This poster delineates the establishment of the São João Health Data Repository at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João (CHUSJ), a Portuguese university public hospital, employing Dataverse software. From a management perspective, this being a service integrated in the healthcare context, it must conform to strict requirements when it comes to publication policies and data curation. Such processes aim to avoid the inadvertent disclosure of patients' sensitive information to unauthorized people. Our objective is to not only publish data publicly but also to securely provide traceable data to researchers who have approved projects at CHUSJ, ensuring that the risk of subjects’ re- identification remains below 1%. This dual approach facilitates open access to information while maintaining stringent privacy standards for data that may be sensitive. The goals of providing this service are: - To improve collaboration and knowledge sharing within the healthcare network. - To promote Open Science and the use of open infrastructure. - To ensure data is properly managed, documented, and preserved for long-term use. The service is based on a dockerized version of Dataverse with additional components and integrations such as a preview component and statistical dashboards supported by Apache Superset. The Health Data Repository allows healthcare providers to upload and share clinical research data securely with persistent identifiers. All datasets made available to the general public have been submitted to a risk analysis procedure that reduces the chances of patient re-identification, even when data has been anonymised. This risk analysis methodology, which is being developed in the context of CHUSJ, has already been approved by the national data protection authority (https://www.cnpd.pt/umbraco/surface/cnpdDecision/download/122003). The Health Data Repository is still in its infancy but it intends to showcase health data that will impact healthcare and also society as a whole. The first dataset to become available aims to provide a set of data in a shared data model with attribute-based access in order to respond more swiftly and efficiently to the continuing high number of access requests for clinical research purposes about COVID-19. This approach allows for a wiser allocation of human resources currently assigned to this function (information system teams and data protection officers), the mitigation of the impact on data subjects' rights and improvement of data quality for research purposes.

INTRODUÇÃO: A insuficiência cardíaca (IC) é uma síndrome em que há um distúrbio do desempenho do miocárdio e da ativação progressiva do sistema neuroendócrino que atende os órgãos do corpo humano. OBJETIVO: Estipular a taxa de mortalidade por insuficiência cardíaca nas macrorregiões do Brasil entre 2010 e 2020. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo ecológico descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa sobre a mortalidade por insuficiência cardíaca nas macrorregiões no Brasil entre 2010 e 2020. Para a avaliação epidemiológica utilizou-se as variáveis: categoria CID-10, ano e região. Os critérios de exclusão foram dados classificados como ignorados ou em branco porque eles poderiam subestimar os resultados finais. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSÃO: O panorama geral da mortalidade por insuficiência cardíaca no Brasil no período analisado revela uma tendência decrescente quando se compara o ano de 2010 com 2020. Ao observar o panorama geral nas macrorregiões brasileira é possível visualizar que as maiores taxas de mortalidade entre 2010 e 2016 ocorreram na região Sul que nos anos seguintes foi superada pela região Sudeste. Em contrapartida, a região Norte foi a com menor taxa de mortalidade seguida pelo Centro-Oeste entre 2011 e 2020. A região Nordeste ocupou uma posição intermediária em comparação as demais exceto no ano de 2010 em que houve menor taxa de mortalidade do que a região Centro-Oeste. CONCLUSÃO: A partir desses achados, observa-se a necessidade de políticas públicas voltadas especialmente para as regiões mais afetadas, visando especialmente medidas comportamentais para controle dos fatores de risco e capacitação profissional.

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles are of high interest for therapeutic applications. In this work, nanoparticles of calcium-doped manganese ferrites (CaxMn1􀀀xFe2O4) functionalized with citrate were synthesized through thermally assisted oxidative precipitation in aqueous media. The method provided well dispersed aqueous suspensions of nanoparticles through a one-pot synthesis, in which the temperature and Ca/Mn ratio were found to influence the particles microstructure and morphology. Consequently, changes were obtained in the optical and magnetic properties that were studied through UV-Vis absorption and SQUID, respectively. XRD and Raman spectroscopy studies were carried out to assess the microstructural changes associated with stoichiometry of the particles, and the stability in physiological pH was studied through DLS. The nanoparticles displayed high values of magnetization and heating efficiency for several alternating magnetic field conditions, compatible with biological applications. Hereby, the employed method provides a promising strategy for the development of particles with adequate properties for magnetic hyperthermia applications, such as drug delivery and cancer therapy.

In this new reality, video emerges as one of the essential tools for science dissemination. Among the different kinds of videos used for this purpose, video abstract gained prominence. As a link to scientific papers, it ensures quality and rigour, but despite its potential, little is known about how educators could integrate these innovative resources into their classes. For this purpose, a reception study was designed based on an original video abstract. Simultaneamente, com o advento das novas tecnologias e com o aparecimento da pandemia COVID-19 o modo como comunicamos ciência tornou-se mais complexo. Nesta nova realidade, o vídeo aparece como uma das ferramentas essenciais para disseminar o conteúdo científico. Entre os vários formatos, o video abstract tem ganho especial destaque. Como versão audiovisual do artigo, assegura a qualidade e o rigor, porém apesar do seu potencial, ainda se desconhece de que forma os professores o podem incorporar nas suas aulas. Para isso foi aplicado um estudo de receção a um vídeo abstract original. Este artigo discute os resultados de uma série de entrevistas subsequentes a professores de Biologia e Geologia e ex-alunos para perceber de que modo o vídeo abstract pode ser integrado numa estratégia de ensino aprendizagem. Five Euratom projects launched since 2017 in support of the development of ESNII/Generation-IV reactor systems are briefly presented in the paper in terms of key objectives, results, and recommendations for the future. These projects focus on various aspects of the following ESNII/Generation-IV systems: Sodium Fast Reactor, Gas Cooled Fast Reactor, Supercritical Water Cooled Reactor, and Molten Salt Fast Reactor. The paper does not consider EU projects focused on the Gen-IV reactor technologies based on the use of heavy metals as a coolant because these projects are reviewed in a different paper.

The paradigm of big data is characterized by the need to collect and process data sets of great volume, arriving at the systems with great velocity, in a variety of formats. Spark is a widely used big data processing system that can be integrated with Hadoop to provide powerful abstractions to developers, such as distributed storage through HDFS and resource management through YARN. When all the required configurations are made, Spark can also provide quality attributes, such as scalability, fault tolerance, and security. However, all of these benefits come at the cost of complexity, with high memory requirements, and additional latency in processing. An alternative approach is to use a lean software stack, like Unicage, that delegates most control back to the developer. In this work we evaluated the performance of big data processing with Spark versus Unicage, in a cluster environment hosted in the IBM Cloud. Two sets of experiments were performed: batch processing of unstructured data sets, and query processing of structured data sets. The input data sets were of significant size, ranging from 64 GB to 8192 GB in volume. The results show that the performance of Unicage scripts is superior to Spark for search workloads like grep and select, but that the abstractions of distributed storage and resource management from the Hadoop stack enable Spark to execute workloads with inter-record dependencies, such as sort and join, with correct outputs., 10 pages, 14 figures

In the era of intensive globalization, the growing number of options available and the increasing awareness of customers leads to a continuous increase in their quality service demands. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges companies faces today is to differentiate their services through quality improvement. The present study aims to identify the dimensions underlying the formation of service quality perceptions in the Portuguese health insurance sector and assess their relationships with satisfaction and loyalty. The primary data has been collected from a non-probabilistic sample of 128 Portuguese citizens over 18 years of age and subscribers to at least one health plan or insurance. Service quality was measured using the SERVPERF methodology (Cronin et al., 1992) and a 26-item scale, structured according to the SERVQUAL five dimensions (Parasuraman et al., 1985), was applied. Principal Component Analysis led to the identification of a four-dimensional hierarchal structure: “Reliability & Responsiveness”, “Assurance & Empathy”, “Tangibles” and “Convenience”. Based on the relevance of each of these factors, the health insurance providers can propose appropriate action plans based on the most crucial dimensions in shaping customer service quality perceptions. Correlational analysis indicated that the perceived quality of service, in all its dimensions, significantly relates to both satisfaction and loyalty, the latter also relating to each other. The mediation analysis showed that quality influences loyalty both directly and indirectly, through satisfaction, which means that to get a competitive advantage over the competitors, the service quality should be used as a strategic tool. It was found that age and gender differentiate satisfaction levels and that loyalty differs depending on product type and age. Num mercado global extremamente competitivo, constituído por clientes cada vez mais informados e exigentes, um dos maiores desafios que se coloca às empresas é o de diferenciar os seus serviços por meio da melhoria da qualidade. O presente estudo visa identificar as dimensões subjacentes à formação das perceções de qualidade de serviço no setor dos seguros de saúde português e avaliar as suas relações com a satisfação e fidelização dos clientes. Os dados primários foram recolhidos a partir de uma amostra não probabilística de 128 cidadãos portugueses com mais de 18 anos e subscritores de pelo menos um plano ou seguro de saúde. Para aferir a qualidade de serviço, foi utilizada a metodologia SERVPERF (Cronin et al., 1992) com recurso a uma escala de 26 itens baseada na estrutura de cinco dimensões da escala SERVQUAL (Parasuraman et al., 1985). A Análise de Componentes Principais levou à identificação de uma estrutura hierárquica de quatro dimensões: “Confiabilidade e Capacidade de resposta”, “Garantia e Empatia”, “Tangíveis” e “Conveniência”. A análise de correlações indicou que a qualidade percebida do serviço, em todas as suas dimensões, está significativamente relacionada tanto com a satisfação como com a fidelização, relacionando-se também estas entre si. Através da análise de mediação foi ainda possível constatar que a qualidade influencia a fidelização tanto de forma direta, como indiretamente via satisfação, o que significa que, para obter vantagem competitiva sobre os concorrentes, a qualidade do serviço deve ser utilizada como uma ferramenta estratégica. Verificou-se ainda que a idade e o género diferenciam os níveis de satisfação e que a fidelização difere consoante o tipo de produto e a idade.

The Stn1-Ten1 complex has a dual function at telomeres., Mammalian CST (CTC1-STN1-TEN1) complex fulfills numerous functions including rescue of the stalled replication forks and termination of telomerase action. In fission yeast lacking the CTC1 ortholog, the Stn1-Ten1 complex restricts telomerase action via its sumoylation-mediated interaction with Tpz1TPP1. We identify a small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO)–interacting motif (SIM) in the carboxyl-terminal part of Stn1 and show that this domain is crucial for SUMO and Tpz1-SUMO interactions. Point mutations in the SIM (Stn1-226) lead to telomere elongation, impair Stn1-Ten1 recruitment to telomeres, and enhance telomerase binding, revealing that Stn1 SIM domain contributes to the inhibition of telomerase activity at chromosome ends. Our results suggest that Stn1-Ten1 promotes DNA synthesis at telomeres to limit single-strand DNA accumulation. We further demonstrate that Stn1 functions in the replication of telomeric and subtelomeric regions in a Taz1-independent manner. Genetic analysis reveals that misregulation of origin firing and/or telomerase inhibition circumvents the replication defects of the stn1-226 mutant. Together, our results show that the Stn1-Ten1 complex has a dual function at telomeres by limiting telomerase action and promoting chromosome end replication.

Euroscitizen Media Working Group (WG4) aims to describe good practices to better link scientific communities with journalists and the media, and consequently present powerful, stimulating and effective messages that can help strengthen the public understanding of scientific literacy and evolution in particular. EuroScitizen COST Action is a research network which aims to identify targeted strategies to raise levels of scientific literacy in Europe using evolution as a model. One of the activities developed by the EuroScitizen Media Working Group (WG4) was a set of Training Schools in Science and Media directed to young scientists and journalists. By uniting scientists and journalists, we aimed to promote better communication between the two groups while giving advanced training in science communication. The training activities were originally planned as one in-person Training School but converted to online events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This required an adjustment of schedule and contents, and instead of having a training school for three full days, as in the planned in-person school, we developed several shorter sessions. Herein, we present the set of Science and Media training events we organised from June 2021 through February 2022, as well as the main challenges we encountered and what we found to be advantages of the online environment for training. We also share a checklist we developed for the organisation of training schools that may provide a useful tool for people planning other training events. The tracheobronchial tree is commonly seen to have a systematic branching symmetry, despite being known to have an asymmetrical design. Branching asymmetry allows for uniform airflow and provides robustness against the morphogenesis-related size variability. Here, a constructal approach is used to tracheobronchial tree analysis, and a general model based on entropy generation during breathing process is provided, which holds with asymmetric characteristics of the tree, and the change for inhaling and exhaling air. In contrast to traditional models available in the literature, the entropy generation of inspiration and expiration processes is compared for symmetry and asymmetric designs. This approach unravels the fundamental consequences of asymmetric constraint in the process of breathing and provides justification for the tracheobronchial tree having the same number of bifurcation levels as optimized symmetrical trees.

A problemática principal desta dissertação consiste em saber como podemos discutir sobre a produção dos redatores Affonso Vargas e Esteves Lisboa no periódico A Arte Musical na primeira década do século XX. Estruturalmente, os assuntos são os analisados nas fontes primárias: situação cultural, social, filosófica e política, feminismo e progresso cultural no nosso país; as atividades do Teatro de São Carlos e perspetivas sobre ópera, compositores e a arte do canto lírico. Através da análise dos temas e conteúdos dos seus artigos, conclui-se que, tal como sucede com outros agentes musicais republicanos, os escritores estudados incluem na sua agenda preocupações ao nível da educação artística de profissionais e público em geral. The main problem of this dissertation is to know how we can discuss the production of the writers Affonso Vargas and Esteves Lisboa in the periodical A Arte Musical in the first decade of the 20th century. Structurally, the subjects are analyzed in the primary sources: cultural, social, philosophical, and political situation, feminism and cultural progress in our country; the activities of Teatro de São Carlos and perspectives on opera, composers and the art of lyrical singing. Through the analysis of the themes and contents of their articles, it is concluded that, as with other republican musical agents, the studied writers include in their agenda concerns in terms of artistic education for professionals and the general public.

Football is the most popular sport in Europe where players assume a key role. In recent years, we have assisted to an inflation of the players price which may represent a profligacy problem to the European football teams. Consequently, is important to understand which factors influence the transfer market value of football players. Recent studies suggest that the transfer market value depends on many factors, including the performance measures. These measures quantify the abilities that each player executes in the pitch. Despite the developments made on this field, few studies considered the specifications of each position in the performance measures selection. Therefore, this study aims to understand the impact of the performance measures in the players of top six European leagues in the last three seasons, considering each position group. For this, fixed effect regression was run and the results revealed that goalkeepers market value has a positive correlation with the number of games without conceiving goals. The defensive duels and the aerials duels won per minute have a negative correlation for the defenders. The number of assists affects positively the transfer market value of midfielders and goals have a great impact in these players and attackers’ value. This research intent to produce relevant insights to agents that have an active role in football transfer market.

La diversidad funcional es una experiencia, es la condición vital de una persona y, como tal, le afecta a ella y a su entorno y relaciones. Esta experiencia puede ser vivida y analizada de manera simultánea, rechazando la dicotomía sujeto/ objeto que presupone una distancia neutralizante entre el investigador y su objeto de estudio. Aquí se ofrece, desde esa condición dual, la de investigadora y madre, una narrativa autoetnográfica de la diversidad funcional, la diversidad funcional de Carmen, la niña de ojos grandes y hermosos. Functional diversity is an experience, is the living condition of a person and, as that, effects herr and her environment and relations. This experience can be simultaneously lived and analysed, rejecting the subject/object dichotomy that states a neutralizing distance between researcher and her study object. Es importante considerar la transición hacia un modelo de organización neoliberal del mercado de trabajo en España porque supone uno de los obstáculos fundamentales para la efectiva inclusión social de las personas con diversidad funcional, y hace evidente uno de los factores principales que impiden que su movilización política para el pleno reconocimiento de sus derechos pueda alcanzar su objetivo: el modelo de organización neoliberal de las relaciones laborales ha constituido un campo social que impone, valora y da reconocimiento a un habitus radicalmente individualista, como disposición laboral, que fomenta una subjetividad reactiva a todo proyecto colectivo y a toda causa solidaria.

We show that production networks are important for the transmission of unconventional monetary policy. Firms with bonds eligible for purchase under the European Central Bank���s Corporate Sector Purchase Program act as financial intermediaries by extending more trade credit to their customers. The increase in trade credit is more pronounced from core countries to periphery countries and for financially constrained customers. Customers increase investment and employment in response to the increase in trade financing, while suppliers expand their customer base, contributing to upstream industry concentration. Our findings suggest that trade credit redistributes the effects of monetary policy across regions and firms.

The increase in the production and collection of data from devices is an ongoing trend due to the roll-out of more cyber-physical applications. Smart meters, because of their importance in power grids, are a class of such devices whose produced data requires meticulous processing. In this paper, we use Unicage, a data processing system based on classic Unix shell scripting, that delivers excellent performance in a simple package. We use this methodology to process smart meter data in XML format, subjected to the constraints posed by a real use case. We develop a solution that parses, validates and performs a simple aggregation of 27 million XML files in less than 10 minutes. We show that FinTech lending affects credit markets and real economic activity using a unique data set of a Peer-to-Business platform for which we have the universe of loan applications. We find that FinTech serves high quality and creditworthy small businesses who already have access to bank credit. Firms use FinTech to obtain long-term unsecured loans and reduce their exposure to banks with less liquid assets, stable funds, and capital. We find that access to FinTech spurs firm growth, employment and investment relative to firms that get their loan application rejected. In addition, firms with access to FinTech increase leverage and substitute long-term bank debt with FinTech debt. Our findings suggest that FinTech allows firms to preserve financial exibility, reduce their bank dependence and exposure to banking shocks.

A pandemia Covid-19 veio mudar a forma e a proximidade com que comunicamos. Uma parte significativa da nossa comunicação, que anteriormente seria presencial, passou a ser digital, nomeadamente recorrendo a videochamadas Contudo as videochamadas em muitas áreas de negócio é necessário exemplificar uma ação, ilustrar instruções ou até ter alguma forma mostrar ou demonstrar um produto que possa não estar fisicamente presente junto a um, ou a ambos os participantes numa conversação. Neste projeto decidi escolher como caso de estudo o exercício físico, que permite o acompanhamento do treino por um profissional sem que tenham de estar num ginásio. Para isso, implementei algumas funcionalidades que possam completar uma videochamada no sentido de tornar o canal de comunicação mais rico. Para escolher que funcionalidades implementar realizei uma pesquisa sobre aplicações de exercício físico disponíveis nas lojas de aplicações e também foi realizado um questionário com profissionais da área para entender se essas funcionalidades fazem sentido. Depois do levantamento de requisitos preparei o servidor e todos os seus componentes: para gestão das videochamadas, para comunicação síncrona e para o armazenamento e a disponibilização de ficheiros multimédia. A interação dos utilizadores é feita através de uma aplicação cliente que disponibiliza as funcionalidades previamente escolhidas. Neste projeto a aplicação cliente usa a plataforma Android e com a utilização de tecnologias como WebRTC e WebSockets foi possível implementar uma aplicação que consiga adicionar funcionalidades novas que conseguem ajudar numa videochamada, os treinadores pessoais. Com base nos resultados e feedback obtidos dos testes com utilizadores posso afirmar que as funcionalidades identificadas e desenvolvidas nesta aplicação são um importante complemento para os treinadores pessoais realizarem treinos através de uma videochamada, sendo que todos os treinadores que realizaram os testes da aplicação referiram que seria uma grande ferramenta de auxílio aos treinos online.

Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia Biológica, Atualmente, os consumidores procuram produtos com menos utilização de aditivos alimentares, como conservantes, fazendo com que as empresas procurem alternativas para a conservação dos seus produtos sem a utilização de aditivos. Uma das técnicas utilizadas são as embalagens com atmosfera modificada, que têm como função proteger o produto ao longo da sua validade. A Bel Fromageries destaca-se pela produção de queijo, contudo, tem recebido reclamações nos seus queijos em fatias, que surgem com bolor, devido a microperfurações nas embalagens individuais (embalagens com atmosfera modificada), não visíveis a olho nu. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a identificação das causas do aparecimento das microperfurações, bem como as suas possibilidades de mitigação. Deste modo, realizou-se um estudo a fim de descobrir a sua causa, que foi dividido em função de três variáveis: embalagem individual, tipo e material da caixa e eletricidade estática. Relativamente ao estudo em função da embalagem individual, realizaram-se dois ensaios, um em que se alterou a quantidade de gases dentro da embalagem individual, com mais ou menos volume de gases, e noutro onde se utilizou um filme Mono PE 80 µm, mais grosso que o standard (PET/PE 62 µm). Apenas no ensaio da utilização do filme Mono PE 80 µm se obtiveram resultados promissores. Quanto ao estudo em função do tipo e material da caixa, foram realizados vários ensaios, como a utilização de caixas de uma fileira, contrariamente ao standard (duas fileiras), a aplicação de uma orientação das embalagens individuais de modo diferente ao usual e, a utilização de diferentes tipos de caixa (com material standard, com revestimento interior e papel reciclado no interior), juntamente com placas separadoras também de diferentes materiais (kraft e papel reciclado). A utilização de placas separadoras kraft e de papel reciclado (exceto em caixas kraft) e a utilização de caixas com revestimento interior e caixas de uma fileira apresentaram resultados positivos. Por fim, foram realizadas medições de eletricidade estática, ao longo da linha de embalamento, onde se verificou que em certos momentos esta foi considerável. Assim, estudou-se a possibilidade de uma das causas ser a eletricidade estática nas embalagens individuais tendo sido realizado um ensaio com um ionizador de barras do tipo AC onde se verificou que não estava a surtir efeito. Com a realização deste trabalho foi possível identificar medidas de mitigação para a ocorrência de microperfurações nas embalagens individuais, contudo para identificação da causa é necessário a realização de mais ensaios com estudo de outras variáveis., Nowadays, consumers seek for products with fewer use of food additives such as preservatives, leading companies to search for alternatives to preserve their products without the use of additives. One of these techniques is the use of modified atmosphere packaging which has the function of protecting the product throughout its shelf life. Bel Fromageries stands out for its cheese production, however it has been receiving complaints about its sliced cheeses that appear with molds due to micro perforations on the individual packages (modified atmosphere packages), not visible to the naked eye. This work aims to identify the causes as well as mitigation possibilities of micro perforations on the individual packages. Hence, a study was carried out to identify the cause, which was divided according to three variables: individual packages, boxes type and materials, and static electricity. Regarding the study in terms of the individual packages two trials were performed one where the volume of gases inside the individual package was changed, with a more amount of gases volume or a smaller amount of gases volume inside the individual package, and the other one where a Mono PE 80 µm film, thicker than the standard one (PET/PE 62 µm), was used. Only the trial with the use of Mono PE 80 µm film had promising results. As for the box type and material study, several trials were realized, such as the use of one-row boxes as opposed to the standard (two rows), the application of a different orientation of the individual packages inside the box, and the use of different types of boxes (with a standard material, with an interior coating and another one with recycled paper in the inside) combined with different separating cardboards materials (kraft and recycled paper). The use of kraft separating cardboards and recycled paper (excluding in kraft boxes) and the use of coating boxes and single-row boxes had positive results. Lastly, static electricity measurements were carried out along the production line where it was found that at certain parts the static electricity was considerable, so the possibility that one of the causes was static electricity in individual packages was studied, therefore one trial with an AC type bars ionizer was carried out where it showed no effect on the appearance of micro perforations. With this work, it was possible to identify mitigation possibilities for the occurrence of micro perforations in individual packages, although, to identify the cause, it is necessary to carry out more trials by studying other variables.

Malfunctions of circadian clock trigger abnormal cellular processes and influence tumorigenesis. Using an in vitro and in vivo xenograft model, we show that circadian clock disruption via the downregulation of the core-clock genes BMAL1, PER2, and NR1D1 impacts the circadian phenotype of MYC, WEE1, and TP53, and affects proliferation, apoptosis, and cell migration. In particular, both our in vitro and in vivo results suggest an impairment of cell motility and a reduction in micrometastasis formation upon knockdown of NR1D1, accompanied by altered expression levels of SNAI1 and CD44. Interestingly we show that differential proliferation and reduced tumour growth in vivo may be due to the additional influence of the host-clock and/or to the 3D tumour architecture. Our results raise new questions concerning host&ndash, tumour interaction and show that core-clock genes are involved in key cancer properties, including the regulation of cell migration and invasion by NR1D1 in zebrafish xenografts.

International audience; Background: Cancer incidence increases with age. Due to the end-replicative problem, telomeres shorten with each cell division throughout our lives. Telomere shortening has consequences beyond the cellular level. As we age, cells approach replicative senescence and DNA damage emanating by short telomeres initiate a cascade of events that expands to the extracellular environment. Senescent cells were shown to release a set of molecules including inflammatory cytokines, termed senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Indeed, an inflammatory environment generates a pro-tumorigenic environment that supports tumor invasiveness. Aim of the study: Investigate the causal relation between short telomeres and cancer incidence. Determine whether this effect has a non-cell autonomous component by using zebrafish embryo chimeras and tumor transplants.

The football industry is worth billions and, even though most attention goes to players, football managers are a pivotal agent in turning sports results into financial success, since a team that presents poor performances is less likely to attract fan engagement and the financial benefits that come with it. Portugal is some how surprisingly an exporter of high quality football managers that have been excelling on the global stage, and, as such, it was pertinent to understand the root of their success. This exploratory study examines the perceptions of fans (12 interviews) and Portuguese football managers (10 interviews) themselves in a preliminary attempt to narrow down the key differentiators in these professionals. Results suggest that the main factors that distinguish Portuguese football managers are:(i) their adaptability, (ii) their way of relating and interacting with others and (iii) the Portuguese football culture.

Uma vez por mês, dois ou três alunos de doutoramento, de áreas diferentes, encontram-se num bar para falar da sua investigação, dos seus trabalhos, das suas descobertas e frustrações. Neste ambiente descontraído, projetos de várias áreas são apresentados em apenas 10 minutos cada, e constituem temas de conversa e discussão envolvendo a assistência com perguntas e respostas. Este modelo, adaptado de uma iniciativa inglesa (Nottingham), lançado em Portugal em 2015 e em funcionamento em 8 cidades portuguesas, de Norte a Sul do País, tem tido uma enorme aceitação do público e dos oradores. A pandemia global da doença COVID-19 obrigou ao encerramento ou condicionamento significativo dos bares. No entanto, os projetos de doutoramento não pararam e a sua Ciência continuou a precisar de ser comunicada. Houve, por isso, uma necessidade de reorganização. Neste sentido, os vários projetos PubhD que estão atualmente em funcionamento em Portugal, de Bragança a Lisboa, do Porto a Coimbra, passando pelo Minho, adaptaramse de diferentes formas à nova realidade. Com este debate pretendemos discutir os principais desafios com que a comunicação de Ciência em espaço público, e o formato PubhD em particular, se depara. Serão abordados outros desafios com que cada organização se deparou, e ainda se depara, assim como as oportunidades criadas e futuras. Será também discutido o fortalecimento da rede PubhD Portugal e as lições que daqui se podem tirar para semelhantes redes informais de comunicação de Ciência. Para isso, estarão “na mesa” representantes de organizações PubhD no ativo em Portugal, num debate de ideias que poderá trazer a todos os participantes e interessados novas possibilidades de colaboração, boas práticas e soluções para o futuro desta e de outras iniciativas de comunicação de ciência.

O litoral do estado do Rio de Janeiro é considerado de extrema importância para a conservação das tartarugas marinhas, todas classificadas como ameaçadas ou criticamente ameaçadas de extinção. O programa Tartaruga Viva da Eletronuclear, executado pela Faculdade de Oceanografia da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, realiza o Monitoramento de Tartarugas Marinhas na Área de Influência da Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto – CNAAA e busca elucidar eventuais alterações comportamentais ou de distribuição das populações na área de influência. Uma das abordagens do monitoramento é a amostragem populacional através de capturas e recapturas de animais, com utilização de anilhamento para registro e acompanhamento. No período de set/18 a jan/21 foram amostrados 92 quelônios sendo 58 em primeira captura e 34 em recapturas, a maioria (>50%) com ótimo “score” corporal. Todos os animais recapturados estavam nas mesmas áreas onde foram amostrados pela primeira vez, se alimentando ou descansando a menos de 50 m do ponto da primeira captura, indicando a tendência destes em permanecer em áreas favoráveis a alimentação e descanso.

Increased visceral adiposity may influence the development of prostate cancer (PCa) aggressive tumors and cancer mortality. White adipose tissue (WAT), usually referred to as periprostatic adipose tissue (PPAT), surrounds the prostatic gland and has emerged as a potential mediator of the tumor microenvironment. Exercise training (ET) induces several adaptations in both skeletal muscle and WAT. Some of these effects are mediated by ET-induced synthesis and secretion of several proteins, known as myo- and adipokines. Together, myokines and adipokines may act in an endocrine-like manner to favor communication between skeletal muscle and WAT, as they may work together to improve whole-body metabolic health. This crosstalk may constitute a potential mechanism by which ET exerts its beneficial role in the prevention and treatment of PCa-related disorders; however, this has not yet been explored. Therefore, we reviewed the current evidence on the effects of skeletal muscle?WAT?tumor crosstalk in PCa, and the potential mediators of this process to provide a better understanding of underlying ET-related mechanisms in cancer. We study how alternative sources of financing, Peer to Business (P2B) platforms, affect the financial policy of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We find that firms obtaining P2B loans are higher quality firms as they are large, more profitable, with higher sales growth, higher bank debt, and lower default rates. We conclude that P2B platforms are serving the same type of firms than traditional banks. While P2B loans do not seem to affect investment policy and performance, it does affect financial policy. Firms use the availability of P2B to reduce long-term bank debt, while they increase short-term bank debt following P2B lending. In addition, SMEs increase the number of lending relationships and reduce their dependence on a single bank, in particular those with less stable funding and lower liquidity. Our findings suggest that FinTech lending complements the debt financing choices of SMEs and allows them to diversify away from traditional banks. publishersversion published

Researchers, communicators, and other players are using audio-visual media to reinvent their stories, to deconstruct complex phenomena and to increase the outreach and impact of their scientific publications. An example of this trend is the video abstract: an audio-visual representation of the key findings described in the written abstract. Much of the research in this area is new and focused on content analysis and classification of online science videos. Furthermore, studies with videos and environmental communication are attached to specific topics like climate change. So far, a small fraction of publications has explored the study of the video abstract, its effects, and its potential, as one general scientific area. This paper provides the first characterization of video abstracts in the areas of Ecology and Environmental Sciences. We identified video abstracts in 29 scientific journals, based on impact, representativeness and visibility criteria. A database of 171 videos, from 7 publishers and 17 different video channels was created. Each video was analysed for different parameters. The analysis considered not only characteristics of each video, but also characteristics from the corresponding scientific papers. Results indicate that between 2010 and 2018 the number of video abstracts increased sevenfold. Despite this growth, there was no solid strategy for disseminating the videos. While most of them are still associated with classic models, such as documentaries, disruptive formats such as animation are the ones that arouse greater interest. Professional shorter videos (2-3 minutes in length) showed a significantly higher number of daily views and their papers garnered a higher number of citations per day. This data, combined with future qualitative research, will help to develop a model for validating the quality of an Ecology video abstract and provide new insights into the global study of audio-visual communication of science. publishersversion published

The study hereby presented displays the possibility of having a Sports Management program at Nova School of Business and Economics. In order to reach conclusions regarding the topic, two data collections were conducted: a series of interviews with industry professionals (November to December 2020) in order to obtain the industry’s perspective regarding a possible program (qualitative analysis); a questionnaire was spread throughout different student hubs, to obtain the perspective of possible interested in the program, and what they would value in it (quantitative analysis). The qualitative analysis pointed out a need to develop soft skills and a knowledge of the industry, all while showing availability to work with Nova SBE on this project, mainly through strategic partnerships. The quantitative analysis focused mainly on the program’s structure (modules, courses, thesis format), suggested fee and interest in the industry.

La discapacidad dista mucho de ser un fenómeno natural: su substrato fisiológico no es condición suficiente para su plena comprensión, dado que a lo largo de la Historia, y en diferentes culturas, dicha condición fisiológica ha propiciado situaciones y experiencias muy diversas a sus portadores. La discapacidad comporta una dimensión social y una procesualidad en su conformación que pueden ser analizadas desde una óptica sociológica. A la hora de abordar este análisis, nos circunscribiremos en el mundo occidental y en el período de tiempo más reciente, centrándonos en la transformación que, respecto a la concepción y a las prácticas a ella vinculadas, se da en el último tercio del s. XX. Se trata de un análisis ontogenético (la constitución de la “cosa” discapacidad) y genealógico (su evolución a lo largo del tiempo a partir de un supuesto origen previo).
