The Anap Muput Forest Management Unit (AMFMU) located in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia is a production forest. It have undergone at least one or two cycle of selective logging where valuable timber species are depleting. Therefore the structure, composition and productivity of the re growth forests are quite different from the virgin stands. Measuring the diversity is one of the ways to access the soundness of ecological ecosystems. This study aim to collect information on tree diversity, forest structure and species composition. A total of 61 circular plots of 25-m radius were established covering a total area of 7.67 hectares. Trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) of 10 cm and above were recorded. Species composition, diversity, relative density (RD), relative basal area (RBA) and relative frequency (RF) and important value index (IVI) were calculated. A total of 5,871 trees comprised of 66 families, 208 genera and 827 species were recorded. Dipterocarpaceae was the most dominant family with 31.8% of trees. Shorea was the dominant genus, while Macaranga hosei of Euphorbiaceae with 193 trees is the most dominant species here. Shorea collaris was the highest record for Dipterocarpaceae with 176 stands. The highest IVI of trees in lowland dipterocarp forest was Shorea macroptera ssp. baillonii with the value of 84.73 though it only represented 1.8% of the total IVI of the area. At Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H’) of 3.44, the diversity of logged-over lowland dipterocarp forest in the study area is considered highly diverse. The results of this study strengthen the importance to manage the forest sustainably as timber industry is important for the state’s economy.

The rise of palm oil as the world’s most consumed vegetable oil has coincided with exponential growth in palm oil research\ud activity. Bibliometric analysis of research outputs reveals a distinct imbalance in the type of research being undertaken, notably a\ud disproportionate focus on biofuel and engineering topics. Recognising the expansion of oil palm agriculture across the tropics and\ud the increasing awareness of environmental, social and economic impacts, we seek to re-orient the existing research agenda\ud towards one that addresses the most fundamental and urgent questions defined by the palm oil stakeholder community. Following\ud consultation with 659 stakeholders from 38 countries, including palm oil growers, government agencies, non-governmental\ud organisations and researchers, the highest priority research questions were identified within 13 themes. The resulting 279\ud questions, including 26 ranked as top priority, reveal a diversity of environmental and social research challenges facing the\ud industry, ranging from the ecological and ecosystem impacts of production, to the livelihoods of plantation workers and smallholder\ud communities. Analysis of the knowledge type produced from these questions underscores a clear need for fundamental science\ud programmes, and studies that involve the consultation of non-academic stakeholders to develop ‘transformative’ solutions to the\ud oil palm sector. Stakeholders were most aligned in their choice of priority questions across the themes of policy and certification\ud related themes, and differed the most in environmental feedback, technology and smallholder related themes. Our\ud recommendations include improved regional academic leadership and coordination, greater engagement with private and public\ud stakeholders of Africa, and Central and South America, and enhanced collaborative efforts with researchers in the major\ud consuming countries of India and China.

A low-cost runoff and sediment monitoring technique which uses rectangular plots and collection devices is described. The technique is presently being tested near Hobu Community School, approximately 15 km NE of the Papua New Guinea University of Technology, Lae. Sediment and runoff are being monitored on four plots of Leucaena leucocephala seedlings, with two of these plots interplanted with sweet potato (Ipomea batatas). The plots are inexpensive to construct and maintain, as well as being easy to replicate and control.

Ten topographic analysis methods were employed to estimate watershed mean slopes for 13 small forested watersheds (32 to 131 mi2) in East Texas. Of the ten methods employed, the mean slope curve is the most accurate but also the most tedious and laborious one. The method can be simplified by measuring only the lengths of five contours and the areas between these contours within the watershed with little loss of its accuracy. Watershed slopes estimated by the contour length method, the grid contour method, the systematic slope sampling method, and the simplified contour length method are satisfactory for general purposes and relatively simple. The watershed circumference-stream length method, the length-width axis method, the Justin method, and the regression plane method are not suitable for estimating watershed slopes in East Texas without modification.
