Abstract

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is an attractive option for storing renewable electricity and for the sustainable production of valuable chemicals and fuels. In this roadmap, we review recent progress in fundamental understanding, catalyst development, and in engineering and scale-up. We discuss the outstanding challenges towards commercialization of electrochemical CO2R technology: energy efficiencies, selectivities, low current densities, and stability. We highlight the opportunities in establishing rigorous standards for benchmarking performance, advances in in operando characterization, the discovery of new materials towards high value products, the investigation of phenomena across multiple-length scales and the application of data science towards doing so. We hope that this collective perspective sparks new research activities that ultimately bring us a step closer towards establishing a low- or zero-emission carbon cycle.

2. Density fluctuations in granular piles traversing the glass transition: A grain-scale characterization of the transition via the internal energy

Abstract

The transition into a glassy state of a tapped granular pile is explored in detail using extensive molecular dynamics simulations. We measure the density and density fluctuations of the ensemble of mechanically stable configurations reached after the energy induced by the perturbation has dissipated. We show that the peak in density fluctuations concurs with the density undergoing the transition. We find that different horizontal sub-regions ("layers") along the height of the pile traverse the transition in a similar manner but at distinct tap intensities, demonstrating that at a given intensity certain regions of the same pile may respond glassy while others remain equilibrated. To address this phenomenon, we supplement the conventional approach based purely on properties of the static configurations with investigations of the grain-scale dynamics, induced by a tap, by which the energy is transmitted throughout the pile. We find that the effective energy that particles dissipate is a function of the particles location in the pile and, moreover, that its value plays a distinctive role in the transformation between configurations. This internal energy provides a "temperature-like" parameter that allows us to align the transition into the glassy state for all layers as well as different annealing schedules at a critical value.

3. Extremal fluctuations are essential for relaxation in complex energy landscapes

Abstract

We determine the importance of extreme, record-sized events on the non-equilibrium relaxation ("aging") after a sudden quench into the glassy phase. Here, we directly measure the impact of extreme events on the evolving system in Monte Carlo simulations of Ising spin glasses and ferromagnets undergoing quenches into either a low or high-temperature phase. Our results show that, if we bar the attainment of new record-high energy fluctuations (by explicitly imposing a "lid" on the fluctuation spectrum), further relaxation in the low-temperature glassy phase is impeded markedly while in all other phases such a lid actually accelerates the relaxation process. Such rare record events, emerging naturally in the sequence of ordinary fluctuations of any relaxing system, thus prove to be key in activating the aging dynamics, as has been argued for systems like spin glasses, superconductors, gels, colloids, and granular piles. This dynamics of records succeeds in explaining the logarithmic decay of the free energy and the memory effects encoded in the scaling of two-time correlation functions of those aging systems. These findings are interpreted through the interplay of fluctuations and generic features of the hierarchical, complex energy landscape of glassy systems.

Abstract

Decoupling of the graphene layer from the ferromagnetic substrate via intercalation of sp metal has recently been proposed as an effective way to realize single-layer graphene-based spin-filter. Here, the structural and electronic properties of the prototype system, graphene/Al/Ni(111), are investigated via combination of electron diffraction and spectroscopic methods. These studies are accompanied by state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. Abstract

Here we present an angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray absorption spec-troscopy (XAS), and density-functional theory (DFT) investigations of water and ammonia ad-sorption on graphene/Ni(111). Our results on graphene/Ni(111) reveal the existence of interface states, originating from the strong hybridization of the graphene {\pi} and spin-polarized Ni 3d valence band states. ARPES and XAS data of the H2O (NH3)/graphene/Ni(111) system give an information about the kind of interaction between adsorbed molecules and graphene on Ni(111). Abstract

The bond-percolation properties of the Hanoi networks are analyzed with the renormalization group. Unlike scale-free networks, they are meant to provide an analytically tractable interpolation between finite dimensional, lattice-based models and their mean-field limits. In percolation, the hierarchical small-world bonds in the Hanoi networks impose a new form of order by uniting otherwise disconnected, local clusters. This "patchy" order results in merely a finite probability to obtain a spanning cluster for certain ranges of the bond probability, unlike the usual 0-1 transition found on ordinary lattices. The various networks studied here exhibit a range of phase behaviors, depending on the prevalence of those long-range bonds. Abstract

We present two models for the drying of waterborne paints, which consist of non-volatile latex particles suspended in water. One model considers the water and latex density in a layer as a function of time. Water evaporation at the surface represents the drying. This model results in a one-dimensional free boundary problem, which is solved numerically. Extensions to the model are given that describe the stiffening of the paint. A second model is a particle based dynamical simulation where latex particles form a network through which water particles move. A thin slab of the suspension in a threedimensional box is studied. Water particles escaping the slab at the surface represent the drying, progressing network formation the stiffening of the paint. Both models allow for validation with material properties as determined experimentally on real coatings.

Abstract

The thermal-to-percolative crossover exponent \phi, well-known for ferromagnetic systems, is studied extensively for Edwards-Anderson spin glasses. The scaling of defect energies are determined at the bond percolation threshold p_c, using an improved algorithm. Simulations extend to system sizes above N=10^8 in dimensions d=2,...,7. The results can be related to the behavior of the transition temperature T_g (p-p_c)^\phi between the paramagnetic and the glassy regime for p-> p_c. In three dimensions, where our simulations predict \phi=1.127(5), this scaling form for T_g provides a rare experimental test of predictions arising from the equilibrium theory of low-temperature spin glasses. 13. Stiffness Exponents for Lattice Spin Glasses in Dimensions d=3,...,6

Abstract

The stiffness exponents in the glass phase for lattice spin glasses in dimensions $d=3,...,6$ are determined. To this end, we consider bond-diluted lattices near the T=0 glass transition point $p^*$. This transition for discrete bond distributions occurs just above the bond percolation point $p_c$ in each dimension. Numerics suggests that both points, $p_c$ and $p^*$, seem to share the same $1/d$-expansion, at least for several leading orders, each starting with $1/(2d)$. Hence, these lattice graphs have average connectivities of $\alpha=2dp\gtrsim1$ near $p^*$ and exact graph-reduction methods become very effective in eliminating recursively all spins of connectivity $\leq3$, allowing the treatment of lattices of lengths up to L=30 and with up to $10^5-10^6$ spins. Using finite-size scaling, data for the defect energy width $\sigma(\Delta E)$ over a range of $p>p^*$ in each dimension can be combined to reach scaling regimes of about one decade in the scaling variable $L(p-p^*)^{\nu^*}$. Accordingly, unprecedented accuracy is obtained for the stiffness exponents compared to undiluted lattices ($p=1$), where scaling is far more limited. Surprisingly, scaling corrections typically are more benign for diluted lattices. We find in $d=3,...,6$ for the stiffness exponents $y_3=0.24(1)$, $y_4=0.61(2), y_5=0.88(5)$, and $y_6=1.1(1)$. Abstract

Numerical results are presented indicating d_c=4 as the upper critical dimension for the Bak-Sneppen evolution model. This finding agrees with previous theoretical arguments, but contradicts a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5746-5749 (1998)] that placed d_c as high as d=8. In particular, we find that avalanches are compact for all dimensions d4. Under those conditions, scaling arguments predict a d_c=4, where hyperscaling relations hold for d, 4 pages, RevTex4, as to appear in Phys. Rev. Abstract

A difficult and long-standing problem in mathematical physics concerns the determination of the value of $f(\infty)$ from the asymptotic series for $f(x)$ about $x\!=\!0$. In the past the approach has been to convert the asymptotic series to a sequence of Pad\'e approximants $\{P^n_n(x)\}$ and then to evaluate these approximants at $x\!=\!\infty$. Unfortunately, for most physical applications the sequence $\{P^n_n(\infty)\}$ is slowly converging and does not usually give very accurate results. In this paper we report the results of extensive numerical studies for a large class of functions $f(x)$ associated with strong-coupling lattice approximations. We conjecture that for large $n$, $P^n_n(\infty)\!\sim\!f(\infty)+B/\ln n $. Before installation in ZEUS the Forward Plug Colorimeter FPC was tested and calibrated using the X test b eam facility of the SPS accelerator at CERN This note summarizes setup and conditions of the test b eam measurements The energy calibration of the FPC using GeV electron and pion b eams as well as GeV muon data is describ ed in some detail The detector p erformance with pion and electron b eams is studied and the results of two monitoring systems using a Co source and an LED system are presented

Abstract

The eradication of minimal residual disease (MRD) in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) predicts for improved outcome. However, the wide variety of MRD techniques makes it difficult to interpret and compare different clinical trials. Our aim was to develop a standardized flow cytometric CLL-MRD assay and compare it to real-time quantitative allele-specific oligonucleotide (RQ-ASO) Immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (IgH) polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Analysis of 728 paired blood and marrow samples demonstrated high concordance (87%) for patients off-therapy. Blood analysis was equally or more sensitive than marrow in 92% of samples but marrow analysis was necessary to detect MRD within 3 months of alemtuzumab therapy. Assessment of 50 CLL-specific antibody combinations identified three (CD5/CD19 with CD20/CD38, CD81/CD22 and CD79b/CD43) with low inter-laboratory variation and false-detection rates. Experienced operators demonstrated an accuracy of 95.7% ( specificity 98.8%, sensitivity 91.1%) in 141 samples with 0.01 - 0.1% CLL. There was close correlation and 95% concordance with RQ-ASO IgH-PCR for detection of CLL above 0.01%. The proposed flow cytometry approach is applicable to all sample types and therapeutic regimes, and sufficiently rapid and sensitive to guide therapy to an MRD-negativity in real time. These techniques may be used as a tool for assessing response and comparing the efficacy of different therapeutic approaches.

Abstract

The clinical course of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is heterogeneous with some patients requiring early therapy whereas others will not be treated for years. The evaluation of an individual CLL patient's prognosis remains a problematic issue. The presence or absence of somatic mutations in the IgVH genes is currently the gold-standard prognostic factor, but this technique is labor intensive and costly. Genomic studies uncovered that 70 kDa zeta-associated protein (ZAP-70) expression was associated with unmutated IgVH genes and ZAP-70 protein expression was proposed as a surrogate for somatic mutational status. Among the available techniques for ZAP-70 detection, flow cytometry is most preferable as it allows the simultaneous quantification of ZAP-70 protein expression levels in CLL cells and residual normal lymphocyte subsets. However, several factors introduce variability in the results reported from different laboratories; these factors include the anti-ZAP-70 antibody clone and conjugate, the staining procedure, the gating strategy, and the method of reporting the results. The need for standardization of the approach led to the organization of an international working group focused on harmonizing all aspects of the technique. During this workshop, a technical consensus was reached on the methods for cell permeabilization and immunophenotyping procedures. An assay was then designed that allowed comparison of two clones of anti-ZAP-70 antibody and the identification of the expression of this molecule in B, T, and NK cells identified in a four multicolor analysis. This procedure was applied to three stabilized blood samples, provided by the UK NEQAS group to all participating members of this study, in order to minimize variability caused by sample storage and shipment. Analysis was performed in 20 laboratories providing interpretable data from 14 centers. Various gating strategies were used and the ZAP-70 levels were expressed as percentage positive (POS) relative to isotype control or normal B-cells or normal T-cells; in addition the levels were reported as a ratio of expression in CLL cells relative to T-cells. The reported level of ZAP-70 expression varied greatly depending on the antibody and the method used to express the results. The CLL/T-cell ZAP-70 expression ratio showed a much lower interlaboratory variation than other reporting strategies and is recommended for multicenter studies. Stabilization results in decreased expression of CD19 making gating more difficult and therefore stabilized samples are not optimal for multicentric analysis of ZAP-70 expression. We assessed the variation of ZAP-70 expression levels in fresh cells according to storage time, which demonstrated that ZAP-70 is labile but sufficiently stable to allow comparison using fresh samples distributed between labs in Europe.
