Purpose: Screening can help in early detection of osteoporosis and osteopenia and help in recommending appropriate treatment thus reducing fracture-related morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the contributing factors to osteoporosis and osteopenia among out-patients aged above 55 years. Methodology: The study employed randomized clinical trials (RCTs). The identified patients were screened using bone tests such as DXA, quantitative ultrasound, and the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) as the standard. This was measured using the Calcaneal Quantitative Ultra Sound (QUS). The study also used a structured questionnaire to identify the socio-demographic profile of the patients and clinical risk assessments for osteoporosis or fracture risk. The sample size was 250 out-patients aged above 55 years. Findings: The study found out that lower back pain and knee pain were the common musculoskeletal presentations. It was evident that osteoporosis and osteopenia was common in out-patients who had low exposure to sunlight (71%). The study found that major contributing factors to osteoporosis and osteopenia are advanced age, low bone mineral density score, hysterectomy, gender, and educational status. Conclusion: The study conclude that people aged above 55 years are at high risk of suffering from osteoporosis and osteopenia. Recommendation: The study recommend people above 55 years to undergo screening to facilitate early detection of osteoporosis and osteopenia. This will help them in getting appropriate and timely management of symptoms and improve their quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Two models, the Help with the Assessment of Adenopathy in Lung cancer (HAL) and Help with Oncologic Mediastinal Evaluation for Radiation (HOMER), were recently developed to estimate the probability of nodal disease in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as determined by endobronchial ultrasound-transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). The objective of this study was to prospectively externally validate both models at multiple centers. RESEARCH QUESTION: Are the HAL and HOMER models valid across multiple centers? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This multicenter prospective observational cohort study enrolled consecutive patients with PET-CT clinical-radiographic stages T1-3, N0-3, M0 NSCLC undergoing EBUS-TBNA staging. HOMER was used to predict the probability of N0 vs N1 vs N2 or N3 (N2|3) disease, and HAL was used to predict the probability of N2|3 (vs N0 or N1) disease. Model discrimination was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC-AUC), and calibration was assessed using the Brier score, calibration plots, and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. RESULTS: Thirteen centers enrolled 1,799 patients. HAL and HOMER demonstrated good discrimination: HAL ROC-AUC = 0.873 (95%CI, 0.856-0.891) and HOMER ROC-AUC = 0.837 (95%CI, 0.814-0.859) for predicting N1 disease or higher (N1|2|3) and 0.876 (95%CI, 0.855-0.897) for predicting N2|3 disease. Brier scores were 0.117 and 0.349, respectively. Calibration plots demonstrated good calibration for both models. For HAL, the difference between forecast and observed probability of N2|3 disease was +0.012; for HOMER, the difference for N1|2|3 was −0.018 and for N2|3 was +0.002. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test was significant for both models (P = .034 and .002), indicating a small but statistically significant calibration error. INTERPRETATION: HAL and HOMER demonstrated good discrimination and calibration in multiple centers. Although calibration error was present, the magnitude of the error is small, such that the models are informative.

Human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are one of the major sources of global warming, which is threatening to reach a tipping point. Inspection systems that can provide direct information about critical factors causing global warming, such as systems for gas detection and location of gas sources, are urgently needed to analyze the fugitive emissions and take necessary actions. This thesis presents an autonomous robotic system capable of performing efficient exploration by selecting informative sampling positions for gas detection and gas distribution mapping – the Autonomous Remote Methane Explorer (ARMEx). In the design choice of ARMEx, a ground robot carries a spectroscopybased remote gas sensor, such as a Remote Methane Leak Detector (RMLD), that collects integral gas measurements along up to 30 m long optical-beams. The sensor is actuated to sample a large area inside an adjustable field of view, and with the mobility of the robot, adaptive sampling for high spatial resolution in the areas of interest is made possible to inspect large environments. In a typical gas sampling mission, the robot needs to localize itself and plan a traveling path to visit different locations in the area, which is a largely solved problem. However, the state-of-the-art prior to this thesis fell short of providing the capability to select informative sampling positions autonomously. This thesis introduces efficient measurement strategies to bring autonomy to mobile remote gas sensing. The strategies are based on sensor planning algorithms that minimize the number of measurements and distance traveled while optimizing the inspection criteria: full sensing coverage of the area for gas detection, and suitably overlapping sensing coverage of different viewpoints around areas of interest for gas distribution mapping. A prototype implementation of ARMEx was deployed in a large, real-world environment where inspection missions performed by the autonomous system were compared with runs teleoperated by human experts. In six experimental trials, the autonomous system created better gas maps, located more gas sources correctly, and provided better sensing coverage with fewer sensing positions than human experts.

K-indices have been produced and analyzed using two computer based methods for 1-min geomagnetic data from Sonmiani Geomagnetic Observatory (SON), located at 25.203° in latitude and 66.75° in longitude, for the period 2009–2011. The two methods used are Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) method and adaptive smoothing (AS) method. Solar quiet daily variation (Sq) and solar regular variation (Sr) curves are produced using FMI method and their comparison is drawn. Various statistical analyses have been carried out by comparing the K-indices obtained through AS method with other geomagnetic observatories having similar time zone and geomagnetic latitude aiming to validate our results. Resulting K-indices obtained from AS method are in a good match with nearby observatories irrespective of the K derivation method used for each of the observatories compared. Further, we have compared the K-indices obtained through AS and FMI methods and found the FMI has a tendency to shift the results to somewhat higher K-values than the AS method.

Günümüzde teknik olarak doğru ve maliyeti düşük sondaj uygulamaları çok kritik bir hale gelmiştir. Son birkaç on yılda, kuyu hidroliği büyük dikkat çekmiş ve buna bağlı olarak yüksek eğimli kuyular, uzun erişimli ve yatay kuyuların sayısında büyük artış görülmektedir. Bu sondaj ortamlarında formasyon basıncı ve formasyon çatlatma gradyeni arasındaki operasyonel pencere veya açıklık marjini genel olarak daha azdır ve sondaj dizisinin kuyu içerisine veya kuyudan dışarıya doğru olan manevrası sırasında meydana gelen kuyu içi basınç değişimlerinin veya dalgalanmalarının (surge veya swab olarak bilinmektedir) doğru bir şekilde tahmin edilmesi gerektiğini yansıtmaktadır. Formasyon basıncı ve formasyon çatlatma basıncı arasındaki açıklığın genel olarak küçük olduğu derindeniz kuyularının, uzun erişimli kuyuların (ERD) ve yüksek açılı kuyuların sondajı sırasında basınç dalgalanmalarının uygun bir şekilde tahmini önemi yadsınamaz bir gerçektir. Bu çalışmada, dizi hareketinden kaynaklanan basınç dalgalanmalarını hesaplayan yöntem Herschel-Bulkley akışkan modeli kullanılarak sunulmuştur ve sonuçlar Paradigm Sysdrill yazılımı (V.10) ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Çalışmada, basınç dalgalanmalarını bulmak için Merlo vd. (1995) tarafından tanıtılan sürtünme basınç kayıplarını Herschel-Bulkley akışkan için hesaplayan analitik denklemler kullanılmıştır.Sondaj dizisinin manevrası nedeniyle oluşan basınçların (surge ve swab) Herschel-Bulkley analitik modeli kullanılarak çözümü literatürde günümüze kadar yayınlanmamıştır ve bu yönüyle bu çalışma bir ilktir. Ancak, bu model denklemleri kullanılarak sondaj akışkanının sirkülasyonu sırasında meydana gelen sürtünme basınç kayıplarının (stand pipe pressure) belirlenmesine yönelik çalışmalar yayınlanmıştır. Çalışmada yapılan hesaplamalarda kuyunun düşey olduğu, kuyu anülüsünde dizinin merkezi olduğu (konsentrik), sondaj çamurunun sıkıştırılamaz akışkan olduğu ve kararlı akış durumları kabul edilmiştir.Ticari yazılım olan Paradigm Sysdrill (v.10) simülatörü sondaj kuyusunun planlanmasında, yön kontrolünde ve sondaj mühendisliği analizlerinde yaygın bir şekilde kullanılmaktadır. Barit-ağırlaştırılmış ve ağırlaştırılmamış su bazlı sepiolit çamurlar çalışmada kullanılmıştır. Sysdril yazılımından tahmin edilen sonuçlar farklılık göstermiştir ve kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmaları değerleri analitik model sonuçlarından alınanlara göre daha düşüktür. Kuyuiçi basınç dalgalanmaları (surge basınçları) Bingham Plastik ve Power Law reolojik modelleri kullanılarakta tahmin edilmiş ve sonuçlar Herschel-Bulkley model sonuçlarıyla karşılaştırılmıştır.Ayrıca, bu basınç dalgalanması üzerine etki eden parametreleri incelemek için duyarlılık analizi de gerçekleştirilmiştir. Kuyuiçi basınç dalgalanmaları dizi manevra hızı ve akışkan yoğunluğu ile doğrusal bir ilişki etkisi gösterirken, kuyu açıklığı (borehole clearance) doğrusal olmayan bir ilişki göstermiştir. Çalışma göstermiştir ki, kuyu içi basınç dalgalanması belli bir sıcaklık değerine kadar artan sıcaklıkla azalırken, daha sonra bu sıcaklıktan yüksek sıcaklıklarda basınç değerlerinde bir artış göstermiştir. Formasyon sıcaklığının çamur reolojisi ve kuyu içi basınç dalgalanması üzerine olan etkisini daha iyi anlayabilmek için belirtilen çamur örneklerinin reolojik sabitleri hem Fann35A döner viskometre hem de Fann50SL yüksek sıcaklık ve yüksek basınç (YSYB) reometresi kullanılarak ölçülmüştür. Sıcaklık koşullarını daha doğru canlandıran reometre ölçümlerinden elde edilen sonuçların viskometre sonuçlarından oldukça farklı değerler verdiği belirlenmiştir. Yüksek sıcaklıklı kuyuların analizinde viskometreden elde edilen sonuçlara göre yapılacak olan mühendislik analizlerinin yanlışlıklara ve dolayısıyla istenmeyen sorunlara neden olabileceği de gösterilmiştir. 350oF formasyon sıcaklığına kadar hem ağırlaştırılmış hem de ağırlaştırılmamış sepiolit çamurlarının sondaj dizisinin manevra hızlarının artırılmasına izin verdiği de belirlenmiştir. Bunula birlikte, doğru manevra hızlarının belirlenebilmesi için reometreye dayalı reolojik sabitlerin belirlenmesi gerekmektedir.Çalışmadan elde edilen diğer önemli sonuçlar aşağıda özet olarak verilmektedir:•Herschel-Bulkley modelinin analitik çözümü sonuçlarından elde edilen kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmaları (surge/swab) ticari yazılımın sonuçlarından daha iyi sonuç vermektedir. Analitik çözüm sonuçları daha yüksektir ve sonuçlar daha korunaklı ve güvenlikli bir çözüm vermektedir. •Kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmalarının artışına neden olan en önemli parametre manevra sırasındaki dizi hızının değeridir. Artan dizi hızıyla birlikte bu basınçlarda artmaktadır.•Kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmaları artan çmaur yoğunluğuyla birlikte artmaktadır, ancak artış oranı dizi hızındaki kadar yüksek değildir.•Dizi ve formasyon arasındaki anüler açıklık ile basınç dalgalanma değeri arasında ters bir ilişki vardır ve artan anüler açıklıkla birlikte basınç dalgalanmaları hızlı bir şekilde düşmektedir.•Hem barit-ağırlaştırılmış hem de ağırlaştırılmamış sepiolit temelli sondaj akışkanı durumunda, formasyon sıcaklığının dolayısı ile sondaj akışkanının belli bir değerine kadar (çamur jelleşmesi etkisi görülünceye kadar olan sıcaklık artışları) kuyu içi basınç dalgalanma (surge ve swab) değerlerinde azalma görülmektedir ve bu sıcaklık eşiğine (350o F) kadar manevra hızları arttırılabilir.•Sıcaklık ile birlikte değişen sondaj akışkanının reolojik sabitlerinin kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmaları (surge/swab) değerleri üzerine büyük etkisi vardır.•Sürtünme basınç kayıplarını daha doğru tahmin etmek için Herschel-Bulkley modelini göz önüne alan çamur yapışma sabiti (mud clinging constant) denklemleri ve/veya grafikleri günümüze kadar geliştirilmemiş ve literatürde yoktur. Bu nedenle, çalışmada Power Law akışkan için geliştirilmiş olan denklemler kullanılmıştır. •Yüksek sıcaklık koşullarında bütün özellikleri reometreden belirlenen sadece sepiolit temelli çamur özellikleri bu çalışmada kullanılmıştır. Diğer çamur türleri için (KCL, polimer temelli çamurlar, Lignosülfonat gibi) bu çalışma tekraralanabilir ve sepiolit çamur sonuçlarıyla karşılaştırılabilir. In drilling hydraulics, the estimation of surge and swab pressures is important due to the fact that, the excessive surge pressures generated by pipe movement in tripping operations may result in serious consequences such as blowout and formation damage. Tripping operation can be performed due to several reasons such as adding pipe stand to drillstring, changing worn bit, removing fallen parts from borehole (fishing) or running logging tools. The time spent in tripping operation is a significant portion of the total time spent during overall drilling operations. During the drilling of offshore wells in deep waters, extended reach drilling (ERD) wells and highly deviated wells, small margins are encountered between pore pressure and formation fracture pressure. In such cases, the proper prediction of surge and swab pressure may exhibit paramount importance in order to ensure trouble free and cost effective drilling operations. In this work, the method for estimating surge pressures by analytical calculations using Herschel-Bulkley rheological model is presented and the results are compared with those obtained from Paradigm Sysdrill software, version 10.In calculating the frictional pressure losses for Herschel-Bulkley model the equations introduced by Merlo, et al. (1995) are employed. The barite-weighted and unweighted fresh water sepiolite muds are used in this study. The results estimated with Sysdrill software shows discrepancy, and the surge pressures are lower as compare to the results taken from analytical model. The surge pressures are also estimated using Bingham Plastic and Power Law model, and results are compared with Herschel-Bulkley rheological model. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the major parameters that affect surge pressures. The effect of tripping speed and fluid density exhibits the direct relationship, while the effect of borehole clearance exhibits the inverse relationship to the surge pressures. The study shows that, upto the certain degree of temperature, the surge pressures decrease with the increase in formation temperature, and then afterwards the surge pressures display an increment. For better understanding of formation temperature effect on mud rheology and surge pressures, the rheological constants for the mentioned mud samples are taken, using both Fann35A rotational viscometer and Fann50SL high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) rheometer. It is also determined that at the formation temperature up to 350°F, the use of both weighted and unweighted sepiolite muds allow to fasten the tripping speed of the drillstring. 93

Kuyuiçi basınç dalgalanmaları dizi manevra hızı ve akışkan yoğunluğu ile doğrusal bir ilişki etkisi gösterirken, kuyu açıklığı (borehole clearance) doğrusal olmayan bir ilişki göstermiştir. Çalışma göstermiştir ki, kuyu içi basınç dalgalanması belli bir sıcaklık değerine kadar artan sıcaklıkla azalırken, daha sonra bu sıcaklıktan yüksek sıcaklıklarda basınç değerlerinde bir artış göstermiştir. Formasyon sıcaklığının çamur reolojisi ve kuyu içi basınç dalgalanması üzerine olan etkisini daha iyi anlayabilmek için belirtilen çamur örneklerinin reolojik sabitleri hem Fann35A döner viskometre hem de Fann50SL yüksek sıcaklık ve yüksek basınç (YSYB) reometresi kullanılarak ölçülmüştür. Sıcaklık koşullarını daha doğru canlandıran reometre ölçümlerinden elde edilen sonuçların viskometre sonuçlarından oldukça farklı değerler verdiği belirlenmiştir. Yüksek sıcaklıklı kuyuların analizinde viskometreden elde edilen sonuçlara göre yapılacak olan mühendislik analizlerinin yanlışlıklara ve dolayısıyla istenmeyen sorunlara neden olabileceği de gösterilmiştir. 350oF formasyon sıcaklığına kadar hem ağırlaştırılmış hem de ağırlaştırılmamış sepiolit çamurlarının sondaj dizisinin manevra hızlarının artırılmasına izin verdiği de belirlenmiştir. Bunula birlikte, doğru manevra hızlarının belirlenebilmesi için reometreye dayalı reolojik sabitlerin belirlenmesi gerekmektedir. Çalışmadan elde edilen diğer önemli sonuçlar aşağıda özet olarak verilmektedir: • Herschel-Bulkley modelinin analitik çözümü sonuçlarından elde edilen kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmaları (surge/swab) ticari yazılımın sonuçlarından daha iyi sonuç vermektedir. Analitik çözüm sonuçları daha yüksektir ve sonuçlar daha korunaklı ve güvenlikli bir çözüm vermektedir. • Kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmalarının artışına neden olan en önemli parametre manevra sırasındaki dizi hızının değeridir. Artan dizi hızıyla birlikte bu basınçlarda artmaktadır. • Kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmaları artan çmaur yoğunluğuyla birlikte artmaktadır, ancak artış oranı dizi hızındaki kadar yüksek değildir. • Dizi ve formasyon arasındaki anüler açıklık ile basınç dalgalanma değeri arasında ters bir ilişki vardır ve artan anüler açıklıkla birlikte basınç dalgalanmaları hızlı bir şekilde düşmektedir. • Hem barit-ağırlaştırılmış hem de ağırlaştırılmamış sepiolit temelli sondaj akışkanı durumunda, formasyon sıcaklığının dolayısı ile sondaj akışkanının belli bir değerine kadar (çamur jelleşmesi etkisi görülünceye kadar olan sıcaklık artışları) kuyu içi basınç dalgalanma (surge ve swab) değerlerinde azalma görülmektedir ve bu sıcaklık eşiğine (350o F) kadar manevra hızları arttırılabilir. • Sıcaklık ile birlikte değişen sondaj akışkanının reolojik sabitlerinin kuyu içi basınç dalgalanmaları (surge/swab) değerleri üzerine büyük etkisi vardır. • Sürtünme basınç kayıplarını daha doğru tahmin etmek için Herschel-Bulkley modelini göz önüne alan çamur yapışma sabiti (mud clinging constant) denklemleri ve/veya grafikleri günümüze kadar geliştirilmemiş ve literatürde yoktur. Bu nedenle, çalışmada Power Law akışkan için geliştirilmiş olan denklemler kullanılmıştır. • Yüksek sıcaklık koşullarında bütün özellikleri reometreden belirlenen sadece sepiolit temelli çamur özellikleri bu çalışmada kullanılmıştır. Diğer çamur türleri için (KCL, polimer temelli çamurlar, Lignosülfonat gibi) bu çalışma tekraralanabilir ve sepiolit çamur sonuçlarıyla karşılaştırılabilir., In drilling hydraulics, the estimation of surge and swab pressures is important due to the fact that, the excessive surge pressures generated by pipe movement in tripping operations may result in serious consequences such as blowout and formation damage. Tripping operation can be performed due to several reasons such as adding pipe stand to drillstring, changing worn bit, removing fallen parts from borehole (fishing) or running logging tools. The time spent in tripping operation is a significant portion of the total time spent during overall drilling operations. During the drilling of offshore wells in deep waters, extended reach drilling (ERD) wells and highly deviated wells, small margins are encountered between pore pressure and formation fracture pressure. In such cases, the proper prediction of surge and swab pressure may exhibit paramount importance in order to ensure trouble free and cost effective drilling operations. In this work, the method for estimating surge pressures by analytical calculations using Herschel-Bulkley rheological model is presented and the results are compared with those obtained from Paradigm Sysdrill software, version 10. In calculating the frictional pressure losses for Herschel-Bulkley model the equations introduced by Merlo, et al. (1995) are employed. The barite-weighted and unweighted fresh water sepiolite muds are used in this study. The results estimated with Sysdrill software shows discrepancy, and the surge pressures are lower as compare to the results taken from analytical model. The surge pressures are also estimated using Bingham Plastic and Power Law model, and results are compared with Herschel-Bulkley rheological model. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the major parameters that affect surge pressures. The effect of tripping speed and fluid density exhibits the direct relationship, while the effect of borehole clearance exhibits the inverse relationship to the surge pressures. The study shows that, upto the certain degree of temperature, the surge pressures decrease with the increase in formation temperature, and then afterwards the surge pressures display an increment. For better understanding of formation temperature effect on mud rheology and surge pressures, the rheological constants for the mentioned mud samples are taken, using both Fann35A rotational viscometer and Fann50SL high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) rheometer. The problem of gas detection is relevant to many real-world applications, such as leak detection in industrial settings and landfill monitoring. In this paper, we address the problem of gas detection in large areas with a mobile robotic platform equipped with a remote gas sensor. We propose an algorithm that leverages a novel method based on convex relaxation for quickly solving sensor placement problems, and for generating an efficient exploration plan for the robot. To demonstrate the applicability of our method to real-world environments, we performed a large number of experimental trials, both on randomly generated maps and on the map of a real environment. Our approach proves to be highly efficient in terms of computational requirements and to provide nearly-optimal solutions.

Rotting fruits offer all of the known resources required for the livelihood of Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae). During fruit fermentation, carbohydrates and proteins are decomposed to produce volatile alcohols and amines, respectively. It is hypothesized that D. melanogaster adults can detect these chemical cues at a distance to identify and locate the decaying fruits. In the present paper, we compared the olfactory responses and movement of male flies varying in mating status and nutritional state to methanol, ethanol, and ammonia sources using a glass Y-tube olfactometer. In general, ethanol vapor at low to moderate concentrations repelled more hungry mated males than satiated ones. In contrast, methanol showed little difference in the attractiveness to males at different nutritional states and mating status. Moreover, ammonia attracted more hungry mated males. The attractiveness increased almost linearly with ammonia concentration from lowest to highest. When ammonia and artificial diet were put together in the odor arm, the responses of male flies to mixed odor mimicked the response to ammonia. Furthermore, odorant concentration, mating status, and nutritional state affected the flies’ dispersal. Mated and starved males dispersed at a higher rate than virgin and satiated ones. Thus, our results showed that starved, mated males increased dispersal and preferred ammonia that originated from protein.

Methanol is among the most common short-chain alcohols in fermenting fruits, the natural food and oviposition sites of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Our previous results showed that cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs) were associated with methanol detoxification in the larvae. Catalases, alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs), esterases (ESTs) and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) were specifically inhibited by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3-AT), 4-methylpyrazole (4-MP), triphenyl phosphate (TPP) and diethylmeleate (DEM), respectively. CYPs were inhibited by piperonyl butoxide (PBO) and 1-aminobenzotriazole (1-ABT). In the present paper, the involvements of these enzymes in methanol metabolism were investigated in female and male adults by determining the combination indices of methanol and their corresponding inhibitors. When PBO, 1-ABT, 3-AT, 4-MP and TPP were individually mixed with methanol, they exhibited significant synergism to the mortality of the adults after 72h of dietary exposure. In contrast, the DEM and methanol mixture showed additive effects. Moreover, methanol exposure dramatically increased CYP activity and up-regulated mRNA expression levels of several Cyp genes. Bioassays using different strains revealed that the variation in ADH activity and RNAi-mediated knockdown of α-Est7 significantly changed LC50 values for methanol. These results suggest that CYPs, catalases, ADHs and ESTs are partially responsible for methanol elimination in adults. It seems that there are some differences in methanol metabolism between larvae and adults, but not between female and male adults.

The FLUXNET2015 dataset provides ecosystem-scale data on CO2, water, and energy exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and other meteorological and biological measurements, from 212 sites around the globe (over 1500 site-years, up to and including year 2014). These sites, independently managed and operated, voluntarily contributed their data to create global datasets. Data were quality controlled and processed using uniform methods, to improve consistency and intercomparability across sites. The dataset is already being used in a number of applications, including ecophysiology studies, remote sensing studies, and development of ecosystem and Earth system models. FLUXNET2015 includes derived-data products, such as gap-filled time series, ecosystem respiration and photosynthetic uptake estimates, estimation of uncertainties, and metadata about the measurements, presented for the first time in this paper. In addition, 206 of these sites are for the first time distributed under a Creative Commons (CC-BY 4.0) license. Globally, soils store two to three times as much carbon as currently resides in the atmosphere, and it is critical to understand how soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and uptake will respond to ongoing climate change. In particular, the soil‐to‐atmosphere CO2 flux, commonly though imprecisely termed soil respiration (RS), is one of the largest carbon fluxes in the Earth system. An increasing number of high‐frequency RS measurements (typically, from an automated system with hourly sampling) have been made over the last two decades; an increasing number of methane measurements are being made with such systems as well. Such high frequency data are an invaluable resource for understanding GHG fluxes, but lack a central database or repository. Here we describe the lightweight, open‐source COSORE (COntinuous SOil REspiration) database and software, that focuses on automated, continuous and long‐term GHG flux datasets, and is intended to serve as a community resource for earth sciences, climate change syntheses and model evaluation. Contributed datasets are mapped to a single, consistent standard, with metadata on contributors, geographic location, measurement conditions and ancillary data. The design emphasizes the importance of reproducibility, scientific transparency and open access to data. While being oriented towards continuously measured RS, the database design accommodates other soil‐atmosphere measurements (e.g. ecosystem respiration, chamber‐measured net ecosystem exchange, methane fluxes) as well as experimental treatments (heterotrophic only, etc.). Flooding is a major concern for Canadian society as it is the costliest natural disaster type in Canada. Southern Ontario, which houses one-third of the Canadian population, is particularly affected by early spring floods following snowmelt. During the last three decades, there has been a shift in flooding events from March-April to earlier months due to earlier snowmelt coupled with extreme rain events. Hydrological models run with different scenarios of climate change suggest further enhancement of this shift in the future. These projections of streamflow are associated with a cascade of uncertainties due to the choice of Global Climate Models (GCM’s), climate change scenarios, downscaling methods or hydrological models. A large part of the uncertainty is also associated with internal variability of climate due to the chaotic nature of the climate system. Despite these uncertainties, little is known about the impact of atmospheric circulation on past streamflow in southern Ontario and how the internal variability of climate is expected to impact the overall uncertainties in the projections of the future hydrological processes. In this thesis, the Precipitation Runoff Modelling System (PRMS), a semi-distributed conceptual hydrological model, was established in four watersheds in southern Ontario to assess the impact of atmospheric circulation on the modulation of streamflow and number of high flows. Recurrent meteorological patterns (Or Weather regimes), based on 500hPa geopotential height (Z500), have been first identified in Northeastern North America using the k-means algorithm. The occurrences of these weather regimes patterns were used to create a regime-normalized hypothetical temperature and precipitation dataset that have been used as input in PRMS. Then, to investigate the future evolution of the hydrological processes, PRMS was forced with temperature and precipitation from the 50-members Canadian Regional Climate Model Large Ensemble (CRCM5-LE), a dynamically downscaled version of CanESM2-LE. The 50-members were classified into different classes of similar change in average temperature, precipitation and streamflow to identify the corresponding large-scale patterns. The specific focus of this analysis was on winter high flows, with the identification of a heavy rain and warm index, that can help to explain the generation of winter high flows in southern Ontario. The future evolution of these hydrometeorological extreme events, calculated for each member of CRCM5-LE, was analyzed with respect to the corresponding k-means weather regimes calculated for each member of CanESM2-LE. Finally, the uncertainties in the projections of the hydrometeorological extremes from the 50-members ensemble were compared to other sources of uncertainties using an analysis of variance applied to 504 simulations in the Big creek watershed. The high flows were projected using seven sets of PRMS parameters, 11 CMIP5 climate models forced with 2 scenarios of climate change and the 50 members of CRCM5-LE. The results, focusing on the winter season, showed that weather regimes High-Pressure (HP) and southerly winds (South) are associated with a higher average streamflow volume and high-flows frequency in the historical period. Regime HP is characterized by high geopotential height anomalies on top of the Great Lakes region together with higher temperature and precipitation amounts. Regime South is characterized by high Z500 anomalies in the Atlantic east coast and is associated with stronger southerly winds and higher precipitation amount in southern Ontario. The temporal increase in HP in the past contributed more than 40% of the increase in average streamflow in winter. In the future, all 50 members of CRCM5-LE ensemble produce an increase in January-February streamflow. 14% of the ensemble depict a larger streamflow increase due to increase in Z500 anomalies in the east coast. This pattern, well defined by the regimes South, is expected to become a major contributor in the generation of hydrometeorological extreme events in Southern Ontario in the future. Regime HP is expected to contribute less to the high-flows due to the disappearance of snow. Overall, the contribution of internal variability of climate to high flows will be stable through the 21st century, primarily due to an increase in rainfall as generators of high flow events. The results suggest that the regional representation of rainfall in the GCMs-RCMs chains will be a critical area to improve with great societal implications for floods.
