1. 5D tomographic phase-space reconstruction of particle bunches

Abstract

We propose a new beam diagnostics method to reconstruct the phase space of charged particle bunches in 5 dimensions, which consist of the horizontal and vertical positions and divergences as well as the time axis. This is achieved by combining a quadrupole-based transverse phase-space tomography with the adjustable streaking angle of a polarizable X-band transverse deflection structure (PolariX TDS). We demonstrate with detailed simulations that the method is able to reconstruct various complex phase-space distributions and that the quality of the reconstruction depends on the number of input projections. This method allows for the identification and visualization of previously unnoticed detailed features in the phase-space distribution, and can thereby be used as a tool towards improving the performance of particle accelerators, or performing more accurate simulation studies.

Abstract

Capacitively coupled plasmas (CCP) comprise one of the main tool in active use in the plasma processing industry. However, increasing the driving frequency and electrode size is limited by the emergence of plasma radial nonuniformity detrimental for applications. The nonuniformity is caused by interactions of surface waves natural to the plasma-filled reactor with electrons of the plasma, leading to the complex electron energization and ionization dynamics. Using a self-consistent fully electromagnetic energy- and charge-conserving implicit particle-in-cell code ECCOPIC2M, we demonstrate that the electron energization and ionization profiles result from an involved interplay between different phenomena, demanding a kinetic and non-local description for the low pressures considered. Changes in the surface wave excitation with the driving frequency are discussed.

Abstract

The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. The goal of the roadmap is to document the collective view of the field on the next steps for the R&D programme, and to provide the evidence base to support subsequent decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and implementation., Comment: 270 pages, 58 figures. Abstract

Dominant unsustainable consumption patterns in developed countries have led to increasing climate and biodiversity issues. Through consumption-based accounting, at least 70% of the environmental footprint (carbon emissions, blue water extraction, resource use, and land use) can be attributed to food, housing, the use of appliances, and transport. Total consumption of dominant consumer goods such as clothing and electronics is only on the rise, also leading to increasing levels of waste. Given these adverse trends, and the key role of business in society, this chapter focuses on a potential positive role by business and investigates the following question: Can business have a positive role in supporting or even driving sustainable consumption, and if so, how? First, a Business for Sufficiency framework is introduced – based on the top strategies in the waste hierarchy and the four “lessens” – to map possible business-driven strategies. Second, this framework is applied to the sectors of food, housing, appliances, and transport. Based on this analysis, it was found that business indeed has a plethora of options, including green alternatives, service-driven business models, platforms, and strategies to moderate consumption. However, green alternatives were most prevalent. While some businesses also operate in the refuse (do not overconsume) option, it is likely that new policies are needed to drive sustainable consumption. The EU Circular Economy Package is an important lever for policy change, but a specific focus on sufficiency may help guide even more stringent policies to curb unsustainable consumption patterns that are detrimental to the environment and ultimately society itself.

Abstract

Laser-plasma accelerators outperform current radio frequency technology in acceleration strength by orders of magnitude. Yet, enabling them to deliver competitive beam quality for demanding applications, particularly in terms of energy spread and stability, remains a major challenge. In this Letter, we propose to combine bunch decompression and active plasma dechirping for drastically improving the energy profile and stability of beams from laser-plasma accelerators. Realistic start-to-end simulations demonstrate the potential of these postacceleration phase-space manipulations for simultaneously reducing an initial energy spread and energy jitter of ∼1–2% to ≲0.1%, closing the beam-quality gap to conventional acceleration schemes.

Abstract

The present state of progress in laser wakefield acceleration encourages considering it as a practical alternative to conventional particle accelerators. A promising application would be to use a laser-plasma accelerator as an injector for a synchrotron light source. Yet, the energy spread and jitter of the laser-plasma beam pose a significant difficulty for an efficient injection. In this paper we propose a design of a prototype injector to deliver 500 MeV low-intensity electron bunches to the DESY-II electron synchrotron. The design utilizes presently available conventional accelerator technology, such as a chicane and an X-band radio frequency cavity, to reduce the energy spread and jitter of the electron beam down to a sub-per-mille level.

Abstract

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is producing a conceptual design report for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams accelerated using plasmas. EuPRAXIA will be set up as a distributed Open Innovation platform with two construction sites, one with a focus on beam-driven plasma acceleration (PWFA) and another site with a focus on laser-driven plasma acceleration (LWFA). User areas at both sites will provide access to FEL pilot experiments, positron generation and acceleration, compact radiation sources, and test beams for HEP detector development. Support centres in four different countries will complement the pan-European implementation of this infrastructure., Proceedings of the 10th Int. Abstract

This Letter of Intent describes LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that aims to use the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL and a powerful laser. The scientific objective of the experiment is to study quantum electrodynamics processes in the regime of strong fields. High-energy electrons, accelerated by the European XFEL linear accelerator, and high-energy photons, produced via Bremsstrahlung of those beam electrons, colliding with a laser beam shall experience an electric field up to three times larger than the Schwinger critical field (the field at which the vacuum itself is expected to become unstable and spark with spontaneous creation of electron-positron pairs) and access a new regime of quantum physics. The processes to be investigated, which include nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production, are relevant to a variety of phenomena in Nature, e.g. in the areas of astrophysics and collider physics and complement recent results in atomic physics. The setup requires in particular the extraction of a minute fraction of the electron bunches from the European XFEL accelerator, the installation of a powerful laser with sophisticated diagnostics, and an array of precision detectors optimised to measure electrons, positrons and photons. Physics sensitivity projections based on simulations are also provided.

20. Compact Multistage Plasma-Based Accelerator Design for Correlated Energy Spread Compensation

Abstract

Physical review letters 123(5), 054801 (2019). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.123.054801, The extreme electromagnetic fields sustained by plasma-based accelerators could drastically reduce the size and cost of future accelerator facilities. However, they are also an inherent source of correlated energy spread in the produced beams, which severely limits the usability of these devices. We propose here to split the acceleration process into two plasma stages joined by a magnetic chicane in which the energy correlation induced in the first stage is inverted such that it can be naturally compensated in the second. Simulations of a particular 1.5-m-long setup show that 5.5 GeV beams with relative energy spreads of $1.2 × 10^{−3}$ (total) and $2.8 × 10^{−4}$ (slice) could be achieved while preserving a submicron emittance. Abstract

The extreme electromagnetic fields sustained by plasma-based accelerators allow for energy gain rates above 100 GeV/m but are also an inherent source of correlated energy spread. This severely limits the usability of these devices. Here we propose a novel compact concept which compensates the induced energy correlation by combining plasma accelerating stages with a magnetic chicane. Particle-in-cell and tracking simulations of a particular 1.5 m-long setup with two plasma stages show that 5.5 GeV bunches with a final relative energy spread of $1.2\times10^{-3}$ (total) and $5.5\times10^{-4}$ (slice) could be achieved while preserving sub-micron emittance. This at least one order of magnitude below current state-of-the-art and paves the way towards applications such as Free-Electron Lasers.

Abstract

The capability of Free-Electron Lasers to generate photon beams with record performances in the domain of MeV-class photon energy for nuclear photonics applications is here analyzed. We discuss possible nuclear FEL working points. Some typical situations are presented and simulated by means of the three-dimensional code GENESIS 1.3. The losses by spontaneous emission and by wakefield induced energy spread are then evaluated. The calculations show the possibility of generating FEL radiation at 1-4 MeV with less than 300 eV of bandwidth with not prohibitive set up requirements, achieving therefore regimes where no other kind of gamma ray sources could arrive.

Abstract

International audience; Self-modulation of an electron beam in a plasma has been observed. The propagation of a long (several plasma wavelengths) electron bunch in an overdense plasma resulted in the production of multiple bunches via the self-modulation instability. Using a combination of a radio-frequency deflector and a dipole spectrometer, the time and energy structure of the self-modulated beam was measured. The longitudinal phase space measurement showed the modulation of a long electron bunch into three bunches with an approximately 200 keV/c amplitude momentum modulation. Demonstrating this effect is a breakthrough for proton-driven plasma accelerator schemes aiming to utilize the same physical effect.

Abstract

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ("European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications") is preparing a conceptual design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. Abstract

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ("European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications") is preparing a conceptual design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. EuPRAXIA started in November 2015 and will deliver the design report in October 2019. EuPRAXIA aims to be included on the ESFRI roadmap in 2020.

Abstract

In the Beam Delivery Systems (BDS) for linear colliders that have been designed or built, collimators (or scrapers) are used to suppress backgrounds due to the beam halo. Off-energy and off-axis particles are stopped on the collimator jaws, physically limiting the acceptance of the system. This concept does not scale well to higher beam energy, higher intensity or lower emittance. The increased beam density requires longer and more demanding collimator regions. In contrast, this paper studies the possibility of inserting non-linear optical elements into the Final Focus in order to effectively increase the acceptance of the system. This technique could make the traditional collimation scheme obsolete so that only protection collimators would be needed.

Abstract

Plasma-based accelerators offer the possibility to drive future compact light sources and high-energy physics applications. Achieving good beam quality, especially a small beam energy spread, is still one of the major challenges. For stable transport, the beam is located in the focusing region of the wakefield which covers only the slope of the accelerating field. This, however, imprints a longitudinal energy correlation (chirp) along the bunch. Here, we propose an alternating focusing scheme in the plasma to mitigate the development of this chirp and thus maintain a small energy spread.

Abstract

The self modulation of long particle beams in a plasma has recently gained interest in light of the ongoing preparation for the plasma wakefield acceleration experiment of the AWAKE collaboration at CERN. Instrumental to the experiment is the self modulation of a proton beam to generate bunches short enough for producing high acceleration fields. As electron bunches are easier to handle and the underlying physics is identical, it is judicious to first gain insight into the experimental conditions of the self modulation of long particle beams in plasma by using electron bunches before progressing to the experiment with proton bunches. The experimental demonstration of self modulation of an electron bunch is in preparation at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, location Zeuthen PITZ . In this contribution the fabrication and first experimental tests towards a Lithium plasma cell are highlighted. The distinctive feature of this plasma cell is the addition of side ports for insertion of the ionization laser beam and for diagnostics purposes

Abstract

The European XFEL will operate nominally at 17.5 GeV in SP (short pulse) mode with 0.65 ms long bunch train and 10 Hz repetition rate. A possible upgrade of the linac to CW (continuous wave) or LP (long pulse) modes with a corresponding reduction of electron beam energy is under discussion since many years. Recent successes in the dedicated R&D program allow to forecast a technical feasibility of such an upgrade in the foreseeable future. One of the challenges is to provide sub-Angstrom FEL operation in CW and LP modes. In this paper we perform a preliminary analysis of a possible operation of the European XFEL in the hard X-ray regime in CW and LP modes with the energies of 7 GeV and 10 GeV, respectively. We consider lasing in the baseline XFEL undulator as well as in a new undulator with a reduced period. We show that, with reasonable requirements on electron beam quality, lasing on the fundamental will be possible in sub-Angstrom regime. As an option for generation of brilliant photon beams at short wavelengths we also consider harmonic lasing that has recently attracted a significant attention.
