1. Improved Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Properties of MWCNT–PMMA Composites Using Layered Structures

Abstract

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of multi-walled carbon nanotubes–polymethyl methacrylate (MWCNT–PMMA) composites prepared by two different techniques was measured. EMI SE up to 40 dB in the frequency range 8.2–12.4 GHz (X-band) was achieved by stacking seven layers of 0.3-mm thick MWCNT–PMMA composite films compared with 30 dB achieved by stacking two layers of 1.1-mm thick MWCNT–PMMA bulk composite. The characteristic EMI SE graphs of the composites and the mechanism of shielding have been discussed. SE in this frequency range is found to be dominated by absorption. The mechanical properties (tensile, flexural strength and modulus) of the composites were found to be comparable or better than the pure polymer. The studies therefore show that the composite can be used as structurally strong EMI shielding material.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta (0vßß) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its 2nd result of the search for 0vßß with a TeO2 exposure of 372.5 kg·yr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a 130Te 0vßß decay half-life of 1.7 · 1025 yr. We find no evidence for 0vßß decay and set a 90% C.I. (credibility interval) Bayesian lower limit of 3.2 · 1025 yr on the 130Te 0vßß decay half-life. In this work, we present the current status of CUORE's search for 0vßß, as well as review the detector performance. Finally, we give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the 130Te two neutrino double-beta (2vßß) decay half-life.

Abstract

The muon anomalous magnetic moment has been measured in a new experiment at Brookhaven. Polarized muons were stored in a superferric ring, and the angular frequency difference, omega(a), between the spin precession and orbital frequencies was determined by measuring the time distribution of high-energy decay positrons. The ratio R of omega(a) to the Larmor precession frequency of free protons, omega(p), in the storage-ring magnetic field was measured. We find R = 3.707 220(48) X 10(-3). With mu(mu)/mu(p) = 3.183 345 47(47) this gives a(mu+) = 1 165 925(15) X 10(-9) (+/-13 ppm), in good agreement with the previous CERN measurements for mu(+) and mu(-) and of approximately the same precision.

The ratio of the deuteron to proton structure functions is measured at very small Bjorken x (down to 10-6) and for Q2>0.001 GeV2 from scattering of 470 GeV muons on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets.
