This chapter focuses on the men behind the scenes; those who make matches and promote events and those who prepare their boxers to fight in them. Dennis Hobson climbed from a Sheffield council estate via selling crockery and scrap metal to become one of the world’s best-known promoters, successfully challenging the hegemony of the American system. Dominic and John Ingle took over from their father and have maintained the reputation and success of their gym. The charity work of Sheffield trainer Glyn Rhodes saw him and his gym volunteers earn the honours Rhodes never attained in the ring. Veteran trainer Howard Rainey spends his time inventing contraptions to help both boxers and people with physical disabilities. Dave Coldwell overcame hardship and setbacks to become a globally renowned trainer and manager. A newcomer on the scene is Grant Smith, the kitchen fitter turned world champion trainer.

Over the past 15 years the genre now referred to as Sport for Peace and Development (SPD) has seen various policy initiatives in many theatres of conflict. Those in this field include variously non-governmental organisations (NGOs), charities, world organisations, sporting governing bodies, national governments, commercial entities, individual foundations and academics. The opportunities for debate on this issue are endless and have provided platforms for the most earnest humanitarians as well as the self-aggrandising and delusional. In the elusive search for world peace and reconciliation in war-damaged societies people will understandably try various means of bringing about reconciliation. In such circumstances two objectives dominate the political process. The first is that armed combat is prevented and peace – however tenuous –is sustained. Secondly, future stability has to be sought and promoted both by those who seek to keep the peace and by those that began or participated in the conflict. There are various issues integral to such pursuits. The most obvious concerns the best way of achieving such desired outcomes and begs the supplementary question as to the people best placed to pursue them. What follows permits an ethnographic account to consider the promotion and delivery of specific SDP projects in post-conflict Liberia, West Africa which provides for a micro-study SDP in action Such delivery can be positioned variously as both the intentional use of sport –more specifically football – for rehabilitation and peace-building and as an everyday practice and national obsession that presented opportunities to intersect the game of football with moral, social and politically motivated interventions focused towards building a peaceful civil society. A challenge in a country like Liberia, that is scarcely visited by its funders and often instils fear amongst those academics tasked to monitor projects, is regulating practices and evaluating impact in a meaningful way. Liberia often presents a seductive narrative and image to the SDP apparatachiks. But, we might ask, at what consequence to the local populations whose primary focus is daily sustenance and survival? Do such interests do no harm?

The article draws on the findings of two years’ ethnographic fieldwork in exploring how gang activity in Newham, East London is combatted by faith-based organisation, Targeted Against Gangs (TAG). More specifically, the authors examine how TAG seeks to reform the identities of young male gang members according to the principles of what we have called ‘Pentecostal realist masculinity’. The characteristics of this reformed masculinity include an awareness of the racial (and racist) dynamics of criminal and wider society, a focus on individuals thriving within fraternal networks, and the desire to channel creative energies into legitimate entrepreneurial activities. Though this strategy did not mount a direct challenge to the racist societal structures it identified, it was effective in reducing levels of gang violence in East London.

This thesis addresses the idea that colony formation effectively increases the size of a phytoplankter thereby reducing grazing losses by deterring ingestion by zooplankton. It was initially hypothesized that colonies of Dinobryon (Ochromonadales, Chrysophyceae) deter zooplankton grazers, and that their spring population declined either because of a drop in the mean colony size of the Dinobryon population or from an increase in the abundances of large zooplankton grazers capable of ingesting large colonies. From January to May 1983 a small dystrophic lake was sampled weekly at three discrete depths at two stations. In the samples collected from one station, two species of Dinobryon, D. cylindricum Imhof and D. diverqens Imhof, as well as all zooplankton species were enumerated and morphometric variables of Dinobryon colonies were measured. The results showed that, alone, each of the original hypotheses could not account for the population and colony size dynamics of the Dinobryon species present in the lake. A new hypothesis was generated from the results which suggested that Dinobryon colonies minimized grazing losses to small grazers because of increased size and to larger grazers by fragmentation upon capture. Subsequent evaluation of the assumptions of this new hypothesis, using both the original data and new data from the second station, added further support to the hypothesis.
