Unextendible product bases (UPBs) play a key role in the study of quantum entanglement and nonlocality. A famous open question is whether there exist genuinely unextendible product bases (GUPBs), namely multipartite product bases that are unextendible with respect to every possible bipartition. Here we shed light on this question by providing a characterization of UPBs and GUPBs in terms of orthogonality graphs. Building on this connection, we develop a method for constructing UPBs in low dimensions, and we derive a lower bound on the size of any GUPB, significantly improving over the state of the art. Moreover, we show that every minimal GUPB saturating our bound must be associated to regular graphs. Finally, we discuss a possible path towards the construction of a minimal GUPB in a tripartite system of minimal local dimension.

The bHLH transcription factors play pivotal roles in plant growth and development, production of secondary metabolites and responses to various environmental stresses. Although the bHLH genes have been well studied in model plant species, a comprehensive investigation of the bHLH genes is required for tobacco with newly obtained high-quality genome. In the present study, a total of 309 NtbHLH genes were identified and can be divided into 23 subfamilies. The conserved amino acids which are essential for their function were predicted for the NtbHLH proteins. Moreover, the NtbHLH genes were conserved during evolution through analyzing the gene structures and conserved motifs. A total of 265 NtbHLH genes were localized in the 24 tobacco chromosomes while the remained 44 NtbHLH genes were mapped to the scaffolds due to the complexity of tobacco genome. Moreover, transcripts of NtbHLH genes were obviously tissue-specific expressed from the gene-chip data from 23 tobacco tissues, and expressions of 20 random selected NtbHLH genes were further confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR, indicating their potential functions in the plant growth and development. Importantly, overexpressed NtbHLH86 gene confers improve drought tolerance in tobacco indicating that it might be involved in the regulation of drought stress. Therefore, our findings here provide a valuable information on the characterization of NtbHLH genes and further investigation of their functions in tobacco.

One of the most general patterns in ecology is the positive relationship between environmental heterogeneity and local diversity. On the one hand, increased resource heterogeneity provides more resources for diverse consumers in the community. On the other hand, increased structural heterogeneity creates variation in the environment's physical structure, thus allowing the coexistence of diverse species with different environmental requirements. Here, we examined the relative importance of resource and structural heterogeneity in determining the taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity of nut-nesting ants in natural rainforest and rubber plantation. The species richness of nut-nesting ants was 70% higher in rainforest than in rubber plantation. The clustered functional and phylogenetic structure in rubber plantation suggested a strong effect of environmental filtering in shaping ant functional and phylogenetic structure. Nesting heterogeneity (nut diversity) was the major factor explaining variation in taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity, suggesting that resource heterogeneity plays a major role in shaping the biodiversity patterns of nut-nesting ants. Overall, these results indicate that decreased resource diversity following the conversion of rainforest to rubber plantation can drive biodiversity loss in nut-nesting ants, through its effect on reducing both ant species, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. The decline in species richness and functional and phylogenetic diversity in the local ant community might have major effects on ecosystem functioning.

Our previous work have shown that certain subpopulations of Klebsiella pneumoniae exhibit significant phenotypic changes under simulated microgravity (SMG), including enhanced biofilm formation and cellulose synthesis, which may be evoked by changes in gene expression patterns. It is well known that prokaryotic cells genomic DNA can be hierarchically organized into different higher-order three-dimensional structures, which can highly influence gene expression. It is remain elusive whether phenotypic changes induced by SMG in the subpopulations of K. pneumoniae are driven by genome higher-order structural changes. Here, we investigated the above-mentioned issue using the wild-type (WT) K. pneumoniae (WT was used as a control strain and continuously cultivated for 2 weeks under standard culture conditions of normal gravity) and two previous identified subpopulations (M1 and M2) obtained after 2 weeks of continuous incubation in a SMG device. By the combination of genome-wide chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C), RNA-seq and whole-genome methylation (WGS) analyses, we found that the along with the global chromosome interactions change, the compacting extent of M1, M2 subpopulations were much looser under SMG and even with an increase in active, open chromosome regions. In addition, transcriptome data showed that most differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were upregulated, whereas a few DEGs were downregulated in M1 and M2. The functions of both types DEGs were mainly associated with membrane fractions. Additionally, WGS analysis revealed that methylation levels were lower in M1 and M2. Using combined analysis of multi-omics data, we discovered that most upregulated DEGs were significantly enriched in the boundary regions of the variable chromosomal interaction domains (CIDs), in which genes regulating biofilm formation were mainly located. These results suggest that K. pneumoniae may regulate gene expression patterns through DNA methylation and changes in genome structure, thus resulting in new phenotypes in response to altered gravity.

This paper presents a novel spread spectrum (SS) method with a pseudo-natural sampling technique for filterless digital class-D audio amplifiers. This method is proposed to reduce the electromagnetic interference (EMI) emissions of amplifiers by lowering the output out-of-band spectral amplitudes around the pulse width modulator carrier frequency and its multiples. The main idea of this method is that the sampling frequency of the modulating signal and the carrier frequency are varied synchronously and randomly among three different values. Since the carrier frequency is variable, the polynomial interpolation Newton–Raphson (PI-NR) algorithm is modified to correct the harmonic distortion caused by uniform-sampling pulse width modulation (UPWM). Based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA), an experimental system is established to analyze the performances of the proposed method and other six reported SS methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method features the lowest total harmonic distortion (THD) of 0.009% with a 6.6 kHz, 0 dBFS (full scale) input, a relatively high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 52.68 dB and a relatively high output out-of-band peak spectral amplitude reduction of 17.75 dB.

Cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines are valuable resources in plant breeding for heterosis utilization, guaranteeing quality of hybrid seeds, and genetic integrity. Nta(sua)S K326, which contains the nuclei of Nicotiana tabacum cv. K326 and cytoplasm of N. suaveolens, is currently the dominant CMS source used in tobacco leaf production in Yunnan, China. Therefore, the alternative CMS lines are required. Here, the Nta(gla)S K326 with cytoplasm of N. glauca has been generated from asymmetric somatic hybridization between protoplasts of K326 and N. glauca followed by backcrossing with K326. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that Nta(gla)S has almost identical ploidy level as that in K326. Moreover, Nta(gla)S, Nta(sua)S, and K326 plants showed similar relative growth rate, yield, and contents of several chemical components in the field. Further scaning electron microscopic observation of floral organs revealed that the Nta(gla)S has shortened filaments and shrivelled stamens, whereas the Nta(sua)S has severe degenerated and carpel-liked stamens, compared with fertile K326 plants. In addition, the expression patterns of several mitochondrial genes in Nta(gla)S, Nta(sua)S, and K326 plants were compared. Furthermore, the cytoplasm source of Nta(gla)S and Nta(sua)S could be distinguished by cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) analysis with chloroplast-specific universal primers. Taken together, these results showed the development of a Nicotiana CMS hybrid via asymmetric somatic hybridization, suggesting that flow cytometry analysis at early stage could facilitate and accelerate the selection process of generating CMS lines. Importantly, the Nta(gla)S provides a valuable germplasm as an alternative CMS line instead of Nta(sua)S in Nicotiana hybrid breeding. Most mutualisms are exploited by parasites, which must strike an evolutionary balance between virulence and long‐term persistence. Fig‐associated nematodes, living inside figs and dispersed by fig wasps, are thought to be exploiters of the fig–fig wasp mutualism. The life history of nematodes is synchronized with the fig development and adapted to particular developmental characteristics of figs. We expect host breeding systems (monoecious vs. gynodioecious figs) and seasonality to be central to this adaptation. However, the details of the adaptation are largely unknown. Here, we conducted the first field surveys on the prevalence of nematodes from monoecious Ficus microcarpa L.f. (Moraceae), gynodioecious Ficus hispida L.f., and their pollinating fig wasps in two seasons and two developmental stages of figs in Xishuangbanna, China. We followed this up by quantifying the effects of nematodes on fitness‐related traits on fig wasps (e.g., egg loads, pollen grains, and longevity) and fig trees (seed production) in gynodioecious F. hispida. The magnitude of nematode infection was compared between pre‐ and post‐dispersal pollinators to quantify the probability of nematodes being transported to new hosts. Our results showed that Ficophagus microcarpus (Nematoda: Aphelenchoididae) was the only nematode in F. microcarpa. In F. hispida, Martininema guangzhouensis (Nematoda: Aphelenchoididae) was the dominant nematode species, whereas Ficophagus centerae was rare. For both species of Ficus, rainy season and inter‐floral figs had higher rates of nematode infection than the dry‐hot season and receptive figs. Nematodes did not affect the number of pollen grains or egg loads of female wasps. We did not detect a correlation between seed production and nematode infection. However, carrying nematodes reduced the lifespan and dispersal ability of pollinator wasps, indicating higher rates of post‐emergence mortality in infected fig wasps. Severely infected fig wasps were likely ‘filtered out’, preventing the overexploitation of figs by wasps and stabilizing the interaction over evolutionary time.

Organisms exist within ecological networks, connected through interactions such as parasitism, predation and mutualism which can modify their abundance and distribution within habitat patches. Differential species responses make it hard to predict the influence of climate change at the community scale. Understanding the interplay between climate and biotic interactions can improve our predictions of how ecosystems will respond to current global warming. We aim to understand how climate affects the multitrophic biotic interactions as well as the community structure using the enclosed communities of wasps associated with figs as study system. To examine the presence and strength of multitrophic species interactions, we first characterized the multitrophic community of fig wasps associated with Ficus racemosa and then applied hierarchical joint species distribution models, fitted to community monitoring data. We further evaluated the effect of climate on individual species trends as well as interspecific interactions. We found that the competitive balance shifted to favour non-pollinating galling wasps and disadvantage the dominant pollinator in suboptimal conditions. Furthermore, suboptimal conditions for galling wasps facilitated the occurrence of their specialized parasitoid, as changes cascaded across trophic levels and led to alternative community structures. Our results highlight the role of how species interactions can be modified across multiple trophic levels in a fig wasp community according to climate.生态系统中的各类生物通过寄生、捕食、互惠等相互作用组成生态网络，并相互影响与制约。由于不同物种外界变化的响应存在差异，在群落水平上预测气候变化对生物的影响一直是个难点。了解气候与物种间相互作用怎样共同作用于群落中的物种，有助于完善生态系统如何响应当前气候变暖的预测。 在该研究中，我们选用榕小蜂群落作为研究系统，目标揭示气候怎样影响多营养级生物互作体及其群落结构。 我们首先通过应用层级联合物种分布模型 (Hierarchical joint species distribution models) 分析了群落监测数据，检测了聚果榕多营养级榕小蜂群落多种种间互作的关系与强度。再进一步评估气候对单个物种动态及种间互作的影响。 研究发现:当处于非最佳气候条件时，同一营养级之间的种间竞争更倾向于非优势的非传粉造瘿小蜂，对优势的传粉榕小蜂不利；而且同一营养级之间竞争平衡的倾斜，通过跨营养级的级联效应促进了非传粉造瘿小蜂专性复寄生蜂的发生，从而导致群落结构的改变。结果强调了气候通过级联效应影响种间的不同互作关系，最终影响多营养级的榕小蜂群落。.

Theory identifies factors that can undermine the evolutionary stability of mutualisms. However, theory’s relevance to mutualism stability in nature is controversial. Detailed comparative studies of parasitic species that are embedded within otherwise mutualistic taxa (e.g., fig pollinator wasps) can identify factors that potentially promote or undermine mutualism stability. We describe results from behavioral, morphological, phylogenetic, and experimental studies of two functionally distinct, but closely related, Eupristina wasp species associated with the monoecious host fig, Ficus microcarpa, in Yunnan Province, China. One (Eupristina verticillata) is a competent pollinator exhibiting morphologies and behaviors consistent with observed seed production. The other (Eupristina sp.) lacks these traits, and dramatically reduces both female and male reproductive success of its host. Furthermore, observations and experiments indicate that individuals of this parasitic species exhibit greater relative fitness than the pollinators, in both indirect competition (individual wasps in separate fig inflorescences) and direct competition (wasps of both species within the same fig). Moreover, phylogenetic analyses suggest that these two Eupristina species are sister taxa. By the strictest definition, the nonpollinating species represents a “cheater” that has descended from a beneficial pollinating mutualist. In sharp contrast to all 15 existing studies of actively pollinated figs and their wasps, the local F. microcarpa exhibit no evidence for host sanctions that effectively reduce the relative fitness of wasps that do not pollinate. We suggest that the lack of sanctions in the local hosts promotes the loss of specialized morphologies and behaviors crucial for pollination and, thereby, the evolution of cheating.

Nicotine is one of the most important secondary metabolites in tobacco, and its biosynthesis can be induced by topping and jasmonic acid treatment. NtMYC2s play pivotal roles in the regulation of nicotine. The mediator server as a bridge betwen the transcription factors and RNA polymerase in order to facilitates transcription and functions in plants. However, the role of mediator in the regulation of nicotine biosynthesis remains unknown. In this study, we firstly identify the NtMED25 through homologous analysis. NtMED25 interacts with NtMYC2s through the MD region. Interestingly, the nicotine content is decreased in the the knock-down transgenic lines of NtMED25, and the expression levels of two nicotine biosynthesis genes, NtQPT2 and NtPMT2, are also reduced when compared with that in the wild-type plants. Furthermore, NtMED25 enhances the binding of NtMYC2a/ NtMYC2b to the promoter of NtPMT2 and NtQPT2, and then facilitates the nicotine biosynthesis. Therefore, our study revealed the function of mediator in the regulation of nicotine, and provide the insight role on the transcriptional regulation of plant secondary metabolites.

Filterless digital class D power amplifiers usually utilize three-level uniform sampling pulse width modulation (UPWM) technique to convert the digital input signal into a UPWM signal which is used to drive the power stage. Therefore, the spectral estimation expressions for different three-level UPWM signals obtained by modulating the digital signal can be an evaluation tool for signal distortion and electromagnetic interference when filterless digital class D power amplifiers are designed. Based on the time-domain characteristics of three-level UPWM signals, the spectral estimation expressions for six types of three-level UPWM signals are proposed in this paper by using the discrete Fourier transform technique and the frequency response of the zero-order holder. According to these expressions, the relationships among the total harmonic distortion, the pulse repetition frequency and the pulse width resolution of the UPWM signal are studied. A UPWM generator test system based on field-programmable gate array is designed and implemented to measure the spectra of different UPWM signals. The measured results are compared with the calculated results obtained by the proposed expressions to verify the correctness of the proposed expressions.

Background Abscisic acid (ABA) is an important phytohormone for plant growth, development and responding to stresses such as drought, salinity, and pathogen infection. Pyrabactin Resistance 1 (PYR1)/PYR1-Like (PYL)/Regulatory Component of ABA Receptor (RCAR) (hereafter referred to as PYLs) has been identified as the ABA receptors. The PYL family members have been well studied in many plants. However, the members of PYL family have not been systematically identified at genome level in cultivated tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and its two ancestors. In this study, the phylogenic relationships, chromosomal distribution, gene structures, conserved motifs/regions, and expression profiles of NtPYLs were analyzed. Results We identified 29, 11, 16 PYLs in the genomes of allotetraploid N. tabacum, and its two diploid ancestors N. tomentosiformis and N. sylvestris, respectively. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that NtPYLs can be divided into three subfamilies, and each NtPYL has one counterpart in N. sylvestris or N. tomentosiformis. Based on microarray analysis of NtPYL transcripts, four NtPYLs (from subfamily II, III), and five NtPYLs (from subfamily I) are highlighted as potential candidates for further functional characterization in N. tabacum seed development, response to ABA, and germination, and resistance to abiotic stresses, respectively. Interestingly, the expression profiles of members in the same NtPYL subfamily showed somehow similar patterns in tissues at different developmental stages and in leaves of seedlings under drought stress, suggesting particular NtPYLs might have multiple functions in both plant development and drought stress response. Conclusions NtPYLs are highlighted for important functions in seed development, germination and response to ABA, and particular in drought tolerance. This work will not only shed light on the PYL family in tobacco, but also provides some valuable information for functional characterization of ABA receptors in N. tabacum. 1. Species interactions in tightly bound ecological mutualisms often feature highly specialised species' roles in which competitive exclusion may preclude multi‐species coexistence. Among the 800 fig (Ficus) species, it was originally considered that each was pollinated by their own wasp (Agaonidae). However, recent investigations show that this ‘one‐to‐one’ rule often breaks down, as fig species regularly host multiple agaonids but in ways suggesting that competitive processes still mediate biodiversity outcomes. 2. A phenological survey was conducted of the fig–fig wasp pair, Ficus microcarpa and its associated pollinating wasp, alongside its sister species, the cheating wasp, in Xishuangbanna, China. 3. Reproductive output underwent extreme seasonal variation. Seed and pollinator production fell markedly during cooler, drier months, although high levels of fig production continued. However, this resource was predominantly utilised by the cheater species, which offers no pollination services. Pollinators and cheaters rarely co‐occur, suggesting that temporal coexistence is constrained by competition for access to figs. 4. The overall findings indicate periodic rearrangements of mutualism dynamics, probably resulting from a strongly seasonal environment. Sympatric co‐occurrence may result from a window of opportunity for a functionally divergent agaonid, potentially due to constraints on the main pollinator in adapting to variable year‐round conditions that prevent competitive exclusion.

The inconsistency among the battery cells for electric vehicle affects the performance and life expectancy of the batteries. A mixed optimal control scheme based on capacity balance and voltage balance is proposed. The scheme gives priority to capacity balance, as well as combines with the voltage balance, which makes full use of the advantages of these schemes. In addition, through the practical experiment, especially for lithium iron phosphate battery, it is proved that this strategy achieved higher efficiency and better effect than the traditional balance scheme- voltage equilibrium. This strategy can greatly improve the inconsistency among the battery cells and boost the battery capacity.

Centrosomal protein FOR20 has been reported to be crucial for essential cellular processes, including ciliogenesis, cell migration, and cell cycle in vertebrates. However, the function of FOR20 during mammalian embryonic development remains unknown. To investigate the in vivo function of the For20 gene in mammals, we generated For20 homozygous knockout mice by gene targeting. Our data reveal that homozygous knockout of For20 results in significant embryonic growth arrest and lethality during gestation, while the heterozygotes show no obvious defects. The absence of For20 leads to impaired left-right patterning of embryos and reduced cilia in the embryonic node. Deletion of For20 also disrupts angiogenesis in yolk sacs and embryos. These results highlight a critical role of For20 in early mammalian embryogenesis.

The biosynthesis of flavonols and anthocyanins is precisely regulated by different transcription factors in plants. WRKY11 promotes the biosynthesis of flavonoids in apple, but the molecular mechanism of WRKY11 regulating flavonols biosynthesis, and whether WRKY11 plays the same roles in other plants species remains to be further studied. Here, we cloned four NtWRKY11 genes from tobacco, which all contained the conserved WRKYGQK heptapeptide and a zinc-finger motif. The NtWRKY11b showed higher expression levels than the other NtWRKY11 genes in all the tobacco tissues examined, especially in tobacco leaves. Silencing of NtWRKY11b in tobacco leaves reduced the content of flavonols to 45.2 %-69.8 % of that in the WT plants, but overexpression of NtWRKY11b increased the flavonols content by 37.8 %-80.7 %. Transcriptome analysis revealed 8 flavonoids related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between NtWRKY11b-OE and WT plants, among which the transcription of NtMYB12, NtFLS, NtGT5, and NtUFGT was significantly induced by posttranslational activation of NtWRKY11b with the presence of protein synthesis inhibitor, indicating a putative direct promotion of NtWRKY11b on the transcription of these flavonoids related genes. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assays further demonstrated that NtWRKY11b could bind to the promoter regions of NtMYB12, NtFLS, NtGT5, and NtUFGT to activate the transcription of these genes. Moreover, ectopic expression of NtWRKY11b also promoted the expression levels of NtCML38, NtCTL1, NtWRKY44, and NtCML37 genes, which have been shown to enhance plant resistance to various stresses. Our findings revealed the molecular mechanism of NtWRKY11b regulating flavonols biosynthesis, and provided a promising target for increasing flavonols content in tobacco.

This paper aims to investigate optimal formation solutions of multiple biomimetic underwater vehicles (BUVs). The BUV is propelled by undulatory fins on both sides, and can perform various locomotion patterns, especially turning in situ and diving vertically. Firstly, the optimal formation problem is formulated, followed by theoretical analysis of a special case of optimal line formation. Then, a solution is proposed from the perspective of evolutionary computation. In particularly, the coordinates and the slope of the desired line formation, together with the pairings between initial positions and target positions, are obtained based on particle swarm optimization. Furthermore, we demonstrate the validity of this method by comparing the simulation results with the results of theoretical analysis. Finally, simulations results of multiple BUVs verify the feasibility of the proposed optimal formation methods.

Human-induced habitat conversion and degradation, along with accelerating climatic change, have resulted in considerable global biodiversity loss. Nevertheless, how local ecological assemblages respond to the interplay between climate and land-use change remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the effects of climate and land-use interactions on butterfly diversity in different ecosystems of southwestern China. Specifically, we investigated variation in the alpha and beta diversities of butterflies in different landscapes along human-modified and climate gradients. We found that increasing land-use intensity not only caused a dramatic decrease in butterfly alpha diversity but also significantly simplified butterfly species composition in tropical rainforest and savanna ecosystems. These findings suggest that habitat modification by agricultural activities increases the importance of deterministic processes and leads to biotic homogenization. The land-use intensity model best explained species richness variation in the tropical rainforest, whereas the climate and land-use intensity interaction model best explained species richness variation in the savanna. These results indicate that climate modulates the effects of land-use intensity on butterfly alpha diversity in the savanna ecosystem. We also found that the response of species composition to climate varied between sites: specifically, species composition was strongly correlated with climatic distance in the tropical rainforest but not in the savanna. Taken together, our long-term butterfly monitoring data reveal that interactions between human-modified habitat change and climate change have shaped butterfly diversity in tropical rainforest and savanna. These findings also have important implications for biodiversity conservation under the current era of rapid human-induced habitat loss and climate change.

Ciprofloxacin, a third-generation fluoroquinolones (FQs) antibiotic, is observed to increasingly pollute the environment. In this study, a three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide-attapulgite-based catalyst Fe2O3/RGO-ATP was prepared and used to analyze the degradation of ciprofloxacin in a heterogeneous Fenton reaction. The heterogeneous catalyst Fe2O3/RGO-ATP was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method, and the samples were characterized using BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effect of reaction time, temperature, pH, initial concentration, H2O2 dosage and reuse time on the degradation of ciprofloxacin by the catalyst Fe2O3/RGO-ATP was investigated. The optimum conditions of degradation of ciprofloxacin are observed to be 60 &deg, C, pH 5, H2O2 concentration of 2.9724 mmol/L, and initial ciprofloxacin concentration of 50 mg/L. The catalyst could be reused several times with a decline in catalytic capacity. Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT) was also employed to study the degradation products of ciprofloxacin in the aqueous solution. The results show that the heterogeneous catalyst Fe2O3/RGO-ATP possessed an excellent ability for the catalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin. Direct hydroxyl oxidation is noted to be the main pathway of degradation of ciprofloxacin, and no defluorination reaction is observed during the degradation process.

Given black-box access to the input and output systems, we develop the first efficient quantum causal order discovery algorithm with polynomial query complexity with respect to the number of systems. We model the causal order with quantum combs, and our algorithms output the order of inputs and outputs that the given process is compatible with. Our algorithm searches for the last input and the last output in the causal order, removes them, and iteratively repeats the above procedure until we get the order of all inputs and outputs. Our method guarantees a polynomial running time for quantum combs with a low Kraus rank, namely processes with low noise and little information loss. For special cases where the causal order can be inferred from local observations, we also propose algorithms that have lower query complexity and only require local state preparation and local measurements. Our algorithms will provide efficient ways to detect and optimize available transmission paths in quantum communication networks, as well as methods to verify quantum circuits and to discover the latent structure of multipartite quantum systems., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. MADS-box genes play a pivotal role in various processes, including floral and seed development, controlling flowering time, regulation of fruits ripening, and respond to abiotic and biotic stressors in planta. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) has been widely used as a model plant for analyzing the gene function, however, there has been less information on the regulation of flowering, and the associated genes. In the present study, a total of 168 NtMADS-box genes were identified from tobacco, and their phylogenetic relationship, chromosome locations, and gene structures were further analyzed. NtMADS-box genes can be clustered into four sub-families of M&alpha, M&gamma, MIKC*, and MIKCC. A total of 111 NtMADS-box genes were distributed on 20 chromosomes, and 57 NtMADS-box genes were located on the unanchored scaffolds due to the complex and incomplete assembly of the tobacco genome. Expression profiles of NtMADS-box genes by microarray from 23 different tissues indicated that members in different NtMADS-box gene subfamilies might play specific roles in the growth and flower development, and the transcript levels of 24 NtMADS-box genes were confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR. Importantly, overexpressed NtSOC1/NtMADS133 could promote early flowering and dwarfism in transgenic tobacco plants. Therefore, our findings provide insights on the characterization of NtMADS-box genes to further study their functions in plant development.

Peripheral neurogenic tumors can be featured by entering-and-exiting-nerve sign,which,however,is rarely seen in patients with spinal schwannoma. In this article we report a spinal schwannoma case with entering-and-exiting-nerve sign.

Community health centres (CHCs) are the health gatekeepers of the local population. Location and numbers of the CHCs affect fairness and effectiveness with regard to access to primary health care. In the past, the distribution of the CHCs was solely empiric-based. The goal of this study was to devise a method for CHC distribution based on the principle of improving equity as well as ensuring efficiency. We tested the effectiveness and operability of the method through a process of revision and simulation using Guangdong Province, China as sample district. A methodology based on literature review and expert consultation was repeatedly applied until an ideal result had been reached. A hexagonal, mesh-based method was developed and used to find a solution where the CHCs could be distributed where their location would be the most needed and total number suitable. Testing the effectiveness of the proposed plan, we found the proportion of area covered to be 52.8% and the proportion of the population covered 80.7%, which is 15.4% and 14.7%, respectively, better than before. It was concluded that the hexagonal mesh-based, distribution method can effectively define the location as well as the number or required CHCs, not only improving the accessibility for residents to primary health care services but also maximizing cost-effectiveness. Management of the city by grid is a new idea in urban management, which improves rationality of planning and also may be applied for many different purposes in addition to CHC localization.

China has abundant reserves of magnesite, making it the world's leading source of this strategic mineral. Sparry magnesite is the main type of magnesite deposit, and is easy to exploit. It occurs mainly as the sedimentary-metamorphic type. Production is centred on eastern Liaoning Province, where a world-class large to super large magnesite ore processing and production facility has been developed. Hydrothermal metasomatic deposits, associated with ultramafic complexes and eluvial deposits produced by weathering, are two other important types found in China. The Western section of the Bangonghu-Nujiang metallogenic belt is an important target region for prospecting lake-sedimentary magnesite deposits. Based on a systematic analysis of material from 62 magnesite production areas, this study investigated the metallogeny of magnesite and delineated 13 magnesite metallogenic belts. Maps were produced showing metallogenic regularities in magnesite deposits, the metallogenic system of the magnesite deposits, and the distribution of the metallogenic belts of Chinese magnesite deposits. It provides a theoretical basis for forecasting the location of potential magnesite resources in China. Finally, it explores some key scientific issues, including the formation processes of ultra magnesite ore-concentrated areas, and their sources of magnesium.

This paper investigated the effects of pear jam with different calcium salt, calcium chloride, calcium acetate and calcium lactate on the properties of jam. The rheological, physicochemical and electronic nose of jam were studied. The results showed that every calcium salts added could change in the rheology of the jam. The rheology viscosity order in jam was calcium chloride > calcium acetate > calcium lactate. Also, the differences in the soluble solids, VC, color and odors were observed among the jam samples in the experiment. The addition of calcium salts made the content of soluble solids and VC increased, titratable acidity, color and odors couid be retained. The use of calcium salt improved quality of pear jam. They would improve consumer acceptance.

An effective method for Agrobacterium tumefaciens inhibition using silica nanoparticles (NPs) as the carrier and melittin as the antibacterial drug is developed. The diameters of the inhibition zones of A. tumefaciens treated with different concentrations of melittin-conjugated silica NPs, pure silica NPs, gentamicin and free melittin are determined. The results indicate that the pure silica NPs have no impact on A. tumefaciens. The melittin-conjugated silica NPs have strong antibacterial activity against A. tumefaciens. In addition, the antibacterial activity of the melittin-conjugated silica NPs is dose dependent. The diameter of the inhibition zone caused by the melittin-conjugated silica NPs is almost the same as the positive control. Compared with the free drug molecules, silica NPs as an ideal carrier can gather a large number of drug molecules on their surface so as to greatly enhance the antibacterial activity.

Sludge Concentration (MLSS) is one of major parameters for operation of Anoxic/Aerobic-Membrane Bioreactors（A/O-MBR）and it influences the removal efficiency of pollutants and the rate of membrane fouling as well. This paper focuses on the effects of different MLSS on the treatment of domestic wastewater, the quantity and composition of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), and the variation of the rate of membrane fouling. It also includes a preliminary analysis of the correlation between EPS and membrane fouling to provide reference for future studies of the mechanism of membrane fouling.

The mechanism by which dominantly inherited mutations in the housekeeping gene GARS, which encodes glycyl-tRNA synthetase (GlyRS), mediate selective peripheral nerve toxicity resulting in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2D (CMT2D) is still largely unresolved. The transmembrane receptor protein neuropilin 1 (Nrp1) was recently identified as an aberrant extracellular binding partner of mutant GlyRS. Formation of the Nrp1/mutant GlyRS complex antagonises Nrp1 interaction with one of its main natural ligands, vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), contributing to neurodegeneration. However, reduced extracellular binding of VEGF-A to Nrp1 is known to disrupt post-natal blood vessel development and growth. We therefore analysed the vascular system at early and late symptomatic time points in CMT2D mouse muscles, retina, and sciatic nerve, as well as in embryonic hindbrain. Mutant tissues show no difference in blood vessel diameter, density/growth, and branching from embryonic development to three months, spanning the duration over which numerous sensory and neuromuscular phenotypes manifest. Our findings indicate that mutant GlyRS-mediated disruption of Nrp1/VEGF-A signalling is permissive to maturation and maintenance of the vasculature in CMT2D mice.

Micro-structure injection molding machine is mainly used for processing the plastic products in micron-size or with micro-structures. This paper focuses on the design and control of the clamping mechanism of micro-structure injection molding machine. Firstly, the deformation of the clamping mechanism was analyzed. The simulation results shows that the clamping force is 5.0051×105N, and it’s bigger than the design value 500kN. Secondly, the kinetic characteristic of the clamping was simulated by ADAMS software. The curves of the displacement, velocity, clamping force of moving platen were analyzed. Thirdly, the control model of clamping mechanism was established. And the LQR controller was designed and simulated by Matlab. The rise time is 0.010s, the settling time is 0.026s and the steady-state is 0.307m.

Gas recognition, smell identification and source localization are among complex problems in today's industry. In this study, we employed an electronic nose (Enose) and applied the Locally Linear Embedding (LLE) algorithm to detect and classify four kinds of industrial gas including C02, NH3, CH4, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The AIRSENSE PEN3 Enose was used for gas detection and odor data acquisition. We compared the performance of the proposed LLE algorithm with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminate Analysis (LDA) in extracting the gas characteristics as well as quantitative analysis and data processing. The results verified that the LLE algorithm outperformed other selected algorithms in multimodal gas recognition. Therefore, the LLE algorithm can play important role in the field of machine olfactory and odor identification.

To investigate the protective effects and the possible molecular mechanisms of chlorogenic acid on H2O2-induced dysfunction and apoptosis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). HUVECs were divided into three groups: H2O2groups (0, 5, 10, 20, 50mM), chlorogenic acid (100nmol/L) groups and atorvastatin (10μmol/L) groups. The eNOS mRNA expression was measured by RT-PCR. The content of NO in the supernatant was detected by the nitrate reductase assay. Cells activity was evaluated by the MTT assay. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells was measured using H2DCF-DA as a fluorescence probe. Results demonstrated that H2O2caused a significant down-regulation of eNOS mRNA expression and decreased the secretion of NO in a dose-dependent manner compared with the control group. Furthermore, H2O2 induced cell apoptosis, increased ROS accumulation. Nevertheless, these effects of H2O2could be blocked by chlorogenic acid in chlorogenic acid pretreatment groups. CONCLUSION:chlorogenic acid can inhibite H2O2-induced dysfunction and apoptosis in HUVECs, which may be related to its effects on suppressing oxidative stress, up-regulating eNOS pathway. These results suggest the usefulness of chlorogenic acid particularly in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Plants have varying abilities to tolerate chilling (low but not freezing temperatures), and it is largely unknown how plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana achieve chilling tolerance. Here, we describe a genome-wide screen for genes important for chilling tolerance by their putative knockout mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana. Out of 11,000 T-DNA insertion mutant lines representing half of the genome, 54 lines associated with disruption of 49 genes had a drastic chilling sensitive phenotype. Sixteen of these genes encode proteins with chloroplast localization, suggesting a critical role of chloroplast function in chilling tolerance. Study of one of these proteins RBD1 with an RNA binding domain further reveals the importance of chloroplast translation in chilling tolerance. RBD1 is expressed in the green tissues and is localized in the chloroplast nucleoid. It binds directly to 23S rRNA and the binding is stronger under chilling than at normal growth temperatures. The rbd1 mutants are defective in generating mature 23S rRNAs and deficient in chloroplast protein synthesis especially under chilling conditions. Together, our study identifies RBD1 as a regulator of 23S rRNA processing and reveals the importance of chloroplast function especially protein translation in chilling tolerance., Author Summary Compared to cold acclimation (enhancement of freezing tolerance by a prior exposure to low non-freezing temperature), the tolerance mechanism to non-freezing chilling temperatures is not well understood. Here, we performed a genome-wide mutant screen for chilling sensitive phenotype and identified 49 candidate genes important for chilling tolerance in Arabidopsis. Among the proteins encoded by these 49 genes, 16 are annotated as having chloroplast localization, suggesting a critical role of chloroplast function in chilling tolerance. We further studied RBD1, one of the four RNA-binding proteins localized to chloroplast. RBD1 is only expressed in the green photosynthetic tissues and is localized to nucleoid of chloroplasts. Furthermore, RBD1 is found to be a regulator of 23S rRNA processing likely through direct binding to the precursor of 23S rRNA in a temperature dependent manner. Our study thus reveals the importance of chloroplast function especially protein translation in chilling tolerance at genome-wide scale and suggests an adaptive mechanism involving low temperature enhanced activities from proteins such as RBD1 in chilling tolerance.

Based on fillers theory and traditional A/O-MBR theory, anoxic/aerobic hybrid membrane bioreactor system (A/O-HMBR for short) was modified by adding suspended biological fillers in one of the aerobic tanks of the traditional A/O-MBR, in which the filling ratio of fillers was 8%. The thesis mainly studies the nitrogen removal effect in the A/O-HMBR system when the main influence parameters, such as influent C/N(5,7,10), aeration intensity(15m3/h,20m3/h,25m3/h) and HRT(5h,8h,11h), were changed.The experimental results show that when HRT was 8h, C/N was 7, and aeration intensity was 20m3/h, TN removal effect was best.

Microbial-derived volatiles are ubiquitous in the environment and actively engaged in bio-communication with other organisms. Recently, some volatile-producing endophytes (VPEs), cryptic fungal symbionts persisting in healthy plant tissues, have attracted great attention due to their strong antibiotic activity or production of carbon chains that are identical to many of those found in petroleum, while other fragrant volatiles can be used in the flavoring industries. From an application-oriented and biotechnological point of view, these findings show significant promise for sustainable development of agriculture, forestry, and industry, especially in the control of fruit postharvest diseases, soil-borne pathogen management, and bio-fuel production. In comparison, the ecological importance of VPEs has only rarely been addressed and warrants further exploration. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge and future directions in this fascinating research field, and also highlight the constraints and progresses towards commercialization of VPEs products.

Drought is one of the most severe forms of abiotic stresses that threaten the survival of plants, including crops. In turn, plants dramatically change their physiology to increase drought tolerance, including reconfiguration of proteomes. Here, we studied drought-induced proteomic changes in leaves of cultivated tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), a solanaceous plant, using the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based protein labeling technology. Of identified 5570 proteins totally, drought treatment increased and decreased abundance of 260 and 206 proteins, respectively, compared with control condition. Most of these differentially regulated proteins are involved in photosynthesis, metabolism, and stress and defense. Although abscisic acid (ABA) levels greatly increased in drought-treated tobacco leaves, abundance of detected ABA biosynthetic enzymes showed no obvious changes. In contrast, heat shock proteins (HSPs), thioredoxins, ascorbate-, glutathione-, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-related proteins were up- or down-regulated in drought-treated tobacco leaves, suggesting that chaperones and redox signaling are important for tobacco tolerance to drought, and it is likely that redox-induced posttranslational modifications play an important role in modulating protein activity. This study not only provides a comprehensive dataset on overall protein changes in drought-treated tobacco leaves, but also shed light on the mechanism by which solanaceous plants adapt to drought stress.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between tissue riboflavin level and riboflavin transporter 2 (RFT2) protein expression, and the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection and the plasma riboflavin level in gastric carcinoma (GC). Methods: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect tissue riboflavin level in patients with GC. Western blotting was applied to analyze the expression of RFT2 protein in 60 tissue samples from gastric carcinoma together with their normal tissues. The Warthin-starry method, rapid urease test and 14C-UBT were administered to detect the infection of H.pylori. High performance liquid chromatography (H.PYLORILC) was performed to detect plasma riboflavin level in the GC. Results: A significant decrease in the tissue riboflavin level was detected in GC samples compared to those in the normal mucous membrane (17.02±3.91 vs. 21.0±4.73; P = 0.043), and a significant decrease in the RFT2 protein was found in GC samples compared to those in the normal mucous membrane (0.92±0.39 vs. 1.23±0.51; P = 0.042). A positive correlation of tissue riboflavin level with defective expression of RFT2 protein was observed in GC patients (χ2 = 1.969; P = 0.039). Plasma riboflavin level in gastric cancer without H.pylori infection group (1.6674 ng/mL ±0.37009 ng/mL) was higher than H.pylori infection group (1.2207 ng/mL ±0.17727 ng/mL, P = 0.043). Conclusion: The results indicate that RFT2 plays an important role in gastric carcinogenesis by modulating riboflavin absorption. H.pylori infection affects plasma riboflavin level and the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer.
