In this work, the thermo-acoustic instabilities of a gas turbine model combustor, the so-called SFB606 combustor, are numerically investigated using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with tabulated chemistry and Artificial Thickened Flame (ATF) approach. The main focus is a detailed analysis of the thermo-acoustic cycle and the accompanied equivalence ratio oscillations and their associated convective time delay. In particular, the variations of the thermo-chemical state and flame characteristics over the thermo-acoustic cycle are investigated. For the operating point flame B (Pth = 25kW, Φ = 0.7), the burner exhibits thermo-acoustic instabilities with a dominant frequency of 392 Hz, the acoustic eigenmode of the inner air inlet duct. These oscillations are accompanied by an equivalence ratio oscillation, which exhibits a convective time delay between the injection in the inner swirler and the flame zone. Two LES, one adiabatic and one accounting for heat losses at the walls by prescribing the wall temperatures from experimental data and Conjugated Heat Transfer (CHT) simulations, are conducted. Results with the enthalpy-dependent table are found to predict the time-averaged flow field in terms of velocity, major species, and temperature with higher accuracy than in the adiabatic case. Further, they indicate, that heat losses should be accounted for to correctly predict the flame position. Subsequently, the thermo-chemical state variations over the thermo-acoustic cycle for the enthalpy-dependant case are analyzed in detail and compared with experimental data in terms of phase-conditioned averaged profiles and conditional averages. An overall good prediction is observed, although an overestimation of the oscillation amplitude yields a slight over-prediction of the velocity field in the low-pressure phases. The results provide a detailed quantitative analysis of the thermo-acoustic feedback mechanism of this burner.

Die ungebrochen wachsende Nachfrage nach Bioprodukten in Deutschland zusammen mit einer nicht im gleichen Umfang stattfindenden Ausweitung der ökologischen Erzeugung von Rohwaren für die Futter- und Lebensmittelindustrie im Sektor machen Importe zunehmend wichtiger. Die Länder Mittel- und Osteuropas sind von ihrer Größe, ihrer geographischen und wirtschaftspolitischen Nähe sowie heutiger und künftiger Wirtschaftskraft wichtige Handelspartner für deutsche Bio-Unternehmen. Die nach wie vor bestehende Unkenntnis der Märkte und Strukturen sowie mangelndes Vertrauen aufgrund von Imageschäden wegen Unregelmäßigkeiten bezüglich Qualität und Herkunft von Bio-Waren erschweren insbesondere den Import aus Nicht-EU-Staaten der Region. Vorliegende Datensammlungen sind meist quantitativ (Anbauflächen, Produktmengen) und müssen aus verschiedenen Quellen recherchiert werden. Von den Unternehmen werden aktuelle, klar strukturierte Informationen zu Import- und Exportbestimmungen, Marktpartnern, Verbänden und Kontrollstellen mit Kontaktdaten gesucht. Diese Daten liegen in kompakter und gebündelter Form als Länderbericht so nicht vor. Bereits 2011 veröffentlichte EkoConnect Berichte zum Stand des Ökolandbaus in 14 Ländern Mittel- und Osteuropas (http://ekoconnect.org/de/14-L%C3%A4nder-Studie.html). Die Berichte umfassten die Entwicklung des Ökologischen Landbaus und des Bio-Marktes der jeweiligen Länder, Verarbeitung, Import / Export von Öko-Produkten, Akteure des Ökolandbaus mit Kontaktdaten. Durch die vertiefte Zusammenarbeit mit Mittel- und Osteuropa (EU-Assoziationsabkommen; bilaterale Handelsverträge; EU Beitritt Kroatien 1.07.2013) haben sich die politischen wie wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen Deutschlands zu diesen Ländern wie auch weiteren Ländern der Region seit 2011 weiterentwickelt. Ebenso hat sich die Bio-Branche in den einzelnen Ländern Mittel- und Osteuropas seit der Erstellung der Länderberichte 2011 erheblich weiterentwickelt und verändert. Neue Absatzmärkte für Bioprodukte in den MOE Staaten sind entstanden bzw. haben sich vergrößert, die Kaufkraft in den MOE Staaten ist gestiegen. Dadurch ergeben sich neue Möglichkeiten des Warenaustauschs in beide Richtungen. Mit einer Aktualisierung und Erweiterung der 2010/11 entstandenen 14 Länderberichte und der Aufnahme weiterer Länder soll dieser Entwicklung in Bezug auf den Bio-Sektor Rechnung getragen werden. 1.2 Ziele und Aufgabenstellung des Projekts Gesamtziel: Das Projekt dient der Beschreibung des Standes und der Entwicklung der mittel- und osteuropäischen Angebots- und Nachfragesituation von Bio-Produkten und deren Auswirkungen auf den deutschen Bio-Markt. Bezug zu förderpolitischen Zielen: Grundlage für eine Förderung ist die Richtlinie zur Förderung von Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhaben sowie von Maßnahmen zum Technologie- und Wissenstransfer im ökologischen Landbau. Das vorliegende Projekt leistet hier insbesondere zu den Punkten • 2.1.1 Übergreifende Themen – Weiterentwicklung von agrarischen Wissenstransfer- und Informationssystemen sowie • 2.1.6 Vermarktung ökologisch erzeugter Produkte und • 2.1.7 Wirtschaftliche und soziale Rahmenbedingungen bei der Erzeugung, Verarbeitung und Vermarktung – Markt- und Verbraucheranalysen einen wichtigen Beitrag. Projektziel: Ziel des Projektes ist es, eine aktuelle und detaillierte Übersicht über den Öko-Sektor in drei Ländern Mittel- und Osteuropas zu geben: Russland, Ukraine, Moldawien. Es soll • eine Verbesserung der Transparenz des Öko-Sektors in den Projektländern für Marktpartner aus Deutschland erreicht werden, • eine Handreichung zum besseren Marktzugang für Bio-Waren in beide Richtungen gegeben werden, • eine Stärkung von Produzenten, Verarbeitern und Händlern von Bio-Produkten und insbesondere von Erzeugergemeinschaften in den Projektländern unterstützt werden, • eine Stärkung der Position Deutschlands in der Kooperation und im Handel mit Bio-Produkten mit den Projektländern erreicht werden. Als Nebeneffekt werden die Entwicklung der ökologischen Landwirtschaft und damit die künftige Öko-Agrarproduktion für wichtige Produktbereiche besser abschätzbar.

Nach der Folketingswahl 2015 bildete in Dänemark zunächst die rechtsliberale Partei\ud Venstre allein die Regierung, die nach einem Jahr um Konservative und Liberale Allianz\ud erweitert wurde. Beide Konstellationen wurden von der Dänischen Volkspartei toleriert.\ud Das bürgerliche Lager wirkte jedoch aufgrund des ständigen Streits über die Steuerpolitik\ud in der Öffentlichkeit zerstritten und konnte somit weder von der guten Konjunktur im\ud Wahljahr noch von den umgesetzten Versprechen bei der Innen- und Zuwanderungspolitik\ud profitieren. Somit verlor es bei der Folketingswahl 2019 seine Mehrheit an den Block aus\ud Sozialdemokraten, Sozialliberalen, Sozialistischer Volkspartei und der Einheitsliste, der die\ud Wahl überraschend deutlich gewann. Die Sozialdemokraten hatten während der Wahlperiode\ud einen Kurswechsel zu einer dezidiert restriktiven Zuwanderungspolitik vollzogen und\ud ihr Abschneiden wurde europaweit mit Spannung erwartet, da sie in dieser Hinsicht als\ud mögliches Vorbild für andere Parteien galten, um traditionelle Stammwähler zurückzugewinnen.\ud Neue Ministerpräsidentin wurde die Sozialdemokratin Mette Frederiksen, die eine\ud Alleinregierung anführt. Diese wird von den anderen linken Parteien toleriert, die allerdings\ud eine fundamental andere Zuwanderungspolitik als die Sozialdemokraten verfolgen.\ud Somit hat die neue Regierungskonstellation eine Sollbruchstelle für die Wahlperiode 2019\ud bis 2023.

Selbstzündung ist ein komplexer Prozess, der in vielen technischen Systemen von großer Bedeutung ist. In Dieselmotoren und Motoren mit homogener Kompressionszündung wird die Verbrennung nicht durch eine externe Zündquelle wie eine Zündkerze, sondern durch Selbstzündung initiiert. In der Gasturbinenverbrennung kann Selbstzündung in Brennkammersystemen mit Rezirkulation zur Flammenstabilisierung beitragen, muss aber in Mischstrecken, z. B. bei der sequentiellen Verbrennung oder bei der mageren Vormischverbrennung, verhindert werden, um erhöhte Schadstoffemissionen sowie eine Beschädigung der Anlage zu vermeiden. Da Selbstzündung auf Zeitskalen im Millisekundenbereich abläuft, ist für experimentelle Untersuchungen eine hohe zeitliche Auflösung erforderlich. Aufgrund der experimentellen Komplexität der Untersuchung von Selbstzündung sind Teilprozesse wie die Entstehung von Zündkernen bislang nicht ausreichend untersucht. Für die Validierung von numerischen Simulationen sind zudem quantitative Messdaten mit gut definierten Randbedingungen notwendig. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es daher, quantitative laseroptische Messtechniken mit hoher zeitlicher Auflösung sowie passende Datenauswertungsalgorithmen zur Untersuchung von Selbstzündung zu entwickeln. Da Selbstzündung extrem sensitiv auf Randbedingungen wie Temperatur oder lokale Gemischzusammensetzung reagiert, wurde ein Versuchsträger mit gut definierten und reproduzierbaren Randbedingungen, der DLR Jet-in-Hot-Coflow Brenner, entwickelt. Hier wird kalter Brennstoff (Methan oder Propan) mit einer Temperatur von 300K in das heiße, sauerstoffhaltige Abgas einer mageren Wasserstoff-Luft-Flamme, die auf einer wassergekühlten Sintermetallmatrix stabilisiert wird, eingedüst. Die Coflowtemperatur wurde über einen großen Bereich zwischen etwa 1280K und 1800K variiert. Der Brennstoff konnte sowohl kontinuierlich zur Untersuchung stationärer Flammen als auch transient zur Untersuchung der Bildung von Zündkernen eingedüst werden. Während eines Forschungsaufenthaltes an der Ohio State University wurden Temperatur, Mischungsbruch und der quadrierte Gradient des Mischungsbruchs als Maß für die skalare Dissipationsrate mit planarer Rayleigh-Streuung bei einer Pulswiederholrate von 10 kHz bestimmt. Am DLR Stuttgart wurden detaillierte Messungen von planarer laserinduzierter Fluoreszenz (PLIF) an OH bei 10 kHz Pulswiederholrate und OH-Chemolumineszenz (CL) bei 20 kHz Bildrate für eine Vielzahl von Coflowtemperaturen, sowie Coflow- und Jetgeschwindigkeiten durchgeführt. Für OH PLIF wurde ein Ansatz zur Quantifizierung des Messsignals entwickelt. Zur Analyse der Flammenstabilisierung und zur Erstellung eines Validierungsdatensatzes für numerische Simulationen wurden Messungen mit kontinuierlicher Brennstoffzufuhr durchgeführt. Wahrscheinlichkeitsdichteverteilungen von Temperatur und OH-Konzentration zeigten, dass die Flammenstabilisierung teilweise durch Selbstzündung erfolgt. OH CL-Messungen zeigten die Bildung und das Wachstum von Zündkernen unterhalb der Flammenwurzel, bis diese schließlich mit der Flammenwurzel verschmolzen. Die Abhebehöhe der Jetflamme reagierte äußerst sensitiv auf die Coflowtemperatur, je nach Temperaturbereich konnte eine Änderung der Temperatur von 5% (entspricht 80 K) zu einer Verdoppelung der Abhebehöhe führen. Die Abhebehöhe skalierte nahezu linear mit der Jetgeschwindigkeit, ein Einfluss der Coflowgeschwindigkeit auf die Abhebehöhe wurde nicht festgestellt. Um Entstehung und Wachstum von Zündkernen zu untersuchen, wurden Versuche mit transienter Brennstoffzufuhr durchgeführt. Der zeitliche Verlauf der Mischungsbruchfelder während der Brennstoffeindüsung wurde charakterisiert und erwies sich als sehr reproduzierbar. Der Brennstoffjet ging in einen stationären Zustand über, bevor erste Zündkerne auftraten. Um die räumliche Lage von Zündkernen rekonstruieren und somit bei der Anwendung planarer Messtechniken Zündkerne identifizieren und detailliert untersuchen zu können, die innerhalb der Messebene entstehen, wurde OH CL aus zwei Blickrichtungen aufgenommen. Zündkerne bildeten sich stromauf von Ausbuchtungen des Brennstoffjets, also in Gebieten, in denen eine niedrige skalare Dissipationsrate und eine erhöhte Aufenthaltszeit durch Wirbel erwartet werden. Die Coflowtemperatur sowie die Coflow- und Jetgeschwindigkeit beeinflussten Zündzeitpunkt und -höhe deutlich, wobei die Coflowtemperatur den stärksten Einfluss hatte. Zur Unterstützung der Interpretation der Messergebnisse wurden im Rahmen einer Kooperation am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie 1D-Simulationen von zündenden Grenzschichten in einer Gegenstromanordnung bei den hier untersuchten Randbedingungen durchgeführt und der Einfluss von Streckung auf die Selbstzündung bewertet. Zündung trat dabei in sehr mageren Bereichen beim reaktivsten Mischungsbruch auf, anschließend wanderte die Reaktionszone hin zu stöchiometrischen Mischungen, bei denen die Flammengeschwindigkeit maximal ist. Mit planaren Rayleigh-Messungen wurden die Bedingungen am Ort der Zündung analysiert und statistisch ausgewertet. Zündkerne bildeten sich bei sehr mageren Mischungsbrüchen und in Gebieten mit niedriger skalarer Dissipationsrate. Das Zündkernwachstum bei verschiedenen axialen Positionen, d. h. Positionen mit unterschiedlicher mittlerer skalarer Dissipationsrate, zeigte, dass die skalare Dissipationsrate nicht nur den Zündzeitpunkt und -ort, sondern auch das Zündkernwachstum beeinflusst. Erstmals konnte mit hoher zeitlicher und räumlicher Auflösung die Entstehung von Zündkernen untersucht werden und daraus ein Bildungsmechanismus für Zündkerne abgeleitet werden. Weiterhin steht ein einzigartiger Datensatz zur Validierung von numerischen Simulationen zur Verfügung.

This policy note presents policy recommendations for a sustainable development strategy targeting the Ivorian and Ghanaian mango sectors. Based on a GVC and SWOT analysis, we conclude that the mango sectors in both countries yield significant potential for promoting socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable production and employment. To this end, in both countries, a stronger focus on industrial policies targeting the key challenges in the respective mango sector is however needed.

The European Union (EU) has recently concluded or is currently in the process of negotiating a number of bilateral free trade agreements with both industrialized countries, e.g. Canada and Japan, and developing as well as emerging economies. Negotiations with the latter group include inter alia the Mercosur countries, Vietnam, as well as the African countries of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group and Tunisia. Negotiations on the EU-Tunisia Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) were launched in 2015 and are still ongoing. Trade agreements between advanced and developing countries like those negotiated by the European Union and the ACP countries as well as with Tunisia, respectively, pose both opportunities and threats to the partner countries involved. While results from model-based economic impact assessments typically indicate that the macroeconomic effects of such agreements tend to be small, the long-term effects depend on the structural change triggered by the agreements. It is a well-known contention in the development economics literature that the marked differences in economic capacities and capabilities between advanced and developing economies pose particular problems that need to be dealt with, if longer-term impediments to late economic development are to be avoided. Thus, in this report, the focus is directed towards discussing the challenges of productive development as well as of export promotion in selected EU partner countries and export sectors in the context of trade liberalisation. To this end, four export sectors in three African countries are analysed, namely (i) the cocoa and mango sectors in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, and (ii) the olive oil and the textile and apparel sectors in Tunisia. With the exception of the mango sector, the other sectors - cocoa, olive oil and textile and apparel - are well-established sectors in the respective countries. Attempts to functionally upgrade into processing for the agriculture-based cocoa and olive oil sectors are however recent, while important consolidation processes have been under way in the context of increased global competition and political instability in the context of the Arab Spring in the textile and apparel sector in Tunisia. Mango exports have only recently become a thriving export sector in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana and have profited from strong demand growth in advanced and increasingly also emerging countries. All sector case studies are located in African countries, which figure among the prioritized partner countries for EU development cooperation. For each scrutinized sector, key policy recommendations for upgrading and diversification into higher value-added products are proposed. Final report, 12 July 2018

First published: 26 August 2015 This article focuses on the role of plant size for working class vote.We argue that workplace size does matter for political behaviour. Workers in smaller plants are less unionized and therefore base their voting decisions more strongly on their cultural attitudes, which undermine the support for social democratic parties. Using data from the European Social Survey (2002–2010), we find that workers in small plants have more right-wing attitudes and, consequently, vote for new and old right parties, contrarily to workers in larger plants. Our research points towards important structural explanations of working class support for the right and its cross-national differences.

Issue evolution is a well-established theoretical perspective in the analysis of long-term party competition and partisanship in the US. However, this perspective has rarely been used to analyze political elite effects on partisan polarization in European multiparty systems. Consequently, I apply the issue evolution perspective to polarization in a European multiparty system. I find an emergence of cultural issues in Denmark, where mass level polarization on cultural issues followed elite level polarization. Unlike two-party systems, niche parties drive issue evolution on the elite level, which is then followed by niche partisan polarization and, finally, mainstream party adaption. The findings illustrate the mechanisms of issue evolution in a European-style multiparty system and the role of niche parties.

Background: Pulmonary Vein Isolation (PVI) is evolving as an established treatment option in atrial fibrillation (AF). Different fluoroscopy-guided ablation devices exist either on the basis of expandable circumferential and mesh designs with mapping and ablation of pulmonary vein potentials, or of a balloon technology, a “single shot” device with a purely anatomical approach. Systematic comparisons between procedure duration (PD), fluoroscopy time (FT) and clinical outcome in using different ablation tools are lacking in the literature.Methods: In a single center retrospective analysis, 119 PVI procedures were performed between August 2008 and March 2011 in paroxysmal AF (PAF, 59.7%) and persistent AF (persAF, 40.3%) patients with mean age of 59.4±10.3 years and history of AF since 8.1±9.7 months. The PVI procedures were evaluated by comparing PD and FT using I) the High Density Mesh Mapper (HDMM), II) the High Density Mesh Ablator (HDMA), and III) the Arctic Front® Cryoballoon. The primary endpoints were FT and PD, the secondary endpoint was procedural safety and efficacy in short- and longterm follow-up.Results: The procedures performed for 119 patients (63.0 % male) included 42 PVIs with the HDMM (35.3 %), 47 with the HDMA (39.5 %) and 30 with the cryoballoon (25.2 %). Comparing the 30 first procedures in groups of 10 in the HDMM and HDMA group, PD and FT fell in the HDMM group (PD from 257.5 to 220.9 min and FT from 80.5 to 67.3 min, both p < 0.05) as well as in the HDMA group (PD from 182.9 to 147.2 min and FT from 41.02 to 29.1 min, both p < 0.05). In the cryoballoon group, there was a steep learning curve with a steady state after the first 10 procedures (PD and FT decreased significantly from 189.5 to 138.1 min and 36.9 to 27.3 min, p values 0.005 and 0.05 respectively). With respect to recurrence of AF in a 24 months follow up, the HDMM and cryoballoon group showed comparable results with ~72% of patients free of arrhythmias. None of the patients died due to severe complications, or suffered a hemodynamic relevant pericardial effusion and/or stroke. Impairment of the phrenic nerve was observed in three patients.Conclusion: Use of the cryoballoon technology was associated with a steep learning curve and a reduced PD and FT; the long-term outcome was similar compared with the HDMM group. The efficacy and safety of the devices but also PD and FT should be respected as the strongest indicators of the quality of ablation. Further studies with long time follow-ups will show if the time for correct mapping of the PV potentials is a price we should be willing to pay or if we should adopt a “wait-and-see” attitude referring the AF recurrence.

This article investigates to what extent social democratic parties still benefit from the support of union members at the polls. Not only are social democratic parties confronted with new competitors in the party systems, but also the union confederations of the socialist labour movement are in some countries losing their dominant position due to the rise of separate professional confederations. It is argued in the article that the effect of union membership on voting choice is conditioned by the structure of the trade union movement. The support of union members for social democracy is fostered by the strength of the confederations historically close to this party family, while it is hampered when strong separate (or politically unaffiliated) white-collar confederations exist. Using European Social Survey and Swedish Public Opinion data, the article shows that social democratic parties still enjoy important support from trade union members, but at the same time are under fierce competition from bourgeois and green parties among members of white-collar confederations. This reinforces the challenges for social democracy to build new voters’ coalitions in post-industrial societies.

Aims: Phrenic nerve palsy (PNP) is still a cause for concern in Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) procedures. New surveillance techniques, such as invasive registration of the compound motor action potential (CMAP), have been thought to prevent the occurrence of PNP. The present study investigates the impact of CMAP surveillance via an alternative and non-invasive ECG-conduction technique during CBA. Methods: PVI with CBA was performed in 166 patients suffering from AF. Diaphragmal contraction was monitored by abdominal hands-on observation in Observation Group I; Observation Group II was treated using additional ECG-conduction, as a means of modified CMAP surveillance method. During the ablation of the right superior and inferior pulmonary veins, the upper extremities lead I was newly adjusted between the inferior sternum and the right chest, thereby recording the maximum CMAP. The CMAP in the above-mentioned ECG leads was continuously observed in a semi-quantitative manner. Results: PNP was observed in 10 (6%) patients in total.
