1. Long-term follow-up of a case of feline leishmaniosis treated with a combination of allopurinol and meglumine antimoniate

Abstract

A 9-year-old domestic cat, positive for antibodies to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), was brought to a veterinary clinic with alopecia, ulcerative skin lesions, and upper respiratory tract (URT) signs. This was after being treated for suspected allergic dermatitis, without clinical improvement, for 2 y. Biopsy of the skin and fine-needle aspirates of the spleen and of the lymph nodes were taken which detected the presence of Leishmania amastigotes. Leishmania infection was further confirmed by detection of a high titer of anti-Leishmania antibodies (≥ 3200) with an indirect fluorescent antibody technique (IFAT) serology. After the diagnosis of feline leishmaniosis (FeL) was made, allopurinol and meglumine antimoniate were started and led to quick and complete clinical improvement. After 7 mo, allopurinol administration was briefly interrupted but was resumed following relapse of the skin lesions. One month later, the cat was treated for suspected acute kidney injury, which prompted reduction of the total daily dose of allopurinol by 50%. The cat remained clinically well, with complete resolution of the cutaneous and URT signs, for nearly 24 mo after the diagnosis of FeL; at which point it was euthanized for worsening cardiac disease. To our knowledge, this represents a rare case of successful treatment of FeL with a suspected nephrotoxic effect associated with long-term use of allopurinol. Further studies are required to clarify the relationship, if any, between leishmaniosis and congestive heart failure in cats.

2. Joaqu��n Torres-Garc��a���s Urban Fabrics: Fashioning the Body in New York, 1920-1922

Abstract

In 1919, the Uruguayan artist Torres-Garc��a moved from Barcelona to New York. In the experimental works that he produced during his two-year stay in the city, the artist presented New York and the bodies inhabiting it as inextricable from one another and mutually defining, enmeshed within the same urban fabric. He did so especially through references to fashion, depicting the articles of clothing worn by New Yorkers as extensions of the city���s morphology. By drawing upon the social functions of actual fabrics, Torres-Garc��a connected bodily and architectural surfaces to negotiate his ambivalence towards the demands of New York���s capitalist society on its denizens. This article investigates the artist���s constant oscillation between adhering to and undermining the conformity and mechanization that he attributed to New Yorkers. I argue that, through his interventions into the realm of fashion, Torres-Garc��a negotiated the urban individual���s potential to either adhere to the rhythms and lifestyles imposed by the city or resist them by playing with socio-economic signs and multiple identities. En los trabajos experimentales que produjo durante su estancia de dos a��os en la ciudad, el artista present�� a Nueva York y a los cuerpos que lo habitaban, como inseparables uno del otro y definidos mutuamente, enredados en el mismo tejido urbano. Particularmente lo hizo a trav��s de las referencias a la moda, representado los art��culos de vestir de los neoyorquinos como extensiones de la morfolog��a de la ciudad. Bas��ndose en las funciones sociales de las telas, Torres Garc��a conect�� superficies corp��reas y arquitect��nicas para gestionar su ambivalencia hacia las demandas de la sociedad capitalista de Nueva York en sus habitantes. Este art��culo investiga la constante oscilaci��n del artista entre adherirse y desestabilizar el conformismo y mecanizaci��n que atribu��a a los neoyorquinos. Abstract

By studying the properties of $q$-series $\widehat Z$-invariants, we develop a dictionary between 3-manifolds and vertex algebras. In particular, we generalize previously known entries in this dictionary to Lie groups of higher rank, to 3-manifolds with toral boundaries, and to BPS partition functions with line operators. This provides a new physical realization of logarithmic vertex algebras in the framework of the 3d-3d correspondence and opens new avenues for their future study. For example, we illustrate how invoking a knot-quiver correspondence for $\widehat{Z}$-invariants leads to many infinite families of new fermionic formulae for VOA characters., 85 pages, 3 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

IntroductionFollowing the detection of fetal growth restriction, there is no consensus about the criteria that should trigger delivery in the late preterm period. The consequences of inappropriate early or late delivery are potentially important yet practice varies widely around the world, with abnormal findings from fetal heart rate monitoring invariably leading to delivery. Indices derived from fetal cerebral Doppler examination may guide such decisions although there are few studies in this area. We propose a randomised, controlled trial to establish the optimum method of timing delivery between 32 weeks and 36 weeks 6 days of gestation. We hypothesise that delivery on evidence of cerebral blood flow redistribution reduces a composite of perinatal poor outcome, death and short-term hypoxia-related morbidity, with no worsening of neurodevelopmental outcome at 2 years.Methods and analysisWomen with non-anomalous singleton pregnancies 32+0 to 36+6 weeks of gestation in whom the estimated fetal weight or abdominal circumference is Ethics and disseminationThe Study Coordination Centre has obtained approval from London-Riverside Research Ethics Committee (REC) and Health Regulatory Authority (HRA). Abstract

We introduce supergroup analogues of 3-manifold invariants $\hat{Z}$, also known as homological blocks, which were previously considered for ordinary compact semisimple Lie groups. We focus on superunitary groups, and work out the case of SU(2|1) in details. Physically these invariants are realized as the index of BPS states of a system of intersecting fivebranes wrapping a 3-manifold in M-theory. As in the original case, the homological blocks are q-series with integer coefficients. We provide an explicit algorithm to calculate these q-series for a class of plumbed 3-manifolds and study quantum modularity and resurgence properties for some particular 3-manifolds. Finally, we conjecture a formula relating the $\hat{Z}$ invariants and the quantum invariants constructed from a non-semisimple category of representation of the unrolled version of a quantum supergroup., Comment: 56 pages, 7 figures. v2: minor corrections in the text and formulas, references added

Abstract

Background Childhood obesity prevention is a public health priority in industrialized countries. The Reggio Emilia Local Health Authority has implemented a program involving primary and secondary prevention as well as the care of obese children. There are many health-promoting mobile apps, but few are targeted to children and very few are sponsored by public health agencies. Objective The goal of the research was to describe the process and tools adopted to cocreate a mobile app sponsored by the Reggio Emilia Local Health Authority to be installed in parents’ phones aimed at promoting child health and preventing obesity. Methods After stakeholder mapping, a consulting committee including relevant actors, stakeholders, and users was formed. Key persons for childhood obesity prevention were interviewed, focus groups with parents and pediatricians were conducted, and community reporting storytelling was collected. The results of these activities were presented to the consulting committee in order to define the functionalities and contents of the mobile app. Results Three key trends emerged from community reporting: being active, playing, and being outdoors; time for oneself, family, and friends; and the pressures of life and work and not having time to be active and socialize. In focus groups, interviews, and labs, mothers showed a positive attitude toward using an app to manage their children's weight, while pediatricians expressed concerns that the app could increase their workload. When these findings were explored by the consulting committee, four key themes were extracted: strong relationships with peers, family members, and the community; access to safe outdoor spaces; children’s need for age-appropriate independence; and professional support should be nonjudgmental and stigma-free. It should be a dialogue that promotes family autonomy. The app functions related to these needs include the following: (1) newsletter with anticipatory guidance, recipes, and vaccination and well-child visit reminders; (2) regional map indicating where physical activity can be done; (3) information on how to manage emergencies (eg, falls, burns, fever); (4) module for reinforcing the counseling intervention conducted by pediatricians for overweight children; and (5) a function to build a balanced daily diet. Conclusions The pilot study we conducted showed that cocreation in health promotion is feasible, with the consulting committee being the key co-governance and cocreation tool. The involvement of stakeholders in this committee made it possible to expand the number of persons and institutions actively contributing to the project.

Abstract

This work was aimed to test the suitability of an epoxidized cardanol derived plasticizer for the production of soft PVC characterized by low environmental and toxicological impact soft PVC. Nowadays, the use of natural derived plasticizer in soft PVC industry is emerging as valid alternative towards conventional phthalate plasticizers, in order to reduce the environmental and toxicological impact of soft PVC. In facts, cardanol is a natural and renewable resource, characterized by a wide worldwide availability. In addition, being derived from cashew nut shell liquid, which is a by-product of cashew nut shell industry, it does not contribute to the subtraction of resources from the food chain, in contrast, for example, to epoxidized soybean oil. To this purpose, soft PVC samples were produced in an industrial plant, using both cardanol derived and phthalate plasticizer. Thermal and mechanical characterization showed that the properties of PVC plasticized by cardanol derivative are comparable to those of soft PVC obtained by phthalate, which is a clear indication of the good plasticizing effectiveness of cardanol derivative, and highlights its potential for the production of soft PVC characterized by reduced environmental and toxicological impact.

Abstract

This work is aimed to study the suitability of cardanol derivatives as plasticizers for poly(vinyl chloride), (PVC). The plasticizers are obtained by chemical modification of cardanol, a natural, renewable resource, obtained as a by-product of the cashew nut shell industry. Due to the choice of environmentally friendly chemical modification routes, partial conversion of cardanol to the target compounds was obtained. Consequently, the tested plasticizers were composed of a mixture of different cardanol derivatives. Rheological tests on PVC plastisols obtained with neat cardanol showed that cardanol must be subjected to chemical modifications, such as acetylation and epoxidation, in order to perform as an effective plasticizer. In particular, only after epoxidation, does the cardanol derivative become fully soluble in PVC. PVC plastisols obtained with such cardanol derivatives present a similar gelation temperature compared to bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) based plastisols. Mechanical properties of the flexible PVC produced by the addition of cardanol derived plasticizer after epoxidation are also comparable to those attained by the use of DEHP. Nevertheless ageing tests showed an accelerated migration of cardanol derived plasticizer, attributed to the loss of unreacted cardanol present in the plasticizer, which was in turn responsible for a significantly faster degradation of the properties, compared to flexible PVC containing DEHP. This highlights the relevance of achieving a high yield of the acetylation and epoxidation reactions, which is a relevant issue of the future research and development activities in this field.

Abstract

Brescia’s downtown is outlined by link roads built up at the Venetian walls, known as “Ring. The “Ring” is characterized by high traffic flows, as well as by the presence of several paid parking lots located on and off street. Furthermore, several facilities are located on these link roads. Nowadays city of Brescia is equipped with an ITS system able to manage off street parking spaces, allowing the share of information about parking availability to potential users, through the use of variable message panels. The parking supply issue and its management are strongly felt by citizens, as well as many other cities communities, whether European or not. This contribution aims to encourage an integration of the existing ITS system for the off street parking management with additional devices, which allow to manage also the on street paid parking supply located on “Ring” roads. The minimization of so-called “shared traffic” component of traffic flows, as well as the increase of road safety, in the context of a medium-sized Italian city are the main objectives of the ITS system integration. ITS asset chosen for the Brescia case study springs from the analysis of some non-European experiences about on street parking management (for example, San Francisco and Boston) and certainly can be considered suitable for the parking supply management of the whole city.
