In this study, we will investigate 5-year-olds' ability to match emotional prosody with emotional facial configurations when they are forced to choose between emotions across valence (i.e., positive or negative) categories. Specifically, participants will be shown two faces and hear an utterance spoken with emotional prosody. They will be instructed to choose which face matches the emotion of the prosody. Prosody and faces will occupy four discrete emotion categories: two positive (happy and surprise) and two negative (anger and sadness). Participants will choose between the target face (e.g., happy) and a foil face across valence (e.g., anger). This study will measure participants' eye gaze and accuracy. We predict that overall 5-year-olds will be significantly more accurate than chance (50%) on this task.
