürü ile karşılaştırmaktadır. Buna müteakip olarak, modern kentsel yaşamın vazgeçilmez bir unsuru olan petrol meselesi ele alınmaktadır. Çalışmanın bu kısmı petrole duyulan bağımlılık düzeyini ve bununla bağlantılı olarak petrolün dönüştürücü gücünü öyküden verilen örneklerle açığa çıkarmaktadır. Makale, “The Ultimate City”nin okura, gerekli önlemler alınmadığı takdirde güncel enerji politikalarının muazzam bir felakete yol açabileceğine dair öngörülü uyarısını aktardığını öne sürmektedir.

In the nineteenth century, which was dominated by the moral values of the society, women were subjected to patriarchal discourses in many fields of their lives due to the strict social norms and gender-based definition of social roles. Literary works of the nineteenth century also describe the secondary positions of women. The representation of women in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession suggests that women in these plays have adopted masculine attitudes to achieve their independent identities. Thus, women characters in the selected plays are portrayed as mad by the playwrights of the works in order to alienate them from society because madness becomes a gendered illness in this period. Furthermore, it is argued and illustrated in this study that women in these plays adopt masculine qualities in order to express characters’ strengths. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that women are alienated from society through the label of “madness” if they reject the cultural norms. Two plays based on the nineteenth-century point of view towards women are analysed within the frame of the concept of female madness. The selected plays also exhibit women’s enslavement and representation in a patriarchal society. In this context, this study concludes that female madness has been a feint illness to suppress women in the nineteenth century.

Bu tez aşağılık duygusunun ve yakınlık ihtiyacının farklı durumlarda farklı olaylar şeklinde Prufrock ve Don Juan'ın mantalitesi üzerindeki etkilerini keşfetmektedir. İki karakter de içinde bulundukları topluluklarına karşı kırılgandırlar fakat farklı tepkiler vermekte ve başa çıkmada farklı yöntemler seçmektedirler. Aşağılık hisleri, cinsellik ve yakınlık ihtiyacı iki karakter için de aynı iken böyle bir yük ve arzuyla başa çıkma şekli kişiliklere bağlıdır. Bu çalışma, Don Juan'ın öğrendiğini ve aşağılık Duygusuna adapte olduğunu ve bunları telafi edebildiğini gösterirken, pasif bir karakter olan Prufrock'ın amaçları doğrultusunda nasıl harekete geçme kabiliyetine sahip olmadığını ve aşağılık kompleksi yaşadığını göstermektedir. Don Juan, cinsel açıdan tatmin olmaktadır ancak sürekli kendi kırılganlığına yenilmektedir. Bu da göstermektedir ki Prufrock'un bastırılmış cinsel arzuları tatmin olduğunda onun rahatsız aklı iyileşmeyecektir. This thesis explores the effect of the inferiority feelings and the need for intimacy upon the mentality of Prufrock and Don Juan as different cases in different situations. Both personas suffer from their vulnerability toward their societies yet they react differently and choose different methods in compensations. The inferiority feelings and the need for sexual activities and intimacy are the same for each persona, but the way of handling such burden and desire lays completely on the persona itself. This study shows how Prufrock, a passive character, suffers from his inability to act toward his goals and get trapped in an inferiority complex, while Don Juan learns and adapts himself to live wth his inferiorities and compensate them at the end. The sexual need of Don Juan is fulfilled but he keeps falling as a victim to his vulnerability, which shows that Prufrock's repressed sexual desires will not cure his disturbed mentality in case they are fulfilled. Understanding the movements that these poems belong to and analyzing the two personas' backgrounds, societies and surrounding characters are key elements in understanding these personas' mentality. The thesis will focus on the psychological theory of Alfred Adler, and Individual Psychology. This theory is used as an interpretation method in order to understand the two personas' situations and behaviors. The study works on spotting the inferiority feelings in each persona and analyzing their personalities, goals and social interests accordingly. 83

Bu tez, İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının öz-yeterlik ve öğretim becerilerinin geliştirilmesinde yansıtıcı koçluğun (YK) etkisini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışmada kullanılan yansıtıcı koçluk programı (rehber eşliğinde yansıtıcı öğretim), araştırmacı tarafından 2016 yılında, büyük ölçüde yansıtmanın temel ilkeleri, güçlü ve zayıf yanların öz-analizi, yansıtma ilkeleri, kişisel ifadelerin yazımı ve yansıtıcı öğretime dayandırılarak geliştirilip uyarlanmıştır. Bu çalışma için kullanılan araştırma yöntemi hem nicel hem de nitel olup, çalışma ön/son test tasarımına dayanan bir tek vaka çalışmasıdır. Bu araştırmaya 21-22 yaşları arasında, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi, Eğitim Fakültesi'nde İngilizce Öğretmenliği lisans programına devam etmekte olan sekiz gönüllü (bir erkek ve yedi kadın) öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın ön/son test tasarımı için bir vaka çalışması grubu oluşturulmuştur. Çalışma, 11 Şubat 2019 ve 17 Mayıs 2019 tarihleri arasında yapılmıştır. Katılımcılar, Türkiye'de öğretmen yetiştirme programları için zorunlu olan Öğretmenlik Uygulaması dersini yaparken araştırmaya katılmışlardır. Veriler dersin uygulama sürecinde toplanmış olup, veri toplamadan önce, araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan öğretmen değerlendirmesi ve yansıtıcı koçluk konulu 15 saatlik bir eğitim verilmiştir. Niteliksel çalışmaların özelliklerini dikkate alarak, araştırmacı, çalışmanın bütün aşamalarına hem araştırmacı hem de yansıtıcı bir koç olarak aktif bir şekilde katılmıştır. (YK) programının uygulanması sırasında, araştırmacı istendik öğretim davranışları temsil eden üç farklı öğretim becerisi üzerinde özellikle durmuştur. Bu bağlamda, birinci ölçme aracı olarak, (YK) programının her öğretim becerisinin gelişimi üzerindeki etkilerini görmek için, 26 maddelik üç temel öğretim becerisinden (Planlama, Kişisel ve Mesleki Nitelikler, Uygulama) oluşan Ders Sonrası Yansıtıcı Öz Değerlendirme Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. İkinci ölçme aracı olarak, etkinlik yapma kapasitesine sahip bir öğretmen adayının daha dinamik ve kendisinin belirleyeceği öğretmenlik şeklini uygulayabileceği varsayıldığı için, Öğretmen Öz-yeterlilik Ölçeği (uzun form) kullanılmıştır. Bu iki araç hem ön değerlendirme hem de sonrası değerlendirme için kullanılmıştır. Üçüncü ölçme aracı olarak uygulama sonunda yararlanmak üzere araştırmacı tarafından öğretmen adaylarının yansıtıcı koçluk programından memnuniyetlerini değerlendirmek için hazırlanan açık uçlu sorular içeren bir değerlendirme anketi ve uygulama boyunca öğretmen adayları tarafından tutulan yansıtıcı günlükler, yansıtıcı koç ile öğretmen adayları arasında geçen konuşmaların kayıtları ve araştırmacının tuttuğu günlük kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca, bütün dersler veri analizi için videoya kaydedilmiştir. The reflective coaching program (guided reflective teaching) used in this study was developed and adapted by the researcher in 2016 mainly based on the theoretical views and principles of reflection, self-analysis of strengths and weaknesses and the writing of personal statements, and reflective teaching. The research approach used for this study was both quantitative and qualitative and this study is a single case study based on pre/post-test design. To achieve this goal, eight volunteer male and female (one male and seven female) undergraduate students, aged from 21 to 22, attending B.A. program in ELT, Faculty of Education, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey participated in the study. For the pre/post-test design of this study, one case study group was formed. The study was conducted between February 11, 2019 and May 17, 2019. The participants participated in the study while they were doing Teaching Practice course, which is essential for teacher education program in Turkey. The data were collected during the Teaching Practicum course. Before the data collection, the 15-hour training on teacher evaluation and reflective coaching prepared by the researcher was held prior to the treatment by the researcher. Considering the nature of qualitative studies, the researcher was personally and actively involved in all stages of the study as both as a researcher and a reflective coach. During the implementation of the (RC) program, the researcher also employed an overview of the instructional skills, which represented teaching behaviors desired. Within this context, the Self-Assessment Tool for Post-Lesson Reflection consisting of three main instructional skills with 26 items (Planning, Personal and Professional Qualities, Implementation) was be utilized as the first instrument to see effects of the treatment on development of each instructional skill. The second instrument utilized in this study was the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (long form) supposing that a student teacher with a capacity to produce an event could manage more dynamic and self-determined teaching. These two instruments were used for both pre and post assessment. As the third instrument, an evaluation questionnaire with open-ended questions prepared by the researcher to assess the student teachers' satisfaction with the reflective coaching program after the treatment and the reflective diary sheets, the recordings of the interactions of the student teachers with the reflective coach and the diary kept by the researcher was employed during the treatment. All the lessons were video-recorded for the analysis of the data. Bu tezin amacı Samuel Selvon'un The Lonely Londoners, Moses Ascending ve Moses Migrating üçlemesinde anlatıcının kullandığı dil üzerinden Modernist edebiyat ve sömürgecilik sonrası (postkolonyal) edebiyata ait ortak unsurların araştırılmasıdır. Bu üç romanda da yazar dil ile bazı deneysel çalışmalar yapmış, sömürgecilik dönemine ait olarak ortaya koymak istediklerini, kullandığı ya da oluşturduğu özel dil ile ifade etmeyi tercih etmiş, böylelikle sömürgecilik sonrası döneme ait bulgularını kendine özgü yöntemlerle ortaya koymak suretiyle eserlerinde Modernizm akımı ile sömürgecilik sonrası dönem arasında bir köprü kurmuştur.Tezin teori bölümünde, teze konu olan romanların tarihsel bağlamı içerisinde anlaşılmasını sağlamak amacıyla sömürgecilik sonrası döneme ait tarihsel bilgi sunulmuş, postkolonyal kuramların ve postkolonyal edebiyatın kavramsal temelleri üzerinde durulmuş, edebiyatta Modernizm akımının gelişimi ile ilgili bilgi verilerek bu iki akımın hangi yönlerden kesiştiklerine dair bir tartışmaya yer verilmiştir. Analitik bölümlerde, The Lonely Londoners, Moses Ascending ve Moses Migrating romanlarında anlatıcı tarafından kullanılan kendine has dilin, adı geçen edebi akımların ortak yönlerinin ortaya konulması bakımından ne gibi bir önem taşıdığı üzerinde durulmuştur.Sonuç olarak, Samuel Selvon'un bu üç romanda anlatım dili olarak lehçe kullanmasının, dönemin edebi akımları açısından deneysel ve öncü bir çalışma olduğu, bu durumun gerek postkolonyal gerekse Modernist edebiyat için önemli anlamlar ifade ettiği, Selvon'un dil ve lehçe teması üzerinden hem postkolonyal hem de Modernist edebiyatın ortak konusu olan `yurtsuzluk` ve `yalnızlık` temalarını son derece etkin bir şekilde işlediği anlaşılmıştır.Anahtar kelimeler: Lehçe, Deneysellik, Melezlik, Modernizm, Postkolonyal This aim of this thesis is to analyze the extent to which certain aspects of postcolonial literatüre in Samuel Selvon's The Lonely Londoners, Moses Ascending and Moses Migrating converges with elements of Modernism, through an exploration of the dialect employed in the narration of these three novels. In all of them, Selvon opts to experiment with language to the extent that he conveys his postcolonial agenda through this fabricated language, turning his unprecedented linguistic experimentation into a bridge between the postcolonial and Modernist remits.The theoretical chapter presents a brief account of the historical context of the postcolonial period, the foundation and concepts basic to postcolonial theory. A brief discussion of the relationship between Modernist literature and postcolonial literature has also been provided. In the analytical chapters, the significance of the unique and hybridized register employed by the narrators of The Lonely Londoners, Moses Ascending and Moses Migrating in relation to the conveyal of the major points of convergence between Modernist and postcolonial liteartures is studied in detail.It is concluded that Modernism and postcolonialism intersect at two major points: experimentalism and the concept of dislocation, which are expressed in and symbolized by Selvon's employment of a fabricated and hybrid dialect in the narration of his three novels.Keywords: Dialect, Experimentation, Hybridity, Modernism, Postcolonialism 91

İnsanoğlu varlığının başlangıcından beri doğa ile ilişki içindedir. Bu ilişkinin ilk dönemlerinde doğaya karşı savunmasız olan insan, onun kurallarına göre, onunla uyum içinde yaşamıştır. Çevresinde meydana gelen doğal olaylarla ilgili sınırlı bilgisi bulunan insan bu olaylara anlamlar yüklemiştir. İnsan için doğa; onu koruyan, sığınak ve yiyecek veren yüce bir güç anlamına gelmekteydi. Ancak her geçen gün doğa ile ilgili bilgisi artan insan kendisini doğadan üstün olarak görmeye ve doğayı istediği şekilde sömürüye başlamıştır. Bu düşünce çevreyle ilgili sorunların temelini oluşturmuş, özellikle, insanı merkeze alan, aydınlanma çağı ve sonrasında gelen sanayi devrimi ile birlikte insanın doğayı kendi çıkarları için tahrip etmesinin geri döndürülemez sonuçlarının başlangıcı olmuştur. Bu sonuçların kendisine zarar verdiğini fark eden insan, doğaya verdiği zararı telafi etmek için çeşitli yollar aramaya başlamıştır. Edebiyat, insanın çevre ile olan ilişkini yazılı olarak ortaya koymuş, birçok yazar insana çevre bilinci kazandırmak için sayısız eserler yazmışlardır. Bunu sonucunda da çevreci eleştiri kuramı ve onun alt dalarından biri olan ekoşiir akımı başlamıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı eko-eleştirinin alt dallarından olan eko-şiirin ortaya çıkışı, kökeni, gelişimi ve çevreyle ilgili şiirin günümüzdeki durumunu incelemektir. Bunun yanında ekoeleştiri ile ilgili de kapsamlı bir inceleme yapılacaktır. Sonraki bölümde Türkiye ve Dünyadan farklı şairlere ait şiirlerin ekoşiir açısından incelemeleri yapılacak. Being vulnerable in the early stages of this relationship, humankind lived according to the rules of nature and in harmony with it. He attributed meanings to the natural phenomenon occurred around him for he had limited knowledge of what was happening. Nature was symbolizing an incredible power that was providing and giving him not only shelter but food as well. However, man increased his knowledge about nature each passing day, which led him to see himself as superior to nature and began exploiting nature as he wished. This increase led him to see himself as superior to nature and he began exploiting nature as he wished. The thought that man considered himself superior to nature formed the basis of ecological problems and it was the beginning of irreversible consequences of human destruction of nature for his own benefit, especially with the age of enlightenment's human-centered ideas and the subsequent industrial revolution. When humankind has realized that the exploitation of nature ultimately harms him, he has started to look for ways to compensate for the harm that he has done to nature. Literature has put forward the relation of humans with the environment in written works, and many writers have written numerous works in order to raise the environmental awareness of humans. As a result of this conscious raising, ecocritical theory and one of its sub-disciplines ecopoetry began to flourish all over the world. The purpose of this study is to study the emergence, origin, development, and status of ecopoetry a subset of ecocriticism. Furthermore, the aim of this study is to reveal a comprehensive review of ecocriticism. In the final chapter, I will try to analyze poems of various ecopoets through an ecopoetic perspective. Bu çalışmanın amacı, İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi'nin TÖMER merkezinde Arap öğrencilerin nasıl Türkçe öğrendiklerini bulmaktı. Bu çalışmada Türkçe-Arapça dil alaşımı uygulamaları ve katılımcıların tutumları örneklerle belirlenmiştir. Çalışmaya 19-26 yaş arası 38 katılımcı dahil edildi. Çalışmanın odak noktası, birçok öğrencinin Türkçe ve Arapça sözlükler ile telaffuzlar arasındaki benzerlikler nedeniyle yazım hataları ve telaffuz hataları ile karşılaşmalarıydı. Bu nedenle, aşağıdaki araştırma sorularının cevabı üzerinde çalıştık:1. TÖMER öğrencileri dil alaşımı pratiğini hangi ortak yoldan takip ediyorlar?2. Öğrenciler Türkçe-Arapça dil alaşımı tekniğini ne ölçüde uyguluyorlar?3. Öğrencilerin dil alaşımında engeller nelerdir?4. Dil alaşımı ve kod değiştirme tek bir dilde mi çalışıyor?Veri toplamak için katılımcılar çeşitli dil soruları içeren bir anket doldurdular. Anket zamanı katılımcılar hakkında genel bilgi istenerek, konuşma sorunları sorgulandı ve daha sonra Türkçe iletişim kurma çalışmalarındaki engelleri tespit etme yeteneklerini ortaya çıkardı. Grup toplantısı görüşmesi, öğrencilerin fikirlerini sözlü olarak tartışma ve ifade etme, dil alaşımı pratiğine daha ayrıntılı ve tanımlayıcı bir tutum sunma fırsatı buldukları gerekli bilgileri toplamanın ikinci aracıydı. Mülakatlar araştırmacının geliştirilen anket soruları hakkında çok kısa cevaplar almasına yardımcı oldu. Elde edilen veriler, öğrencilerin dil alaşımında bir tür karıştırma kodu haline geldiğini göstermektedir. Sonuçlar, öğrenciler arasındaki çevirinin Türkçe ve Arapça arasında bir çeşit karıştırma kodu haline geldiğini gösterdi.Ayrıca, dil alaşımının kolaylaştırıldığı, ancak her iki dil arasındaki benzerlikler tarafından karıştırıldığı sonucuna varılmıştır; ilgili dilleri kullanırken kolaylaştırılır, ancak yanlış ilgili dilleri kullanırken karışır ve böylece birçok öğrenci yeniden bağlamsallaştırma stratejisine başvurur. Öğrenciler, karmaşık ve belirsiz dilbilgisi kurallarını ve yeni öğrenilen ifadeleri, bu yapıları gelecekte kullanabilmeleri için Türk bağlamını anlamalarına uygun bir şekilde yeniden yarattılar.Anahtar Kelimeler: Dil Alaşımı, İkinci Dil Edinimi, Kod Değişimi, İki Dillilik, Çok Dillilik The purpose of this research was to investigate how Arab students acquire Turkish language at the TÖMER center of Istanbul Aydin University. This research identified Turkish-Arabic translanguaging practices, and the attitudes of the participants were reported and supported by examples. The study engaged 38 participants with ages ranging between 19- 26. The focus of the research was centered on the fact that so many students encounter mispronunciation and misunderstanding problems because of the similarity between Turkish and Arabic vocabularies and pronunciations. For this reason, we worked on answering the following research questions:1. What is the prevalent way that TÖMER students follow in order to practice translanguaging?2. To which extent do the students practice the Turkish-Arabic translanguaging technique?3. What kind of translanguaging obstacles do the students encounter?4. Are Translanguaging and code-switching practiced both at once during the class?In order to collect the data, the participants were asked to fill in a survey comprising several language-relevant questions. The survey questions solicited general information about the participants, questioned their speaking difficulties, and then probed their aptitude for the encountered obstacles when communicating in Turkish. A focus group interview was the second instrument in collecting the required information where students had the opportunity to discuss and express their ideas verbally and offer more detailed and descriptive attitudes towards the translanguaging practice. The interview supported the researcher to reach very concise responses about the developed questions of the survey. The findings indicated that students' translanguaging has turned to be a kind of code-mixing between Turkish and Arabic. Moreover, it was deduced that translanguaging was facilitated but confused by the similarity between both languages; facilitated when using cognates but confused when using false cognates, and thus, many students were resorting to the strategy of recontextualization. The students recontextualized difficult and vague rules of grammar as well as newly-learned expressions in a way that would fit their understandings of the Turkish context in order to be able to use these structures in the future.Key Words: Translanguaging, second language acquisition, code-switching, bilingualism, multilingualism 76

Debbie Tucker Green (doğum tarihi bilinmiyor- ) yirmi birinci yüzyılın önde gelensiyahi Britanyalı oyun yazarlarından biridir. Oyunlarında genellikle, ırksal kimlikkavramını vurgulamadan, Afrika, Britanya ve Karayipler'de yaşayan siyahi insanlarınulusal ve uluslararası sorunlarına değinir. Yazar, Stoning Mary (2005) adlı oyununda,genellikle Afrikalıların yaşadığı AIDS problemini, çocukların askerleştirilmesini ve birceza türü olan taşlayarak öldürmeyi konu alır. Random (2008) adlı oyununda iseLondra'da yaşayan siyahi bir gencin bıçaklanarak öldürülmesine değinir. Söz konusueserlerde, değinilen problemlerden çok, bu problemlerin karakterler ve hayatlarıüzerindeki etkileri ön plana çıkmaktadır. Bu iki oyundaki karakterler bir aile üyesinikaybetme, şiddet ve travma unsurlarıyla mücadele ederler. Ayrıca Tucker Greenbahsedilen unsurları, Stoning Mary adlı oyunda birbirine ilgisiz karakterler ve bukarakterlerin iletişim sorunu aracılığıyla, Random isimli oyunda ise karakterlerin dahaçok iç seslerine ve düşüncelerine vurgu yaparak sunar. Dolayısıyla, bu tez Stoning Maryve Random adlı oyunlarda yaşanılan kayıpları, şiddeti ve travmayı yazarın stilini de gözönünde bulundurarak bir sebep-sonuç ilişkisi içerisinde incelemektedir. Tezin girişbölümünde Debbie Tucker Green'in katkısını daha iyi yansıtmak amacıyla Britanyalısiyahi yazarların ürettiği tiyatronun tarihsel gelişimine bakılmaktadır. İkinci ana bölümde, buüç unsur arasındaki ilişki Random'da incelenmeye devam edilmekte ve şiddet sebebiyletravmatik bir kayıp yaşayan oyun karakterlerinin şiddetten farklı tepkiler verdiklerininaltı çizilmektedir. Son olarak, tezin sonuç bölümünde, bu iki oyunda yaşanan kayıplarınağır travma yaratan kayıplar olduğu ifade edilmekte ve Stoning Mary'de travmatikkaybın sonucu şiddetken, Random'da karakterlerin kızgınlık ve sersemlik hissedip,etrafındaki insanlardan kaçındıklarının altı çizilmektedir. Debbie Tucker Green (date of birth unknown- ) is a prolific black British playwright ofthe twenty-first century. In her plays, she explores the local and global problems ofblack people living in Britain, Africa, and the Caribbean without underlining racialidentity. Her play Stoning Mary (2005) presents the issues of AIDS, child soldiering,and stoning punishment that primarily African people encounter; Random (2008)depicts the murder of a black teenage boy in London. Tucker Green mostly presents theeffects of violence, trauma, and loss, which the above issues cause, on the characters'lives. Rather than discussing the reasons for these issues, she portrays their emotionalaftermath. In addition, Tucker Green explores these issues by focusing on uncaringcharacters and their failure of communication in Stoning Mary, and the characters' innervoices and thoughts in Random. Therefore, this thesis analyses Stoning Mary andRandom, in terms of both content and style, to examine Tucker Green's representationof loss, violence, and trauma, and discusses that these issues are given in a cause andeffect relationship in the plays. The introduction of this study provides the historicalbackground of black British drama in order to reflect Tucker Green's contribution to itbetter. The first chapter analyses the relationship between loss, violence, and trauma inStoning Mary. In this play, the characters experience a traumatic loss because ofviolence, and this situation also leads to violence. In the second main chapter, the samerelationship between traumatic loss and violence is examined in Random, in whichtraumatic loss results from violence, but it causes different responses of grief other thanviolence. Consequently, in the conclusion part, it is highlighted that the losses that thecharacters experience in both plays are quite traumatic because of their violent andunexpected nature, and they lead to various responses of grief. While loss caused byviolence also leads to violence in Stoning Mary, traumatic loss resulting from violenceproduces other reactions such as numbness, anger, and avoidance in Random. 123

Bu tez, hapishaneler, hastaneler, okullar ve askeriye gibi hepsi güç ve disipline dayalı devlet kurumlarını merkeze alan, Tom Stoppard'ın Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, Arnold Wesker'ın Chips with Everything, Harold Pinter'ın The Hothouse ve Aziz Nesin'in Yaşar Ne Yaşar Ne Yaşamaz oyunlarını çalışmaktadır. Başka bir deyişle, bu oyunlar en Foucaultcu tecellileriyle devlet kurumlarında geçmekte ve bu kurumlarla ilgilenmektedir. Bu açıdan bu oyunların kayda değer bir soruyla meşgul olmaları gerekecektir: Eğer makinenin hususi gücü tam da gücünün görünmezliğinde, işlemlerinin gösterişsizliğinde yatıyorsa, panoptik makine nasıl sahnelenebilir? Bu soruyla mücadele eden bu dört oyunda bazı ortak tematik ögeler ve dramatik stratejiler gözlemlenebilir. Bu tez tematik açıdan bu dört oyunu dil, görünürlük ve duygusallık bazında inceleyecektir. Form açısındansa, bu oyunların sahnelenmelerinde müzik ve mizahın ağırlığı da dahil olmak üzere verdiği kararlar, kurumların gücünün hususi olarak gösterişsiz ve ince yapılanmasına cevap niteliğindedir. Bu tez, bu dört oyundaki kurum ve enstitülerin temsilini çalışmakta, böylece kurumlar konusunda tiyatronun temsili olasılık ve sınırlarını anlamayı hedeflemektedir. `We are neither in the amphitheater nor on the stage, but in the panoptic machine,` Foucault observes. Yet the stage remains steadily interested in the panoptic machine. Hubs of institutional power continue to concern playwrights, as discipline and surveillance are turned into spectacles on stage. This thesis studies Every Good Boy Deserves Favour by Tom Stoppard, Chips with Everything by Arnold Wesker, The Hothouse by Harold Pinter and Yaşar Ne Yaşar Ne Yaşamaz by Aziz Nesin—all plays that are centered around institutions of power and discipline, such as prisons, hospitals, schools and military complexes. In other words, these plays take place in, and are concerned with, institutions in their most Foucauldian incarnations. In this, they have to engage with a considerable question: How does one put the panoptic machine onto the stage, if the peculiar power of the machine lies in its invisibility, in its unspectacular nature, in the subtlety of its operation? In these four plays, we can mark common thematic concerns and dramatic strategies as they grapple with these questions. Thematically, language, visibility and sentiment constitute particularly productive venues of analysis in this examination. Formally, certain structural and tonal choices in the plays' staging, including utilizations of music and humor, respond to the peculiarly unspectacular and subtle formulation of institutional power. This thesis studies representations of institutions in these works, to find how their dramatic strategies respond to the many contradictions of institutional power, in order to understand the representative limits and possibilities of theater. 141

İnsanı merkeze konumlandırmayan bir bakış açısıyla hareket eden güncel posthümanist teorilerden yola çıkan bu çalışma çağdaş İngiliz şairleri Mario Petrucci ve Alice Oswald'ın şiirlerini inceleler ve bu şairlerin, insanın tahakküm eden bir özne olarak görülemeyeceği posthüman mekân temsilleri yarattığını ve posthüman şiir türünde örnekler verdiğini savunur. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, Petrucci'nin posthüman şiirinin daha çok Antroposen çağın ekolojik sorunlarına değindiğini ve böylece insanın eyleyici gücünün bu sorunların yol açtığı yıkıcı sonuçlar tarafından nasıl iktidarsızlaştırıldığını gösterir. Posthüman teori bağlamında ele alındığında Petrucci, Bosco (1999), Heavy Water: A Poem for Chernobyl (2004) ve Half Life: Poems for Chernobyl (2004) eserlerinde ormanların yok edilmesi, küresel ısınma ve Çernobil nükleer faciası karşısında insan merkezli düşüncenin nasıl erozyona uğradığını betimler ve insan/insan olmayan karşıtlığını sorgular. Bu eserlerde Petrucci ağaçların ve radyoaktif parçacıkların eyleyici gücüne dikkat çekerek, insan olmayan maddeleri pasif konuma indirgeyen yaygın görüşe karşı çıkar. Benzer şekilde, Alice Oswald okuyucuyu doğanın insan merkezli temsilinin ötesine taşıyarak posthüman şiir türünde örnekler verir. Şairin, insanın biricikliğini olumsuzlayan Dart (2002) eserinde, insanın ve Dart Nehri'nin seslerinin birbirine karıştığı polifonik bir örgü yarattığı görülmektedir. Severn Haliç'inde buluşan insan ve insan olmayan varlıklar ile ay döngüsü arasındaki öznelerarası ve etkileşimsel geçişe vurgu yapan Oswald'ın A Sleepwalk on the Severn (2009) eseri de özne/nesne ayrımını, iletişimsel bir zemin üzerine inşa edilen oluşum halindeki posthüman mekân temsili üzerinden reddeder. Böylece, bu çalışma Petrucci ve Oswald'ı bir araya getirerek, insan-insan olmayan, özne-nesne, ben-öteki ikiliksizliği arasındaki beden-ötesi cisimci ve çoksesli dolanıma dikkat çeker ve edebi bir araç olarak şiirin günümüz dünyasının sınırlı insan merkezli görüşünü değiştirmeye nasıl yardımcı olabileceğini göstermeyi amaçlar.Anahtar Sözcükler: Çağdaş İngiliz Şiiri, Posthümanizm, Mario Petrucci, Bosco, Heavy Water: A Poem for Chernobyl, Half Life: Poems for Chernobyl, Alice Oswald, Dart, A Sleepwalk on the Severn In the light of recent theories of posthumanism that promote a non-anthropocentric perspective, this study examines the poems of contemporary British poets Mario Petrucci and Alice Oswald and argues that they write posthuman poetry which represents posthuman space(s) of becoming, where the human and the nonhuman worlds exist on a non-hierarchical basis. This study thus shows that Petrucci's posthuman poetry is mainly concerned with representing the ecological problems observed in the Anthropocene, and it illustrates how the human agency is dwarfed by the destructive consequences generated in the ecosystem. In a posthuman context, therefore, Petrucci problematizes the human/nonhuman binary by demonstrating the erosion of the anthropocentric world view in the face of environmental crises such as deforestation, global warming, and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Bosco (1999), Heavy Water: A Poem for Chernobyl (2004) and Half Life: Poems for Chernobyl (2004). In these collections, Petrucci underscores the agentic properties of trees and radioactive particles, and thereby challenges the prevalent view of nonhuman matter as a passive entity. Likewise, Alice Oswald introduces a posthuman poetry which moves the reader beyond the human-centred treatment of the natural world. Negating human exceptionalism, Oswald's Dart (2002) offers a polyphonic meshwork where the voices of alternating human speakers and that of the River Dart flow into one another in a posthuman space. Underlining intersubjective and dialogic interchange between human and nonhuman inhabitants of the Severn Estuary and the lunar cycle, Oswald's A Sleepwalk on the Severn (2009) also disavows the subject/object binary by forming a posthuman space of becoming that involves a communicative framework. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Atatürk Üniversitesi ve Osmaniye Korkut Ata Üniversitesi'nde 2019-2020 Eğitim Öğretim Yılı Bahar Döneminde verilen ve uzaktan eğitimin bir parçası olan, senkron ve asenkron e-dil öğrenimi hakkındaki yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğrenen öğrenci algılarını araştırmaktır. 2019 yılının sonlarında Çin'in Wuhan şehrinde ortaya çıkan koronavirüs (COVID-19) hayatlarımızı oldukça önemli bir şekilde etkiledi. Bu pandeminin bir sonucu olarak, birçok ülkede olduğu gibi Türkiye'deki üniversiteler de eğitim sistemlerini hızlıca e-öğrenme ortamlarına dönüştürdüler. Dolayısıyla, 2019-2020 Eğitim Öğretim Yılı Bahar Yarıyılı mümkün olduğunca sanal öğrenme haline geldi. Bu sanal öğrenmede dersler; senkron, asenkron ve ikisinin karışımı şeklinde verilmektedir. Her ne kadar önceki çalışmalarda dil öğreniminde senkron ve asenkron kavramalarının sık sık kullanıldığına rastlanılsa da günümüz şartlarında öğrencilerin bu değişime karşı yaklaşımları hala merak konusudur. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma öğrencilerin algılarını, tercihlerini, senkron ve asenkron öğrenmenin güçlü ve zayıf noktalarını olduğu kadar geleneksel dil öğrenimi ve e-dil öğrenimi karşılaştırmalarını incelemiştir. Gerekli bilgiler, Osmaniye Korkut Ata Üniversitesi ve Atatürk Üniversitesi İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı öğrencilerinden nitel ve nicel sorular içeren elektronik anket yoluyla edinilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda, katılımcıların senkron ve asenkron dersler hakkında bilgi sahibi olduğu; dil öğreniminde senkron derslerin daha yararlı olduğu; senkron derslerin en güçlü özelliğinin yüz yüze görüşme sağlamakken, en zayıf özelliğinin internet bağlantısı gerektirmesi olduğu; asenkron derslerin ise en güçlü özelliğinin zaman ve mekan kısıtlamasına sahip olmaması iken, en zayıf noktasının yüz yüze görüşme imkanı sağlamaması olduğu; ve son olarak geleneksel dil öğreniminin e-dil öğrenme araçları tarafından desteklenmesi gerektiği sonuçlarına ulaşılmıştır. The aim of this study is to explore perceptions of EFL students on synchronous and asynchronous e-language learning as a part of distance education which is given at Atatürk University and Osmaniye Korkut Ata University in the spring semester of 2019-2020 academic year because of COVID-19 pandemic. Started in Wuhan, China during late 2019, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has affected our lives crucially. As a result of this pandemic, most universities in Turkey, like many other countries, have changed their educational system into e-learning environments swiftly. Therefore, the Spring Semester of 2019-2020 Academic Year was turned into a virtual education as much as possible. In this virtual education, the courses were given synchronously, asynchronously, and the blend of two. Even though previous studies have shown that synchronous learning and asynchronous learning are not uncommon terms in language learning, it is still a wonder how language learners react to these modes especially in today's conditions. Thus, this study aimed to find out the learners' perceptions, their preferences, strengths and weaknesses of synchronous and asynchronous modes as well as a comparison between traditional language learning and e-language learning. The data were gathered from English Language and Literature students at Osmaniye Korkut Ata University and Atatürk University via an electronic questionnaire containing both qualitative and quantitative questions. The study found out that synchronous and asynchronous learning modes were mostly known by the participants; synchronous learning mode was found to be more effective for language learning; while the strongest feature of synchronous learning was thought to be face to face interaction, its weakest feature was named as the need for proper internet connection; the greatest strength of asynchronous mode was being no place/time-bound, while its weakness was named as the lack of face to face interaction; and last but not least, traditional language learning should be supported by e-learning tools. 60

Gearge Bernard Shaw'un Seçilmiş Oyunlarındaki Yeni Kadın Algısı. George Bernard Shaw bir çok oyununda insanın evrimine doğrudan ya da dolaylı olarak değinmiştir fakat Shaw evrimin sürecini uzun bir zaman dilimi olarak ele almıştır. Bu yüzden o `Yaşam Gücü ve Yaratıcı evrim` kavramını geliştirmiştir. Yaşam Gücü bir erkek ve kadının bir süper kahraman yetiştirmesi anlamında doğurganlık fikrine yorulabilir. Üstüninsanın arkaplanında eğitim, düşünme ve belirli tutumlar gibi gayeler vardır ve bu hedeflere ulaşmak için kadın önder bir birey olarak algılanmak zorundadır. Şu aşamada kadın evrim sürecine maruz kalmama meselesinde daha başarılı olsa da, geleneksel kadın algısındaki inanışların aksine, onun kişiliğindeki bazı değişimler daha fazla önem arzetmektedir.Bu yazının amacı Gerage Bernard Shaw'ın seçilmiş oyunlarındaki Yeni Kadın'ın özelliklerini ortaya çıkarmaktır. However, Shaw understands that evolution's due course takes eons. So, he develops the notion of Life Force and Creative Evolution. Life Force exhausts the idea that in procreation, the man and woman are expected to raise a superman. The superman background has a set of objectives, such as education, thinking, and attitude. And in order to achieve this goal, the woman has to be the leading individual. Now, since the woman is the leader in bypassing the process of evolution, certain alteration of her personhood is necessary; in contrast with traditional beliefs of women's personhood. In the case that the woman changes and does not project the exact picture of womanly woman, she becomes a New Woman. And as a New Woman, her task is subscribing to the philosophy of Life Force and exercising Creative Evolution.The aim of this paper is, therefore, tracing the features of the New Woman in selected plays of George Bernard Shaw. In doing so, the concept as to which the New Woman exist is analyzed. The New Woman fellowship to Life Force and Creative Evolution are also taken into consideration. Bu çalışma; biçimlendirici değerlendirmede kullanılan yedi stratejinin uygulanması esnasında ortaya çıkabilecek zorlukların saptanması, çözüm yollarının bulunması ve bu süreçte çeviri dersinin kaynak dil İngilizcenin öğretilmesindeki rolü ve öğrencilerin çeviri dersine karşı tutumlarının bu uygulanan stratejiler bağlamında araştırılmasını amaçlamıştır. Bu amaçla; çalışma bir oluşturmacı yaklaşım bakış açısıyla ilişkilendirilmiş, performansa dayalı ölçme yöntemini kullanan bir durum çalışması üzerine tasarlanmış karma yöntem araştırma desenini kullanmaktadır. Araştırma grubu bir devlet üniversitesindeki Mütercim Tercümanlık bölümünde öğrenim gören birinci sınıf öğrencilerinden seçilmiştir. Katılımcıların bu bölümden seçilme nedeni bütün öğrencilerin ilk kez çeviri dersi almaları ve bu yüzden çeviri dersinde birbirlerine yakın yeterliliğe sahip olmalarıdır. Çalışmada, biçimlendirici değerlendirme stratejilerinin sınıf içinde kullanılmasıyla ilgili araştırmacının gözlemlerini kaydettiği araştırmacı alan notu, her bir çalışmanın tamamlanmasından sonra uygulanan yarı yapılandırılmış odak grup görüşmeleri, öz değerlendirmeden sonra öğrencilerin ne tür değişimler kazandıklarını belirlemek için öğrenci taslakları ve öğrencilerin çeviri dersine karşı tutumlarını ölçmek için Çeviri Dersi Değerlendirme Anketi ve yarı yapılandırılmış ön ve son görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Toplanan verilerin analizinde, araştırmacı nicel ve nitel veri analiz yöntemi kullanmıştır. Bu veri analizi doğrultusunda, öğrencilerin öz değerlendirme sürecinde etkin rol aldıkları, çeviri derslerinde kaynak dil ile erek dil arasındaki eşdeğerliliği oluşturmada ilerleme kat ettikleri gözlemlenmiş ve bu bağlamda çeviri dersine karşı olumlu tutum geliştirdikleri saptanmıştır. Araştırmacı, çalışmanın bulgularını ve sonuçlarını araştırma içeriği ışığında tartışmış ve pedagojik öneriler sunmuştur.Anahtar Kelimeler: Biçimlendirici değerlendirme, Öz değerlendirme, Oluşturmacılık, Çeviri dersleri This study aimed to identify the challenges that might occur during the implementation of the seven strategies used in formative assessment, to find solutions, and to examine the role of the translation course in teaching the source language English and the students' attitudes towards the translation course in the context of these strategies. For this purpose, the study used mixed methods research design, based on a case study using a performance-based measurement method associated with a constructivist approach. The research group was selected from first-year students studying in the Department of Translation and Interpretation at a public university. The reason why the participants were selected from this department was that all students were taking translation courses for the first time and therefore they had similar proficiency levels in the translation classes. In the study, the researcher's field notes, in which he recorded his observations about the use of formative assessment strategies in the classroom; semi-structured focus group interviews, conducted after the completion of each text translation; student drafts, to determine the improvement the students made after self-assessment; and, to examine the students' attitudes towards the translation class, a Translation Class Evaluation Questionnaire and semi-structured pre- and post-interview forms, were used. In the analysis of the collected data, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. In line with this data analysis, it was observed that students took an active role in the self-assessment process and made progress in forming the equivalence between source language and target language in the translation courses; and in this sense, it was determined that they developed a positive attitude towards the translation classes. This thesis concentrates on Shakespeare's Richard III, King Lear and Coriolanus. The main concerns of this study are to discuss the importance of the self and to analyze how Shakespeare's characters construct their selves. These tragedies focus on Richard, Lear and Coriolanus, who are in conflict with themselves and society. Their self-consciousness leads them into a moment of contemplation, in which they realize that they must take action in order to be in charge of their own fate. No matter how the protagonists in Richard III, King Lear and Coriolanus live in different times, their main objective is the same: they want to gain mastery of their lives. Henceforth, their struggle to create their destiny reveals the process of the construction of the self. On the journey to the self, they face many difficulties. First of all, they understand that they must be independent in order to create their selves. In addition, these tragic figures realize that they must make critical choices and accept responsibility. At this point, they become aware of the fact that life is nothing but a ceaseless struggle. In addition, the construction of the self causes the utter transformation of individual, so it means that one will become a totally different person at the end of the quest. Sometimes the individuals achieve their self-construction, but most of the time their selves are divided. In Richard III, it is clear that the protagonist of the play establishes a connection between his body and self, and he reveals that his deformity affects his self-creation. In King Lear, Lear's ignorance leads to his downfall, but he turns into a wise mad man after he becomes aware of his sense of self. And in Coriolanus, it's tragic figure paves the way for his own downfall by thinking himself superior than the others, but he creates his self when he realizes that he is an ordinary human being who has weaknesses. In this respect, in order to examine the construction of the self in Richard III, King Lear and Coriolanus, this thesis concentrates on Arthur Schopenhauer, Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche and Jean-Paul Sartre's ideas on the self. All these philosophers focus on the corresponding concepts when they examine the construction of the self, such as choice, freedom, suffering and responsibility. Hence, this study takes into consideration the views of the aforementioned philosophers in elaborating the protagonists of Shakespeare. In this respect, this thesis analyzes Shakespeare's Richard III, King Lear and Coriolanus, which involve tragic figures who set out on a journey to their selves in order to gain mastery of their lives., Bu tez Shakespeare'in III. Richard, Kral Lear ve Coriolanus oyunlarına odaklanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın temel amaçları benlik kavramının önemini tartışmak ve Shakespeare'in karakterlerinin benliklerini nasıl inşa ettiklerini analiz etmektir. Bu trajediler kendileri ve toplumları ile çatışma halinde olan Richard, Lear ve Coriolanus üzerinde yoğunlaşır. Bireylerin özfarkındalıkları onları kaderlerinin kontrolünü ele almaları için harekete geçmeleri gerektiğini vurgulayan derin bir düşünceye sürükler. III. Richard, Kral Lear ve Coriolanus oyunlarındaki ana karakterler farklı zaman dilimlerinde yaşasalar bile, hepsinin temel amacı hayatları üzerinde hâkimiyet kazanmaktır. Bu yüzden, kaderlerini yaratırken verdikleri mücadele onların benlik inşası sürecini açığa çıkartır. Bireyler benliğe uzanan yolculuklarında birçok güçlükle karşılaşırlar. Öncelikle, benliklerini inşa edebilmeleri için tamamıyla özgür olmaları gerektiğini kavrarlar. Ayrıca bireyler kritik kararlar vermeleri ve sorumluluk üstlenmeleri gerektiğinin farkına varırlar. Bu noktada, hayatın bitmek bilmeyen bir mücadeleden başka bir şey olmadığının da farkına varırlar. Ayrıca, benlik inşası bireyin mutlak dönüşümünü gerektirmektedir ki bu da bireyin benliğe uzanan yolculuğu sonrasında bambaşka bir insana dönüşeceği anlamına gelir. Bazen bireyler benlik inşalarını tamamlayabilir, ancak çoğu zaman benlikleri parçalanır. III. Richard oyununda ana karakter kendi bedeni ve benliği arasında bir bağlantı kurar ve kendi bedenindeki çarpıklıkların benlik oluşumunu nasıl etkilediğini gözler önüne serer. Bütün bu filozoflar benlik inşasında seçim, özgürlük, acı çekme ve sorumluluk gibi benzer kavramlar üzerinde yoğunlaşmışlardır. Bundan dolayı, bu çalışma Shakespeare'in ana karakterlerinin incelenmesinde bahsedilen filozofların görüşlerini göz önünde bulundurmuştur. Böylece bu tez, Shakespeare'in III. Richard, Kral Lear ve Coriolanus oyunlarında hayatları üzerinde hâkimiyet kazanmak için kendi benliklerine doğru yolculuğa çıkmış bireyleri analiz etmiştir.

Bu tez, İngiliz post-apokaliptik romanları Michel Foucault'nun `biyoiktidar` kavramına uygun olarak incelemeyi amaçlar. İktidarı bir ilişkiler ağı olarak düşünen Foucault, yaşama odaklanan yeni bir iktidar türünün on yedinci yüzyıldan başlayarak ortaya çıktığını öne sürer. Foucault, yaşam üzerine olan bu iktidarı biyoiktidar olarak adlandırır ve onun disipline edici iktidar ve biyopolitika olarak iki farklı ve tamamlayıcı kutupta işlediğini açıklar. Disipline edici iktidar, ya da bireylerin anatomo-politikası, bireysel bedenleri sürekli gözetim ve normlar aracılığıyla disipline ederek kontrol eder. Diğer yandan, nüfusun biyopolitikası, nüfusun sağlığını ve gelişmesini sağlayacak çeşitli düzenlemeler yoluyla nüfusun bir bütün olarak kontrol edilmesiyle ilgilenir.Son zamanlarda çok popüler olan post-apokaliptik romanlar, bir felaketten sonra hayatta kalan ve yeni şartlara uyum sağlayan bir dünyada biyoiktidarın insanlar üzerinde nasıl uygulandığını görme fırsatı sunar. Bu açıdan, bu tez, hem bireyleri hem tüm nüfusu kontrol eden disipline edici teknikler ve biyopolitik düzenlemeleri incelemenin mümkün olduğu dört romanı, The Chrysalids, The Children of Men, Blind Faith ve The Last Day, ele alır. This thesis aims to examine British post-apocalyptic novels in accordance with Michel Foucault's concept of `biopower`. Foucault, who considers power as a net of relations, asserts that a new type of power focusing on life emerged beginning from the seventeenth century. Foucault calls this power over life biopower, and explains that it operates as two different and complementary poles, which are disciplinary power and biopolitics. Disciplinary power, or the anatomo-politics of the individuals, controls the individual bodies by disciplining them through constant surveillance and norms. On the other hand, biopolitics of the population concerns itself with the control of the population as a whole through various regulations that ensure the health and improvement of the population.Post-apocalyptic novels, which are very popular recently, present the opportunity to find out how biopower is exercised over people in a world that survives a catastrophe and adapts itself into new circumstances. Accordingly, this thesis deals with four novels, The Chrysalids, The Children of Men, Blind Faith and The Last Day, where it is possible to examine disciplinary techniques and biopolitical regulations that control both individuals and the whole population. 180

Bu tez çalışması, karşılaştırmalı eğitim araştırması yönteminin özelliklerini temel alarak, öğretmen yetiştirme programlarının, öğretmen adaylarının mesleki kimlik algıları üzerine etkilerini araştırmayı hedeflemiştir. Uluslararası eğitim sıralaması ölçekleri göz önüne alınarak, bu araştırmada, Vygotsky sosyokültürel ve Engeström'ün aktivite teorilerine göre, Finlandiya ve Türkiye'deki devlet üniversitelerinde uygulanan öğretmen yetiştirme programları ve dil öğretmeni adaylarının mesleki kimlik algıları karşılaştırılmıştır. İlk olarak, Finlandiya ve Türkiye'deki dil öğretmeni yetiştirme programları, Adamson ve Morris (2014) tarafından önerilen müfredat karşılaştırma modeline göre, müfredat seviyesinde dört alt başlıkta doküman analizine tabi tutulmuştur: dil ve dilbilim unsurları, edebiyat ve kültür unsurları, pedagojik unsurlar ve staj unsurları. Daha sonra, yarı-yapılandırılmış mülakatlar, odak grup tartışmaları ve alan notları kullanılarak, Finlandiya ve Türkiye'deki dil öğretmeni adaylarının mesleki kimlik algıları araştırılmıştır. Müfredat karşılaştırması, iki bağlam arasındaki özellikle öğretmen olma koşulları ve öğretmen adaylarının staj uygulamalarında çeşitli teorik ve yapısal farklılıkları açığa çıkarmıştır. Diğer taraftan, kimlik algılarının karşılaştırılması, Türk ve Finlandiyalı dil öğretmeni adayları arasında, öğretmen yetiştirme programlarından kaynaklanan beş temel farklılığı açığa çıkarmıştır. Bu farklıklar ikilemler şeklinde açıklanmıştır: (a) mesleki kimlik gelişimine karşı kimlik karmaşası, (b) deneyime karşı deneyimsizlik, (c) otonom öğretmen kimliğine karşı kuşkulu dil öğretmeni kimliği, (d) mesleki doyuma karşı iş bulma endişesi ve (e) olgun öğretmen kimliğine karşı aşırı genç öğretmenler. Bu bağlamda, dört temel öneri sunulmuştur. (1) Türkiye'deki dil öğretmeni adaylarının, Finlandiya ve diğer bazı Avrupa ülkelerinde uygulanan öğretmen yetiştirme programlarının uyarlanması yoluyla en az yüksek lisans seviyesinde eğitime sahip olmaları önerilmektedir. (2) Öğretmen eğitim okulları modeli dil öğretmeni adaylarının staj uygulamalarında çok faydalı olabilmektedir. (3) Öğretmen yetiştirme programlarına alınan öğrencilerin sayısı gelecekteki öğretmen ihtiyacına göre belirlenir ise, her bir üniversite kendi öğretmen adaylarına yetenek testi uygulayabilir. This dissertation study aimed to investigate the influence of teacher education programs on pre-service language teachers' identity perceptions by utilizing the features of comparative education research. Considering the international educational ranking scales, the study compared Turkish and Finnish teacher education programs at state universities and professional identity perception of pre-service language teachers with a Vygotskian sociocultural theoretical lens incorporating Engeström's activity theory. Initially, language teacher education programs in Turkey and Finland were subjected to document analysis at curricular base according to the curriculum comparison model of Adamson and Morris (2014) under four components of curriculum: language and linguistic components, literary and culture components, pedagogical components, and practicum component. Then, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and field notes were applied to investigate the professional identity perception of pre-service language teachers in both Finland and Turkey. Curricular comparison indicated that there were several theoretical and structural differences between the two contexts, especially in educational requirements to become a language teacher and the practicum applications of student teachers. Comparison of identity perceptions, on the other hand, revealed that there were five main differences between Finnish and Turkish pre-service language teachers stemming from differences in teacher education programs, which were explained as dilemmas: (a) professional identity development versus identity complication, (b) experienced versus inexperienced, (c) autonomous versus hesitant language teachers, (d) professional satisfaction versus career anxiety, and (e) mature versus too young teachers. In this regard, it was suggested that (1) language teachers in Turkey might be graduated with MA degree through the adaptation of teacher education programs applied in Finland and some other European countries, (2) the model of teacher training schools might be very beneficial in teaching practices of pre-service language teachers, (3) each university might conduct an aptitude test for teacher candidates if the number of students at teacher education departments are defined according to the future teacher demands, and (4) teacher education programs should support the teacher identity formation of student teachers through career planning opportunities. 142

Vizenor, eserlerinde Amerikan Yerlilerinin kimliklerine işaret eder ve yerli kimliklerini tartışmak için birçok terim kullanır. Vizenor, in his works, showed the Native American Indians identities, and he used many terms to discuss their Indian-ness. For instance, the term `survivance` was used to criticize that they stayed in a place without knowing anything from the changing of the world in the modern period because that term displayed their stances between `survival` and `resistance.` Thus, he confirmed that they have assimilated into the current lives of the modernity. The author also, used a tricky method in his works as a mockery to make critics about them. However, Native Americans were well on their way to being mainstreamed by colonial historians. Whereas, the postmodern critical approach to the literal restructuring of Native American identity in the period of renewal that followed Native America has begun to redesign a new field of assessment. Nontraditional, non-anthropological, poststructuralist critiques continued to explore the relationship between traditional and contemporary experience. ―Survivance‖, a term coined by Native American writer and literary critic Gerald Vizenor, was used to express this situation. In addition, Vizenor's reflection on the survival and resistance of Native Americans as they face the challenges of the world while trying to promote their indigenous identity is reflected in their works. Bu çalışmada, yabancı dil öğretimi üzerine yapılan lisansüstü tezlerin analizi yapılarak hangi alanlara odaklanıldığı, hangi konuların problemli olarak algılandığı, sözkonusu konuların nasıl değiştiği ve tarihsel süreç içinde nasıl tartışıldığı, problemli olarak görülen alanların yıllara göre dağılımının nasıl olduğu, problemlerin nasıl geliştiği ve tartışıldığı aktör teknik ekseninden bütüncül analiz ile detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Yabancı dil öğretiminde nelerin problem olarak algılandığı ve bu durumun tarihsel süreç içerisinde nasıl bir döngü takip ettiği konuya ilişkin mevcut durumun ortaya konması suretiyle dil öğretimine ilişkin gelecekte yapılacak akademik çalışmalara yön verilmesi anlamında büyük önem taşımaktadır. Araştırma evrenini Türkiye'de yabancı dil öğretimine ilişkin 1987-2017 yılları arasında yayınlanmış 302 lisansüstü tezden oluşmuştur. Çalışmada evren, örneklem olarak kullanıldığından, araştırma bir tam sayım çalışmasıdır. Tezlerin 244'u yüksek lisans, 58'si doktora tezidir. Başlıklar, türler, üniversiteler, bölümler, içerikler, yöntem, bulgular ve yorumlar, sonuçlar ve önerileri olarak 8 kategoride bütüncül analiz ile aktör-teknik (öğretmen, öğrenci) açışından analiz edilmiştir. In this study, an analysis of the postgraduate theses on foreign language teaching by investigating what areas were focused on, which subjects were perceived as problematic, how the subjects in question changed and were discussed in the historical period, how the distribution of fields seen as problematic was by years, how the problems evolved and discussed was dealt with in detail by holistic analysis with actor-technic perspective. What is perceived as a problem in foreign language teaching and how it follows a cycle in the historical process are of great importance in terms of shaping the future studies on foreign language teaching by revealing the current situation on the subject. This analysis will arouse awareness regarding problems in using foreign languages effectively in Turkey and new methods and technics in foreign language teaching will be put on agenda. This study is of significance for academics who work on foreign language teaching in terms of observing the problematic issues and identifying which subjects were emphased in postgraduate studies.The more studies about foreign language teaching are done and contribute useful insights for the field, educational organizations and application areas, the more improvements about organizations are made. The general objective of this research is to analyze published postgraduate theses on foreign language teaching in Turkey. Scientific publications were analysed in terms of types, titles, context, universities, institutes, language, method (research design/research sample/data collection tools), findings and interpretations, results and suggestions. Population is composed of 302 postgraduate theses on foreign language teaching published between 1987-2017. Research is a study of complete inventory for population is used as sample in this study. 244 theses are master's theses, 58 theses are PhD theses. The data was analysed under eight categories based on the actor-technic perspective (teacher, student) with holistic analysis. Codes were developed according to these categories. The results were discussed and concrete suggestions related to research and application were made in light of the findings. Bu çalışma, yuva özlemi kavramının Karayip diyasporasına mensup bireylerdeki etkilerinin, özellikle Andrea Levy'nin Limonun Meyvesi (1999) ve Caryl Phillips'in Son Yolculuk (1985) romanlarındaki ana karakterler üzerindeki etkilerinin incelenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Limonun Meyvesi'ndeki ana karakterin Jamaikalı göçmen bir ailenin Britanya doğumlu çocuğu olması ve Son Yolculuk'taki ana karakterin Karayipli bir göçmen olması, ana karakterlerin `yuva` arayışlarındaki benzerlik ve farklılıkların izini sürmek için önemlidir.İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nın bitimini takip eden yıllarda, Britanya'ya olan büyük çapta göçlerin nedeni özellikle erişilecek bolluk ve zenginliğe olan ortak inançtan kaynaklanmaktaydı. It is significant to trace the similarities and differences of their quests for `home` since the former is a Britain-born child of a Jamaican immigrant family and the latter is a Caribbean immigrant to Britain. After the years following the end of the Second World War, there was a massive immigration to Britain particularly as a result of the common belief of the abundance and wealth that it might offer. The Caribbean people who migrated to Britain encountered an altered reality and many of them faced a strain about resolving where their `home` is, which continued being a dilemma for their Britain-born children as well. Homesickness may be regarded as a consequence of the sum of many reasons. These might be grounded on one's being unfamiliar to their past, their loose family ties, the troubles in personal relationships, and it might be even due to their educational backgrounds. Most significantly, the difference between being an immigrant in Britain and being a Britain-born second generation in a migrant family may be the causal factor in determining one's `home.` However, both parties might face racism and discrimination, and therefore, both struggle for being a part of the majority. As long as people feel rootless and cannot identify themselves with a certain place, they may experience the emotional distress of it and eventually might face an identity crisis. The protagonists in Fruit of the Lemon and The Final Passage are both bothered by the sensations that homesickness causes on them and look for routes to overcome their unrest. This thesis consists of an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction part, the associations of `home` and the scope of the thesis are introduced with a summary of each part. Öğrenme stillerinin yabancı dil öğrenme üzerinde güçlü bir etkisi vardır. Arap ve Türk öğrencilerin öğrenme tercihleri arasındaki kültürler arası ilişki hakkında henüz çok araştırma yapılmamıştır. Bu nedenle bu çalışmanın amacı, Arap ve Türk katılımcıların yükseköğretim düzeyinde tercih ettikleri birincil ve ikincil öğrenme stili tercihlerini araştırmaktı. Ayrıca bu çalışmada, öğrenme stili tercihleri ile cinsiyet arasında fark olup olmadığı da incelenmiştir. Dahası bu araştırma, İngilizce seviyesine ve yaşa bağlı olarak öğrenme stili tercihleri arasındaki ilişkiyi de tanımlamıştır. Hazırlık okullarında İngilizce öğrenimi gören 111 öğrencinin katıldığı, nicel araştırma yöntemlerinin kullanıldığı bir anket yapılmıştır. Bu ankette, görsel işitsel, kinestetik, dokunsal, grup ve bireysel kategorileri içerisinde, öğrencilerin tercih ettiği öğrenme stili tercihlerini belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Bulgular ışığında, kinestetik öğrenme stili, Arap ve Türk öğrencilerin tercih ettiği başlıca öğrenme stili olmuştur.Arap öğrenciler için en az tercih edilen öğrenme stili bireysel iken Türk öğrenciler için en az tercih edilen öğrenme stili grup ile öğrenmedir. Cinsiyet ve öğrenme stili tercihleri arasında büyük bir fark olmamasına rağmen, kız öğrenciler dokunsal ve grup öğrenenleri gibi görünmüşlerdir. Katılımcıların yaşları ve İngilizce düzeyleri öğrenme stilleri ile ilişkilidir. Arap ve Türk öğrenciler yaparak öğrenmeyi sevmelerine bağlı olarak denebilir ki öğrenenler, dili en iyi kullanarak ve üreterek öğreniyorlar.Türk öğrencilerin en az tercih ettikleri çalışma yönteminin grup ile çalışma olmasına karşın Arap öğrencilerin en az tercih ettikleri çalışma yöntemi bireysel çalışmadır. Much research on the cross-cultural relationship between Arab and Turkish students' preferences for learning has not been done yet. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the minor and major learning style preferences preferred by the Arab and Turkish participants at the tertiary level. This study also examined if there was a difference between learning style preferences and gender. Moreover, it also identified the relationship between learning style preferences and ages and English level. Quantitative research methods were employed, so a questionnaire in which 111 students studying English at preparatory schools participated was conducted to collect and analyse the data. This questionnaire aimed to identify students' favoured learning style preferences categorised as visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, tactile, group and individual. In the light of the findings, the major learning style preferred by Arab and Turkish students was kinaesthetic. The least preferred learning style for Arab students was individual while it was group learning style for Turkish students. Although there was not a big difference between gender and learning style preferences, female students seemed to be tactile and group learners. The ages and English levels of the participants were related to their learning styles. Both Arab and Turkish students like to learn by doing. It can be said that learners learn best by using and producing language. Although Turkish students prefer to study in a group the least, Arab students prefer to learn individually the least. Dünya edebiyatının ilgi çekici türlerden biri olan romanın en önemli alt türlerinden birisi de polisiye romandır. Avrupa'da oldukça gelişmiş bir tür olan polisiye roman zaman içerisinde Türk edebiyatında da kendisine yer bulmuştur. Bu açıdan İngiliz ve Türk edebiyatında polisiye romanın gelişimine bakmak önem arz etmektedir. Her iki ülkenin edebiyatında bu türün nasıl ve ne şekilde doğduğunu irdeleyen bu araştırma ile İngiliz ve Türk edebiyatında polisiye romanın gelişimi incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı İngiliz polisiye romanın doğuşuna değinerek bu konuda yaşanan tartışmaları irdelemek ve İngiliz polisiye romanın ortaya çıkış tarihlerini netleştirmektir. Aynı şekilde Türk polisiye romanın da doğuşuna ve bu konuda yaşanan tartışmalara değinerek Türk polisiye romanın ortaya çıkışı üzerinde durulmuştur. Ayrıca İngiliz ve Türk polisiye romanını dönemsel olarak karşılaştırarak hangi ülkenin edebiyatında bu türün daha önce ortaya çıktığı meselesi çalışılmıştır.Çalışma kapsamında XVIII. Yüzyılın sonlarından XX. Yüzyılın ikinci yarısına kadar ki dönem incelenmiştir. Araştırma için literatür taraması yapılmış ve İngiliz-Türk edebiyatında polisiye roman türündeki eserler ile bu alanda yapılmış çalışmalar incelenmiştir. İnceleme kapsamında her iki ülkenin bu alandaki temel eserleri okunmuş, bir kısmının özeti çıkarılmış ve bazı önemli eserlerinde içerik analizleri yapılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda İngiliz polisiye romanı denilirken bu kavramın tam olarak hangi ülkeleri kapsadığının tartışmalı olduğu görülmüştür. Fakat Türk edebiyatında İngiliz edebiyatında olduğu gibi benzer bir tartışmanın olmadığı görülmüştür. One of the most important subgenres of the novel, which is the most attractive genre of world literature, is the crime novel. The crime novel genre, which is a highly developed genre in Europe, has found its place in Turkish literature later on. In this respect, it is important to look at the development of a crime novel in English and Turkish literature. With this research which examines how this genre was born in the literature of both countries, the development of crime novels in English and Turkish literature is analyzed. The main purpose of this study is to examine the discussions about this issue by mentioning the birth of the British crime novel and to clarify the emergence dates of the British crime novel and also, the emergence of the Turkish crime novel discoursed by addressing the discussions on this issue and the emergence of the Turkish crime novel.Besides, by comparing the British and Turkish crime novel periodically, the question of in which country's literature this genre has appeared before was studied. Within the scope of the study, the period from the end of the XVIII century to the second half of the XX century was examined. For the research, a literature review was made and works and studies in the field of crime novels in English-Turkish literature were examined. Within the scope of the review, the basic works of both countries in this field were read, some of them were summarized and content analyses were made in some important works. As a result of the research, while it was called the British crime novel, it was seen that which countries this concept covers exactly is controversial. However, it was observed that there is no similar discussion in Turkish literature as in English literature. 209

Hem çocuk hem de yetişkin okuru kapsayan çağdaş fantastik çocuk romanı ciddi ve derin gerçek hayat konularını inceler ve sorgular. Gerçekliğin alternatif bir şekilde algılanmasını ve temsil edilmesini sağlayan fantezi işlevini kullanır. Philip Pullman'ın üçlemesi, Lyra'nın kendini keşfetme arayışı üzerinden çağdaş dünyamızın problemlerini ve kaygılarını detaylandırır. Lyra'nın alternatif dünyalara olan yolculuğu hem kendisinin hem de okuyucunun kendi dünyaları ve benlik algıları konusunda bakış açılarını genişletmelerine olanak sağlar. The aim of this dissertation is to show the characteristics of children's literature and explore the relationship between fantasy and reality through the alternative worlds of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Contemporary children's fantasy fiction, which encompasses both child and adult readers, examines and questions serious and profound real life issues. It employs the function of fantasy to offer alternative perceptions and representations of reality. Philip Pullman's trilogy delves into the problems and concerns of our contemporary world through Lyra's quest for self-discovery. Lyra's journey to alternative worlds enables both her and the reader to expand their perspectives about their world and their sense of self. Pullman depicts a story of maturation in which he emphasizes the necessity of growing up to take responsibility for our world. This study examines the historical development of children's fiction in regard to the notion of childhood and discusses how children's fantasy fiction subverts the fixed definitions and reveals the changing presence of reality. Philip Pullman's trilogy is analysed focusing on concerns and problems of the contemporary world with regard to the characteristics of children's fantasy fiction. Dolayısıyla, bu tez çalışması transgender anlatıcıların rolünü ve beden aracılığı ile ifade edilen sabit cinsel kimlik statüsünün eleştirisini irdelemek ve uygun bir bağlama yerleştirmek için Virginia Woolf'un Orlando, Angela Carter'ın The Passion of New Eve ve Jeanette Winterson'ın Written on the Body eserlerini inceler. Bu bakımdan, Virginia Woolf'un Orlando eseri toplumsal cinsiyet olgusunun nasıl tekrar şekillendiğini ve yeniden ifade edildiğini ve aynı zamanda bir bedenin nasıl sürekli dönüşüm içerisinde olduğunu gösterir. Sonrasında, Angela Carter'ın The Passion of New Eve eseri bireyin toplumsal kimliğinin nasıl sürekli değiştiğini ve nasıl dünyayı sürekli olarak tekrar şekillendirdiğini göstermektedir. Diğer taraftan, Jeanette Winterson'ın Written on the Body romanı anlatıcının cinsiyet ve cinsel kimliği belirtilmeden okuyucunun anlatıcının cinsiyetini tartışabilmesinin nasıl mümkün olduğunu ve metindeki cinsiyet kimliğinin eksikliği karşısında okuyucu anlatıcıya nasıl cinsel kimlik öngörebiliyor konularına dikkat çekmiştir. Hence, this dissertation studies Orlando (1928) by Virginia Woolf, The Passion of New Eve (1977) by Angela Carter, and Written on the Body (1992) by Jeanette Winterson in order to examine and contextualize the role of transgender narrators and their critique of stable gender position articulated through body. In this respect, Woolf's Orlando shows how the novel both engages with the reformulation and rearticulation of gender and depicts a body in the process of transitioning. Carter's The Passion of New Eve demonstrates how the subjects are already transgendered and continuously reshaping the material world through the embodiment of the transgendered being. On the other hand, Winterson's Written on the Body urges the reader to consider how possible to discuss sex and sexuality of the narrator when his/her gender is never exposed and how the reader constitutes an identity for the narrator and an entrance into the text in the absence of sex. Then, this dissertation will show the way gender ambiguity is created by the existence of transgressive transgender figure in each novel, which enables the reader to interrogate gender dynamics and to reconsider the categories of sex and sexuality with alteration in mind. This dissertation will also indicate that each writer implants the transgender body throughout their examination of language's ambiguity and the disruption of spatiality and temporality. Polisiye türü ve polisiye romanın genelde edebi türe özgün bir formül ve çerçeve içerisinde yazıldığı düşünülür. Ancak, bu tezin amacı, 1970'li yıllardan sonra, klasik polisiye roman yazınında, cinsiyet ve ataerkil ideoloji ile bağlantıları olan ciddi bir yol ayrımı yaşandığı savını araştırmak ve mümkünse ispatlamaktır. P.D. James'in kadınların profesyonel tercihleri ve gelişimlerini engelleyen sınırları sorgulayan ve yıkmaya çalışan 1970'lerin `yeni kadın` kavramını örnekleyen detektif figürünü resmettiği Kadınlara Göre Değil (1972) adlı kitabıyla başlayan bu edebi yol ayrımı, Martin Amis'in, özellikle kurgusal detektifin geleneksel karakter tasviri, dilin daima polisiye türüne özgü bir biçimde kullanılışı, gerilimin her zaman tepe noktasına ulaştığı ve çözümlendiği alışılagelmiş anlatım tarzı, ve suçun hep benzer türde ve özellikte olması ve sonuçlarının hep aynı şekilde cezalandırılması gibi polisiye roman türüne has klişeleri yıktığı ve aynı zamanda polis teşkilatında çalışan bir kadın detektifin bu maskülen ortamda var olmasının zorluklarını ve belki de imkansızlığını ele alan Gece Treni (1997) gibi eserlerle devam eder. Detective fiction and detective novel have always been stigmatized as a formulaic convention with strict generic features and definite boundaries, yet, the argument of this dissertation is to claim a significant generic deviation taking place after 1970s with repercussions on arguments about gender and patriarchal ideology. Beginning with P.D. James's An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1972) which portrays a female detective as a representative for the `new woman` of 1970s subverting the stereotypical detective masculine in the genre and the patriarchal boundaries set around women's professional preferences and growth, the deviation continues with Martin Amis's Night Train (1997) which not only challenges the generic traditions of the detective novel particularly in the areas of characterization of the fictional detective, the specific use of language in the genre, the triangular climactic plot and the denouement following the climax, the nature and type of the crime and its repercussions, but also draws attention to the difficulty and perhaps impossibility to survive in an extremely masculine working environment in a patriarchal society, that is the police officer. Graham Swift's The Light of Day (2003), furthers the deviation and subverts the traditional narrative structure of classic detective novels, and the detective as a `saviour` in classic examples of detective novel is transformed into an anti-hero or an anti-detective who cannot or will not either save the society from the crime or restore the order disturbed by the crime. Moreover, the traditional supreme authority and the male gaze of conventional detective figures in the genre are challenged in Swift's novel to an extent that obviously depower the gazer and question its authority against women. The dissertation, thus, concludes that not only do these three novels explored in the study undermine various generic traditions of classic detective novel, but also the detective figures presented in these works challenge stereotypical gender roles in patriarchy. 229

Çağdaş İngiliz romanının en önemli yazarlarından olan Caryl Phillips kurgu ve kurgu olmayan eserlerinde, sürekli değişen ev, kimlik ve aidiyet kavramlarına odaklanır. Caryl Phillips'i yazar olarak çağdaşlarından ayıran şey, köle ticareti ve kölelik ile ilgili tarihsel materyallerle uğraşmasıdır. Phillips'in yazılarının çoğu, Karayip kimliğini şekillendiren tarihi, kültürel ve psikolojik unsurları ve Karayip kimliğinin uzak kölelik tarihiyle nasıl sürekli diyalog içinde olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Caryl Phillips, one of the most important authors of contemporary English novel, focuses on the ever-changing notions of home, identity and belonging in his works of fiction and nonfiction. What distinguishes him as a writer from his contemporaries is the way he deals with historical materials relating to the slave trade and slavery. Most of Phillips's writings undertake mapping out the historical, cultural and psychological elements that have shaped Caribbean identity and how the Caribbean identity is in constant dialogue with the remote history of slavery. These traumatic experiences, under the pain of which generations of blacks suffered, have shaped Caribbean identity structure and left a mark on Caribbean people's consciousness for entire centuries. Since Caryl Phillips has been raised in Britain and exposed to racism, he has experienced the trauma in his life and reflected the effect of this trauma in his characters.The recent developments in trauma studies call for a reconsideration of the applicability of Western trauma theories to colonial subjects by arguing that current definitions of trauma have been constructed from the experiences of dominant groups in Western society. This study aims to explore the questions of race, colonial consciousness, culture and class discrimination in several texts by Caryl Phillips in a post-colonial context and in the light of trauma theory. Phillips's texts examined in this study repeatedly revolve around the following subject matters: The Afro-Caribbean connections, the history of slavery, black-white encounters, the Middle Passage, the horrors of plantation life, the memory of slavery and colonialism, forced migration and the dispersal of the black diaspora and its lack of roots. His novels belong to the genre of postcolonial trauma fiction because of their focus on the massacre of Caribbeans, the ensuing civil war, and the death and starvation of a million or more Caribbeans and because of their exploration of the difficulty of recounting and voicing that trauma caused by colonial and diasporic experiences.Key Words: Trauma, Postcolonialism, Caryl Phillips, Diaspora, Slavery, Colonialism. 206

KonuĢma becerilerini geliĢtirme potansiyellerine ragmen filmlerden faydalanma stratejilerinin geliĢtirilmesi konusu ihmal edilmiĢtir ve bu konuda çok az sayıda çalıĢma yapılmıĢtır. Bu stratejilerden biri film senaryoları ve çevirilerinin karĢılaĢtırılarak, chunk, teknik terim ve yaratıcı dil örneklerinin tespit edilmesi ve çevirileriyle birlikte listelenmesi ve özellikle kalıpların yoğun olarak kullanıldığı bu senaryoların modellenmesiyle yaratıcı diyalog yazma faaliyetlerinin yapılması olmuĢtur. Senaryoların çevirileriyle birlikte değerlendirilmesinin önemine inanarak bu araĢtırmada amacımız lise öğrencilerinin edebiyat eserlerinin film uyarlamalarından yararlanmayla baĢlayıp, film senaryolarını modelleyerek kendi senaryolarını yazma ve oynamayla sonuçlanan dil öğrenim ve kullanım süreçlerini incelemek olmuĢtur. Nitel ve nicel verilerin üçgenleĢtirilmesinde karma yöntem araĢtırma tasarımı kullanılmıĢtır. Katılımcılar olarak 68 lise öğrencisinin görüĢleri Likert ölçeği (1-5) anketi ve soru maddeleri hakkındaki yorumları ile incelenmiĢtir. Bu çalıĢma, konuĢma Ġngilizcesi ve üretken beceriler için gerekli parçaları geliĢtirmiĢtir. Edebi kitaplar okumak ve bu kitaplardan uyarlanan filmleri izlemek yoluyla öğrencilerin kelime bilgisi artırıldı ve öğrenciler edebi kitapları okudular ve bu kitaplardan uyarlanmıĢ filmleri izlediler. Okudukları kitaplardan ve izledikleri filmlere ait film senaryolarından ve parçalardan yararlanarak kendi film senaryolarını yazmıĢ, videolar çekmiĢ ve sonra çektikleri videolarda rol almıĢtır. Dolayısıyla bu çalıĢma aynı zamanda yaratıcılığı ve kendine güveni de arttırdı. Bulgular, 21. yüzyıl becerilerinin, öğrenme ve yeniliğin, bilgi, medya ve teknoloji, yaĢam ve kariyerin geliĢmesi için etkilere sahiptir. One of these strategies has been to compare film scripts and their translations, to identify chunks, technical terms and creative language examples and to list them with their translations, and to do creative dialogue writing activities especially by modeling these scripts where chunks are used extensively. Believing in the importance of evaluating the film scripts with their translations, this study aims to investigate the processes the researcher/teacher‟s high school students went through in learning and using the target language starting with the use of the film adaptations of the literary works, writing their scripts modeling the film scripts, acting their own scripts and shooting their performances. The mixed method research design was used with the triangulation of the qualitative and quantitative data. As the participants, the 68 high school students‟s views were investigated with Likert scale (1-5) questionnaire and their comments about the question items. This study improved the learners‟ productive language skills in general and their knowledge of chunks, jargons and creative language use in particular. This study was also beneficial for translation skills.This study has also improved the creativity, self-confidence and collaboration. The study also demonstrated that productive use of films in teaching English develops imagination and creativity, the literacies regarding information, media, and innovative technology and leadership through the learning and use of English.Key Words: English language movies/series, learning English, scripts, translation, technology. 85

Postmodern edebiyatta sık kullanılan metinlerarasılık, üstkurmaca, parodi ve pastiş gibi teknikler hem okur hem yazar hem de eleştirmenler için geniş çalışma alanları yaratmaktır. Özellikle üstkurmaca ve metinlerarasılık teknikleri ile postmodern yazarlar eserlerine bir dinamizm ve farklılık katarak okuyucuyu da sürekli zinde tutmaktadır. Bu bağlamda Orhan Pamuk'un Beyaz Kale romanı ile J. M. Coetzee'nin Düşman romanı pek çok postmodern öğe içermektedir. Orhan Pamuk'un Beyaz Kale romanında başka bir roman karakterine önsöz yazdırmak ya da anlatıcıları değiştirmek gibi üstkurmaca örnekleri sunmuştur. Bunun yanında romanda tarihi bir konuyu ele alan Pamuk, tarihi mekânları, eski kaynakları ve karakterleri de kullanarak gerçeklik ile kurguyu birleştirip metinlerarasılık tekniğini örneklendirmiştir. Coetzee ise Düşman romanı ile Daniel Defoe'nun Robinson Crusoe'sunun parodisini yaparak yeniden yazmış, o dönemin yazın anlayışına inat romanın başkarakterini kadın seçmiş ve Crusoe'yu yaşlı pasif bir karakter olarak romana dâhil etmiştir. Romanın anlatıcısı olan Susan ile Cruso'nun hikâyesini yazacak olan Foe'nun (romanda yazar olarak bilinir) ilişkisi üstkurmaca tekniği için önemli bir örneği teşkil etmektedir. Aynı zamanda Coetzee pek çok esere göndermede bulunarak metinlerarasılık bağlamında incelenmeye değer bir eser oluşturmuştur. Bu çalışmada postmodern öğeler, üstkurmaca ve metinlerarasılık bağlamında adı geçen iki romanın incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır Techniques such as intertextuality, metafiction, parody, and pastiche, frequently used in postmodern literature, are creating wide studying areas for readers, writers, and critics. Especially with the metafiction and intertextuality techniques, postmodern authors keep the reader alive by adding dynamism and difference to their works. In this context, Orhan Pamuk's The White Castle novel and J. M. Coetzee's Foe novel contain many postmodern elements. Orhan Pamuk presents examples of metafiction, such as making a novel character write a preface to another novel or changing narrators in his novel The White Castle. In addition, Pamuk, who deals with a historical subject in the novel, exemplifies the intertextuality technique by combining reality and fiction, using historical places, old sources, and characters. On the other hand, Coetzee in his novel Foe rewrites Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe by mocking it, and he chooses the protagonist of the novel as a woman on the contrary of the writing philosophy of the period, and adds Cruso as an old and passive character of the novel. The relationship between Susan, the narrator of the novel, and Foe (known as a writer in the novel), who will write the story of Cruso, constitutes an important example for the metafiction technique. At the same time, it has been a work worth examining in the context of intertextuality by referring to many works. Bu tez, Shelagh Delaney'in A Taste of Honey ve Caryl Churchill'in Owners oyunlarını feminist bir bakış açısıyla analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Oyunlar çoğunlukla ikinci dalga feminist hareketinin etkisi altında yazılmıştır ve hareketin kilit noktalarını içerdikleri gerçeği göz önüne alınarak incelenmektedir. Zamanın en önemli feministlerinden biri olması nedeniyle, Simone de Beauvoir'in kadınlar hakkındaki fikirleri, oyunları tartışırken dikkate alınmaktadır.Her iki oyun yazarı da oyunlarının merkezine kendine özgü kadın karakterleri koymakta ve erkek egemenliğine çeşitli şekillerde yaklaşmaktadır. İlk bölüm, özellikle ikinci dalga feminizme ve Simone de Beauvoir'e odaklanmanın yanı sıra, modern feminizmin kısa bir tarihi ile ilgilidir. II. Bölüm, Shelagh Delaney'nin oyununun feminist unsurlarını sunar ve kadınlığın farklı yönlerini inceler. III. The plays were written mostly under the influence of the second wave feminist movement and thus they are explored taking account the fact that they include the key points of the movement. Simone de Beauvoir's ideas on women are paid attention while discussing the plays as she is one of the most significant feminists of the time.Both playwrights put distinctive female characters in the center of their plays and approach male dominance in a variety of ways. The first chapter deals with a short history of modern feminism along with focusing specifically on second wave feminism and Simone de Beauvoir. Chapter II presents the feminist elements of Shelagh Delaney's play and examines the different aspects of womanhood. Bellek kavramı 20 yüzyılın son çeyreğinde popülerlik kazanmış olan ve farklı disiplinlerle ilişkisi olan bir alandır. Bu bakımdan, bellek kavramını ilişki içinde olduğu diğer alanlarla birlikte incelemek, kavramın içeriğinin anlaşılması açısından önemlidir. Bellek kavramının giderek genişlemekte olan kültürel bellek, toplumsal bellek, tarihsel bellek ve bireysel bellek gibi çeşitli boyutları ve nostalji ve travma gibi çeşitli türleri bulunmaktadır. Bellek çalışmaları, bu kavramları farklı bakış açılarından incelemektedir ve uygulama sahası olarak edebiyat gerekli ortamı sağlamaktadır. Bu bakımdan, 20.yüzyıl çağdaş İngiliz romancılarından olan Graham Swift'in eserlerinde bellek kavramının derinliğini ve boyutlarını görmek mümkündür. Bu çalışmada, bellek kavramının boyutları yazarın eserleri üzerinden çeşitli açılardan incelenecek ve bellek kavramı bütünsel bir bakış açısıyla ortaya konmaya çalışılacaktır. It has connections with different fields of science. In this respect, it is important to scrutinize the concept of memory in relation to the fields which are related to it in order to understand the content of the concept. There are some ever-evolving dimensions of the memory concept such as cultural memory, collective memory, historical memory and individual memory, and some types such as nostalgia and trauma. Memory studies evaluate these concepts from different dimensions and literature, as a field of science, provides the required environment for practice. In this regard, it is possible to see the depth and dimensions of the memory concept in the works of Graham Swift who is a 20th century contemporary British novelist. In this study, the dimensions of memory will be evaluated from different perspectives over the novels of the writer and a concept of memory will be proposed with a holistic approach. Bu tezin amacı, Agatha Christie'nin Taken at the Flood ve Death on the Nile başlıklı romanlarındaki kadın karakterlerin ilişkileri içindeki konumlarının araştırılmasıdır. Referans olarak Simone de Beauvoir'ın The Second Sex (İkinci Cinsiyet) kitabındaki the `One` ve the `Other` (asıl ve öteki) konseptleri kullanılmıştır ve kadınların ilişkileri içinde erkek partnerleri tarafından ötekileştirilip ötekileştirilmediği analiz edilmiştir. In addition, female characters are compared with each other to find the differences between one another, which will help explain why one is subordinated while the other has an active role in her relationship. In addition, the differences the women characters have been analysed, and discussed referring to the Marxist Feminist perspective.Also, the history of feminism and crime fiction is added to analyse the novels regarding the changes and improvements in the genre, and feminist movement. In addition, the literary career of Christie provides how the genre was changing then since she was one of the pioneers who developed the genre during its golden age. It is thought that her autobiography may provide a guide to her literary style and her characterization of both women and men in her books. It is concluded that all the woman characters, except for one of them, Rosaleen Cloade, in the novels have an active role in their relationships. It requires a more precise examination of the language used by the poet and the psychology in conjunction with literature. The internal and unconscious mind of Harjo examines the extent and frequency of inevitable effects usually used in the form of a symbol in her poems. The metaphor in her poems serves the word, theme, meaning, and community. Her symbols support national-patriotic, organic origins, and the most outstanding of typical elements. She does not merely describe but blends the description of nature with human states and thoughts, and then reveals itself in symbolic indications. Harjo, with descriptive and interpretive nature, experiences the shade reporting of her observation. In addition to describing the components of the environment around her, she explains the identified equality between the creatures. It is nature-oriented that Harjo considers herself to be part of it, in an informative way with her personified verses. Özerk öğrenme eğitimde son yıllarda popüler olan bir kavramdır. Bazı öğretmenler, öğrenme sürecinden öğrencilerin önemli bir rol alması gerektiğine inanırken, diğerleri öğrencinin dil öğrenimindeki rolünü göz ardı etmektedir. Başarılı öğrenciler öğrenme süreci ile ilgili sorumluluk almakta ve ne öğreneceği ve nasıl öğreneceği ile ilgili olarak öğretmenle birlikte kararlar alabilmektedir. Ancak, dil öğreniminde bazı başarısız öğrenciler öğrenme sürecinde etkin rol oynamadığı için çeşitli sorunlarla karşılaşmaktadır. Bu yüzden, bu çalışma üniversite de eğitim alan öğrencilerin sorumluluk, yetenek, motivasyon, sınıf içi ve sınıf dışı etkinliklere katılmasını içeren özerk öğrenme ile ilgili algılarını ölçmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu algıyı belirlemek için nicel araştırma yöntemi olarak, İngilizce öğretmenliği alanında eğitim alan 110 öğrencinin katıldığı bir Likert tipi tutum ölçeği kullanıldı. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre, katılımcıların çoğu yabancı dil gelişiminde öğretmenden bağımsız olarak özerk öğrenmenin gerekli olduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Bu da tutum belirleme ölçeğine katılanların yabancı dil öğreniminde etkin bir rol oynadığını göstermektedir. Ancak, az sayıda öğrenci dil öğreniminde öğretmene dayandıklarını ve bağımsız olarak dil çalışması yapamadıklarını belirtmektedir. Öğretmenler yabancı dil öğreniminde daha başarılı sonuçlara ulaşabilmek için özerk olarak öğrenmeyi önemsemeli ve öğrencileri bu konuda eğitmelidir. While some teachers do not hand over responsibility for learning, others acknowledge the role of learners in language learning. Successful learners like to take responsibility for their own learning process and make decisions about what to learn and how to learn. However, some less successful students have no self-agency or autonomy. There seems to be a problem with learners and learning. Hence, this study aims at identifying learners' perceptions of learner autonomy involving responsibilities, abilities, motivation, and in-class, out-of-class activities and behaviours. As a quantitative data collection method, a questionnaire in which 110 students participated was conducted to gather and analyse the data. The findings of the study revealed the fact that the majority of the participants were autonomous English learners. They were aware of whose responsibility it was- the teacher's or the learner's. They were also able to make decisions about the content and methodology, have a high level of motivation to learn and enjoy participating in-and out-of-class activities. However, the minority of these participants tended to rely on their teacher and did not study English independently. They held teachers responsible for the learning process, so they did not spend a lot of time studying English on their own and did not develop strategies to succeed in learning English. Teachers should foster learner autonomy and train learners to become more autonomous. Learners need to be self-directed and self-agent rather than spoon-fed. İrlanda asıllı Britanyalı yazar Bram Stoker'ın korku romanı Drakula ilk kez on yedinci yüzyıl şiiriyle ortaya çıkan vampir yazınının en bilinen ve sevilen örneğidir. Bu tez çalışmasında İngiliz evrimsel biyolog Richard Dawkins tarafından ortaya atılan ve kabaca bir kültür içerisinde bireyden bireye sözlü, yazılı, görsel iletişim yöntem ve araçlarıyla aktarılan, kendini kopyalayabilen, değişim geçiren, seçilimsel zorluklara tepki veren düşünce, sembol ve uygulamalar olarak tanımlanabilecek` `mem` kavramı ve Profesör Joseph Carroll tarafından kuramlaştırılan Evrimsel Edebiyat Eleştirisi ışığında romantik edebiyat baladlarında ve Viktorya edebiyatı korku kurmacalarında vampirin Bram Stoker'ın Drakula karakterine memetik evrimi incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda Drakula meminin Bram Stoker'ın yaşamından ve kendisinden önce yazılmış olan vampir kurmacalarından memetik kalıtım yoluyla miras aldığı vampir fenotipine ait özellikler ile kurgusal paralellikler, mekân ve olay örgüsü analiz edilmiş ve doğal seçilim içerisinde edebiyattaki öncülü vampirlerin Bram Stoker'ın Drakula eserindeki Transilvanyalı, soylu, baştan çıkarıcı sterotipik vampir memine izlediği evrimsel süreç ele alınmıştır. The first of the two key concepts that this thesis analyzes is the concept of `meme`, which was coined by the British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, that can be defined as a thought, symbol or application transmitted from one individual to another via oral, written and visual methods and means of communication within a culture, replicates itself, transforms, responds to selective pressures, and the second concept is the memetic evolution of the vampire into the character, Dracula by Bram Stoker in Romantic ballads and Victorian horror narratives within the context of Evolutionary Literary Criticism which was theorized by Professor Joseph Carroll. In this regard, the qualities of the vampire phenotype that the Dracula meme inherited some qualities from its antecedent works of vampire fiction through memetic heredity, setting and plot are examined, and the evolutionary process that literary vampire predecessor had undergone towards the Transylvanian, aristocratic, seductive, stereotypical vampire. Finally, in the appendix, the prequels, sequels, and spin-offs of Dracula to demonstrate that the Dracula meme has survived and thrived notwithstanding over a century after its first publication and the selective pressures, and subsist by copying itself. The aim of this study is to evaluate the concepts of sovereignty and bare life in Lord of the Flies written by the English novelist, William Golding. An evaluation of the novel with the understanding of sovereignty as it is put forward by the Italian political theorist Giorgio Agamben will demonstrate that the text can be read as the formation of civilization, contrary to the point of view that interprets the novel as the disappearance of civilization. To this end, the examples of the state of exceptions, which Agamben thinks are intimately related to the formation of sovereignty and law, in the novel demonstrated. According to this approach, the social order is enabled only through the state of exception. In the novel, this state becomes apparent with the suspension of law/rule and also the degradation of the human from political existence to bare life. After the novel is analyzed through these concepts, the island and the outside the island will be shown to be similar in terms of the state of exception with a specific emphasis on the relation between the novel and imperialist/ colonial biopolitics, and thus the novel cannot be read as the disappearance of civilization. In conclusion, it will be underlined that the violence-forged relations of stranded boys on the island become as such as a result of the nature of sovereignty and biopolitics. Bu çalışmanın amacı İngiliz romancı William Golding’in Lord of the Flies (Sineklerin Tanrısı) adlı distopik romanındaki egemenlik ve çıplak yaşam kavramlarını incelemektir. İtalyan siyaset kuramcısı Giorgio Agamben’in egemenlik anlayışı ile bu romanın incelenmesi, romanı medeniyetin yok oluşu şeklinde yorumlayan bakış açısının tersine romanın medeniyetin oluşumuna dair bir metin olarak da okunabileceğini gösterecektir. Bu bağlamda, Agamben’in egemenliğin ve yasanın oluşumu ile yakından ilgili olduğunu düşündüğü istina hallerinin romandaki örnekleri ortaya koyulacaktır. Bu yaklaşıma göre toplumsal düzenin oluşumu ancak istisna halinin varlığı ile mümkündür. Bu hal, romanda kimi zaman bir yasanın/kuralın askıya alınması ile kimi zaman ise politik bir varlık olarak insanın çıplak yaşama indirgenmesi ile ortaya çıkmaktadır. Roman bu kavramlar ışığında incelendikten sonra ise romanın emperyalist ve sömürgeci biyosiyaset ile olan ilişkisi irdelenerek ada ve dış dünya arasında istisna hali bakımından bir fark olmadığı ve tam da bu nedenle adadaki olayların medeniyetin yok oluşu şeklinde yorumlanamayacağı ifade edilecektir. Sonuç olarak ise ıssız bir adada mahsur kalmış bir grup çocuğun giderek şiddetle şekillenen ilişkilerinin egemenlik ve biyosiyasetin doğası gereği bu hale geldiği vurgulanacaktır.

Sömürgecilik sonrası İngiliz edebiyatının temel öğeleri arasında batı kültürel egemenliğinin tersine çevrilmesi ve sömürgecilik döneminin ötekileştirilmiş karakterlerinin ve temalarının yer değiştirmesi bulunmaktadır. Tarihsel, sosyal ve kültürel olarak sömürgecilik sonrası edebiyat mitlerden günümüze batı kültürünün ortak bilinçaltında yer alan imgeleri ve efsaneleri yapısökümüne uğratmaktadır Bu nedenle, çağdaş İngiliz yazını içinde sömürgecilik sonrası edebiyatın örneklerini çalışmak, eski sömürgelerle batı kültürü arasındaki kültürel çatışmayı, günümüzün kültürel ortamı içerisinde yorumlayabilmek açısından önem taşımaktadır. Kendi kültürü ile sömürgecinin kültürü arasında sıkışmış olan bireylerin ikilemi ve öykünmeciliği ancak böyle anlaşılabilmektedir.Dolayısıyla, bu çalışmada Karayip kökenli İngiliz yazar ve şair Derek Wallcott'un Omeros adlı epik şiirinde kimlik, kültürel kökenlerden uzaklaşma, öykünme, ikilem, tarihsel ve kültürel değişim, dilde melezleşme, mitler ve antiemperyalizm kavramları incelenecektir. Bu eserde Wallcott öncelikle eski Yunan mitlerini değişikliklere uğratarak, sömürgecinin bakış açısını dönüştürüp, değişime uğrayan mitler üzerinden sömürülenin bakış açısını yansıtmaktadır. Değişime uğrayan bu mitler üzerinden de sömürge topraklarındaki turistik gezileri, mitik işgallerle özdeşleştirerek, tarihsel olarak sömürgeciliğe göndermeler yapmaktadır. Bu epik şiir aracılığıyla adanın kültürel kökenlerinden ne kadar uzaklaştığını, kültürel görünümünün dünyanın her hangi bir yeriyle özdeşlik kazandığını vurgulamaktadır. In this work, Walcottt initially transforms the point of view of the colonizer by changing the old Greek myths, and reflects the point of view of the colonized through the deconstructed myths. Furthermore, by identifying the touristic travels in colonized lands with mythic invasions through the deconstructed myths, he makes allusions to the colonialism. Thanks to this epic poem, he underlines the fact that the island has alienated from its own cultural roots to a great extent and its cultural appearance has gained a similar identity with any other place in the world. 80

Frankenstein ve Dracula adlı romanlardaki Gotik Öğeler: Canavar temsilinde tekinsizlik.Bu çalışmada on dokuzuncu yüzyıl İngiliz yazarları Marry Shelley ve Bram Stoker'ın Frankenstein ve Dracula başlıklı romanları, tekinsizlik bağlamında Sigmund Freud'un `The Uncanny` başlıklı makalesi temel alınarak incelenmiş ve her iki romanda da okuyucuyu ve karakterleri tekinsizlik kavramına sürükleyen durumlar açıklanmıştır. İnceleme her iki romanın da baş karakterleri olan `Canavar` ve Jonathan Harker' ın gerek içinde bulundukları tekinsiz durumlar, gerekse çevrelerindekileri sürükledikleri bu alışılmadık durum, Gothic romanın temel elemanları dikkate alınarak çlışılmıştır.Her iki romanda da gotik unsurların, karakterler özelinde okuyucu üzerinde korku ve tekinsizlik ortaya çıkardığı görülmüştür. Gothic Elements as Reflected in Frankenstein and Dracula: The Uncanny in The Representation of EvilIn this thesis, the novels of the nineteenth century British writers Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker and their novels Frankenstein and Dracula are examined respectively with reference to Sigmund Freud's article titled `The Uncanny` focusing on the context of the uncanny and the situations that lead readers and characters to the concept of the uncanny. In both novels, the main characters `Monster` and Jonathan Harker have been elaborated by taking into account the uncanny situations they are in and around them, based on the the basic elements of the Gothic novel.In both novels, it is seen that gothic elements caused fear and uncanny on the reader and the characters as well. This feeling pushes people to adopt unfamiliar approaches in situations they are or not used to. Thus, the characters begin to question life by internalising fear. Not only characters, but readers can feel it in the same vein. One of the aims of the gothic novel which is to drive the reader to fear and hesitation, is conveyed through both the main and minor characters in these novels.In this thesis, the gothic creatures and their unusual situations will be analysed in the two novels written in the same periods within the framework of the gothic elements based on Freud's article. 70

İnsanların ölümle olan ilişkileri antropolog Ernest Becker, psikiyatrist Robert Jay Lifton ve sosyolog-felsefeci Zygmunt Bauman'ın kuramlarına dayanarak incelenmiştir. Becker insanların ölüm korkularının üstesinden gelmek için başvurduğu yollar için `ölümün yadsınması` terimini kullanır. Lifton insanların biyolojik ve tarihsel olarak birbirlerine bağlı olduklarını öne sürer; böylece varlıkları ölümle sona ermez ve `sembolik ölümsüzlük`e sahip olurlar. Bauman ölüme dair bilginin üstünün örtülmesine yarayan `yaşam stratejileri`ni tartışır. Bu üç kuramcı farklı terimler kullansalar da ele aldıkları kavramlar benzerdir. Bu çalışmada kullanılan kuramlarının hepsi insanların ölümlülükleriyle baş etmek için hangi yollarla ölümsüzlük yanılsamaları yarattıklarını inceler ve bu kuramlara göre ölümsüzlük yanılsamaları insanların içinde yaşadığı kültürün ürünüdür. Bu kuramlar varoluşçu-psikanalizci bir bakış açısına sahiptir: İnsan varoluşuna ilişkin ölümlülük meselesini ele aldıkları için varoluşçu, ölümlülük sorununa verilen tepkiler bilinçdışı olarak oluştuğu için psikanalizci bir bakış açısı içerirler.Bu tez bu kuramları seçilen edebi metinlerin yakın okumasına uygulayarak bu tür ölümsüzlük yanılsamalarının Shakespeare'in Macbeth, Kral Lear ve Hamlet adlı oyunlarında da görüldüğünü göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu yanılsamalar başkarakterlerin davranışlarında örneklenmekle birlikte, bunu daha iyi açıklamak amacıyla diğer karakterlerin yaşadığı ya da oyunlarda tasvir edilen toplumlarda yaygın olan yanılsamalara da işaret edilmiştir. Kuramlar geniş bir yelpazede insan davranışlarını kapsadığı için, ölümsüzlük yanılsamaları yaratmanın çok çeşitli yolları vardır. Oyunların her birinde bulunan ölümsüzlük yanılsamaları bu çeşitliliği yansıtmaktadır. Kuramlar için olduğu kadar metinler arasındaki olası karşılaştırmalar tezin Sonuç bölümünde yer alacaktır.Macbeth'te savaşta sağ kalmanın ve güçlü bir toplumsal düzenin sağladığı ölümsüzlük yanılsaması kişinin soyunu sürdürecek çocukların meydana getirilmesi ve krallığı ve zürriyeti simgeleyen taca sahip olunması ile güçlendirilmelidir. Macbeth'in çocuğu olmamasına karşın tahtı sonsuza kadar elinde tutma arzusu ve dolayısıyla tahta tehdit olarak gördüğü kişileri öldürmesi karşı tepki olarak İskoç halkının kolektif ölümsüzlük projesine yol açar. Kral Lear'daki toprak, iktidar ve maddi varlıkların paylaşımı ve mülkiyeti ile bunların sonraki kuşaklarca miras alınmasıyla somutlaşan kolektif ölümsüzlük yanılsaması temasının insanın varoluşunu genişletme arzusuyla bağlantılı olduğu gösterilmiştir. Lear bir ölüm ve yeniden doğuş sürecinden geçtikten sonra bu yanılsamaların insanların ölümlü doğası karşısındaki boşunalığını görür. Hamlet'in bu dünyayı olduğu kadar hayaletler âlemini de kapsayan ikili evreni oyunun başkahramanının bu dünyadaki yaşama alternatif olarak Platon'un ve Hristiyanlık öğretilerinden esinlenen ölümden sonraki sonsuz yaşam inancında ve öldükten sonra geride iyi bir isim bırakma arzusunda yansımasını bulur. Onun öldükten sonra hatırlanma ve ölüleri hatırlama isteği cenaze merasimlerinde ifade edilir. Her üç oyunda da bu yanılsamalar Becker, Lifton ve Bauman'ın kuramlarının öne sürdüğü gibi kültürel olarak yaratılmıştır ve kaçınılmaz olan ölümü engelleyemez. Death is an inseparable part of life and human beings are always faced with it. Yet, they cannot accept their mortality and tend to deny death by creating illusions of immortality. In this thesis, first an investigation is made about the ways this denial occurs. The relationship of human beings with death is studied by looking at theories of anthropologist Ernest Becker, psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton, and sociologist-philosopher Zygmunt Bauman. Becker uses the term `denial of death` for the ways human beings call upon to try to overcome their fear of death. Lifton claims that human beings are connected biologically and historically; therefore, their existence does not end with death and they have `symbolic immortality.` Bauman discusses `life strategies` which are useful for covering up the knowledge of death. Even though these three theorists use different terminology, the concepts they consider are similar. Their theories used in this study all address the ways in which human beings create illusions of immortality to cope with their mortality and according to these theories illusions of immortality are products of culture human beings live in. These theories have an existentialist-psychoanalytical outlook: existentialist because they address the issue of mortality related to human existence, psychoanalytical because the responses to the problem of mortality are created unconsciously.By applying these theories to a close reading of the opted literary texts, this thesis aims to show that such illusions of immortality can be observed in Shakespeare's Macbeth, King Lear and Hamlet, too. Although these illusions are exemplified in the behaviour of the main characters, to enhance their explanation the illusions experienced by other characters or prevalent in the societies depicted in the plays are also pointed to. As the theories cover a wide range of human behaviour, there are diverse ways of creating illusions of immortality. The immortality strategies found in each play reflect this diversity. Possible comparisons between the theories as well as their reflection in the plays will be offered in the Conclusion of the thesis.In Macbeth, the illusion of immortality provided by survival in battle and a strong social order needs to be strengthened by procreation of children that will continue one's line and the possession of the crown that symbolises kingship and longevity. Macbeth's desire to possess the throne forever although he does not have any children, and therefore murdering those whom he sees as threats to the throne leads to the collective immortality project of the Scottish people as a counter-reaction. The theme of distribution and ownership of land, power and material objects and the collective illusion of immortality substantiated by the inheritance of these by the progeny in King Lear is shown to be related to the human desire to extend existence. After undergoing a death and rebirth process, Lear sees the futility of these illusions in the face of the mortal nature of human beings. The dual universe of Hamlet that encompasses this world as well as the realm of ghosts is reflected in its hero's belief in an eternal afterlife inspired by the doctrines of Plato and Christianity as an alternative to life in this world and his desire to leave a good name behind when he dies. His wish to be remembered posthumously and to remember the dead finds expression in funerary rites. In all the three plays, the illusions are culturally created as the theories of Becker, Lifton and Bauman suggest and cannot prevent death which is inevitable. 89

Bu çalışmada, ters yüz sınıf modeli ile İngilizce konuşma becerilerinin öğretilmesinin, yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğrenen öğrencilerin öğrenen özerkliği, iletişim kurma istekliliği ve karşı dilde konuşma kaygısı üzerine olan etkileri incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, ileriki çalışmalara yol göstermek amacıyla öğrencilerin ters yüz sınıf modeli aracılığıyla konuşma becerilerinin öğretimine karşı tutumları araştırılmıştır. Bu araştırma, Türkiye'deki bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim görmekte olan 55 İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı bölümü öğrencisinin katılımıyla 2016-2017 akademik yılı bahar döneminde karma yöntem yaklaşımı benimsenerek gerçekleştirildi. Nicel aşamada, yarı deneysel bir tasarımla, bir kontrol (n=27) ve bir deney grubu (n=28) oluşturuldu. Katılımcılara dönem başında üç ölçekten oluşan bir ön test (öğrenen özerkliği, iletişim kurma istekliliği ve ikinci dilde konuşma kaygısı) uygulandı. Deney grubunda yapılan on haftalık uygulama sonrasında, her iki gruptaki öğrencilere test uygulandı. Nitel aşamada, yapılan uygulamanın sonunda öğrencilerin ters yüz sınıf modeli hakkındaki fikirleri almak için deney grubundaki katılımcılara dört açık uçlu görüşme sorusu soruldu.Araştırmadaki nicel veriler SPSS 21.00 ile analiz edildi. Bağımlı örneklem ve bağımsız örneklem t-testleriyle yapılan öğrenim müdahalenin etkinliği test edildi. . Nitel veriler, tematik analizle incelendi. Çalışma sonuçları, ters yüz sınıf modelinin, İngilizce konuşma derslerinde iyi ve doğru uygulanması durumunda, öğrencilerin öğrenme özerkliği ve iletişim kurma istekliliği seviyelerini önemli ölçüde arttırabileceğini ve konuşma kaygılarını dikkate değer bir şekilde düşürebileceğini göstermiştir. Geleneksel sınıf modeliyle kıyaslandığında, ters yüz edilmiş öğrenme yaklaşımı yabancı dil öğrenen öğrencilere özellikle de konuşma becerisini geliştirmek isteyen öğrencilere birçok avantaj sağlamaktadır. Böylece bu yaklaşım İngilizce konuşma derslerinde öğrencilerin hem sınıf içinde hem de sınıf dışında İngilizceye maruz kalma oranını artırmak için uygulanabilir. This study aims to examine the effects of teaching speaking skills through Flipped Classroom Model on EFL students' autonomy, willingness to communicate, and anxiety while speaking English. Moreover, the students' perceptions towards the flipped speaking instruction were explored to pave the way for further studies. A mixed-method study was conducted with the participation of 55 EFL students in the spring term of 2016-2017 education year at a public university in Turkey. With a quasi-experimental design, one control (n=27) and one experimental group (n=28) were created for the quantitative phase of the study. The participants were pre-tested at the beginning of the term with three scales (i.e., learner autonomy, willingness to communicate, and L2 speaking anxiety). After ten weeks of treatment in the experimental group, both groups were also post-tested at the end of the term. In the qualitative phase, the students' ideas about their experience in the flipped learning were gathered with four open-ended interview questions at the end of the intervention. Quantitative data were analyzed with SPSS 21.00. Paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests were run in order to test the effectiveness of the intervention. Qualitative data were analyzed manually through thematic analysis. The results of this study indicated that, if implemented well in L2 speaking classes, the Flipped Classroom Model could increase students' autonomous learning levels and willingness to communicate levels significantly. Moreover, it could lower students' speaking anxiety considerably. When compared to the traditional classroom model, flipped learning has provided various advantages to language learners, especially those who aim to develop their speaking skills. Therefore, this model could be implemented in EFL speaking classes to increase students' exposure to English both in and out of the classroom. 146
