In strongly correlated systems the complete determination of the dynamical susceptibility $\chi(\textbf{q}, \omega)$ is of special relevance because of the entwinement of the spin and charge components. Although Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) spectra are directly related to both the charge ($\chi''_c(\textbf{q}, \omega)$) and the spin ($\chi''_s(\textbf{q}, \omega)$) contributions, only the latter has been extensively studied with RIXS so far. Here we show how to extract from RIXS spectra of high-$T_c$ superconducting cuprates relevant properties of $\chi''_c$, such as the presence of the superconducting gap and of the pseudogap. In particular, we exploit the temperature dependence of the Cu L$_3$ edge RIXS spectra of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ at specific wave-vectors q. The signature of the two gaps is in the departure of the low energy Bosonic excitation continuum from the statistical temperature-dependence. This approach can be immediately used to investigate systematically the nature of the pseudogap in cuprates, thereby taking advantage of the RIXS technique that does not suffer the limitations of surface-sensitive electron spectroscopies. We have investigated the 3d orbital excitations in CaCuO2 (CCO), Nd2CuO4 (NCO) and La2CuO4 (LCO) using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In LCO they behave as well-localized excitations, similarly to several other cuprates. On the contrary, in CCO and NCO the dxy orbital clearly disperse, pointing to a collective character of this excitation (orbiton) in compounds without apical oxygen. We ascribe the origin of the dispersion as stemming from a substantial next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) orbital superexchange. Such an exchange leads to the liberation of orbiton from its coupling to magnons, which is associated with the orbiton hopping between nearest neighbor copper sites. We show that the exceptionally large NNN orbital superexchange can be traced back to the absence of apical oxygens suppressing the charge transfer energy., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Identifying quantum critical points (QCPs) and their associated fluctuations may hold the key to unraveling the unusual electronic phenomena observed in cuprate superconductors. Recently, signatures of quantum fluctuations associated with charge order (CO) have been inferred from the anomalous enhancement of CO excitations that accompany the reduction of the CO order parameter in the superconducting state. To gain more insight about the interplay between CO and superconductivity, here we investigate the doping dependence of this phenomenon throughout the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L3- edge. As doping increases, the CO wavevector decreases, saturating at a commensurate value of 0.25 r.l.u. beyond a characteristic doping pc, where the correlation length becomes shorter than the apparent periodicity (4a0). Such behavior is indicative of the fluctuating nature of the CO; and the proliferation of CO excitations in the superconducting state also appears strongest at pc, consistent with expected behavior at a CO QCP. Intriguingly, pc appears to be near optimal doping, where the superconducting transition temperature Tc is maximal., Comment: This is a submitted version of the manuscript. Motivated by the recent synthesis of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+\delta}$ (BCO), a high temperature superconducting cuprate with putative $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ ground state symmetry, we investigated its electronic structure by means of Cu $L_3$ x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L_3$ edge on a polycrystalline sample. We show that the XAS profile of BCO is characterised by two peaks associated to inequivalent Cu sites, and that its RIXS response features a single, sharp peak associated to crystal-field excitations. We argue that these observations are only partially compatible with the previously proposed crystal structure of BCO. Based on our spectroscopic results and on previously published powder diffraction measurements, we propose a crystalline structure characterized by two inequivalent Cu sites located at alternated planes along the $c$ axis: nominally trivalent Cu(1) belonging to very short Cu-O chains, and divalent Cu(2) in the oxygen deficient CuO$_ {1.5}$ planes. We also analyze the low-energy region of the RIXS spectra to estimate the magnitude of the magnetic interactions in BCO and find that in-plane nearest neighbor superexchange exceeds 120~meV, similarly to that of other layered cuprates. Although these results do not support the pure $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ ground state scenario, they hint at a significant departure from the common quasi-2D electronic structure of superconducting cuprates of pure $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry.

We investigate the Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of a quasi-1D antiferromagnet Ca$_2$CuO$_3$. In addition to the magnetic excitations, which are well-described by the two-spinon continuum, we observe two dispersive orbital excitations, the $3d_{xy}$ and the $3d_{yz}$ orbitons. We carry out a quantitative comparison of the RIXS spectra, obtained with two distinct incident polarizations, with a theoretical model. We show that any realistic spin-orbital model needs to include a finite, but realistic, Hund's exchange $J_H \approx 0.5$ eV. Its main effect is an increase in orbiton velocities, so that their theoretically calculated values match those observed experimentally. Even though Hund's exchange also mediates some interaction between spinon and orbiton, the picture of spin-orbit separation remains intact and describes orbiton motion in this compound., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

The role of the model parameters (e.g. phonon energy $\omega_0$, intermediate state lifetime $1/\Gamma$, EPC matrix element $M$, and detuning energy $\Omega$) is thoroughly analyzed, providing general relations among them that can be used to make quantitative estimates of the dimensionless EPC $g = (M/\omega_0)^2$ without detailed microscopic modeling. We then apply these methods to very high resolution Cu $L_3$ edge RIXS spectra of three Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ films. For the insulating antiferromagnetic parent compound the value of $M$ as a function of the in-plane momentum transfer is obtained for Cu-O bond-stretching (breathing) and bond-bending (buckling) phonon branches. For the underdoped and the nearly optimally doped samples, the effects of Coulomb screening and of charge-density-wave correlations on $M$ are assessed. In light of the anticipated further improvements of the RIXS experimental resolution, this work provides a solid framework for an exhaustive investigation of the EPC in cuprates and other quantum materials., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

Although the CDW had been predicted by theory, important questions remain about the extent to which the CDW influences lattice and charge degrees of freedom and its characteristics as functions of doping and temperature. These questions are intimately connected to the origin of the CDW and its relation to the mysterious cuprate pseudogap. Here, we use ultrahigh resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to reveal new CDW character in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{\delta} (Bi2212). At low temperature, we observe dispersive excitations from an incommensurate CDW that induces anomalously enhanced phonon intensity, unseen using other techniques. Near the pseudogap temperature T*, the CDW persists, but the associated excitations significantly weaken and the CDW wavevector shifts, becoming nearly commensurate with a periodicity of four lattice constants. The dispersive CDW excitations, phonon anomaly, and temperature dependent commensuration provide a comprehensive momentum space picture of complex CDW behavior and point to a closer relationship with the pseudogap state.

In Charge Coupled Device (CCD) detectors the electrons excited upon absorption of a single x-ray photon quickly diffuse and generate charge-spots often larger than pixel dimensions. In the soft x-ray range this phenomenon drastically limits the effective spatial resolution to approximately 25\mu m, irrespective of the pixel size. For very low fluence the charge-cloud centroid determination can be used, on each individual spot, to estimate the actual photon impact position with sub-pixel precision. The readout noise and speed, together with the charge and spatial undersampling, are the main factors limiting the accuracy of this procedure in commercial devices. We have developed and extensively tested an algorithm for efficient centroid reconstruction on images acquired by low noise detectors not designed for single photon counting. We have thus measured a position uncertainty of 6-7\mu m in CCDs with 13.5\mu m and 20.0\mu m pixel size, around 1 keV photon energy. We have analyzed the centroid calculation performances by modelling the spot generation process. We show how the resolution is affected by both random uncertainty, mainly ascribed to the readout noise, and systematic error, due to the undersampling of the charge spot. Taking spinon excitations in the quantum antiferromagnet CaCu2O3 as an example, we demonstrate that femtosecond dynamics of magnetic excitations can be probed by direct resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). To this end, we isolate the contributions of single and double spin-flip excitations in experimental RIXS spectra, identify the physical mechanisms that cause them and determine their respective timescales. By comparing theory and experiment, we find that double spin flips need a finite amount of time to be generated, rendering them sensitive to the core-hole lifetime, whereas single spin flips are to a very good approximation independent of it. This shows that RIXS can grant access to time-domain dynamics of excitations and illustrates how RIXS experiments can distinguish between excitations in correlated electron systems based on their different time dependence.

We present high resolution (DeltaE=120 meV) resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data measured at the Ni L3 edge (2p_{3/2}--3d) on the paradigmatic antiferromagnetic oxide NiO. Spectra reveal clear signatures of magnetic excitations at approximately 95 and approximately 190 meV whose energy seems independent from transferred momentum. These spectral features are well reproduced by a single Ni2+ ion model in an effective exchange field. Within this local model the two magnetic excitations are characterized by a variation of the atomic magnetic moment along the local ordering direction (DeltaS_{alpha}) of one and two units. The DeltaS_{alpha}=2 case has different nature from bimagnons observed in optical Raman spectra, for which DeltaS_{alpha}=0.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements performed jointly across the M-2,M-3 and L-3 absorption thresholds are used to study CoO local electronic structure and are supported by model calculations. The high-resolution experimental data provide a precise set of parameters to describe the correlated response of valence electrons. The same core-hole independent set of parameters within the single impurity Anderson model is used to describe both the M (3p-3d) and L (2p-3d) resonances. This work shows that combining M and L scattering data provides an enhanced contrast view of the spectral weights. Measured M-2,M-3-RIXS spectra are observed to be free of charge-transfer or normal fluorescence contributions. Moreover the cross section of M-RIXS final states with change in spin multiplicity is low. Combining this information with L-edge studies establishes an appealing means of making a better separation between on-site and intersite (ligand to metal) electronic excitations. Experimental and theoretical features specific to RIXS studies performed at M and L edges are summarized as a basis for future studies on complex transition metal compounds.

We performed bulk-sensitive x-ray absorption (XAS) in the partial fluorescence yield (PFY) mode, and resonant x-ray emission (RXES) measurements of the solid solution Sc (7 at.%):Ce at the Ce L-3 (2p-->5d) and M-4,M-5 (3d-->4f) absorption edges. We deduce an increasing 4f-band hybridization from the gamma-phase stable at room temperature to the low-temperature alpha-Ce, consistent with the "Kondo collapse" scenario for the transition. The enhanced intrinsic resolution of PFY-XAS allows us to resolve the elusive three-peak structure predicted by theory. Thanks to the selective enhancement typical of RXES, we could estimate the small but non-negligible contribution of the f(2) configuration in the hybrid ground state, and its change in the two phases. The linear dichroism effect in the M-4,M-5 RXES spectra is consistent with the observed hybridization of 4f and conduction states.

We provide a novel experimental method to quantitatively estimate the electron-phonon coupling and its momentum dependence from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra based on the detuning of the incident photon energy away from an absorption resonance. We apply it to the cuprate parent compound NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$ and find that the electronic coupling to the oxygen half-breathing phonon mode is strongest at the Brillouin zone boundary, where it amounts to $\sim 0.17$ eV, in agreement with previous studies. In principle, this method is applicable to any absorption resonance suitable for RIXS measurements and will help to define the contribution of lattice vibrations to the peculiar properties of quantum materials., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures
