This essay focuses on the work of New York‐based artist and poet Candace Hill‐Montgomery. In 1979, Hill‐Montgomery described her work as changing ‘the containment we all live within’, pointing both to the social and political investments of her practice, and to her formal transition from making art in her studio to making installations in public, often from found materials and detritus. Her desire for recognition and understanding across difference at a moment of rising neo‐conservatism was an investment in social and subjective repair. I trace this impulse across ‘environmental sculptures’, collages and artist's books made between 1979 and 1983, articulating a general impetus to be against containment that, I argue, is also instructive as an art‐historical method.

This article analyzes how narratives about the COVID-19 pandemic are beginning to memorialize lives lost in the crisis. It juxtaposes the author’s personal experience of the loss of family members with emerging memoirs by South Asian women to explore the diversity of genres like the lyric essay and the graphic memoir that memorialize lives lost to COVID-19. While acknowledging that the current pandemic and its effects are far from over, the essay argues that these memoirs are a conscious attempt to mourn and thereby restore the humanity of lives robbed of traditional acts of remembrance due to the isolation and bureaucracy of laws governing COVID-19 deaths and funerals. These texts by Barkha Dutt, Kay Sohini, and Jhumpa Lahiri are exceptional because the great majority of deaths during this time have been consigned to erasure, lack of documentation, or censorship. These texts are resisting the dominant trend to leave the pandemic behind and resume normal lives. By committing to grief instead of a facile recuperation, these memoirs are not just charting a private path of healing but also transforming private grief into a statement of shared suffering and solidarity, even when the pandemic has affected individuals differently based on stratifications of race, class, and privilege.

El presente artículo se centra en algunos ensayos realizados por M. Delgado en torno al espacio urbano. Desde la antropología social, su trabajo escruta con mirada crítica el resultado de la planificación urbana de la que ha sido objeto Barcelona, para concluir que numerosas ciudades contemporáneas se rigen por los mismos esquemas de acción. En defensa de la diversidad, indaga entre los lenguajes al uso mediante un minucioso análisis de los significados que encierran. Apoyándose en una escritura que se balancea entre el rigor científico, una subjetividad a flor de piel, múltiples lecturas y un perfecto dominio de las figuras retóricas, elabora una poética en la que el factor social es protagonista. Como actor social, acude a las posibilidades del ensayo, tan prolijo para des-velar opacidades, colaborando en una sociopoética urbana que se esfuerza, ofreciendo claras muestras de su capacidad creativa, por recuperar el espacio público y el ágora prometida por las democracias neoliberales. This paper aims to offer a preliminary analysis of a set of essays by M. Delgado dedicated to the study of urban space. Coming from social anthropology, his work critically examines the consequences of urban planning in a city like Barcelona to find patterns of action that are equally present in many contemporary cities. Defender of diversity, he analyzes in depth the meaning contained in the institutional discourse. Based on a writing that combines scientific rigor, numerous readings, skin-deep subjectivity and a perfect command of rhetorical figures, he develops a poetics where the social factor is decisive. As a social actor, he resorts to the possibilities of the essay to reveal the opaque and collaborates in the creation of an urban sociopoetic that is exercised, while offering clues to his creative capacity, to recover public space and the agora promised by neoliberal democracies. Cet article vise à offrir une ébauche d’analyse d’un ensemble d’essais de M. Delgado consacrés à l’étude de l’espace urbain. Issu de l’anthropologie sociale, son travail scrute de manière critique les conséquences de la planification urbaine sur une ville comme Barcelone pour y trouver des schémas d’action présents dans de nombreuses villes contemporaines. Défenseur de la diversité, il analyse en profondeur la signification contenue dans le discours institutionnel. S’appuyant sur une écriture qui réunit rigueur scientifique, nombreuses lectures, une subjectivité à fleur de peau et une parfaite maîtrise des figures de rhétorique, il élabore une poétique où le facteur social est déterminant. En tant qu’acteur social, il recourt aux possibilités de l’essai pour révéler l’opacité et collabore dans la création d’une sociopoétique urbaine qui s’exerce, tout en offrant des indices de sa capacité créatrice, à récupérer l’espace public et l’agora promis par les démocraties néolibérales.

La production de ce numéro a été motivée par le peu d'attention accordé aux oeuvres "mineures" de Maryse Condé. Les contributeurs se sont penchés notamment sur les ouvrages de Condé destinés à la jeunesse ainsi qu'à ses pièces de théâtre. Ils ont fait ressortir non seulement la richesse et diversité que ces ouvrages apportent à l'ensemble du discours condéen, mais aussi les problèmes et préoccupations qui sous-tendent la façon particulière dont Condé a conçu son rôle d'écrivaine francophone dans un contexte postcolonial.

This article explores how arguments are made in student essays through the use of writing and visual resources. The data set comprises 54 essays with a passing grade from students in their final year of upper secondary school in Sweden. The data is analysed using a multimodal approach to knowledge representation on arguments in essays, involving analysis of textual composition and content in both written text and visual resources. The study gives an insight into how students design essays in relation to academic requirements, how their arguments realise epistemological commitments, and what affordances are given through the use of writing and visual resources. The results reveal that academic argumentation varies considerably between the essays. There is an overrepresentation of written and declarative knowledge in the essays, where the arguments are grounded in various web-based sources, and visualisations are used for making conceptualisation and classification more salient in writing. Both written and visual resources offer affordances in the making of arguments on the bases of the modes for communication. This article concludes that there are many high demands of knowledge defined for the task of preparing for higher education, which are not easily represented in the students’ arguments in essays.

When carrying concealed handguns on campus was legalised at The University of Texas (UT) at Austin in 2015, students and faculty positioned themselves in relation to the new law in very different ways, ranging from large demonstrations and the use of various types of rhetoric to non-vocal representations and deliberate silence. This essay examines an important transitional moment in the educational environment by focusing on the respective relationships and modes of expression—or articulations—of the affected parties regarding the issue of firearms on university premises, as these reflected opposing camps within the academic community. Drawing on interviews and quantitative research, and proposing a novel theoretical frame to understand the complex subject of guns, this essay examines the polemics, polarisation, and power dynamics around Campus Carry at UT Austin.

This study examines the frequency, meanings, lexico-grammatical and discursive features of the pragmatic marker in fact in an L1 subcorpus of the British Academic Written English corpus and in a learner corpus of essays written by Italian university students. One of four meanings, ‘contrast’, ‘specification’, ‘factuality’ and ‘support’, was assigned to each instance of in fact in both corpora. Similarities and differences emerged in the use of this pragmatic marker. All four meanings are present in both corpora; however, the ‘contrast’ and ‘specification’ meanings occur more often in the L1 corpus, while the ‘factuality’ and ‘support’ meanings occur more often in the L2 corpus. These findings suggest that the Italian learners are not fully aware of the multiple meanings of in fact.

We use data from the synergistic mindsets intervention to find how language in student essays might correlate with self-reported stress levels n= 2000. We use word count based approaches, topic modeling, and word embedding based methods to find the linguistic patterns that correlate with stress levels. Our results show that in comparison to students who cope poorly with stress, those that cope well make greater use of negative over positive emotions, past and present tense over future tense, higher cognitive processing words, and more action over bodily sensation words in their writing. Our text classification models predict stress appraisals with an accuracy of 68 ± 0.4%. However, the length of the text students write is a major confounder in all our results. We discuss the text length as a confounder along with our other qualitative findings in relation to previous linguistic studies of mindfulness and stress.

En el presente trabajo se propone una comprensión de los Ensayos de Montaigne como un ejercicio de sí que busca transformar la verdad en ethos: una vida fiel con un mundo infundado y en devenir es la única vida vivible. Para ello se discuten las interpretaciones de la obra desde la perspectiva del autoconocimiento que han sido propuestas en el siglo XX, sirviéndonos de las lecturas de Horkheimer y Merleau-Ponty como hilos conductores. El primero elabora una interpretación externa que se basa en la idea de que los Ensayos son un instrumento político al servicio del conservadurismo. Por otro lado, Merleau-Ponty propone una interpretación interna que privilegia la comprensión de la filosofía de los Ensayos como una concepción metafísica que transforma la teoría de la verdad. A través de la discusión de ambas es posible recorrer las posiciones más importantes defendidas sobre el pensamiento de Montaigne desde una perspectiva más amplia., This paper proposes an understanding of Montaigne’s Essays as an exercise of oneself that seeks to transform truth into ethos: a faithful life with an unfounded world and in perpetual change is the only life that can be lived. In order to do so, the interpretations of the work are discussed from the perspective of self-knowledge that have been proposed in the 20th century, using the readings of Horkheimer and Merleau-Ponty as guiding threads. The first one elaborates an external interpretation based on the idea that the Essays are a political instrument at the service of conservatism. On the other hand, Merleau-Ponty proposes an internal interpretation that privileges the understanding of the philosophy of the Essays as a metaphysical conception that transforms the theory of truth. Through the discussion of both it is possible to go through the most important positions defended on Montaigne’s thought from a broader perspective.

Este artículo propone abordar algunas de las singularidades de la escritura ensayística de Néstor Perlongher entramadas en un cruce entre la labor académica y la traducción de poesía. A partir de su traducción de poemas del paulista Roberto Piva incluidos en sus ensayos de antropología urbana, podrá verse de qué manera el argentino cuestiona los parámetros epistemológicos y disciplinares con los que eran abordados los fenómenos sociales brasileños de los que él mismo fue testigo. Perlongher establece así un diálogo productivo con el autor de Paranóia (1963) del que se vuelve un contemporáneo y encuentra un camino para revisar el presente brasileño desafiándolo con una escritura que logra poner en jaque los usos legítimos del cuerpo y las premisas de construcción de conocimiento. Finalmente, para retomar el interrogante acerca del modo en que la escena cultural porteña leyó su producción en ciencias sociales, se repara en la recepción de uno de sus ensayos en la revista argentina La letra A. The aim of this article is to study some of the singularities of Néstor Perlongher’s essay writing developed through an intersection between his academic work and the translation ofpoetry. By his translation of the São Paulo writer Roberto Piva, included in his essays on urban anthropology, the Argentine sought to question the epistemological and disciplinary parameters to approach the Brazilian social phenomena that he himself witnessed. Perlongher establishes a productive dialogue with the author ofParanóia (1963) of whom he becomes a contemporary and finds a way to review the Brazilian present by challenging it with a writing that succeeds in shaking, at the same time, the legitimate uses of the body and the premises of knowledge construction. Finally, in order to interrogate the way in which the Buenos Aires cultural scene read his social science production, this paper focuses on thereception of one of his essays published in the Argentine magazineLa letra A.

We are the Center for Surgical Health (CSH), an academic community partnership that supports, educates, and advocates for vulnerable Philadelphians with surgical diseases, founded in 2016 by Dr. Jon B. Morris, a leader in surgical education and a general surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. Alan Herbst, a current third-year Penn general surgery resident. At the time, Dr. Morris, raised in a Reform Jewish household, had been participating in an RCIA Program to convert to Catholicism. The mission of providing surgery to uninsured patients, primarily undocumented individuals, by helping them obtain insurance and see Penn providers was seen by Dr. Morris as a form of Catholic charity, which he has continued to remain dedicated to as his faith in Jesus Christ has deepened. Dr. Herbst, now Associate Director of Clinics for the CSH, recalls working with Dr. Morris as a sub-intern during his conversion, beginning with passion and a neon poster board inviting people to “See the Surgeon.” Since that time, the CSH has grown from an organization with 10 volunteers, called “personal patient navigators,” who provide insurance support and advocacy at every step of the perioperative continuum, to one with over 50, who have now seen 156 patients and assisted in providing 49 needed procedures. Much of this growth has been brought about through the dedication and vision of Dr. Matthew Goldshore, the Deputy Director of the CSH and a fifth-year Penn general surgery resident, as well as Dr. Carrie Z. Morales, Associate Deputy Director of the CSH and a recent Perelman School of Medicine graduate. Through their leadership, and the talent and commitment of other members of the CSH board, overseen by Director Dr. Morris, the CSH now has policy and research divisions, a surgical equity curriculum, and continues to develop new ways of providing better care.

Some of the challenges that the study of Unamuno’s work presents is its prolixity and the enormous variety of themes that it brings together. Besides, as for the essay part, in its publication the tendency has been to disseminate it in different journals, both national and international. This has led to some texts being forgotten for decades, outside of the Complete Works, and, finally, not taken into account in the different studies on Unamuno’s work. In this paper, we rescue a forgotten text, «Más sobre la europeización», and we study it along with its precedent, «Sobre la europeización», analyzing the common points with Del sentimiento trágico de la vida. With this textual study, we present the need to complete Unamuno’s Complete Works to guarantee a more precise approach to his work, not only from a genetic perspective, but also from a comparative one.

Despite broad scientific consensus that sustainable use of wildlife can enhance conservation efforts, ethical concerns have led some community groups to oppose use of wild animals. Voicing those concerns is legitimate, but underlying philosophical bias should not influence science‐based analysis and interpretation. We argue that philosophical biases are common in the scientific literature on trade in wildlife. The critically important case of bias surrounding the use of reptile leathers for luxury fashion illustrates the problem. Based on analysis of official seizures of fashion products made from wildlife, a recent study inferred that criminal activity (as inferred by noncompliance with regulations) was common and increasing and, hence, that authorities needed to adopt more stringent restrictions on the trade. In fact, the conclusions of that study are artifacts of pseudoreplication (e.g., multiple counts of single violations) and biased sampling (e.g., focus on companies with high rates of error) and run directly opposite to actual patterns in the data. As a proportion of overall trade, rates of noncompliance are exceptionally low (, Article Impact Statement: Philosophical bias can undermine conservation. We call for increased scrutiny of science concerning the emotive topic of wildlife trade.

Working at the intersection of queer feminist affect studies and queer Indigenous studies, this thesis focuses on theorizations and enactments of queer Indigenous joy in Billy-Ray Belcourt's A History of My Brief Body, Gregory Scofield's Love Medicine and One Song, and Joshua Whitehead's Jonny Appleseed. It explores how these contemporary texts uniquely emphasize the relational queer Indigenous body’s tenacious capacity for care and love in order to enact more breathable, collective, and ultimately joyful modes of embodied life, even amid the stifling settler colonial present. I argue that, in doing so, these authors foster joy as a rebellious and healing affective orientation that opposes injurious colonial constructions of queer Indigenous embodiment and contributes to the future-bearing project of radical Indigenous resurgence. By examining these authors' invaluable interventions with joy, which is largely an under-acknowledged positive affect, this thesis aims to convey why the young but burgeoning field of queer Indigenous literature merits far more critical attention than it has received thus far.

This article aims to discuss some conditions for a tributary identity of composite cultures in the Americas, based on the reading of the Um defeito de cor by Ana Maria Gonçalves (2009) and O crime do cais do Valongo by Eliana Alves Cruz (2018). We organize our dialogue procedures between the mentioned novels taking the slave ship as a common-place (GLISSANT, 2005). Our argument is based on the hypothesis that the expression of na enunciation from the hold of the slave ship in the novels under analysis enables us to read them as digenesis (GLISSANT; 2014, 1997). Este artigo visa discutir algumas condições a uma identidade tributária das culturas compósitas nas Américas, a partir da leitura de Um defeito de cor de Ana Maria Gonçalves (2009) e O crime do cais do Valongo de Eliana Alves Cruz (2018). Organizamos nossos procedimentos de diálogo entre os romances mencionados tomando o navio negreiro como um lugar-comum (GLISSANT, 2005). Nossa argumentação parte da hipótese de que a expressão de uma enunciação desde o porão do navio negreiro nos romances em análise nos habilita a lê-los enquanto digêneses (GLISSANT; 2014, 1997).

Este artículo tiene como objetivo estudiar de qué manera el campo literario post-15-M ha sido modificado por el feminismo, después de demostrar la imbricación del empuje actual del movimiento feminista en España y el del movimiento 15-M. Destaca en particular la presencia de un pensamiento feminista, desde la vulnerabilidad, el rechazo a la autoridad, el yo encarnado y la pelea por ser escuchada en textos a menudo híbridos que navegan entre el ensayo, la (auto)ficción, el periodismo y la no ficción. Cet article cherche à étudier de quelle manière le champ littéraire post-15-M (post-mouvement des Indignés) a été modifié par le féminisme, après avoir montré l’imbrication existante entre la force actuelle du mouvement féministe en Espagne et celle du mouvement 15-M. Il s’arrête en particulier sur la présence d’une pensée féministe, depuis la vulnérabilité, le refus de l’autorité, le je incarné et la lutte pour être écoutée dans des textes souvent hybrides, qui naviguent entre l’essai, la fiction ou l’autofiction, le journalisme et la non fiction. This article aims to study how the post-15-M literary field has been modified by feminism, after demonstrating the intertwining of the current thrust of the feminist movement in Spain and that of the 15-M movement. It highlights in particular the presence of feminist thought, from vulnerability, the rejection of authority, the embodied self and the fight to be heard in often hybrid texts that navigate between essay, (self-)fiction, journalism and non-fiction.

Since Plato, death has been a recurring theme in the history of philosophy and the Hellenistic schools of thought. The "death" subject became a daily reflection particularly in Epicureanism and in Stoicism, from which not only the term meditatio mortis comes from, but an entire literature, including the writings made in the medieval times that had the final moment of life as their central point. Thus, in the 16th century, the period when Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) lived his life, meditation on death was a rhetorical topos. Nevertheless, his Essays approach the theme of death not only from a literary standpoint, but as a daily meditation, as a spiritual exercise. In this perspective, this article suggests that Montaigne, far beyond a rhetorical approach, attempts to recover the most original meaning that the Hellenistic schools of thought gave to meditatio mortis, taking this concept as a preparation for life itself, as a constant way of observing the present, faced with an imminent scenario of various deaths, such as the Black Death epidemic and the civil war in Montaigne troubled times. Desde Platão, a morte tem sido um tema recorrente na história da filosofia e as escolas helenísticas (sobretudo o epicurismo e o estoicismo) fizeram dela uma reflexão diária, de onde advém não só o termo meditatio mortis, mas toda uma literatura, inclusive durante o medievo, que tem como centralidade o momento final da vida. Assim, no século XVI, período no qual se encontra o nosso autor, Michel de Montaigne, a meditação sobre a morte era um topos retórico, mas os Ensaios abordam o tema da morte não somente do ponto de vista literário, mas como uma meditação diária, como um exercício espiritual. Deste modo, o nosso artigo pretende sugerir que Montaigne, muito além de uma abordagem retórica, tenta recuperar o sentido mais originário que as escolas helenísticas davam à meditatio mortis, tomando-a como uma preparação para a própria vida, como uma atenção constante ao presente, diante de um cenário eminente de mortes, com as epidemias de peste negra e guerra civil.

In its new charter, the Vatican calls on healthcare workers to be ministers of life. This is a challenging task and a most noble mission. The mission field itself is the vast, complex and mysterious field of suffering (Pope John Paul II). For Catholic healthcare professionals, it is not so much to have a mission, but to be a mission on this earth, as Pope Francis often reminds us. The daily mission needs to be nourished by a commensurate spirituality. Each deed can be offered to the Lord as part of our response. Healthcare professionals may feel called to specific mission fields too, such as working to reduce the culture of gun violence or to promote the culture of life. The ongoing formation of conscience is a vital prerequisite, so we can continually respond to the novel ethical challenges that progress in technology and medicine inevitably bring. May we each respond enthusiastically to the call to mission: “Here I am Lord, send me!” (Isaiah 6:8).

The legacy of J.-B. J. Fourier, a pioneer Egyptologist and premier mathematician and physicist of his time, in crystallography and many other scientific fields is reviewed in the context of nearly two centuries having passed since his landmark publication on The Analytical Theory of Heat (1822). The legacy of Fourier’s work in crystallography and many other scientific fields is reviewed with an emphasis on current developments in the study of nonequilibrium thermodynamics., The importance of the Fourier transform as a fundamental tool for crystallo­graphy is well known in the field. However, the complete legacy of Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768–1830) as a pioneer Egyptologist and premier mathematician and physicist of his time, and the implications of his work in other scientific fields, is less well known. Significantly, his theoretical and experimental work on phenomena related to the transmission of heat founded the mathematical study of irreversible phenomena and introduced the flow of time in physico-chemical processes and geology, with its implications for biological evolution. Fourier’s insights are discussed in contrast to the prevalent notion of reversible dynamic time in the early 20th century, which was dominated by Albert Einstein’s (1875–1953) theory of general relativity versus the philosophical notion of durée proposed by the French philosopher Henri-Louis Bergson (1859–1941). The current status of the mathematical description of irreversible processes by Ilya Romanovich Prigogine (1917–2003) is briefly discussed as part of the enduring legacy of the pioneering work of J.-B. J. Fourier, first established nearly two centuries ago, in numerous scientific endeavors.

Harrowing stories reported in the media describe Covid‐19 ravaging through families. This essay reports professional experiences of this phenomenon, family clustering, as encountered during the pandemic's spread across Southern California. We identify three ethical challenges following from it: Family clustering impedes shared decision‐making by reducing available surrogate decision‐makers for incapacitated patients, increases the emotional burdens of surrogate decision‐makers, and exacerbates health disparities for and the suffering of people of color at increased likelihood of experiencing family clustering. We propose that, in response to these challenges, efforts in advance care planning be expanded, emotional support offered to surrogates and family members be increased, more robust state guidance be issued on ethical decision‐making for unrepresented patients, ethics consultation be increased in the setting of conflict following from family clustering dynamics, and health care professionals pay more attention to systemic and personal racial biases and inequities that affect patient care and the surrogate experience.

Diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI/EDI) are pressing issues in chemistry and the natural sciences. In this Essay we share how an area‐specific approach is “calling in” the community so that it can act to address EDI issues, and support those who are marginalised. Women In Supramolecular Chemistry (WISC) is an international network that aims to support equality, diversity, and inclusion within supramolecular chemistry. WISC has taken a field‐specific approach using qualitative research methods with scientists to identify the support that is needed and the problems the supramolecular community needs to address. The bibliography of literary criticism and essays (articles, reviews, literary portraits and parallels, critical and biographical essays, etc.) by Arkady Semyonovich Dolinin (1880–1968), first published here, gives an idea of the field of interest of a great Soviet literary critics before the beginning of his scholarly activity, in the first decades of the XX century. The paper traces the path of Dolinin - literary critic, his appeal to the classical (F.M. Dostoevsky, L.N. Tolstoy, A.I. Herzen, etc.) and modern (A.P. Chekhov, B.K. Zaitsev, F. Sologub, D.S. Merezhkovsky, etc.) literature, his artistic and aesthetic preferences (from realism to modernism), and his religious and philosophical quest against the background of social and political struggle during the First World War, the Revolution and the Civil War. The paper gives an analysis of Dolinin's method: biographical and psychological approach, Critical attitude to the sociological (“pypinism”) and formal- aesthetic (“shklovskism”) methods, comments on the ideological and creative relations with S.A. Vengerov, his teacher at Petrograd University. Special attention is paid to Dolinin's intensive critical work in 1918 –1920 in the Arkhangelsk newspaper Renaissance of the North, where he chronicled Russian literary life at a historical turning point, reflecting on the works of V.V. Rozanov, L.N. Andreev, A.M. Gorky, A.M. Remizov, A.A. Blok, etc. An important achievement of Dolinin was the discovery of young, still unknown talents: L.M. Leonov, B.V. Shergin, A.V. Tufanov.

The social license to operate framework considers how society grants or withholds informal permission for resource extractors to exploit publicly owned resources. We developed a modified model, which we refer to as the social license to hunt (SLH). In it we similarly consider hunters as operators, given that wildlife are legally considered public resources in North America and Europe. We applied the SLH model to examine the controversial hunting of large carnivores, which are frequently killed for trophies. Killing for trophies is widespread, but undertaken by a minority of hunters, and can pose threats to the SLH for trophy‐seeking carnivore hunters and potentially beyond. Societal opposition to large carnivore hunting relates not only to conservation concerns but also to misalignment between killing for trophies and dominant public values and attitudes concerning the treatment of animals. We summarized cases related to the killing of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos), wolves (Canis lupus), and other large carnivores in Canada, the United States, and Europe to illustrate how opposition to large carnivore hunting, now expressed primarily on social media, can exert rapid and significant pressure on policy makers and politicians. Evidence of the potential for transformative change to wildlife management and conservation includes proposed and realized changes to legislation, business practice, and wildlife policy, including the banning of some large carnivore hunts. Given that policy is ultimately shaped by societal values and attitudes, research gaps include developing increased insight into public support of various hunting policies beyond that derived from monitoring of social media and public polling. Informed by increased evidence, the SLH model can provide a conceptual foundation for predicting the likelihood of transient versus enduring changes to wildlife conservation policy and practice for a wide variety of taxa and contexts., Article impact statement: A social license to hunt model can improve understanding of how opposition to carnivore hunting can shape policy development.

Although coexistence with wildlife is a key goal of conservation, little is known about it or how to study it. By coexistence we mean a sustainable though dynamic state in which humans and wildlife coadapt to sharing landscapes, where human interactions with wildlife are effectively governed to ensure wildlife populations persist in socially legitimate ways that ensure tolerable risk levels. Problems that arise from current conflict-oriented framing of human-wildlife interactions include reinforcing a human-nature dichotomy as fundamentally oppositional, suggesting coexistence requires the absence of conflict, and skewing research and management toward direct negative impacts over indirect impacts and positive aspects of living with wildlife. Human behavior toward wildlife is framed as rational calculus of costs and benefits, sidelining emotional and cultural dimensions of these interactions. Coexistence is less studied due to unfamiliarity with relevant methodologies, including qualitative methods, self-reflexivity and ethical rigor, and constraints on funding and time. These challenges are illustrated with examples from fieldwork in India and Africa. We recommend a basic approach to case studies aimed at expanding the scope of inquiries into human-wildlife relations beyond studies of rational behavior and quantification of costs and benefits of wildlife to humans.Replanteamiento del Estudio de la Coexistencia Humano-Fauna Resumen A pesar de que la coexistencia con la fauna es una meta de suma importancia para la conservación, todavía se conoce muy poco sobre ella y cómo estudiarla. In this Photo Essay, photographs are combined with drawings collected in Burkina Faso in the years following the 2014–2016 Ebola outbreak. Portraits of bats are shown. The blacklisting of these animals following the recommendations of health authorities collides with local realities, where it is not possible to talk about bats in a ‘general’ sense. The same is true today in the period of COVID-19, when chiropterans are once again in the etiological hot seat: bats are behind the pandemic, according to Ridley's shock phrase (2020). In Burkina Faso's Lobi country, between the red and black fruit-eaters (which have always been eaten) and the small insectivores (which have never been eaten as such, but are very useful to animist healers), there is a chasm of representation that is unveiled by these images.

Conservation projects subscribing to a community-based paradigm have predominated in the 21st century. We examined the context in which the phrase was coined and traced its growth over time. Community-based conservation first appeared in the literature in the early 1990s; but grew little until after the 5th World Parks Congress in 2003. Thereafter, publications describing community-based conservation approaches increased exponentially. The conference theme was Benefits Beyond Boundaries, and its goal was to provide an economic model based on revenue accrued from conservation fundraising and ecotourism to support ecosystems, wildlife, and people, particularly in the Global South. Such models tended not to incorporate, as a core principle, the heritage of local human communities. Human heritage varies substantially over time and space making generalization of conservation principles across scales challenging. Pitfalls that have grown out of the community-based conservation approaches in the Global South include fortress conservation, conservation militarism, consumptive and nonconsumptive ecotourism, and whiz-bang solutions. We propose 10 tenets in a human heritage-centered conservation framework (e.g., engage in conservation practices using local languages, thoughtfully propose and apply solutions consistent with human heritage, provide clear professional development pathways for individuals from local communities, and promote alternative revenue-generating programs centered in local communities, among others). Progressive philosophies can derive from authentic and ethical integration of local communities in conservation practice.Los proyectos de conservación que siguen un paradigma basado en la comunidad han predominado en el siglo XXI. Examinamos el contexto en el cual se acuñó la frase y rastreamos su crecimiento con el tiempo. The Internet has made pornography available on a massive scale. Data released by “Pornhub” the world’s most popular Internet porn site, reveal that in 2019 alone, there were over 42 billion visits to its website, which in itself is an incredible waste of time and energy, which could be more fruitfully employed. Pornography viewing is poisonous for the conscience and commodifies the human body, reducing it to an object of abusive pleasure. Its negative effects can be broadly seen in three overlapping categories: personal, psychological, and social. The antidote is a renewed call to chastity, that self-mastery that can help direct one’s passions in a more fruitful way. Without prayer, we cannot live chastely as “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). There is an urgency for the new evangelization to help recapture the dignity of the body and counter the lie of pornography, and to ensure that in the digital world, the face of Christ needs to be seen and his voice heard. Summary: The first part of this essay outlines some personal, psychological, and social dangers of pornography. Viewing of pornography is harmful, as it objectifies the human body and distorts one’s vision of sexuality. The second part of the essay gives some practical advice concerning how to ideally halt or reverse the epidemic of porn viewing, emphasizing the dignity of each person as subject, and reminding us of how a chaste gaze helps one rediscover the real beauty and value of the human body.

The following article contains a study of grotesque forms of poetry and writing used by Bunin for portraying the state of Russian life from 1916 to 1920s based on the contents of his two stories and three journalist works. I is shown that Bunin’s grotesque style is not related to comic aspects of his artistic mind (M. M. Bakhtin), but is rooted from the tragic worldview and in its contents are related to such categories as frightening, absurd, das Unheimliche (horrible, omnious), monstrous (W. Kayser, I. P. Smirnov). A plentora of grotesque forms of poetry and writing is unveiled. In “Old lady” and “Mad painter” stories, an atmosphere of grotesque is created with a whole system of contrasts, introduction of a grotesque subject and also an intermedial visual pattern, which originates from a teratological style of medieval visionary art, and principles of fine arts as a whole. In “old lady” the narrator plays a role of a grotesque object, he emphasizes the grotesque reality by grotesque narrative. In “Mad painter” this role is occupied by a character who is not only contrasted to the world but is also a creator of das Unheimliche, whish deforms this world. In the stories reality is shown indirectly – through different reflections / mirrors that transform unique to regular and play a role of a magnifying glass, which even further unveils the monstrosity and absurdity of the earlier mentioned facts. In “Notorious pig” the grotesque narrative is completed by many grotesque subjects, suppressed by the objective course of events, stripped off their personal identity and created the horrible “documents of age”. “Moonshine and champagne” highlights the topic of sweet soulfulness of intellectuals towards the people. In “Human finger soup” grotesque imagery, appearing from epistolary dialogue with Gorky becomes a means of symbolic synthesis. Cannibalism is explained as a base for new Russian regime. In journalist works, Bunin extensively utilizes the effect of alienation, dissolution of subjective identity in objectivity, a principle of a magnifying glass. Bunin’s grotesque, enriched with bright objectivity and visuality of linguistic imagery, becomes a powerful means of conceptualization of the writer’s thought and its aesthetical embodiment.

This paper advocates a holistic approach to assessing international relations in undergraduate education, which revolves around: (a) essays and (b) active learning-related tasks, such as simulation reflective statements/reports and performance. The paper argues that, on the one hand, academic essays are far from irrelevant and it is difficult to overestimate their practical significance. On the other hand, active learning-related tasks are best utilised as a supplementary assessment, expanding the students’ range of transferable skills. The assessment structure advocated in this paper results from a holistic approach to assessment design, which includes teacher’s own experience, familiarity with pedagogical scholarship and input from students. This last element is the least common even though it makes sense to understand how students see their own assessment. To that end, the paper shares the results of a pilot project run at one of the UK universities, which engaged students as partners in rethinking their assessment.

Western medicine developed as an expression of Christian charity and played a large role in the growth of the early church. Despite its original foundation in Christian moral principles, modern medicine has deviated from its origins. The principles of human dignity, solidarity, and subsidiarity have been subjugated to a materialist and transactional construct that forms the basis of the contemporary medical delivery and financing systems. The dehumanization of both healthcare practitioners and patients by the partnership of governmental and corporate entities, and the use of health care as a political instrument, has debased the original mission of the medical profession and represents an affront to the principles of Catholic social teaching (CST). This essay explores the ways in which the US medical delivery and financing systems violate the principles of CST by means seldom recognized due to the inurement of the public and medical professionals. By examining the prevailing healthcare model through the lens of CST, the author illustrates the ways in which CST principles are systematically violated. This analysis serves as the foundation of a Catholic response to the question of how faithful Christians might live out their calls to holiness through the exercise of their professional vocations. A vision of an invigorated model of medicine as vocation, along with illustrative examples, is presented. By exemplifying the principles of human dignity, solidarity and subsidiarity in health care, Christians can seize a golden opportunity for evangelization by rearticulating the historical spiritual mission of Western medicine.

It is difficult to exaggerate the breadth and depth of Mary-Kay Wilmers’ contribution to national and international culture. Since 1992, she has been the editor of the London Review of Books. Her book The Eitingons: A Twentieth-Century Story (2009) came out in London and New York, in Moscow, in Paris. In Human Relations and Other Difficulties (2018) her long essays (reviews) were collected – from Listener, New Yorker, the LRB. This article presents her works in a literary context, gives her stylistic portrait through analysis of dominant features of her language personality. The first part of the article is devoted to The Eitingons. The research of her remarkable family evolved into a beautifully written book where the narrator is the most intriguing character. Historical indefiniteness did not embarrass the author, moreover, her penetration and postmodern approach turned the enigmas of history into a fascinating account where ambivalence and paradoxes helped to portray the mystery of life. The first Russian translation let you feel the difficulties of transforming into a different language her highly delicate and sophisticated approach, her lightness, ambivalence, intimate intonation. In the second part, devoted to Human Relations, special attention is paid to her works on obituaries, advertising encyclopedia, language of the novel reviewing, ‘difficult women.’ Close reading demonstrates the author’s functional, balanced, considerate, courageous, challenging, critical, convivial approach. Right priorities, admirable style, wisdom, charm on page are characteristics of Mary-Kay Wilmers’ ‘modest unemphatic originality’. The third part touches upon the books devoted to her.

Chris Gregory’s Gifts and Commodities (1982) is widely regarded as a classic in economic anthropology as well as in studies on Melanesia. The work offers a lucid typology and de nition of the concepts of ‘gift’ and ‘commodity’based on the tradition of political economy and economic anthropology.It shows how in colonial Papua New Guinea (PNG) gift and commodity economies articulated with each other and—contrary to the assumption of neoclassical economists—expanded simultaneously. In recounting how labour and primary production were commodi ed in colonial PNG, Gregory analyses the development and demise of the plantation economy and utilizes the concept of the ‘labour frontier’ that moved to new areas and eventually closed leading to the crisis of the plantation sector. In this essay I will brie y discuss Gregory’s notion of the ‘labour frontier’, relate it to later theorizations of the concept of ‘frontier’ and discuss how Gregory’saccounts helped me to understand contemporary dynamics of oil palmdevelopment in contemporary PNG.

The article deals with the specificity of professional reflection of the future music teacher in the light of the development of the ideas by E. B. Abdullin. The accumulation of one’s own experience of entering the world of music, the art of teaching, its comprehension and analysis allow a thoughtful student to look at the process of musical education through the eyes of students, their parents, that is, to take the reflective position of a teacher-researcher. The search for ways and means of solving professionally significant tasks requires a music teacher to think reflectively, understand the actions of his students and colleagues, and penetrate their feelings and thoughts. The importance of reflection in solving problem situations, pedagogical tasks, in mastering critical thinking by a future music teacher is substantiated. The conceptual foundations for professional reflection development of a future teacher-musician have been worked out, the structure of reflective analysis and the conditions for the effectiveness of its development by students have been revealed. The techniques and methods of preparing future bachelors and masters of music education for professional reflection in the process of studying at a university, during school practice, in various types of independent, research work of students are considered. The authors have adapted special reflexive techniques (artistic-pedagogical tasks, search games, storytelling, reflective life story, musical reflection, reflective analysis, interviews, pedagogical essays, creative portfolio). The article analyzes the experience of Dutch specialists, the author’s methods of foreign researchers (ALACT – model, “Wall”, “Arrows”, “Visiting card”, a system of reflective questions, etc.). Adapted for use by students in music lessons in the course of pedagogical practice, they become effective means for introspection, self-assessment of the activities of future bachelors / masters of music education. Based on the material of autobiographies and interviews of great musicians-performers, actual problems of music education, ways of spiritually reflexive entry into the world of art and artistic creation are analyzed.

Some conservation prioritization methods are based on the assumption that conservation needs overwhelm current resources and not all species can be conserved; therefore, a conservation triage scheme (i.e., when the system is overwhelmed, species should be divided into three groups based on likelihood of survival, and efforts should be focused on those species in the group with the best survival prospects and reduced or denied to those in the group with no survival prospects and to those in the group not needing special efforts for their conservation) is necessary to guide resource allocation. We argue that this decision‐making strategy is not appropriate because resources are not as limited as often assumed, and it is not evident that there are species that cannot be conserved. Small population size alone, for example, does not doom a species to extinction; plants, reptiles, birds, and mammals offer examples. Although resources dedicated to conserving all threatened species are insufficient at present, the world's economic resources are vast, and greater resources could be dedicated toward species conservation. The political framework for species conservation has improved, with initiatives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other international agreements, funding mechanisms such as The Global Environment Facility, and the rise of many nongovernmental organizations with nimble, rapid‐response small grants programs. For a prioritization system to allow no extinctions, zero extinctions must be an explicit goal of the system. Extinction is not inevitable, and should not be acceptable. Yet Woolf’s reputation as a fiction writer first and foremost has distracted critical attention from her thorough interrogation of what it means to be an intellectual. This class, by contrast, begins with the presumption that Woolf had much to say about the intellectual life—how to pursue it, why to pursue it, and who may pursue it. We will explore how her writing was affected by her embittered sense of being peripheral to academia (from her disappointment at not receiving a university education and her ambivalence over “not knowing Greek” to her bemused sense of irony of being invited to speak at women’s colleges and her intimate acquaintance with the vicissitudes of the intellectual life practiced by male Bloomsberries). We will theorize how her relationships with universities and scholars informed her sense of professional ethics as a literary critic, essayist, novelist, and publisher. Assessing argumentative writing skills is not a straightforward task, as multiple elements need to be considered. In function of providing feedback to students and keeping track of their progress, evaluating argumentative texts in a suitable, valid and efficient way is important. In this state-of-the-art exploratory study, 130 argumentative texts written by eleventh graders were assessed by means of three different rating procedures (i.e., absolute holistic rating, comparative holistic rating, and absolute analytic rating). The main aim of this study is twofold. First, we aim to examine the correlations between the three rating procedures and to study the extent to which these procedures differ in assigning scores. In doing so, the more innovative approach of pairwise comparisons is compared to more established assessment methods of absolute holistic and analytic rating. Second, we aim to identify key characteristics that determine the quality of an argumentative text, independent of the rating procedure used. Furthermore, key elements of mid-range, weak and strong argumentative texts were studied in detail. The results reveal low to moderate agreement between the different procedures, indicating that all procedures are suitable to assess the quality of an argumentative text; each procedure, however, has its own qualities and applicability.

In the scientific investigation, on the example of the journalistic heritage of S. Rusova, in particular - publications that corresponded to the essay genre in their form, several main historically important factors were analyzed, which in one way or another influenced the author’s choice of a specific genre form for her works. It was found that such factors of influence could be the specific historical period of the author’s life and creative path, with certain socio-economic conditions that either facilitated or hindered his publishing activity, the presence and availability of various publishing platforms, with the financial support of which were printed and published materials, as well as the audience for which they are intended and their thematic direction.

Статья рассматривает ключевой образ историко-культурного ландшафта малого (за)уральского города Ирбита – ярмарку, а также его аксиологическую наполненность в меморативном ландшафте трех периодов: второй половины XIX века, 1930-х и 1990-х гг. Проблема неполноты и разнородности источников фиксируется в каждом периоде. В XIX в. позитивный образ ярмарки формируется в историко-экономических очерках Е. А. Вердеревского и А. Г. Хитрова, однако через поколение он сменяется карнавальным изображением ярмарочных сезонов в травелогах Н. Д. Телешова и разоблачительными интонациями беллетристики Д. Н. Мамина-Сибиряка. Образы «ярмарочных безобразий» остаются единственной памятью о ярмарке в публичном дискурсе 1930-х гг., где происходит эстетическое и этическое обесценивание всего комплекса культурного наследия ярмарки. В позднесоветское время предпринимаются попытки фиксации народной памяти о ярмарке, однако в доступных нам материалах очевидно влияние советской историографии и смена социального состава носителей памяти. Изменение отношения ко всем составляющим историко-культурного ландшафта как символическим ресурсам памяти места происходит позднее, уже в XXI в. W artykule przeanalizowano kluczowy składnik krajobrazu historyczno-kulturowego małego (dla) Uralu miasta Irbit – jarmark, a także jego zawartość aksjologiczną w krajobrazie pamięci trzech okresów: drugiej połowy XIX wieku, lat 30. XX wieku i lat 90. Problem niekompletności i niejednorodności źródeł jest ustalony w każdym okresie. W XIX wieku pozytywny wizerunek jarmarku ukształtowały się w esejach historyczno-gospodarczych E. A. Werderewskiego i A. G. Chitrowa, ale po pokoleniu został zastąpiony przez karnawałowy obraz pór roku w dziennikach podróży N. D. Teleszowa oraz przez objawiające się intonacje powieści D. N. Mamina-Sibiryaka. W dyskursie publicznym lat 30. XX w., w którym następuje estetyczna i etyczna dewaluacja całego kompleksu jarmarcznego dziedzictwa kulturowego, pozostają obrazy „targowego zgiełku”. W późnych czasach sowieckich próbowano utrwalić pamięć ludową o jarmarku, jednak w dostępnych nam materiałach wpływ historiografii sowieckiej i zmiana składu społecznego nośników pamięci są oczywiste. Zmiana postaw wobec wszystkich elementów krajobrazu historyczno-kulturowego jako symbolicznych zasobów pamięci o miejscu następuje później, już w XXI wieku. The article discusses the Irbit Fair as the core of the historical-cultural landscape of a small Ural town and its axiological meaning in the memorative landscape in the second half of the 19th century, in the 1930s and the 1990s. Unfortunately, for each of these periods, the analysis had to deal with the problem of insufficient sources, which were heterogeneous but scarce. Nineteenth-century literature, for example, historical and economic essays written by E. A. Verderevsky and A. G. Khitrov depict the Fair in positive terms. However, just one generation later, these representations were replaced by the carnivalesque imagery of N.D.Teleshov’s travelogues and by the harsh and accusatory depictions found in D.N.Mamin-Sibiryak’s books. The representations of bad behaviour at the Fair remain the only memory of these events in the public discourse of the 1930s. This period was characterized by the aesthetical and ethical devaluation of the whole cultural heritage that the Irbit Fair represented. In the late Soviet period, some attempts were made to record the folk memory related to the Fair but the materials from this period still bear the signs of influence of Soviet historiography and changes in the social makeup of the bearers of this memory. Only later, in the twenty-first century, the Fair came to be seen as a valuable element of the memory of the place.
