Abstract

Nitrogen is one of the most yield-limiting nutrients for rice production, and proper nitrogen fertilizer management is critical for high yield. In rice research, more time and energy are devoted to managing nitrogen fertilizer than any other nutrient because of the high potential for a return on the fertilizer investment.Considering this, an experiment was conducted at the Soil Science farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during July 2017 to December 2017 in Aman season to examine the effect of different doses of nitrogen fertilizer on growth and yield of T. Aman rice variety (BRRI Hybrid Dhan4). The experiment consisted of four nitrogen levels (viz. 0,40, 80and 100 kg N ha-1) in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The grain yield increased over control varied from 47% to 53%. The highest grain yield was observed 53% for treatment T3 (N80) and the lowest was recorded 47% in treatment T2 (N40). The highest N uptake was recorded 134.16 kg ha-1for treatment T3 when rice plants were fertilized with 80 kg N ha which was statistically similar to T4 and the lowest 62.45 kg ha-1 in treatment T1 (control). However the overall performance on yield contributing parameters was found on T3 treatment. We concluded that application of the intermediate levelof nitrogen (80 kg N ha-1) was economical and environment-friendly for the cultivation of BRRI Hybrid Dhan4.

Abstract

Background: Assessments of age-specifc mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Afairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent with the estimates of the numbers of deaths in the GBD. The present iteration of the GBD, GBD 2017, improves on previous assessments and provides timely estimates of the mortality experience of populations globally. Methods: The GBD uses all available data to produce estimates of mortality rates between 1950 and 2017 for 23 age groups, both sexes, and 918 locations, including 195 countries and territories and subnational locations for 16 countries. Data used include vital registration systems, sample registration systems, household surveys (complete birth histories, summary birth histories, sibling histories), censuses (summary birth histories, household deaths), and Demographic Surveillance Sites. In total, this analysis used 8259 data sources. Estimates of the probability of death between birth and the age of 5 years and between ages 15 and 60 years are generated and then input into a model life table system to produce complete life tables for all locations and years. Fatal discontinuities and mortality due to HIV/AIDS are analysed separately and then incorporated into the estimation. We analyse the relationship between age-specifc mortality and development status using the Socio-demographic Index, a composite measure based on fertility under the age of 25 years, education, and income. There are four main methodological improvements in GBD 2017 compared with GBD 2016: 622 additional data sources have been incorporated; new estimates of population, generated by the GBD study, are used; statistical methods used in diferent components of the analysis have been further standardised and improved; and the analysis has been extended backwards in time by two decades to start in 1950. Findings: Globally, 18·7% (95% uncertainty interval 18·4-19·0) of deaths were registered in 1950 and that proportion has been steadily increasing since, with 58·8% (58·2-59·3) of all deaths being registered in 2015. At the global level, between 1950 and 2017, life expectancy increased from 48·1 years (46·5-49·6) to 70·5 years (70·1-70·8) for men and from 52·9 years (51·7-54·0) to 75·6 years (75·3-75·9) for women. Despite this overall progress, there remains substantial variation in life expectancy at birth in 2017, which ranges from 49·1 years (46·5-51·7) for men in the Central African Republic to 87·6 years (86·9-88·1) among women in Singapore. The greatest progress across age groups was for children younger than 5 years; under-5 mortality dropped from 216·0 deaths (196·3-238·1) per 1000 livebirths in 1950 to 38·9 deaths (35·6-42·83) per 1000 livebirths in 2017, with huge reductions across countries. Nevertheless, there were still 5·4 million (5·2-5·6) deaths among children younger than 5 years in the world in 2017. Progress has been less pronounced and more variable for adults, especially for adult males, who had stagnant or increasing mortality rates in several countries. The gap between male and female life expectancy between 1950 and 2017, while relatively stable at the global level, shows distinctive patterns across super-regions and has consistently been the largest in central Europe, eastern Europe, and central Asia, and smallest in south Asia. Performance was also variable across countries and time in observed mortality rates compared with those expected on the basis of development. Interpretation: This analysis of age-sex-specifc mortality shows that there are remarkably complex patterns in population mortality across countries. The fndings of this study highlight global successes, such as the large decline in under-5 mortality, which refects signifcant local, national, and global commitment and investment over several decades. However, they also bring attention to mortality patterns that are a cause for concern, particularly among adult men and, to a lesser extent, women, whose mortality rates have stagnated in many countries over the time period of this study, and in some cases are increasing. © 2018 The Author(s).

Abstract

Background: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of “leaving no one behind”, it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and estimated the health-related SDG index for 195 countries and territories for the period 1990–2017, projected indicators to 2030, and analysed global attainment. Methods: We measured progress on 41 health-related SDG indicators from 1990 to 2017, an increase of four indicators since GBD 2016 (new indicators were health worker density, sexual violence by non-intimate partners, population census status, and prevalence of physical and sexual violence [reported separately]). We also improved the measurement of several previously reported indicators. We constructed national-level estimates and, for a subset of health-related SDGs, examined indicator-level differences by sex and Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintile. We also did subnational assessments of performance for selected countries. To construct the health-related SDG index, we transformed the value for each indicator on a scale of 0–100, with 0 as the 2·5th percentile and 100 as the 97·5th percentile of 1000 draws calculated from 1990 to 2030, and took the geometric mean of the scaled indicators by target. To generate projections through 2030, we used a forecasting framework that drew estimates from the broader GBD study and used weighted averages of indicator-specific and country-specific annualised rates of change from 1990 to 2017 to inform future estimates. We assessed attainment of indicators with defined targets in two ways: first, using mean values projected for 2030, and then using the probability of attainment in 2030 calculated from 1000 draws. We also did a global attainment analysis of the feasibility of attaining SDG targets on the basis of past trends. Using 2015 global averages of indicators with defined SDG targets, we calculated the global annualised rates of change required from 2015 to 2030 to meet these targets, and then identified in what percentiles the required global annualised rates of change fell in the distribution of country-level rates of change from 1990 to 2015. We took the mean of these global percentile values across indicators and applied the past rate of change at this mean global percentile to all health-related SDG indicators, irrespective of target definition, to estimate the equivalent 2030 global average value and percentage change from 2015 to 2030 for each indicator. Findings: The global median health-related SDG index in 2017 was 59·4 (IQR 35·4–67·3), ranging from a low of 11·6 (95% uncertainty interval 9·6–14·0) to a high of 84·9 (83·1–86·7). SDG index values in countries assessed at the subnational level varied substantially, particularly in China and India, although scores in Japan and the UK were more homogeneous. Indicators also varied by SDI quintile and sex, with males having worse outcomes than females for non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality, alcohol use, and smoking, among others. Most countries were projected to have a higher health-related SDG index in 2030 than in 2017, while country-level probabilities of attainment by 2030 varied widely by indicator. Under-5 mortality, neonatal mortality, maternal mortality ratio, and malaria indicators had the most countries with at least 95% probability of target attainment. Other indicators, including NCD mortality and suicide mortality, had no countries projected to meet corresponding SDG targets on the basis of projected mean values for 2030 but showed some probability of attainment by 2030. For some indicators, including child malnutrition, several infectious diseases, and most violence measures, the annualised rates of change required to meet SDG targets far exceeded the pace of progress achieved by any country in the recent past. We found that applying the mean global annualised rate of change to indicators without defined targets would equate to about 19% and 22% reductions in global smoking and alcohol consumption, respectively; a 47% decline in adolescent birth rates; and a more than 85% increase in health worker density per 1000 population by 2030. Interpretation: The GBD study offers a unique, robust platform for monitoring the health-related SDGs across demographic and geographic dimensions. Our findings underscore the importance of increased collection and analysis of disaggregated data and highlight where more deliberate design or targeting of interventions could accelerate progress in attaining the SDGs. Current projections show that many health-related SDG indicators, NCDs, NCD-related risks, and violence-related indicators will require a concerted shift away from what might have driven past gains—curative interventions in the case of NCDs—towards multisectoral, prevention-oriented policy action and investments to achieve SDG aims. Notably, several targets, if they are to be met by 2030, demand a pace of progress that no country has achieved in the recent past. The future is fundamentally uncertain, and no model can fully predict what breakthroughs or events might alter the course of the SDGs. What is clear is that our actions—or inaction—today will ultimately dictate how close the world, collectively, can get to leaving no one behind by 2030. Abstract

Farmers in developing countries rarely know true variety names of crops they grow. In this paper, we identify rice variety identity with DNA fingerprinting by using an advanced gynotyping technique of 1,302 rice seed samples collected from total of 544 farmers in Bangladesh in 2014 and 2015. To identify farmers’ varieties, we compare the DNA information of farmers’ seeds against three DNA data sources: Bangladesh breeder seeds, Indian breeder seeds, and IRRI gene resources which include previously collected improved and traditional rice varieties. In particular, our analysis includes identification of submergence-tolerant rice varieties which have been developed and distributed in Bangladesh in recent years. The results indicate that about 7% of the seed samples were identified as submergence-tolerant rice varieties, i.e., BR11-Sub1 (5%) and Swarna-Sub1 (2%). Other modern varieties were also identified by DNA fingerprinting. Farmers’ identification of varieties was found poor, especially on old varieties. Simple adoption models indicate that the estimation results are unreliable when farmers’ ability to identify varieties is poor.

7. Bidding for Seed Price via Mobile Phone: A Case of Submergence-tolerant Rice in Northern Bangladesh

Abstract

We conducted a bidding survey by calling 461 farmers on their mobile phones and asked their bidding prices for a 10 kg bag of two submergence-tolerant rice varieties. We delivered seed bags to farmers whose bidding price was higher than a pre-fixed price. The sample farmers were selected from panel data conducted in 2013 and 2015. We found that farmers who experienced floods in 2015 bid for a higher price for Swarna-Sub1, one of the two submergence-tolerant rice varieties. The farmers who had indicated shortage of Swarna-Sub1 seeds in the 2015 survey were more likely to participate in bidding for Swarna-Sub1. Regarding the bidding process, the timing of phone bidding mattered. Farmers participated in phone bidding more in the morning, on holidays, and later in the planting season. The results in the paper suggest a possible use of mobile phones for marketing new rice varieties and other agricultural inputs.

BACKGROUND : Emotions are our feelings; if properly used are essential tools for successful and fulfilling life. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is defined as "the composite set of capabilities that enable a person to manage himself / herself and others". Six important facets of Emotional Intelligence are: self-awareness, self-confidence, self-control, empathy, motivation and social-competency. The stereotype of women being the more "emotional" sex survives to this day and women tend to have an edge over men when it comes to basic skills for a happy and successful life. AIMS : The objective of the study was to determine the gender differences in Emotional Intelligence among first year medical students. SETTINGS & STUDY DESIGN : The study included 150 first year medical students. Informed consent and ethical clearance was obtained. METHODS : Emotional Intelligence was assessed using emotional quotient self- assessment checklist to which subjects responded on five-point Likert scale. RESULTS : The mean scores of Emotional Intelligence in males and females were compared using unpaired students t-test. Emotional Intelligence was significantly high in females (105.34+7.73) compared to males (102.06+8.87) (p =0.02). CONCLUSION : The reason might be due to the fact that women tend to be more emotionally expressive than men and understand emotions better. In addition, some evidence exists that certain areas of the brain dedicated to processing emotions could be larger in women than in men. Hence the present study may provide a better insight into individual's emotional development and also psychoeducational intervention on individual's emotional balance which might indirectly influence their success in career and family life.

Abstract

Metastasis is the complex process by which primary tumor cells migrate and establish secondary tumors in an adjacent or distant location in the body. Early detection of metastatic disease and effective therapeutic options for targeting these detected metastases remain impediments to effectively treating patients with advanced cancers. If metastatic lesions are identified early, patients might maximally benefit from effective early therapeutic interventions. Further, monitoring patients whose primary tumors are effectively treated for potential metastatic disease onset is also highly valuable. Finally, patients with metastatic disease can be monitored for efficacy of specific therapeutic interventions through effective metastatic detection techniques. Thus, being able to detect and visualize metastatic lesions is key and provides potential to greatly improve overall patient outcomes. In order to achieve these objectives, researchers have endeavored to mechanistically define the steps involved in the metastatic process as well as ways to effectively detect metastatic progression. We presently overview various preclinical and clinical in vitro and in vivo assays developed to more efficiently detect tumor metastases, which provides the foundation for developing more effective therapies for this invariably fatal component of the cancerous process.

13. DEGRADATION BEHAVIOUR OF LIMESTONE CONCRETE UNDER LIMITED TIME SODIUM EXPOSURE

Abstract

Sodium leak on concrete structures lead to substantial damage due to thermal and chemical attack. Limestone concrete is widely used on floor, housing sodium components. The present study focuses on degradation behavior of limestone concrete under limited time exposure at 550°C in open air. The reduction in its compressive strength after interaction with liquid sodium was about 29%. Chemical analysis of sodium exposed specimen confirmed a bulk penetration of sodium up to 20 mm depth with localized penetration of 44 mm. A sacrificial limestone concrete layer of 50 mm thickness on structural concrete is recommended for sodium handling areas, for half an hour sodium exposure.

Abstract

Coccidiosis is an old parasitic disease, prevalent all over the country and has a significant impact on poultry production. In this paper, economic loss to poultry industry has been estimated considering the major economic parameters. The estimation has revealed that commercial broiler industry is a major sufferer due to coccidiosis wherein 95.61 per cent of the total economic loss occurs due to the disease. The commercial layer industry shares 3.53 per cent economic loss, mainly due to cost of chemoprophylaxis and reduced egg production. A comparison across economic traits has revealed that loss is maximum due to reduced body weight gain, followed by increased FCR (23.74%) and chemoprophylaxis (2.83%) in the total loss due to coccidiosis in broiler industry of India. The overall comparison of economic traits for all the types of poultry sector it has shown that reduced body wt gain and increased FCR are the major parameters from which 68.08 per cent and 22.70 per cent annual loss has occurred in the total loss from coccidiosis in India during the year 2003-04. The total loss due to coccidiosis has been found to be of Rs 1.14 billion (approx) for the year 2003-04. The study has observed that generation of this data across different geographical regions will be helpful to conclude about the global economic loss due to coccidiosis in the poultry industry.

Collection of wild tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) seed with non-selective gears and its impact upon the coastal aquatic biodiversity has been investigated. Loss of undesired species as by-catch was estimated to be 1,075 individuals for collection of every desired shrimp seed which amounted to be 132 billion in a study area stretching 3 km long coastline of the Sagar Island under the Sunderban Biosphere, West Bengal, India. Non-penaeid shrimp seed and crab larvae accounted to be maximally destroyed as their overall contribution towards the by-catch were 56.5% and 29.44%, respectively. In the present paper, the main parameters affecting the flow maldistribution have been identified and a detailed analysis has been carried out concerning how the parameters affect the flow maldistribution. Using the thermal model of Rao et al. (2002), the effect of flow maldistribution on the thermal performance of the plate heat exchanger was simulated. The present analysis shows that flow maldistribution needs to be taken into account when the number of channels per fluid is greater than 20 and more particularly for low corrugation angles (? = 30�). 22. Cloning, purification and preliminary crystallographic analysis of a putative pyridoxal kinase from Bacillus subtilis

Abstract

Pyridoxal kinases (PdxK) are able to catalyse the phosphorylation of three vitamin B6 precursors, pyridoxal, pyridoxine and pyridoxamine, to their 5'-­phosphates and play an important role in the vitamin B6 salvage pathway. Recently, the thiD gene of Bacillus subtilis was found to encode an enzyme which has the activity expected of a pyridoxal kinase despite its previous assignment as an HMPP kinase owing to higher sequence similarity. As such, this enzyme would appear to represent a new class of `HMPP kinase-like' pyridoxal kinases. B. subtilis thiD has been cloned and the protein has been overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified and subsequently crystallized in a binary complex with ADP and Mg2+. X-ray diffraction data have been collected from crystals to 2.8 Å resolution at 100 K. The crystals belong to a primitive tetragonal system, point group 422, and analysis of the systematic absences suggest that they belong to one of the enantiomorphic pair of space groups P41212 or P43212. Consideration of the space-group symmetry and unit-cell parameters (a = b = 102.9, c = 252.6 Å, [alpha] = [beta] = [gamma] = 90°) suggest that the crystals contain between three and six molecules in the asymmetric unit. A full structure determination is under way to provide insights into aspects of the enzyme mechanism and substrate specificity.

Abstract

Offset strip fins are used in Compact Heat Exchangers. A new technique for the prediction of heat transfer characteristics of these surfaces has been established. The method utilizes an analogy between heat and momentum transfer proposed for short thermally developing laminar flow. The present work exploits the intuition that the analogy can be utilized for any repeated flow structure with heat transfer from surfaces that are also repetitive in array. In the offset strip fin geometry, the original form of this analogy shows a constant bias, which depends on the fin geometry. This leads to the incorporation of the fin geometrical parameters to a new analogy equation resulting in a generalized form of equation for the entire range of offset strip fins. The results clearly indicate that the heat transfer characteristics of offset strip fin surfaces could be predicted by measuring pressure drop across them alone. � 2006 R.T. Edwards, Inc.

"The state of Assam in northeastern India has an excellent sub-tropical climate for the development of fresh water fish culture in a variety of aquatic bodies. Aquaculture not only plays an important role in nutrition but also in the rural economy of the State. A pilot project conducted with a group of resource poor tribal farmers revealed that a production of about 1 800 kg/ha/yr could be achieved from small seasonal homestead ponds through integrated use of locally available biological resources. This implies an excellent opportunity for improving the rural economy through the development of small-scale fish culture enterprises. In this project, a greater emphasis was placed on improving the knowledge and skills of the farmers and their farming practices so that in the future they would be in a position to expand their activities with financial assistance made available locally. Aquaculture being a new activity in the area, this pilot project was only a start in acquainting the farmers with the practice and potential of aquaculture."

Abstract

The safety issues of liquid metal fast breeder reactors (LMFBR) are crucial due to the fact that a highly reactive and hazardous fluid like liquid sodium is used as coolant. One of the extreme cases, which can occur in a fuel subassembly of an LMFBR, is a total blockage of liquid inside the subassembly, which may lead to boiling of sodium. The present study addresses this problem by conducting experiments on a 19-rod bundle assembly enclosed inside a tall hexagonal enclosure. Liquid sodium is used as the heat transfer fluid. The natural convection mode of heat transfer is the main focus of investigation with a co-flowing air through an annular packed bed to simulate the neighbouring subassemblies. The maximum temperature achieved under different rates of power generations and air flow conditions are observed. Also the radial temperature distributions at different planes under different operating conditions of power and air flow rates have been observed. The results are of significant importance for validating analysis for the purpose of prediction of boiling incipience in an LMFBR subassembly under totally blocked condition. ? 2004 Elsevier B.V. Fast breeder nuclear reactors used for power generation, have fuel subassemblies in the form of rod bundles enclosed inside tall hexagonal cavities. Each subassembly can be considered as a porous medium with internal heat generation. A three-dimensional analysis is carried out here to estimate the heat transfer due to natural convection, in such an anisotropic, partially heat generating porous medium, which corresponds to the typical case of blocked flow in a fuel subassembly inside the reactor core. Using the finite volume technique, the temperatures at various locations inside hexagonal cavity are obtained. Abstract

The present work is aimed at building a comprehensive heat transfer model for pool boiling on horizontal tubes combining sliding bubble mechanism with natural convection, microlayer evaporation and transient conduction during boundary layer reformation, to predict the boiling heat flux for a given wall superheat. The model has been compared to experimental results from literature for R134a and also to independent experiments conducted by the authors for water. Even with a number of simplified assumptions a reasonably good agreement has been observed between model and experiments in the low and medium heat flux region and moderate pressure.

Abstract

Pool boiling characteristics on horizontal tubes with diameter lying between wires and industrial tubes have been investigated experimentally. Boiling experiments are carried out at near atmospheric pressures with water and R-123 as boiling liquids. The experimental results show quite a different boiling behavior compared to larger tubes or plates. The commonly used correlations are found to be ineffective over this range of diameters. A developing sliding bubble mechanism can be attributed to such behavior which shows a strong diameter effect. The heat transfer is found to increase with diameter which is contrary to that on industrial size tubes. Useful boiling data are presented in this range of diameters in which experimental data are scarce. The need for more investigations is stressed in view of emerging applications in this area.

Abstract

Ablation modeling in cylindrical geometry is a very important problem in the thermal modeling of spacecraft, which has not been dealt with adequately in the literature. In the present work, two-dimensional ablation in cylindrical geometry is considered when the incident heat flux varies axially as well as temporally. A novel idea of using an effective inverse Stefan number, which is analogous to the effective heat of ablation (used in the literature), is proposed to be used as a variable nondimensional latent heat of ablation for ablation modeling, indirectly accounting for various processes involved in ablation. A two-dimensional ablation problem is solved by an alternating direction implicit and adjustable time-step scheme, coupled with boundary immobilization. Quasi-one-dimensional and two-dimensional modeling methods have been compared for two different materials, and the effects of variation of the proposed inverse Stefan number with the incident heat flux and the presence of highly conducting structure bonded to the ablative material have been studied. An optimum modeling method under specific conditions is suggested.

31. Numerical modelling of microscale effects in conduction for different thermal boundary conditions

Abstract

Non-Fourier microscale effects are significant during the rapid heating of metallic substrates. Recently, a two phase lag model for conduction has been proposed, which accounts for the finite propagation speed of a thermal wave and the equilibration time between the electrons and lattice. Available closed-form solutions for the dual phase lag model are found to be very different for apparently similar boundary conditions. In this study, the origin of the discrepancy in the available analytical results has been identified as the sensitivity of the predicted solution to the way of implementing the surface boundary condition. A numerical solution procedure based on the finite element method and fourth-order Runge-Kutta time marching procedure has been employed for the spatial and temporal discretisations, respectively. The predicted results for different boundary conditions clearly capture thermal wavelike and pure diffusion-type phenomena in the appropriate range of time lag values. Application of the two phase lag model to laser pulse heating illustrates that the effects of microscale phenomena on the spatial and temporal variations of temperature could become important for high frequency pulsing.

Abstract

The present analysis gives an account of exergy destruction in regenerative heat exchangers used in cryogenic applications from the view point of Second Law of Thermodynamics. Unlike the previous studies, the present work considers the solid storage matrix with temperature variation along both spatial and temporal co-ordinates. The present analysis also considers the effect of matrix longitudinal heat conduction on the Second Law behaviour. Finite longitudinal conductivity, which results from the distribution of temperature in the matrix, acts as a major non-ideality associated with the analyses done so far. The present analysis shows that the introduction of longitudinal conduction ensures the optimization of charging period for the regenerator. This makes it possible to optimize the regenerator performance globally to produce optimum combination of Ntu and charging time. It is also observed that a decrease in longitudinal conductivity reduces the optimum charging time. Thus the non-existence of thermodynamic optima at the absence of longitudinal conduction is explained adequately. ? Springer-Verlag 1999.

Abstract

A second law analysis is presented for thermally dispersive flow through a plate heat exchanger. It is well known that in plate or plate fin type heat exchangers the backmixing and other deviations from plug flow contribute significantly to the inefficiency of the heat exchanger, which is of importance to heat exchangers working in the cryogenic regime. The conventional axial heat dispersion model which is used so far is found to be better than 'plug flow' model but still unsatisfactory where the timescale related to heat transfer is comparable with the thermal relaxation time for the propagation of dispersion. The present work therefore considers dispersion as a wave phenomenon propagating with a finite velocity. The study discusses the nature of variation of different contributions to total exergy loss in the heat exchanger with respect to dispersion parameters of the Peclet number and propagation velocity of the dispersive wave. The practical example of the single-pass plate heat exchanger demonstrates how a second law optimization can be carried out for heat transfer equipment under such conditions. ? 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. 34. Load balanced mapping of data structures in parallel memory modules for fast and conflict-free templates access

Conflict-free, memory access is one of the important factors for the overall performance of a multiprocessor System in which the available memory is partitioned into several modules. Even if there is no contention in the processor-memory interconnection path, conflicts may still occur when two or more processors attempt to gain access to a single memory module or a memory location within a module. With a goal to achieve higher memory bandwidth, in this paper we resolve access conflicts at the level of memory modules. In particular, we deal with the problem of evenly mapping a data structure, called host, into as few distinct memory modules as possible to guarantee that subsets of distinct host nodes, called templates, can be accessed simultaneously in a conflict-free manner.Since trees are among the most frequently used data structures in numerous applications, we propose a simple algebraic function based on the node indices for assigning the nodes of a k-ary tree to the memory modules in such a way that each subtree of a given height and arity can be accessed without conflicts. The assignment is direct, load balanced and also optimal in terms of the number of modules required. We also investigate conflict-free access to d-dimensional subcubes (Qd) of n-dimensional hypercubes (Qn), where Qn represcnts a set of items indexed with n-digit addresses and accesses will be made to subsets of items differing in any arbitrary d-digit positions. With the help of the coding theory, we propose a novel approach to solve the subcube access problem. Codes with minimum distance d > 2 play a crucial role in our applications. We prove that any occurrence of a subcube Q, C Qn, for O < a < d - 1, can be accessed without conflicts using [2n] memory modules, by associating Qn with a linear [M]code C of length n, size M and minimum distance d. Associating the hypercube nodes with perfect or maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, our problem is solved optimally both in terms of the number of memory modules required and load balancing per module. These codes can be easily modified (without node relocation) according to the change in the sìze of the host or the number of available memory modules.

Abstract

In recent years, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have radically changed the way people communicate. The most widely used platforms, such as Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram, claim more than one billion monthly active users each. Beyond these, news-oriented micro-blogging services, e.g., Twitter, are daily accessed by more than 120 million users sharing contents from all over the world. Unfortunately, legitimate users of the OSNs are mixed with malicious ones, which are interested in spreading unwanted, misleading, harmful, or discriminatory content. Spam detection in OSNs is generally approached by considering the characteristics of the account under analysis, its connection with the rest of the network, as well as data and metadata representing the content shared. However, obtaining all this information can be computationally expensive, or even unfeasible, on massive networks. Driven by these motivations, in this paper we propose SpADe, a multi-stage Spam Account Detection algorithm with reject option, whose purpose is to exploit less costly features at the early stages, while progressively extracting more complex information only for those accounts that are difficult to classify. Experimental evaluation shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared to single-stage approaches, which are much more complex in terms of features processing and classification time.

Abstract

Technological advancements in vehicular transportation systems have led to the growth of novel paradigms, in which vehicles and infrastructures collaborate to infer high-level knowledge about phenomena of interest. Vehicular Social Network (VSN) is one such paradigm in which vehicular network entities are considered as part of an Online Social Network (OSN), paving the way for new services derived from social context. Although vehicular crowdsourcing has tremendous benefits, its deployment in real systems requires to solve important challenges including defense against Sybil attacks. This paper proposes a novel fog-assisted system that uses SybilDriver to minimize the presence of Sybil entities in VSN-based crowdsourcing applications. The proposed system exploits the characteristics of Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks (VANETs) and OSNs to effectively recognize Sybils, and the adoption of fog computing helps reduce the overall network overhead by processing data closer to the vehicles. We perform detailed experiments on real-world publicly available datasets primarily to assess the effectiveness of SybilDriver against different Sybil attack strategies. Our experimental results show that SybilDriver detects Sybils with higher performance than state-of-the-art techniques under different settings. Furthermore, an evaluation of the fog architecture in terms of message complexity demonstrates low impact on the network overhead.

Abstract

Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a networking architecture where promising, intelligent services are designed via leveraging information from multiple heterogeneous sources of data within the network. However, the availability of such information in a timely manner requires processing and communication of raw data collected from these sources. Therefore, the economic feasibility of IoT-enabled networks relies on the efficient allocation of both computational and communication resources within the network. Since fog computing and 5G cellular networks approach this problem independently, there is a need for joint resource-provisioning of both communication and computational resources in the networks. As the solution to this problem, we propose a novel three-dimensional matching based resource provisioning algorithm that minimizes average service latency in the presence of various resource constraints, task deadlines and non-identical preferences at IoT devices, fog access points (FAPs) and small-cell access points (SAPs) in 5G networks. We prove the stability and termination of the proposed algorithm and also demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms through both, simulation and real-world experiments on the laboratory test-bed.

Abstract

Sedimentation rate was calculated by dividing a depth of the Cs-137 marker peak (in centimetres) by the age of the sediment at the time of sampling (in years). All locations, except location E positioned at the mouth of the Jadro River, exhibit more or less pronounced sediment rate decrease in the 1986-2005 period compared to the 1963-1986 period.
