When evaluating published studies on the production of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), it is possible to observe that there is no consensus on when blood should be collected and processed. Some perform blood collection before surgery, prior to the administration of drugs, fluids, or any surgical trauma, while others collect blood during the perioperative period. The present objective was to determine the best moment for PRP production based on the platelet count. Blood samples were collected from 20 healthy female dogs at two distinct moments: before surgery, prior to anesthesia and fluid therapy (M0), and later, in the operation room, after administration of the anesthetics and intravenous fluids (M1). To obtain PRP, blood was centrifuged at 1200 rpm for ten minutes, then at 1600 rpm for ten minutes. Results showed that the blood collected at M1 had a 29% decrease in platelet count compared to M0 (highly significant statistical difference). It is recommended that blood collection, which is an essential step for producing platelet-rich plasma, shall be done during the pre-operative period.

Avaliaram-se dois protocolos para a produção de plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP) com o sangue de 20 cães adultos. Foram coletados três frascos de sangue em que um deles foi usado para produção do PRP por meio do protocolo A - centrifugação única a 1200rpm/10min -, o outro para fabricação do PRP pelo protocolo B - primeira centrifugação a 1200rpm/10min e a segunda centrifugação a 1600rpm/10min - e o terceiro para realização da contagem plaquetária no sangue total, que serviu de parâmetro para os valores alcançados no PRP. O protocolo no qual foi possível alcançar maior concentração plaquetária foi testado em outros 20 cães para avaliar sua reprodutibilidade. Constatou-se que o protocolo B resultou em maior plaquetometria em 100% das amostras e concluiu-se ser ele eficiente para a produção do PRP em cães. The objective of this paper was to analyze two protocols for the production of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in dogs. Peripheral blood of 20 adult dogs was collected into three tubes. The first was processed through protocol A - single centrifugation at 1200rpm for 10min - , the second was submitted to protocol B - a first centrifugation at 1200rpm for 10min and a second centrifugation at 1600rpm for 10min - and the third was used to perform platelet count in whole blood, which served as a parameter for values obtained in PRP. The protocol in which it was possible to achieve a higher platelet count was tested in other 20 dogs to evaluate its reproducibility. Protocol B resulted in a superior platelet count in 100% of the samples, concluding that the referred protocol is effective for PRP production in dogs.

The portable glucometer is a very useful tool for the human or veterinary health care professionals to obtain information about the patient’s glycemic state. The equipment is easy to handle and still gives precise results, however there are some factors that can alter its accuracy. Those should be avoided, so that inadequate therapeutic decisions are not made and dangerous situations for the patient’s life do not pass unnoticed. The object of this trial was to show the main factors of risk that can alter the results obtained with a portable glucometer. For the study 53 canines were used. 17 did not have precise results because they presented low hematocrit, the amount of blood collected was not enough or either a part was over the test strip or still, the accomplishment of the test passed the 15 seconds recommended by the manufacturer. It was concluded that those factors are susceptible to happen when a portable glucometer is used, and that the results obtained in those situations are not accurate, therefore, when observing them during the accomplishment of a glucose exam, the test should be repeated. O glicosímetro portátil é uma ferramenta útil para os profissionais da área de saúde, seja humana ou veterinária, obterem informações relacionadas ao estado glicêmico dos seus pacientes. O aparelho é de fácil manuseio e ainda fornece resultados precisos, apesar da possiblidade de alguns fatores alterarem a sua acurácia. Tais fatores, portanto, devem ser evitados, para impedir que decisões terapêuticas inadequadas sejam tomadas e para que o paciente não seja exposto a situações de risco para sua saúde. Assim, neste trabalho relatam-se os principais fatores que podem alterar os resultados obtidos com um glicosímetro portátil, medinate estudo em que se utilizaram 53 animais da espécie canina. Desses, dezessete não tiveram resultados precisos, porque apresentavam baixo hematócrito, a quantidade de sangue coletado não foi suficiente ou uma parte ficou por cima da tira teste ou, ainda, a realização do teste ultrapassou os quinze segundos recomendados pelo fabricante. Conclui-se que esses fatores são passíveis de acontecerem quando se emprega o glicosímetro portátil e que os resultados alcançados nessas situações não são precisos. One of the ways of monitoring the glucose concentration in the blood is with a portable device, known as glucometer. The equipment, developed to measure the glycemia of human patients, was used in this experiment with the purpose of verifying if the results of samples of dogs’ blood are also reliable. To perform the exam a drop of capillary blood from the ear of 36 dogs was collected. The mean variation when comparing the glucometer and the laboratorial reference method was 7.90%, being this result within the patterns established by regulatory organs of the area, such as the American Diabetes Association (ADA). It was concluded that the portable glucometer is a reliable tool to dose and/or monitor dogs glycemia, having as advantages the practicality and speed for obtaining the results.
