Tanning of leather for clothing, shoes and handbags uses potentially harmful chemicals that are often run off into local water supplies or require a large carbon footprint to safely recover these pollutants. In regions of the world with significant leather production this can lead to a significant environmental impact. However recent studies have suggested that leather can instead be tanned using a combination of electron beams in a process inspired by the industrial crosslinking of polymers, to drastically reduce the quantity of wastewater produced in the process; thereby resulting in a reduced environmental impact as well as potential cost savings on wastewater treatment. The Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) study investigates means of exploiting the potential of the CERN accelerator complex to complement the laboratory’s scientific programme at the main Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. The LHC fixed-target (FT) working group studies new experiments at beam energies up to 7 TeV. One of the proposed experiments is based on a bent crystal, part of the collimation hierarchy, to extract secondary halo particles and steer them onto a target. A second bent crystal immediately downstream of the target is used to study electric and magnetic dipole moments of short-lived baryons. The possibility to install a test stand in the LHC off-momentum collimation Insertion Region (IR3) to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of this challenging scheme is currently under investigation. The integration of a spectrometer magnet into the present layout is particularly critical. The Cockcroft Beamline is being designed to transport 1 GeV electrons from a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) to an undulator at the Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators (SCAPA) in Glasgow, UK. To demonstrate undulator radiation in the X-ray spectral region and potentially free electron laser (FEL) gain, electrons should be transported between the LWFA and the undulators with high fidelity. In this paper we present the design of an adjustable beam line to transport LWFA electrons to the undulator for a range of energies, from 0.5 GeV to 1 GeV, while preserving the electron beam properties and matching the undulator-beam coupling., Proceedings of the 10th Int. The Cockcroft Beamline is to be installed at the Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators (SCAPA). The beamline is designed to transport 1 GeV electrons from a laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) source to a pair of transverse gradient undulators. The project aims to produce X-ray undulator radiation in the first phase and free-electron laser (FEL) radiation in the second phase. The total beamline will be less than 23 m long, thus the Cockcroft Beamline has the potential to be the UK's first compact X-ray FEL. Laser wakefield acceleration, together with other types of novel acceleration techniques, has seen considerable progress of late. Together with this progress comes a question, which has only recently started to be addressed, of how to transport and utilise such beams. This is a challenge because of the high initial divergence of these beams. Compact storage rings require a compact acceleration solution. We propose the use of a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) as an injector for compact electron storage rings to produce synchrotron radiation. In particular, we study the injection of 0.7 GeV and 3 GeV electrons into the DIAMOND storage ring and consider implications for future storage ring design. Whilst laser-based acceleration is well-known as a driver for future electron-positron colliders and future free-electron lasers, here we propose it is also advantageous to provide electrons for 3rd-generation storage rings. The electron beams produced by LWFAs have a naturally very small emittance around 1 nm and moderate energy spread of a few percent. Combining these beam parameters with the compact size of a LWFA makes them highly favourable compared to traditional linac or booster synchrotron injector chains.chains., Proceedings of the 8th Int.
