The fieldwork project at Interamna Lirenas has run for six consecutive years in 2015. Since its inception, our research has endeavoured to combine an integrated array of field methodologies including geophysical survey, fieldwalking and (since 2013) excavation (Bellini et al., 2012; 2013; 2014; Ballantyne et al., 2015). The range of data so collected not only has prompted a fundamental change in our understanding of the long-term development of the site and its hinterland (e.g. moving away from narratives of early decline), but it has also further reinforced our belief in the enormous informative potential of large-scale remote sensing (e.g. making it possible to cast the results of trench excavation and surface collections against a much broader and more complex interpretive canvas).

This paper presents some personal perceptions about “drivers of change,” which have impacted the role and nature of museums since the 1980s, leading to the rise of the visitor-centered museum. Such changes mirror developments occurring in society. In the case of museums, a decline in public funding has occurred at a time when increased resources are required to enable museums to successfully compete for the visitor dollar in the expanding “experience economy.” The authors suggest that the role and nature of museums in the future will be shaped by their responses to many challenges, the most important being: how to increase visitor numbers without negatively impacting on visitor satisfaction; how to adjust policy and practice as museums approach the limits of visitor growth; how to start to reverse the trend of declining public funding by demonstrating museums’ value to society through the adoption of community-centered policies and practice; and perhaps the most unpredictable, how museums will adjust their policies and practices in the face of possible climate change.

We present an analysis of the 3–79 keV NuSTAR spectrum of the low-luminosity active galactic nucleus NGC 7213. In agreement with past observations, we find a lower limit to the high-energy cut-off of E_c > 140 keV, no evidence for a Compton-reflected continuum and the presence of an iron K α complex, possibly produced in the broad-line region. From the application of the MYTORUS model, we find that the line-emitting material is consistent with the absence of a significant Compton reflection if arising from a Compton-thin torus of gas with a column density of 5.0^(+2.0)_(−1.6) × 10^(23) cm^(−2). We report variability of the equivalent width of the iron lines on the time-scale of years using archival observations from XMM–Newton, Chandra and Suzaku. This analysis suggests a possible contribution from dusty gas. A fit with a Comptonization model indicates the presence of a hot corona with a temperature kT_e > 40 keV and an optical depth τ ≲ 1, assuming a spherical geometry.

Good managers recognize the monetary value that corporate reputation, employee loyalty, job satisfaction and positive government relations have on the single bottom line. Such factors enhance shareholder value. From this some theorists argue that a focus exclusively on profit will naturally inculcate behaviours that are socially and environmentally responsible. A contrary view is that, in reality, there exists today unprecedented pressure on business managers to satisfy short-term profits and immediate success, resulting not only in adverse social and environmental impacts of business operations but economic problems as well, as evidenced by the recent Global Financial Crisis. On what is perhaps the 'standard view' of industry responsibility, reflecting social movements, loose, flexible, evolving partnerships that create new market dynamics, the tourism industry shares with local residents, governments and community the obligation to protect and maintain the natural and cultural heritage resources of our planet, both to sustain economies and be passed on unimpaired to future generations (UNEP, 2001; WTO, 1995). Perhaps in no sector of tourism is meeting this responsibility more expected than in ecotourism.
