Objectives:To examine whether demographic and health factors are associated with risk of electrical shocks and compared mental and physical health before and after an electrical shock.Methods:A 6-month cohort study of 6960 electricians involved weekly questionnaires regarding exposure to electrical shocks, and health. We examined the association between health and demographic factors and the risk of eventual electrical shocks and health before and after a shockResults:Youth and poor health were associated with risk of shocks. Reporting of numbness, cramps/spasms, tremors, tinnitus, dizziness, and flashbacks increased in the week of the shock, but only tinnitus and flashbacks persisted, as other symptoms receded. Severity, high voltage, cross-body exposure, wet entry/exit points, and direct current as well as health worries and/or neuroticism increased some estimatesConclusion:Electrical shocks are common, but rarely result in health effects.

OBJECTIVES: During the last decades a possible association between the psychosocial working environment and increased risk of Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) has been debated. A systematic review from 2009 found moderate evidence that high psychological demands, lack of social support and iso-strain was associated with IHD. Whether the psychosocial working environment plays a role for patients with existing cardiovascular disease on the risk of new cardiac events and readmissions is unknownMETHOD: A cohort of patients under 65 years and treated with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention was established in 2006. Three months after the procedure the patients answered a questionnaire about their psychosocial working environment. A total of 528 patients had returned to work 12 weeks after the procedure, while 97 were still sick-listed. Patients were followed in registers for 3+ years to determine cardiac readmissions and events. We examined the association between psychosocial working environment and adverse events among those who had returned to work at 3 months by Cox Regression analysis.RESULTS: We were not able to detect any significant associations between psychosocial working environment in terms of quantitative and cognitive demands, workload, involvement, influence, tolerance, social support, the combinations of effort-reward and demand-control and the risk of adverse events.CONCLUSIONS: Reporting of problems in the psychosocial working environment are not associated with risk of adverse cardiac events. However, tendencies of a lower risk of cardiac event were present for employees reporting the worst psychosocial environment. This unexpected finding may be explained by vulnerable persons not returning to work.

Objective. To investigate the association between pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and pregnancy-related pelvic pain. Design. Nested case-control study. Setting and population. The Danish National Birth Cohort, a cohort of pregnant women and their children recruited 1996-2002. Methods. The women were interviewed twice during pregnancy and twice after childbirth. The first pregnancy interview provided information on self-reported pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and possible confounders, while data on pregnancy-related pelvic pain came from an interview six months post partum. Cases (n=2 271) were selected on the basis of self-reported pelvic pain, and controls were randomly selected among women who did not report pelvic pain (n=2 649). We used logistic regression analysis to calculate pregnancy-related pelvic pain odds ratios (OR (95% confidence intervals)) according to pre-pregnant BMI. Main outcome measure. Self-reported pregnancy-related pelvic pain. Results. In the total cohort, 18.5% of all pregnant women reported pregnancy-related pelvic pain. In the nested case-control study, the adjusted ORs for overall pelvic pain were 0.9 (0.7-1.2) in underweight women, 1.2 (1.1-1.4) in overweight women, 1.5 (1.2-2.0) in obese women Class 1 (30≤BMI

Udgivelsesdato: 2010-Jul OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible associations between smoking and pregnancy-related pelvic pain. DESIGN: Nested case-control study. SETTING: Denmark 2000-2001. POPULATION: The Danish National Birth Cohort. METHODS: The women were interviewed twice in pregnancy and twice after childbirth. The first pregnancy interview provided information on smoking and possible confounding factors,whereas the first interview after birth addressed case identification.Cases (n = 2302) were defined on the basis of self-reported pelvic pain, and controls were selected among women who did not report pelvic pain (n = 2692). Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate associations between smoking and pelvic pain.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Pregnancy-related pelvic pain. RESULTS: Compared with non-smokers, women who smoked during pregnancy had an adjusted odds ratio of 1.2 (1.0-1.4) for overall pelvic pain, similar to women who stopped smoking in early pregnancy 1.3 (1.1-1.7). The equivalent adjusted odds ratio for severe pelvic pain was 1.2 (1.0-1.5) for smokers, and 1.5 (1.2-1.9)for women who stopped smoking. Smoking intensity, measured as number of cigarettes smoked per day, was associated with pelvic pain in a dose-response pattern. Information about smoking was collected prospectively, which makes it unlikely that differential recall alone explains the results. CONCLUSIONS: Smoking was associated with pregnancy-related pelvic pain, with a dose-response pattern between reported smoking intensity and pelvic pain. These findings suggest a possible new risk factor for a common ailment during pregnancy
