Abstract

The BIO-MAÏDO (Bio-physicochemistry of tropical clouds at Maïdo (Réunion Island): processes and impacts on secondary organic aerosols formation) campaign was conducted from the 13th of March to the 4th of April 2019 on the tropical Réunion Island and implied several scientific teams and state-of-the-art instrumentation. The campaign was part of the BIO-MAÏDO project with the main objective is to improve our understanding of cloud impacts on the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) from biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) precursors in a tropical environment. Instruments were deployed at five sites: a receptor site, the Maïdo observatory (MO) at 2165 m asl, and four sites along the slope of the Maïdo mountain. The obtained dataset includes measurements of the gas-phase mixings ratio of volatile organic compounds (VOC), the characterization of the physical, chemical, and biological (bacterial diversity) properties of aerosols and the characterization of the physical, chemical and biological (identification of viable bacteria through culture-based approaches) properties of the cloud water. In addition, the turbulent parameters of the boundary layer, radiative fluxes, and emissions fluxes of BVOC from the surrounding vegetation were measured to help with the interpretation of the observed chemical concentrations in the different phases. Dynamical analyses using back-trajectories show two preferred trajectories routes for air masses arriving at MO during the daytime both corresponding to the return branches of the trade winds associated with the up-slopes thermal breezes, and both influenced by marine boundary layer and endemic forest below the Maïdo observatory. Additional analysis based on a high-resolution Meso-NH simulation for a typical cloudy day indicates that air masses sampled at MO likely encountered cloud processing during its transport along the slope. The highest mixing ratio of oxygenated VOC (OVOC) were measured above the site located in the endemic forest and the highest contribution of OVOC to total VOC at MO. Chemical composition of particles during the daytime shows that organic aerosol is more oxidized at MO than at other sites along the slope. This is a signature of photochemical aerosols aging along the slope. A higher concentration of oxalic acid at a site below MO indicates this oxidation occurs potentially through cloud processing. Despite an in-depth analysis of organic compounds in cloud water, around 80% on average of dissolved organic compounds is undefined highlighting the complexity of the cloud organic matter. The BIO-MAÏDO project is focusing on the analysis of observations and processes using numerical simulations: a 0D cloud chemistry model including biodegradation by bacteria in cloud water and a high-resolution 3D model coupling dynamical, microphysical and chemical processes.

Abstract

International audience; This work presents the results from a set of aerosol- and gas-phase measurements collected during the BIO-MAIDÖ field campaign in Reunion ́ between March 8 and April 5, 2019. Several offline and online sampling devices were installed at the Maidö Observatory (MO), a remote high-altitude site in the Southern Hemisphere, allowing the physical and chemical characterization of atmospheric aerosols and gases. The evaluation of short-lived gas-phase measurements allows us to conclude that air masses sampled during this period contained little or no anthropogenic influence. The dominance of sulfate and organic species in the submicron fraction of the aerosol is similar to that measured at other coastal sites.Carboxylic acids on PM10 showed a significant contribution of oxalic acid, a typical tracer of aqueous processed air masses, increasing at the end of the campaign. This result agrees with the positive matrix factorization analysis of the submicron organic aerosol, where more oxidized organic aerosols (MOOAs) dominated the organic aerosol with an increasing contribution toward the end of the campaign. Using a combination of air mass trajectories (model predictions), it was possible to assess the impact of aqueous phase processing on the formation of secondary organic aerosols(SOAs). Our results show how specific chemical signatures and physical properties of air masses, possibly affected by cloud processing, can be identified at Reunion. ́ These changes in properties are represented by a shift in aerosol size distribution to large diameters and an increased contribution of secondary sulfate and organic aerosols after cloud processing.

Abstract

International audience; Airborne bacteria are important components of biological aerosols. They have been shown to remain alive and metabolically active in the different compartment of the atmosphere (clouds, rain, aerosols), despite the harsh environmental conditions (U.V., free radicals, low temperatures, etc…). Current knowledge indicates that bacteria interfere with chemical reactivity in clouds, by utilizing carbon and nitrogen compounds, detoxifying free radicals and their precursors, etc. Nevertheless, due to the low biomass (≈ 10 2 to ≈10 6 cells/m3) and numerous sampling constraints, bacterial activity remains largely unexplored in atmospheric water; and regarding atmospheric chemistry, airborne bacteria are still essentially regarded as inert particles. To fulfill this gap in knowledge, this study aims at quantifying microbial activity in the different compartments of the atmosphere. Sampling and analytical methods were developed and adapted to overcome the low biomass constraint and the required immediate analyses, to obtain in situ quantitative and qualitative measurements of biological activity. Samplings of cloud water were performed between September 2019 and April 2020 at the Puy de Dôme Mountain's meteorological station (1465 m asl, France) using impactors and high-flow-rate impingers [1], whereas precipitations were collected below the summit (Opme station, 680 m asl) using an automated wet-deposition sampler. Bacterial metabolic activity was assessed by coupling two different approaches: the determination of the active fraction of bacteria using the ubiquitous esterase enzyme activity as proxy (fluorescein diacetate assay, flow cytometry), and the quantification of ribosomal DNA/RNA (qPCR). Relationship between these activities and meteorological, physical and chemical measurements were also examined. Preliminary results showed traces of a recent metabolic activity in cloud's bacterial communities, as highlighted by the observed rRNA/rDNA ratio of 1. In parallel, 8.5% of the bacteria in clouds exhibited an esterase activity, supporting that bacteria can remain active in clouds. The bacterial fraction displaying esterase activity in precipitation samples was much higher (30%), suggesting fast variations in bacterial metabolic activity, probably related with changes in environmental constraints and bacterial assemblage composition. Further investigations are ongoing to specify microbial activity along the aerosol-cloud-precipitation continuum, its variability, and to quantify its contribution to atmospheric chemical processes.

Abstract

Le site instrumenté Cézeaux-Aulnat Opme Puy de Dôme (CO-PDD) est une plateforme d'observation de l'atmosphère labellisée à l'échelle nationale par le CNRS et le Cnes, impliquée dans des réseaux internationaux pour le climat tels que GAW (Global Atmospheric Watch) et dans des infrastructures de recherche telles que Actris (Aerosol Cloud and Trace gases Research Infrastructure) ou Icos (Integrated Carbon Observation System). Composé de quatre stations de mesures in situ et par télédétection dans la région clermontoise, il produit sur le long terme des mesures de la composition atmosphérique gazeuse et particulaire, des nuages et des précipitations en incluant la dimension verticale. Sa localisation géographique lui permet d'échantillonner des masses d'air présentant des origines très diverses, dans des conditions d'ennuagement très fréquentes. Cela en fait un site exceptionnel pour caractériser la variabilité environnementale de la composition atmosphérique. The instrumented site Cézeaux-Aulnat Opme Puy de Dôme (COPDD) is an atmosphere observation platform labeled at the national level by CNRS and CNES institutes and involved in international climate networks such as GAW (Global Atmospheric Watch) and in research infrastructures such as ACTRIS (Aerosol Cloud and Trace gas Research Infrastructure) or ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System). Composed of four in situ and remote sensing measurement points around the city of Clermont-Ferrand, it produces long-term measurements of gaseous and aerosol atmospheric composition, clouds and precipitation, including the vertical dimension. Its geographical location allows various origin air masses to be sampled, in very frequent cloudy conditions. This makes it an exceptional site for characterizing the environmental variability of the atmospheric composition.

Abstract

Les nuages représentent un milieu de dissolution de nombreux composés chimiques à la fois sous la forme de gaz et de particules. Ces composés peuvent subir dans cet environnement multiphasique de nombreuses transformations complexes induites par le rayonnement solaire, les processus microphysiques ou encore l'activité des micro-organismes vivants dans les nuages. Cet article présente de façon résumée les activités d'observation et de recherche sur les nuages menées sur le site atelier du puy de Dôme au cours des 20 dernières années. Il se focalise plus particulièrement sur les développements méthodologiques tant en termes de prélèvements que de caractérisations du milieu et des processus de transformation. Ce travail est le résultat de la création d'un consortium unique regroupant des physiciens, des biologistes et des chimistes oeuvrant à une question commune autour du rôle des nuages dans les processus atmosphériques. Many chemical compounds coming from both the gaseous and particulate phases dissolve into cloud droplets. These compounds can undergo in this multiphasic environment many complex transformations induced by light, microphysical processes or even by the activity of microorganisms living in clouds. This article summarizes the observation and research activities on clouds sampled at the puy de Dôme site over the past 20 years. A particular focus is made to highlight methodological developments both in terms of sampling and characterization of the cloud medium and transformation processes occurring within it. This has been achieved by the creation of a unique consortium grouping together physicists, biologists and chemists working on a common question on the role of clouds on atmospheric processes.

Abstract

International audience; The Forests gAses aeRosols Clouds Exploratory (FARCE) campaign was conducted in March-April 2015 on the tropical island of La Réunion. For the first time, several scientific teams from different disciplines collaborated to provide reference measurements and characterization of La Réunion vegetation, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), biogenic VOCs (BVOCs), (bio)aerosols and composition of clouds, with a strong focus on the Maïdo mountain slope area. The main observations obtained during this 2-month intensive field campaign are summarized. They include characterizations of forest structure, concentrations of VOCs and precursors emitted by forests, aerosol loading and optical properties in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), formation of new particles by nucleation of gas-phase precursors, ice-nucleating particles concentrations, and biological loading in both cloud-free and cloudy conditions. Simulations and measurements confirm that the Maïdo Observatory lies within the PBL from late morning to late evening and that, when in the PBL, the main primary sources impacting the Maïdo Observatory are of marine origin via the Indian Ocean and of bio-genic origin through the dense forest cover. They also show that (i) the marine source prevails less and less while reaching the observatory; (ii) when in the PBL, depending on the lo-calization of a horizontal wind shear, the Maïdo Observatory can be affected by air masses coming directly from the ocean and passing over the Maïdo mountain slope, or coming from inland; (iii) bio-aerosols can be observed in both cloud-free and cloudy conditions at the Maïdo Observatory; (iv) BVOC emissions by the forest covering the Maïdo mountain slope can be transported upslope within clouds and are a potential cause of secondary organic aerosol formation in the aqueous phase at the Maïdo Observatory; and (v) the simulation of dynamics parameters, emitted BVOCs and cloud life cycle in the Meso-NH model are realistic, and more advanced Meso-NH simulations should use an increased horizontal resolution (100 m) to better take into account the orography and improve the simulation of the wind shear front zone within which lies the Maïdo Observatory. Using various observations and simulations, this work draws up an inventory of the in situ studies that could be performed in La Réunion and at the Maïdo Observatory. It also aims to develop scientific collaborations and to support future scientific projects in order to better understand the forest-gas-aerosol-cloud system in an insular tropical environment.

Abstract

International audience; Concentrations of 33 metal elements were determined by ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) analysis for 24 cloud water samples (corresponding to 10 cloud events) collected at the puy de Dôme station. Clouds present contrasted chemical composition with mainly marine and continental characteristics; for some cloud events, a further anthropogenic source can be superimposed on the background level. In this context, measurements of trace metals may help to evaluate the impact of anthropogenic and natural sources on the cloud and to better discriminate the origin of the air masses. The metal concentrations in the samples are low (between 16.4 µg L$^{−1}$ and 1.46 mg L$^{−1}$). This could be explained by the remoteness of the puy de Dôme site from local sources. Trace metals are then used to confirm and refine a previous sample classification. A principal component analysis (PCA) using the pH value and the concentrations of Cl$^−$, NO${_3}^−$, SO${_4}^{2−}$, Na$^+$ and NH${_4}^+$ is performed considering 24 cloud samples. This first analysis shows that 18 samples are of marine origin and 6 samples are classified as continental. The same statistical approach is used adding trace metal concentration. Zn and Mg elements are the most abundant trace metals for all clouds. A higher concentration of Cd is mainly associated to clouds from marine origins. Cu, As, Tl and Sb elements are rather found in the continental samples than in the marine ones. Mg, V, Mn and Rb elements mainly found in soil particles are also more concentrated in the samples from continental air mass. This new PCA including trace metal confirms the classification between marine and continental air masses but also indicates that one sample presenting low pH and high concentrations of SO${_4}^{2−}$, Fe, Pb and Cu could be rather attributed to a polluted event.

Abstract

International audience; Clouds are key components in Earth’s functioning. In addition of acting as obstacles to light radiations and chemical reactors, they are possible atmospheric oases for airborne microorganisms, providing water, nutrients and paths to the ground. Microbial activity was previously detected in clouds, but the microbial community that is active in situ remains unknown. Here, microbial communities in cloud water collected at puy de Dôme Mountain’s meteorological station (1465 m altitude, France) were fixed upon sampling and examined by high-throughput sequencing from DNA and RNA extracts, so as to identify active species among community members. Communities consisted of ~103−104 bacteria and archaea mL-1 and ~102−103 eukaryote cells mL-1. They appeared extremely rich, with more than 28 000 distinct species detected in bacteria and 2 600 in eukaryotes. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes largely dominated in bacteria, while eukaryotes were essentially distributed among Fungi, Stramenopiles and Alveolata. Within these complex communities, the active members of cloud microbiota were identified as Alpha- (Sphingomonadales, Rhodospirillales and Rhizobiales), Beta- (Burkholderiales) and Gamma-Proteobacteria (Pseudomonadales). These groups of bacteria usually classified as epiphytic are probably the best candidates for interfering with abiotic chemical processes in clouds, and the most prone to successful aerial dispersion.

Abstract

A new detailed aqueous phase mechanism named the Cloud Explicit Physico-chemical Scheme (CLEPS 1.0) is proposed to describe the oxidation of water soluble organic compounds resulting from isoprene oxidation. It is based on structure activity relationships (SARs) which provide global rate constants together with branching ratios for HO⋅ abstraction and addition on atmospheric organic compounds. The GROMHE SAR allows the evaluation of Henry's law constants for undocumented organic compounds. This new aqueous phase mechanism is coupled with the MCM v3.3.1 gas phase mechanism through a mass transfer scheme between gas phase and aqueous phase. The resulting multiphase mechanism has then been implemented in a model based on the Dynamically Simple Model for Atmospheric Chemical Complexity (DSMACC) using the Kinetic PreProcessor (KPP) that can serve to analyze data from cloud chamber experiments and field campaigns. The simulation of permanent cloud under low-NOx conditions describes the formation of oxidized monoacids and diacids in the aqueous phase as well as a significant influence on the gas phase chemistry and composition and shows that the aqueous phase reactivity leads to an efficient fragmentation and functionalization of organic compounds.

Abstract

Chemical reactions in clouds lead to oxidation processes driven by radicals (mainly HO⚫, NO3⚫, or HO2⚫) or strong oxidants such as H2O2, O3, nitrate, and nitrite. Among those species, hydrogen peroxide plays a central role in the cloud chemistry by driving its oxidant capacity. In cloud droplets, H2O2 is transformed by microorganisms which are metabolically active. Biological activity can therefore impact the cloud oxidant capacity. The present article aims at highlighting the interactions between H2O2 and microorganisms within the cloud system. First, experiments were performed with selected strains studied as a reference isolated from clouds in microcosms designed to mimic the cloud chemical composition, including the presence of light and iron. Biotic and abiotic degradation rates of H2O2 were measured and results showed that biodegradation was the most efficient process together with the photo-Fenton process. H2O2 strongly impacted the microbial energetic state as shown by adenosine triphosphate (ATP) measurements in the presence and absence of H2O2. This ATP depletion was not due to the loss of cell viability. Secondly, correlation studies were performed based on real cloud measurements from 37 cloud samples collected at the PUY station (1465 m a.s.l., France). The results support a strong correlation between ATP and H2O2 concentrations and confirm that H2O2 modulates the energetic metabolism of the cloud microbiome. The modulation of microbial metabolism by H2O2 concentration could thus impact cloud chemistry, in particular the biotransformation rates of carbon compounds, and consequently can perturb the way the cloud system is modifying the global atmospheric chemistry.

Abstract

International audience; Long-term monitoring of the chemical composition of clouds (73 cloud events representing 199 individual samples) sampled at the puy de Dôme (pdD) station (France) was performed between 2001 and 2011. Physicochemical parameters, as well as the concentrations of the major organic and inorganic constituents, were measured and analyzed by multicomponent statistical analysis. Along with the corresponding back-trajectory plots, this allowed for distinguishing four different categories of air masses reaching the summit of the pdD: polluted, continental, marine and highly marine. The statistical analysis led to the determination of criteria (concentrations of inorganic compounds, pH) that differentiate each category of air masses. Highly marine clouds exhibited high concentrations of Na+ and Cl−; the marine category presented lower concentration of ions but more elevated pH. Finally, the two remaining clusters were classified as "continental" and "polluted"; these clusters had the second-highest and highest levels of NH4+, NO3−, and SO24−, respectively. This unique data set of cloud chemical composition is then discussed as a function of this classification. Total organic carbon (TOC) is significantly higher in polluted air masses than in the other categories, which suggests additional anthropogenic sources. Concentrations of carboxylic acids and carbonyls represent around 10% of the organic matter in all categories of air masses and are studied for their relative importance. Iron concentrations are significantly higher for polluted air masses and iron is mainly present in its oxidation state (+II) in all categories of air masses. Finally, H2O2 concentrations are much more varied in marine and highly marine clouds than in polluted clouds, which are characterized by the lowest average concentration of H2O2. This data set provides concentration ranges of main inorganic and organic compounds for modeling purposes on multiphase cloud chemistry.

Abstract

International audience; Currently, cloud chemistry models are including more detailed and explicit multiphase mechanisms based on laboratory experiments that determine such values as kinetic constants, stability constants of complexes and hydration constants. However, these models are still subject to many uncertainties related to the aqueous chemical mechanism they used. Particularly, the role of oxidants such as iron and hydrogen peroxide in the oxidative capacity of the cloud aqueous phase has typically never been validated against laboratory experimental data. To fill this gap, we adapted the M2C2 model (Model of Multiphase Cloud Chemistry) to simulate irradiation experiments on synthetic aqueous solutions under controlled conditions (e.g., pH, temperature, light intensity) and for actual cloud water samples. Various chemical compounds that purportedly contribute to the oxidative budget in cloud water (i.e., iron, oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide: H2O2) were considered. Organic compounds (oxalic, formic and acetic acids) were taken into account as target species because they have the potential to form iron complexes and are good indicators of the oxidative capacity of the cloud aqueous phase via their oxidation in this medium. The range of concentrations for all of the chemical compounds evaluated was representative of in situ measurements. Numerical outputs were compared with experimental data that consisted of a time evolution of the concentrations of the target species. The chemical mechanism in the model describing the "oxidative engine" of the HxOy/iron (HxOy = H2O2, HO2radical dot/O2radical dot− and HOradical dot) chemical system was consistent with laboratory measurements. Thus, the degradation of the carboxylic acids evaluated was closely reproduced by the model. However, photolysis of the Fe(C2O4)+ complex needs to be considered in cloud chemistry models for polluted conditions (i.e., acidic pH) to correctly reproduce oxalic acid degradation. We also show that iron and formic acid lead to a stable complex whose photoreactivity has currently not been investigated. The updated aqueous chemical mechanism was compared with data from irradiation experiments using natural cloud water. The new reactions considered in the model (i.e., iron complex formation with oxalic and formic acids) correctly reproduced the experimental observations.

International audience; In the first part of the work, we investigated the reactivity toward photogenerated hydroxyl radicals (OH) of seven monocarboxylic acids and six dicarboxylic acids found in natural cloud water. This leads to the proposition of a schematic degradation pathway linking glutaric acid (C5) to complete mineralization into CO2. We report a detailed mechanism on the succinic acid reactivity toward OH leading to the formation of malonic, glyoxylic and consequently oxalic acids and a comparison with reported pathways proposed by the CAPRAM (Chemical Aqueous Phase RAdical Mechanism) is discussed. We also investigated the photooxidation of formic acid under atmospherically relevant conditions leading to the possible formation of oxalic acid via radical mediated recombination. The second part focuses on the polychromatic irradiation (closed to solar irradiation) of a collected cloud aqueous phase showing that irradiation of cloud water leads to the formation of both formic and acetic acids. Carboxylic acid formation increases in the presence of photogenerated hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide, showing that photooxidation could play a key role in the formation of carboxylic acids under atmospherically relevant conditions.

International audience; In the present study, we investigated the correlation between the hydroxyl radical formation rate (R.(OH)) and the degradation of a pesticide (mesotrione) in synthetic cloud water solutions and in two real atmospheric cloud waters collected at the top of puy de Dome station (France). Using terephthalic acid as the hydroxyl radical chemical probe, we established the linear correlation between the photogenerated hydroxyl radical under polychromatic wavelengths and the pesticide degradation rate: R-meso (M s(-1)) = (1.61 +/- 0.15) x 10(-1) R.(OH) (m s(-1)). Moreover, the formation rate of hydroxyl radical in two natural cloud waters was estimated considering H2O2 and NO3- and the difference between the predicted values and those experimentally obtained could be attributed to the presence of other photochemical sources: iron-complexes and total organic matter.
