Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) systems offer significant advantages in coverage and deployment flexibility, but suffer from endurance limitations due to the limited onboard energy. This paper proposes to improve the energy efficiency of UAV-enabled WPT systems with multiple ground sensors by utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Specifically, the total energy consumption of the UAV is minimized, while meeting the energy requirement of each sensor. Firstly, we consider a fly-hover-broadcast (FHB) protocol, in which the UAV radiates radio frequency (RF) signals only at several hovering locations. The energy minimization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the UAV's trajectory, hovering time and the RIS's reflection coefficients. To solve this complex non-convex problem, we propose an efficient algorithm. Specifically, the successive convex approximation (SCA) framework is adopted to jointly optimize the UAV's trajectory and hovering time, in which a minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm that maximizes the minimum charged energy of all sensors is provided to update the reflection coefficients. Then, we investigate the general scenario in which the RF signals are radiated during the flight, aiming to minimize the total energy consumption of the UAV by jointly optimizing the UAV's trajectory, flight time and the RIS's reflection coefficients. By applying the path discretization (PD) protocol, the optimization problem is formulated with a finite number of variables. A high-quality solution for this more challenging problem is obtained. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a revolutionary technology to enhance both the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of wireless communication systems. However, most of the existing contributions mainly focused on the study of passive RIS, which suffers from the ``double fading'' effect. On the other hand, active RIS, which is equipped with amplifiers, can effectively address this issue. In this paper, we propose an active RIS-aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. Specifically, we maximize the weighted sum rate of the information receivers, subject to the minimum power received at all energy receivers, amplification power constraint at the active RIS, and the maximum transmit power constraint at the base station (BS). By adopting alternating optimization framework, suboptimal solutions are obtained. Smart factories need to support the simultaneous communication of multiple industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) devices with ultra-reliability and low-latency communication (URLLC). Meanwhile, short packet transmission for IIoT applications incurs performance loss compared to traditional long packet transmission for human-to-human communications. On the other hand, cell-free massive multiple-input and multiple-output (CF mMIMO) technology can provide uniform services for all devices by deploying distributed access points (APs). In this paper, we adopt CF mMIMO to support URLLC in a smart factory. Specifically, we first derive the lower bound (LB) on achievable uplink data rate under the finite blocklength (FBL) with imperfect channel state information (CSI) for both maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and full-pilot zero-forcing (FZF) decoders. \textcolor{black}{The derived LB rates based on the MRC case have the same trends as the ergodic rate, while LB rates using the FZF decoder tightly match the ergodic rates}, which means that resource allocation can be performed based on the LB data rate rather the exact ergodic data rate under FBL. The \textcolor{black}{log-function method} and successive convex approximation (SCA) are then used to approximately transform the non-convex weighted sum rate problem into a series of geometric program (GP) problems, and an iterative algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the pilot and payload power allocation. Simulation results demonstrate that CF mMIMO significantly improves the average weighted sum rate (AWSR) compared to centralized mMIMO. To further preserve the data privacy of federated learning (FL), we propose a differentially private FL (DPFL) scheme with misaligned power allocation (MPA-DPFL). Unlike most existing over-the-air FL studies, in MPA-DPFL, the gradients are aggregated through over-the-air computation (Aircomp) but do not need to be aligned in the transmission. Therefore, MPA-DPFL can avoid the problem that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the system is limited by the device with the worst channel condition. We formulate an optimization problem to minimize the optimality gap of MPA-DPFL while guaranteeing a certain degree of privacy protection. Additionally, we demonstrate that the MPA-DPFL is more suitable than the DPFL with aligned power allocation (APA-DPFL) when the channel condition of a device in the system is lower than a threshold. The analytical results are validated through simulation.

This letter investigates a virtual reality (VR) delivery system, where the original VR contents requested by all users are stored at the macro base station (MBS). To reduce latency, MBS can either transmit the original VR data or the computed VR data to multiple users aided by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to prevent attacks from an eavesdropper with imperfect channel state information (CSI). We jointly optimize the transmission policies, MBS transmit power, IRS phase shift and computing frequency to minimize the latency over all users subject to security constraint. Numerical results validate the robustness of our proposed algorithm.

In this letter, the downlink transmission of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) system is investigated where the IRS elements are selected from a predefined discrete set of phase shifts. We minimize the mean square error (MSE) of the received symbols in the system via optimizing the phase shifts at the IRS jointly with beamforming vectors at the base station (BS) and equalizers at the user terminals. In order to find the optimal IRS phase shifts, a trellis-based structure is used that smartly selects the discrete phases. Moreover, for the sake of comparison, a semi-definite programming (SDP)-based discrete phase optimization is also presented. The BS beamformer and the optimal equalizers are determined via closed-form solutions. Numerical results demonstrate that the trellis-based scheme has better performance compared to other discrete IRS phase shift designs, such as SDP and quantized majorization-minimization technique, while maintaining a very low computational complexity.

In this paper, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is introduced to enhance the network performance of cognitive radio (CR) systems. Specifically, we investigate robust beamforming design based on both bounded channel state information (CSI) error model and statistical CSI error model for primary user (PU)-related channels in IRS-aided CR systems. We jointly optimize the transmit precoding (TPC) at the secondary user (SU) transmitter (ST) and phase shifts at the IRS to minimize the ST' s total transmit power subject to the quality of service of SUs, the limited interference imposed on the PU and unit-modulus of the reflective beamforming. The successive convex approximation (SCA) method, Schur's complement, General sign-definiteness principle, inverse Chi-square distribution and penalty convex-concave procedure are invoked for dealing with these intricate constraints. The non-convex optimization problems are transformed into several convex subproblems and efficient algorithms are proposed. Simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithms and reveal the impacts of CSI uncertainties on ST's minimum transmit power and feasibility rate of the optimization problems. Simulation results also show that the number of transmit antennas at the ST and the number of phase shifts at the IRS should be carefully chosen to balance the channel realization feasibility rate and the total transmit power., Accepted by IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking. In this paper, we study the transmission design for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser communication networks. Different from most of the existing contributions, we consider long-term CSI-based transmission design, where both the beamforming vectors at the base station (BS) and the phase shifts at the RIS are designed based on long-term CSI, which can significantly reduce the channel estimation overhead. Due to the lack of explicit ergodic data rate expression, we propose a novel deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based algorithm to solve the optimization problem, which was trained by using the channel vectors generated in an offline manner. Simulation results demonstrate that the achievable net throughput is higher than that achieved by the conventional instantaneous-CSI based scheme when taking the channel estimation overhead into account.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), consisting of low-cost passive elements, is a promising technology for improving the spectral and energy efficiency of the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond networks. It is also noteworthy that an IRS can shape the reflected signal propagation. Most works in IRS-assisted systems have ignored the impact of the inevitable residual hardware impairments (HWIs) at both the transceiver hardware and the IRS while any relevant works have addressed only simple scenarios, e.g., with single-antenna network nodes and/or without taking the randomness of phase noise at the IRS into account. In this work, we aim at filling up this gap by considering a general IRS-assisted multi-user (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) system with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and correlated Rayleigh fading. In parallel, we present a general computationally efficient methodology for IRS reflect beamforming (RB) optimization. Specifically, we introduce an advantageous channel estimation (CE) method for such systems accounting for the HWIs. Moreover, we derive the uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) with maximal-ratio combining (MRC) receiver, displaying three significant advantages being: 1) its closed-form expression, 2) its dependence only on large-scale statistics, and 3) its low training overhead. Notably, by exploiting the first two benefits, we achieve to perform optimization with respect to the that can take place only at every several coherence intervals, and thus, reduces significantly the computational cost compared to other methods which require frequent phase optimization. Among the insightful observations, we highlight that uncorrelated Rayleigh fading does not allow optimization of the SE, which makes the application of an IRS ineffective. Also, in the case that the phase drifts, describing the distortion of the phases in the RBM, are uniformly distributed, the presence of an IRS provides no advantage. The analytical results outperform previous works and are verified by Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations.

This work investigates the effect of double intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in improving the spectrum efficient of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. Specifically, we aim to solve a weighted sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the digital precoding at the transmitter and the analog phase shifters at the IRS, subject to the minimum achievable rate constraint. To facilitate the design of an efficient solution, we first reformulate the original problem into a tractable one by exploiting the majorization-minimization (MM) method. Then, a block coordinate descent (BCD) method is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution, where the precoding matrices and the phase shifters are alternately optimized. Specifically, the digital precoding matrix design problem is solved by the quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP), while the analog phase shift optimization is solved by the Riemannian manifold optimization (RMO). The convergence and computational complexity are analyzed. In this letter, we investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-aided device to device (D2D) communication system over Rician fading channels with imperfect hardware including both hardware impairment at the transceivers and phase noise at the RISs. This paper has optimized the phase shift by a genetic algorithm (GA) method to maximize the achievable rate for the continuous phase shifts (CPSs) and discrete phase shifts (DPSs). We also consider the two special cases of no RIS hardware impairments (N-RIS-HWIs) and no transceiver hardware impairments (N-T-HWIs). We present closed-form expressions for the achievable rate of different cases and study the impact of hardware impairments on the communication quality. Different from conventional wired line connections, industrial control through wireless transmission is widely regarded as a promising solution due to its reduced cost, increased long-term reliability, and enhanced reliability. However, mission-critical applications impose stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements that entail ultra-reliability low-latency communications (URLLC). The primary feature of URLLC is that the blocklength of channel codes is short, and the conventional Shannon's Capacity is not applicable. In this paper, we consider the URLLC in a factory automation (FA) scenario. Due to densely deployed equipment in FA, wireless signal are easily blocked by the obstacles. To address this issue, we propose to deploy intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to create an alternative transmission link, which can enhance the transmission reliability. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for IRS-aided URLLC-enabled communications in a FA scenario. Both the average data rate (ADR) and the average decoding error probability (ADEP) are derived under finite channel blocklength for seven cases: 1) Rayleigh fading channel; 2) With direct channel link; 3) Nakagami-m fading channel; 4) Imperfect phase alignment; 5) Multiple-IRS case; 6) Rician fading channel; 7) Correlated channels. Given the proliferation of wireless sensors and smart mobile devices, an explosive escalation of the volume of data is anticipated. However, restricted by their limited physical sizes and low manufacturing costs, these wireless devices tend to have limited computational capabilities and battery lives. To overcome this limitation, wireless devices may offload their computational tasks to the nearby computing nodes at the network edge in mobile edge computing (MEC). At the time of writing, the benefits of MEC systems have not been fully exploited, predominately because the computation offloading link is still far from perfect. In this article, we propose to enhance MEC systems by exploiting the emerging technique of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which are capable of `reconfiguring' the wireless propagation environments, hence enhancing the offloading links. The benefits of RISs can be maximized by jointly optimizing both the RISs as well as the communications and computing resource allocations of MEC systems. Unfortunately, this joint optimization imposes new research challenges on the system design. Against this background, this article provides an overview of RIS-assisted MEC systems and highlights their four use cases as well as their design challenges and solutions. Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO) is one of the most promising technologies for the fifth generation and beyond wireless communication system. However, a large number of antennas incur high power consumption and hardware costs, and high-frequency communications place a heavy burden on the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at the base station (BS). Furthermore, it is too costly to equipping each antenna with a high-precision ADC in a large antenna array system. It is promising to adopt low-resolution ADCs to address this problem. In this paper, we investigate the cascaded channel estimation for a mmWave massive MIMO system aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with the BS equipped with few-bit ADCs. Due to the low-rank property of the cascaded channel, the estimation of the cascaded channel can be formulated as a low-rank matrix completion problem. We introduce a Bayesian optimal estimation framework for estimating the user-RIS-BS cascaded channel to tackle with the information loss caused by quantization. To implement the estimator and achieve the matrix completion, we use efficient bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiG-AMP) algorithm. Extensive simulation results verify that our proposed method can accurately estimate the cascaded channel for the RIS-aided mmWave massive MIMO system with low-resolution ADCs.

Active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have recently been proposed to compensate for the severe multiplicative fading effect of conventional passive RIS-aided systems. Each reflecting element of active RISs is assisted by an amplifier such that the incident signal can be reflected and amplified instead of only being reflected as in passive RIS-aided systems. This work addresses the practical challenge that, on the one hand, in active RIS-aided systems the perfect individual CSI of the RIS-aided channels cannot be acquired due to the lack of signal processing power at the active RISs, but, on the other hand, this CSI is required to calculate the expected system data rate and RIS transmit power needed for transceiver design. To address this issue, we first derive closed-form expressions for the average achievable rate and the average RIS transmit power based on partial CSI of the RIS-aided channels. Then, we formulate an average achievable rate maximization problem for jointly optimizing the active beamforming at both the base station (BS) and the RIS. This problem is then tackled using the majorization--minimization (MM) algorithm framework, and, for each iteration, semi-closed-form solutions for the BS and RIS beamforming are derived based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. To ensure the quality of service (QoS) of each user, we further formulate a rate outage constrained beamforming problem, which is solved using the Bernstein-Type inequality (BTI) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as an appealing solution to enhance wireless communication performance by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we propose to apply IRS to the physical-layer service integration (PHY-SI) system, where a single-antenna access point (AP) integrates two sorts of service messages, i.e., multicast message and confidential message, via superposition coding to serve multiple single-antenna users. Our goal is to optimize the power allocation (for transmitting different messages) at the AP and the passive beamforming at the IRS to maximize the achievable secrecy rate region. To this end, we formulate this problem as a bi-objective optimization problem, which is shown equivalent to a secrecy rate maximization problem subject to the constraints on the quality of multicast service. Due to the non-convexity of this problem, we propose two customized algorithms to obtain its high-quality suboptimal solutions, thereby approximately characterizing the secrecy rate region. The resulting performance gap with the globally optimal solution is analyzed. Furthermore, we provide theoretical analysis to unveil the impact of IRS beamforming on the performance of PHY-SI. Numerical results demonstrate the advantages of leveraging IRS in improving the performance of PHY-SI and also validate our theoretical analysis.

The emerging reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is promising for applications in the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems to effectively compensate for propagation loss or tackle the blockage issue. Considering the high mobility of users in realistic scenarios, it is essential to adjust the phase shifts in real time to align the beam towards the mobile users, which requires to frequently estimate the channel state information. Hence, it is imperative to design efficient channel tracking schemes to avoid the complex channel estimation procedure. In this paper, we develop a novel channel tracking scheme with two advantages over conventional schemes. First, our tracking scheme is based on the cascaded angles at the RIS instead of the accurate angle values, which is more practical. Second, it can be employed under a more general setting where the noise can be non-Gaussian. Simulation results show the high tracking accuracy of our proposed scheme, and validate the superiority to the existing EKF-based tracking scheme., Submitted to IEEE

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning systems. In this paper, we consider multiple mobile users (MUs) positioning problem in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-division duplex (TDD) mmWave systems aided by the RIS. We derive the expression for the space-time channel response vector (STCRV) as a novel type of fingerprint. The STCRV consists of the multipath channel characteristics, e.g., time delay and angle of arrival (AOA), which is related to the position of the MU. By using the STCRV as input, we propose a novel residual convolution network regression (RCNR) learning algorithm to output the estimated three-dimensional (3D) position of the MU. Specifically, the RCNR learninng algorithm includes a data processing block to process the input STCRV, a normal convolution block to extract the features of STCRV, four residual convolution blocks to further extract the features and protect the integrity of the features, and a regression block to estimate the 3D position. Extensive simulation results are also presented to demonstrate that the proposed RCNR learning algorithm outperforms the traditional convolution neural network (CNN)., 5 pages, 9 figures

Extremely large-scale massive multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is regarded as a promising technology for next-generation communication systems. In order to enhance the beamforming gains, codebook-based beam training is widely adopted in XL-MIMO systems. However, in XL-MIMO systems, the near-field domain expands, and near-field codebook should be adopted for beam training, which significantly increases the pilot overhead. To tackle this problem, we propose a deep learning-based beam training scheme where the near-field channel model and the near-field codebook are considered. To be specific, we first utilize the received signals corresponding to the far-field wide beams to estimate the optimal near-field beam. Two training schemes are proposed, namely the proposed original and the improved neural networks. The original scheme estimates the optimal near-field codeword directly based on the output of the neural networks. By contrast, the improved scheme performs additional beam testing, which can significantly improve the performance of beam training. Finally, the simulation results show that our proposed schemes can significantly reduce the training overhead in the near-field domain and achieve beamforming gains., accepted by IEEE communication letter

This paper investigates an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided mobile edge computing (MEC) system. Compared with passive RIS, the active RIS is equipped with active reflective amplifier, which can effectively circumvent the "double path loss" attenuation. We propose a joint computing and communication design to minimize the maximum computational latency (MCL), subject to both the phase shift constraints and the edge computing capability constraints. Specifically, the original problem is decoupled into four subproblems, and then the block coordinate descent (BCD) method and the successive convex approximation (SCA) method are applied to alternately optimize the subproblems. Wireless powered mobile edge computing (WP-MEC) has been recognized as a promising technique to provide both enhanced computational capability and sustainable energy supply to massive low-power wireless devices. However, its energy consumption becomes substantial, when the transmission link used for wireless energy transfer (WET) and for computation offloading is hostile. To mitigate this hindrance, we propose to employ the emerging technique of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in WP-MEC systems, which is capable of providing an additional link both for WET and for computation offloading. Specifically, we consider a multi-user scenario where both the WET and the computation offloading are based on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Built on this model, an innovative framework is developed to minimize the energy consumption of the IRS-aided WP-MEC network, by optimizing the power allocation of the WET signals, the local computing frequencies of wireless devices, both the sub-band-device association and the power allocation used for computation offloading, as well as the IRS reflection coefficients. The major challenges of this optimization lie in the strong coupling between the settings of WET and of computing as well as the unit-modules constraint on IRS reflection coefficients. To tackle these issues, the technique of alternative optimization is invoked for decoupling the WET and computing designs, while two sets of locally optimal IRS reflection coefficients are provided for WET and for computation offloading separately relying on the successive convex approximation method. Coarse quantization by using low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) is an attractive approach to relieve the burden of power consumption and hardware cost of implementing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this article, we analyze the uplink spectral efficiency of a multiuser massive MIMO system with low-resolution ADCs in the context of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) under multipath channels. Firstly, we develop an efficient pilot scheme which results in a constant average power of the quantization noise for different channel delay power spectrums and also minimizes the mean squared error of channel estimation. Then a tight approximation of the uplink achievable rate is derived in a closed form considering both perfect channel state information (CSI) and estimated CSI. Then we analyze the impact of multipath channels on the system performance. Under perfect CSI, we discover that an increment of multipath taps has a positive impact on compensating the performance degradation due to the quantization noise. Under imperfect CSI, the most beneficial channel is uniformly distributed over a specific number of taps. Simulations are conducted to verify our analytical results.

In this paper, we investigate the design of robust and secure transmission in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless communication systems. In particular, a multi-antenna access point (AP) communicates with a single-antenna legitimate receiver in the presence of multiple single-antenna eavesdroppers, where the artificial noise (AN) is transmitted to enhance the security performance. Besides, we assume that the cascaded AP-IRS-user channels are imperfect due to the channel estimation error. To minimize the transmit power, the beamforming vector at the transmitter, the AN covariance matrix, and the IRS phase shifts are jointly optimized subject to the outage rate probability constraints under the statistical cascaded channel state information (CSI) error model. To handle the resulting non-convex optimization problem, we first approximate the outage rate probability constraints by using the Bernstein-type inequality. Then, we develop a suboptimal algorithm based on alternating optimization, the penalty-based and semidefinite relaxation methods. Simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme significantly reduces the transmit power compared to other benchmark schemes.

It is challenging to precisely configure the phase shifts of the reflecting elements at the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) due to inherent hardware impairments (HIs). In this paper, the mean square error (MSE) performance is investigated in an RIS-aided single-user multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) communication system with transceiver HIs and RIS phase noise. We aim to jointly optimize the transmit precoder, linear received equalizer, and RIS reflecting matrices to minimize the MSE. To tackle this problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed, wherein the beamforming matrices are alternately optimized. Specifically, for the beamforming optimization subproblem, we derive the closed-form expression of the optimal precoder and equalizer matrices. Then, for the phase shift optimization subproblem, an efficient algorithm based on the majorization-minimization (MM) method is proposed. In this paper, we investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser full-duplex secure communication system with hardware impairments at transceivers and RIS, where multiple eavesdroppers overhear the two-way transmitted signals simultaneously, and an RIS is applied to enhance the secrecy performance. Aiming at maximizing the sum secrecy rate (SSR), a joint optimization problem of the transmit beamforming at the base station (BS) and the reflecting beamforming at the RIS is formulated under the transmit power constraint of the BS and the unit modulus constraint of the phase shifters. As the environment is time-varying and the system is high-dimensional, this non-convex optimization problem is mathematically intractable. A deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based algorithm is explored to obtain the satisfactory solution by repeatedly interacting with and learning from the dynamic environment. Extensive simulation results illustrate that the DRL-based secure beamforming algorithm is proved to be significantly effective in improving the SSR. It is also found that the performance of the DRL-based method can be greatly improved and the convergence speed of neural network can be accelerated with appropriate neural network parameters., 16pages,14 figures, accepted by IEEE Internet of Things Journal
