Search

Einstein Telescope (ET) is a proposed third generation, wide-band gravitational wave (GW) detector. Given its improved detection sensitivity in comparison to the second generation detectors, it will be capable of exploring the universe with GWs up to very high redshifts. In this paper we present the algorithm to answer three main questions regarding the star formation rate density (SFR) (i) when did the formation terminate?, (ii) at what redshift does the SFR peak?, and finally (iii) what is the functional form of SFR at high redshift? for a given population. We present an algorithm to infer the functional form of SFR for different populations of compact binaries originating in stars from Population (Pop) I+II and Pop III, using ET as a single instrument. We show that the reconstruction of SFR is essentially independent of the time delay distributions up to $z \sim 14$ and the accuracy of the reconstruction strongly depends on the time delay distribution only at high redshifts of $z\gtrsim 14$. We define the termination redshift as the redshift where the SFR drops to 1\% of its peak value. In this analysis we constrain the peak of the SFR as a function of redshift and show that ET as a single instrument can distinguish the termination redshifts of different SFRs. The accurate estimate of the termination redshift depends on correctly modelling the tail of the time delay distribution representing delay time $\gtrsim 8$ Gyr., 16 pages, 5+3 figures

Properties of the to-date-observed binary black hole (BBH) merger events suggest a preference towards spin-orbit aligned mergers. Naturally, this has caused widespread interest and speculations regrading implications on various merger formation channels. Here we show that (i) not only the BBH-merger population from isolated binaries, but also (ii) BBH population formed in young massive clusters (YMC) would possess an asymmetry in favour of aligned mergers, in the distribution of the events' effective spin parameter ($\chi_{\rm eff}$). In our analysis, we utilize BBH-merger outcomes from state-of-the-art N-body evolutionary models of YMCs and isolated binary population synthesis. We incorporate, for the first time in such an analysis, misalignments due to both natal kicks and dynamical encounters. The YMC $\chi_{\rm eff}$ distribution has a mean (an anti-aligned merger fraction) of $\langle\chi_{\rm eff}\rangle\leq0.04$ ($f_X-\approx40\%$), which is smaller (larger) than but consistent with the observed asymmetry of $\langle\chi_{\rm eff}\rangle\approx0.06$ ($f_X-\approx28\%$) as obtained from the population analysis by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration. In contrast, isolated binaries alone tend to produce a much stronger asymmetry; for the tested physical models, $\langle\chi_{\rm eff}\rangle\approx0.25$ and $f_X-\lesssim7\%$. Although the YMC $\chi_{\rm eff}$ distribution is more similar to the observed counterpart, none of the channels correctly reproduce the observed distribution. Our results suggest that further extensive model explorations for both isolated-binary and dynamical channels as well as better observational constraints are necessary to understand the physics of 'the symmetry breaking' of the BBH-merger population., Comment: 20 pages including Appendix, 7 figures, 3 tables. There are 214 X-ray point-sources ($L_{\rm X}>10^{35} \mathrm{erg/s}$) identified as X-ray binaries (XRBs) in the nearby spiral galaxy M83. Since XRBs are powered by accretion onto a neutron star or a black hole from a companion/donor star these systems are promising progenitors of merging double compact objects (DCOs): black hole - black hole (BH-BH), black hole - neutron star (BH-NS), or neutron star - neutron star (NS-NS) systems. The connection (i.e. XRBs evolving into DCOs) may provide some hints to the yet unanswered question: what is the origin of the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA mergers? Available observations do not allow to determine what will be the final fate of the XRBs observed in M83. Yet, we can use evolutionary model of isolated binaries to reproduce the population of XRBs in M83 by matching model XRBs numbers/types/luminosities to observations. Knowing the detailed properties of M83 model XRBs (donor/accretor masses, their evolutionary ages and orbits) we follow their evolution to the death of donor stars to check whether any merging DCOs are formed. Although all merging DCOs in our isolated binary evolution model go through the XRB phase (defined as reaching X-ray luminosity from RLOF/wind accretion onto NS/BH above $10^{35}$ erg/s), only very few XRBs evolve to form merging (in Hubble time) DCOs. For M83 with its solar-like metallicity stars and continiuous star-formation we find that only $\sim 1-2\%$ of model XRBs evolve into merging DCOs depending on the adopted evolutionary physics. This is caused by (i) merger of donor star with compact object during common envelope phase, (ii) binary disruption at the supernova explosion of donor star, (iii) formation of a DCO on a wide orbit (merger time longer than Hubble time)., 11 pages, 1 figure, submitted to A&A

Because of their period-luminosity relation (PLR), classical Cepheids play a key role in the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale and the determination of the Hubble-Lema\^{i}tre constant $H_0$. Recent findings show that the majority of classical Cepheids should be in binary or multiple systems, which might undermine their accuracy, as the extra -- and unaccounted for -- light from the companions of Cepheids causes a shift in the PLR. We quantify this shift using synthetic populations of binary Cepheids that we developed for this purpose, as described in Paper I of this series. We find that while all PLRs are shifted toward brighter values due to the excess light from the companions, the bias in the relative distance modulus between two galaxies hosting binary Cepheids can be either positive or negative, depending on the percentage of binary Cepheids in them. If the binarity percentage in the two galaxies is similar, the effect of binarity is canceled. Otherwise, it introduces a shift in the distance modulus of the order of millimags in the near-infrared passbands and Wesenheit indices, and tens of millimags in the visual domain; its exact value depends on the variant of the synthetic population (a unique combination of metallicity, star formation history, shape and location of the instability strip, and initial parameter distributions). Such shifts in distance moduli to type Ia supernova host galaxies introduce an additional statistical error on $H_0$, which however does not prevent measuring $H_0$ with a precision of 1%., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Gravitational-wave observations have the capability to strongly differentiate between different assumptions for how binary compact objects form. In this work, we show how to carefully interpolate a marginal likelihood between choices of binary evolution model parameters. Using the StarTrack binary evolution code, we compare one- and four-dimensional binary evolution models to the compact binary mergers reported in recent gravitational-wave observing runs. We first consider a one-dimensional model, studying the effect of supernova kick velocity (drawn from a Maxwellian with dispersion {\sigma}_eff) on the simulated population of compact binary mergers, and find support for substantial SN recoil kicks. We follow this up with a four-dimensional study of {\sigma}_eff, mass transfer efficiency (fa) and the efficiency of angular momentum depletion from ejected material (\b{eta}) during Roche-lobe accretion, and an observation-driven reduction in the mass-loss rate estimated from stellar wind models (fwind1). We find that three of them ({\sigma}_eff, fa, and fwind1) can be efficiently limited by these observational comparisons. After initially sampling from a uniform prior in the space of these parameters, we refined our sampling by iteratively estimating a Bayesian likelihood for each simulation and fitting that likelihood to a parametric model (a truncated Gaussian) in order to propose new. Our maximum likelihood simulation (K0559) has parameters: {\sigma}_eff = 108.3 km/s (indicating substantial SN recoil kicks), fa = 0.922 (indicating efficient mass transfer), and fwind1 = 0.328 (indicating support for reduced wind-driven mass loss). Note that our estimates are only valid within one particular model of compact binary formation through isolated binary evolution and do not yet take into account the impact of other uncertain pieces of stellar physics and binary evolution.

We systematically investigate the mergers of neutron star-white dwarf binaries from beginning to end, with focus on the properties of the inflows and outflows in accretion disks and their electromagnetic emissions. Using population synthesis models, we determine a subset of these binaries in which the white dwarf companion undergoes unstable mass transfer and complete tidal disruption, forming a large accretion disk around the neutron star. The material evolves according to an advection-dominated accretion disk model with nuclear burning, neutrino-emissions, and disk-surface wind ejection. The extreme dynamics of the entire process has proven difficult for analytic analysis, and thus currently the properties are poorly understood. The outflows from the mergers are iron- and nickel-rich, giving rise to optical and infrared emissions powered from the decay of the radioactive iron-type isotopes, calculated via the SuperNu light-curve code. We find these systems capable of powering bright, yet short-lived, optical transients with the potential to power gamma-ray bursts., Comment: LA-UR-22-29879

The LIGO/Virgo collaboration has reported 50 black hole-black hole (BH-BH) mergers and 8 candidates recovered from digging deeper into the detectors noise. The majority of these mergers have low effective spins pointing toward low BH spins and efficient angular momentum transport in massive stars as proposed by several models (e.g., the Tayler-Spruit dynamo). However, out of these 58 mergers, 7 are consistent with having high effective spin parameter (chi_eff>0.3). Additionally, 2 events seem to have high effective spins sourced from the spin of the primary (more massive) BH. These particular observations could be used to discriminate between the isolated binary and dynamical formation channels. It might seem that high BH spins point to a dynamical origin if angular momentum transport in stars is efficient and forms low-spinning BHs. In such a case dynamical formation is required to produce second and third generations of BH-BH mergers with typically high-spinning BHs. Here we show, however, that isolated binary BH-BH formation also naturally reproduces such highly spinning BHs. Our models start with efficient angular momentum transport in massive stars that is needed to reproduce the majority of BH-BH mergers with low effective spins. Later, some of the binaries are subject to a tidal spin-up allowing the formation of a moderate fraction (~10%) of BH-BH mergers with high effective spins (chi_eff>=0.4-0.5). In addition, isolated binary evolution can produce a small fraction of BH-BH mergers with almost maximally spinning primary BHs. The mass, origin, and evolutionary stage of the binary system LB-1 have been intensely debated, following the claim that it hosts an similar to 70Mblack hole, in stark contrast with the expectations for Galactic remnants. We conducted a high-resolution, phase-resolved spectroscopic study of its Paschen lines, using the Calar Alto 3.5 m telescope. We find that Pa beta and Pa gamma(after subtraction of the stellar absorption component) are well fitted with a standard double-peaked disk profile. We measured the velocity shifts of the red and blue peaks at 28 orbital phases: the line center has an orbital motion in perfect antiphase with the secondary, and the radial velocity amplitude ranges from 8 to 13 km s(-1), for different methods of profile modeling. We interpret this curve as proof that the disk traces the orbital motion of the primary, ruling out the circumbinary disk and the hierarchical triple scenarios. The phase-averaged peak-to-peak half-separation (a proxy for the projected rotational velocity of the outer part of the disk) is similar to 70 km s(-1), larger than the orbital velocity of the secondary and inconsistent with a circumbinary disk. From those results, we infer a primary mass 4-8 times higher than the secondary mass. Moreover, we show that the intensity ratio of the blue and red peaks has a sinusoidal behavior in phase with the secondary, which we attribute to external irradiation of the outer part of the disk. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of competing scenarios proposed for LB-1. Further astrometric Gaia data will test between alternative solutions. © 2020. We employ population synthesis method to model the double neutron star (DNS) population and test various possibilities on natal kick velocities gained by neutron stars after their formation. We first choose natal kicks after standard core collapse SN from a Maxwellian distribution with velocity dispersion of sigma=265 km/s as proposed by Hobbs et al. (2005) and then modify this distribution by changing the velocity dispersion towards smaller and larger kick values. We also take into account the possibility of NS formation through electron capture supernova. In this case we test two scenarios: zero natal kick or small natal kick, drawn from Maxwellian distribution with sigma = 26.5 km/s. We calculate the present-day orbital parameters of binaries and compare the resulting eccentricities with those known for observed DNSs. As an additional test we calculate Galactic merger rates for our model populations and confront them with observational limits. We do not find any model unequivocally consistent with both observational constraints simultaneously.The models with low kicks after CCSN for binaries with the second NS forming through core collapse SN are marginally consistent with the observations. This means that either 14 observed DNSs are not representative of the intrinsic Galactic population, or that our modeling of DNS formation needs revision., 14 pages, 1 figure

The merger of two massive 30 Msun black holes has been detected in gravitational waves (1,GW150914). This discovery validates recent predictions (2-4) that massive binary black holes would constitute the first detection. However, previous calculations have not sampled the relevant binary black hole progenitors---massive, low-metallicity binary stars---with sufficient accuracy and input physics to enable robust predictions to better than several orders of magnitude (5-10). Here we report a suite of high-precision numerical simulations of binary black hole formation via the evolution of isolated binary stars, providing a framework to interpret GW150914 and predict the properties of subsequent binary black hole gravitational-wave events. Our models imply that these events form in an environment where the metallicity is less than 10 percent of solar; have initial masses of 40-100 Msun; and interact through mass transfer and a common envelope phase. Their progenitors likely form either at 2 Gyr, or somewhat less likely, at 11 Gyr after the Big Bang. Most binary black holes form without supernova explosions, and their spins are nearly unchanged since birth, but do not have to be parallel. The classical field formation of binary black holes proposed in this study, with low natal kicks and restricted common envelope evolution, produces 40 times more binary black holes than dynamical formation channels involving globular clusters (11) and is comparable to the rate from homogeneous evolution channels (12-15). Our calculations predict detections of about 1,000 black hole mergers per year with total mass of 20-80 Msun once second generation ground-based gravitational wave observatories reach full sensitivity., Comment: Nature, published on June 23, 2016. There are 19 confirmed BH binaries in the Galaxy. 16 of them are X-ray transients hosting a ~5-15 Msun BH and a Roche-lobe overflowing low-mass companion. Companion masses are found mostly in 0.1-1 Msun mass range with peak at 0.6 Msun. The formation of these systems is believed to involve a common envelope phase, initiated by a BH progenitor, expected to be a massive star >20 Msun. It was realized that it may be very problematic for a low-mass companion to eject a massive envelope of the black hole progenitor. It invoked suggestions that an intermediate-mass companion ejects the envelope, and then is shredded by the Roche-lobe overflow to its current low-mass. But this creates another issue; a temperature mismatch between hot models and the observed cool low-mass donors. Finally, the main driver of Roche-lobe overflow that is believed to be magnetic braking does not seem to follow any theoretically calculated models. Number of ideas were put forward to explain various parts of this conundrum; pre-main sequence donor nature, alternative approach to magnetic braking and common envelope energy was revisited. We test various proposals and models to show that no overall solution exists so far. We argue that common envelope physics is not crucial in the understanding BH transient physical properties, but may affect significantly their formation rates. Our failure most likely indicates that either the current evolutionary models for low-mass stars and magnetic braking are not realistic or that the intrinsic population of BH transients is quite different from the observed one., Submitted to ApJ

BH-NS and BH-BH systems are among the most promising gravitational wave sources detectable by advanced LIGO/VIRGO and the Einstein Telescope. Although the rates of these systems may be above those of NS-NS mergers, BH-NS and BH-BH systems are difficult to detect, and thusfar none have been observed. But the progenitors of BH-NS and BH-BH binary systems may have been observed, in the form of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs). In this paper, we continue work studying these potential progenitors of these important gravitational wave sources. In the first two papers of the series, we have demonstrated that IC10 X-1 and NGC300 X-1 are direct progenitors of BH-BH systems and that Cyg X-1 may form, alas with a very low probability, a BH-NS system. Here, we analyze the Galactic binaries GX 301-2, Vela X-1, XTEJ1855-026, 4U1907+09, Cir X-1 and extra-galactic LMC X-1, LMC X-3, M33 X-1. In each case, we find that the future evolution will not allow the formation of a BH-NS nor a BH-BH system. Most of these binaries will soon merge in the common envelope phase, with a compact object sinking into a helium-rich core of a stellar companion. This "helium-merger" may be a progenitor for long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Based on the observed HMXB population, the rate of helium-mergers may make up a sizable fraction of long-duration GRBs. Due to this high number of potential GRB progenitors, a chance that a Galactic HMXB has caused one of the recent major mass extinction events is significant (10-20%)., ApJ, submitted (6 pages of text + 1 table + 3 figures)

We compare the current LIGO/Virgo upper limits on double compact object volumetric merger rates with our theoretical predictions. Our optimistic models are a factor of 3 below the existing upper limits for massive BH-BH systems with total mass 50-70 Msun, suggesting that a small increase in observational sensitivity may bring the first detections. The LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave observatories are currently being upgraded to advanced design sensitivity. If a sizeable population of BH-BH binaries is detected, the maximum total binary mass of this population will discriminate between two general families of common envelope models. If no binaries are detected, the new upper limits will provide astrophysically useful information about the environment and physical processes (e.g., metallicity of host galaxies or BH natal kicks) crucial to the formation of binaries containing black holes. For NS-NS systems, our predicted rates are 3 orders of magnitude below the current upper limits; even if advanced instruments reach their design sensitivities (factors of 10 times in distance, and 1,000 times in volumetric rate) the detection of NS-NS systems is not assured. However, we note that although our predicted NS-NS merger rates are consistent with estimates derived from Galactic NS-NS binaries and short GRBs, they are on the low side of these empirical estimates., Replaced with qualitatively new and extended material: ApJ (submitted as a new paper)

Wide binaries made up of two white dwarfs (WDs) receive far less attention than their tight counterparts. However, our tests using the binary population synthesis code StarTrack indicate that, for any set of reasonable initial conditions, there exists a significant observable population of double white dwarfs (WDWDs) with orbital separations of 102-105 AU. We adapt the technique of Dhital et al. to search for candidate common proper-motion WD companions separated by 12,000 spectroscopically confirmed hydrogen-atmosphere WDs recently identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using two techniques to separate random alignments from high-confidence pairs, we find nine new high-probability wide WDWDs and confirm three previously identified candidate wide WDWDs. This brings the number of known wide WDWDs to 45; our new pairs are a significant addition to the sample, especially at small proper motions (10''). Spectroscopic follow-up and an extension of this method to a larger, photometrically selected set of SDSS WDs may eventually produce a large enough dataset for WDWDs to realize their full potential as testbeds for theories of stellar evolution.

The recent distance determination allowed precise estimation of the orbital parameters of Cyg X-1, which contains a massive 14.8 Msun BH with a 19.2 Msun O star companion. This system appears to be the clearest example of a potential progenitor of a BH-NS system. We follow the future evolution of Cyg X-1, and show that it will soon encounter a Roche lobe overflow episode, followed shortly by a Type Ib/c supernova and the formation of a NS. It is demonstrated that in majority of cases (70%) the supernova and associated natal kick disrupts the binary due to the fact that the orbit expanded significantly in the Roche lobe overflow episode. In the reminder of cases (30%) the newly formed BH-NS system is too wide to coalesce in the Hubble time. Only sporadically (1%) a Cyg X-1 like binary may form a coalescing BH-NS system given a favorable direction and magnitude of the natal kick. If Cyg X-1 like channel (comparable mass BH-O star bright X-ray binary) is the only or dominant way to form BH-NS binaries in the Galaxy we can estimate the empirical BH-NS merger rate in the Galaxy at the level of 0.001 per Myr. This rate is so low that the detection of BH-NS systems in gravitational radiation is highly unlikely, generating Advanced LIGO/VIRGO detection rates at the level of only 1 per century. We present the summary of the recent investigations of double black hole binaries in context of their formation and merger rates. In particular we discuss the spectrum of black hole masses, the formation scenarios in the local Universe and the estimates of detection rates for gravitational radiation detectors like LIGO and VIRGO. Our study is based on observed properties of known Galactic and extra-galactic stellar mass black holes and evolutionary predictions. We investigate the effect of including a significant ``binary twin'' population (binaries with almost equal mass stars, q = M2/M1 > 0.95) for the production of double compact objects and some resulting consequences, including LIGO inspiral rate and some properties of short-hard gamma-ray bursts. We employ very optimistic assumptions on the twin fraction (50%) among all binaries, and therefore our calculations place an upper limits on the influence of twins on double compact object populations. We show that for LIGO the effect of including twins is relatively minor: although the merger rates does indeed increase when twins are considered, the rate increase is fairly small (1.5). Also, chirp mass distribution for double compact objects formed with or without twins are almost indistinguishable. If double compact object are short-hard GRB progenitors, including twins in population synthesis calculations does not alter significantly the earlier rate predictions for the event rate. However, for one channel of binary evolution, introducing twins more than doubles the rate of ``very prompt'' NS-NS mergers (time to merger less than 1 Myr) compared to models with the ``flat'' q distribution. In that case, 70% of all NS-NS binaries merge within 100 Myr after their formation, indicating a possibility of a very significant population of ``prompt'' short-hard gamma-ray bursts, associated with star forming galaxies. We also point out that, independent of assumptions, fraction of such prompt neutron star mergers is always high, 35--70%. We note that recent observations (e.g., Berger et al.) indicate that fraction of short-hard GRBs found in young hosts is at least 40% and possibly even 80%., 12 pages, 1 table, 4 figures (submitted to ApJ)

Galactic double white dwarfs were postulated as a source of confusion limited noise for LISA, the future space-based gravitational wave observatory. Until very recently, the Galactic population consisted of a relatively well studied disk population, a somewhat studied smaller bulge population and a mostly unknown, but potentially large halo population. It has been argued that the halo population may produce a signal that is much stronger (factor of ~5 in spectral amplitude) than the disk population. However, this surprising result was not based on an actual calculation of a halo white dwarf population but was derived on (i) the assumption that one can extrapolate the halo population properties from those of the disk population and (ii) the postulated (unrealistically) high number of white dwarfs in the halo. We perform the first calculation of a halo white dwarf population using population synthesis models. Our comparison with the signal arising from double white dwarfs in the Galactic disk+bulge clearly shows that it is impossible for the double white dwarf halo signal to exceed that of the rest of the Galaxy. Using microlensing results to give an upper limit on the content of white dwarfs in the halo (~30 % baryonic mass in white dwarfs), our predicted halo signal is a factor of 10 lower than the disk+bulge signal. Even in the implausible case where all of the baryonic halo mass is found in white dwarfs, the halo signal does not become comparable to that of the disk+bulge, and thus would still have a negligible effect on the detection of other LISA sources., 8 pages, 3 figures, ApJ submitted

We use the StarTrack population synthesis code to discuss potential progenitor models of SN Ia: single degenerate scenario, semi-detached double white dwarf binary and double degenerate scenario. Using the most recent calculations of accretion onto white dwarfs, we consider SN Ia explosions of various white dwarfs in binary systems. We calculate the evolutionary delay times from the zero age main sequence to the explosion, and verify which scenarios can satisfy the constraints found by Strolger et al. (2004), i.e. a delay time of 2-4 Gyrs. It is found that the semi-detached double white dwarf binary model is inconsistent with observations. Only SN Ia progenitors in the double degenerate scenario are compatible with observations in all tested evolutionary models, with a characteristic delay time of about 3 Gyrs. If double degenerate mergers are excluded as SN Ia progenitors, we find that the single degenerate scenario may explain the observed delay times for models with low common envelope efficiency. Compact object binaries, mostly double with dwarfs, are believed to be a potential source of confusion-limited noise for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In a specific frequency range, this noise may rise above the instrumental noise sources and hence hinder detection of other types of signals, e.g. extreme mass ratio inspirals of stellar mass objects into supermassive black holes. In most previous studies only detached populations of compact object binaries have been considered. Here, we investigate the influence of Galactic populations of compact mass transferring binaries on the shape and strength of the LISA signal and compare our results with the signal for detached binaries only. Our population synthesis includes all binary systems containing two compact remnants. It is found that 99.5% of these systems are double white dwarfs, and therefore we consider only binaries consisting of two white dwarfs when calculating the LISA signal. We find that the mass transferring binaries contributing to the confusion limited noise dominate the population of LISA systems by number (60%), due to their long lifetimes (few Gyrs). However, due to the very specific physical properties of mass transferring systems, it is found that their contribution to the noise is negligible at low frequencies and detached systems will set the magnitude of the confusion-limited signal in this range. However, the mass transferring systems begin to dominate the signal at higher frequencies (f>6 mHz). The transition frequency at which the confusion limited regime becomes important is found at 4 mHz. In this paper we consider the population of eccentric binaries with a neutron star and a white dwarf that has been revealed in our galaxy in recent years through binary pulsar observations. We apply our statistical analysis method (Kim, Kalogera, & Lorimer 2003)and calculate the Galactic formation rate of these binaries empirically. We then compare our results with rate predictions based on binary population synthesis from various research groups and for various ranges of model input parameters. For our reference moel, we find the Galactic formation rate of these eccentric systems to be ~7 per Myr, about an order of magnitude smaller than results from binary evolution estimations. However, the empirical estimates are calculated with no correction for pulsar beaming, and therefore they should be taken as lower limits. Despite uncertainties that exceed an order of magnitude, there is significant overlap of the various rate calculations. We summarize our results on the Galactic merger rate of double neutron stars (DNS) in view of the recent discovery of PSR J0737-3039. We also present previously unpublished results for the 'global' probability distribution of merger rate values that incorporate the presently known systematics from the radio pulsar luminosity function. The most likely value obtained from the global distribution is only ~15 per Myr, but a re-analysis of the current pulsar sample and radio luminosities is needed for a reliable assessment of the best fitting distribution. We compute and present the distribution in mass of single and binary neutron stars, strange stars, and black holes. The calculations were performed using a stellar population synthesis code. We follow evolution of massive single stars as well as binaries with high mass primaries. The final product of the latter evolution can be either a binary composed of a white dwarf and a compact object (neutron star, black hole, strange star), two compact objects in a binary, or two single stars if the system was disrupted. We find in binaries a population of black holes which are more massive than single black holes which are a product of either binary or single evolution. GRB data accumulated over the years have shown that the distribution of their time duration is bimodal. While there is some evidence that long bursts are associated with star-forming regions, nothing is known regarding the class of short bursts. Their very short timescales are hard to explain with the collapse of a massive star, but would be naturally produced by the merger of two compact objects, such as two neutron stars (NS), or a neutron star and a black hole (BH). As for the case of long bursts, afterglow obervations for short bursts should help reveal their origin. By using updated population synthesis code calculations, we simulate a cosmological population of merging NS-NS and NS-BH, and compute the distribution of their galactic off-sets, the density distribution of their environment, and, if indeed associated with GRBs, their expected afterglow characteristics., Comment: 34 pages with 12 figures, accepted to ApJ

Recently much work in Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) studies was devoted to revealing the nature of outburst mechanism and to looking for GRB progenitors. Several types of progenitors were proposed for GRBs. Most promising objects are collapsars, compact object binaries, Helium star mergers and recently discussed supernovae. In this paper we consider four proposed binary star progenitors of GRBs: double neutron star (NS-NS), black hole neutron star (BH-NS), black hole white dwarf (BH-WD) mergers and Helium star mergers (He-BH). Helium star mergers are a possible outcome of common envelope evolution of a compact object entering the envelope of a giant with a helium core. Using population synthesis we calculate number of the binary progenitors and show that BH-WD and Helium star mergers dominate population of the proposed binary progenitors. Comparison of distribution of different binary mergers around galaxies they are born in, with localization of GRB afterglows in their host galaxies shows that only Helium mergers may be responsible for GRBs with observed afterglows while it excludes NS-NS, BH-NS and BH-WD systems as GRB progenitors. Assuming that all GRBs come from Helium star mergers and comparing numbers of Helium star mergers with observed BATSE GRB rate let us derive upper limit on GRB collimation to be 4 degrees., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, submitted to A&A

Compact object mergers are one of the favorite models of GRBs. It has been noted that in opposition to the collapsars, compact object mergers do not necessarily take place in the host galaxies, and may travel outside of them. With the discovery of afterglows and identification of host galaxies one can measure the distribution of GRBs with respect to their host galaxies. This distribution has been calculated using different population synthesis codes, and for different galactic potentials In this paper we compare the distributions of different types of compact object binaries: double neutron star systems (NS-NS), black hole -neutron star systems (BH-NS) and double black holes (BH-BH). We calculate the orbits and distributions of the projected distances on the sky for two extreme cases: a massive galaxy like the Milky Way, and empty space (corresponding to e.g. a globular cluster), and consider a wide range of possible kick velocity distributions. We find that BH-NS are more likely gamma-ray burst counterparts, since they lie close to the host galaxies, contrary to the NS-NS binaries., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to A&A

Mergers of compact objects may lead to different astrophysical phenomena: they may provide sources of observable gravitational radiation, and also may be connected with gamma-ray bursts. Estimate of the rate with which such mergers take place are based on assumptions about various parameters describing the binary evolution. The distribution of one of these parameters - the kick velocity a neutron star receives at birth will strongly influence the number and orbital parameters of compact objects binaries. We calculate these effect using population synthesis of binary stars and show that the expected compact object merger rate changes by a factor of 30 when the kick velocity varies within its current observational bounds., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to A&A
