Background: Swimmers commonly access performance metrics such as lap splits, distance, and pacing information between work bouts while they rest. Recently, a new category of tracking devices for swimming was introduced with the FORM Smart Swim Goggles (FORM Goggles). The goggles have a built-in see-through display and are capable of tracking and displaying distance, time splits, stroke, and pace metrics in real time using machine learning and augmented reality through a heads-up display. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the FORM Goggles compared with video analysis for stroke type, pool length count, pool length time, stroke rate, and stroke count in recreational swimmers and triathletes.Method: A total of 36 participants performed mixed swimming intervals in a 25-m pool across two identical 900-m swim sessions performed at comparable intensities with 1 week interval. The participants wore FORM Goggles during their swims, which detected the following five swim metrics: stroke type, pool length time, pool length count, stroke count, and stroke rate. Four video cameras were positioned on the pool edges to capture ground truth video footage, which was then manually labeled by three trained individuals. Mean (SD) differences between FORM Goggles and ground truth were calculated for the selected metrics for both sessions. The absolute mean difference and mean absolute percentage error were used to assess the differences of the FORM Goggles relative to ground truth. The test–retest reliability of the goggles was assessed using both relative and absolute reliability metrics.Results: Compared with video analysis, the FORM Goggles identified the correct stroke type at a rate of 99.7% (N = 2,354 pool lengths, p Conclusion: The FORM Goggles were found valid and reliable for the tracking of pool length time, pool length count, stroke count, stroke rate, and stroke type during freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke swimming in recreational swimmers and triathletes when compared with video analysis. This opens perspectives for receiving real-time information on performance metrics during swimming.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) quantifies muscle oxygenation (SmO2) during exercise. Muscle oxygenation response to self-paced, severe-intensity cycling remains unclear. Observing SmO2 can provide cycling professionals with the ability to assess muscular response, helping optimize decision-making. We aimed to describe the effect of self-paced severe intensity bouts on SmO2, measured noninvasively by a wearable NIRS sensor on the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle, and examine its reliability. We hypothesized a greater desaturation response with each bout, whereas, between trials, good reliability would be observed. Fourteen recreationally trained, and trained cyclists completed a ramp test to determine the power output (PO) at the respiratory compensation point (RCP). Athletes completed two subsequent visits of 50-minute sessions that included four severe-intensity bouts done at 5% above RCP PO. Muscle oxygenation in the VL was monitored using a wearable NIRS device. Measures included mean PO, heart-rate (HR), cadence, and SmO2 at bout onset, during work (work SmO2), and ΔSmO2. The bouts were compared using a one-way repeated measures ANOVA. For significant differences, a Fisher's least square difference post-hoc analysis was used. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used using trial and bout as main factors. Intraclass correlations (ICC) were used to quantify relative reliability for mean work, and standard error of the measurement (SEM) was used to quantify absolute agreement of mean work SmO2. Both PO and cadence showed no effect of bout or trial. Heart-rate at bout 2 (168 ± 8 bpm) and 4 (170 ± 7 bpm) were higher than bout 1 (160 ± 6 bpm). Onset SmO2 (%) response significantly increased in the final two bouts of the session. Mean work SmO2 increased across bouts, with the highest value displayed in bout 4 (36 ± 22%). ΔSmO2 showed a smaller desaturation response during bout 4 (27 ± 10%) compared to bout 3 (31 ± 10%). Mean work SmO2 ICC showed good reliability (ICC = 0.87), and SEM was 12% (CI 9-15%). We concluded that a non-invasive, affordable, wearable NIRS sensor demonstrated the heterogeneous muscle oxygenation response during severe intensity cycling bouts with good reliability in trained cyclists.

The rise of exascale supercomputers has fueled competition among GPU vendors, driving lattice QCD developers to write code that supports multiple APIs. Moreover, new developments in algorithms and physics research require frequent updates to existing software. These challenges have to be balanced against constantly changing personnel. At the same time, there is a wide range of applications for HISQ fermions in QCD studies. This situation encourages the development of software featuring a HISQ action that is flexible, high-performing, open source, easy to use, and easy to adapt. In this technical paper, we explain the design strategy, provide implementation details, list available algorithms and modules, and show key performance indicators for SIMULATeQCD, a simple multi-GPU lattice code for large-scale QCD calculations, mainly developed and used by the HotQCD collaboration. Transactions of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, 28, 17-47, The purpose of these notes is to provide the first instalment of what is hoped will be an annual chronicle of archreological work in the county. They are compiled from material in the files of the Department of Antiquities in the Museum, where we are endeavouring to build up a complete record of Leicestershire's archreological history. Incidental finds are not normally included, since they are recorded in the Annual Report of the Museums and Libraries Committee, and active plans are in hand for producing catalogues of the collections and other known local material within the next three to five years. We venture to add that the Museum has a high reputation for its recording system and we should like to be regarded as the repository for all information regarding the archreology of the county and also for the finds themselves, since only so can their provenience, which is what usually matters most, be guaranteed.

In this short paper I discuss a day spent with a group of students in Glen Almond, Perthshire, in 2018. As I write this now, in 2021, I have the opportunity to situate my present thinking in the story and to think with the idea of a political ecology of ecologies, derived from an immanent ethics. I speculate that competing ecologies are themselves ecological as they perform materially in the world, and that creative research of the everyday enactments of multiple ecologies provides a form of critical environmental and social education.

Large-scale human genetic data1-3 have shown that cancer mutations display strong tissue-selectivity, but how this selectivity arises remains unclear. Here, using experimental models, functional genomics and analyses of patient samples, we demonstrate that the lineage transcription factor paired box 8 (PAX8) is required for oncogenic signalling by two common genetic alterations that cause clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) in humans: the germline variant rs7948643 at 11q13.3 and somatic inactivation of the von Hippel-Lindau tumour suppressor (VHL)4-6. VHL loss, which is observed in about 90% of ccRCCs, can lead to hypoxia-inducible factor 2α (HIF2A) stabilization6,7. We show that HIF2A is preferentially recruited to PAX8-bound transcriptional enhancers, including a pro-tumorigenic cyclin D1 (CCND1) enhancer that is controlled by PAX8 and HIF2A. The ccRCC-protective allele C at rs7948643 inhibits PAX8 binding at this enhancer and downstream activation of CCND1 expression. Co-option of a PAX8-dependent physiological programme that supports the proliferation of normal renal epithelial cells is also required for MYC expression from the ccRCC metastasis-associated amplicons at 8q21.3-q24.3 (ref. 8). These results demonstrate that transcriptional lineage factors are essential for oncogenic signalling and that they mediate tissue-specific cancer risk associated with somatic and inherited genetic variants., Medical Research Council (MC_UU_12022/7 and MC_UU_12022/10) and Kidney Research UK (RP_033_20170303).

The goal of this chapter is to assess research that can inform understandings of places and spaces of learning. The chapter assesses evidence across three types of learning spaces: built spaces, digital spaces, and natural spaces. It looks at the role of these different kinds of spaces for learning, attainment, interpersonal relationships, skills development, wellbeing and behaviours ‒ across four pillars of learning to know, to be, to do and to live together. The chapter also explores how learning spaces can be actively shaped, felt and understood through practices and policies that occur within and around them.

Various approaches to first-in-human (FIH) starting dose selection for new molecular entities (NMEs) are designed to minimize risk to trial subjects. One approach uses the minimum anticipated biological effect level (MABEL), which is a conservative method intended to maximize subject safety and designed primarily for NMEs having high perceived safety risks. However, there is concern that the MABEL approach is being inappropriately used for lower risk molecules with negative impacts on drug development and time to patient access. In addition, ambiguity exists in how MABEL is defined and the methods used to determine it. The International Consortium for Innovation and Quality in Pharmaceutical Development convened a working group to understand current use of MABEL and its impact on FIH starting dose selection, and to make recommendations for FIH dose selection going forward. An industry-wide survey suggested the achieved or estimated maximum tolerated dose, efficacious dose, or recommended phase II dose was > 100-fold higher than the MABEL-based starting dose for approximately one third of NMEs, including trials in patients. A decision tree and key risk factor table were developed to provide a consistent, data driven-based, and risk-based approach for selecting FIH starting doses.

Prioritizing resource allocation for mitigating the environmental impacts of invasive alien species is necessary given continued species introductions. Focusing on environmental impacts, this thesis used bottom-up and top-down perspectives for improving invasive alien insect species prioritization. Uncertainty in environmental impact assessment outcomes was identified, classified, and subsequently distilled into a set of recommendations. Environmental impacts of invasive alien insects varied both geographically and taxonomically. Furthermore, many high-priority sites in Australia were identified as at risk from invasive alien insect species. This work provides information, and demonstrates a site identification approach, for implementing effective prioritization and management of biological invasions.

We introduce a number of techniques in quantitative convergent-beam electron diffraction under development by our group and discuss the basis for measuring interatomic electrostatic potentials (and therefore also electron densities), localised at sub-nanometre scales, with sufficient accuracy and precision to map chemical bonds in and around nanostructures in nanostructured materials. This has never been possible as experimental measurements of bonding have always been restricted to homogeneous single-phased crystals., 11 pages, 4 figures

We report on an ongoing study on the interplay between Roberge-Weiss (RW) and chiral transitions in simulations of (2+1)-flavor QCD with an imaginary chemical potential. We established that the RW endpoint belongs to the 3-$d$, $Z_2$ universality class when calculations are done with the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action in the RW plane with physical quark masses. We also have explored a range of quark masses corresponding to pion mass values, $m_\pi\geq40$~MeV and found that the transition is consistent with $Z_2$ universality class. We argue that observables that were usually used to determine the chiral phase transition temperature, e.g. the chiral condensate and chiral susceptibility, are sensitive to the RW transition and are energy-like observables for the $Z_2$ transition, contrary to the magnetic-like (order parameter) behavior at vanishing chemical potential. We present $\texttt{SIMULATeQCD}$, HotQCD's software for performing lattice QCD calculations on GPUs. Started in late 2017 and intended as a full replacement of the previous single GPU lattice QCD code used by the HotQCD collaboration, our software has been developed into an extensive framework for lattice QCD calculations distributed on multiple GPUs over many compute nodes. The code is built on C++, CUDA, and MPI and leverages modern C++ language features to provide high-level data structures, objects, and algorithms that allow users to express lattice QCD calculations in an intuitive way without sacrificing performance. Implemented algorithms range from gradient flow, correlator measurements, and mixed precision conjugate gradient solvers all the way to full HISQ gauge field configuration generation using RHMC. After successful deployment in large-scale computing projects, we want to share the result of our efforts with the lattice QCD community by making it publicly available. Following the establishment of folklore as a concept and discipline in the nineteenth century, the idea of the region, as opposed to the nation, emerged as the dominant geography of scholarly discourse. This chapter examines how regional identity was established in Hallamshire, a district within the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria, which forms much of the Sheffield city region in present-day South Yorkshire. Today Hallam lives on in place names, including the university, the constituency and other modern institutions, and its legends and folklore have become part of its intangible cultural heritage. The folklore of Hallamshire was constructed upon the stories of two folk heroes: Waltheof—the last Saxon Earl—and Robin Hood, whose birthplace was recorded in a seventeenth-century document at Loxley, within the city boundary. Both were portrayed, in Victorian and more recent antiquarian literature, as Anglo-Saxon heroes who resisted conquerors. They continue to function as symbols of the radical spirit of the region in the form of Saxon against Norman and, in more recent history, north against south. The manipulation and, in some cases, outright invention of folklore as resistance against national authority led King George III to refer to Sheffield as ‘a damned bad place.’

Background Sedentary behaviour has been the focus of considerable clinical, policy and research interest due to its detrimental effects on health and wellbeing. This systematic review aims to (1) develop a more precise description of different categories of interventions that aim to reduce sedentary time in adults by identifying specific components that form an intervention; (2) explore the effect of different categories of interventions in reducing time spent sedentary in adults.Methods Ten electronic databases, websites of relevant organisations (e.g. the Sedentary Behaviour Research Network), and relevant reviews were searched. Inclusion criteria: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), including cluster and randomised cross-over trials, in the adult population (clinical and non-clinical). Any study including a measure of sedentary behaviour was included even if reducing sedentary behaviour was not the primary aim. Exclusion criteria: Interventions delivered in schools, colleges, or workplaces; studies investigating the immediate effects of breaking up sitting time as part of a supervised (usually laboratory-based) intervention. Two review authors conducted data extraction and quality assessment (GRADE approach).Results Searches identified 39,223 records, of which 85 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Interventions shown to significantly reduce time spent sedentary were those which incorporated the provision of information, education, or support (advice/recommendations), in conjunction with either counselling (mean difference: -52.24 minutes/day; 95% CI: -85.37 to -19.10) or a form of structured/prescribed physical activity (standardised mean difference: -0.15; 95% CI: -0.23 to -0.07). However, this positive effect was not maintained at follow-up. No interventions were shown to break up prolonged sitting.Conclusions This review presents a novel way of categorising interventions according to the types of components they comprised. There is evidence that interventions might be effective in reducing time spent sedentary immediately post-intervention. There were limited studies measuring sustained behaviour change.

Controlling the spatial and temporal behavior of peptide segments is essential in the fabrication of functional peptide-based materials and nanostructures. To achieve a desired structure, complex sequence design is often required, coupled with the inclusion of unnatural amino acids or synthetic modifications. Herein, we investigate the structural properties of 1:1 inclusion complexes between specific oligopeptides and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), inducing the formation of turns, and by alteration of the peptide sequence, tunable structural chirality. We also explore extended peptide sequence binding with CB[8], demonstrating a simple approach to construct a peptide hairpin.

12th International Phycological Congress, The Global Harmful Algal Blooms (GlobalHAB, www.global hab.info) Program is aimed at fostering international cooperative research directed toward improving the prediction of harmful algal bloom (HAB) events in aquatic ecosystems, and providing sound knowledge for policy- and decision-making to manage and mitigate HAB impacts in a changing planet. GlobalHAB is sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR). GlobalHAB was launched in 2016 and will last for 10 years. The GlobalHAB scientific objectives are focused on the research of taxonomic, ecological and toxicology knowledge gaps, on the effects of climate change on HABs and their biogeographic distribution, the implementation of HABs observing systems, and overall, to promote aquatic food and water safety and security. The GlobalHAB program has an international nature, and collaborates with international entities and programs that share objectives on HABs research, management and mitigation, as was already done by the former program GEOHAB. In particular, scientists from Latin America were active participants in GEOHAB and today Latin America is key in the implementation of GlobalHAB. Extreme HAB events affecting aquaculture sites and natural environments, Sargassum beachings, HABs monitoring programs, ciguatera fish poisoning, toxin transfer through the food webs, are examples of topics where scientists in Latin America are very active and thus, contribute to the implementation of GlobalHAB. Scientists are invited to participate in GlobalHAB by designing and endorsing scientific activities linked to the goals of GlobalHAB, and by participating in other international activities, The GlobalHAB (www.globalhab.info) international program is funded by IOC UNESCO and SCOR

The Polyakov loop expectation value $\langle P\rangle$ is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition in the heavy quark mass regime, whereas its sensitivity to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks is not apparent. From the perspective of an effective Lagrangian in the vicinity of the chiral transition, the Polyakov loop, $P$, is an energy-like observable, and $\langle P\rangle$ should hence scale like the energy density. Using $N_f=2+1$ HISQ configurations at finite lattice spacing, we show that near the chiral transition temperature, the scaling behavior of $\langle P\rangle$ and the heavy quark free energy $F_q$ is consistent with energy-like observables in the 3-$d$, O($N$) universality class. We extend this analysis to other Polyakov loop observables, including the response of the heavy quark free energy, $F_q$, to the baryon chemical potential, which is expected to scale like a specific heat., 10 pages, 3 figures, presented at the 38th International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory

International Symposium Human Health & the Ocean in a Changing World, 2-3 December 2020, Monte-Carlo, Monaco, The Global Harmful Algal Blooms (GlobalHAB, www.globalhab.info) programme is aimed at fostering and promoting international cooperative research directed toward improving the understanding and prediction of harmful algal blooms (HABs) events in aquatic ecosystems, and providing sound knowledge for policy- and decision-making to manage and mitigate HAB impacts in a changing planet. GlobalHAB is sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR). GlobalHAB was launched in 2016 and will last for 10 years. Among the different scientific objectives, GlobalHAB addresses in particular the impacts of HABs on Human and Animal Health. The overall aim is to increase interdisciplinary collaborations among scientists with medical, veterinary, public health, economics and social science expertise to help: I) the integration of HAB problematics in the One- and Eco-health approach, ii) understand, assess and minimize the risks of the different human and animal diseases caused by phycotoxins in marine and freshwater habitats taking advantages of other scientific expertise and collaborations. This general aim is being implemented through specific objectives, including i) the implementation of the multiagency coordinated IOC-IAEA-FAO-WHO "Global Ciguatera Strategy", ii) the improved knowledge of the ecology, physiology, toxicity and toxin transfer mechanisms of benthic microalgal toxins through marine food webs, iii) collaborations with the European Food Safety Agency to develop strategies for risk assessment of emerging phycotoxins, iv) investigation of the impacts of climate change and anthropogenically driven changes on HAB dynamics and v) fostering joint epidemiology, risk and damage assessment, and ecological studies of HABs, aligned with other initiatives in the United States and Europe. BackgroundSelf‐harm amongst young people is an increasing problem, with looked‐after young people at higher risk. Despite this, little research exists on what young people who self‐harm find helpful.MethodOne hundred and twenty‐six 11–21 year olds (53 who had experience of the care system and 73 who did not) were recruited from the community and NHS. All participants had self‐harmed in the past 6 months. Participants completed an Audio Computer‐Assisted Self‐interview (ACASI) regarding their views about the support they had received, how helpful it was, and what further help they felt they needed.ResultsLooked‐after young people reported the three most helpful sources of support were Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), friends and pets and the least helpful were CAMHS, Accident and Emergency (A&E) and Social services. For non‐looked‐after young people, CAMHS, counselling and Harmless (user‐led support service for self‐harm) were most helpful and CAMHS, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and general practitioner (GP) were the least. Compared with the other group, more looked‐after young people had received help from A&E and CAMHS, whereas more non‐looked‐after young people had accessed GPs, parents, psychological therapies, self‐help books and websites. More looked‐after young people found support groups helpful, and more non‐looked‐after young people reported that distraction techniques, medication and their siblings were helpful.ConclusionYoung people who self‐harm have mixed views about CAMHS. Differences in the pattern of access and preferences for support between looked‐after and non‐looked‐after young people should be reflected in service availability and commissioning.

This volume of essays addresses the representation of the Second World War in museums and memorials in Eastern Europe. It is the product of a research project funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, bringing together fourteen detailed accounts in German and English of the historical development of such institutions in a range of contexts, including Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and Romania. Apart from one anomalous chapter that details the development of the Dachau concentration camp memorial, the central focus of the volume is on the transition between the antifascist narrative propagated by state socialist regimes in the region to a variety of post-socialist memory cultures. These memory cultures have been determined in each case both by domestic politics in the individual countries and their respective geopolitical circumstances.
