Objective: To develop a well-detailed and reproducible tooth segmentation method, when quantifying tooth volumetric measurements is needed. Material and Methods: This was an in vitro study in which lower incisors and canines of five patients were 3D reconstructed by means of an automatic segmentation with manual refinements process. All the images were obtained using a 0.3-mm voxel size CBCT imaging. The software utilized was the ITK-SNAP®. The primary outcomes were the intra-rater and inter-rater reliabilities and the respective measurement errors. Results: The intra-rater reliability was excellent, with a mean measurement error of 4.16%. The inter-rater reliability was good, with a mean measurement error of 7.11%. Accuracy assessment was not possible, as the assessed teeth were not extracted. Conclusions: Although the described method is reliable, tooth volumetric error measurements may become significant, depending on the assessed situation. RESUMO Objetivo: Desenvolver um método de segmentação dentária bem detalhado e reprodutível, para quando for necessário quantificar as medidas volumétricas dos dentes. Material e Métodos: Esse foi um estudo in vitro no qual incisivos inferiores e caninos de cinco pacientes foram reconstruídos em 3D por meio de um processo de segmentação automática com refinamentos manuais. Todas as imagens de TCFC foram obtidas usando tamanho de voxel de 0,3 mm. O software utilizado foi o ITK-SNAP®. Os resultados primários foram as confiabilidades intra-avaliadores e interavaliadores e os respectivos erros de medição. Resultados: A confiabilidade intra-avaliador foi excelente, com erro médio de medição de 4,16%. A confiabilidade interavaliadores foi boa, com erro médio de medição de 7,11%. A avaliação da precisão não foi possível, pois os dentes avaliados não foram extraídos. A quantum register coupled to a spin-photon interface is a key component in quantum communication and information processing. Group-IV color centers in diamond (SiV, GeV, and SnV) are promising candidates for this application, comprising an electronic spin with optical transitions coupled to a nuclear spin as the quantum register. However, the creation of a quantum register for these color centers with deterministic and strong coupling to the spin-photon interface remains challenging. Here, we make first-principles predictions of the hyperfine parameters of the group-IV color centers, which we verify experimentally with a comprehensive comparison between the spectra of spin active and spin neutral intrinsic dopant nuclei in single GeV and SnV emitters. In line with the theoretical predictions, detailed spectroscopy on large sample sizes reveals that hyperfine coupling causes a splitting of the optical transition of SnV an order of magnitude larger than the optical linewidth and provides a magnetic-field insensitive transition. This strong coupling provides access to a new regime for quantum registers in diamond color centers, opening avenues for novel spin-photon entanglement and quantum sensing schemes for these well-studied emitters.

Realizing a quantum network will require long-lived quantum memories with optical interfaces incorporated into a scalable architecture. Color centers quantum emitters in diamond have emerged as a promising memory modality due to their optical properties and compatibility with scalable integration. However, developing a scalable color center emitter module requires significant advances in the areas of heterogeneous integration and cryogenically compatible packaging. Here we report on a cryogenically stable and network compatible quantum-emitter module for memory use. A central goal in creating long-distance quantum networks and distributed quantum computing is the development of interconnected and individually controlled qubit nodes. Atom-like emitters in diamond have emerged as a leading system for optically networked quantum memories, motivating the development of visible-spectrum, multi-channel photonic integrated circuit (PIC) systems for scalable atom control. However, it has remained an open challenge to realize optical programmability with a qubit layer that can achieve high optical detection probability over many optical channels. Here, we address this problem by introducing a modular architecture of piezoelectrically-actuated atom-control PICs (APICs) and artificial atoms embedded in diamond nanostructures designed for high-efficiency free-space collection. The high-speed 4-channel APIC is based on a splitting tree mesh with triple-phase shifter Mach-Zehnder interferometers. This design simultaneously achieves optically broadband operation at visible wavelengths, high-fidelity switching ($> 40$ dB) at low voltages, sub-$μ$s modulation timescales ($> 30$ MHz), and minimal channel-to-channel crosstalk for repeatable optical pulse carving. Via a reconfigurable free-space interconnect, we use the APIC to address single silicon vacancy color centers in individual diamond waveguides with inverse tapered couplers, achieving efficient single photon detection probabilities (15$\%$) and second-order autocorrelation measurements $g^{(2)}(0) < 0.14$ for all channels. The modularity of this distributed APIC - quantum memory system simplifies the quantum control problem, potentially enabling further scaling to 1000s of channels.

Marginalized groups are exposed to disproportionately high levels of air pollution. In this context, robust evaluations of the heterogeneous health impacts of air pollution regulations are key to justifying and designing maximally protective future interventions. Such evaluations are complicated by two key issues: 1) much of air pollution regulatory policy is focused on intervening on large emissions generators while resulting health impacts are measured in exposed populations; 2) due to air pollution transport, an intervention on one emissions generator can impact geographically distant communities. In causal inference, such a scenario has been described as that of bipartite network interference (BNI). To our knowledge, no literature to date has considered how to estimate heterogeneous causal effects with BNI. First, we propose, implement, and evaluate causal estimators for subgroup-specific treatment effects via augmented inverse propensity weighting and G-computation methods in the context of BNI. Second, we design and implement an empirical Monte Carlo simulation approach for BNI through which we evaluate the performance of the proposed estimators. Third, we use the proposed methods to estimate the causal effects of flue gas desulfurization scrubber installations on coal-fired power plants on ischemic heart disease hospitalizations among 27,312,190 Medicare beneficiaries residing across 29,034 U.S. ZIP codes. While we find no statistically significant effect of scrubbers in the full population, we do find protective effects in marginalized groups. For high-poverty and predominantly non-white ZIP codes, scrubber installations at their most influential power plants, when less-influential plants are untreated, are found to result in statistically significant decreases in IHD hospitalizations, with reduction ranging from 6.4 to 43.1 hospitalizations per 10,000 person-years.

Einleitung: Die International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) definiert Schmerz als eine unangenehme sensorische und emotionale Erfahrung, die mit einer tatsächlichen oder drohenden Gewebeschädigung verbunden ist. 10-50% der Patient*innen leiden nach einer Operation an Schmerzen, die je nach Operationsart und -größe unterschiedlich stark sein können. Postoperative Schmerzen können beträchtliche Folgen nach sich ziehen, zum Beispiel Bildung von Thromben, Pneumonien, Wundheilungsstörungen, uvm., die zu einer erhöhten Komplikationsrate und somit zu einem verlängerten Krankenhausaufenthalt führen. Pflegepersonen nehmen in der Betreuung und Behandlung von postoperativen Schmerzen eine wesentliche Rolle ein. Methodik: Von Dezember 2022 bis April 2023 wurde in den Datenbanken PubMed, Springer Link, Science Direct und Google Scholar eine systematische Literaturrecherche durchgeführt. Auf Basis dieser Recherche wurden die Studienergebnisse von zwölf Studien synthetisiert. Ergebnisse: Die Ergebnisse konnten in 3 Hauptkategorien und 9 Unterkategorien synthetisiert werden. Fachwissen, Kenntnisse sowie Fähigkeiten zur Schmerzbehandlung, einschließlich der pharmakologischer und nicht- pharmakologischer Methoden, und das richtige Schmerzassessment sind die wichtigsten Kompetenzen des Pflegepersonals. Eine weitere Kernkompetenz ist auch die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Disziplinen um eine umfassende Versorgung der Patient*innen zu gewährleisten. Postoperative pain can have significant consequences, such as thrombus formation, pneumonia, wound healing problems, etc., leading to an increased complication rate and thus to a prolonged hospital stay. Nurses play an essential role in the care and management of post-operative pain. Methodology: From December 2022 to April 2023, a systematic literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Springer Link, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases. The systematic literature search synthesized the study results of twelve studies. Results: The results could be synthesized into 3 main categories and 9 subcategories. Expertise, knowledge and skills in pain management, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods, and proper pain assessment are the most important competencies of nurses. Another core competence is also interdisciplinary cooperation with other disciplines to ensure comprehensive care of patients. Conclusion: It is important that nurses are informed and trained about the importance of pain management and interdisciplinary collaboration as this can improve patient outcomes. To provide appropriate post-operative pain management, nurses need a variety of skills. There is an opportunity to improve patient outcomes through increased education and interdisciplinary collaboration.

A contemporary challenge for the scalability of quantum networks is developing quantum nodes with simultaneous high photonic efficiency and long-lived qubits. Here, we present a fibre-packaged nanophotonic diamond waveguide hosting a tin-vacancy centre with a spin-1/2 $^{117}$Sn nucleus. The interaction between the electronic and nuclear spins results in a signature 452(7) MHz hyperfine splitting. This exceeds the natural optical linewidth by a factor of 16, enabling direct optical nuclear-spin initialisation with 98.6(3)% fidelity and single-shot readout with 80(1)% fidelity. The waveguide-to-fibre extraction efficiency of our device of 57(6)% enables the practical detection of 5-photon events. Combining the photonic performance with the optically initialised nuclear spin, we demonstrate a spin-gated single-photon nonlinearity with 11(1)% contrast in the absence of an external magnetic field. These capabilities position our nanophotonic interface as a versatile quantum node in the pursuit of scalable quantum networks.

The current surgical training paradigm in the United States is shifting to a competency-based system. Artificial Intelligence (AI) also can assist in competency-based learning by eliminating biases that may exist in surgical coaching and training. This scoping review aims to examine studies (1) that evaluate implementation and/or bias of AI in surgical videos (2) studies examining user acceptance of this technology for surgical training or coaching, and (3) studies examining the impact on surgical outcomes with the use of AI applied to surgical videos. Our approach will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines and checklist. Results will be charted and synthesized to understand outcomes.

Gallium nitride (GaN), as a promising alternative semiconductor to silicon, is of well-established use in photoelectronic and electronic technology. However, the vulnerable GaN surface has been a critical restriction that hinders the development of GaN-based devices, especially regarding device stability and reliability. Here, we overcome this challenge by converting the GaN surface into a gallium oxynitride (GaON) epitaxial nanolayer through an in-situ two-step "oxidation-reconfiguration" process. The oxygen plasma treatment overcomes the chemical inertness of the GaN surface, and the sequential thermal annealing manipulates the kinetic-thermodynamic reaction pathways to create a metastable GaON nanolayer with wurtzite lattice. This GaN-derived GaON nanolayer is a tailored structure for surface reinforcement and possesses several advantages, including wide bandgap, high thermodynamic stability, and large valence band offset with GaN substrate. These enhanced physical properties can be further leveraged to enable GaN-based applications in new scenarios, such as complementary logic integrated circuits, photoelectrochemical water splitting, and ultraviolet photoelectric conversion, making GaON a versatile functionality extender., 13 pages, 6 figures, submitted under review

Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), the capacity of the brain to increase cerebral blood flow (CBF) to meet changes in physiological demand, is an important biomarker to evaluate brain health. Typically, this brain "stress test" is performed by using a medical imaging modality to measure the CBF change between two states: at baseline and after vasodilation. However, since there are many imaging modalities and many ways to augment CBF, a wide range of CVR values have been reported. An understanding of CVR reproducibility is critical to determine the most reliable methods to measure CVR as a clinical biomarker. This review focuses on CVR reproducibility studies using neuroimaging techniques in 32 articles comprising 427 total subjects. The literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. The review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). We identified 5 factors of the experimental subjects (such as sex, blood characteristics, and smoking) and 9 factors of the measuring technique (such as the imaging modality, the type of the vasodilator, and the quantification method) that have strong effects on CVR reproducibility. Based on this review, we recommend several best practices to improve the reproducibility of CVR quantification in neuroimaging studies.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare and aggressive tumor that typically arises in the long bones of the extremities. It belongs in the family of small round blue cell tumors and is characterized immunohistochemically by diffuse CD99 expression and molecularly by one of several oncogenic translocations, most commonly t(11;22)(q24;q12) between the EWSR1 gene and the FLI1 gene. Here we present a rare case of Ewing’s sarcoma in the sinonasal tract with FUS-ERG gene arrangement that was regarded for almost a decade as a sinonasal-type hemangiopericytoma (glomangiopericytoma). This case illustrates the surprisingly prolonged natural history of Ewing’s sarcoma that did not receive therapy for many years and the importance of considering alternative genetic translocations. Our experience suggests that the presence of diffuse CD99 membranous staining pattern in a small blue round cell tumor with morphology typical for Ewing’s sarcoma but FISH negative for EWSR1 rearrangement should prompt consideration of FUS-ERG fusion.

In this paper, we construct Janus-type solutions of three-dimensional gauged supergravity with sixteen supersymmetries. We find solutions which correspond to interfaces between the same CFT on both sides, as well as RG-flow interfaces between CFTs with different numbers of supersymmetries and central charges. Giovannetti, Lloyd, and Maccone [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 160501] proposed a quantum random access memory (QRAM) architecture to retrieve arbitrary superpositions of $N$ (quantum) memory cells via $O(\log(N))$ quantum switches and $O(\log(N))$ address qubits. Towards physical QRAM implementations, Chen et al. [PRX Quantum 2, 030319] recently showed that QRAM maps natively onto optically connected quantum networks with $O(\log(N))$ overhead and built-in error detection. However, modeling QRAM on large networks has been stymied by exponentially rising classical compute requirements. Here, we address this bottleneck by: (i) introducing a resource-efficient method for simulating large-scale noisy entanglement, allowing us to evaluate hundreds and even thousands of qubits under various noise channels; and (ii) analyzing Chen et al.'s network-based QRAM as an application at the scale of quantum data centers or near-term quantum internet; and (iii) introducing a modified network-based QRAM architecture to improve quantum fidelity and access rate. A central goal in many quantum information processing applications is a network of quantum memories that can be entangled with each other while being individually controlled and measured with high fidelity. This goal has motivated the development of programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) with integrated spin quantum memories using diamond color center spin-photon interfaces. However, this approach introduces a challenge in the microwave control of individual spins within closely packed registers. Here, we present a quantum-memory-integrated photonics platform capable of (i) the integration of multiple diamond color center spins into a cryogenically compatible, high-speed programmable PIC platform; (ii) selective manipulation of individual spin qubits addressed via tunable magnetic field gradients; and (iii) simultaneous control of multiple qubits using numerically optimized microwave pulse shaping. Finding the shortest path between two points in a graph is a fundamental problem that has been well-studied over the past several decades. Shortest path algorithms are commonly applied to modern navigation systems, so our study aims to improve the efficiency of an existing algorithm on large-scale Euclidean networks. The current literature lacks a deep understanding of certain algorithms' performance on these types of networks. Therefore, we incorporate a new heuristic function, called the $k$-step look-ahead, into the A* search algorithm and conduct a computational experiment to evaluate and compare the results on road networks of varying sizes. Our main findings are that this new heuristic yields a significant improvement in runtime, particularly for larger networks when compared to standard A*, as well as that a higher value of $k$ is needed to achieve optimal efficiency as network size increases. Future research can build upon this work by implementing a program that automatically chooses an optimal $k$ value given an input network. Solid-state quantum emitters have emerged as a leading quantum memory for quantum networking applications. However, standard optical characterization techniques are neither efficient nor repeatable at scale. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate spectroscopic techniques that enable large-scale, automated characterization of color centers. We first demonstrate the ability to track color centers by registering them to a fabricated machine-readable global coordinate system, enabling systematic comparison of the same color center sites over many experiments. We then implement resonant photoluminescence excitation in a widefield cryogenic microscope to parallelize resonant spectroscopy, achieving two orders of magnitude speed-up over confocal microscopy. Finally, we demonstrate automated chip-scale characterization of color centers and devices at room temperature, imaging thousands of microscope fields of view. Odontogenic tumors show considerable morphologic heterogeneity and at times the diagnosis can be challenging. Ameloblastoma, the most common odontogenic tumor, can have morphological similarity to some salivary gland tumors and therefore we sought to identify biomarkers that might aid in the diagnosis by performing transcriptome wide gene expression profiling of 80 odontogenic and salivary gland neoplasms. These data identified the FOXP1+/SOX10− expression profile as characteristic of many odontogenic tumors including ameloblastoma but largely absent in salivary gland tumors. We then assessed 173 salivary gland tumors and 108 odontogenic tumors by immunohistochemistry for FOXP1 and SOX10 expression and found that 34/35 (97%) cases of ameloblastomas were diffusely positive for FOXP1 but completely negative for SOX10. None of the basaloid salivary neoplasms (basal cell adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, polymorphous adenocarcinoma, and myoepitheloma) demonstrated FOXP1+/SOX10− expression pattern. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that the FOXP1+/SOX10− immunophenotype is common in odontogenic tumors including ameloblastoma and might be useful distinguishing these from similar appearing basaloid salivary gland tumors.

We study the problem of learning a range of vision-based manipulation tasks from a large offline dataset of robot interaction. In order to accomplish this, humans need easy and effective ways of specifying tasks to the robot. Goal images are one popular form of task specification, as they are already grounded in the robot's observation space. However, goal images also have a number of drawbacks: they are inconvenient for humans to provide, they can over-specify the desired behavior leading to a sparse reward signal, or under-specify task information in the case of non-goal reaching tasks. Natural language provides a convenient and flexible alternative for task specification, but comes with the challenge of grounding language in the robot's observation space. To scalably learn this grounding we propose to leverage offline robot datasets (including highly sub-optimal, autonomously collected data) with crowd-sourced natural language labels. With this data, we learn a simple classifier which predicts if a change in state completes a language instruction. This provides a language-conditioned reward function that can then be used for offline multi-task RL. In our experiments, we find that on language-conditioned manipulation tasks our approach outperforms both goal-image specifications and language conditioned imitation techniques by more than 25%, and is able to perform visuomotor tasks from natural language, such as "open the right drawer" and "move the stapler", on a Franka Emika Panda robot., Comment: Conference on Robot Learning (CoRL) 2021. 24 Pages, 18 Figures
